Destination Louisiane: Get an inside look at the Wild Country Safari Park

D ELHI, LA (KTVE/KARD) – Welcome to the Wild Country Safari Park, where they specialize in getting up, close, and personal with wildlife, giving you the real safari experience.

“There is nothing to be afraid of. We do not have animals that would hurt you or we would not have you back there with them,” said Denny Cahanin, tour guide at Wild Country Safari Park.

The park is an open animal enclosure. This means just like in the wild, all the exotic animals run together freely. Families can either drive through the park in their car or go on a guided tour. Either way, you get to enjoy these majestic creatures at arm’s length without getting out of the car.

“The animals actually just come up to the window and you feed them out of a cup. You don’t get to do that in many places,” said Debbie Broadway, manager of Wild Country Safari Park.

Roughly 500 animals and 30 different species call this place home.

“In the tour area, we have the large animals. We have water buffalo, bison, camels, zebra, zedonks, and seven different types of deer,” said Broadway.

On the guided tour, you will learn all about the lifestyle and habitats of some of those animals. The family-owned business welcomed the Northeast Louisiana community to the animal kingdom at the end of 2011, after Travis and Kathy Broadway bought the place. Since then, every animal there has become part of the Broadway family.

“My brother just said, ‘Hey, I need you to come and stay a few weeks and see what you think.’ Well, it turned into seven years and it’s because I love the animals,” said Broadway.

Officials said this drive-thru park is very educational for kids because not only do they get to interact with the animals but learn about the animals as well.

“One of the animals took the cup out of my hand. It’s always the camel,” said a kid who went through the safari.

“I really enjoy the people, especially the children who come. Most of them would never experience these types of animals, so it’s very rewarding,” said Broadway.

But the safari experience doesn’t stop there. In the welcome center, you’ll not only be greeted by human beings but birds, chinchillas, and bearded dragons. Then grab some feed and head outside to the two petting zoos. There you will find goats, kangaroos, deer, ostriches, and so much more!

The Wild Country Safari Park is open Tuesday through Sunday all year long. The pricing depends on a few things, including how old you are and which tour option you chose. Click here to see pricing.

The other drive yourself through Safari Park I have been to did not allow any feeding of animals and more variety of animals. That said, this was pretty darn cool seeing the animals look you right in the eye all up close and personal. It was like they were staring into my soul. Relatively inexpensive. I would recommend if you are doing other things in the area, not necessarily making a special trip just for this.

Great place to bring your kiddos! Not a large selection of animals however, it was educational and my 3 kids loved the up close and personal interaction they had with all the animals, especially the camels! It is a drive through experience so if you don't want zebra drool and donkey poo on your wheels you can opt for the guided tour ( for a extra couple of bucks )

We loved going to the Safari. It was so much fun. We can't wait to go back. I am happy to see the animals get to free roam.

I can honestly say I never had so much fun! We got there and the lady suggested we take the guided tour instead of just driving through the park (aimlessly) on our own. It is the BEST way to get the full experience of the animals. I laughed so hard from the second we took off. We had the BEST GUIDE in the world. He knew so much about the animals, gave all sorts of information and took the time to make sure everyone on the bus got to pet/feed all their favorite animals. I love the ZDONKS, half Zebra and half Donkey. They were the cutest things, running alongside the bus to get petted. I was a travel agent for 20 years, been on African Safaris. No where can you pet animals like that and all in one space. I took so many photos and I look back on them all the time. I will be back again, and again. Thank you so much.

This little Zebra stole the entire cup of treats! We laughed SO HARD!

We enjoyed all the animals and the employees were so nice! We will definitely be going back soon!

We had a great time! Well, most of us did. One of our group climbed into the back of the truck (on top of his bike) and wailed because he was afraid the bison was going to lick him. My wife and I were laughing so hard we couldn't breathe. My younger child tried to feed the bison then said "thank you" while pulling the cup back in. Enter the head of a bison into his lap! We eventually figured out the animals will back off if you start raising the window. Even a bison as big as our Honda Pilot was fairly gentle when we cut it off. There was a little drama when another animal started butting heads with a bison to get to the food. I think we got a new scratch but nothing major. Things calmed down when we got away from the huge animal herd. My terrified son stopped screaming and eventually came back to his seat. He even fed a zebra. How cool is that to be so close to a zebra you can pet it?! We also saw camels, a zorse, some donkeys and some antelope. The animals in the deer family (elk, maybe?) were least used to humans and did not allow us to feed them. Back at HQ, they gave us more feed for the nearby pens. We walked over and had a great time feeding deer and kangaroos. The deer liked to lick our hands--something about the salt, I think. Unlike the 45-lb bison tongue, their licks were like a little dog. It was sweet. We also got to feed some ostriches and see a llama. All-in-all a great time. Pro tip: keep your windows all the way up and lower them just enough to get the cup out. Otherwise you'll have a huge head in your lap!

We drove 20 minutes out of the way to visit this safari. We drove down a long beat up road to find a sign that said closed. It was 2:30 on a Tuesday.

Photo of Kerri R.

We had a great time at the zoo. The staff was very helpful and so kind. Definitely worth the drive.

Photo of Philip K.

Really fun wildlife park and petting zoo! Fun for the whole family. Feeding the animals from the car was exciting and made us all really laugh. Staff is very friendly, passionate and knowledgable.

Photo of Kari P.

If I could give more than 5 stars, I would! What a fun, interactive place! My husband and I went today and laughed harder than we have in years....I mean HUGE belly laughs! Where else can you have a bison lick you through your open window while a zebra eats from your kibble cup? Or have a camel munching out of your cup next to an impatient zebra? Debbie and Bennie were great hosts! Just a bit of advice, once you roll your windows down, keep them down!!

How great is Lion Country Safari? Zoo made this USA top 10 list for the seventh time!

drive through safari delhi louisiana

The results are in and once again Palm Beach County's Lion Country Safari has been named one of the top 10 Safari Parks in the country.

Taking seventh place on the list (which was released March 13), this is the seventh year in a row that the park has been named to the USA Today's "10Best" Readers' Choice list.

Opened in 1967 and situated on 600 acres, Lion Country Safari is Florida's largest drive-through safari and is home to hundreds of animals roaming wide open, natural habitats in large herds, prides and troops.

The four-mile-long, drive-through safari is divided into seven different habitats.

What animals are in Lion Country Safari?

Those areas include Las Pampas, Ruaha National Park, Kalahari Bushveldt, Gir Forest, Gorongosa Reserve, Serengeti Plains and Hwange National Park.

Some of the animals that guests see during their trek through the seven zones include aldabra tortoises, alpacas, Brazilian tapirs, greater kudus, impalas, ostriches, gemsbok, wildebeest, Asiatic water buffaloes, blackbucks, African lions, common elands, impalas, giraffes, zebras, southern white rhinoceros and many more.

The park features the largest herd of zebra on record in the western hemisphere, one of the largest herds of giraffe in the United States and a large herd of rhinos with a long history of breeding success.

Lion Country Safari not just a drive-thru zoo — best things to do on foot at this Palm Beach County park

Though the drive-through safari is the star of the park, there are many other fun things to do. Some of these include:

Kids can hop on some rides: Who could resist a Flying Elephant Ride? Also check out the Carousel and the Rio Grande Train.

On a hot day, get wet: A waterpark with fun features for cooling off including the Safari Splash Sprayground, Safari Water Slides and Safari Falls.

Feed the giraffe : At the Giraffe Feeding encounter, guests can stand on a platform (the better to get on giraffe level) to hand feed these majestic animals and maybe even get some great pictures.

Feed the birds: Check out the Lorikeet Feeding where participants can give these beautiful, charismatic birds a couple treats.

Get on a boat: A trip on the Safari Queen Pontoon Boat tour on Lake Shannalee and closer view of some of the park's birds and primates.

Get lost? : The park has a Safari Maze.

Play a round: This safari park has a 16-hole miniature golf course.

The nation's other top safari parks:

Taking seventh place on the list, the park was bested by The Wilds in Cumberland, Ohio; Safari West in Santa Rosa, Calif.; San Diego Zoo Safari Park in Escondido, Calif.; Fossil Rim Wildlife Center in Glen Rose, Texas; Turpentine Creek Wildlife Center in Eureka Springs, Ark.; and, coming in at number one, Lee G. Simmons Wildlife Safari Park, in Ashland, Neb.

Accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, Lion Country Safari continuously strives to be a leader in animal care, conservation, and education to inspire people through connections with wildlife in a family-friendly environment.
