Fall Out Boy + Bring Me the Horizon Announce 2023 North American Tour

Fall Out Boy are hitting the road with Bring Me the Horizon  this year. The two just announced a set of 2023 North American tour dates together. Alkaline Trio will join them for three of the shows. The package includes several concerts at major stadiums.

Plus, additional bands New Found Glory, Four Year Strong, The Academy Is…, Royal & The Serpent, Games We Play, Daisy Grenade and Carr will provide further support on select dates on the trek.

See the tour dates near the bottom of this post.

Last week, Fall Out Boy  teased the tour with a video showing venues displaying the newly adopted Fall Out Boy proverb,  "If you build it, they will come."  They later  shared an image resembling BMTH's  That's the Spirit album artwork with the caption, "Things are looking overcast on the horizon. Check back tomorrow [Jan. 31] to see if weather conditions improve."

Last month, Fall Out Boy announced So Much (for) Stardust , their forthcoming eighth studio album. It features " Love From the Other Side " and " Heartbreak Feels So Good ," both released in January. Fall Out Boy heavily  teased the album earlier this year.

Two weeks ago, founding Fall Out Boy guitarist Joe Trohman revealed that he was taking a break from the band for mental health reasons. Fall Out Boy singer-guitarist Patrick Stump , bassist Pete Wentz and drummer Andy Hurley supported his decision.

"It pains me to make this decision, especially when we are releasing a new album that fills me with great pride," Trohman said  in a statement on Jan. 18.

Meanwhile, Bring Me the Horizon's latest full length,  POST HUMAN: SURVIVAL HORROR came out in 2020 and has been succeeded by a number of singles, the most recent being "STraNgeRs."

Review: In Tampa, Fall Out Boy’s explosive concert visited songs old and new

  • Gabrielle Calise Times staff

TAMPA — Fall Out Boy’s headlining set at MidFlorida Credit Union Ampitheatre on Tuesday kicked off with a bang. Many earsplitting bangs, in fact.

After the red velvet curtain peeled open to reveal the four-piece band, the first handful of songs set the tone with a POP!-POP!-POP! of fireworks, plumes of fog and showers of sparks. Ribbons of flame flared across the stage and burst from the end of Pete Wentz’s bass, so hot you could feel it on your face in the seats.

In a dazzling concert packed with Fall Out Boy songs new and old, the band proved why they still have the hearts of pop-punk lovers of all ages. Their followers came to scream along to nearly 30 songs, wearing their Warped Tour-inspired best: freshly-dyed hair, “Make America Emo Again” T-shirts and a plethora of black Chuck Taylors.

The show fit in well during a summer of emo revival in Tampa Bay that has already featured many nostalgia-inducing concerts from the MySpace era, including Yellowcard, Blink-182 and Taking Back Sunday.

Fall Out Boy’s marathon set included songs from each of their eight studio albums. They touched on soaring anthem rock (”Centuries” and “Save Rock and Roll”) as well as throwbacks to their catchiest singalong hits (”This Ain’t a Scene, It’s an Arms Race” and “Sugar, We’re Goin Down”).

The quartet paid special attention to their latest and first projects: 2023′s “So Much (for) Stardust,” which fans have praised for evoking Fall Out Boy’s older sound that has been missing from the post-hiatus mainstream pop years, and “Take This To Your Grave,” their debut record which just turned 20.

As Fall Out Boy launched into songs from the latter, the more extreme pyrotechnical elements were traded for simple blue lighting: a nod to the “Take This To Your Grave” album cover. Singer Patrick Stump reminded fans that their journey kicked off, in some ways, in the Sunshine State.

“We wrote [“Dead on Arrival”] like 20 years ago, and we sent it into a label in Florida called Fueled By Ramen,” Stump said.

Stump remains a stunning vocalist, shining through the night as he howled his signature soulful belt. He’s a treat to watch prancing across the stage, but is best appreciated during the stripped-down moments. A highlight came during “What a Catch, Donnie,” watching Stump plunk away on the piano, face glistening with beads of sweat as he squeezed his eyes shut and showed off his falsetto.

This is not to say the rest of the band didn’t bring it, too. Drummer Andy Hurley anchored the intensity throughout the set, rivaling the firecrackers behind him with a thunder of breakneck ferocity. Lead guitarist Joe Trohman was a delight whether he was strumming catchy, hip-shaking surf-rock for “Uma Thurman” or showing off his Chicago hardcore punk roots during the “Take This to Your Grave” deep cuts. Wentz brought the same vibe when he dove into the crowd during the end of “Saturday.” He ended the show with a throaty scream as black and white confetti fluttered around him.

We must take a moment to talk about the openers, who all succeeded in ratcheting up the energy before Fall Out Boy’s big bang. The night kicked off with raunchy alt-pop singer songwriter Carr (aka Carly McClellan), who skipped around stage in a black tutu and brought along a crowdsurfing blow-up doll named Ginger.

Next, Royal and the Serpent showed support for the LGBTQ+ community. Fans screamed as singer Ryan Santiago ripped off her Tampa Bay Lightning jersey to reveal a tank top with the message, “Protect Trans Kids.” She offered an updated version of the pledge:

“I pledge allegiance to the drag and the united gays of America,” Santiago said. “To safety in public, from queer to trans. One nation, underdogs.”

British band Bring Me the Horizon, whose set spanned metalcore to trippy electro-rock, continued the political motif in between mosh pits.

“I get it. This is a country divided,” frontman Oliver Sykes said. “So what I need you to do, America, is open your minds. Open your hearts. And most importantly, open the f--king pit.”

Wearing a tight tank top labeled “CULT LEADER,” Sykes snaked up and around the amphitheater as he sang “Drown,” a tattoo-covered Pied Piper mobbed by adoring fans trying to touch him at every turn.

Bring Me the Horizon’s aggressive metal guitars and guttural screams may have been too heavy for others (read: the parents who took that time to scroll Facebook), but the electricity of their set foreshadowed what was to come.

By the time Fall Out Boy took the stage a little after 9 p.m., the crowd was buzzing. Though not even earplugs could prepare fans for the deafening fireworks punctuating the first few songs and the encore. Some of the bangs were downright jarring.

Wentz led much of the pageantry during the show, interrogating a Magic 8 ball to determine the night’s surprise song (”Miss Missing You,” off the band’s first post-hiatus album, “Save Rock and Roll”). After the song, the bassist delivered a moody spoken word track, “Baby Annihilation.”

“The first time I took the mask off, just had another one on underneath,” he recited into the microphone. “I’m just melted wax on a birthday cake, another year fades away/ Charcoal crushed, pixie fever, angel dust.”

At the end, Wentz held a silky black cloth over his head. When he dropped it, the fabric collapsed into a heap. Wentz reappeared several stories up, holding his bass at the top of a gnarled tree at the back of the stage. He started to strum. Not a Fall Out Boy song, but Ozzy Osbourne’s “Crazy Train.”

The riff bled into “Dance, Dance.” Wentz evaporated again. Then there he was halfway across the amphitheater, shredding from behind the soundboard.

The members of the band weren’t the only ones with surprises up their sleeves. During “Fake Out,” the crowd turned the venue into a sea of swaying rosy lights. These weren’t the high-tech, light-up bracelets that Taylor Swift used on her Eras Tour. Instead, fans in cities across the tour have been using the internet to coordinate “ The Stardust Project ,” passing out pink slips of paper for others to hold up to their cell phone flashlights.

“That looks pretty [expletive] awesome,” Wentz said.

It was a long night, and a hot one. First responders retrieved a number of overheated fans. Wentz, wearing a combo of leather pants and a hoodie despite the heat index of 96, paused several times to address the heat: Once to ask for water for the folks in the pit, and another praise security for keeping an eye on fans.

The surreal set pieces onstage nodded to Fall Out Boy’s weirder lyrics and motifs from over the years. A giant Doberman puppet mouthed along at one point. There were ticking clock faces and cartoon moons and pink seashells galore.

All of the fanfare made for a fun and unforgettable show. But the way the crowd was thrashing along and hollering every lyric, you could tell they didn’t need any extra spectacle to find the night special. Just hearing these songs — especially the throwbacks — was explosive enough.

Fall Out Boy’s Tampa setlist

A recording of Fall Out Boy’s recent single, a topical twist on Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start the Fire,” blasted over the speakers right before the band came onstage. Then “The Pink Seashell,” a spoken word piece narrated by Ethan Hawke, played right before the curtain opened and the group emerged.

At this point, the band went straight into a four-song encore, saving time by having Wentz simply announce it instead of going offstage and coming back on.

FALL OUT BOY Announces Summer 2023 U.S. Tour With BRING ME THE HORIZON

Grammy Award -nominated and multi-platinum selling rock band FALL OUT BOY is set to hit the road this summer with their 2023 headline tour "So Much For (Tour) Dust" . The 25-plus-date North American trek will kick off with a show of epic proportions at Chicago's famed Wrigley Field on June 21 before continuing through cities like St. Louis, Dallas, Phoenix, Atlanta, Toronto, and concluding in Camden, New Jersey on August 6.

In addition to Wrigley Field, "So Much For (Tour) Dust" includes three more stadium stops: BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, Forest Hills Stadium in New York and Fenway Park in Boston. Complete routing is available below.

FALL OUT BOY will be joined by BRING ME THE HORIZON on most dates, as well as ALKALINE TRIO , NEW FOUND GLORY , FOUR YEARS STRONG , THE ACADEMY IS… , ROYAL & THE SERPENT , GAMES WE PLAY , DAISY GRENADE and CARR on select shows throughout the tour's run.

Ticket presales for "So Much For (Tour) Dust" go on sale Thursday, February 2 beginning 10 a.m. local time. General tickets will be available for purchase beginning Friday, February 3 at 10 a.m. local time.

"So Much For (Tour) Dust" , presented by Live Nation , is in support of FALL OUT BOY 's forthcoming new album "So Much (For) Stardust" , which arrives March 24, 2023 on Fueled By Ramen / Elektra / DCD2 Records . The record was produced by Neal Avron .

Last Wednesday, FALL OUT BOY returned to their roots for a surprise homecoming show at Chicago's legendary 1,000-capacity Metro — announced only two days prior, the show immediately sold out. Just down the street from Wrigley Field, the band first played the venue in September 2002, a pivotal gig that FALL OUT BOY 's Patrick Stump jokingly called back to for the packed crowd two decades later: "Twenty years ago, I told my mom I was going to take a semester off [college] because we were headlining Metro and I wanted to see how that would work out." FALL OUT BOY 's Pete Wentz expressed the band's enduring relationship with the venue: "Walking up those stairs is the closest thing this band will have to church."

Variety hailed the night as a "triumphant hometown show," noting that "there are concerts, and there are events, and a hometown show in Chicago from [ FALL OUT BOY ] is definitely in the latter category." Over the course of the night, the band ripped through a mix of their biggest hits and deepest cuts, with Illinois Entertainer praising the set as "taking full advantage of both the intimate venue and the loyal hometown crowd to deliver a once-in-a-decade event."

The show also featured the live public debut of both "Love From The Other Side" and "Heartbreak Feels So Good" , two tracks from the new album and the latter of which was released the morning of the show. The Chicago Sun-Times lauded the two tracks, noting the new material "takes all they've learned and accomplished the past 20 years and combines it with their unflinching roots for an ultimate glow-up."

Prior to the show, the city was enveloped with teasing signage across city buildings and stations along the "L." Foreshadowing the impending tour announcement, the marquees at Metro and Wrigley both featured curiously complimentary nods to the 1989 film "Field Of Dreams" .

FALL OUT BOY first hit the stage in 2023 with a dynamic set at iHeartRadio ALTer EGO in Los Angeles, California on January 14, just days after officially revealing the release date for "Love From The Other Side" .

FALL OUT BOY most recently co-headlined "The Hella Mega Tour" in July 2021 alongside GREEN DAY and WEEZER , playing live in front of over one million fans on a sold-out global stadium tour. The U.S. leg included numerous sold-out stadium gigs — including renowned venues like Wrigley Field, Boston's Fenway Park and Los Angeles' Dodger Stadium. Critical and fan acclaim poured in, with USA Today hailing it "the most stacked line-up of any rock tour in 2021," Billboard noting that each night was "serving up a buffet of hits in front of one of the largest concert crowds," and Rolling Stone calling it "wildly entertaining." The tour was nominated for both "Major Tour Of The Year" and "Best Rock Tour" at the Pollstar Awards in 2021. The international leg of the tour took place throughout the summer of 2022.

"So Much (For) Stardust" is FALL OUT BOY 's eighth studio album and first since 2018's "Mania" , which garnered a Grammy nomination for "Best Rock Album" and marked their third consecutive and fourth overall No. 1 album.

Darien Lake Amphitheater witnessed an electrifying spectacle Friday night as Fall Out Boy took the stage and delivered a concert experience that left the sold-out audience in awe. Joined by the dynamic rockers Bring Me The Horizon, as well as the talented acts Royal & The Serpent and Games We Play, this event was nothing short of an adrenaline-fueled rollercoaster of emotions and musical excellence.

As the sun began setting on the picturesque outdoor venue, Games We Play kicked off the night with an impressive set, warming up the crowd and setting the tone for what was to come. Their energy and catchy tunes got concert-goers moving and set the stage for an evening of non-stop entertainment. While only having a few songs to perform, Games We Play did a crowd-engaging cover of “Mr. Brightside” which got the spark going.

Next up, Royal & The Serpent took the stage and proved why they are a band to watch. With an eclectic mix of indie-pop and alternative sounds, the group the audience with their raw, emotional performance. Lead vocalist Ryan Santiago’s vocals soared through the amphitheater, leaving a lasting impression on the fans.

Bring Me The Horizon , the British rock sensation, took the Darien Lake Amphitheater by storm, cementing its status as one of the most captivating and innovative acts in the contemporary rock scene. From the moment they stepped on stage, it was evident that they were on a mission to leave an indelible mark on their audience. Led by the enigmatic frontman Oliver Sykes, Bring Me The Horizon’s performance was a masterclass in showmanship and musical prowess. Sykes’ raw and emotionally charged vocals pierced through the air, commanding the attention of every person in the amphitheater. His dynamic stage presence drew the audience into an intense and immersive experience, transforming the concert into an intimate connection between the band and their fans.

The band’s ability to seamlessly blend different genres was on full display, as they effortlessly transitioned between heavy metalcore anthems and more melodic, atmospheric moments. Tracks like “Shadow Moses” and “Can You Feel My Heart” showcased their heavier side, igniting mosh pits and fervent headbanging, while songs like “Drown” and “LosT” showcased their ability to craft emotionally resonant and introspective pieces.

Perhaps one of the most remarkable aspects of Bring Me The Horizon’s set was their unwavering authenticity and vulnerability on stage. As they performed intensely, it was clear that the band was baring their souls to their fans. This authenticity fostered a sense of unity between the audience and the musicians, making the concert feel like a cathartic and shared journey.

In addition to their emotive performances, Bring Me The Horizon also used their platform to address important social and environmental issues. Between songs, Sykes took a moment to speak passionately about mental health awareness, urging the audience to support each other and seek help when needed. The band’s commitment to using their music and influence for positive change resonated deeply with the audience, further solidifying their place as more than just a rock band.

As Bring Me The Horizon concluded their set, the anticipation for Fall Out Boy reached a fever pitch. The pop-punk veterans did not disappoint, rotating through a diverse selection of songs with each set. Fans were elated to hear the rarely played “The Takes Over the Breaks Over,” a classic from their 2008 record Infinity On High . But the surprises didn’t end there. During the medley, lead vocalist Patrick Stump treated the audience to an acoustic, shortened version of “Get Busy Living or Get Busy Dying (Do Your Part to Save the Scene and Stop Going to Shows)” from their iconic 2006 album From Under The Cork Tree . The crowd went wild, relishing in the nostalgic moment.

Fall Out Boy’s impeccable musicianship and stage presence were on full display, proving why they have remained a staple in the alternative rock scene for years. Patrick Stump’s soulful vocals, Pete Wentz’s electrifying basslines, Joe Trohman’s killer guitar riffs, and Andy Hurley’s powerhouse drumming came together in perfect harmony, elevating the concert to a whole new level.

Fall Out Boy’s signature “Magic 8 Ball” portion of the evening had become a fan-favorite since the tour began, with the band usually performing one obscure song from their repertoire. This night, they went above and beyond, playing two hidden gems. The first was the live debut of “You’re Crashing but You’re No Wave,” a long-awaited treat for die-hard fans. The second was “27,” a beloved fan-favorite from their 2013 post-hiatus record Folie À Deux .

The camaraderie between the band members was palpable, with moments of lighthearted banter and genuine appreciation for their devoted fans. It was evident that Fall Out Boy was not just performing; they were sharing an experience with their audience, creating an emotional connection that extended beyond the music.

This show at Darien Lake Amphitheater was an unforgettable night of musical marvels. With their energetic performances and raw emotion, both Fall Out Boy and Bring Me The Horizon demonstrated why they are two of the most celebrated acts in the rock scene. The show’s sold-out status was a testament to the unwavering passion of their fans, who were treated to a night of timeless classics and unforgettable rarities. This concert will undoubtedly be remembered by all who attended as one epic night.

Rock legends Fall Out Boy brought their headline tour, “So Much For (Tour) Dust,” to NYC’s Forest Hills Stadium on Wednesday evening. The tour is in support of their latest album, So Much (For) Stardust (their first new album in five years), and they brought along fellow rockers Bring Me The Horizon for the ride.

With golden hour upon us, British rock band Bring Me The Horizon took the stage. The five-piece from Sheffield played for an hour with their setlist spanning multiple albums. Drummer Matt Nicholls , keyboardist Jordan Fish , and bassist Matt Kean stood atop a massive riser, looming over guitarist Lee Malia , touring guitarist John Jones , and frontman Oliver Sykes .

The band opened with the new track “AmEN!” followed by “Teardrops” from 2020’s POST HUMAN: SURVIVAL HORROR , followed by “Happy Song” from 2015’s That’s The Spirit . On the floor of the 13,000-capacity venue – I was overjoyed to see how many fans came early to scream along with Oli. And despite the glaring sun overhead, the crowd’s energy did not let up as the band moved into “DiE4u,” “MANTRA,” “Shadow Moses,” and “sTraNgeRs” before playing “Drown” while Oli snaked his way through the crowd during the performance.

While I and the fans around me did not want their set to end, BMTH’s set did have to come to a close as they ended with “LoST,” “Can You Feel My Heart,” and “Throne.”

As sunset began to fall, the stage began to take shape for Fall Out Boy’s performance, as a menacing tree, clownish moon, and a clock took over the left of the stage; as well as a giant orb at the top. Originally hailing from Chicago, the four-piece of Patrick Stump on vocals/guitar, Pete Wentz on bass, Joe Trohman on guitar, and Andy Hurley on drums began their show with the drawback of a red velvet curtain, fireworks (yes, fireworks on the stage) and the song “Love From the Other Side” from So Much (For) Stardust . Things got hot as the second track, “The Phoenix,” was all about fire – from fire exploding from the back of the stage to fire erupting from the end of Pete Wentz’s bass. Things slowed down again when the curtain closed for fan-favorite “Sugar, We’re Goin Down” before they launched into “Uma Thurman” and “A Little Less Sixteen Candles, a Little More ‘Touch Me.’”

The band’s 24-song setlist spanned their eight studio albums – from their debut album, Take This to Your Grave , with “Chicago Is So Two Years Ago” and “Grand Theft Autumn / Where Is Your Boy” to their fourth album Folie à Deux with “Disloyal Order of Water Buffaloes” and “Headfirst Slide Into Cooperstown on a Bad Bet.” 2013’s Save Rock and Roll also got some love with “Just One Yesterday” and “Save Rock and Roll,” while their sophomore album From Under The Cork Tree also got some love with “7 Minutes in Heaven (Atavan Halen)” and “Dance, Dance.”

Gym Class Heroes vocalist Travie McCoy made a special guest appearance, as Fall Out Boy covered Gym Class Heroes tracks “Stereo Hearts” and “Cupid’s Chokehold,” which got the crowd singing along with both Patrick and Travie.

Toward the end of the show, Pete had a talk with a Magic 8 Ball in the sky (the aforementioned orb at the top of the stage) to determine what songs the band played next – prompting them to launch into “I Am My Own Muse” and “27” before telling the crowd “this is normally when we leave and then come back for an encore.” The four-piece skipped the walking off stage part entirely, and instead launched into their four-song encore of “My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light Em Up),” “Thnks fr th Mmrs,” Centuries,” and “Saturday” during which streamers erupted, and confetti fell over the crowd.

A month ago, Fall Out Boy wrapped the North American leg of their first solo headlining tour since 2018, the So Much For (Tour) Dust tour in support of their latest album So Much (For) Stardust . Now, the band is gearing up for another round with the newly-announced So Much For (2our) Dust tour, a 23-show run featuring support from Jimmy Eat World on all dates.

The So Much For (2our) Dust tour is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, Feb. 28 in Portland. Fall Out Boy will make stops in Seattle, Austin, Orlando, Grand Rapids, Nashville, and more, including a night at New York’s Madison Square Garden. The tour will wrap on Saturday, April 6 in Minneapolis.

The band will be joined on select dates by The Maine, Hot Mulligan, Daisy Grenade, Games We Play, and CARR.

The band was joined on the road earlier this year by Bring Me the Horizon on most dates, with support from Alkaline Trio, New Found Glory, Four Years Strong, The Academy Is…, Royal & The Serpent, Games We Play, Daisy Grenade, and Carr for select shows.

Fall Out Boy first teased tour dates ahead of the album, which arrived March 24, with cryptic “They Will Come” messages plastered on venue marquees throughout Chicago, Metro, and Wrigley Field, with nods to the 1989 film Field of Dreams.

Fall Out Boy shows Columbus how a veteran rock band perseveres and sounds good while they’re doing it

By: Nicholas Kobe Posted on: Tuesday, April 2, 2024

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WOUB) – Fall Out Boy’s So Much For (2our) Dust tour hit the Schottenstein Center (555 Borr Drive) Friday, with openers Jimmy Eat World , Hot Mulligan , and CARR in tow.

The veteran pop punk group set out on the worldwide tour last year, shortly after releasing So Much For Stardust , the band’s first album since 2018. The tour was overwhelmingly successful, and Friday’s show was one of more than 20 dates added to its itinerary in response.

As someone who saw this tour last year (not as a member of the press), I came expecting basically the same show. As I would find out, I’d be leaving even more impressed than I’d expected – not only because it wasn’t the same show I saw last summer, but also due to a few things which went awry.

The poster for Fall Out Boy's current 2024 tour.

This generally warmer feeling applies, albeit in a less dramatic sense, to the night’s first opener, Carly McClellan, a.k.a. CARR. After being unenthused with her performance last summer, I was happy to see the New Jersey alt-pop singer has noticeably stepped up her game, even if a few of her biggest flaws remain.

CARR’s very brief set showcasing her brand of catchy, snarky pop punk seemed to go over well with the crowd, even if that meant (by far) the least energetic response of the night. While you’d expect this with openers, I don’t think we can attribute the lack of enthusiasm solely to that. Although CARR has the kind of irreverent attitude cherished not only by Gen Z audiences, but also historically in the context of pop-punk as a whole; you’d only know how funny CARR is if judging solely by her lyrics and between song banter.

Sure, she’s a good singer, but she just walks around the stage while she’s doing it.

It isn’t her fault she can’t lean on absurd visual effects the way Fall Out Boy does, but it’s a problem as a solo artist when your drummer is giving a more visually captivating performance than you are. All this said, her performance was still a huge improvement over what I saw last summer. This is reassuring: she’s got the vocal talent and up-front personality to become something great, it’s just a lack of experience that seems to be the issue.

Up next was the musical outlier of the night, Hot Mulligan. Although the group shares some basic punk and rock “musical ancestry” with bands like Jimmy Eat World and Fall Out Boy, Hot Mulligan’s  Midwest emo leanings put them in a completely different sub-genre. However, while they maybe would make more sense opening for American Football, their wailing self-loathing worked well in the context of a straightforward pop-punk show like this.

Hot Mulligan’s whiney and slurred vocals are a trademark of Midwest emo, and you’ll either love that or hate it. As someone who generally leans towards the “love” side of that spectrum, I was generally happy with their performance. In terms of memorable and emotionally packed songs, Hot Mulligan surpassed CARR. Like CARR, however, the performance suffered when it came to stage presence.

Judging by their energy, you’d think the Lansing, MI natives were still the sort of group that plays backyards and basements, instead of literal stadiums. There was a raw feeling to the way the band flailed around on stage that I think added to the music.

Hot Mulligan takes themselves seriously, and in this case it hindered more than it helped. Being serious isn’t a bad thing, but in a genre as inherently goofy as Midwest emo, on top of awkward stage banter, it left a somewhat sour taste in my mouth. I still enjoyed Hot Mulligan, but considering the band is getting close to their tenth anniversary, it’s harder to write off their flaws in comparison to a new act like CARR.

Jimmy Eat World is the most notable addition to So Much For (2our) Dust , replacing the spot on the initial lineup occupied by British rockers Bring Me The Horizon. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed Bring Me the Horizon’s performance, but their sound was objectively too heavy for a lineup like this.

Jimmy Eat World, on the other hand, felt perfect. Even knowing that Jimmy Eat World pre-dates every other band on this bill, I was still shocked at their musical tightness. After CARR and Hot Mulligan, it was a night and day difference.

Admittedly, I’m not the biggest Jimmy Eat World fan, but even though I wasn’t as familiar with their music, I had an absolute blast watching them. The setlist was incredibly well-rounded, very rarely letting off the gas pedal. It was just an hour of dancing and singing along – often to songs I may not have loved when I heard them on the record, but was over the moon with when I heard them live.

Even with their professionalism and clear experience, the band was still having so much fun on stage, and that bled throughout the arena. I left their set not only feeling satisfied with the party I just had, but also eager to keep it going.

Also, yes, The Middle is even better live than you think it could be.

A promotional image of the band Fall Out Boy, all seated on a couch in a dark room.

Both of these runs of songs were the most energetic part of the show, in large part because this is where they allocated their – frankly, absurd – pyro budget.

Pete Wentz’s flamethrower bass for The Phoenix and My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark was my favorite example of this, along with the fire by Andy Hurley’s drum kit. There were also plenty of fireworks, which were cool in theory, but way too loud in a fully enclosed arena. Luckily, the fireworks were not a constant, so for a good 95 percent of the show, it wasn’t an issue.

When I said that the “greatest hits” run of this show was the most energetic part, it wasn’t by a huge margin.

The rest of Fall Out Boy’s set met the bar in terms of fan energy and visuals, as well as occasionally exceeding both, with some of my favorite deep cuts in their entire catalog coming out. Visually, I loved all the sets and stage props, especially the hilarious inflatable dog head that helped sing This Ain’t A Scene, It’s An Arms Race . The same goes for the giant snail, and dude in a bunny suit for Uma Thurman .

Could I explain why half this stuff was on stage?

But, was I laughing to myself at how goofy and fun it was the whole time?

Absolutely.

The new musical additions to the setlist, such as Hum Hallelujah , Dead on Arrival , and the greatest “situation-ship” anthem of all time Bang The Doldrums had me screaming at the top of my lungs, along with some personal favorites returning from their 2023 tour like Headfirst Slide into Cooperstown on a Bad Bet  and Disloyal Order of Water Buffalos .

Of course, if we’re talking about deep cuts, we have to talk about Patrick Stump’s Piano Medley and the random Magic 8 Ball song, which both feature random songs from the band’s discography. Hearing Patrick play What A Catch Donnie is was fantastic, even if it’s just a small portion of it. I also was pretty pleased to hear Fourth of July  as our “Magic 8 Ball” random song. It’s an exciting and generally underrated deep cut from American Beauty/American Psycho , that was great live, even if it made me wish they had allotted some fireworks for a song like this.

Fourth of July  also was one of a few times where Patrick’s mic stopped working, with him missing most of the first verse on this song. While it did take me out of the moment, the band pushed on every time and came right back in as if nothing had happened. Speaking of Patrick, he very early on admitted he was sick and it was taking a toll on his voice. Sure, you could notice he sounded a little different, but he still sounded phenomenal, while still having room to be dynamic and charismatic on stage and play the guitar. His piano section showed how funny and down-to-earth he is, as he asked the audience to forgive him for being sick, before bursting into a Queen cover.

Fall Out Boy’s setlist may be designed to have some chaos, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t obvious how well these four guys played together, and how long they’ve been doing it.

Jumping from last year’s, Fake Out and So Much (For) Stardust  to playing four songs from Take This To Your Grave , an album that’s older than me, So Much For (2our) Dust is a full celebration of Fall Out Boy’s legacy. Considering how many fans of all ages grew up and were in attendance singing along to every one of these songs, it’s clear that they’ve earned it.

I expected to leave Friday night feeling excited, which I did, but seeing how well Fall Out Boy rose to the challenge made me even more certain they’ve earned their place at the top of rock, and that they’ve still got years of greatness left in them.
