Neil deGrasse Tyson Brings his Cosmic Collision Course to the Long Center

Neil deGrasse Tyson at The Long Center , Austin, TX, February 6, 2018 Photography by Jim Chapin

Intergalactic personality, award-winning astrophysicist, author, and favored science “it-guy” Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson brought his lecture “Cosmic Collisions” to The Long Center on Tuesday, February 6, 2018.

For this rescheduled Austin engagement, Dr. Tyson delivered his lecture “Cosmic Collisions,” focusing on all things that go bump in the night (and in the day). Yes, the universe wants to kill you: On occasion, these collisions—asteroid and comet impacts on Earth—can render life extinct. He explained why and how this happens and what we are doing about it.

In addition to dozens of professional publications and becoming a fixture in both our scientific and pop culture in his own right, Dr. Tyson has written and continues to write for the public. For five seasons, beginning in the fall of 2006, Dr. Tyson appeared as the on-camera host of PBS-NOVA’s spinoff program NOVA ScienceNOW—an accessible look at the frontier of all the science that shapes the understanding of our place in the universe. Dr. Tyson is the recipient of eighteen honorary doctorates and the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal, the highest award given by NASA to a non-government citizen.

Many shows impose ticket limits to allow as many people as possible to have equal access to seats. This is done as a deterrent to third party vendors, i.e. scalpers, who may purchase large blocks of seats and then resell them online at an inflated cost. The term “household” refers to any shared information on one or more accounts. This includes, but may not be limited to matching names, mailing and billing addresses, email addresses, phone numbers and credit card numbers. Any households that purchase more than the allowed number of tickets may have their order(s) refunded without notice.

Attention houston: celebrity scientist neil degrasse tyson has a warning for you.

Houston Neil deGrasse Tyson

Let’s face it: space may be stunning. The universe, in all its dazzling complexity, may be inspiring. But at any given moment, it could kill us all. Neil deGrasse Tyson would like remind you of that simple — and alarming — fact when he presents his talk, “Cosmic Collisions” on Monday, January 15, at the Jones Hall for the Performing Arts. Recently dubbed “America’s top astrophysicist” by Forbes , Tyson is a bona fide pop culture star who’s widely credited for making the cosmos cool. He serves as director of the world-renowned Hayden Planetarium, hosts a national radio show, and has been a staple on the TV talk show circuit. His rabid fans hang on every character of his Twitter feed , and pack his public appearances. There’s a Facebook page devoted to a (wishful) Tyson presidential run in 2020. His most recent book, Astrophysics for People In A Hurry , topped the New York Times best-seller list in 2017. He won over fans old and new, as the host of the rebooted version of Carl Sagan’s Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey , which secured 12 Emmy nominations and nabbed four. (Tyson is a protege of the late Sagan’s, and has assumed his cultural role.) He has become the voice, of sorts, of a generation that looks to science and reason. ( Update: Tyson announced on Saturday, January 13, that Cosmos will return for another season in 2019.)

Tyson’s talk centers on how cosmic collisions affect Earth, and could even render life extinct. Fans can expect musings from his work in science and astrophysics, and Tyson will also host a Q&A. We caught up with the star, in advance of his Texas tour , which brings him exclusively to the Lone Star State in January.

CultureMap: Many of us are blissfully unaware that there are near-miss collisions with our planet all the time. Should we be more concerned? Neil deGrasse Tyson: Well, “cosmic collisions” — for the purpose of this talk — will be interpreted very broadly. There are galaxies that collide — in spectacular, hundred-billion-year, slow-motion trainwrecks. There are particles that collide, and produce energy — in the cores of stars — that lead to supernova explosions. For the first time ever, we’ve been able to measure the collision of black holes, with a brand new kind of telescope. And, you have the collision of asteroids and comets with planets. That’s the one that concerns us the most, because it can render us, you know, extinct. So maybe we should cover that one first, in the talk. CM: It might be good to lead with that, yes. So, are you essentially saying to the layperson that Armageddon could be real — that one day, we may need Bruce Willis to save us from an asteroid? NDT: [Laughs] There were actually efforts to get rid of satellites in orbit, by the Chinese, called “kinetic kills.” But that makes debris in space, and that’s a problem. The Cassini spacecraft, which had been orbiting Saturn for 13 years, came to end, so we collided it with Saturn, which was poignant. So, this is a celebration and exploration of all the ways that cosmic collisions matter, in our lives and in the universe. CM: You’re known for calling yourself an educator. But you have 11 million Twitter followers. That’s quite the following for an educator. NDT: My Twitter following is crazy high, and I don't understand it. And, I still want to warn people, ‘You know, you realize you're following an astrophysicist, right? Did you do this by mistake?’ I feel like putting a disclaimer out there every month or so. CM: And yet people want you to run for president. NDT: I’m deeply flattered by that, and it’s an awesome responsibility, because there are people looking to me. But I’m an educator, so I don't ever want to be the object of people’s interest or affection. I would rather they become empowered by the science that I teach them, and they go off and try to influence the country, the world, with their newfound science literacy — knowing that there is an absence of science literacy in the governance. CM: We’re quite proud of NASA, here in Houston. But do you think that pride is felt beyond Texas? NDT: Places like Houston and NASA at Houston, I can tell you what you think is a local pride, what’s in your backyard, it’s a place you can walk by — and you probably know someone who’s working at Johnson Space Center, as a secretary, engineer, or an astronaut. It’s a point of pride as Houstonians. But, I will tell you, it’s a point of pride as Americans. CM: You’re quick to deflect from your own pop culture presence, and you note that science-based movies, and TV shows like CSI and Big Bang Theory have made science cool. NDT: With CSI , we had good-looking actors portraying scientists. These were young, sexy, male and female actors who you’d want to be — and they were scientists. And then you have Big Bang Theory , which became the number one show on television — in any genre. Those characters are a window into the lives of very smart, science-literate professionals. They’re endearing — they’re all weird — but you love all of them. And they have a Ph.D. physicist onset reviewing the scripts. The show has earned great respect from scientists. Bill Nye has been on. Stephen Hawking has been on. CM: And you’ve been on. NDT: Yes, but only once. If you watch that episode, you’ll realize why they never invited me back. I don’t know how to act.

And look at the series of movies since the 1990s, the science was taken seriously: The Core , Deep Impact , Contact . Then you have biopics of scientists with genuine marquee actors playing them, like A Beautiful Mind , The Theory of Everything , Hidden Figures . Previously, the subjects of biopics were actors, athletes, war generals.

So dare I assert that in recent times, the public has discovered scientists as real people. And whatever role I played in that, it is small. I’m a cog in a wheel that’s much bigger than me. CM: Speaking of TV: Cosmos was a beloved show, and brought science to a whole new audience. What was the secret to its success? NDT: What Cosmos has done is not only teach you, but establish a level of meaning and relevance in your life for the content, so you come away activated by the knowledge. CM: Any chance it’s coming back? And will (Hollywood celeb/ Family Guy creator) Seth MacFarlane produce? NDT: He’s a huge science fan, so if we come back, yes. We’re trying to get the band back together, but nothing is greenlit. CM: Your talk here warns of the collisions that could end life on Earth. But you’ve also noted another more clear and present danger — the lack of science and math in our educational system. Can you talk about the importance of STEM education in our current climate? NDT: If the country does not value STEM, either in the educational pipeline, or in the adult population that’s in control, then we will recede in the world’s arc of progress. CM: Are we receding, as a nation? NDT: As measured by every way that matters, yes. And by the way, it’s not a cliff that you fall off, you just fade to irrelevance. No one invites you to the conversation anymore. Where will the next meeting on radio wave communication take place? Not here, because we don't have the most powerful radio telescope. That's in China — opened in the last 18 months. If you don’t care about STEM — or you don’t know to care about STEM — then you will watch the United States continue to fade. CM: You’ve noted that we have more science programming available to us than ever before. So, surely you, as America’s favorite astrophysicist, have an opinion on the flat-earth crowd? NDT: [chuckles] The rise of the flat-earthers is evidence of two things: that we live in a country that protects free speech and the failure of our educational system — which somewhere in the K through 12, forgot to teach people what science is, and how and why it works. --- Tyson’s “Cosmic Collisions” starts at 7:30 pm, at the Jones Hall for the Performing Arts. Tickets are $39-$119 and can be purchased online . A limited number of VIP Meet & Greet tickets are available.

Successful Thai restaurateur picks Montrose for new fast casual concept

Country singer kacey musgraves comes to houston on milestone fall tour, prominent chemical company commits to citycentre's new office tower, surgery in space, pioneering houston doctor performs first-ever remote surgery in space.

A small surgical robot at the International Space Station completed its first surgery demo in zero gravity last week, and one of the surgeons tasked with the remote robotic operations on simulated tissue was Houston-based Dr. Theodoros Voloyiannis.

Voloyiannis took part in what is being referred to as “surgery in space” by being one of the six doctors remotely controlling spaceMIRA — Miniaturized In Vivo Robotic Assistant — that performed several operations on simulated tissue at the lab located in the space station. The surgeons operated remotely from earth in Lincoln, Nebraska. The remote surgeons worked to control the robot's hands to provide tension to the simulated tissue made of rubber bands. They then used the other hand to dissect the elastic tissue with scissors.

“I said during the procedure ‘it was a small rubber band cut, but a great leap for surgery,’“ Voloyiannis tells InnovationMap. “This was a huge milestone for me personally in my career.”

The robot was developed by Virtual Incision Corporation, and made possible through a partnership between NASA and the University of Nebraska. The team of surgeons took part in a demonstration that is considered a common surgical task, as they dissected the correct piece of tissue under pressure.

Latency is the time delay between when the command is sent and the robot receives it, and that was the big challenge the team faced. The delay was about 0.85 of a second according to what the colorectal surgeon who worked on spaceMIRA Dr. Michael Jobst said to CNN . The demo overall was a success according to the team, and posed a new-found adrenaline rush due to the groundbreaking innovation.

“The excitement of the new and the unknown,” Voloyiannis says on the feeling of doing the first operation of its kind. “I never thought I’d be doing something like this when I was in training and in medical school.”

Voloyiannis serves as the chairman of colon and rectal surgery for The US Oncology Network. He was chosen for this experiment due to his experience and expertise performing robotic colorectal surgery. Voloyiannis and the developers are hopeful that this type of technology will soon allow doctors to perform this specialized robotic surgery on patients living in rural areas without a specialized surgeon nearby, military battlefields, as well as regularly in space one day.

“The same concept of remote surgery regularly in space could certainly be entertained,” Voloyiannis says. “When you do things with an absence of gravity and perform a surgery in that environment — of course that changes the way we do things. When you have an absence of gravity with bodily fluids, it is a very hard surgery, but with partial gravity that idea can be entertained.

"Remotely, internet connectivity would have to be considered and you’d have someone remote like me here, while potentially there you’d have someone with less training doing the procedure there guiding the robot," he continues. "It’s quite the concept though.”

DR. NEIL DEGRASSE TYSON RETURNS TO ALTRIA THEATER

Apr. 24 , 2023, for immediate release.

Tickets on Sale Friday, April 28, at 10AM Local

(APRIL 24, RICHMOND, VA) Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson returns to Altria Theater on November 15, 2023, with ‘Cosmic Collisions’. Tickets go on sale to the general public Friday, April 28, at 10:00AM. Tickets can be purchased at altriatheater.com.

Neil deGrasse Tyson was born and raised in New York City where he was educated in the public schools clear through his graduation from the  Bronx High School of Science . Tyson went on to earn his BA in Physics from  Harvard  and his PhD in Astrophysics from  Columbia .

In 2001, Tyson was appointed by President Bush to serve on a twelve-member commission that studied the Future of the U.S. Aerospace Industry. The  final report  was published in 2002 and contained recommendations (for Congress and for the major agencies of the government) that would promote a thriving future of transportation, space exploration, and national security.

In 2004, Tyson was once again appointed by President Bush to serve on a nine-member commission on the Implementation of the United States Space Exploration Policy, dubbed the  “Moon, Mars, and Beyond”  commission. This group navigated a path by which the new space vision can become a successful part of the American agenda. And in 2006, the head of NASA appointed Tyson to serve on its prestigious Advisory Council, which guides NASA through its perennial need to fit ambitious visions into restricted budgets.

In addition to dozens of  professional publications , Dr. Tyson has written, and continues to write for the public. From 1995 to 2005, Tyson was a monthly essayist for  Natural History  magazine under the title  Universe . And among Tyson’s fifteen books is his memoir  The Sky is Not the Limit: Adventures of an Urban Astrophysicist ; and  Origins: Fourteen Billion Years of Cosmic Evolution , co-written with Donald Goldsmith. Origins is the companion book to the PBS NOVA four-part mini-series  Origins , in which Tyson served as on-camera host. The program premiered in September 2004.

Two of Tyson’s other books are the playful and informative  Death By Black Hole and Other Cosmic Quandaries , which was a  New York Times  bestseller, and  The Pluto Files: The Rise and Fall of America’s Favorite Planet , chronicling his experience at the center of the controversy over Pluto’s planetary status. The PBS NOVA documentary  The Pluto Files , based on the book, premiered in March 2010.

In February 2012, Tyson released his tenth book, containing every thought he has ever had on the past, present, and future of space exploration:  Space Chronicles: Facing the Ultimate Frontier .

For five seasons, beginning in the fall of 2006, Tyson appeared as the on-camera host of PBS NOVA’s spinoff program  NOVA ScienceNOW , which is an accessible look at the frontier of all the science that shapes the understanding of our place in the universe.

During the summer of 2009 Tyson identified a cadre of professional standup comedians to assist his effort in bringing science to commercial radio with the NSF-funded pilot program StarTalk. Now also a popular  Podcast , for three years it enjoyed a limited-run  Television Series  on the National Geographic Channel. StarTalk combines celebrity guests with informative yet playful banter. The target audience is all those people who never thought they would, or could, like science. In its first year on television and in three successive seasons, it was nominated for a Best Informational Programming Emmy.

Tyson is the recipient of twenty-one honorary doctorates and the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal, the highest award given by NASA to a non-government citizen. His contributions to the public appreciation of the cosmos have been recognized by the International Astronomical Union in their official naming of asteroid “13123 Tyson.” And by zoologists, with the naming of  Indirani Tysoni , a native species of leaping frog in India. On the lighter side, Tyson was voted “Sexiest Astrophysicist Alive” by  People Magazine  in 2000.

More recently, Tyson published  Astrophysics for People In A Hurry  in 2017, which was a domestic and international bestseller. This adorably readable book is an introduction to all that you’ve read and heard about that’s making news in the universe—consummated, in one place, succinctly presented, for people in a hurry.

That was followed in 2018 by  Accessory to War: The Unspoken Alliance Between Astrophysics and the Military , coauthored with Avis Lang, in 2019 by  Letters from an Astrophysicist , both New York Times Bestsellers, and in 2021 by  Cosmic Queries: StarTalk’s Guide to Who We Are, How We Got Here, and Where We are Going , coauthored with James Trefil.

Tyson served as Executive Science Editor and on-camera Host & Narrator for  Cosmos: A SpaceTime Odyssey , the 21st century continuation of Carl Sagan’s landmark television series. The show began in March 2014 and ran thirteen episodes in primetime on the FOX network, and appeared in 181 countries in 45 languages around the world on the National Geographic Channels.  Cosmos  won four Emmy Awards, a Peabody Award, two Critics Choice awards, as well as a dozen other industry recognitions. Tyson reprised his role as on-camera host for the next season of Cosmos— Cosmos: Possible Worlds , which premiered on the National Geographic Channel in March 2020 and on the FOX network in September 2020.

Tyson’s latest books are  Welcome to the Universe in 3D: A Visual Tour  (coauthored with J. Richard Gott III, Michael Strauss, and Robert J. Vanderbei) and  Starry Messenger: Cosmic Perspectives on Civilization .

Tyson is the fifth head of the world-renowned  Hayden Planetarium  in New York City and the first occupant of its Frederick P. Rose Directorship. He is also a research associate of the  Department of Astrophysics  at the American Museum of Natural History.

Neil deGrasse Tyson lives in New York City with his wife, a former IT project manager with Bloomberg Financial Markets.

“The Cosmic Perspective”   There is no view of the world as emotionally potent as the one granted by a cosmic perspective. It’s one that sees Earth as a planet in a vast empty universe. It profoundly influences what we think and feel about science, culture, politics, and life itself.

Neil deGrasse Tyson is an American astrophysicist, cosmologist, author, and science communicator. From 1995 to 2005, Tyson wrote monthly essays in the “Universe” column for Natural History magazine, some of which were published in his book Death by Black Hole . During the same period, he wrote a monthly column in Star Date magazine, answering questions about the universe under the pen name, Merlin. Material from the column appeared in his books Merlin’s Tour of the Universe and Just Visiting This Planet . Tyson served on a 2001 government commission on the future of the US aerospace industry, and on the 2004 Moon, Mars and Beyond commission. He was awarded the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal in the same year. In 2014, he hosted the television series Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey , a successor to Carl Sagan’s 1980 series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage . As a science communicator, Tyson regularly appears on television, radio and various other media outlets.

GREENVILLE JOURNAL

Neil deGrasse Tyson brings a ‘Cosmic Perspective’ to Greenville’s Peace Center

  • March 6, 2024

Neil deGrasse Tyson

Imagine that an alien from another planet pays a visit to Earth.

Surely this space traveler would be utterly confused to see humanity seemingly bent on self-destruction, according to prominent astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson .

“He would find our culture completely crazy,” Tyson said. “He’d see people fighting over what gods they worship, fighting over their skin color, fighting over who you love, fighting over which side of a line in the sand you were born on.”

This alien visitor, with his cosmic perspective, would have a lot of questions, Tyson said.

“Aren’t you all the same species? Don’t you all live on the same planet? Aren’t these all just big land masses that you’re living on? But you’ve divided them ?”

Tyson, perhaps the best-known science communicator since Carl Sagan, arrives at the Peace Center on March 13 to talk about the “Cosmic Perspective.”

Tyson looks at the Earth from outer space and sees our planet as a vulnerable blue dot populated by one human species.

He compares the cosmic perspective to the “Overview Effect,” the feeling of awe experienced by some astronauts as they see the Earth from space and feel a greater sense of connection to other people and the planet as a whole.

A transcendent view

“The Overview Effect changes you,” said Tyson, a best-selling author and director of the Hayden Planetarium in New York City. “You look down and you don’t see any national borders. It takes you out of the day-to-day grind, the day-to-day challenges and conflicts. You have a point of view that transcends them.

“The cosmic perspective is like that,” he added. “You see each other differently, that we’re more the same than different. We’re all the same species living on the same Earth that provides sustenance to us. If we celebrated that, what a different world it would be.”

Tyson, backed by a digital screen, performs his two-hour program without intermission.

“It’s rich in images and storytelling, an intellectual and emotional conversation,” he said, speaking from his office at the Hayden Planetarium. “It’s like you’re all sitting there in my living room and we’re talking about the subject together.”

Tyson has presented the “Cosmic Perspective” for several years, but the program frequently changes.

“The universe is always providing new insights to incorporate into the ‘Cosmic Perspective,’” he said.
