You could also head south on a day trip to enjoy attractions like the Illawarra Fly Treetop Walk, Port Kembla Beach, Lake Illawarra, Budderoo National Park, or Jamberoo Action Park.

So for anyone wondering what to do in Wollongong, Australia, there is no shortage of attractions and activities in this beautiful coastal city of NSW!

Here is our list of the 20 best things to do in Wollongong!

If you’re driving from Sydney to Wollongong, you can do so along the Grand Pacific Drive. This coastal route from Sydney to Kiama is so gorgeous, and you’ll pass lots of scenic lookouts. Bald Hill Lookout is the best one, which overlooks Stanwell Park beach.

After Bald Hill Lookout, continue driving until you reach the famous Sea Cliff Bridge! It’s a massive, white bridge that curves away from the seaside cliffs and sticks out over the Pacific Ocean. So when you drive across it, you feel like you are flying over the sea.

It’s one of the coolest spots along the Grand Pacific Drive. The Sea Cliff Bridge has a little pedestrian walkway next to the road so you can walk along it as well.

After passing the bridge, you’ll drive through lots of charming beach towns until you can turn off the Grand Pacific Drive to Wollongong.

Whether you’re an art enthusiast or not, visiting the local art gallery is one of the best things to do in Wollongong.

This small but entertaining art museum is full of paintings, photographs, and other pieces from talented local artists. Lots of the art depicts scenes from the surrounding areas, so it’s a cool insight into the local culture, scenery, and wildlife.

The Wollongong Art Gallery is located right in the town centre, and only takes about an hour to explore but it’s a fun activity especially for a rainy day.

One of the best Wollongong attractions is the Botanic Gardens .

This huge green space is free to enter, so even if you’re not interested in all the plants you can just come relax in the gardens and read or have a picnic.

There are so many cool things to see at the Wollongong Botanic Garden, including rainforest and desert sections full of native and exotic plants.

The Wollongong Botanic Garden also has a small pond and stream with an adorable Japanese bridge and a beautifully landscaped rose garden.

Wollongong Botanic Gardens

Every Friday morning, the main pedestrian street of Wollongong fills up with an incredible local market .

This is the Forager’s Market, a farmers market where you can shop for fresh fruits and vegetables, homemade pastries, desserts, and bread, trendy clothes and accessories and a whole bunch of other products.

All the vendors are well-loved locals who run small businesses, so shopping here is a nice way to support the community and pick up some interesting souvenirs.

So if you’re in town on a Friday, this is one of the top things to do in Wollongong.

One of the best things to do in Wollongong is going for a bike ride along the Cycleway. This long pedestrian-friendly strip of sidewalk runs from Wollongong Harbour and up the coast all the way to the town of Thirroul.

The whole trail is 17 km long, so this is a great way to get some exercise and explore the small towns along the coast.

There are also some nice cafes right on the beach along the cycleway, like the North Break Cafe in Woonona, Olive’s Cafe in Bellambi, and Ruby’s Cafe in Bulli .

You could also further explore Thirroul when you arrive up there. The Sublime Point Lookout is a steep hike, but it offers a panoramic view of the entire Wollongong area.

For bike rentals in Wollongong, visit Trek Bicycle or Wollongong Bike Hub .

Wollongong has two beaches right in the city center.

North Wollongong Beach is an amazing place for swimming, sunbathing, and learning how to surf.

If you’ve never learned to surf but always wanted to try, the waves here are small and easy so it’s a great place to learn.

There are a couple of surf schools with experienced local instructors who can teach you the basics.

Pines Surfing Academy is located right on North Wollongong Beach.

Wollongong Surf

The nearby Mount Kiera is one of the best things to see in Wollongong.

Incredibly, this seaside city has its own mountain, so hikers and lovers of the outdoors will not be disappointed here!

The Mount Kiera Ring Track is a 5.5km loop that trails around the mountain. The walk takes between 3 and 5 hours depending on your fitness level.

Visit the official NSW National Parks website for more detailed information.

If you’re not up for hiking, you can also drive to the top of Mount Kiera for an amazing lookout point over the landscape.

For more hiking opportunities, check out these awesome walks in the Royal National Park just up the road. It’s only a 30-40 minute drive from Wollongong to the Royal National Park, making it an amazing excursion from the city.

Those looking to explore nature without going as far as Mount Kiera can visit Puckey’s Estate, a nature reserve between North Beach and the next town north of Wollongong, Fairy Meadow.

Mout Kiera is only about a 15-minute drive away from the city centre, but Puckey’s Estate is around 5 minutes away. You can even walk there from central Wollongong, as it lies right on the Cycleway.

Once you reach Puckey’s Estate, enjoy a couple of hours exploring the bush and walking, running, or biking along the woodland trails.

You can also emerge from the forest and walk along the inlet, or see the sand dunes that line the ocean.

What better to enjoy the coastal scenery of Wollongong than by jumping out of a plane?

Believe it or not, sky diving is actually one of the top things to do in Wollongong.

There is a very reputable sky diving company in Stuart Park near North Beach, and they are constantly taking adrenaline-seekers on jumps.

You can fully trust their equipment and their guides, but this activity is definitely not for the faint-hearted!

For a fun and insightful day trip from Wollongong, drive about 20 minutes away to the town of Berkeley, NSW, and check out the Nan Tien Temple .

This is actually the largest Buddhist Temple in the Southern Hemisphere, which is quite unexpected! Australia isn’t a Buddhist country, but this temple is extraordinary.

Nan Tien Temple includes a large main temple and courtyard, a towering pagoda, a gift shop, museum, tea room, classrooms and retreat spaces, and a landscaped garden.

So if you’re looking to see something majestic when you visit Wollongong, the Nan Tien Temple is the perfect place to go.

Australian summers can be scorching, so you’ll need to cool down on a sunny day.

After swimming in the sea, head into town and treat yourself to ice cream.

Here are some delicious ice cream shops in Wollongong that feel like absolute heaven on a hot day.

  • Normie’s Ice Cream and Gelato
  • Gelatissimo
  • Cold Rock Ice Creamery
  • Wendy’s Milk Bar
  • C9 Chocolate and Gelato

For more food adventures in addition to ice cream and dumplings, the Eat Street Markets is one of the most enjoyable Wollongong attractions.

Every Thursday evening, Crown Street fills up with food trucks selling everything from Indian curries to Greek wraps to Ethiopian dishes to handmade pasta to sugary churros and more.

Tea lights fill the trees along the street, and street musicians serenade you while you eat. This is definitely a must-have experience in Wollongong.

Another one of the most enjoyable Wollongong activities is going to the cinema.

Whether you’re looking for entertainment on a rainy day or something fun to do in the evening after dinner, the movie theatre in Wollongong is always showing the best new films.

Treat yourself to some popcorn and get cozy at Greater Union Cinemas !

The local rock pools are some of the most beautiful things to see when you visit Wollongong.

Whether you visit a rock pool at low tide to soak in the serenity, or at high tide to witness the wild waves tumbling over the edges of the pool, the rock pools are a truly beautiful addition to the Wollongong coastline.

You can swim laps if you’re feeling ambitious, or just splash around and dry out on the rocks afterwards.

There are some small and shallow rock pools up on the headland near the lighthouse, and there are deeper ones called the Gentlemen’s Baths located just to the south of North Beach. There is also an official swimming pool with lanes for swimming laps near Wollongong Harbour.

Both are incredible scenic spots, especially at sunrise or sunset. Visit a rock pool for a quick dip during the day or to just absorb the stunning coastal views.

Wollongong Rock Pools

Spending some time at City Beach is one of the best things to do in Wollongong.

This is the city’s biggest beach, stretching for 3.1 kilometers along the coast. There are lots of fun waves here for swimming, bodyboarding and surfing, and the water is a brilliant shade of sapphire on a nice day.

The sandy portion of the beach is super wide and long, so it’s perfect for lying out in the sun or going for a long walk.

On weekends, the beach gets quite lively with locals playing sports and blasting music.

There are also a few cafes and restaurants right next to the beach if you get hungry!

16. Eat Brekkie at a Local Cafe

Cafe culture is strong everywhere in Australia, and Wollongong has some particularly great cafes.

Most of them open early and close around 2 or 3 pm, so breakfast is the best time to visit.

Whether you’re in the mood for something savoury, like smashed avo on toast or a bacon and egg roll, or something sweet like an acai bowl, a homemade pastry, or yogurt with muesli and fruit, there is no shortage of delicious food options at the local cafes.

They all serve incredibly high-quality coffee as well.

Here are some of the top cafes in Wollongong:

This trendy cafe is located right on the North Beach Pavilion. Grab a smoothie and stroll along the beach!

Believe it or not, there are actually two mountains in Wollongong! This city has it all.

Mount Kembla is just south of Mount Kiera, and you can see both of them in the distance while driving into Wollongong.

Mount Kembla is a bit bigger than Mount Kiera, but it’s not as popular to climb.

However, it also has its own Ring Track that trails around the peak. This trail is marked as a Grade 4, meaning previous bushwalking experience is recommended.

The loop is 5.3 kilometres long and can take between 2 and 4 hours.

This is an amazing way to immerse yourself in nature and maybe see some local wildlife like echidnas or cockatoos. It’s also free!

Visit the NSW National Parks website for more information about the hike.

For anyone who likes beer, socializing, and an ocean view, head to the Illawarra Brewery .

This is the perfect place to come on a weekend afternoon, or on a weekday evening for some casual drinks and hearty pub food.

There are plenty of craft beers to choose from at the Illawarra Brewery, and they often have happy hours and theme nights on for guests.

You can also get fancy grazing boards to snack on while you sip.

In any coastal Australian town, sunrise is one of the most beautiful and pure times of the day.

The streets are quiet, the sky is colourful, and the atmosphere is promising.

One of the best things to do in Wollongong is to watch the sunrise at the lighthouse. There are actually two lighthouses in the city, but the biggest one is located on Flagstaff Hill . The smaller one is Wollongong Breakwater Lighthouse, located in Wollongong Harbour.

Up on Flagstaff Hill, you get incredible sweeping views of the entire coastline. You can also see the mountains in the background. The sunrise from Wollongong Harbour isn’t bad either, so you can pick your spot.

This is the best spot to see the sunrise, so try to get up early one day and witness it.

Watching A Wollongong Sunrise By The Ocean Is The Best Way To Start The Day.

19 Incredible things to do in Wollongong that you shouldn't miss

19 Incredible things to do in Wollongong that you shouldn't miss

Wollongong is the third largest city in NSW, so it’s no surprise that there are lots of incredible things to do in the area. Many of the top places to visit are all about the beautiful nature, both in the city and the surrounds. However, if you like your culture, there are some fabulous temples and not one, but two striking lighthouses.

With spectacular beaches, dramatic waterfalls, hiking trails with jaw dropping views, and some of the best wild swimming spots in NSW, you really are spoilt for choice.

Here are all the best things to do in Wollongong that you just can’t miss.

Things to do in Wollongong

Table of Contents

1. Swim at the bottom of Kellys Falls 2. Hit the beach 3. Try the local beer at Five Barrel Brewery 4. Enjoy the stunning views from the Brokers Nose Trail 5. Walk across the Sea Cliff Bridge 6. Catch a sunset at the old heritage lighthouse 7. Relax at the gorgeous Maddens Falls 8. Be transported to Asia at the Nan Tien Temple 9. Have a picnic at the Illawarra Rhododendron Garden 10. Take in the views from Stanwell Tops 11. Hike up to Sublime Point Lookout 12. Grab a coffee at the cool Timbermill Cafe 13. Relax at Lake Illawarra 14. Wander through the Botanic Gardens 15. Taste the local cider 16. Whale Watch at Flagstaff Point Lighthouse 17. Walk through the stunning rainforest at Macquarie Pass 18. Visit the Illawarra Fly 19. Walk through the rainforest in Minnamurra

The best things to do in Wollongong

1. take on the adventurous trail to the bottom of kellys falls.

Kellys Falls is a beauty, but you don’t really get to appreciate it from the top because there aren’t any great viewpoints - you can get a distant partial view but it really deserves more than that! To see the falls in all its glory you need to walk down to the base, where you can take a dip right underneath the waterfall.

Walk to the bottom of Kelly Falls - THings to do in Wollongong

There are a few ways of getting down there, although none are signposted, and we recently found a much easier route than the one most people use. It only takes 10 minutes to get down and it’s just 640m return! It isn’t on a maintained path (no path to the base is maintained) and does require one short scramble but it’s not a difficult one.

Walk to the bottom of Kelly Falls

Once you’re down you can enjoy the uninterrupted views of the falls, and I’d definitely recommend bringing your swimmers!

We have a step by step guide on how to get to the bottom of Kellys Falls here .

2. Hit the beach

You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to beaches in Wollongong. North Wollongong Beach and City Beach are both great and right in town, but our favourite in the area has to be Stanwell Park Beach.

Stanwell Park Beach is a 30 minute drive from the city, but it’s very close to the Sea Cliff Bridge (five minutes away) if you’re approaching from that direction.

Stanwell Beach - Things to do in Wollongong

It sits between two picturesque headlands which gives it a lovely secluded feel. It has a more wild vibe than the city beaches, and whilst it’s still popular, it doesn’t get crowded.

There’s also plenty of free parking which is always a massive bonus.

Wollongong Beach

Wollongong Beach

Bulli Beach

Bulli Beach

Another great option and closer at just a 15 minute drive is Bulli Beach. The long stretch of sand never seems to feel busy and it’s very picturesque.

3. Try the local craft beer at Five Barrel Brewing

Craft beer enthusiasts will be in for a treat because not only is the beer great, but you can get tasting paddles with up to 8 different kinds. There are 12 to choose from and the staff are really friendly and will help you decide what to go for.

I’m not a beer drinker so ordered the cider but they convinced me to try a little of their raspberry sour flavour and it turns out there are a few beers I do actually like!

The Five Barrel Brewery - Things to do in Wollongong

I would never have ordered that myself so it was really nice that they gave me a free taste with no pressure to order any. Joe loved the Red IPA.

The vibe is also great with good music and both indoor and outdoor seating. Foodwise it’s all burgers which we didn’t try but looked good (food is Thursday to Sunday only).

4. Enjoy a spectacular view without the crowds at the Brokers Nose

The Brokers Nose is one of our favourite hikes in Wollongong and offers the chance to experience views as beautiful as those from Mount Keira Lookout, but without the crowds.

The trail is not signposted and you’d never think it was there if you didn’t know about it ahead of time. It’s a fairly easy 4.6km trail that does have some uphill walking, but it’s never too steep.

Hike to Brokers Nose in Wollongong

Much of the walk is through the shady forest, some of which feels wonderfully jungly and you really wouldn’t imagine you are about to come out at a dramatic view!

You can see various beaches, Wollongong city, the lighthouse, Port Kembla and lots of dense bushland. We got the whole summit to ourselves, despite hiking on a sunny Saturday.

Hike to Brokers Nose - Things to do in Wollongong

We’ve got all the details including the coordinates for where to start the trail in this post .

5. Walk across the iconic Sea Cliff Bridge

If you’re driving down from Sydney, make sure you take the Grand Pacific Drive to Wollongong. It’s a longer and slower route than the M1, but it is a lot more picturesque and will take you via the stunning Sea Cliff Bridge.

Driving over the bridge is a must, but it’s always over in flash. We’d recommend parking at the southern end and walking over it to take in the stunning views. It’s only 800m long and there’s a dedicated pavement which shields you from the cars driving past.

Walk over the Seacliff Bridge - Things to do in Wollongong

The walk allows you to get some great photos and to take your time soaking up the views.

If you want to see the bridge from below, there’s a walkway down to the sea wall from the northern end of the bridge. The waves can be huge around here on a choppy day and it was a bit of a spectacle in itself to sit and watch them.

Walk across the Seacliff Bridge

6. Catch a sunset from the old heritage lighthouse

Wollongong has a number of spectacular sunset spots and one of our favourites is from the old heritage lighthouse.

Whilst everyone congregates around the newer Flagstaff Point Lighthouse we head down to the old Breakwater Lighthouse built in 1871. It’s no longer in use and was luckily saved from demolition in the 70’s.

Sunset at Wollongong Lighthouse

There are plenty of rocks to sit on and watch as the sun slowly sets, illuminating the lighthouse and surrounds. It’s a timeless spot and somewhere that always feels calm and peaceful.

You can park on Endeavour Drive and then walk just one minute over to the rocks, which is our favourite place to perch, as well as a lovely photography spot.

Things to do in Wollongong - Sunset at the lighthouse

7. Relax at the gorgeous Maddens Falls

Maddens Falls is one of our favourite waterfalls near Wollongong and you can reach it easily on a short 600m (each way) walking trail. The main viewpoint offers a fabulous look at the multi tiered waterfall, which was in full force on our recent visit.

However, we’ve also visited when there was a really low flow and it was still gorgeous (you can see the images with less water in the post linked below).

Relax at Maddens Falls - Things to do in Wollongong

If you want to see it from another angle you can cross over the top of the waterfall and head down to the next tier. I fell in love with this spot, we got it all to ourselves, and it had such a great feeling about it. I can’t really explain why, but it reminded me of Kakadu.

We’ve got all of our tips for visiting the falls and accessing the various different vantage points in this post .

8. Be transported to Asia at the Nan Tien Temple

When you need a little taste of Southeast Asia without leaving NSW, Nan Tien Temple is the place to head. When you climb up the steps and look out over the rooftops you really do feel like you could be in Bangkok.

It’s the largest Buddhist Temple in the Southern Hemisphere and it has both a peaceful and welcoming vibe. We loved it and the way it transported us back to past travels.

Nan Tien Temple - Things to do in Wollongong

If you’ve ever driven through the area and seen a huge pagoda on the hillside this is your chance to go inside and perhaps make a wish when sounding the wishing bell.

You can wander the main temple and the gardens and even stop for a vegetarian meal at the very well regarded cafe.

As with any Buddhist temple anywhere in the world, it’s important to dress respectively, covering knees and shoulders. If you forget a cover up you can purchase sarongs.

Nan Tien Temple

General entry to the temple is free of charge, and they often have classes and other events on, so it’s worth checking their website ahead of time to see what’s on when you plan to visit.

9. Have a picnic at the Illawarra Rhododendron Garden

The Illawarra Rhododendron Garden is gorgeous it’s so incredibly peaceful and you can feel yourself start to relax immediately.

There are picturesque ponds full of lillies and waddling ducks, and an array of beautiful plants and trees. It’s backed by the escarpment which gives it a lovely secluded feel even though the garden is actually fairly large.

Picnic at the Rhododendron Garden - Wollongong

We haven’t yet seen it in spring when all the Rhododendrons are in bloom, so I can only imagine how spectacular that would be.

It’s the perfect place to bring a picnic blanket and feast. There are plenty of nooks and crannies to find your own little piece of paradise and you’ll often see painters and wedding shoots around which only adds to the happy vibes.

Rhododendron Garden - Things to do in Wollongong

The garden is free of charge but the car park is $5. Alternatively you could find a spot on a nearby residential street. The garden is currently only open Tuesdays, weekends and public holidays.

10. Admire the view at Stanwell Tops

The view from Stanwell Tops is magnificent. It offers sweeping views over the ocean, Stanwell Park Beach and even the Sea Cliff Bridge.

We’ve stopped here so many times and it never loses its wow factor. It’s especially exciting if you’re up there when the hang gliders are taking off!

Stanwell Tops - Things to. doin Wollongong

There is a huge green lawn overlooking the view which makes the perfect place to sit and relax. It’s another lovely picnic spot and if it’s a sunny day you can pick up a treat from the ice cream van too!

Don’t forget to look out for sea eagles as they regularly glide overhead.

11. Work for that view at the Sublime Point Lookout

Yes you can drive right up to Sublime Point Lookout, but where’s the fun in that?! The best way to feel like you’ve really earnt the view is to walk up through the forest along the Sublime Point Track.

It’s a short walk at just 2.7km return, but it’s virtually all uphill. First on wooden steps and then on a series of eight ladders.

The walk to Sublime Point - Best things to do in Wollongong

The rainforest is gorgeous with lots of Cabbage tree palms and huge ferns, and you’ll get the odd peek out to the ocean which helps you feel like you’re making good headway.

The view from the top is outstanding with beach after beach, rainforest, and of course Wollongong itself. It is a must do, but if you really don’t fancy the walk, it’s well worth driving up to see.

The walk to Sublime Point in Wollongong

In terms of difficulty it is steep for much of the way, but it’s nice and shady and there are plenty of benches scattered along the track for a break.

12. Fuel up at the cool Timbermill Cafe

The Timbermill Cafe in Bulli is the place to head when you’re looking for a caffeine fix. It’s an outdoor cafe set in the Timbermill Studios and it has a really relaxed, artsy vibe. The tables and chairs are rustic and there are pot plants everywhere, which is always a win in my book!

Have the coffee at Timber Mill

The coffee and food were really good and the staff are incredibly friendly. It’s also open a bit later than the majority of cafes in Wollongong on a weekend which is why we happily ended up stumbling upon it.

13. Relax at Lake Illawarra

Lake Illawarra is huge at over 9.5km long - you definitely won’t have a problem finding your own secluded spot! There’s everything on offer here from swimming, to boating on the lake, or taking a stroll or cycle along the Lake Illawarra Art Trail.

Sunset at Lake Illawarra - THings to do in Wollongong

There are also plenty of green spaces to lay down a picnic blanket or use one of the benches. Personally we love the lake at sunset, it’s so peaceful to sit and watch it from the end of the jetty.

Lake Illawarra

14. Soak up the tranquility of the Wollongong Botanic Garden

The botanic garden is the place to come for some gorgeous greenery that is just five minutes from the city centre. There are lots of different gardens to take in; including jungle, cactus, palm, bush tucker and the rose garden.

Not everything is in bloom year round but there’s always plenty to see, no matter what time of year you come. We loved the cactus garden which had such an amazing collection of different succulents from the Americas and Africa.

Wollongong Botanic Garden - Things to do in Wollongong

You could spend a lot of time wandering the various different displays on offer, or visit many times taking in a few sections at a time.

The gardens are open daily and free of charge. There are several different car parks you can use and we’d recommend parking on the eastern side (just off Madoline Street) for easiest access.

15. Taste the local cider

Darkes Cider is located less than a 30 minute drive from Wollongong and just opposite Maddens Falls. It’s well worth the short drive over to taste some of their award winning cider, or maybe go apple picking in the orchard (seasonal).

Darkes Cider - Best things to do in Wollongong

Normally you can do a proper cider tasting experience, but currently due to Covid you can buy a few different ciders from the shop and then sit on the hay barrels in the garden overlooking the orchards and conduct your own tasting (normal tastings are expected to resume in the next few months).

Bottles of cider are $6 individually, or you can buy a pack of four different flavours for $22. You can also buy a cheese platter to go with it, or something from the food truck.

Things to do in Wollongong - Darkes Cider

We thought the Howler Cider was delicious and ended up taking some home with us. You can also buy a variety of jams, sauces, vinegars and more, as well as non alcoholic cider.

16. Stroll through glorious rainforest on the areas best short walk

The 750m walk (each way) along the Cascades Trail in Macquarie Pass National Park is a delight from the very first step. The rainforest is just breathtaking with an abundance of hanging vines, knotted roots, fig trees and more.

The dense foliage keeps it lovely and shady so it’s perfect for hot days when other trails are more exposed. The easy and well maintained path is flat for the majority of the way as you walk along the crystal clear creek to Cascade Falls.

Cascades Trail in Macquarie Pass

The waterfall is gorgeous and the water deep enough for a plunge pool experience if you are so inclined. The water is generally very cold but it will definitely make you feel alive!

It takes 30 minutes to get to from Wollongong.

Things to do in Wollongong - Macquarie Pass

17. Look out for whales from the Flagstaff Point Lighthouse

The Flagstaff Point Lighthouse is a place that everyone visits when they come to Wollongong. You can’t go inside the lighthouse, but it sits on a lovely spot on Flagstaff Hill, and you’ll see many people picnicking beside it on sunny weekends.

Whale watching at Flagstaff Point

However, our favourite thing to do here is to walk just to right of the lighthouse to the viewing area which looks over the ocean. Between May and October (but most sightings are June and July) you can look out for the migrating Humpback whales which pass by this way each year.

The view is expansive and offers a fabulous vantage point to watch for these gentle giants.

18. Get up in the tree tops at the Illawarra Fly

The Illawarra Fly is a little distance from Wollongong at a 50 minute drive but if you can spare the time it is definitely worth it. Walking up amongst the trees on the treetop walkways is a delight for adults and children alike.

As well as incredible views out to the ocean and rolling hills, you can also look down into the rainforest. We spend a lot of time walking in forests looking up, but never normally have the chance to look in from above.

Illawarra Fly - Things to do in Wollongong

We had the added delight of being serenaded by two lyrebirds on our visit which really added to the atmosphere.

If you’re looking for something a little less sedate you can also fly between the trees on Australia’s highest zipline.

You can save money on your tickets if you book in advance with Experience Oz - they are currently $2.50 cheaper than if you turn up on the day. You can check their availability by clocking on the button below.

If you are wanting something more adventurous, then Experience Oz also offer a discount on the Zip Line package at the Illawarra Fly.

At the time of writing, the standard price is $75 when you turn up on the day, but Experience Oz are offering it for $67.50 when you book in advance. Click below to check their current availability.

We’ve written a detailed (unsponsored) guide to our experience at the Illawarra Fly here .

19. Explore the ancient Minnamurra Rainforest

Just over a half an hour drive from Wollongong you’ll find the incredible Minnamurra Rainforest. It’s an absolutely beautiful patch of pristine rainforest, full of hundreds of different plant species and lots of wildlife too, we saw many lyrebirds.

Minnamurra Rainforest - Things to do in Wollongong

You can explore the ancient forest on a series of paved walkways, boardwalk and suspension bridges. The short 1.6km Rainforest Loop walk is an easy trail that showcases a lot of the spectacular forest.

If you don’t mind taking on a steep walk you can also visit the gorgeous Minnamurra Falls which is 4.2km return and well worth the climb. Whilst the path is very steep, it’s paved and has plenty of benches for resting along the way.

Walking through the Minnamurra Rainforest

There is a $12 parking fee for Minnamurra Rainforest unless you have an NSW parks pass.

Where to stay in Wollongong

Southview guest house.

Southview Guest House is a home away from home, located close to Bulli Beach. You can opt for a room or a suite, both look lovely, but the suite has a kitchen which makes it perfect if you don’t want to eat out for every meal.

You can check out the rave reviews on:

The Beach House North

The Beach House, located a couple of kilometres from the city centre, is perfect for families or friends as it has two bedrooms. There’s a full kitchen for self catering and the modern decor is stylish and comfortable. It’s just over the road from the beach.

15 Best Things to Do in Wollongong (Australia)

An hour south of Sydney , Wollongong is a coastal city bursting with beaches, magnificent natural scenery and inspiration for days out.

The city is jostled onto a natural coastal plain by the sandstone Illawara Escarpment, climbing to several hundred metres just inland.

A few attractions on this list take advantage of the widescreen views from the escarpment, while the Grand Pacific Drive meanders along the coastline and can leave you lost for words.

There are 17 surf beaches open in Wollongong in summer, all with free parking on the foreshore, and if the Pacific waves are too much the city has a few saltwater pools right on the seafront.

To mix things up you can head off to museums, zoos and an excellent water park, or retreat to a Buddhist temple complex or rich botanic garden.

1. Grand Pacific Drive

Grand Pacific Drive

Wollongong is on a 140-kilometre coastal route, setting off from Sydney’s CBD and finishing up in beautiful Shoalhaven.

The route wends its way through the Royal National Park (second-oldest on the planet) past cliffs, cinematic beaches, tracts of coastal rainforest and up to countless places where you can step out of the car and take in the scenery.

One stretch sure to take your breath away is the Sea Cliff Bridge (2005), nearly half a kilometre long and snaking with contours of the sandstone cliff-face.

You can get out and walk or ride on the parallel paths, and there are lookouts on the cliff-tops so you can capture this manmade wonder and its Pacific backdrop from above.

2. Wollongong Botanic Garden

Wollongong Botanic Garden

In the highest part of Wollongong, on the delightful grounds of Gleniffer Brae Manor House is the city’s world-class botanic garden.

This is all set along a creek, feeding a small lake, and has important collections of native and exotic plants.

To name a small few, there’s a palm garden, rose garden, rainforest collection dryland garden, succulent collection and a garden for flowering trees and shrubs.

In the palm garden alone are more than 800, rare and endangered species, while the rose garden boasts all sorts of varieties and cultivars, from Hybrid Tea to Floribunda.

The Towri Bush Tucker Garden gives you an insight into the many plant species used in Aboriginal culture for food, shelter and medicine.

The Wollongong Botanic Garden is free to enter, has a gigantic children’s playground and puts on a whole programme of activities and events for the local community and visitors, ranging from guided walks to cinema screenings.

3. Wollongong Harbour and Lighthouses

Wollongong Harbour and Lighthouses

One of the prettiest sights along the coast is Wollongong Harbour, on a basin first dredged and carved out to ship coal from local mines in the 1840s.

Now heritage-listed, the harbour is a point of departure for fishing charters, and combines natural and manmade beauty.

At the eastern edge of the harbour’s mouth is the Wollongong Breakwater Lighthouse, built in 1872 when coal shipping was at its peak and decommissioned in 1974. Roosted atop Flagstaff Hill to the south is the operating Wollongong Head Lighthouse (1936), with fluted walls and a range of 19 nautical miles.

In the 1880s a concealed gun emplacement was built on the hill to protect the harbour.

The three guns you see today are the original 68-pounders, cast in 1861.

4. Nan Tien Temple

Nan Tien Temple

Berkeley, a southern suburb of Wollongong, is the setting for the largest Buddhist temple in the southern hemisphere.

Designed like a Chinese palace with flying eaves, Nan Tien Temple was built using modern techniques in the early 1990s.

The complex is embedded in landscaped gardens on a peaceful hillside and incorporates two vast prayer halls with Tibetan-style architecture, as well as meeting rooms, a museum, accommodation and a restaurant.

In the courtyards are serene, Japanese-style gardens.

You can come to be dazzled by the architecture, enjoy the tranquil grounds and browse an exhibition.

The temple also hosts all sorts of retreats and classes, for mindful doodling, meditation, Buddhism and Tai Chi.

5. Jamberoo Action Park

Jamberoo Action Park

There’s a lot to love about this water park in Jamberoo, a short drive south of Wollongong.

The setting is a big part of that, on steep topography, using the slopes for its many gravity-fed rides.

The headline attractions at Jamberoo Action Park are too long to list, but a structure that catches the eye right away is the humungous cone of Perfect Storm.

This ride has outrageous production values for a water slide, plunging you into a giant vortex surrounded by darkness except for special effects like lightning flashes and thunder cracks.

Listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for the world’s largest spider sculpture is Funnel Web where you top speeds of 30km/h on a four-person raft.

There’s lots for smaller children to get up to, at spots like Banjo’s Billabong, four storeys of slides, climbing features, water cannons, cranks and valves.

6. Symbio Wildlife Park

Symbio Wildlife Park

Posted atop the Illawarra Escarpment near Stanwell Park Beach, Symbio Wildlife Park is a family-run zoo in 16 acres of pristine landscaped gardens.

This is a place to get up close to typical Australian animals like koalas, kangaroos, wallabies and dingoes, but there are also lots of exotic species, from red pandas to ring-tailed lemurs, meerkats and even cheetahs.

A variety of safe and humane close encounters are available, as simple as buying animal feed for the park’s farmyard species, or feeding kangaroos and wallabies or cuddling koalas.

There’s also a day-long schedule of presentations for meerkats, dingoes, Tasmanian devils, cheetahs and those koalas.

7. Science Space

Science Space Wollongong

The prime science education centre for New South Wales is part of that new generation of museums where kids can learn by getting involved.

Along those lines there are more than 100 quirky and engrossing exhibits on anything from light to electricity, dinosaurs and nanotechnology.

Central to any visit is a show at “NSW’s best planetarium”, which has a super-crisp 4K projection system, able to blast off for a tour of the universe or descend to unseen ocean depths.

There’s also lots of razzle-dazzle at the Illawarra Coal Science Theatre, which puts on interactive and occasionally explosive live science experiments.

8. North Wollongong Beach

North Wollongong Beach

The next beach up from Wollongong Harbour is the city’s favourite place to bathe or surf in the Pacific.

This is the only local beach that is patrolled by lifeguards all year, and has a lot of features and amenities for families.

There are rock pools, picnic areas, cafes, big grassy spaces and a playground an easy walk away at Stuart Park.

As is the norm for Wollongong, all the facilities are kept sparkling clean, and running behind is a continuous multiuse track, which we’ll talk about later.

South of the beach you can hit the water and not have to worry about the currents at the Continental Pool.

This is one of a series of outdoor saltwater pools along the Wollongong coast.

9. Port Kembla Beach

Port Kembla Beach

About ten kilometres south of Wollongong is a bay that is special, even by Wollongong’s high standards.

Port Kembla Beach is fringed by a low cliff, covered in vegetation, and at the south end is a set of rock pools revealed at low tide.

Port Kembla beach has real history too, and has been frequented by surfers since the beginning of the 20th century.

The surf club here was founded in 1910, and is based on the high fore dune at the north end of the beach.

Also on the northern rocks is an Olympic-sized saltwater pool for swimmers, pumped with new water every day.

Follow the coastline to the headland and you’ll be at Breakwater Battery, built in 1939 to defend Port Kembla against submarines.

10. Minnamurra Rainforest Centre

Minnamurra Rainforest Centre

Head for the eastern tip of the Budderoo National Park on Tourist Drive 9 and you’ll be at a rare remnant of the primeval rainforest that once covered most of the Illawarra region.

There’s a newly updated visitor centre that reopened in 2020, bedded in a sandstone canyon where you can witness the multitude of species that flourish in this habitat.

This can be done on a 1.6-kilometre loop, weaving through the canyon along suspension bridges and over raised boardwalks.

It will take about an hour to complete this trail, stopping every so often to appreciate the waterfalls and lush vegetation and spot animals like Australian water dragons, king parrots, swamp wallabies and lyrebirds.

11. Wattamolla Beach

Wattamolla Beach

A slice of paradise up the coast in the Royal National Park, Wattamolla Beach is worth every minute of the journey.

Tucked a couple of hundred metres inland, between Martin Head and Providential Point, is a cove, golden sandy beach and a lagoon fed by a waterfall.

The sand extends along a bar, way back into the lagoon, so you’ll have plenty of room to yourself.

There’s safe swimming in the lagoon’s peaceful waters, and you can have a bite in the ample shade of the cabbage tree palms.

The waterfall is seasonal, and people hike up to sit on the ledge and take in the view of the lagoon, beach and ocean beyond.

12. Scenic Lookouts

Bald Hill Lookout

Always on the western horizon, the Illawarra Escarpment gives you magnificent views down the slope to Wollongong’s communities, the Pacific coastline and the deep forest in between.

Like a balcony a few hundred metres in from the coast, the escarpment has a long line of lookouts: Starting in the north, just past the Sea Cliff Bridge, you’ve got Bald Hill at Stanwell Tops and the Southern Gateway Centre Lookout and Sublime Point Lookout, both at Bulli Tops.

Backing Wollongong’s CBD is Mount Keira, rising to more than 460 metres and on a 5.5-kilometre looped trail.

Finally Mount Kembla dominates the historic mining village of the same name, and affords knockout panoramas of the coastline and Lake Illawarra.

13. Wollongong to Thirroul Bike Track

Thirroul Coastline

Starting at Belmore Basin close to Flagstaff Hill and its historic lighthouse, you can make a very scenic 15-kilometre ride north to Thirroul on a designated track.

This route sticks to the coastline, which oscillates along a chain of sandy bays, including Wollongong North Beach, but also Brighton Beach, Bulli Beach and Sandon Point Beach.

The way is paved so is also suited to rollerskaters and skateboarders, and is great for families as there are almost no roads to deal with.

You can take your time and enjoy the coastline, and the constant views of the Illawarra Escarpment rearing up to the west.

There are cafes and restaurant all along the route, and you can pause at any time to picnic, feel the sand between your toes or swim in a saltwater pool.

14. Australian Motorlife Museum

Australian Motorlife Museum

The second-largest motoring museum in Australia is right here in the Illawarra tourism area and gives you a complete summary of the development of consumer technology between 1880 and 1950. So as well as some extremely rare motorcars you’ll find motorbikes, petrol pumps, radios, gramophones, typewriters, tools, telephones, lawnmowers and a great deal more.

Naturally the museum’s vehicles inspire a lot of interest, as there’s a 1904 Australian-built Innes, and one of only two surviving motorcycles by Brisbane manufacturer David Spencer, from 1906. The museum has such a quantity of vintage appliances that it was able to loan lots of items for the production Baz Luhrmann’s Great Gatsby (2013).

15. Illawarra Light Railway Museum

Illawarra Light Railway Museum

Operating a narrow-gauge and miniature railway, this museum preserves Illawarra industrial history, as well as light railway heritage in general.

You couldn’t pick a better outing if you have a train-obsessed child! On site are railway artefacts from the region, like signal box, the entire Yallah station building, a fettlers’ shed and a workshop and carriage restoration shed.

The museum looks after a big line-up of steam and diesel locomotives, as well as several passenger cars and a variety of other rolling stock.

You can also check out a host of stationary engines, boilers, generators, compressors, pumps and winches.

The museum is open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, but operating days are every second Sunday of the month.

The 11 best things to do in Wollongong

Wollongong combines the best of the outdoors with a burgeoning cultural scene to deliver activities and attractions to suit everyone from the nature lover and adventurer to the refined diner and art lover, with plenty more thrown in for the kids.

Attractions

Nan Tien Temple , which means paradise of the south in Chinese, is the largest Buddhist temple in the Southern Hemisphere. Since its opening in 1995, the temple continues to draw a steady stream of tourists, intent on walking through the serene gardens and admiring the sheer scale of the temple. Dine at the onsite café for authentic Asian cuisine and a steaming hot cup of tea before you hit the road.

Standing proudly on the northern side of the headland is the historic Wollongong Breakwater Lighthouse . Constructed from wrought iron in 1871, the local heritage site was restored in 2002 but has been inactive since 1974. Not to be confused with its slightly more modern neighbour, the electricity-powered Wollongong Head Lighthouse to its right, was built from reinforced concrete in 1936 and is still in operation today.

Take a self-guided or host-guided walk around the winding paths of the Wollongong Botanic Gardens . There are a large variety of gardens to explore, from the rainforest and the flowering trees and shrubs to the succulents and the Australian open forest and more. There is a playground to keep the kids entertained with maze and climbing net, as well as plenty of green spaces to relax in.

Views don’t get much better than the one you’ll find at Bald Hill Lookout in Stanwell Tops at the northern tip of Wollongong. Not only will you see expansive views of the Pacific Ocean and the iconic Sea Cliff Bridge, but you’ll also watch hang-gliders and paragliders launch themselves off the edge to glide over coastline. The lookout is an internationally acclaimed area for the sport, and is the very spot where Australian aeronautical pioneer Lawrence Hargrave first flew his box kite in 1894.

Wollongong and its surrounding suburbs are home to some of the coast’s best beaches. If it’s a surf you seek, Sandon Point and Windang Island are two of the best spots in Wollongong and the winter months deliver the most consistent swells.

For those more interested in swimming, relaxing on the sand, or picnicking in a reserve, then head to either Wollongong City Beach or North Wollongong Beach. Nearby Stanwell Park Beach, Coledale Beach and the rock pools at Austinmer Beach are also great alternatives. Swimmers can also get in some early morning laps at the Continental Pool right on Wollongong beach.

There are plenty of hiking trails to explore around Wollongong, but the Sublime Point walking track  is one of the most iconic. The steep 45-minute climb to the top will reward you with far-reaching views over the city and the Pacific Ocean.

If you’re itching to throw a line in the water head to Wollongong City Beach and fish around the boulders or off the rock platform for tailor, salmon, bream and drummer. The breakwall in Wollongong Harbour is another great option.

Once they’ve had enough of the beach, kids can burn off all that extra energy at MagicZoom . The indoor family play centre is kitted out with soft play, climbing structures, slides and an arcade.

Flip Out  is another high-energy activity guaranteed to get your child’s approval. Several of the highlights at the indoor trampoline park include the foam pit, wall running, a human pinball trampoline and the basketball trampoline court.

Take little ones to the Early Start Discovery Space  to visit Australia’s only dedicated children’s museum. The life-sized exhibits provide interactive, play-focused experiences that include crawling inside a giant stomach, designing and building a house, acting on the stage, crawling through a cave and much more.

As the fourth largest city in NSW, behind Sydney , Newcastle and the Central Coast , you’d expect nothing less than a stellar bar and restaurant offering.

Order a quality cup of coffee, a delicious brunch spread and watch the surf roll in over North Wollongong Beach as you sit back and soak in the coastal vibes at Diggies . The seasonal menu is chock full with mouth-watering breakfast favourites, including fluffy buttermilk pancakes served with fresh strawberries, maple syrup and optional additions of sweet ricotta and crispy bacon.

You’ll find Lee and Me café inside a charming old heritage terrace house. Cosy on up alongside the fireplace in winter, soak in the sun on the outdoor terrace with friends in summer or order from the takeaway menu for days when you can’t linger. Try the Prana sticky chai latte with steamed milk and honey, the porridge topped with roasted apple and cinnamon crumble or the pork toastie stuffed with slow cooked pork, relish, cheese and pickles.

The Brewery is the home of Illawarra’s craft beer and also a top notch place to grab a hearty feed. Try the Big Brewery Burger with Black Angus beef, Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, caramelised onions all drizzled with chipotle aioli and a side of fries. They also have a menu jam-packed with tasty quick bites, a selection of mains on the a la carte menu and a kids menu for the little ones.

The Scarborough Hotel  is well worth the 25-minute drive outside of Wollongong to experience the clifftop beer garden with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean. Sit on the grass, soak up the sun and dine on your choice of share plates, seafood, hearty modern Australian mains or classic pub fare such as the market fish and chips or cheese burger and chips.

For a truly exceptional meal you can’t go past Babyface Kitchen on Keira Street in Wollongong. Dine with a group and splash out on the set menu or tasting menu to ensure you get to experience as many dishes as possible. Order the Moreton Bay bug schnitzel in salt and pepper sauce and a small of the smoked cauliflower with cream, barley and miso butter sauce.

The award-winning fine dining restaurant Caveau , partners with producers, wine makers and artisans to bring patrons a meal made with the finest organic, sustainable and locally-sourced products with a decidedly native Australian flair. Think wallaby tail and potato pie, barramundi cooked over smoking paperbark and lemon aspen custard with native thyme meringues drizzled in honey.

Going to Wollongong: Sydney’s Sassy Southern Sibling

Explore Sydney’s southern sister city, Wollongong or the ‘Gong’ and discover a vibrant, youthful, picturesque Australian gem.

travel to wollongong

While Sydney steals the crown jewels of Australian tourism, not far to its South lies another extremely stylish, exuberantly vibrant and eclectically trendy city – Wollongong, or the ‘Gong’.

Lying just over 80 km south of Sydney, Wollongong is a jewel in its own right. Growing by the coast, sandwiched between the Illawarra escarpment and the Tasman Sea.

It is the third largest city in the state of New South Wales after senior sibling Sydney and coaling cousin Newcastle, and the tenth largest overall in the country.

In its beach-side, littoral existence, ensconced in sun, sea and sand, Wollongong is a sassy embodiment of perfect Australiana.

Its moniker remembers the original Aboriginal clans that lived here and is said to be derived from the Dharawal name ‘woolyungah’ meaning five islands – which can be spotted even today from a good vantage point.

Murals at city centre. Photo by Ayan Adak

The first Europeans to have come to this part were famous English navigators, George Bass and Matthew Flinders (the latter being credited with giving the nation its name) who were exploring the coast from Port Jackson by the sea in 1796 – less than a decade after the establishment of the colony in 1788.

As Sydney began to grow, the region attracted cedar cutters and then graziers, while the discovery of coal in 1797 by George Bass gave early indications of economic activity that would power Wollongong’s economic heart for decades thereafter. Yet, it was not until 1942 that it was declared a city of its own.

Today, Greater Wollongong stretches all the way from Stanwell Park in the North to Shellharbour in the South. It stretches over 60km and includes an energetic university, a botanic garden larger than Sydney’s flagship garden, an Australian seaport and one of Australia’s largest industrial complexes in Port Kembla.

With its long sandy beaches interspersed with quaint suburbs, brilliant hiking and cycling trails, reserves and gardens, Wollongong is a beautiful city with stylish suburbs. There are lots to keep one busy for days if not weeks, irrespective of age.

Nonetheless here are some of Wollongong’s top draws:

Paraglider from Bald Hill lookout.

Bald Hill Lookout, Stanwell Tops

Despite its severely unromantic name, Bald Hill is perhaps the most picturesque of many lookouts scattered across Wollongong. Overlooking the indigo waters of the Tasman Sea, the lookout peers below at the township of Stanwell Tops and an eponymous beach that has seen a lot of aviation history.

It was here on these hills and on the beach that legendary Australian engineer and aviator, Lawrence Hargrave perfected his box-kites and aviation theories that would, later on, inspire the Wright Brothers to invent the aeroplane.

The driveway to the lookout, named after Lawrence, and a plaque at Bald Hill pay obeisance to this pioneer, who never patented his works so that they could be used by other scientists around the world to further innovation.

Interestingly, Bald Hill today is a hub for hang-gliders and paragliders and a visit on a weekend will guarantee the sight of colourful gliders floating like tinsel almost meditatively against bright skies and blue seas.

Come winter, the lookout becomes an excellent vantage point to seek Humpback whales as well, that travel through these waters to the north in the calving season.

Also visible is Wollongong’s contribution to the world of bridges – the Seacliff Bridge, an engineering marvel along the Grand Pacific Drive that snakes and swerves along the steep cliffs, leading to Wollongong City.

If you like hiking, you can walk across the Seacliff Bridge and soak in the amazing sea breeze. Alternately, not far from the Bald Hill lookout is the Otford lookout, from where commences an amazing but long walk in the Royal National Park to the Figure 8 pools – tidal rockpools that look like, guess what, the number 8!

Nan Tien Temple. Photo by Ayan Adak

The Nan Tien Temple

Irrespective of caste, creed, cult or culture, the Nan Tien temple should be on your must-see list if you land in Wollongong or even Sydney.

Built by a Taiwanese Buddhist order in 1995, it is one of the largest Buddhist temples in the southern hemisphere and looks gigantic and impressive with its saffron-coloured sprawling roofs and an eight-storied pagoda that is visible from far as you drive on the hilly ridges entering Wollongong.

The Nan Tien temple oozes in peacefulness as you absorb the calmness of the temple precincts, while simultaneously feeling belittled in its huge courtyards.

Indulge in a bit of shnirin-yoku or nature-walking in the Japanese gardens, chuckle at the many children statues scattered all over the complex, push a heavy, wooden gong on the top of a scenic hill to resonate in its monastic timbre, or participate in tai-chi, meditation or calligraphy lessons to cleanse your soul and mind.

If anything, you can sit peacefully and look at the many Buddha Statues enshrined in the temple to ponder on your Ikigai.

Lake Illawarra. Photo by Ayan Adak

Lake Illawarra in Wollongong

Once named Tom Thumb’s lagoon by Australian circum-navigator Matthew Flinders, Lake Illawarra today thankfully remembers the name given by the local Tharawal and Wadi Wadi people instead of a fairy tale character, after whom Flinders had named his own boat that had anchored in this lagoon in 1797.

As a large natural body of water, it was a source of spirituality, besides food, to these local aboriginal people, of whom, many burial sites and middens have been discovered all around the lake.

The lake, or rather lagoon, buzzes with water sports and activities, particularly in summer, and you can indulge in some easy paddleboarding or kayaking on its calm waters.

Alternately, one can walk or cycle on the Illawarra art trail by the lagoon that showcases local works that recollect the Aboriginal history and local flora and fauna of the region.

The entrance of the lagoon from the sea, at Windang, looks beautiful in the interplay of sea and silt, with easy accommodation available overlooking the waters.

Mt. Keira Lookout. Photo by Ayan Adak

Mt. Keira Lookout

Yet another scenic lookout on the Illawarra escarpment looming over the Wollongong region is the Mt. Keira lookout. The hill casts its sentinel shadows over Wollongong and is distinctly visible from most parts of the city.

The Mt. Keira lookout provides gorgeous panoramic views and one can easily trace the most popular travel destinations of Wollongong including its many beaches, the resplendent Nan Tien temple, lake Illawarra, the bustling Port Kembla region, as well as the sparkling white lighthouses of Wollongong city.

The lookout is part of the Botanical Gardens sitting directly underneath its shadow and has a 5.5km walking track through eucalyptus forests that starts and ends at the lookout.

Contrary to expectations – and in line with Wollongong’s naming traditions – Keira is apparently an Aboriginal term meaning lagoon (the Illawarra Lake) or high mountain, or even a rendition of Geera, daughter of the West wind, who turned to stone in her isolation, while her five other sisters were thrown into the sea by the West Wind for misbehaving, which eventually gave Wollongong its name.

Mt. Keira was once a large coal-mining centre, its high-grade coal being much sought after in Asia. Coal was despatched downhill to the Wollongong wharf by horse carts initially and then via trams – the extant tramlines of which have been preserved even today on the city’s waterfront.

At the Wollongong Botanic Gardens. Photo by Ayan Adak

Wollongong Botanic Gardens

The Botanic Gardens at Wollongong is situated underneath Mt. Keira in the aptly named suburb of Keiraville.

It includes beautiful walks through gardens of roses, azaleas and a large swathe of succulents, besides housing subtropical and dry rainforests, complete with a creek draining onto a large lake.

Of special mention is a Japanese barrel bridge that commemorates the connection of Wollongong with sister city Kawasaki, besides a poetic rotunda near the rose garden with brilliant verses on its octagonal roof that reinforces the sublime beauty of nature.

The Garden also includes the Mount Keira summit and Puckey’s reserve – the latter includes a long winding boardwalk through coastal sand dunes and enigmatic wetlands, terminating at the North Wollongong Beach near a lagoon.

If you have still not satiated your faunal thirst for beauty and knowledge, you can head over to the Illawarra Rhododendron Gardens near Mt. Pleasant, which overflows in springtime in blooms of rhododendrons, azaleas, magnolias and camellias besides housing a pool of waterlilies that will make you scribble the perfect haikus of a sunny afternoon.

Wollongong's two lighthouses. Photo by Ayan Adak

Flagstaff Hill and Lighthouse

As Ted says in How I met your mother , a person gets a certain allotment of lighthouses per lifetime. Well, not for those living in Wollongong for the city boasts not one, but two beautiful lighthouses within close proximity to each other (and is the only place in eastern Australia to hold the record).

The older one, the Wollongong Breakwater Lighthouse, or the Old Lighthouse dates back from 1871 to guide increased shipping activity from coal-mining operations.

Its importance diminished though when a newer one – the Wollongong Head Lighthouse was built in 1937. The older one was deactivated in 1974 and was on the verge of demolition until locals came together and luckily saved this piece of heritage.

Though decommissioned, the Breakwater Lighthouse is fully functional today and lights up the dark skies on special occasions while being protected as a local heritage building.

travel world wollongong

The Wollongong Head Lighthouse stands majestically atop Flagstaff hill, and is listed today as a local government heritage building for its history besides being the country’s first fully automatic electric lighthouse.

The walk to the lighthouse through verdant green slopes is as picturesque as it is panoramic. You can spot the full length of the Wollongong City Beach, replete with surfers and swimmers, the bellowing chimneys of the industrial heart of Port Kembla in the background besides the five islands strewn near the shore.

As you walk around the summit of Flagstaff Hill, you get amazing 360-degree views of the city on one side and the sea on the other.

Look out for the Vietnam War Memorial along with three canons near the base of the lighthouse, installed way back in 1879 to repel attacks from the Russian Navy, similar to canons established on strategic vantage points along the Sydney Harbour .

Travel to Wollongong

As with any other thriving University township, Wollongong seems to have an ever-flowing stream of youthful energy, which is most evident in spots such as Flagstaff Hill or the City Centre.

It is a destination for all ages and is heavily packaged with an above-average quota of lookouts, hills, reserves, beaches and gardens. The city centre is packed with vibrant street art and strewn with cosmopolitan cuisines that can rival any world class city.

The Jamberoo Action Park to the south and the Science Space centre to the north will enthral children while automobile aficionados can spend hours at the Australian Motor-life Museum or the HARS Aviation Museum.

Then there are National Parks that wrap Wollongong from North to South and are full of bushland trails and beaches. Even if you do nothing, Wollongong has a lot to offer in its string of beaches and classy cafes overlooking the Pacific.

So the next time you are in Sydney, take the Grand Pacific Drive to head over to the Gong – it will prove through a hundred reasons and more, that the younger sibling has indeed come of age as an inspiring destination that stands on its own, with its share of history, nature, gastronomy and more.

Although often overlooked by visitors to Sydney, the lovely coastal city of Wollongong is certainly worth visiting in its own right. Wedged in between the soaring cliffs and mountains of the Illawarra Escarpment and the glinting waters of the Tasman Sea, it boasts lots of beautiful surf beaches and spectacular natural scenery.

While it is noted for both its heavy industry and busy port, New South Wales’ third largest city also has a lively, youthful feel thanks to its sizeable student population. Besides visiting its excellent art galleries and state-of-the-art science center, there are also a handful of interesting historic tourist attractions for you to check out. Other things to do in Wollongong include visiting its humongous Buddhist temple and botanical gardens.

With the scenic Grand Pacific Drive passing by and both Sydney and Royal National Park lying nearby, ‘The Gong’ makes for the perfect daytrip destination or quiet weekend away.

One of the largest regional art museums in Australia, it was established in 1951 and now occupies a striking historic building with four floors full of light and airy galleries. In total, it contains almost 3,000 artworks with everything from Neolithic pots and Colonial-era works to Asian contemporary pieces and Aboriginal artifacts and art show.

Aside from perusing its extensive collection, guests can also attend one of its temporary exhibitions which are regularly held over the course of the year.

11. Wollongong City Beach

If instead of art it is some sun, sea, sand and surf that you are after, then Wollongong City Beach is the ideal place to head. Located just a short walk from the center, it is very popular with both locals and tourists alike thanks to its gorgeous golden sands, easy accessibility and umpteen amenities and outdoor activities.

Stretching three kilometers in length, its warm and welcoming sands are perfect for lounging on lazily while some superb swimming and surfing can be enjoyed offshore. In addition, there is a playground, picnic areas and a bike path for visitors to make use of with grassy parks and outdoor exercise equipment also on offer.

10. Kiama Blowhole

Kiama Blowhole

Long a top tourist attraction, Kiama Blowhole has been attracting visitors to the area for well over a century now. Set just half an hour’s drive south of the city, the impressive and awe-inspiring natural phenomenon lies on a wind-swept point right next to the center of the small coastal town of Kiama.

Formed approximately 260 million years ago, the blowhole is surrounded by craggy basalt columns and dramatic rock formations with the ferocious sea pounding the coastline just a couple of meters away. Under certain conditions, water is channeled through the narrow chasm and sprayed up to 25 meters into the air, drenching everyone and everything around it.

While this certainly makes for a spectacular sight, the less famous and less visited ‘Little Blowhole’ nearby is much more regular when it comes to spurting seawater into the sky.

9. Science Space

Science Space

A very fun and family friendly place to explore, the brilliant Science Space can be found just five minutes’ drive north of downtown. Aside from its interactive exhibits, the hands-on science museum also has an exquisite planetarium for visitors to check out with live experiments and demonstrations regularly taking place.

Now operated by the University of Wollongong, the state-of-the-art center was first opened in 1989 and has proved to be very popular with children and adults alike ever since. Currently it contains more than ninety interesting exhibits for you to engage with that look at everything from buoyancy and dinosaurs to electricity, anatomy and nanotechnology.

After having learnt about various scientific laws and phenomena, it is well worth staying to watch an educational film at what is NSW’s best planetarium with special science shows featuring sound, music and liquid nitrogen also being held in its theater.

8. North Beach

North Beach

Although much shorter than its southernly neighbor, North Beach is the primary place that people in the city go to sunbathe, swim and surf. This is because it is not only backed by beautiful bluffs and big grassy spaces but is the only local beach that is patrolled year-round by lifeguards.

Ideal for families, it has lots of rock pools, wading areas and calm swimming spots for young and old alike to splash about in while offshore waves up to two metres-high attract surfers too. Besides strolling along the 500-metre-long beach, visitors can sunbathe, sit and enjoy a picnic or head to the nearby park and playground.

With countless cafes and restaurants located nearby and the city centre set just a short drive away, it is no wonder that the scenic and sun-kissed North Beach appeals to so many people.

7. Mount Keira Lookout

Mount Keira Lookout

Boasting breath-taking panoramas over the city and its surroundings, Mount Keira and the rest of the Illawarra escarpment rise up dramatically above Wollongong. In just fifteen minutes’ drive, you can find yourself atop of the lofty mount, enjoying stunning views up and down the Pacific coast from its lovely lookout.

Due to its distinctive shape and close proximity to the center, Mount Keira has long been a major local landmark. Reaching 464 meters in height, its rainforest-coated slopes are home to some great hiking trails and incredible wildlife with the whole escarpment acting as a sacred site for the local Wodi Wodi people.

While many people come to hike or bike amidst its pristine nature, the main reason most visit is for the unparalleled views on offer from its prominent peak which has benches, binoculars and a cafe for visitors to make use of.

6. Wollongong Botanic Garden

Wollongong Botanic Garden

A very peaceful and picturesque place to amble around, the delightful Wollongong Botanic Garden can be found right at the foot of the mighty Mount Keira. Home to a huge collection of plants, flowers, trees and shrubs, it has lots of scenic sections and secluded spots for visitors to explore.

First opened to the public in 1970, its sprawling site now boasts thousands of species of plants with innumerable azaleas and succulents on show alongside pretty herb, rose and woodland gardens. On top of this, you can also find several rainforest areas while a charming creek quietly meanders its way through the park and into a reflective lake.

Besides enjoying all its fantastic flora and seeing its gorgeous Japanese bridge and tea house, guests can take guided walks and workshops or explore the colorful contents of the garden’s glasshouse.

5. Port Kembla Beach

Port Kembla Beach

Widely considered to be one of the best beaches in the area, the popular Port Kembla Beach lies just fifteen minutes’ drive down the coast from the center. Bordered to the north by a low-lying cliff, its soft sands seemingly stretch away forever into the distance as they curve their way gently along the Tasman Sea.

At the nearest part to Wollongong, visitors can find a large saltwater pool and a historic surf club which was impressively founded in 1910. While strong rips and swells abound around the northern headland, the southern stretches of the beach have much calmer spots where you can swim and wade about in rock pools.

Aside from swimming, surfing and splashing about in the sea, you can also stroll along its endless sands which reach over 6.5 kilometers in length and are lined by pretty parks and lush vegetation the whole way along.

4. Wollongong Head Lighthouse

Wollongong Head Lighthouse

Perched atop of the prominent Flagstaff Point is one of the city’s stand-out symbols and sights: the Wollongong Head Lighthouse. Set just a stone’s throw away from downtown, it overlooks both the historic harbour and the glimmering waters of the Pacific Ocean.

Built all the way back in 1936, it is remarkably still in use until this day with its automatic bi-colored light guiding ships, yachts and sailing boats to safety. Not only do they have to navigate the various rocky headlands that dot the coast but the small group of The Five Islands which lie just offshore.

Towering 25 meters in height, the brilliantly bright white lighthouse stands out delightfully against its surroundings with the grassy knoll at its foot being both a popular viewpoint and picnic spot.

3. Nan Tien Temple

Nan Tien Temple

Another of Wollongong’s most important landmarks is the massive and majestic Nan Tien Temple which is set amidst some lovely grounds and gardens. Located on the southern outskirts of Wollongong, it is impressively the largest Buddhist temple complex in all the Southern Hemisphere.

Meaning ‘Paradise of the Sun’ in Chinese, the sprawling site was erected between 1992 and 1995 by the Taiwanese Fo Guang Shan Buddhist order. Alongside an attractive eight-storey pagoda you can spy large and elaborately decorated prayer halls and landscaped gardens studded with sacred shrines and statues.

At the temple complex visitors can take t’ai chi classes and meditation retreats or learn more about Buddhism by wandering around its museum and taking in all the amazing architecture and religious artworks on show.

2. Wattamolla Beach

Wattamolla Beach

Tucked away within a secluded part of Royal National Park is yet another of the New South Wales coastline’s most beautiful beaches. Although it lies almost at the midway point between the city and Sydney, Wattamolla Beach is definitely well worth visiting due to its spellbinding beauty and ample outdoor activities.

Protected from the rough waves of the Tasman Sea by the protruding Martin Head and Provincial Point, Wattamolla is not only home to a picturesque beach but a quiet cove and lagoon too. Only adding to the site’s scenic splendor is the small waterfall that slowly cascades its way down one of the nearby cliff faces.

Aside from lounging on the sandbar and swimming in the lagoon’s calm waters, visitors can bask in breath-taking views of the coast from the Provincial Point Lookout or surf the rips and breaks nearer to the headland.

1. Grand Pacific Drive

Grand Pacific Drive

Winding its way along the coast from Sydney to Shoalhaven is one of the most scenic routes in all of Australia: the Grand Pacific Drive. An absolute treat to travel along, it takes you past wonderful beaches and steep coastal cliffs with stupendous scenery, nature and views wherever you go.

Although it stretches 140 kilometers in total, the section from Sydney to Wollongong is particularly scenic and enjoyable to drive along. This is because the rambling route passes through the pristine wilderness of Royal National Park with idyllic beaches and imposing cliffs set alongside lush tracts of coastal rainforest.

Besides stopping off at famous spots such as Wattamolla Beach and the incredible Wedding Cake Rock, one of the most memorable parts of the journey is driving across the iconic Sea Cliff Bridge. Directly facing the open ocean, the bridge boasts unparalleled views of the Pacific as you continue down the coast towards Wollongong.

You can watch the solar eclipse from One World Observatory in NYC: How to get tickets

travel world wollongong

A total solar eclipse will pass through parts of the United States on Monday, April 8, meaning the shadow of the moon will plunge a narrow strip of land into darkness in the middle of the day.

Some tourist destinations, such as Niagara Falls , are going big for the eclipse. The state park is offering "free and open-to-the-public programming" leading up to April 8, the park said in a news release.

Another tourist destination offering a unique place to watch the eclipse is One World Observatory . Located on top of One World Trade Center in New York City, the observatory is offering the public a chance to witness the eclipse from the "highest observation deck in all the Western Hemisphere," according to a news release.

Tickets are $94 for adults, $92 for seniors and $88 for children ages 6 to 12. Children five years old and younger can enter for free. Tickets are on sale now on One World Observatory's website .

A ticket gets you entry to the observatory, one pair of solar eclipse viewing glasses, a voucher for one complimentary beverage of your choice, a commemorative One World Observatory pint glass, a commemorative souvenir photo and 10% off at the retail shop, according to the news release.

What is the path of totality for the total solar eclipse?

Before entering the U.S., the eclipse's path of totality will travel over a portion of northern Mexico. It will pass into Texas around 1:30 p.m. local time. It will then cover portions of the Midwest and East Coast and touch southeast Canada before it moves out to sea, according to  NASA .

Several major cities will be in its  direct line of darkness , including Dallas; Little Rock, Arkansas; Indianapolis; Cleveland; Buffalo, New York; and Burlington Vermont. This animated map shows the path and local time the total eclipse will pass across the nation.

How do I watch the 2024 solar eclipse?

There's a few ways of watching the eclipse:

  • Get the full experience in person : If you're in a narrow band of U.S. land that spans from Texas to Maine, you will see the moon block the sun and its shadow cast a night-like darkness over Earth for a few minutes. You'll be able to look up without eye protection and see the outline of the moon.
  • Watch from outside the path of totality : Much of the U.S. will get a partial view of the eclipse that isn't nearly as impressive as being in the path of totality. Earth won't be plunged into darkness and you'll have to wear protective eyewear to see the moon partially block the sun.
  • Watch a livestream : Check back on April 8 for a video feed from the path of totality. It's not the same as being there in person, but hey,  at least you won't have to sit in traffic .

What time is the solar eclipse on April 8?

The eclipse will begin in Texas at 1:27 p.m. CDT and end in Maine at 3:35 p.m. EDT, but the exact time of the eclipse varies by where you are in its path.

You can search by zip code  to find the exact time for your location.

Where is the best place to watch the eclipse?

Texas is considered the best state for eclipse viewing . There's a good chance the skies will be clear and it's location along the southern path of the eclipse means totality will last a little longer.

What is a solar eclipse?

Any celestial object like a moon or a planet that passes between two other bodies can create  an eclipse  by obscuring the view of objects like the sun.

A total eclipse occurs when the moon appears as the same size as the sun and blocks the entire disk, leading to a period of darkness lasting several minutes. The resulting "totality," when observers can see the outermost layer of the sun's atmosphere, known as the corona, confuses animals – nocturnal creatures stir and bird and insects fall silent.

Brazil Police Recommend Criminal Charges Against Bolsonaro

The federal police accused the former president of falsifying his Covid-19 vaccination records.

Jair Bolsonaro standing in the middle of a group of supporters and waving to the crowd below.

By Jack Nicas

Reporting from Rio de Janeiro

Brazil’s federal police recommended that former President Jair Bolsonaro be criminally charged in a scheme to falsify his Covid-19 vaccine card, partly to travel to the United States during the pandemic, in the latest sign of criminal investigations closing in on the former president.

Federal prosecutors will now decide whether to pursue the case. If they do, it will be the first time the former president has faced criminal charges.

Brazilian police accused Mr. Bolsonaro of ordering a top aide to obtain falsified Covid-19 vaccination records for himself and his daughter, 13, in late 2022, just before the former president traveled to Florida to stay for three months following his election loss.

Brazilian police said they were awaiting an answer from the U.S. Justice Department on whether Mr. Bolsonaro used a fake vaccination card to enter the United States, which could bring different criminal charges.

At the time, most international visitors to the United States were required to show proof of Covid-19 vaccination to enter the country, and a U.S. official said even a foreign leader would have had to comply with such rules.

Mr. Bolsonaro has said he did not receive a Covid-19 vaccine, but he has denied accusations that he was involved in any plan to falsify his vaccination records. His lawyer said in a text message that he was still reviewing the accusations.

If he is convicted of forging his vaccine card, Mr. Bolsonaro could face prison time.

The federal police’s indictment is the first time the various criminal investigations into Mr. Bolsonaro have moved toward charges.

Mr. Bolsonaro has been subject to questioning and searches as part of several inquiries, including into the selling of watches and jewels he received as presidential gifts from Saudi Arabia and other countries, as well as accusations that he worked with top government officials to hatch a plan to try to hold onto power after his 2022 election loss .

Brazil’s electoral court has already ruled Mr. Bolsonaro ineligible for public office until 2030 for spreading false information about Brazil’s voting systems on state television, forcing him to sit out the next presidential contest in 2026.

During the pandemic, Mr. Bolsonaro was critical of the Covid-19 vaccine , joking that it would turn people into crocodiles and instead promoting unproven treatments, such as hydroxychloroquine, an antimalarial drug.

His administration hesitated to secure vaccines when they were first being distributed, exacerbating the pandemic in Brazil, according to a Brazilian congressional investigation that recommended in 2021 that the former president be charged with “ crimes against humanity, ” among other charges, for his actions during the pandemic.

Prosecutors at the time did not charge him. More than 700,000 people have died in Brazil because of Covid-19, the second-highest national death count after the United States.

In May 2023, the police searched Mr. Bolsonaro’s home , confiscated his cellphone and arrested one of his closest aides and two of his security guards as part of the investigation into the fake vaccination records.

In a complaint unsealed on Tuesday, Brazil’s federal police said records showed that Mr. Bolsonaro’s personal aide, Lt. Col. Mauro Cid, and Mr. Cid’s wife used fake vaccination cards to enter the United States in 2022. Mr. Cid, who was arrested last year as part of the investigation, told the police that once Mr. Bolsonaro found out that Mr. Cid had a fake vaccine card, he ordered the aide to get him one, too, the police said.

The police said records showed that on Dec. 21, 2022, an official in a suburb of Rio de Janeiro then entered false records into the city’s health database that Mr. Bolsonaro and his daughter had received two doses of Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine earlier that year. The police said that during one of the two dates on which the records said Mr. Bolsonaro received a vaccine, the former president was not in the Rio de Janeiro suburb.

In addition to Mr. Cid, the police said, several other allies of the former president falsified vaccination records in a similar scheme, some of whom used the records to accompany Mr. Bolsonaro to the United States. The police also recommended charges against them.

Mr. Bolsonaro spent his first three months after the presidency staying in a rented home near Disney World outside Orlando.

Mr. Bolsonaro entered the United States several other times while the country required visitors to show proof of vaccination, including to attend the United Nations General Assembly and to meet President Biden in Los Angeles, though those 2022 trips preceded the plan described by investigators to falsify vaccine records.

In 2021, Mr. Bolsonaro, who was perhaps the only unvaccinated world leader at the U.N. General Assembly, opened that proceeding with a speech that said Brazil would not require anyone to get vaccinated. He added that he had recovered from Covid-19 by using “off-label” drugs.

“History and science will hold everyone accountable,” he said .

During that trip, he and his entourage struggled to enter New York restaurants that required proof of vaccination. Instead, he posted a photo of his team eating pizza on the sidewalk. Mr. Bolsonaro’s health minister, who was biting a piece of pizza in the photo, tested positive for Covid-19 hours after attending the U.N. meetings.

Flávia Milhorance contributed reporting from Rio de Janeiro, and Paulo Motoryn from Brasília.

An earlier version of this article misstated the number of Covid-19 deaths in Brazil. There have been more than 700,000 deaths, not nearly 600,000 deaths.
