Returning to his childhood home, a man finds himself standing beside the pond of the old Sussex farmhouse where he used to play. He’s transported to his 12th birthday when his friend Lettie claimed it wasn’t a pond, but an ocean… Plunged into a magical world, their survival depends on their ability to reckon with ancient forces that threaten to destroy everything around them.

Fresh from a sold-out run at the National Theatre, the adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Book of the Year winner The Ocean at the End of the Lane is now at the Duke of York's Theatre. The Ocean at the End of the Lane tickets are available on London Theatre now.

Following the National Theatre debut, described as "spellbinding" by critics, The Ocean at the End of the Lane received three Olivier Award nominations: Best New Play, Best Lighting Design, and Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

Neil Gaiman has won the Huge, Nebula, and Bram Stoker book awards for his novels, and when The Ocean at the End of the Lane was released, it won was voted Book of the Year at the British National Book Awards.

The Ocean at the End of the Lane play is adapted by Joel Horwood. Horwood’s previous work in London includes All The Little Things We Crushed at the Almeida Theatre and Berberian Sound Studio at the Donmar Warehouse, as well as screenwriting credits for Channel 4’s cult series Skins .

The Ocean at the End of the Lane also features set design by Fly Davis, costume and puppet design by Samuel Wyer, lighting by Paule Constable, sound designs by Ian Dickinson, puppetry direction by Finn Caldwell, movement by Steven Hoggett, and compositions by Jherek Bischoff.

National Theatre’s critically acclaimed ‘The Ocean at the End of the Lane’ to return to London’s West End

Following a highly acclaimed tour across the UK and Ireland, the National Theatre’s smash-hit production of  The Ocean at the End of the Lane  will return to London’s West End for a strictly limited 7-week run this autumn.  Based on a best-selling novel by Neil Gaiman, adapted by Joel Horwood and directed by Katy Rudd, this thrilling adventure of fantasy, myth and friendship, will play at the Noël Coward Theatre from 11 October until 25 November 2023. Tickets go on sale on 7 June available via  oceanonstage.com.

This first major stage adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s work blends magic with memory in a tour-de-force of storytelling that takes audiences on an epic journey to a childhood once forgotten and the darkness that lurks at the very edge of it.  Currently on tour, visiting 29 towns and cities across the UK and Ireland, the full cast will transfer with the show into London’s West End.

This year marks 10 years since Neil Gaiman’s best-selling novel,  The Ocean at the End of the Lane,  was first published. The novel won Book of the Year at 2013 National Book Awards and has sold over 1.5 million copies worldwide.

The Ocean at the End of the Lane  production received its world premiere at the National Theatre in 2019.  It made its West End debut at the Duke of York’s Theatre in 2021.

Writer Neil Gaiman said,  “10 years since my novel was first published  The Ocean at the End of the Lane  won lots of awards and people loved it, then the National Theatre turned it into the most amazing play. I am thrilled, overjoyed and absolutely delighted that this glorious adaptation of my book is going to be returning to the West End on St Martin’s Lane. It makes audiences laugh and cry and wonder. If you wanted to see it, now is your chance.”

This show opens on Tuesday 20 December at The Lowry in Salford and tours until 30 September 2023.

Creative Team

Neil gaiman.

Neil Gaiman is a storyteller. He is the No.1  Sunday Times  and  New York Times  bestselling writer of more than 45 books, graphic novels, and short stories, as well as the creator of films and television for all ages. Many of Neil Gaiman’s books, including  Stardust  and  Coraline , have been made into films or theatre productions;  Neverwhere  has been adapted for TV and radio;  American Gods  is an Emmy-nominated television series and the National Theatre production of  The Ocean at the End of the Lane ( UK National Book Awards 2013 Book of the Year) transferred to the West End in 2021 for a successful run, before announcing a UK and Ireland tour which will begin in December 2022.  The Ocean at the End of the Lane  is the first major play adaptation of Neil’s work. His work in TV includes as the showrunner for the adaptation of  Good Omens  (co-authored with the late Sir Terry Pratchett); as a writer on two episodes of  Doctor Who;  and appearances in  The Simpsons  as himself as well in  Arthur ,  The Big Bang Theory  and  Lucifer . The TV series  The Sandman  is an adaptation of his bestselling   sequence of graphic novels. According to the BBC,  The Sandman  is one of the ‘100 Novels That Shaped Our World’ and all three seasons of the Audible adaptation have been New York Times and Amazon Bestsellers. Neil Gaiman has been awarded a Writers for Writers Award, a Hugo Award, Locus and Bram Stoker awards, and is the first author to have won both the Carnegie and Newbery Medals for the same work. In 2017, he became a Goodwill Ambassador for UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. Joel Horwood

Joel is a playwright and dramaturg whose work for theatre includes The Ocean At The End of the Lane for the National Theatre; The Great Elephant Chase at Burgtheater, Vienna; Berberian Sound Studio at the Donmar Warehouse; The Little Match Girl for Shakespeare’s Globe and Bristol Old Vic; I Want my Hat Back for the National Theatre which received an Olivier Award nomination for Best Family and Entertainment Show; This Changes Everything for Tonic Theatre which was nominated for a WGGB ‘Best New Play’ Award; A Series of Increasingly Impossible Acts for Secret Theatre at the Lyric, Hammersmith and on UK tour; I Caught Crabs in Walberswick at the Pleasance, Edinburgh, on UK Tour and at the Bush; Food which won a Fringe First Award at the Traverse, Edinburgh and Mikey the Pikey at the Pleasance, Edinburgh. Work for screen includes Skins and The Reward which won the RED Connector Grand Prize in 2008. Joel has also adapted the Radiohead album OK Computer for BBC Radio 4.

Katy Rudd’s work in theatre includes Camp Siegfried at the Old Vic; The Almighty Sometimes at the Royal Exchange; A Curious Night at the Theatre at the Apollo; and The Butterfly at Salisbury Playhouse. As associate director theatre includes Groundhog Day (also on Broadway; Olivier Award for Best New Musical), Lungs and The Master Builder at the Old Vic; Pinocchio, Husbands and Sons and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (also on UK tour) at the National; Linda and The Twits at the Royal Court; and Mojo in the West End. Jherek Bischoff

Jherek Bischoff is a composer, arranger, producer and multi-instrumental performer. His work in theatre includes Andersen’s Stories, The Sandman, The Flying Classroom, Johnny Breitwieser and The Journey. His symphonies include Jump!Star and his ballets include Wash of Gray for Pacific Northwest Ballet. His work has been performed by orchestras and ensembles including The National Symphony Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Stargaze and yMusic, and he has collaborated with David Byrne, Robert Wilson and Anna Calvi amongst others. His compositions include work for Kronos Quartet, Lincoln Center, St Ann’s Warehouse and the Royal Conservatory. Jherek Bischoff’s releases include Cistern, Composed, Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire Walk with Me and Strung Out in Heaven: A Bowie String Quartet Tribute (co-release with Amanda Palmer). Jamie Harrison

Jamie Harrison is co-artistic director of Vox Motus and has co-created, co-directed, and designed all of the company’s work, most recently Bedknobs and Broomsticks on UK tour with Disney / Michael Harrison Entertainment, Flight (Critics’ Awards for Theatre Scotland, Best Design; Herald Angel; New York Times Theatre moments of 2018) at Edinburgh International Festival and Dragon (UK Theatre Awards, Best Production for Children and Young People), a collaboration between Vox Motus, National Theatre of Scotland and Tianjin People’s Theatre, China. Other recent work includes set and illusion design for Mozart’s The Magic Flute for Ex Machina and Quebec Opera Festival; magic and illusion design for The Ocean at the End of the Lane and Pinocchio at the National Theatre. He created the magic and illusions for the multiple Olivier and Tony award-winning production Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in London’s West End, on Broadway, in San Francisco, Melbourne and Hamburg. Harrison also designed the puppets and illusions for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. Jamie Harrison has won several international awards for his work including a special citation from the New York Drama Critics’ Circle and the San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics’ Circle ‘Excellence in a Theatre Specialism’ Award. In 2017 he was the recipient of the Edinburgh International Magic Festival’s Great Lafayette Award for outstanding contribution to stage magic. Finn Caldwell is a director, designer and performer and co-artistic director of Gyre & Gimble, a theatre company specialising in puppetry. His work in theatre includes Angels in America, The Light Princess and War Horse at the National. John Maddox founded Suspended Illusions Ltd after a decade of touring the world with theatre shows and circuses. Suspended Illusions designs, builds and integrates custom magic illusions, wire flying rigs and special effects for live performance. Their systems have been toured extensively throughout Europe and North America. His work for theatre includes Othello, Peter Pan, A Taste of Honey and The Ocean at the End of the Lane at the National Theatre; Newsies at Troubadour Wembley Park; Henry V at the Donmar Warehouse; Brian & Rodger and Habeas Corpus at the Menier Chocolate Factory; Dystopian Dream , a collaborative piece choreographed by Wang Rameriz and music by Nitin Sawney at the Sadler’s Wells and on international tour; The Secret Life of Humans in London and New York; and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (also on UK tour) and The Windsors: Endgame in the West End. ‘Like a gothy yoghurt starter’: how Neil Gaiman and an Australian string quartet fell in love

The English author says crossover project with FourPlay is ‘gloriously strange’ – and unexpectedly popular

N eil Gaiman is well known for his melodic, dreamy voice, which has been put to use on everything from audiobooks to voicing the Simpsons’s cat Snowball. But Neil Gaiman the singer? When he’d occasionally perform live with his ex-wife, the musician Amanda Palmer, his voice was described by the New York Times, perhaps a little unkindly, as “a novelist’s version of singing”.

Next month Gaiman is bringing that voice to the Sydney Opera House , where he’ll be performing with the Australian string quartet FourPlay. How is he feeling about singing on one of the most prestigious stages in the world?

“Terrified. Absolutely terrified,” Gaiman sighs. “I’ve had to learn to trust FourPlay. I’m always reassured by the fact that Lara can actually sing.”

“I’ve been a singer for 30 years and I’m equally terrified, Neil!” interjects Lara Goodridge, one part of FourPlay along with Shenzo Gregorio and brothers Tim and Peter Hollo. “We are all vulnerable on stage together. But I think that’s a really lovely part of it – we’re there to catch each other. It’s exciting to be that alive.”

How a goth English novelist and an Australian string quartet that does Metallica and Radiohead covers became a match made in heaven seems beyond words even for Gaiman, who recalls it as “like going on a blind date where you really hit it off”.

The author and band met in 2010 when FourPlay were commissioned by the Sydney Opera House to soundtrack a live reading of Gaiman’s novella The Truth is a Cave in the Black Mountains.

“A Neil story is a really meaty and fun thing to write to,” Goodridge says. “But having Neil in the room was terrifying …” Gaiman laughs, and Goodridge adds hastily “… for a short period of time, because we worked out that he’s awesome and wonderful. I think that is part of the magic of Neil: the beautiful, collaborative spirit that he has.”

That one show in Sydney led to Gaiman and FourPlay going on tour in the US and the UK, performing in Carnegie Hall and London’s Barbican. “At one point we were on stage in Hobart making weird sounds with David Byrne and Brian Ritchie,” Gaiman says. “I think it was Lara who actually said we had to record some of this, so it didn’t go to waste.”

Their album Signs of Life is the spooky result, a concept album based around a new zodiac contructed by Gaiman, along with a few other curios that snuck in – a haunting poem he wrote and performed about Australia Day back in 2011 ; his and Ben Folds’s song about Joan of Arc, titled The Problem with Saints.

At times, FourPlay’s spidery plucking and mournful bass recalls Bruno Coulais’s score for Coraline , the animated adaptation of Gaiman’s book of the same name: it seems there is something in his writing that can inspire a certain ethereal, grave eeriness.

“It’s like a gothy yoghurt starter,” Gaiman muses. “The gothy yoghurt starter that oozes through. You were going to say something so much more sensible than that, Lara.”

“No I wasn’t,” Goodridge laughs.

Gaiman and Goodridge sing together on Bloody Sunrise, a kind of dark doo-wop track about vampires. “I love that I can say things to Lara [like] ‘This is a lost Petula Clark song, if the follow-up song to Downtown was about a grumpy vampire being unable to bond with people’ and she’s like, ‘Oh right!’ And that’s exactly what comes out of her,” Gaiman says. “It is amazing.”

Signs of Life debuted at No 1 on Billboard’s classical crossover chart and has floated around there ever since. “I’m still baffled, amazed, delighted and sort of gloriously weirded out by that. I figured we’d sell some copies to the FourPlay fans and some copies to the Neil fans. But instead it has become its own thing,” Gaiman says. “There are people buying the album who have no idea who we are, they just like it. It sits there on the charts, slowly becoming The Dark Side of the Moon of classical crossover.”

Though he’s known for his novels, TV shows and comics, Gaiman has written for musicians before: in 2011 he, Palmer, Folds and Damian Kulash of OK Go formed the supergroup 8in8 with the aim of writing and recording eight songs in eight hours (they ended up with six in 12). When he writes for FourPlay, he sometimes comes to them with lyrics or a piece of writing to compose to. At other times, “we will be jamming around a concept and Neil is writing in the corner, our music as his background”, Goodridge says.

“There’s often a point where Peter will say to Shenzo: ‘You know that thing you used to do where you’d make a noise like a car crashing? Can you do that, but add a little bit of seagull to it?’ And somehow Shenzo makes a noise that sounds like a car crashing into a seagull,” Gaiman says. “I feel very privileged to be allowed in.”

The last time Gaiman was in Australia was in March 2020, putting the final touches on Signs of Life as the world was closing down. “That was where my life changed,” he says. “So for me, coming to Sydney and Melbourne and performing with these guys is a giant fuck you to Covid.”

At the Sydney Opera House and Melbourne’s Hamer Hall they will play Signs of Life along with “gloriously strange things nobody’s even heard yet”, as Gaiman puts it.

“There’s one piece based around rude words in a Victorian dictionary that I think is one of the coolest things we’ve ever done,” he says.

“It’s really long because there are a lot of rude words,” Goodridge adds.

“The Victorians really loved euphemisms for sex,” Gaiman says.

Signs of Life is out now. Neil Gaiman and FourPlay are performing at the Sydney Opera House on 15 January and Hamer Hall, Arts Centre Melbourne on 18 January.

It's coming sooner than you think

Neil Gaiman has shared some positive updates on The Sandman season 2 and Good Omens season 3.

Speaking to  Deadline  about the state of the industry amid cost-cutting, the writer opened up about how he feels the gold rush of TV funding is dwindling. However, he added: "That being said, you know, Dead Boy Detectives comes out in 10 days. I’ve seen half of Sandman season 2, and it’s astonishing. I’m writing Good Omens season 3, and we start shooting that in January. So I’m making stuff."

Both updates are pretty exciting. First of all, the fact that half of The Sandman season 2 is seemingly near finished means we may not be waiting too long for that one. They started filming it back in November 2023 , and released a first-look image at the time. 

Good Omens season 3 has had fewer updates, but Gaiman did previously tell SFX that he had it mapped out . While we don’t have any news on release dates yet, if that starts filming in early 2025, we might see it as early as next year. 

Recently, The Sandman star Kirby, who plays Death in the series gave GamesRadar+ some exclusive insight into the character , comparing them to her character in the new detective drama Sugar . "I was thinking of who I would liken Ruby to in terms of other characters that I've played," she said. "I didn't think of Death, but perhaps it's this idea of someone that holds great authority but also great sensitivity."
