Greece in December: 6 Best Things to Do
Greece in December is a popular European winter getaway, especially with the Christmas celebrations in every city, village, or island. But if you are expecting warm weather and endless hours chilling at the beach, you will be very disappointed (and get really cold if you try it!).
In December, Greeks take out all their woolen wintry clothes, go about their usual businesses, and decorate everything in a festive Christmasy way.
If you consider yourself a traveler, then you will find a wealth of exciting and interesting things to do in Greece in December. Here’s a guide to visiting Greece in winter , an extensive list of things to do in December, what to wear, as well as information about the weather and day trips you can take.
Some of the best things to do while visiting Greece in December are:
- Enjoy Greek traditional Christmas celebrations in Athens or Thessaloniki
- Discover Prespes Lakes in Northern Greece
- Explore Greece’s gorgeous mountainous villages of Zagori (Zagorochoria)
- Go on a 3-day trip to Delphi, Meteora, Thermopylae
- Venture on Argosaronic island hopping (Hydra, Poros, Aegina)

6 Awesome Things to Do in Greece in Winter!
1. explore athens, the ancient capital.
I love Athens because I can find everything I need in a modern city plus wherever I go, there is some historical monument with centuries or millennia of history behind it. And if this is not the first post of mine you are reading, then you already know what a history buff I am 😀
During Christmas, Athens is in its ‘most wonderful time of the year!’ transformed into a gigantic Christmas Park. The public spaces have impressive decorations, songs, and Greek Christmas cookies available at every bakery and cafe (I always get a couple of extra kilos on Christmas).
This is the best time to see Athens at its liveliest with sidewalk cafes full of people, restaurants with live music, and a club life that rivals any city in Europe and beyond. And of course, visit the numerous archaeological sites (half-price tickets until late March) and museums. This is a great time to take a private full-day tour of Athens’ most important sites and enjoy your day without the summer crowds.
Other great tours that I recommend while you are in Athens:
- Gourmet Food Walking Tour in Athens
- Cape Sounion and Temple of Poseidon Half-Day
- Private Biblical Tour of Ancient Corinth
- Nemea Wine Tour with Oenologists
Where to Stay in Athens
Athens has great public transit so you can stay in just about any central area and be well-connected. I personally recommend, the centrally located but also quiet spot Tripodon Plaka In the shade of Acropolis by GHH (Self-catering). This is ideal for a group of people up to 6, in the heart of old Athens, Plaka.
I wouldn’t procrastinate booking your Athens accommodation in the last 10 days of December, no matter where you decide to stay. Athens is a popular place to be for the holiday season, and you’ll soon see why!

2. Discover Northern Greece’s Largest City
Thessaloniki (northern greece in december).
I would be lying if I said that Thessaloniki isn’t among my top three favorite cities in Greece. This stunning ancient city, built around the Thermaikos Gulf, is undoubtedly even more beautiful in December and during Christmas.
Landmarks will be covered in Christmas lights, or have lights projected on them. There will be art, music, and dance performances during December that will cheer you up and put you into the festive mood of Thessaloniki.
Some of the best things to do in Thessaloniki are:
- Indulge in probably the best food tasting in Greece. Go to the Thessaloniki port, find one of many tsipouradika , taverns offering traditional food with tsipouro or ouzo, and have one of the best meals of your life. If you would like to combine sightseeing with food, book this 6-hour food and culture tour
- Walk by the beautiful long promenade by the sea, stop at the umbrellas site and the 15th century White Tower
- Go to Ladadika area, a bustling and trendy part of town, close to the port, with gorgeous bars and clubs overlooking the water
- While you’re in Thessaloniki, you can’t miss the famous Rotonda one of the oldest and most important buildings of the Roman period (late 3rd and early 4th century AD)
Where to Stay in Thessaloniki
Electra Palace is the best hotel in Thessaloniki. It is a beautiful waterfront location overlooking Aristotelous Square and surrounded by trendy bars and restaurants.
Amazing Day Trips from Thessaloniki are:
- Travel to Chalkidiki, to Ouranoupoli, and take a cruise around the Holy Mount Athos
- Visit Vergina, the site of ancient Aigai the first capital of Macedon
3. Get Amazed at Prespes Lakes
248 km west of Thessaloniki, in the mountainous northwestern Macedonia part of Greece, is located in the National Park of the spectacular 2 Prespes lakes. The Large Prespa Lake, the largest lake in the Balkans, is divided between Greece, Albania, and North Macedonia.
Prespes Lakes is a virgin natural paradise, a beautiful wetland with snow-covered mountain peaks in December and beech forests. There is a wild abundance of fauna with 260 species of birds and 23 species of fish. Moreover, the coast of the lakes is dotted with gorgeous small settlements and historical monuments of archaeological interest.
Some of the best points of interest in Prespes Lake are:
- Vidronissi island, with one of the largest cormorant colonies in Greece. Access is prohibited, as is any kind of sound. Even the chapel of Agios Georgios remains closed to avoid any disturbance to the cormorants and the silver pelicans
- Walk across the 650-meter footbridge to the tiny inhabited islet in Small Prespa. Visit the Basilica of Agios Achilleios, of the 10th century
- Walk around the village of Psarades. Here people will tell you that they were born on boats. Fishing and the lake are their life. When I was last in Psarades, it was crispy cold but there was no wind, and that made walking around pleasant. I wandered around the pier and looked into the crystal clear lake where huge fish were swimming. I so look forward to going back to this incredible place!
- Go to Florina town for its nightlife
- Drive to Pisoderi ski resort, drink hot chocolate, and ski on its great slopes. Pisoderi is of the 19 organized ski resorts in Greece
- Discover the traditional Nymfaio village and visit the Arcturos bear sanctuary
Where Best to Stay in Prespes Lakes:
Dora’s House at Agios Germanos is a beautiful traditional mansion in Prespes Lakes.
White Mountain is a traditional chalet in Pisoderi, close to the ski center (self-catering breakfast materials provided, great for a group of people).
How to reach Prespes Lakes
You can fly to Kastoria airport, which is 65 km from Prespes. Or you can fly to Thessaloniki, and rent a car . Drive from Thessaloniki to Prespes and explore all the beautiful villages in between. Buses connect every corner of Greece and trains from Athens to Thessaloniki. Check at the end of this post about buses and trains in Greece.
4. Discover the Magical Zagorochoria
Zagorochoria or Zagori may sound like it is one place but actually, it is a cluster of 46 lovely villages! One of my favorite Zagori villages is Monodendri . It is located in the northwestern region of Greece amidst the mountains of Pindus in Epirus. Zagorochoria is one of the favorite winter destinations among Greeks and gets busy in December, especially during Christmas.
There is definitely something magical about spending the Christmas season here. Not only are there things you can only do in Winter in Zagor i, such as tasting the local Christmas pies, but the landscape looks absolutely gorgeous once fresh snow has fallen.
Zagori is surrounded by Mount Mitsikeli, the Aoos River, and Mount Tymfi on all four sides making hiking one of the best things to do in the area. Honestly, I can’t imagine myself going to this stunning place and not hiking!
Must-do Experiences in Zagorochoria
- Walk the cobblestone villages full of traditional stone mansions. The most popular villages are Mikro and Megalo Papigko.
- Hiking at Aoos National Park
- Hike at the Dragonlake of Tymfi or Smolikas .
- Try the local cuisine and the famous milk, cheese, pumpkin, or sweet pies.
Where to Stay in Zagorochoria
This can be a difficult decision to make but with Papigko you can’t be wrong. One of the best hotels in Megalo Papigko is the Pantheon with stunning views of Mount Astraka.
Aristi village is another gorgeous option to choose as your base and one of the most developed villages in Zagorochoria. It offers everything the visitor will need and perhaps the best accommodation for someone looking for luxury on their trip! One good example of luxury with stunning views is Aberratio Boutique Hotel .
How To Reach Zagorochoria: The closest airport to Zagori is that of Ioannina which is located at a distance of about 64 kilometers and takes 1 hour to cover the whole distance. From Ioannina, you should definitely rent a car and drive to Zagori through a picturesque and impressive landscape.

5. Go to Delphi, Meteora & Thermopylae
If you are planning to visit Greece in December then you must visit the UNESCO sites of Delphi and Meteora , so beautiful in winter , especially if you happen to see them covered in snow. Delphi and Meteora involve uphill walking and stair climbing with no trees or shade, so it is much easier to do so in the cold weather rather than at 35 C during summer.
If you will be traveling from Athens with a rental car then you can make this a fantastic road trip with stops along the way:
Some of the must-sees in your road trip are:
- Livadia town and the area with the small waterfalls (Krya Nera) for a morning coffee
- The UNESCO Monastery of Osios Loukas near Distomo
- Arachova village, 10 km from Delphi Archaeological site
- You can go skiing to the largest and best-organized ski resort in Greece, Parnassos Mt (where Delphi lies)
- Stop at Thermopylae, the strategic place where in 480 BC Thermopylae was the place where the Greek army defeated the huge Persian army. Visit the Thermopylae’s Innovative Centre of Historical Information
- Drive to Kalambaka and Meteora Monasteries
If you don’t like driving in winter you should book one of the best-reviewed tours in GetYourGuide like a 2-day tour to Delphi and Meteora or Delphi and Meteora: 3-Day Tour from Athens .

6. Indulge in Argosaronic Island-Hopping
Winter is the best time to really discover the Greek islands, experiencing the true magic behind the hustle and bustle of summer. The Argosaronic islands are perfect for a getaway from wintry Athens as they are so close and lively, especially on weekends. There are seven islands in the Argosaronic group but the most vibrant ones are Hydra, Poros, and Aegina.
Tip: Book your ferries at the last minute, to make sure that the weather allows the ferries to run to the islands
Hydra Island
Hydra Island in winter will have a rough sea, impressive winter landscapes, and few inhabitants who retreat to their homes as time passes. But you should not be discouraged. This is your chance to stroll through its magnificent alleys in peace, take photos of the many stray cats (neutered mainly by the local group), enter a traditional cafe (Kafenio), and socialize with the locals drinking Greek coffee.
I always take Greek coffee with some sugar as it is a bit strong, although I drink my filter coffee black. Go to the taverns that only the locals eat and feel like a real Greek. The ferry to Hydra will take you in about 1.5-2 hours, depending on the boat you will book.
Want to know more about Hydra? Read here a detailed post on what to do on Hydra Island .
Poros Island
Poros is another favorite island of mine. You can hike the route that leads to the Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi, to the remains of the Poseidon Sanctuary, or any of the countless paths to discover nature. Don’t miss climbing the Clock Tower in Poros town to see a panoramic view of Poros island.
Poros in winter can be toured in a day. So if you have time left, it’s worth stopping by Galatas to visit the famous Lemon Forest. It may not have the colors of spring, but the walk will certainly fascinate you. The ferry to Poros will take you in about 1- 2,5 hours, depending on the boat you will book.
Read here my detailed post on Poros Island.
Aegina Island
Aegina is an island so close to Piraeus ( ferries take you there in 40 minutes) that you can visit it even every weekend in December and it is quite lively in winter for exactly that reason. This means you have options for coffee, food, and shopping from traditional grocery stores.
Aegina is an amazing island for hiking to areas with great archaeological interest (Temple of Athena Aphaia, site of Kolona, Paleochora), large Greek Orthodox monasteries, and centuries-old olive groves. You may also have heard that Aegina produces very tasty pistachios that you can buy from any of the shops on the island.

Weather in Greece in December
Generally speaking, December will be cold with rainy and dark grey days. The northern you go to Greece the colder it will be, with some snow on the highest mountains and villages. Northern Greece is significantly colder, requiring gloves and maybe even a woolen hat.
But not every day will be like that. We also get crisp sunny days that can be crystal clear, with blue skies, and delightfully mild temperatures. The temperatures in Athens reach an average high of 15 C while in Thessaloniki will be around 12C.

FAQ: How to Drive in Greece in Winter
- Always carry chains for your tires, you never know when the next crazy blizzard will find you
- Most of the country is connected by a highway system that uses tolls – open all year through. However, smaller roads in the mountains might be closed due to heavy snow
- Belts are mandatory and you get a huge fine if you haven’t fastened them up
- Young children should always be kept in their special seats, fastened, in the back seat. Children under 10 are not allowed in the front seat
- Driving and talking on the phone also can give you a gigantic fine, use hands-free options
- It’s illegal to drive with a blood-alcohol level of more than 0.05%
- The middle lane of a 3-lane highway is used for overtaking – this is different from most places in the world where it is the outside lane
- The high-speed roads are in excellent condition. When you get off the main highways, the roads get significantly smaller, and as all the ski resorts are on mountains, they may look a tad intimidating
- All the ski resorts in Greece have parking places and they keep the roads clear from too much snow or add some salt to make them less slippery
- Read here some regulations about vehicles in Greece .
FAQ: What to wear in Greece in December
- Good walking shoes for exploring ruins and walking along cobblestone streets (spike heels at historic sites are forbidden because they can damage the ancient areas)
- Appropriate thick socks
- Scarf, knit hat , and gloves
- Layers: a long-sleeved shirt, jumpers, and a medium-sized winter coat will suffice unless you go hiking in the mountains with a lot of snow and ice. Then you will need a good hiking parka.

December in Greece: Weather and Event Guide
Kitti Boonnitrod/Getty Images
If you're planning on spending the holiday season in Greece this December, you'll be happy to find low hotel rates and fewer crowds, but you may be wondering what winter is like in this famously sunny destination. If you're seeking a break from the cold, you'll find mild, but not warm, weather in most parts of the country.
It probably won't be warm enough to enjoy the beaches, but it's still nice enough to explore the ruins and beautiful islands and coastline. Plus, traveling in December offers the added bonus of experiencing the Christmas season in Greece. And even if you don't visit the mountains seeing them topped with snow is quite the sight.
December Weather in Greece
Across Greece, the average temperatures in December can reach highs of 57 Fahrenheit (14 Celsius) and lows of 43 F (6 C). It differs from city to city and also can vary drastically depending on if you are traveling to the mainland or among the islands. Generally, both are cold and rainy, but some islands like Crete and Rhodes, which are more south, are sunnier.
You can go skiing if you take a trip to the mountains. For resort towns like Aráchova and Kalavryta, December is still pretty early in the season, but you might get lucky with some fresh snow. Greece is pretty dry year-round, but December is one of the rainier months. It may not be the best month to visit the Greek beaches, but the temperature is still mild and comfortable, especially when compared to other countries in northern Europe.
What to Pack
With mild temperatures throughout the month, you probably won't need to pack your heavy winter gear unless you are planning on getting outdoorsy in the mountains. However, the temperatures are on the cooler side in December so make sure you pack long pants, sweaters, and warm jacket. Remember, it will get cold at night, so you may want to bring a scarf and hat.
December Events in Greece
In December, there's a lot going on in the lead up to Christmas Day and New Year's Eve. In comparison with most Western European countries , Greece's celebration is solemn and moving. It's a time for faith and family, with blissfully few of the commercial trappings visitors are accustomed to seeing elsewhere.
There will usually be a small travel crunch just before Christmas and just after January 1 and again after January 6, as some Greeks go home for the holidays and then return to Athens. Note that many businesses, sites, and museums will close irregularly through the holiday season and especially during celebration days, for which every town has their local traditions.
- The feast of St. Nikolaos is on December 6, which is when many Greeks exchange gifts.
- In Athens, Syntagma Square (as well as Kotzia and Klefthmono) will be decorated with ornaments made by schoolchildren in December.
- Up in Florina, a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Thessaloniki, December 23 and 24 you can see the traditional holiday Bonfire Festival.
- On the island of Chios on New Yer's Eve, ship models are created and carried around by groups of fishermen singing songs.
- On New Year's Eve, look for a free city-sponsored concert and fireworks.

What to do in Greece in December
Getting the most out of your trip but with lesser crowds has seldom been more true than in Greece! Here’s your December guide.
It’s hard to picture Greece without imagining scorching summer days, postcard-perfect islands, and stunning stretches of sandy coastline. This Mediterranean destination is undoubtedly a favorite with summer holidaymakers, but it has a whole lot to offer in the winter, too.
If you like the idea of swapping your shorts and light shirts for cozy layers — and having the country’s most iconic historic sites almost entirely to yourself — you’ll love Greece in winter.
So, go ahead and book that discounted off-season flight, fill your bags with comfy cardigans, and start planning your Mediterranean getaway — here are the best things to do in Greece in December.
Travel to: Greece
Explore mainland Greece
So many visitors spend an all-too-brief day or two in Athens before moving onto the islands, but winter is a fantastic time to explore mainland Greece — especially the country’s modern capital.
With its pleasant winter weather, alluring ancient ruins, and cosmopolitan atmosphere, Athens is a destination that wows visitors year-round, December included! You can spend your time here visiting archaeological treasures, dining at renowned restaurants, and shopping at colorful street markets and chic designer shops. And if the weather takes a turn for the worse, you’re never too far from a world-class museum.
From Athens, you can plan day trips to historically significant destinations like Delphi or Mycenae and Epidaurus. Further north, the seaside city of Thessaloniki and the mesmerizing monasteries of Meteora are well worth a visit in winter, too.
Visit iconic ancient sites (without the tourist hordes)
Want to get stellar photos of Athens’ spectacular ancient ruins without any people around? If you visit in December, that’s actually possible!
While the high season sees the city’s most popular attractions engulfed by a never-ending stream of people, visiting in winter is the complete opposite. This means you won’t have to wait in frustrating queues or fight your way through crowds of tourists and throngs of selfie sticks to get a glimpse of the Parthenon. Enjoyable sightseeing experiences and tourist-free photos are essentially a given!
Fill up on hearty Greek winter staples
Another benefit of visiting Greece in winter? You can try a range of traditional dishes you wouldn’t usually find in the summertime. Much like the country’s most celebrated foods, Greece’s hearty winter staples are fresh, delicious, and big on flavor.
Get your Greek comfort food fix with lahanodolmades (stuffed cabbage leaves served with an egg and lemon sauce), fasolada (bean soup), or giouvarlakia (meatball soup featuring a creamy egg-lemon sauce). Then, wash it all down with the Greek equivalent of mulled wine — AKA rakomelo, a potent drink made with a mix of raki, spices, and honey.

See a different side of the Greek Islands
We’ve all seen photos of the Greek Islands in the height of summer: the sun is always shining, the whitewashed villages are always swoon-worthy, and the beaches always look impossibly idyllic. That’s not quite what the Greek Islands look like in December, but they’re still spectacular nonetheless.
Yes, it’ll be cooler, windier, and much, much quieter compared to the summer months, but if your perfect holiday involves loads of walking and hiking by day and cozying up to a good book and a glass of wine by night, you might just fall in love with the Greek Islands in winter.
Larger islands like Crete, Rhodes, and Corfu are great options for a Greece winter getaway since they’re more likely to retain some life throughout the off-season months. If you’re hoping for sunny weather and pleasant temperatures, Crete is probably your best bet; winters are warmer here due to its southerly location.
Get into the festive spirit, Greek style
If you’re visiting Greece near the Christmas holidays, you’re in for a treat! Cities across the mainland and the islands will be decked out in dazzling decorations, but Athens is an especially festive destination during the most wonderful time of the year.
To get into the holiday spirit in Greece’s capital, admire the giant Christmas tree in Syntagma Square, visit one of the city’s many ice skating rinks, or grab a hot chocolate at Little Kook, a cafe in Psyrri that looks like a Christmas fairy-tale come to life in December.
All the sightseeing and festive fun will probably leave you feeling peckish, so head to the nearest bakery to fill up on traditional Greek holiday sweets. Melomakarona (biscuits flavored with honey, cinnamon, orange, and clove) and kourabiedes (buttery shortbread-type biscuits coated in powdered sugar) are two of the most popular desserts — and they’re both delightfully delicious.
Hit the slopes
Greece is synonymous with sun, sea, and sand, but a large portion of the country is mountainous — which means it’s also a great destination for a ski holiday.
You’ll find top-quality ski facilities throughout Central and Northern Greece , but Parnassos Ski Resort — located two hours north of Athens and near Delphi — is a favorite among winter enthusiasts. The resort offers an impressive network of cross-country trails, 13 lifts, and more than 20 ski runs for all abilities.

Visiting Greece in December: A few things to keep in mind
- Traveling between the Greek Islands can be trickier in the winter due to reduced ferry services. To avoid any hassle or disappointment, consider sticking to one island rather than island-hopping between two or three.
- Finding accommodations on the islands can be tricky, too. Many hotels shut down over winter, so be sure to reserve your accommodations in advance (and double-check the heating situation before booking).
- Athens’ archaeological sites have shorter opening hours in winter. Some of the major attractions may close as early as 3 PM in the off-season, so be sure to plan your sightseeing accordingly.
- Pack warm layers. The winter weather is typically mild in Greece, but it’s also changeable. Windy, rainy (and sometimes even snowy) conditions are possible, so remember to pack for all seasons.
- Keep your expectations in check. If you’re hoping to sunbathe and hit all the hottest restaurants and nightlife spots in the Greek Islands in December, you’ll likely end up disappointed. If, on the other hand, you’re prepared for finicky weather, and you’re keen to get a glimpse of authentic Greek life when the tourists have dispersed, you’ll have a fabulous time.

- As winter sets in, it brings with it cooler and occasionally chilly weather throughout the country.
- Temperatures range from 8°C to 16°C (46°F to 61°F) .
- December falls in the rainy season in Greece, with an increase in rainfall compared to previous months, particularly in the northern regions and islands.
- December is considered the low tourist season in Greece, with fewer crowds and lower costs.
It’s fair to say December might not be the most obvious — or popular — month to visit Greece. Understandable, given that the country tends to conjure images of beautiful breaches, exploring ancient sites beneath a big, blue sky, and sipping al fresco sun-downers.
While the weather can be unpredictable, and the heat is definitely turned down, December can be a rewarding time to visit Greece. This is especially the case if you’re keen to visit the country’s ancient attractions, and are on a budget.
And the reasons? Fewer visitors mean you might be able to bag accommodation for up to 50% off the high season price, plus you won’t have to queue to get into the country’s top sights and museums. Once inside, you’ll most likely have free reign of said sights and museums — all the better for full immersion.
Add to add that Christmas ice rinks, festive bazaars and free events on Athens’ public squares, and visiting Greece in December has plenty to commend it.

Stating the obvious, but don’t expect the weather in Greece in December to be anything like the scorching hot days and balmy evenings you’ll experience during the summer months.
One thing to note is that Greece covers a pretty vast area, and temperatures vary. Overall, though, the weather in Greece in December sees a country-wide average of 12°C. Depending on where you’re travelling from, this may well be an improvement on bitterly cold conditions.
The further south you go, the warmer it’ll be. So, for example, while the northern city of Thessaloniki averages daily temperatures between 2°C and 11°C, Athens’ December temperatures range between 8°C. and 15°C. As for the sea, expect average temperatures between 14°C and 16°C.

We won’t sugar-coat the truth. December is one of the rainiest months in Greece. In general, the weather can be unpredictable — a mix of clouds and rain showers broken by bursts of sun.
In addition, note that the mountainous north sees snowfall in the winter months — more on that later.

Visiting Greece in December means fewer crowds. With that comes a reduction in the costs of accommodation and flights.
While this is great for your pocket, be aware that some hotels and guest houses close for the winter months. You should also expect a reduction in flights and ferry services.
In fact, some of the smaller islands essentially close down for the winter in terms of offering visitors places to stay, eat and be entertained — choose your destination wisely.

Of course, what you pack and wear in Greece in December depends on where exactly you’re heading, but we’re generally talking jumpers, coats and scarves.
Given the likelihood of rain (or snow, depending on your exact destination!), you’ll also want waterproof outer attire and a brolly.
If you’re heading to the warmer south, you might want to bring some lighter-weight outfits for the sunnier days.

December also marks the start of the Christmas season, with vibrant decorations and markets in cities like Thessaloniki and Athens. Overall, December allows you to discover Greece’s cultural richness in a more intimate and festive setting.
Greece Weather in December 2024
If you are planning on a trip to Greece during December, get ready to experience a transition into its winter season. The weather is generally mild, yet relatively cool, with temperatures ranging from around 10 to 15°C in the mainland and major cities. However, the mountainous regions and northern areas may experience colder temperatures, occasionally dropping to single digits. Rainfall is moderate, with an average of 65-85 mm across the country. Coastal regions and islands may witness slightly higher levels of precipitation.
Days are shorter, providing about 9 hours of daylight on average. The climate lends itself to exploring historical sites, cities, and museums comfortably. Coastal areas, especially Athens, Thessaloniki, and Crete, showcase a festive atmosphere, with Christmas decorations, markets, and cultural events. While December offers a quieter and less crowded experience, it’s essential to be prepared for some closures or reduced services, particularly in more tourist-dependent areas and on certain islands. Overall, it’s an ideal time for those seeking a more authentic Greek experience amid a festive, winter backdrop.
What to Wear in Greece in December 2024?
The weather tends to be cool and relatively mild. To stay comfortable, it’s advisable to pack layers. Start with a medium-weight jacket or coat to keep warm, especially during the evenings when temperatures can dip. Consider bringing sweaters, long-sleeved shirts, and thermal undergarments for added insulation. Pair these with pants, jeans, or long skirts for daytime activities. It’s a good idea to pack both closed-toe shoes, like comfortable walking boots or sneakers, and waterproof footwear as there may be some rain.
Additionally, don’t forget to bring an umbrella and a hat or beanie to keep you dry and warm. Accessorise with scarves and gloves for extra warmth. While coastal areas may have a milder climate, regions with higher altitudes or in the north might require heavier winter apparel. Always check the weather forecast before your trip for more precise packing.
Visitor Arrivals: Is Greece Crowded During December?
Greece is generally not crowded during December, as it’s considered the off-season for tourism. The colder temperatures and the approach of winter deter many tourists from visiting, resulting in fewer crowds at popular attractions and destinations. Major tourist spots, historical sites, and islands are noticeably quieter, offering a more intimate and peaceful experience. Cities like Athens and Thessaloniki may still have a lively atmosphere due to local festivities and Christmas markets, but they are far less crowded compared to the bustling summer months.
Accommodation and flights are often more affordable and readily available. However, popular holiday destinations or ski resorts might see a slight increase in visitors during the Christmas and New Year period. Overall, December is an excellent time to explore Greece for those seeking a tranquil and authentic travel experience.

Visiting Athens for the Christmas Season
As someone who resides in Athens, I can attest that the Christmas season is such a great time to come to the Greek capital!
The city transforms into a little mini winter wonderland where you only need a light coat to be comfortable ; ) I just love how we have milder temperatures compared to most of Europe .
Syntagma Square, in central Athens, becomes the epicenter of festivities. You will find a massive Christmas tree erected with twinkling Christmas lights.
Often in December, you might come upon free concerts and live music events. Typically this will take place near the Hellenic Parliament building.
Best Day Trips From Athens during December
There are some amazing day trips from Athens that you don’t want to miss when traveling in December.

While you could try and navigate the public transport yourself to reach the Temple, a guided tour is the way to go.

Weather in Athens in the Winter Months
Traditionally, November marks the beginning of Athens’ winter season. It’s during this time that the weather transitions from the warm days of autumn to more mild temperatures.
This is my favorite time for making day trips or exploring the city center.
My experience in November in Athens is generally pleasant, with an average high temperature that’s comfortable for walking around ancient sites like the Acropolis Museum.
However, days of rain do increase , and they can feel like they come out of nowhere. I’d recommend packing the umbrella.
If you are stuck on a rainy day, The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center is a great indoor option.
Let’s call December the magical month in Athens ! Mainly due to the Christmas holidays.
Not considered the coldest month , but with the average temperature dipping, you’ll need some warm clothes.
Expect a fair share of sunny days, which make for beautiful sunsets over ancient Greece’s landmarks.
If you’re lucky, you might even catch some early morning hours when the city is quieter.
The simple Christmas market at Syntagma Square has become the best part of the city center, offering a variety of holiday treats and crafts.
January is the coldest month in Athens but don’t let that stop you from visiting. I am going to bet it still features mild temperatures compared to other European cities .
Days of rain are common, but so are sunny days, making for a diverse weather experience.
New Year’s Day celebrations provide an unforgettable experience, especially if you’re in the city centre near the Greek National Opera.
Due to the relative humidity and dew point , you might find the air to be crisper, but still comfortable for walking around.
February is similar to January, though it’s often considered the wettest month of the year . Rainy days are more frequent, but don’t let that deter you.
The Acropolis Museum and Benaki Museum are excellent indoor venues to explore Athens’ rich history.
Daytime temperatures are moderate, and visiting places like Lycabettus Hill offers a unique vantage point of the city, particularly during the earliest sunset times of the year.
As winter starts to wrap up , March brings back more pleasant temperatures and longer daylight hours.
The city starts gearing up for the high-traffic summer months, but big crowds are still at bay.
This makes March a great time for a winter visit, especially if you’re interested in a guided tour of ancient sites or a small boat trip around the Saronic Gulf.
Weather stations report an increase in hours of sunshine, making it a great option for outdoor activities.
So, from November to March, Athens offers a range of weather conditions that can suit a variety of travel plans.
Each month has its own charm, making winter a good time of the year to appreciate the city’s many facets, from its ancient history to its vibrant modern life.
Benefits of Visiting in December
Another benefit of the Christmas season is fewer crowds at key tourist attractions.
Whether it’s the Acropolis of Athens or the Ancient Agora, you can enjoy these historical sites without the summer rush.
Museums like the National Archaeological Museum and the Museum of Cycladic Art are quieter this time of year as well, giving you the space to appreciate the artifacts and exhibitions at your own pace.
New Year’s Eve is another event to look forward to, with festivities usually culminating in an impressive fireworks display that illuminates the entire city.
Between the milder weather, festive events, and reduced crowds at archaeological sites and museums, the Christmas season is a unique and wonderful time to truly enjoy all that Athens has to offer.
Can Visit the Greek Islands in December?
While the larger islands such as Crete , Rhodes , and Naxos are all open year-round, they aren’t going to be warm, and many shops will be closed.
If you are dead set on visiting a Greek Island then I would look into the ferry to Crete or potentially flights. Crete would be the best place to visit in December.
Hotel Prices in In December
The best part about visiting Athens in December is the reduced accommodation prices .
Since Athens is not the go-to destination for many travelers in Europe in December you can get a steal.
When I first visited Athens in the winter I took advantage of the low room rates at the Coco Mat Athens BC .
The only downside was that the rooftop pool was not open . But the comfortable, and stylish hotel was finally in my price range!

Protect Your Trip With Travel Insurance!
When booking travel abroad I am always sure to purchase travel insurance !
I treat my trip like a precious investment that I want to protect. Even visiting the safest destinations theft and loss can occur.
And even though unlikely, there is always a chance you can get sick leaving you needing medical care.
Most home healthcare insurance policies don’t cover you when you are abroad!
Don’t take the risk and go unprotected, especially when travel insurance is so affordable.

Athens in December – A Complete Guide
If you’re hankering for a winter city break, Athens may not be the first place that springs to mind. The cities of Prague, Krakow, and Budapest are all considered Christmassy destinations (and let’s not forget Germany’s world famous Christmas Markets!), but visiting Athens in December is less of an obvious choice. However, having just returned from a winter weekend in Athens with Jet2CityBreaks , I can honestly say that December is a great time to visit Athens, and I actually preferred visiting Athens in December than in May, which was when I’d previously visited.
In this post, I’ll go into detail about why December is a great time to visit Athens, as well as what kind of weather to expect, the best things to do in Athens in winter, where to stay, and much more. Is Athens worth visiting in December? Let’s get into it.
Table of Contents
Why visit Athens in December?
Capital of Greece and the birthplace of democracy, philosophy, and the Olympic Games, Athens sure has a long list of accolades. When you factor in the Acropolis, crowned by the majestic Parthenon, the ancient Agora and the Temple of Olympian Zeus, it’s safe to say that Athens has a lot to offer in terms of history, culture, and touristic attractions. However, this can be both a blessing and a curse, and if you visit Athens during the summer months, you may find it buckling from the effects of overtourism .
In May 2023 (which was when I initially visited), more than 14,000 people visited the Acropolis every single day , a 70% increase on 2022 numbers. In that same month, the average hotel occupancy was 88.5%, and let’s remember that this is in May , which brings in far less tourism than the months of July and August.
What is Athens like in December?
As I strolled around the touristic neighbourhoods of Plaka and Monastiraki, I encountered only a handful of other tourists, and even then, this was only when I ventured into souvenir shops or touristy restaurants. As well as the crowds being noticeably thinner, many things were cheaper (souvenirs, museum tickets etc.), and while it was certainly a little chilly, the sun shined every day during my visit.
It was brilliant. Winter in Athens allowed me to feel as though I was experiencing Athens through an Athenian perspective rather than being trapped in a tourist bubble, and that authenticity can be hard to find at busier times of the year. The best bit? There are some super affordable flights to Athens with Jet2 !
Weather in Athens in December
Is Athens cold in December? Well, yes and no. Athens weather in December certainly isn’t tanning weather, but Athens enjoys a much milder climate in December than much of Europe. The average temperature in Athens in December is between 9°C and 15°C (48°F – 59°F), with the sun often breaking through the clouds making it feel even warmer.
Early mornings and evenings are the coldest times, and there are around 11 days of rain in Athens in December (usually in the form of scattered showers). Snow is rare, but it can happen. Restaurants always have the heating cranked up inside, as well as using outdoor heaters – you will still see people sitting outside to eat their evening meal, although they’ll usually have their coats on!
What to wear in Athens in December
While the temperatures outside will be crisp, indoor venues will always be heated, and so the key to dressing for the weather in Athens in December is layering . Generally, a t-shirt with a cardigan/jumper over the top, followed by your coat, will be enough to keep you warm. On my lower half, I wore skirts with boots and tights, and never felt cold, although long trousers would be a good choice as well. You won’t need a hat, scarf, and gloves.
Things to do in Athens in December
While the main Athens attractions remain the same throughout the year, there are definitely activities that are better suited to the cooler months (I won’t be suggesting a trip to the Athenian Riviera in this post!), which I have rounded up for you below. If you are only visiting Athens for a day or two, you might want to check out my article about how to spend one day in Athens , where I cover the absolute must-sees . However, if you’re wondering what to do in Athens in December, here are my best recommendations.
Explore the Acropolis without the crowds
As long as it isn’t raining (the area around the Acropolis gets very slippery when wet), December is one of the best times to visit the Acropolis. First, you won’t have to battle through the cruise ship crowds, or arrive at the crack of dawn to try and beat them. Second, entrance to the Acropolis in low season is cheaper – much cheaper, in fact!
Between November 1 and March 30, tickets for the Acropolis are just 10 EUR, less than half of what they’ll cost you in the busier months (22 EUR)! Not only that, but you’ll have a much more comfortable experience visiting in the cooler temperatures than you would in the oppressive summer heat. Get your Acropolis tickets here , or alternatively, pay a little bit extra and enjoy a guided tour of the Acropolis and Parthenon . You can also buy a combined ticket and enjoy access to the Acropolis and six other famous archaeological sites in Athens.
Enjoy discounted museum tickets
It isn’t just the Acropolis that is cheaper to visit in the off season – many of Athens’ best museums are also cheaper to visit! Visiting a museum is one of the best things to do in Athens when it rains, or when the weather is a bit chillier.
The best museums in Athens include: Museum of Cycladic Art – Discover an extensive collection of art and artifacts from the ancient cultures of the Aegean and Cyprus. National Archaeological Museum – The largest archaeological museum in Greece and one of the most important museums in the world devoted to ancient Greek art. Museum of Illusions – Discover 60 visual and interactive illusions including the infinity room, inverted room, chair illusion, holograms, and many more. Acropolis Museum – World-famous for its stunning ancient Greek statues (including the celebrated Acropolis Caryatids), and the Parthenon Marbles.
Souvenir shopping in Plaka
Plaka is the oldest part of Athens, as well as one of the most touristy areas, but in December, the streets will be lovely and quiet. Plaka has been inhabited since Ancient Greek times, and its picturesque cobbled streets, neoclassical architecture, and friendly street cats make it the perfect place to spend an afternoon. Plaka is a great place to go souvenir shopping, and here you’ll find a multitude of boutiques selling olive oil cosmetics, leather sandals, evil eye talismans, spice mixes, and much more.
The best bit? You’ll find that things are cheaper at this time of year – a tzatziki mix I paid 2.50 EUR for in May was just 1.50 EUR in December! Christmas shopping anyone?
The most Christmassy café in Athens
Little Kook is one of the most famous dessert shops in Athens, and as soon as you see it, you’ll understand why. This incredibly OTT place completely redecorates three times a year (Halloween, Christmas, and spring), and trust me when I say that they really go all out! When I visited Athens in May, Little Kook had an Alice in Kookland theme, but of course, in December, it was Christmas-themed.
With a festive menu (ever wanted to eat Ferrero mousse out of Santa’s boot or wondered what Prancer’s salted caramel hot chocolate tastes like?), servers dressed as elves, and the best décor in town, you can’t visit Athens and not visit Little Kook. Good to know: Little Kook isn’t cheap. A cake will set you back about 12 EUR, and even a coffee costs around 5 EUR. IMO, it’s worth it because you’re paying for the experience.
Enjoy hearty winter food
You may associate Greece with warm weather foods like grilled fish and crunchy salads, but if you visit Greece in winter, you’ll find a whole host of hearty comfort foods waiting for you. The best Greek foods to eat in winter include: Moussaka – A layered aubergine (eggplant) casserole made with a tomato meat sauce, topped with béchamel and seasoned with cinnamon, nutmeg, paprika, and oregano. Saganaki – A thick slab of cheese, tossed in flour and fried. The end result is crispy on the outside, and melty on the inside. Pastitsio – A baked pasta dish with layered pasta and ground beef seasoned with cinnamon and cloves, held together in a tomato sauce, and topped with a generous portion of béchamel sauce. Yogurtlu – Toasted pita bread, topped with grilled lamb kofta, a big dollop of Greek yogurt, and a sprinkling of paprika. This is technically a Turkish dish, but is still very popular in Greece.
Ancient ruins
As I mentioned earlier, visiting Athens in low season means that you’ll be able to experience all of the main tourist attractions relatively undisturbed. The Roman Agora, Temple of Hephaestus, Hadrian’s Library, and the Temple of Olympian Zeus are some of the most popular ruins in Athens, but you’ll find ruins around every corner in this city. Get your combined ticket to 7 of Athens’ most famous ruins here.
Embrace Greek coffee culture
Athens has a really strong café culture, and it’s not unusual for Greeks to make their freddo espresso or Greek coffee (like Turkish coffee) last for hours as they watch the world go by and enjoy the local ambience. Greek coffee culture is similar to Albanian coffee culture in this way, and one of the best things to do in Athens if you want to live like a local is to spend as much time as you can discovering the hundreds of coffee shops in Athens. Even if the weather is cool, most coffee shops have outdoor heaters, and it’s common for people to sit outside in their winter woollies drinking coffee!
Drink Rakomelo
Rakomelo is a strong alcoholic drink that is perfect for wintertime. Made from raki , honey, cinnamon, and cloves, rakomelo is served hot (just like mulled wine). However, while mulled wine is often around 5% proof, rakomelo is around 40%, so don’t drink it too quickly!
Enjoy a hammam or massage
Athens is home to many hammams and spas, and one of the best things to do in Athens in winter is to indulge in one of the many wellness treatments on offer. From olive soap massages to chocolate body wraps, and body scrubs with gold flakes, self-care is easy in Athens. I had an incredible Thai massage at Salon de Massage (and I lived in Asia, so I know what I’m talking about!), which was also much cheaper than other spas and hammams in Athens.
Experience Athenian fine dining
As well as plenty of cosy tavernas, Athens has an incredible fine dining scene, with many Michelin Star restaurants, degustation menus, and fantastic local and international chefs. I enjoyed a 7-course degustation menu at Merceri (which doesn’t have a Michelin Star, but is featured on the Michelin guide to Athens), and it was absolutely delectable.
From John Dory ceviche to parsnip velouté soup with lobster, trout eggs, and truffle butter, each course was exquisite, and the friendly staff made the experience even better. The degustation menu I ordered was 65 EUR, and you can add a Greek wine pairing for 35 EUR, although I preferred to choose my wine from the menu. For more information, head to their website .
Cosy up in a rooftop bar
Athens is home to countless rooftop bars, all of which boast stunning views of the Acropolis. Some of the most popular Athens rooftop bars are Thea Terrace (I visited Thea Terrace and really liked it) and A for Athens , but I also loved the rooftop bar at my hotel, Electra Roof Garden . Cosy mood lighting, comfortable chairs, and a sophisticated atmosphere make this the perfect place to unwind at the end of the night, and their drinks menu is impeccable.
When I visited Athens, I would end my night by ordering a glass of wine and reading my book up here. Good to know: All the bars mentioned have large terraces for the summer months, but indoor seating areas for winter that are very warm and don’t ruin the view whatsoever. In my opinion, visiting a rooftop bar is one of the best things to do in Athens in December.
Athens at Christmas
Athens might not have markets to rival the German Christmas Markets , but it isn’t without its festive cheer. Head to Syntagma Square to admire the large (19 metre!) Christmas tree and simple Christmas market. You’ll also find live carol singing (especially on Christmas Eve) and musical performances in the evening.
In terms of Greek Christmas food, two traditional Christmas biscuits that you can try are sugar-dusted kourabiedes and honey-soaked melamakarona . You can also try a vasilopita , a cake dedicated to Saint Basil (the Greek version of Santa Claus), which is traditionally cut on New Year’s Eve. You can buy this cake at pretty much every bakery in Athens in December. Lastly, be sure to sample some of the festive tasting menus at hotel restaurants. Many luxury hotels in Athens will offer traditional Christmas dinners on Christmas Day (if you book in advance).
Tips for visiting Athens in December
- Almost all major attractions in Athens offer free entry to visitors on the first Sunday of December, so plan your trip around then if you can!
- Make the most of cold days by visiting museums and café-hopping.
- Wear shoes with good grip when visiting the Acropolis as the area is extremely slippery when it rains.
- Make sure to check the visiting times for tourist attractions as they vary during summer and winter months. Many museums and attractions are closed on the 25th and 26th of December.
Where to stay in Athens in winter
So, you want to visit Athens in December. Great! Now you need to find somewhere to stay. Winter city breaks require cosy and comfortable accommodation, and you also want to be close enough to the action that you’re not walking for miles in the cold.
I stayed at the 5-star Electra Palace Athens hotel in Plaka, and while my room was on the small side, I’d still recommend this hotel (although I’d probably go for a double room rather than a single one next time). The location was great for exploring, the rooftop bar was wonderful (and super cosy at night!), the breakfast was to die for, and the staff were great as well. My favourite thing about this hotel was the fact that the rooftop bar and restaurant boasted stunning views of the Acropolis, making breakfast (smoked salmon and scrambled eggs) taste even better.
Is Athens safe?
One of the most common questions I get asked about Athens is whether or not Athens is safe . Some tourists, especially solo female travellers, say that they felt unsafe in Athens, and while I’m never going to discount somebody’s experiences, what I will say is that the numbers show that Athens is a very safe city, and I prefer to go by the numbers rather than people’s self-reported feelings.
On the whole, Athens is a very safe city (you can read my post about safety in Athens for more detailed information). Athens in December is especially safe because there are far fewer tourists, meaning fewer pickpockets. It’s also much easier for pickpockets to operate when it’s very crowded, and Athens in December is not crowded.
In terms of areas to avoid, Omonia has a bad reputation, and can feel a little sketchy. I would advise against walking around Omonia at night, especially if you’re a single female. If you do have to walk through Omonia at night, stick to the the main streets and avoid the narrow alleys that intersect through the main roads.
There is a lot of poverty in Omonia, and although you will often find cheap guesthouses there, it’s probably better paying a couple of extra bucks to stay in a more touristy part of town, especially as hotel rates in December will be much less than in the summer. Other areas to avoid in Athens are Vathi Square and Viktoria Square, but they are not in the centre of town and therefore not places you would accidentally stumble upon.
Exarchia – A word of caution
Exarchia is one of my favourite neighbourhoods in Athens, known for its alternative vibes, record stores, street art, and anti-establishment crowd. However, if you’re visiting Athens in December, you should avoid Exarchia on December 6. December 6 is the day that a 15-year-old Greek student named Alexandros Grigoropoulos was shot and killed by a police officer in Exarchia. This tragic murder of an innocent child sparked uproar and led to what have become known as the 2008 Greek Riots , and each year, on December 6, there are vigils for him in Exarchia, which can sometimes lead to violent clashes between attendees and the police.

Most of Greece's highlights have mild or cool weather in December. The weather in the south is usually suitable for hiking and touring the historical places and urban areas, but moderate rain falls half the days.
Read on for our weather information and travel advice including average temperatures, humidity, and rainfall, places to go, and travel tips…
Suggested reading: Best and Worst Times to Visit Greece >>>
- Temperature range: 10–15°C (49–59°F)
- Rainfall: 10 cm (4 inches)
- Rainy days: 15
- Humidity: 73% (The high humidity makes it a little muggy.)
- Sea temperature: 18°C (64°F) (too cold for swimming for most people)
- Sunshine hours/day: 4 hours
December Climate Comparison (Averages) for Greece's Top Tourism Areas
Greece is at a middle latitude, so in December, it gets about 9½ hours of daylight, but it is so overcast that there are only about 4 hours of sunshine a day on average. Greece has mild weather with low rainfall though, except in northern Greece, the eastern coastal islands, and places with high mountains.
Northern Greece: The continental weather from Europe is cooler, rainier, and stormier. It snows in the higher elevations, and ski resorts operate in forested areas.
Southern Greece: The eastern islands of Greece are cooler than the mainland, and Crete is warmer. Generally, there is suitable weather for touring the ancient places and hiking. There is rainfall at least 15 days each month, but the rains are usually short.
The Best Places to Visit in Greece in December
For December, unless you want to ski, we recommend going to the warmer places in Greece with great historical sites and museums such as Athens where you will be able to spend time strolling and relaxing and enjoying the festive celebrations with lower prices and less crowding.
1. Athens — Tour the Archeological and Historical Highlights, Museums, City Streets, and Parks
Though there is some rainfall about half the days of December, Athens usually has suitable weather for walking and touring. The restaurants and cafés are kept at invitingly warm temperatures where you can warm up, and when there is sunshine, there is pleasant weather for excursions. The average high is 14ºC (57ºF).
By the 10th of December, the Athenians light up their city. They decorate grandly and colorfully for the Christmas holidays. There are daily public concerts at Syntagma Square close to the Acropolis and the Agora.
Mount Lycabettus is downtown. You could walk up for some exercise and the best scenic vantage point in Athens. The museums and the Acropolis have shorter hours and may close by 5 pm or earlier.
2. Crete — Hike and Enjoy the Fresh Green Beauty in December
Crete is recommended since it stays warmer than the rest of Greece in December since it is the southernmost part of Greece and the largest island of Greece, bigger than the state of Delaware. It has diverse places of interest suited for the mild temperatures.
The temperatures range from 17°C (63°F) to 11°C (52°F) at night. The sea temperature averages 18°C (64°F) which is too cold for swimming, but doable with a wetsuit for watersports.
There are many Christmas festivities including Christmas music, and in the smaller villages there are more traditional Orthodox traditions. Eating all the wonderful traditional holiday foods is one of the highlights. Room rates may be 50% of the summer rates. Many businesses and most resorts close.
3. Kefalonia — Enjoy a Family Vacation
Kefalonia is suggested for family vacations since there are so many things for families to do together. It is the biggest of the Ionian Islands on the western side of Greece. Average highs are 16°C (61°F), and the lows are 10°C (50°F).
There are castles, monasteries, and an underground lake. There is also a national park with a mountain that is 1,628 m (5,341 feet) tall. Flights are the best way to travel there, which from Athens take an hour.
4. Parnassos — Ski during the Holidays
If you want have a white Christmas, and also have a chance to ski if the conditions are right, you could go to Parnassos. It is the largest and best equipped ski resort in Greece with 13 lifts, three runs for beginners, seven ski routes, and ten trails.
The ski resort has good slopes for beginners and intermediate skiers and is also popular since there are good restaurants and cafés in the area. It is only a 2½ hours' drive from Athens, so could be a place to go for a day excursion.
Highlights nearby: Delphi is a famous archeological site about 75 minutes away. For coastal scenery and fine Greek-style seafood, Galaxdi is a fishing village and is less than two hours away.
5. Rhodes — Enjoy Warmer Weather, See the Ancient Places, and Hike in Nature
In December, the famous travel destination of Rhodes is also one of the warmest highlights of Greece since it is one of the southernmost big islands. Daily temperatures range from about 16°C (61°F) to lows of 12°C (53°F).
The island is one of the few places where you could still enjoy the beach and watersports without being too chilled. There are very good beaches.
In 2023, fires burned some of the southern resort areas, but the northern shore was unaffected. The historical highlights were not affected such as the Acropolis of Lindos, the Old Town that preserves medieval architecture, and the Gothic castle of the Knights of Rhodes. Flights from Athens take an hour.
Low Tourism Season: Touring Advice for January
Greece seems more tranquil, peaceful, and dreamy in winter, and the excitement of winter adds some spicy excitement. So, it is a good time to relax and enjoy the excellent Greek food and experience the unique culture.
As you tour, you will have more time to contemplate history and life in general. You will also have more time to eat. The Greeks are experts at mixing natural spices in their traditional Christmas cakes, pastries, and healthy beverages. There are bargain prices for hotels and flights.
Closures: Some popular Greek islands are virtually closed down during winter. Many hotels and restaurants close for their winter vacations.
Shorter hours: The archaeological sites have shorter hours in January than in the summer. Most major sites such as the Parthenon close at 3 pm since there is less daylight, and minor sites might not open. Many museums close earlier too, even by 3:30 p.m.
Public holidays in December:
Christmas — December 25 and 26 each year are Greece's Christmas public holiday that celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. Museums, archeological places, businesses, public buildings, and even some transportation services are closed. It is considered a very important holiday. On the 24th, children sing Christmas carols in the streets.
December 31, New Year's Eve , is not a national public holiday. Athens and many other places have midnight fireworks. Greeks give gifts, reunite with family and friends, party, enjoy games and prepare the Feast of Saint Basil's that is a major Orthodox holiday on January 1.
Low Tourism Season: Touring Advice for December
Tourism is low, and the prices for hotel rooms decline to as much as 50% of the peak prices of July and August. The exception is during the Christmas – New Year period. So, you might plan on extended stays while the weather is mild and dine on Greece's more natural, healthier and tastier cuisine with lots of seafood dishes in December.
What to Wear in December
You will need a coat or thick jacket for comfort, and if you are planning to go to the mountains or to the north of Greece, take winter (or skiing) clothing. Since there are rainy days, have an umbrella or poncho handy.
Shoes: Since it is rainier, wear sturdy shoes with good traction for the nature trails, the cobbled stone streets and archeological sites to prevent slips and wet feet.
Wetsuits: The average sea temperature is about 18°C (64°F) at most of Greece's beach highlights in December. This is too cold for swimming for most people without a wetsuit.

Greece In December 2024: December Adventures Await
Yes, the weather can be cold and rainy, but when the sun shines, it’s simply glorious. December is the best month to experience Greece with the Greeks and at its most authentic. This destination is a perfect wintertime venue, especially for nature lovers, skiers, and gourmands.
Weather in Greece in December
Wintry weather sets in, with plenty of rainy and dark grey days. Biting northerly winds sweep the islands. But crisp sunny days can be crystal clear, with bottle-blue skies and delightfully mild temperatures. And the mountains are by now dusted with snow—perfect for skiing. Pack plenty of cold-weather clothing, plus rainwear, as temperatures in Athens reach an average high of 59 Fahrenheit. Northern Greece is significantly colder, requiring gloves and maybe even a woollen hat.
Where to Go In Greece in December
Explore Athens and other key historical venues while you have the Acropolis, museums and archaeological sites virtually to yourself. If you delight in the wild side, which is lush and green in December, explore the gorges and stone villages of Zagori. The snow-capped mountains are gorgeous too, so head to Mt. Parnassos. And Meteora never looked so majestic and mysterious as in winter.
If you want to explore the islands, know that the Aegean can be bitterly cold, and ferry service will be limited. But this is a great time to sample the islands in solitude, and the colours are prime when the sun shines. The Saronic islands are still lively with Athenians taking mini-vacations or making second-home visits. And Crete has heaps of cultural sites, great culinary adventures, and winter activities such as hiking and biking.
What to Do In Greece In December
Even on the sunniest day, it’s hardly likely to be warm enough to enjoy beach time. Instead, take a city break in Athens and ditch the refreshing beer for a warm rakomelo. Christmas week in Athens is fabulously festive! For an active vacation, take a hot-air balloon ride then warm up with mountain biking at Meteora. The ski resorts of Mt. Parnassos should be open for skiing, and if soaking in thermal springs and an indulgent spa treatments appeal, head to Pella in Macedonia.
Events in Greece in December
- Feast of St. Nicholas: On December 6, Greeks head to church for ceremonies and festivals to honour St. Nicholas, patron saint of sailors.
- Kladaries: Each December 23, shepherds are honoured with feasting, plus dancing around bonfires, in the village of Siatista, Macedonia.
- Christmas Day: It is the second most important festival after Easter in the Greek Orthodox calendar, and December 25 is celebrated with church services, street carolling, and family parties; and every town will be festooned with traditional decorations.
- New Year’s Eve: Towns throughout Greece launch fireworks, children carol in the streets, and it’s a reason for parties.
Things to do in Greece in December
Booming athens and sleepy peloponnese.
Athens cafe culture, zippy late-hours and partying nightlife is the best in winter keeping the locals in town and not out on the islands. Athenians in general love ouzo-soaked lunch or a multi-hour chat over coffee as much as they love to do all-night bar crawls and sparkling bouzoukia nightclubs. By day, the visitor can take in a much less impeded Acropolis and other ancient sites, as well as uncrowded world-class museums, such as the Acropolis Museum, National Archaeological Museum, the Benaki Museum and the brand new Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation.
So close to Athens, the Peloponnese is the most accessible. It is a beautiful country with lanes lined by stone walls, olive groves, and ancient sites spanning aeons. You can visit Nafplio, a charming seaside Venetian city topped by a fortress. The city has tiny streets with various creative craft shops, boutique hotels. Visiting this place in December you can visit the Fougaro cultural centre that hosts a winter programme of arts and musical events.
Island hopping – Yes, They Are Open!
Islands in winter are really special so, don’t miss this out from your list! Convivial locals make for interesting, friendly visits. Moody skyscapes and changing light conditions make for dramatic and wonderful walks. Larger islands remain the most vibrant, with their substantial local populations.
Corfu is an old town with a rich cultural life, starting from orchestras to art shows. It has beautiful palaces like the Palace of St Michael & St George. Crete sprawls from quaint, eye-dazzling harbour towns of Hania and Rethymno to its myriad mountain villages. Lesvos (Mytilini) has ouzeries and almost 11 million olive trees where you can watch the harvest. These large islands have some of the best local cuisines in the country, with fresh local produce and creative recipes.
Walking Trails
Larger islands such as Crete, Corfu and Lesvos are blessed with regional walking trails that connect villages to mountain churches and windswept sea coast. There are also smaller islands like Hydra which has no cars at all. Stone stairways radiate out from the beautifully preserved old harbour, and earthen trails wind along the unspoilt, dramatic coast, with views across the Saronic Gulf.
Ancient Sites
Winter is the best time to see Greece’s ancient sites where most are iconic in the world and the major foundations of western civilisation. These sites are deserted in comparison to summer months, the mainland sites range from Athens Acropolis and Ancient Agora to Delphi, Meteora with its pinnacle-topped monasteries; and the awe-inspiring Macedonian tomb treasures of Vergina, outside Thessaloniki. In winter, the Temple of Poseidon on dramatic Cape Sounion actually resembles its photo on local postcards: epic, rising from its deserted seaside bluff.
Crowds & Costs
Most of the visitors don’t visit Greece in December. Their loss but your gain! Greece feels personal without the crowds of summer. Plus, prices of airfares and hotels are at their lowest, with some real bargains. While most tourist restaurants will be closed (especially in the islands), those serving Greek patrons will be open.
Reasons outnumbered for you to kick-start your bookings to the vibrant country. Greece in December is going to be a delightful experience for you filled with adventure, luxury and tasteful experiences. We at Pickyourtrail ensure our best travel experience is put into planning your Greece tour packages with airfare from India or Greece honeymoon packages with lots of excitement. December is a month that’s often associated with winter, snow, and Christmas cheer. But did you know that it’s also a great time to visit the Greek islands? Many of the islands are still open for business in December, offering a unique and quieter experience than the summer months.
While the weather can be cold and rainy at times, there are still plenty of activities to enjoy. While many of the islands are seasonal and may not be as lively in the winter months, there are still some options that offer plenty of things to do and see. Here are three of the best Greek islands to visit in December:
Santorini is a popular tourist destination in the summer months, but it’s also a great place to visit in the winter. The island is less crowded, and you can still enjoy the stunning views and beautiful sunsets that Santorini is known for. Crete is the largest of the Greek islands and offers a wide range of activities and attractions. In December, you can explore the island’s ancient ruins, visit museums and art galleries, and enjoy the local cuisine. The weather may be a bit cooler, but it’s still mild enough to enjoy outdoor activities like hiking and cycling. Plus, the island’s beaches are less crowded and offer a peaceful retreat.
Rhodes is another great option for a winter getaway. The island is home to a number of historic sites and attractions, including the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes and the Acropolis of Lindos. You can also enjoy the island’s natural beauty by hiking in the mountains or visiting the Valley of the Butterflies. And if you’re looking for some nightlife, the town of Rhodes has plenty of bars and clubs that are open year-round.
In conclusion, if you’re looking for a winter escape to Greece, these three islands are definitely worth considering. While the weather may be cooler and some of the tourist attractions may be closed, there are still plenty of things to do and see. Plus, you’ll get to experience the islands without the crowds of the summer months.

If you’re planning on visiting the Greek Islands in December, it’s important to pack appropriately for the weather. Be sure to bring warm clothes, including a jacket, scarf, and gloves, as well as waterproof shoes or boots. It’s also a good idea to bring an umbrella or raincoat, just in case.
Despite the possibility of rain, December is a great time to explore the Greek Islands. The crowds are smaller, and you’ll have the opportunity to experience the islands alongside the Greeks, making it an authentic and unforgettable experience.

Greece launches ‘free’ holidays for tourists who fled 2023 Rhodes wildfires
Up to 25,000 holidaymakers, mainly from Britain, in line for vouchers to cover a week’s hotel stay
It has required new legislation and navigation of copious red tape but nine months after wildfires devastated Rhodes , Greece has launched the first “free” holidays for thousands of tourists forced to flee the island.
In a decision tourism officials call a world first, up to 25,000 affected holidaymakers will, as of this week, be eligible for compensation.
“The scheme is up and running as the prime minister promised,” the Greek tourism ministry’s general secretary, Myron Flouris, told the Guardian. “It’s been a very complicated process not least, I think, because we’re the first country in the world to do this.”
Under the programme , people who stayed in hotels that were evacuated because of the July fires will be able to redeem e-vouchers worth up to €500 to cover the accommodation charges of a week-long stay. The initiative will be run in two phases: between now and 31 May and 1 October to 15 November.
Take-up has already been strong, tourism officials in Rhodes say, with more than 5,000 holidaymakers enrolling on the scheme’s register of beneficiaries. “Anyone who was staying in areas that were affected by the fires is eligible,” said Yannis Papavasiliou, who heads the island’s union of hoteliers. “The response has been very good and we are told will be even stronger come the autumn.”
He said compensation would reflect the amount clients originally paid to tour operators and would range from €300 to €500. “It will apply only to hotels, not Airbnb-style private accommodation. At the end of the day Greece is making good on its promise to recompense all those who lost their holidays because of climate change.”
The country’s centre-right government, led by Kyriakos Mitsotakis, announced the initiative on ITV’s Good Morning Britain within days of thousands of stranded holidaymakers being forced to cut short their trips as the wildfires raged.
Most of those put on repatriation flights were Britons.
Visiting the island on Monday, Mitsotakis, who ordered the mass evacuation as a preventive measure, said wildfires would inevitably increase as a result of the climate emergency. “All of the Mediterranean is a hotspot for climate change. That, statistically, means we will have more fires and probably more floods,” he told a conference organised in Rhodes by the European Travel Commission under the fitting title: EU Tourism: Resilience in the Era of the Climate Crisis.
What mattered most was human life, the Greek leader said. “It wasn’t easy … to evacuate 25,000 visitors but we did it safely and we are very proud of the fact that we managed to confront this crisis essentially without mourning [the loss] of human life.”
One UK holidaymaker planning to take up the offer is Sara van Oostrum, a business owner from Hampshire, and her partner, though she said her daughter would not be joining as she felt traumatised by the experience. “We thought at the time our daughter was dealing really well, but on reflection children are funny things, they’re like sponges and take in everything and it doesn’t come out till afterwards – she doesn’t want to return,” she said.
Last August, the family were evacuated from a smoke-filled hotel in which they were handed masks and wet towels to prevent inhalation, before walking for four hours in 34C heat to another hotel, from which they were also evacuated as it became surrounded by flames. They spent the night sleeping on a floor, and the following day learned that they had to wait three days for a repatriation flight.
Since the Greek government announced the initiative last year, Van Oostrum has been messaging her tour operator, Tui, and was only recently able to get further information about the voucher. She is confused by the terms of the offer, including which hotels will be available, whether she will receive a free trip or a discount, and whether it covers children.
She said the couple had “mixed feelings” about whether to return to the hotel and beach they stayed at. “We’d probably prefer to stay elsewhere on the island to move on from the whole experience,” she said, adding: “They want to encourage people back, which is nice. We’ll take up the offer, and we’ll spend money on the island.”
Although many UK holidaymakers visit Rhodes with tour operators, including Jet2, TUI and Thomas Cook, they are expected to liaise directly with the Greek government to obtain their vouchers. TUI said its customers should individually contact the Greek government online, while Thomas Cook said the process was managed by the Greek tourist board, Rhodes authorities and participating hoteliers, rather than its team.
