varden horse riding safaris

Join James and Janine Varden for a fascinating horse safari in Zimbabwe's Hwange National Park. The start and end point is the luxurious Iganyana Tented Camp, situated on the Dete Vlei, which forms part of the buffer zone to the park. This is owned by Sheona and Terry Anders who are also horse lovers. From here the Vardens can offer you an exciting adventure into Hwange, home to more than 100 species of mammals and more than 400 species of birds. In particular it is known for having one of Africa's largest elephant populations, estimated to number over 40,000.

This is an owner-operated safari with James and Janine involved in every trip. Their team of seasoned safari horses are well-schooled and equipped with quality tack to suit your preferences, allowing for a comfortable but exhilarating ride as you explore the wilderness, observing game in an area not currently operated on by any other safari companies. A Professional Guide since 1993, James Varden is renowned for his incredible knowledge of southern Africa and its wildlife, whilst also having a particular love of birds. The Vardens are also known for their conservation ethos and this is reflected in their safaris - they employ local staff, source local produce and keep a low environmental footprint. The fresh food they serve is found nearby.

Terry Anders is also a licensed Professional Guide and former competitive polo player, enabling him to lead rides as well as James.

Rides operate from April until December. From December there is a strong chance of rain and riding is according to weather conditions, with no riding possible from mid January until the end of March. During November it can be very hot and so you will be expected to rise very early so that your rides can be completed before it becomes too hot.

Transfers are available from and to Victoria Falls from where it's a two and a half hour drive to Hwange park, ready to begin your adventure! There are many great add-ons possible in this region too, including a visit to world-famous Falls or perhaps a walking, canoe or jeep safari with a chance to see more wildlife up close - please contact us for suggestions.

Food & Accommodation

During this safari you will be served fresh, farm-style meals using produce which has primarily been locally-sourced. Lunches may be a hearty cooked brunch in camp or potentially eaten out in the bush.

Drinks are included and are standard local Zimbabwean beverages (both alcoholic and soft drinks). Should you request specific premium or imported drinks then these will be charged as an extra cost. Strong French press coffee is available.

Restricted diets such as vegetarian, vegan, gluten/lactose intolerant etc. can all be catered for with prior notice - this is essential to notify us months in advance. It's important to note that whilst it is easy to prepare meals without certain foods, Zimbabwe does not have the specialist food options available in more developed countries. Therefore we cannot guarantee the availability of specific food items or equivalents.

Water is borehole water which is filtered and very clean and safe to drink.

Accommodation

On the first and last nights you are accommodated at Iganyana Tented Camp. This luxury camp offers purpose-built tented rooms, all of which have en-suite facilities and verandas. The tents are made of steel-frames with double layers of canvas and are furnished to a high standard. The bathrooms have flushing toilets and solar-heated showers. There is a full-size swimming pool.

When on the riding safari in Hwange National Park guests are accommodated in traditional safari-style tented camps which are semi-mobile. The tents are mini walk-in Meru style tents with private long-drop loos and hot bucket showers. You will have proper beds with good linen and everything you need for a peaceful sleep.

Laundry is available both at Iganyana and when in the bush. Electricity is available at Iganyana but not in the mobile camps - gadgets and cameras can be charged in the vehicle with the right plugs. There is also limited WiFi at Iganyana but none at all when in the park and no mobile phone service either.

The closest airport is Victoria Falls, with a 2.5 - 3 hour transfer time.

You normally leave camp at 09:30am to arrive at the airport 12:30 midday. Your flight should therefore depart 14:30 or later.

Earlier transfers are possible, but will incur an additional cost because the driver will have to arrive the night before and overnight in camp to facilitate an earlier departure.

Outstanding in every way. Favourite memory? Being in the presence of 150+ elephants. Accommodation and food? Both excellent and exceeded expectations. Horses? Fit, well cared for and healthy horses that knew their job. Tack excellent. Guide? Above and beyond excellent.

Hwange National Park Ride

At a glance.

This new ride is set within Hwange national park, deep in the Kalahari. The terrain is perfect for the barefoot horses and the landscape is predominantly flat with no mountains or kopjes in sight, making for excellent riding and unimpeded views. Numerous animals roam the wonderful woodlands and grasslands near the pans, particularly elephant and giraffe. You should also see zebra, impala, kudu, warthog, eland, buffalo etc, and if you are lucky lion, cheetah, leopard and wild dog.

Itinerary & Pricing

Day 1 - arrival.

Riding: 1 - 2 hours

You will be transferred from Victoria Falls International Airport to Iganyana Tented Camp where you will spend the first night. This is a two to three hour drive and the 'meet and greet' and transfer is carried out by a road transfer company.

Afternoon high tea is served, followed by a briefing from your guide, an indemnity signing and introduction to the horses. You'll mount up for a short introductory ride before heading back to camp for sundowners, showers, dinner and a peaceful sleep under canvas.

Riding: 4 - 6 hours

An early start with tea, coffee and a light breakfast before mounting up. Today you'll explore the Dete Vlei and surrounds on horseback, allowing more time to adapt to the local riding style, tack and horses - any changes can easily be made today. You may ride for the whole day, or may ride 3-4 hours in the morning and then head out for a shorter ride in the afternoon - everything will depend on local game movements and conditions.

Return to Iganyana for a second night in this lovely camp.

Riding: 3 - 5 hours

Early this morning the horses and equipment will be transported by truck into Main Camp in Hwange National Park. You will have an early morning wake up with tea and coffee around the campfire, then you'll pack your bags, have breakfast and head off in the horses' footsteps. The drive is only around half an hour to an hour, depending on what sightings you have along the way!

You'll check in at the tourism office and make your conservation and camping fee payments, then you'll be back on your horse for a ride into the park. Sometimes you'll game drive deeper into the park before meeting your horse and riding to the first campsite.

Overnight at camp with sundowners, hot showers and dining under the stars

Today is another early start, although your wake-up time varies according to the seasons. Mid-year is very cold first thing in the morning and so you'll start a bit later, around 07:00, whereas the peak heat of October, November and December requires a 05:00 start.

There are no set routes to your rides and each day depends on what was heard during the night, what animal tracks your guide has found and what the weather conditions are like, as well as many other factors. It may be a half day or a full day ride with a picnic lunch near a waterhole for wildlife viewing. If lunch is at camp then the afternoon can be a bush walk or game drive. There are other waterholes which are recommended for a visit if guests are interested in birding or photography.

Sometimes your guide may decide that an early morning walk or drive is going to be better and may then switch the day around so that the morning is non-riding and the afternoon is a ride instead. Sometimes the horses need to rest before a long day the following day and that is also factored in.

Whatever happens you'll enjoy an exciting day on safari followed by cold drinks around the campfire and a delicious dinner.

Today you ride from Camp Baikiaea for a full day out to Kennedy Camp. This is a ride of around 30-40km through Zambezi teak and acacia woodlands and by waterholes (which may be dry!), stopping for a picnic lunch en-route.

In the afternoon you'll arrive to Camp Kennedy and settle in for sundowners and hot showers before dinner.

Today is spent in the Kennedy 2 area of the park, exploring some beautiful Acacia groves. The camp is located along the Kennedy Vlei which is a renowned area for wildlife viewing. Morning activities could be riding, walking or a safari drive, depending on the wildlife sightings and activity and the time of year.

A good option is to take a game drive to the Ngweshla area which isn't far, as this is usually very active for wildlife and often has a resident pride of lions.

Final early morning wake-up to enjoy the dawn in the African bush around the fire. After a light breakfast you'll be back onto the horses for a ride between 14 - 25km, depending on wildlife activity, to a point where the horse truck will meet you. This is the end of the ride and the horses will be loaded up. You'll enjoy a game drive out of the park and back to Iganyana for the night

Sundowners tonight are a special affair, reminiscing on the past few days of being in the real African bush on fine mounts, enjoying the amazing wildlife and open spaces.

Riding: No riding.

Depending on departure times, there may be time for a short walk to stretch the legs before a sumptuous final breakfast. Then it's time for transfer back to Victoria Falls airport or wherever you are headed. Sad farewells to the camp but knowing that a return to Hwange is definite!

Horse riding in the mavuradonha with varden safaris.

The Mavuradonha wilderness area is still one of the wild places of Zimbabwe and riding on horseback must be one of the best ways of exploring it in the care of licensed guides and keen staff.

Varden Safaris have been included in the independently audited Green Safari Guide – Africa’s Finest. As only 1 of only 2 camps listed in Zimbabwe and 1 of 50 camps in Africa, this is a great achievement for them.

Like many wildlife enthusiasts’ both management and staff are passionate about conservation and are helping to conserve the African Wild Cat, Serval, Civet, Pangolin, Aardwolf, Southern African Hedgehog, and Genet.

www.vardensafaris.com

The horse riding safaris take place about 180 kilometres north of Harare in a very remote area of the Mavuradonha Mountains.

Days 1 and 5 are spent at Kopje Tops Lodge, which has a striking stone and thatch dining area that commands views over the surrounding plains and trees and six widely spread chalets that can accommodate up to 12 guests.

varden horse riding safaris

Day 2 starts before dawn at the campfire with a mug of fresh brewed coffee / tea and muffins and then a ride to Bat Caves Camp through the Great Dyke. The horse ride is slow but technical, negotiating rough and rocky terrain in search of elephant, buffalo, eland, sable, kudu, zebra and many other species. A packed lunch is enjoyed on the Tingwa River with Bat Cave Camp being reached in the afternoon. A hot bucket shower and drinks by the campfire followed by a wholesome, freshly prepared dinner will relax you before bed in a comfortable walk-in tent. In the dusk guests will see 20,000 giant Egyptian fruit bats as they fly out into the neighbouring woodlands.

Days 3 and 4 are spent exploring the Mavuradonha on horseback from Bat Cave Camp and the horse rides are determined by riders abilities and interests of the group – there is no fixed itinerary and activities may include an early morning walk to the caves to see the large colony of Egyptian fruit bats, or a short climb onto Bat Cave rock for stunning views of the Tingwa River Valley, or some birding around camp.

Day 5 is a return horse ride to Kopje Tops Lodge although there is no set trail back but will depend on what wildlife is encountered within the 600sq km of deep river valleys bisected by towering rock faces and mountains covered in woodlands.

Day 6 is a horse ride to the village where most of the staff are living and a visit to a community project called Honey for Money where you can see bee hives and buy delicious honey direct from the bee-keepers. After brunch guests are returned to Harare.

riding with elephants

The horses are crosses between thoroughbreds and track horses and have been trained in the classic English way of riding. When you encounter large animals whilst riding; stay calm, move behind your guide and follow instructions. The guides carry a satellite phone in case of emergencies. It is vital that riders have full medical and emergency evacuation insurance. Saddles are Australian stock saddles and South African trail masters and most horses ride in a snaffle bit. The tack is made from good quality English leather and synthetic GP.

Amazing introduction to riding safaris

I was privileged to ride with James at Iganyana this August. What an experience! He is a fantastic guide and he and Janine were amazing hosts for the 5 days. We saw lions, elephants, impala, zebra and hung out right next to a herd of wild buffalo on our entirely unperturbed horses. Strongly recommend riding safaris to anyone comfortable on a horse, you won’t regret it!

An unforgettable and absolutely wonderful experience. I cannot thank the team at Ride Zimbabwe enough for taking great care of me throughout the entire trip; from ensuring my transfers and covid tests were arranged to providing educational and insightful outings and activities. I was part of the Guestateer program which not only meant that I went on safari rides but I also had the opportunity to learn about the conservation projects, communities and wildlife in the area. I left feeling like a part of the family and with the utmost respect and love for the region and the people. All the horses are very well cared for and their own unique personalities really shine through. We had close encounters with all kinds of game and the horses were completely un-phased. Very impressive! One of my favourite bushveld trips so far, thank you.

I was well greeted and looked after once I arrived and got to meet JANINE, JAMES and the Ride Zimbabwe team. The horses were all well trained and in best conditions with staff that looks perfectly after them. The safari time was unforgettable no matter if it was in Cawston Wildlife Estate with its graceful giraffes encounters or Matobo National Park with the spectacular rhino tracking or Hwange with its adrenaline guaranteed wildlife sightings from the back of the lovely horses. JAMES knows all reserves very well and has exceptional knowledge when it comes to animals and their trackings. Even if the country itself might experience some troublesome time, this is a safe adventure and I will definitely return! Thanks a lot JANINE and JAMES for some breathtaking memories I will also cherish and carry in my heart.

varden horse riding safaris

We have just returned from an incredible five days riding safari with the Vardens in Metopes. Such a special experience in one of the most beautiful areas of the world. James truly is the most fantastic guide, there is nothing he doesn't know about the bush, from trees, to birds, to wildlife to stars. The whole team looked after us so well from start to finish, making us feel very safe in Zimbabwe and relaxed out in the bush - we ate like kings for the entire experience and were lucky enough to sleep under the stars for two nights. The horses have to be the happiest horses in all of Zimbabwe and are extremely looked after throughout the whole trip. A fantastic way to escape life's daily stresses and reconnect with nature! Already looking forward to returning hopefully in the not too distant future, thank you James and Janine!

I have dreamed of riding horses in Africa since I was a small child galloping my pony through fields imagining myself in the African bush. Ride Zimbabwe and James and Janine Varden and their staff made those dreams come true and exceeded all expectations! We started our week long adventure with them at Matopos National Park. The camp was set and horses ready to go on our arrival. Tent camping but lots of hot water for showers at this camp. Incredible food. Great care taken to make us welcome and comfortable. And the park is fantastic! Incredible riding, a fantasy land of rock formations, lots of wildlife! We went the last night via land rover up to have our "sundowners" on top of the "World View" heritage site and site of Cecil Rhodes grave. Just spectacular! Next day was transfer to Hwange. We did get to visit Cawston for lunch but didn't ride there. I imagine it is great riding but we were on to Hwange. The Vardens hadn't finalized their Hwange contract when we booked so out itinerary was a little different from what they offer now. But we were so lucky that all was in place and set for Hwange by the time of our trip! More predators here so camp was set inside an electric fence and horses inside a boma within the fence. We saw so much wild life here it was just unbelievable! No easy access to water here but staff made sure hot water was ready for the bucket shower and we had hot water at our tent every morning and night for washing up. They think of everything! Incredible food and amazing company! Could not have been happier. My daughter, who is an excellent rider, had a suitable horse for her level and I, who am competent but 60 years old, had a perfect mount for my tastes. James and Janine know their horses and have such a wide variety of good mounts that everyone seemed pleased at both camps. We left Hwange camp for the fabulous Somalisa Expedition Camp. It is beyond description. Best staff, best guides, most comfortable accomodations...and the wild life is everywhere! Saw a cheetah! Who sees a cheetah their first trip to Africa?! Perfect ending to this incredible experience.

Zimbabweans are a wonderfully charismatic nation – You will be kept smiling throughout your stay thanks to the generous, fun and thoughtful hospitality. Enjoy experiencing local cuisine such as ilambazi (maize porridge) which can be served as a breakfast with milk and sugar before your days exploring the wild on horseback, or as an accompaniment to your main meal with a flavourful spicy tomato relish. Snack on biltong (similar to jerky), and roasted and salted peanuts with your G&T after your afternoon’s riding in the African bush. Later, you will most likely experience a barbeque ‘braaied’ over the campfire, along with traditional stews and grilled vegetables.

ZIMBABWE SAFARI FAQs

Is it safe to travel to zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe for many years has received a bad reputation in the western world, and granted at times it has earned it. However, travelling as a tourist in the country is safe. Any disturbances always happen in the inner city areas (7 hours drive away) where you would not be going. From the minute you land at the airport you have 24-hour support from local and knowledgeable staff. You will be staying out in the bush and wilderness where the crime rate is exceptionally low. Isabel lived there for 3 years and can chat to you firsthand about any concerns.

When is the best time to visit Zimbabwe?

Zimbabwe is a brilliant destination throughout the year. The summer months of October to March can get very hot – Up to 35-40DC in Victoria Falls – So it is best to avoid these months if you are not a heat-lover. The coolest months are June to August – You will need lots of layers for the mornings and evenings of these months.

Can I travel on my own to Zimbabwe?

Yes! 75% of the guests that join our working-holidays are solo-travellers. This is a great option for anyone travelling alone as you will get to know an awesome group of fellow adventurers from all over the world!

Is there the big 5 in Zimbabwe?

Yes – The big 5 are present in Zimbabwe’s National Parks and you have a chance of seeing them on the Zambezi Riding Safari. The big 5 are not all present on the reserve which the volunteer programme is based at, but you have the opportunity to do excursions to go and find them!

What airport do I fly into in Zimbabwe?

For our volunteer programme you can fly into either Harare or Bulawayo Airport – Usually via South Africa. Pick-up and drop-off from both is included in the trip cost. For trips to the Zambezi, you will fly into Victoria Falls Airport.

RECENT ZIMBABWE REVIEWS

“ Loads of memories that will last a lifetime! I've just arrived home after spending 2 magical weeks in Zimbabwe on a working holiday in Antelope Park. Words can't express how amazing it was, there was so much to do, so much to see and now there is so much to miss! I absolutely adored the team, everyone was super kind and lovely! The projects are fantastic, had loads of opportunities to ride horses, spend time up-close with wildlife and enjoy all the wonders that Africa has to offer! Loads of memories that will last for a lifetime! Thank you African Horse Safaris! ” Rebeka Schmidt Zimbabwe Working Holiday - Zimbabwe
“ The riding experience on this trip was unmatched. Allison was an expert at navigating us through the dense bush and dynamic landscape. She used her expertise in anti-poaching to safely get us extremely close (8-10 meters at times) to wild animals, even ones who had never seen a horse before. The riding was fast-paced and ever changing. Always something to see or somewhere to go. She had great knowledge of the landscape and would change our rides up if we weren’t seeing animals. Allison was very open that she wanted to make the most of every second of my trip - I really appreciated this, as it is quite expensive to do horse safaris. We were up before the sun and would ride until after it set. She always let me know if I wanted to ride faster or slower, or ride at a different location; all I had to do was ask. She would also consistently get off her horse to show me tracks, marking, bones, bugs, snares or something interesting. It was very educational and I learned a lot. The horses were fantastic, in great shape and brave as can be. I was able to ride 3 different horses while I was there which really added to the experience, and as I always say - the more horses the better. ” Aja Deren Zambezi Horse Safari - Zimbabwe
“ Trip of a lifetime! Fully recommend booking with African Horse Safaris. The team helped me organise a trip of a lifetime even including some trips that were horsey. The planning and timing of the trips allowed little stress on our side. We did 2 weeks volunteering in Zimbabwe which was amazing and allowed us to partake in so many activities including a horse swim and polo crosse with wild animals around. Then we went up to Hwange and rode with Ride Zimbabwe which was unreal. A truly once in a lifetime experience with amazing guides. I thank AHS for helping to book and source these fabulous places. ” Charlotte Baron Zimbabwe Working Holiday and Hwange Safari - Zimbabwe
“ How was my trip to Zimbabwe? I've been getting this question a lot over the last few days. And my answer is always the same: An absolute dream came true for me in Zimbabwe. I enjoyed everything from the first second to the last. The team of Ride Zimbabwe is incredibly welcoming and supportive. Especially our guide James knew the bush incredibly well and could explain and share so much about everything (animals, plants, African traditions and culture). In Gizmet I found my perfect partner for the safari. He is a super sweet white gelding who is very easy-going, but also likes to speed up when cantering. Riding in the bush is an experience that everyone should have once. You get a unique insight into the nature and wildlife of Zimbabwe. Through our mobile camps we also had the chance to see many different parts of the Hwange National Park. We loved our game drives and were very lucky! We saw elephants, zebras, giraffes, kudus and lots of lions (and of course many other animals). watching the sundowners and especially the stars around the campfire will stay in my memory forever. The African sky is simply unique. The whole team of Ride Zimbabwe gave us a unique time and I can't thank them enough! Thank you again for everything! I can't wait to start my next adventure with you once my bank account has recovered. ” Sabrina Sánchez Pérez Hwange Horse Safari - Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe Riding Safari

Covid-19: accommodations, varden safaris | southern hwange national park.

Buffalo

We believe in being active, getting out there, touching, smelling, and hearing the bush. We focus on riding and walking safaris. To us, there is nothing better than being out on a horse in the African Wilderness. Game drives are great, but once you have experienced wildlife from horseback it's hard to go back to the smelly bumpy jeep!

Primarily focusing on small group (min 2, max 8 guests) horse riding safaris, we have several riding safari options depending on your ability and length of time. Our rides are suitable for intermediate to advanced riders. We understand that riders in particular don’t like to be confined thus we offer bespoke itineraries to let the WALKING explorer in you get out ..TROTTING - CANTERING...!!!

Our Experienced Professional Guide, James Varden, ever enthusiastic about the bush, is ready to take you on horseback to view the graceful and powerful Verreaux’s Eagle, and a diversity of wildlife, such as giraffes, kudu, eland, zebra, bird life, and plant life. Ride Zimbabwe is truly a small and independently owned company, with James and Janine personally managing and running each safari.

7 Night Plains Game Horseback Safari

3 nights Matopos, 4 nights Cawston Wildlife estate

This ride is for strong intermediate to experienced riders. Paces will be medium with a number of canters. There will be logs to jump (nothing serious) rough ground to navigate and trees to avoid! Suitable for families with children over 12 who are confident and capable riders.

No dangerous wildlife such as elephant, buffalo or lion are found in the areas of Cawston and Matobo.

The ideal time to visit is from April through to end of November. December and Jan riding is possible but rain is likely. Due to wet season we close in February. March is possible but wet with very dense bush so mammal sightings are minimal. Early morning temperatures in May, June, July and early August can get to zero degrees Celsius. Midday temperatures at those times are very comfortable and may reach high 20’s by end of August. September through November mornings are much warmer and midday temperatures can get to the mid 30’s.

Riding hats are advisable due to the rocky areas and distance from medical facilities.

“Meet James Varden; your professional safari guide and one of the hosts who’ll be ensuring your riding safari is unforgettable. James has the well founded reputation of being one of the top safari guides in Southern Africa with over 30 years’ experience in the field, with a zeal for all things big and small, wild and woolly. His unrivalled knowledge of birding makes him one of the top ornithologists in the country. The hide sit, ideal for keen photographers and wildlife enthusiasts who seek a unique and exclusive way to enjoy wildlife while visiting Victoria Falls, is run by professional guide Charles Brightman.

The two-hour activity, which is available to groups of up to six, is best done in the early morning or late afternoon.

Don’t miss the opportunity to witness the spectacular sight of hundreds of vultures swooping down and feeding on leftover meat scraps and bones from the on-site restaurants in front of Victoria Falls Safari Lodge at 1pm daily.

As well as providing the opportunity for visitors to spot white headed vultures, hooded vultures, lappet faced vultures and white backed vultures, this supplementary feeding program aids the survival of these remarkable, but endangered birds.

The activity, which is free and appeals to all age groups, begins with a briefing on a deck beneath Victoria Falls Safari Lodge, about the ecological importance of vultures and the plight they are facing, before guests take a short walk down a bush path to a hide to view the vultures feeding.

Vulture populations are dwindling due to a variety of human created issues, including electrocution by power lines, loss of available and safe food supply, direct and indirect poisoning and the use of their parts for traditional medicines.

As the sun sets, the nightly chorus comes alive

Hwange is one of the largest reserves in Zimbabwe but is still easily accessible from the major tourist hubs across Zimbabwe, home to 400 different species of bird and 107 types of mammals.

Ride across a region of the Hwange National Park that is underlain by deep Kalahari sands, the perfect terrain for barefoot horses, the landscape is predominantly flat with no mountains or Kopjes in sight.

This makes for some excellent riding conditions and unimpeded views of the vast amount of wildlife that call this area home. Throughout these pan fringe areas numerous mammals roam amongst the wonderful woodlands, in particular elephants and giraffe, and if that is not exciting enough, there may be opportunity to sail over a natural jump or two!
