What is airline elite status?

Typical benefits of airline elite status, requirements to earn airline elite status, other ways to qualify for airline elite status, which airline elite status is best, how to pick the right airline elite status program for you, airline status, recapped.

If you’re an infrequent traveler or a hardcore bargain hunter, you may have never considered becoming an elite member of an airline loyalty program — but you’re missing out on perks that could make your travel more comfortable and affordable. Elite status comes with benefits such as free upgrades, bonus miles, early boarding, flight discounts and free passes to airport lounges.

So what does having elite status mean, exactly? How do you get elite status on airlines? Which airline elite status is best? Here’s NerdWallet’s guide explaining airline elite status and its benefits.

Every airline has a loyalty program, commonly called a frequent flyer program, that you can join for free. American Airlines has its AAdvantage program . United has MileagePlus . Southwest calls its loyalty program Rapid Rewards . There are several more.

Members can earn miles or points every time you fly, assuming you book directly through the airline. Your miles or points are redeemable for future flights and other rewards.

» Learn more: How to get started with frequent flyer programs

In some frequent flyer programs, flights will not only earn you points, but also credit toward elite status. These can get a little confusing, especially since airlines usually have two different benchmarks you must hit to qualify as elite.

For example, to earn elite status on American Airlines , you have to:

Accumulate a certain number of Elite Qualifying Dollars, which are based on how much money you spend with the airline.

Hit a minimum number of either Elite Qualifying Miles, which are based on the physical distance flown, or Elite Qualifying Segments, which are flight segments flown.

Most airlines tally these credits over the course of a calendar year. If you hit the minimum threshold, you automatically become an elite member for the remainder of the year in which you qualified plus all the following year, enjoying the perks that whole time.

Every airline rewards its elites a little differently. Most U.S. airlines give elite members bonus miles when they fly. For example, American AAdvantage elite members earn anywhere from 40% to 120% more AAdvantage miles when they fly than do non-elite AAdvantage members. Southwest Airlines gives its A-List members a 25% bonus on the Rapid Rewards points they earn when they fly.

Airlines typically divide their elite members into tiers like silver, gold and platinum, with increasingly difficult requirements to earn the status (but better benefits).

Here are some of the most common perks for elite members of some of the biggest U.S. airlines: American, United and Delta.

Bonus miles or points when you fly.

Free checked bags.

Wider selection of flights or seats that can be booked as "award flights" with miles instead of cash.

Priority boarding.

Enhanced customer service support.

Complimentary upgrades.

Southwest has an elite status program called A-List , but it offers fewer benefits than some of the other carriers. That’s because Southwest already offers free checked bags, and the airline doesn't have a first class cabin (or even assigned seating ).

» Keep reading: The beginners guide to points and miles

Status tiers and benchmarks differ across airlines. These are some of the typical qualifications.

American Airlines elite status requirements

Here’s how many Elite Qualifying Dollars and either Elite Qualifying Miles or Elite Qualifying Segments you need to reach each tier in the AAdvantage program.

United Airlines elite status requirements

United Airlines uses two metrics to determine elite status in its MileagePlus program: Premier Qualifying Flights, which are essentially flight segments flown, and Premier Qualifying Points, which are awarded based on how much money you spend with the airline.

To reach elite, you must earn either a certain number of PQFs and PQPs combined or a higher number of PQPs alone, in addition to flying a minimum of four flight segments on United or United Express. United has no distance requirement to reach elite, making it a potentially good choice for travelers who take a lot of short flights.

United's PQF and PQP requirements

You can qualify for each Premier status level through Jan. 31, 2026, based on your activity between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2024.

Delta Air Lines elite status requirements

The Delta SkyMiles program calls its elites Medallion members, and they get there by earning Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs).

As of 2024, here are the requirements for each level of elite status:

Silver Medallion: 5,000 MQDs.

Gold Medallion: 10,000 MQDs.

Platinum Medallion: 15,000 MQDs.

Diamond Medallion: 28,000 MQDs.

Southwest Airlines elite status requirements

Southwest has two elite tiers in its Rapid Rewards program, both of which come with priority boarding — a big perk since Southwest has no reserved seating, and getting on the plane sooner means more seats to choose from.

A-List: 25 one-way flights or 35,000 tier qualifying points.

A-List Preferred: 50,000 one-way flights or 70,000 tier qualifying points.

Southwest recently announced some significant changes coming to the Rapid Rewards program, including lower requirements for A-List status in 2024. Read more on that here .

Beyond flying, travelers have a few other avenues to become elite status members depending on the airline.

Use the right airline credit card

Some airline credit cards help you qualify for elite status faster. As an example:

United℠ Explorer Card has a built-in way to earn up to 1,000 Premier Qualifying Points in a calendar year by earning 500 PQP each time you spend $12,000 on the card.

Tap your elite status from a partner airline

Already have elite status with an airline? Many times, you can automatically enjoy the equivalent perks on a partner. For example, if you have Gold status in American’s AAdvantage program, you can automatically enjoy the perks of Oneworld Ruby status when you fly partner airlines in the Oneworld alliance .

Fly a partner airline

Most major airlines partner with other airlines that let members earn credits toward elite status when they fly. Get to know which airlines partner with your preferred airline so you can earn credit toward elite status on your favorite domestic airline even when you fly a different airline internationally.

For example, if you fly Air France , you have the opportunity to earn credits toward Medallion status on Delta Air Lines.

» Learn more: The basics of airline partnerships and alliances

Purchase an upgrade

When you pay cash to upgrade your seat or your cabin on a Delta flight, the money you spend counts toward your Medallion Qualification Dollars. Other airlines have similar policies that can help you become an elite flyer faster.

Achieving status can cost a lot in terms of both dollars and time spent, so it's wise to pick a program that offers the most value.

After a deep-dive analysis , NerdWallet determined that Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan offers the best elite status program for travelers, known as MVP status .

Many travelers wonder if they should be loyal to a single airline . However, while you can spread out your spend, you could potentially sacrifice your ability to earn status. As you shop around for an airline elite status program to target, we recommend you strongly consider the following factors.

Know your preferred airline. To decide which airline elite status is best for you, one question overrules all the others: Which airline will you fly the most? If you live in a Delta hub like Atlanta and usually fly that airline, consider pursuing elite status on Delta. If you live and fly places well served by multiple airlines, consider the qualifications to earn the level of elite status you want.

Figure out your priority perks. Also ask yourself which perks you’d most enjoy from elite status. Lots of bonus miles? Flight upgrades? Easy same-day standby? A chance to board the plane before all the overhead baggage space is snapped up? Remember, most elite status benefits can also be purchased or might come as a credit card benefit (like cards with complimentary checked bags or lounge access ).

Do some simple math. If upgrades to extra-legroom Economy Plus seats on United sound irresistible to you, price out how much you’d pay in cash to earn status. That way you’ll have a rough dollar value of the benefits you’d get as an elite and a better sense of how much the status is worth to you. If the cost to earn status outweighs paying out of pocket for the upgrade each time you fly, you might be better off purchasing your preferred conveniences a la carte.

Don’t assume airline elite status is out of reach. Skim your favorite airline’s benefits and requirements to see if you could reasonably spend to reach your desired level of status. Research which airline elite status is worth it. Log in to your frequent flyer account to see how many miles, points, segments or dollars you’ve racked up so far without even trying. You might already be on your way.

Here's How to Score Epic Deals on Business- and First-class Flights

Experience a more luxurious way of flying at a fraction of the price.

Scott's Cheap Flights , best known for surfacing flight deals through email, is giving passengers the chance to upgrade — literally.

The company just announced a new Elite membership level for travelers looking to book discounted airfares in premium economy, business, and first-class. Its existing premium membership option shows only flight deals in economy class.

Elite members have already been alerted to the availability of $863 round-trip premium economy flights between New York City and Barcelona, and to business-class flights between Newark and Lisbon for $1,150 round-trip — a bargain even by Scott's Cheap Flights standards.

Elite members can typically expect business-class flight deals to Europe with price tags of around $1,700. Business- and first-class flights to Asia are likely to come in around $2,200 round-trip from the U.S., which may feel like a bargain when you wake up well-rested in a faraway place.

Access to Elite deals costs $199 per year, about four times the cost of Scott's Cheap Flights Premium membership. Travelers upgrading from Premium to Elite may be eligible to pay a prorated fee.

Those selecting Elite membership will have the option of deciding how many deals they'd like to be notified about and can get savings alerts on everything from economy to first-class flights .

At $49 a year, Scott's Cheap Flights Premium membership allows people to track deals from up to 10 airports. It surfaces deals in economy class for travel two to nine months out, as well as weekend getaways and mistake fares that can result in big savings for savvy travelers.

A free membership tier allows travelers to track deals from five airports, alerting them to a limited selection of flight deals surfaced by the Scott's Cheap Flights team.

5 things I'd tell my younger self about airline status

Kyle Olsen

Eight years ago, I qualified for United Airlines Premier 1K status , and earlier this year, I earned American Airlines Executive Platinum status for the first time.

I've been mapping out how I could get to the 18,000 Premier qualifying points and 54 Premier qualifying flights to retain my 1K status, but after realizing the cost and time commitment to do so, I've been wondering if it's worth it .

If you're new to airline elite status or debating whether it's worth requalifying, here are five thoughts to consider.

It's easy to overvalue upgrades

elite flight travel

If you have airline elite status, don't expect many more upgrades to first class by earning a status tier above yours.

When I first qualified for Premier 1K status in 2015, United upgraded me on almost all my eligible flights. But in recent years, it has become increasingly common to encounter long upgrade lists on United flights, especially on aircraft operating hub-to-hub routes. During the past year, I was only able to secure upgrades for approximately 15% of my eligible United flights, which is a testament to the scarcity of upgrades.

This surge in demand has made securing an upgrade even more challenging, even for top-tier elite members.

You might be disappointed if you spend lots of money and time earning airline status in the hopes of more upgrades.

Related: How to get an upgrade when flying on major US airlines

Aim for mid-tier status

elite flight travel

Upgrades aside, mid-tier elite members can expect a similar day-of-travel experience to upper-tier elite members. Here's a comparison of some popular perks for mid- and top-tier elite travelers with the three major U.S. airlines.

In the case of American and United, mid-tier elite members have access to the same Main Cabin Extra and Economy Plus seats that upper-tier elite members receive, so whether you're a mid-tier or upper-elite member, you can expect to sit in the same seat. That said, Delta Air Lines further differentiates its Gold and Diamond Medallion statuses by waitlisting Gold Medallion members for Comfort+.

Since most travelers seldom travel with three checked bags, the additional luggage allowance between mid- and upper-tier elite status is often an unrealized benefit.

And finally, if you're traveling on partner-operated flights, mid- and upper-tier elite members have largely the same perks — including access to American's Flagship Lounges and United Clubs when booked in economy. There's only a marginal difference for AAdvantage elite members, as Oneworld Emerald does include first-class lounge privileges .

It's true that higher-tier elite travelers can access perks like American systemwide upgrades , Delta Global Upgrade Certificates and United PlusPoints , but even those aren't always easy to use.

Dropping from the upper echelon of elite status to a mid-tier level? It might not be as significant as you think.

It is not always advisable to rely on credit cards for airline status

elite flight travel

This is a straightforward tip I recommend to all readers.

Whenever possible, avoid relying solely on airline cobranded cards to qualify for top-tier status. Only some of United's credit cards earn Premier qualifying points , and the ones that do earn at a highly underwhelming rate. You'll earn just 500 PQPs for every $12,000 in card spending, up to a yearly maximum. You must earn 24,000 PQPs to qualify for Premier 1K status this year if you plan to use United credit cards to accrue PQPs, so you can't get very close through credit card spending.

Similarly, American Airlines' credit cards, like the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® , (see rates and fees) earn just 1 Loyalty Point per dollar — that's a long path to the 200,000 Loyalty Points required for Executive Platinum status.

But more importantly, if all your miles are tied to one airline currency, you limit yourself to that currency and risk facing unexpected decreases in mileage value. This occurred in May and June of 2023 when United abruptly raised award rates by more than 100% on certain routes without prior notice.

The solution? Transferable credit card rewards offer the flexibility to convert your rewards into points and miles across multiple hotel and airline loyalty programs, ensuring you can maximize the value of your rewards even if one program undergoes a devaluation. By accessing a wide range of partners, you can select the program that provides the highest value and perks rather than being restricted to a single program.

Here are a few of our favorite cards that earn transferable points:

  • The Platinum Card® from American Express
  • The Business Platinum Card® from American Express
  • American Express® Gold Card
  • Bilt Mastercard® (see rates and fees )
  • Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card (see rates and fees )
  • Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card (see rates and fees )
  • Chase Sapphire Preferred Card
  • Chase Sapphire Reserve
  • Ink Business Preferred Credit Card
  • Citi Premier® Card (see rates and fees )

Of course, that doesn't mean you should entirely shun airline credit cards. These often come with elitelike perks such as free checked bags, priority boarding and even lounge access. They can also jump-start your path to qualifying for elite status. You're just likely better off using one (or more) of the above cards for your everyday spending.

Partner-issued tickets can be a less expensive way to qualify

elite flight travel

Sometimes, it can feel like a losing proposition to spend enough money to reach the required number of Delta Medallion Qualification Dollars, United Premier qualifying points or American Loyalty Points to earn elite status.

However, you can sometimes credit partner-issued tickets to your preferred airline and earn toward these metrics at a faster rate. That's because you generally earn on the distance, fare class and partner that operates the flight instead of the price of the ticket. You can read more about this option in these stories:

  • Earn American AAdvantage status and Loyalty Points quickly with Oneworld partner flights
  • How to earn Medallion Qualification Dollars inexpensively by booking Delta partner tickets
  • How to earn Oneworld Emerald status for under $3,000
  • United's best-kept elite status secret: How to earn PQPs faster with partner flights

If you want to earn airline status by crediting partner flights to your preferred program, you're generally looking for an inexpensive fare, a long flight and a fare class that earns a generous amount of MQDs, PQPs or Loyalty Points.

Cross-airline status can make a big difference

elite flight travel

A few weeks ago, I traveled on Alaska Airlines as an American Airlines elite member and was quite impressed with the benefits. Alaska provides eligible American elite members same-day flight changes, priority boarding and first-class upgrades.

With American, Delta and United status, you receive Oneworld , SkyTeam and Star Alliance status, respectively. That can be great for accessing lounges on qualifying international itineraries and receiving day-of-travel perks with partner carriers.

Related: This is how Star Alliance can learn from Oneworld Emerald status

Bottom line

I think airline status is still a game changer with valuable perks like priority check-in and boarding, lounge access on some flights and access to extra-legroom seating. With airline status, you can also save money with complimentary checked luggage and various fee waivers.

Elite members also have dedicated customer service lines, giving them priority assistance in case of flight disruptions. This can make a notable difference in resolving issues, which can help make for a smoother journey.

Overall, airline elite status can reward loyalty and significantly enhance the journey for frequent travelers. However, it's not the slam dunk it used to be. First-class upgrades can be infrequent, and the differences between mid- and top-tier elite status have narrowed in recent years. If you're thinking about pursuing airline status in 2023 (or beyond), these considerations can help you make an informed decision.

Lucky couple gets vip ‘private jet’ treatment as the only passengers on plane: ‘like winning the lottery’.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

It was a poor man’s private jet.

Commercial travel doesn’t always have to mean being crammed into a packed aircraft like sardines. A lucky UK couple became the envy of flyers everywhere after having a whole flight to themselves — essentially allowing them to enjoy the “private jet” experience for an economy price.

While their incredible solo flight occurred in 2021, the story is just now taking off online.

“It was such an incredible experience, and I don’t think it would happen again. It’s like winning the lottery,” Samantha McCuillon, 50, told the Manchester Evening News of the once-in-a-lifetime experience.

UK couple Kevin and Sam McCuillon became the envy of flyers everywhere after having a whole flight to themselves, essentially allowing .

Sam, who works as a nurse, and her husband Kevin, 52, had reportedly flown on a RyanAir flight from Manchester to Corfu for a week-long vacation.

However, the couple was having such a good time that they decided to extend their vacation by several days and ended up booking a later flight home through low-cost airline Jet2.

However, the pair realized something was off when they arrived at the terminal Saturday and saw that no one was there.

“We thought it was a bit odd that nobody was around,” recalled Sam, who said she “started to get a bit panicky.”

When the healthcare worker broached the issue with the staff, they assured her that “everything was OK,” but that did little to calm her as, she said, “it was getting later and later past the departure time.”

Things grew even more eerie when the pair were the only ones aboard the shuttle bus to the plane, leading them to believe they were late for the flight.

That’s when the travelers stepped aboard and realized they were the solo passengers.

“Then we got to the plane and went up the steps, the captain was there with two flight attendants, and they told us we were the only ones going on the plane,” described Sam. “The captain said he would tell us all the information, where we flying over and things like that, at the front of the plane instead of making an announcement.”

She added, “He then said once we’d taken off, we can do whatever we like and treat the plane as our own private jet — he said we could run up and down the aisle and do what we wanted.”

The happy couple pose with a flight attendant.

As it turned out, the flight was nearly unsold; however, they decided to make the trip anyway as the plane needed to return to Manchester.

Needless to say, the couple took to it much like Kevin McCallister with the Plaza Hotel in “Home Alone 2.”

“It was amazing, the staff were lovely, they gave us Champagne to drink, sweets to eat. We didn’t have to pay for anything,” gushed Sam to the Manchester newspaper. “We didn’t actually run up and down but we laughed and joked with the attendants. We kept saying that we needed more leg room.

“It was actually quite bizarre,” she continued. “At one point, I dozed off and when I woke up, I wondered where everyone was.”

Accompanying photos show the couple having a ball on the nearly abandoned 200-seater aircraft, which evoked the desolate Overlook Hotel from “The Shining” but at 30,000 feet.

The couple.

It was perhaps especially refreshing given the rampant incidents of manspreading , inflight “footsie ,” and other space violations that seem to have become endemic to airplane travel of late.

The only caveat was they had to wear masks much of the time, as it was the height of the COVID pandemic.

Best of all, the inadvertent VIP experience only cost them around $130 — the equivalent of an economy-class ticket.

They even received a special shoutout from Jet2.

“We are delighted that Kevin and Samantha got to experience our VIP customer service in true style,” said an airline spokesperson, who attributed the “ghost ship” phenomenon to COVID-era airline restrictions.

“Due to the traffic light system in place for international travel at the time, customers had only just been able to start traveling to Corfu again, meaning flights departing from Manchester were very busy but flights back were much quieter,” the company explained.

Is Elite better than Premium or Free?

What are some of the best deals elite members receive, the bottom line, here's why scott's cheap flights is my go-to for finding dirt-cheap international and first class fares during this surge in travel prices.

When you buy through our links, Business Insider may earn an affiliate commission. Learn more

  • Scott's Cheap Flights is a free newsletter and website for cheap flight deals.
  • The best deals are for Premium members, while business and first class fares are for Elite level.
  • Elite costs $199 per year and includes Premium. I tried it out to see how it works.

Insider Today

They say once you fly first class, you can never go back to coach. There's nothing like going past the first class curtain to plush, and in some cases, lie-flat seats, while tucking into chef-prepared meals and sipping champagne.

I know personally that the saying is true. But unfortunately, I've made the long walk back to economy many times after experiencing the indulgent front of the plane.

That's because for most fliers, business or first class is often prohibitively expensive and a rarity saved for special occasions or occasional upgrades.

However, Scott's Cheap Flights , a newsletter and website for finding the best flight deals, has an Elite tier specifically for cheap premium economy, business class, and first class flights. It's not free like its basic newsletter, but if you like to stretch out in style, it's worth checking out.

I tried out an Elite subscription, comped for review purposes, and for just under $17 per month, think it's one of the best ways to find good deals on upgraded cabins. Here's how it works, how it compares to the free service, and some of the best deals I spotted.

What is Scott's Cheap Flights?

Scott's Cheap Flights is a newsletter and website that shares incredible flight deals, in some cases, even 90% off a typical flight price.

It has a team of researchers who religiously research flights and if you opt in to email subscriptions, you'll be alerted when airlines have sales or mistake fares.

Basic membership is free, but for tailored and exclusive deals, you'll have to upgrade to Premium , while Elite (which includes Premium) is exclusively for premium economy, business class, and first class flight deals. Here's a full breakdown of how it works .

What is Scott's Cheap Flights Elite?

While a standard membership shares limited deals, and Premium alerts you to significantly more deals on international and domestic economy flights, mistake fares, and some of the most popular destinations, Elite focuses specifically on premium economy, business class, and first class flights.

However, because it also includes Premium membership, you'll enjoy the best of both worlds — in other words, all the best deals without limitations.

Deals arrive daily in your inbox or can be found on the website. Online, you'll see deals reserved only for Premium or Elite members .

To find the best cheap flights for you, you'll want to "follow" airports where you typically depart. Free members may select up to five airports, premium members can follow up to 10, and Elite members have unlimited choices.

Elite  is $199 per year, which is significantly more than Scott's Cheap Flights' Premium service that costs $49 for an annual subscription. Regular memberships are free .

But if you travel often, love to jump on good deals, and specifically want to fly in upgraded cabins, that's just under $17 a month, which is pretty cheap.

You may also try it for free for 14 days at no cost if you decide it isn't for you.

How do I sign up for Scott's Cheap Flights' Elite subscription?

Signing up for a Scott's Cheap Flights Elite account is easy:

  • First, create an account, by going to the homepage where you'll submit your name, email, and create a password. You'll also answer prompts to make sure you see the best deals.
  • For Elite, you'll then be prompted to input your credit card information.

That depends on how often you fly or plan to jump on deals, and how important elevated cabins are to you.

However, to see how many more deals an Elite member receives (which, again, includes Premium ), I also signed up for a free account on another email to track how many I received for each tier. Over a five-week period, here's how they compared:

Free service:

  • 30 email deals for economy domestic and international flights
  • 16 emails with destination-related content, travel tips, and offers for discounts on paid memberships

Premium service:

  • 121 email deals for economy domestic and international flights
  • 16 emails with destination-related content, travel tips, and offers for discounts on paid memberships

Elite service:

  • 9 email deals for domestic and international premium economy class flights
  • 26 email deals for domestic and international business and first class flights
  • 126 email deals for economy domestic and international flights

So, looking at deals specifically, since all members receive similar promotional emails, being a Premium member earned significantly more deals than a basic membership.

Elite included all the same Premium emails, with the addition of upgraded cabin deals, which were mostly for business class over any other.

While I didn't receive nearly as many premium or business class deals as I did for economy flights through Premium, the number of premium/business/first class sales totaled just about the same as all the emails I received in entirety as a free member, which is a pretty good showing.

While I received a lot of great deals as an Elite member , these offered some of the most significant savings to popular destinations. Do note that these were tailored to my residence on the East Coast:

  • New York City to Quito, Ecuador in premium economy: $505
  • New York City to Barcelona, Spain in premium economy: $778
  • Boston to Copenhagen, Denmark in premium economy, $990
  • New York to Bangkok, Thailand in premium economy, $1,186
  • New York City to Nassau, Bahamas in business class, $623
  • New York City to Quito, Ecuador in business class: $755
  • Boston to Seattle in business class, $997
  • Boston to Rome, Italy in business class, $1,568
  • Hartford to Madrid, Spain in business class, $2,210
  • New York, to Cape Town, South Africa, $2,704

Flying business or first class is an indulgence that removes many pain points, but is also expensive and discounts are hard to come by.

However, Scott's Cheap Flights Elite service  hones in specifically on them, offering major savings.

If you fly often and are open to paying more for premium economy, business class, and first class, then Scott's Cheap Flights Elite service is one of the best ways to find cheap airfare on these cabins. And at roughly $17 per month for a year, this price is cheaper than buying dinner.

However, if you don't fly much or are perfectly comfortable in coach, you're better off trying Premium , which still nets great deals for about $4 per month. Or, start with the free version and upgrade if you like what you see.

WILKES-BARRE — ALG Vacations, the nation’s leading leisure tour operator and part of the Apple Leisure Group, has honored Boscov’s Travel as a 2024 ALGV “Elite Crown Jewel” travel agency.

With ALG Vacations, Crown Jewel is the highest status a retail travel agency can achieve.

ALGV Elite tiers, based on 2023 sales production, include Sapphire/Sapphire Select, Emerald, Diamond/Diamond Preferred, and Crown Jewel.

Less than 10% of travel agencies nationwide selling leisure travel have been honored with the ALGV Elite distinction.

“ALG Vacations is thrilled to recognize the nation’s top-producing travel agencies again this year with the ALGV Elite program,” said ALGV’s Jim Tedesco, Vice President/Sales. “Elite agencies are highly recommended by ALG Vacations because their advisors know our brands, product offerings and policies well, and have reached a level of sales that can only be achieved through superior service and high customer satisfaction.”

Tedesco said ALG Vacations’ highly respected brands include Apple Vacations, Funjet Vacations, Travel Impressions, Southwest Vacations, Blue Sky Tours and United Vacations.

ALGV Elite agencies are rewarded with a variety of benefits and perks from ALG Vacations, including in-resort training, exclusive promotional codes to pass on to their customers, and access to a VIP support desk, enabling them to deliver premium service to the end consumer. Airline Credit Card Reviews

Best card for flights overall: chase sapphire preferred® card.

If you aren't loyal to a single airline, you need the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card in your wallet. This card earns Chase Ultimate Rewards® points that you can use to book travel directly through the Chase Travel Portal , which gives you access to virtually every airline. You can also transfer Chase points to various airline and hotel partners , including United , British Airways, JetBlue, and Hyatt .

This card offers a very strong lineup of perks and rewards in exchange for a relatively moderate annual fee. You'll earn 5x points on travel purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards and 2x points on all other travel purchases. The card also offers 3x points on dining.

Travel includes everything from airfare to parking to hotels, while dining includes restaurants, delivery services, and even some bars. The card also offers one of the best welcome bonuses among consumer credit cards, and you get some valuable travel insurance as well, including trip delay insurance, primary car rental insurance, and purchase protection.

If you apply for the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and find that you're a fan of earning and redeeming travel points, remember that you can always upgrade to its higher-end sibling, the Chase Sapphire Reserve®, after your first year.

The Reserve has a hefty $550 annual fee, but it also offers up to $300 in annual travel credits that apply to virtually any travel purchase and earns 5x total points on air travel and 10x total points on hotels and car rentals purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards (after earning the $300 travel credit). You'll earn 3x points on other travel and dining purchases with the Reserve.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® is currently offering a welcome bonus of 60,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.

Best Card for American Airlines Flyers: Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard®

The Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard® gets you a free checked bag on American Airlines domestic itineraries, along with preferred boarding and discounts on inflight purchases. It's currently offering a welcome bonus of 75,000 American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles after making $3,500 in purchases within the first four months of account opening. That's worth around 105000 in flights, based on our valuation of American Airlines miles .

It also earns 2x miles on eligible American Airlines purchases and on restaurant and gas station spending (and 1 mile per dollar on everything else). We also like that the annual fee is $99, waived for first 12 months. If you spend $20,000 on the card in an account year and then renew your card, you'll get a $125 American Airlines flight discount.

Other American Airlines credit cards to consider are the no-annual-fee American Airlines AAdvantage® MileUp® card and the premium Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard®. However, the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard® is your all-around best bet for a moderate annual fee.

Qualifying for elite status with American Airlines AAdvantage is now based on earning Loyalty Points. Along with earning Loyalty Points from flying and partner spending, you can earn 1 Loyalty Point per dollar spent on co-branded American Airlines cards, including the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard®.

Read our full Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard® review .

Best Card for Delta Flyers: Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card

Out of Delta's lineup of credit cards, the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card offers the best balance between a moderate $0 intro for the first year, then $150 annual fee and elite-like perks that can save you cash and improve your travel experience.

This Delta credit card is offering a welcome bonus of 70,000 bonus miles after you spend $3,000 in purchases on your new card in your first six months from account opening. Business Insider pegs Delta miles value at 1.1 cents apiece, on average, making this bonus worth about 77000 in flights.

The card earns 2x miles on eligible Delta purchases, 2x miles at U.S. supermarkets and at restaurants worldwide, and 1 mile per dollar on all other eligible purchases. This makes the card a valuable option for everyday spending, not just for earning bonus miles on your Delta purchases.

Other Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card benefits that make it a standout pick for Delta loyalists are a first checked bag for free and priority boarding on Delta flights, a $200 flight credit when you spend $10,000 or more in a calendar year, 15% off Delta award flights, and 20% off inflight purchases as a statement credit.

Read our full Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card review .

Best Card for United Flyers: United℠ Explorer Card

The United℠ Explorer Card offers the perks you'd expect from an airline credit card — a free checked bag (you need to pay for the United flight with your Explorer card to get this perk), priority boarding, discounts on inflight purchases, and bonus miles for purchases with the airline — but also some very valuable extras.

If you have this card (or any other United credit card ), you get expanded access to United's lowest-priced "saver" awards, which could help you save miles on an upcoming flight booking. The United℠ Explorer Card also offers two one-time United Club passes each year, and an application fee credit of up to $100 for Global Entry, TSA PreCheck, or NEXUS.

New cardholders can earn 60,000 bonus miles after you spend $3,000 on purchases in the first three months your account is open. United miles are worth  1.3 cents each, on average, so you can expect to get around 78000 in flights with this bonus.

Read our full United Explorer card review .

Chase issues a whopping six United credit cards ranging from the no-annual-fee United Gateway℠ Card to the luxe United Club℠ Infinite Card , which comes with United Club airport lounge access .

Best Card for Southwest Flyers: Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card

The Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card is another example where a higher annual fee is warranted due to the value you get. Thanks to annual benefits like $75 in statement credits for travel on Southwest and four upgraded boardings where available, the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card could be well worth it if you're a regular Southwest flyer.

The statement credit for $75 toward Southwest purchases each year effectively lowers the $149 annual fee to lower than the annual fee for the next-cheapest Southwest consumer card, the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card ($99 annual fee).

The Priority card offers a bonus of 7,500 Southwest Rapid Rewards points each year after your account anniversary (you can use these points to book award flights). That's worth about $105 in airfare, based on our valuation of Southwest points. Additionally, you'll get 25% off inflight purchases. If you fly Southwest more than once or twice a year, this card can easily be worth the annual fee.

The points you earn from any of the Southwest credit cards can help you qualify for the coveted Southwest Companion Pass , which allows a designated companion to fly with you for next to free (just pay taxes and fees) on paid and award flights.

Southwest is a Chase Ultimate Rewards transfer partner, so you can move points from cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, Chase Sapphire Reserve®, or Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card to Southwest instantly at a 1:1 ratio if you need to boost your balance. However, you cannot transfer points directly between your Southwest credit cards and your Ultimate Rewards-earning credit cards.

Best Premium Airline Credit Card: Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card

The Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card is the most rewarding premium credit card from any of the three major legacy US airlines: American Airlines, Delta, and United. And if you're a Delta loyalist, it could end up saving you a lot of money.

Although most other premium airline cards come with airport lounge membership, the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card is unique in that when you fly Delta, it not only offers Delta Sky Club access , but also entry to Centurion Lounges when you've used your Amex card to pay for your ticket.

Right now, Delta Reserve cardholders enjoy unlimited access to Delta Sky Clubs on qualifying same-day travel. Beginning February 2025, Reserve cardholders will receive 15 Sky Club visits a year unless they spent $75,000 or more on the Delta Reserve in the previous calendar year.

There's a welcome bonus of 100,000 bonus miles after you spend $6,000 in purchases on your new card in the first six months from account opening (worth around 110000 in flights based on Business Insider's valuations). You'll receive a free first checked bag and priority boarding on Delta flights, an annual Delta companion certificate, and a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application fee credit after you apply through any authorized enrollment provider.

This card charges a $650 annual fee, but it can be more than worthwhile if you fly Delta often and travel through airports with eligible airport lounges.

Best for Luxury Travel Benefits and Bonus Rewards on Flights: The Platinum Card® from American Express

The Platinum Card® from American Express likely won't make sense if you only travel once or twice a year, as it has a $695 annual fee. However, if you're on the road frequently, the card's many premium benefits — from airport lounge access to up to $200 in airline fee credits each year** — make it a useful pick.

The Platinum Card® from American Express earns a spot on our list of the top airline rewards cards because it earns 5 points per dollar on flights booked directly with the airline or through American Express Travel (on up to $500,000 in this category of spend per calendar year). That's one of the highest earning rates available on flight purchases. The Amex points you earn let you book flights directly through Amex Travel, or you can transfer them to more than a dozen airline partners to book flight awards.

Even if you're not traveling right now, the The Platinum Card® from American Express is still worth considering, as it's offering a lucrative welcome bonus offer and comes with Uber (including Uber Eats) Cash credits**, Saks credits**, digital subscription credits**, Equinox credits**, Walmart+ membership credits**, and SoulCycle At-Home Bike credit you can still use if you're staying close to home.

Read our full The Platinum Card® from American Express review

The Platinum Card® from American Express comes with a slew of valuable benefits, including up to $300 annually in Equinox credits**, $189 per year in credits for CLEAR® Plus membership**, up to $200 per year in credits toward eligible prepaid hotel bookings, and up to $240 annually in credits toward eligible digital subscriptions**.

Which Credit Card Offers the Best Airline Miles?

There isn't one "best" airline credit card or one type of airline mile that's categorically better than the others, because it depends on which airline is most convenient for you.

For example, if your home airport is small, you could have limited options when it comes to which airline you fly, so you'll likely want to earn whatever miles you need to fly from your hometown.

If you live near a large airport where your airline choices are plentiful and you have more options for loyalty, you may want to investigate how much different airline miles are worth. We recommend checking out Business Insider's updated guide to points and miles valuations , which attach a value (in cents) to the major airline currencies based on the types of award flights you can book through each.

You'll see that Delta miles are generally worth less than Alaska miles, but keep in mind all points and miles are only valuable if you can use them — so if you don't travel to destinations served by Alaska or its airline partners, earning its miles probably isn't your best bet.

Airline Credit Card Frequently Asked Questions

Is an airline credit card worth it.

If you're loyal to a particular airline, it could be worth it to get one of its co-branded cards. For instance, United offers the United℠ Explorer Card, which gets you benefits like a free checked bag and priority boarding on United.

If you aren't loyal to a particular airline and you simply book with whichever carrier is offering the cheapest airfare, an airline co-branded card may not be the best option. You could consider a travel rewards card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or The Platinum Card® from American Express instead. This way, you'll earn points that can be used to book airfare through Chase and Amex, respectively, as well as through specific airline transfer partners affiliated with the two programs.

How do airline credit cards work?

Airline credit cards work by earning miles in a particular frequent flyer program and require you to add your frequent flyer number to your card account. You're usually asked to do this during the credit card application process. Then, you'll earn miles on all your eligible credit card spending, and those earnings will be reflected in your frequent flyer account. You'll be able to access the miles you earned from your credit card directly through your frequent flyer account and use them to book award flights.

What's the difference between airline credit cards and travel rewards credit cards?

Airline credit cards earn you miles in a specific frequent flyer program, such as Southwest Rapid Rewards or United MileagePlus. Travel rewards cards, on the other hand, earn transferable points — rewards that you can transfer to a variety of airline and/or hotel partners. With travel rewards cards, you aren't locked into using your points with only one airline, but you also won't get airline-specific benefits like a free checked bag or priority boarding.

Do airline miles expire?

Airline miles usually expire, but there are some notable exceptions. Delta, JetBlue, Southwest, and United miles never expire, but with other programs like American Airlines AAdvantage, miles do expire if you don't have any qualifying activity within a certain period (24 months, in the AAdvantage program). Keep in mind that earning miles from using a co-branded airline credit card counts as a qualifying activity and can prevent your miles from expiring.

Should I get an airline credit card?

You should consider getting an airline credit card if you're loyal to a particular airline and fly often enough to get value from perks like free checked bags, priority boarding, and airport lounge access. Even folks who travel the same airline a couple of times a year can save money and get benefits from having an airline credit card.

Why You Should Trust Us: How We Chose the Best Airline Credit Cards

Business Insider chose the top airline cards based on the value each card offers in relation to its annual fee. To make sure we were considering the best airline credit cards from every perspective, we also researched the recommendations and methodology of top airline card lists from other websites.

In many cases, each publication had a different pick for the best credit card for a given airline — and in that situation, we arrived at our selection by returning to the question of which card offers the most value in return for its annual fee, excluding benefits that require spending extra money to unlock.

Note that we focused on credit card options for flying with major US airlines — including the "big three" of American, Delta, and United, as well as smaller popular carriers like Alaska, JetBlue, and Southwest. If you frequently fly with another airline like Frontier or Hawaiian, you may want to look into its co-branded credit card options.

With an airline credit card, not only will you earn miles on every purchase you make, but you can also earn a welcome bonus offer that will jump-start your frequent flyer account balance. Depending on the card you choose, you can also get benefits like a free checked bag, priority boarding, or an airline companion ticket.

Read Business Insider's guide to points and miles valuations to find out what your airline miles and credit card points are worth.

There isn't simply one best airline credit card; the right option for you depends on what airline you fly, whether you're a loyalist or want flexibility, how you want to use your miles, how much of an annual fee you're comfortable paying, and several other factors.

You'll also want to consider airline partnerships — for example, it could make sense to get an American Airlines credit card if you want to redeem miles for award flights on Oneworld partners like Japan Airlines and Cathay Pacific. Alternately, a card like the Aeroplan® Credit Card can make sense even if you don't fly Air Canada, because you can redeem Aeroplan points for flights on Star Alliance airlines including United and Lufthansa.

11 airline credit cards with free checked bag benefits that can save you hundreds, the free checked bag perk for most of these cards applies to multiple passengers, so the savings can quickly add up..

thumbnail

Most major U.S. airlines raised checked baggage fees this year. American Airlines, Delta, United, Alaska Airlines and JetBlue now charge $35 to $45 for a first checked bag on domestic and short-haul international flights.

There are a handful of ways to avoid paying to check bags. For instance, customers traveling in a premium cabin and those with elite status generally can check at least one bag for free. Or, you could fly with Southwest, which allows all passengers to check two bags for free.

The easiest way to avoid checked bag fees on most airlines is to open a co-branded airline credit card that offers free checked bags as an ongoing benefit. For anyone who isn't loyal to a single airline, there are even general travel credit cards with statement credit offers that can be used toward checked bag fees. (See our methodology for more information on how we made this list.)

What airlines offer free checked bags?

Southwest Airlines offers two free checked bags to all passengers, regardless of what type of ticket they purchase. For the other major U.S.-based airlines, your checked baggage allowance depends on the route, ticket type and elite status. There are also airline credit cards that grant you free checked bags as a benefit for having the card.

How can I get my baggage fee waived?

To get your airline checked baggage fee waived, you'll generally need elite status with that airline or its partners or a cobranded credit card that comes with free checked bags. You may also be able to avoid checked bag fees depending on the itinerary you're flying or the class of service. Many international flights and business class tickets come with free checked bags.

Is there a fee for a carry-on bag?

Carry-on baggage fees aren't the norm, but depending on the type of ticket and airline they are something to watch for. Some airlines charge passengers who booked the cheapest fares, often called basic economy, extra for a carry-on bag. Ultra-low-cost carriers, such as Spirit and Frontier, may also make you pay for a carry-on bag. Note that personal items, such as a purse or small backpack that can fit under the seat in front of you, are almost universally free.

Bottom line

Checked bag fees are rising once again, making many of the top airline credit cards even more valuable. With the highest domestic baggage fees hitting $90 a bag roundtrip, it can be worth getting a credit card if you check bags on one or two trips a year.
