Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum, Bangalore Overview

Located on the Kasthurba Road in Bangalore, Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum was built in the honour of Bharat Ratna recipient Sir M Visvesvaraya. Spread over an area of 43000 sq. ft., the area is built in the sylvan surroundings of Cubbon Park and was inaugurated by the first Prime Minister of India- Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, in 1962. The first ever gallery exhibition displayed by the museum was based on the principles of “Electricity” and was open to public visit on the 27th of July, 1965. Designed on the theme of a “Science Museum”, the museum houses four floors dedicated to a scientific discipline each, with the topmost floor converted into a food court.

The outstanding deco of the depository has been inspired by the ancient scientific tools and machinery like Wright Brothers' Kitty Hawk, flying Stimulator and other similar objects. The backdrop shows surreal pictures and animations of changing the climate, various sea and land dynamics and different planetary positions. The centre has seven permanent gallery displays consisting of copious exhibits of a steam engine, aeroplanes, motor power etc. In addition to this, the museum has a virtual gaming zone, a tiny planetarium and a 3D visual display centre for recreation. The centre aims to promote the importance of science in everyday life by its interactive demonstrations and by conducting experiments.

Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum Bangalore

Photo of Shayaan Ahmad Noori

The Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum (VITM) is a museum in Bangalore , India . Again a place with less crowd attractions.

The museum is more of a "Science Centre". Each floor of this museum is dedicated to a scientific discipline. There are four floor in the museum with a top floor dedicated to canteen.

Engine Hall

The 'Engine Hall' exhibits engines of various automobiles, machines used in industry, a jet aircraft engine, and other mechanical devices. The predictability and precision of mechanics is demonstrated by the rolling balls that travel endlessly within metal tracks. It is delighting to watch the balls moving over roller coaster, looping a loop and bouncing high to be caught by a basket. Principle of conservation of energy can be explained convincingly through this exhibit.

Electro Technic Gallery

The 'Electro Technic Gallery' contains interactive electrical exhibits which work on the basic principles of electricity, electronics and communication.

Fun Science Gallery

Fun Science gallery displays exhibits on sciences of sound, optics, fluids, math and perception. This is a real fun-filled exhibition and people throng each and every exhibit in large numbers to operate them.

Space Gallery

The 'Dinosaur alive' has a moving replica of a Spinosaurus. The 'BEL Hall of Electronics' has interesting exhibits on Electronics.

Science for Children Gallery

This exhibition engages children in activities that help them to enjoy science. There is a giant piano over which they can dance to play music. A pin-wall helps the children to make the impression of their body parts on it.

There is a virtual game area, where children can play music using virtual instruments. An attractive mural made of colored beads welcome the visitors to this gallery, which is filled with fun and enjoyment. The museum also conducts a mini-planetarium show called 'Taramandal' at regular intervals. This is the only museum in the world other than the Smithsonian Institutions in the US, to have a full scale replica of the 1903 flyer of Wright brothers.

A new 3D theater using technology from LightSpeed, USA is open to the public now. Interesting films on deep sea diving and brain are screened here. The 3d effects are spectacular.

A must to visit place for all science lovers. If you have additional info, please inform me, would love to add it.

Madman's Journey

Complete Visvesvaraya Museum Bangalore Review – A splendid 1 Day Visit!

visvesvaraya museum

Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum – I visited it over a year ago when visiting Cubbon park . We visited the Visvesvaraya museum early after breakfast.

I didn’t know we’d be visiting this museum, but I’m glad we did! I put it on my Bangalore must-visit places . I’m someone who enjoys understanding the working of things around us. And this place, being a science and technology museum, was no doubt worth visiting.

The exhibits kept getting more interesting as we walked through. My friends had to drag me to the next one sometimes! Say had I been visiting alone, I’d have spent my whole day there.

So let’s get started and read on to know about some things to know when visiting the famous Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum in Bangalore.

Table of Contents

Things to know before visiting about Visvesvaraya Museum

Here are some informative (and boring) things to know about when visiting the place.

  • Visvesvaraya Museum entry fee – It’s 0-75 rupees. For the general visitors, it’s 75 rupees and the prices are lesser and vary for school groups, people holding BPL cards, and more. Check out all the pricing details here on the official site .
  • The Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum timings – It’s open from 9:30 am to 6 pm all days of the year. But it remains closed on a few occasions like Deepavali. Here is a list of holidays from the official museum’s website.
  • Visit the museum in the mornings – The best time to visit the Visvesvaraya museum is in the mornings. Not only will there be more peace, but there also won’t be much chaos when you check out the displays.

vishweshwaraiah museum virtual tour

While 75 rupees is the entry fee for most of us, you’ll see there’s also pricing given for other exhibitions in the museum like the 3D show, Science on a Sphere, and the Wright Brother’s flying simulator.

And the most important one – the Visvesvaraya Museum location : It’s located on Kasturba Road, Ambedkar Veedhi – 560001.

Since we visited Cubbon park earlier in the morning, we just had to walk around to get to the museum after our breakfast.

In case you’re looking for accommodations near this museum, or around Cubbon Park – check out these familiar places below for great deals on Booking.com!

Best Time to Visit Visvesvaraya Museum

As I said, it’ll take a day when you’re checking out each exhibit thoroughly. To the science enthusiasts, make sure to make more time for this place when visiting.

Keep a good 4 to 5 hours when you’re looking to examine the exhibits in detail. However, to most people visiting the museum just to pass time, around 2 to 3 hours is sufficient.

I’d stay longer and check out everything on the displays, but we were running out of time. So we had to leave early in the afternoon.

Exhibits at the museum

Most of the exhibits here are ones you’d find in many science museums in Karnataka, including the 3D shows. Still, there are more varieties to check out here:

The aircraft models hanging, the way some engines work, and even a large dinosaur model! (Well, the last one’s fun for kids)

vishweshwaraiah museum virtual tour

I was more into the exhibits of working of gears, belt movements, engine working, and all the mechanical stuff. The movements kept me engrossed!

The museum consists of many rooms for different sorts of works. And to make it easier for the general audience, all the rooms are connected unidirectionally. You walk in one door into a room with several exhibits and then exit from another to a room with a different theme altogether.

You shall be walking a lot in the museum . Since most of the exhibits are well-maintained and fun to check out, it’s worth the energy. It’s fun when you know what the exhibits are about of course.

And then there are also some outdoor exhibits too. We didn’t have time to visit it – but should it be the one with Archimedes’ Screw, don’t leave it out! Kids enjoy those.

Conclusion – Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum

That ends this post on my visit to Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum . Here’s a thing to remember before visiting:

  • Don’t leave out the quiet exhibits: There will always be some exhibits that no one cares about – usually something that looks uninteresting and stationary. Check them out yourself first!

All the exhibits have explanations given. Everything has its own story to tell in a museum – and that’s what makes it beautiful. You’ll have to hear them for yourself ;)
