La Tour Madeloc: A Coastal Hike in the South of France

Camden

I was named after a town where the mountains meet the sea, so naturally I am enamored by hilly places along the coast. When I first moved to France however, I thought I was a Paris girl through and through. When I was offered a job in a small Mediterranean city, I was sad to leave the city of lights, but excited to see more of France. I did not think a small city close to the border with Spain was my vibe, but it wasn’t until I discovered the nature of the Pyrenées-Orientales that I started to really appreciate the region.

Like many during the spring of 2021, I was not able to socialize or travel, so I turned to nature and fell in love with hiking again. After Hiking Port-Vendres to Banyuls Along the Sentier Littoral and La Tour de la Massane trail, I was determined to make the trek to another remarkable summit in the area: La tour de Madeloc .

For those who do not drive, this coastal hike in the South of France is accessible by train. From the Collioure train station, it’s about a 30-minute walk to the trailhead. Even though I had visited Collioure several times before, walking through a different part of town allowed me to see idyllic landscapes and more of the vineyards.

The French hiking website Visorando has a variety of itineraries for hikes around this monument ranging from medium to difficult. The tower is located 650 m (2132.55 ft) above sea level and it took me and my partner about 2 hours with a few breaks in between to reach.

tour madeloc france

The ascent can be difficult because some of the sections of the trail are steep to climb and there is not much shade, so it can get hot rather quickly. The challenging parts of the trail are worth it however, because of the panoramic views of the sea, the coastal towns, and surrounding mountains.

Once named the Devil’s Tower, La tour de la Madeloc was built in the 13th century under James II, King of Majorca. Along with la tour de Massane , it was one of many beacons in the region to watch for attacks coming from Spain or by the sea. At the summit of the hike, you can admire the tower up close, but it is impossible to climb up, as it is currently used as a television satellite relay.

Tour Madeloc

For the descent, we chose a winding path that led us through vineyards back to the Collioure beach. We hiked in late May so the trail was blooming with Spanish Lavender, Forsythia, and pink Cistus. I’m glad we brought our raincoats with us because even though the morning was quite sunny, storm clouds soon rolled in. Luckily we didn’t get rained on!

My advice for this hike would be to go as early as possible to avoid the heat from the sun in the spring/summer, bring plenty of water, and leave no trace behind to help preserve this beautiful area! The Mediterranean Sea is unfortunately the most polluted sea in the world , so it’s important to be mindful as a tourist.

tour madeloc france

Now that I live in Paris again, I dearly miss this little corner of France. However, I’m very thankful to have a job with school vacations that allow me to escape the city and enjoy nature in different parts of the country.

Thank you so much for reading about this coastal hike in the South of France and stay tuned for more adventures in France and beyond!

Lovely photos. I used to go on holidays in that area when I was a teenager.

Oh I bet you have some wonderful memories there then!

Gorgeous! La Tour Madeloc, as well as this part of the France, is an area I’ve yet to head to in the country, and I’m always up for a hike for beautiful views! Thanks for sharing your time there, Camden. 🙂

There are so many beautiful hikes in this area, but this one is for sure a favorite.

Beautiful area!

Camden, this is an exceptional posting. Thanks to you!

The Madeloc tower is one of the places you shouldn't miss when you're in the area. Spectacular view.

July 3, 2021

The Tour de Madeloc or Tour Madeloc is a medieval watchtower in the hinterland of the Côte Vermeille in the Pyrénées-Orientales in the ancient cultural landscape of Roussillon. contents The Tour Madeloc is located on a 670 m high mountain peak in the hinterland of Banyuls-sur-Mer; From here you have a clear view of much of the coastline of the Gulf of Lion to Narbonne. Only about four kilometers further northwest is another watchtower from the same period - the Tour de la Massane. The tower was built in the late 13th century by the Majorcan King Jaume II as a watchtower and to secure the coast. With the Pyrenees peace of the year 1659 he lost any strategic importance. Already in the first half of the 20th century it was used as the location of a radio relay station. architecture The round tower, which is built of only a few hewn quarry stones, is windowless; The staircases and rooms in its interior are illuminated only by loopholike slits. Its upper edge is surrounded by numerous projecting consoles, which formerly carried a wooden battlements. Source de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tour_de_Madeloc put together: a great hiking destination

Sunset hike in the Pyrenees - Tour de Madeloc

Travel tips for port-vendres.

tour madeloc france

The Tour de Madeloc is a medieval watchtower on a 670 meters high summit in the hinterland of Banyuls-Sur-Mer . It is a two hours’ drive from Cadaqués, and it takes you almost three from Barcelona . Sure if you are in Barcelona, there are already many things to see and do, but if you are looking for a great contrasting outdoor activity and want to do a hike in the Pyrenees , it is definitely worth going to discover the borderland of France to Spain . French Catalonia, especially on the mountain slopes of the Pyrenees, is beautifully filled with green forests and wine cultivation . The hiking route to the Tour de Madeloc offers fantastic panoramic views fr om above on the sea and mountain biking in the area is also possible. To make it even better, time your hike to arrive during sunset – it will be less hot, and the colors of the horizon will take your breath away. Afterward, you probably want to stay overnight. There are a lot of camping sides in the area, especially in Argelés-Sur-Mer or stay overnight in the beautiful village of Collioure .

Jump out of the car onto the route

Arriving at the parking area, the following view will already reward you. On the left, you can see the bay of Argelés-Sur-Mer and on the right the village of Collioure . Take a deep breath in, enjoy the view over the area below you and then start your hike. You will need your breath climbing up, but the views will only get better.

The non-circular route to the watchtower of Madeloc isn’t very long, in total 4 kilometers, but it is at some points very steep. Just in case take a flashlight with you, because although going the 4 kilometers down again is less physically challenging, you have to be focused on the path and to see well is an advantage in doing so.

With the setting sun the colors of nature along the way show their beauty and diversity.

The Tour de Madeloc is well signposted on the D86 either if you are coming from Banyuls-Sur Mer or Argelés-Sur Mer . We were coming from the north and parked at the following place.

Parking spot Tour de Madeloc

Parking spot Tour de Madeloc

On the route to the madeloc watchtower.

As I said the route isn’t very long and probably it’s the best opportunity to climb up a summit of the Pyrenees with reasonable physical effort. At the same time, great views and the fact on one’s side that you actually climbed a peak of the Pyrenees, is no doubt rewarding . But if you are up for even more, there are longer routes, including the Madeloc watchtower , which are signposted along the way. On the path, for instance, you can spot further in the north-west another lookout from the same medieval period – the Tour de Massane . You can see it as a tiny dot at the facing mountain range at the following picture.

There is also a hike to the Massane watchtower if you can’t get enough. It is 4.2 kilometers long and goes in altitude 550 meters up.

Unfortunately, the Madeloc watchtower itself can’t be climbed, since it is closed - nowadays it is used as a radio relay station. However, the impression of the Madeloc and Massane watchtowers as guards of the valleys beneath makes the hike worth doing!

Very nice climb up to 2km before the top where the road gets a lot worse and you don't have any grip on the road because of the pebbles, not very handy considering these are the steepest parts. At 800m from the top we had to stop because it became too dangerous (also because of the gusts). Until this part, the road surface is good and you have nice views over the charming harbour town of Collioure.

The Challengers of the 2024 Giro d’Italia and Tour de France

We look beyond Tadej Pogačar and Jonas Vingegaard and into the riders who are set to bring the heat to this year’s Grand Tours.

tdf and giro dark horses

Primož Roglič

Cian uijtdebroeks, ben o’connor, geraint thomas, alexsandr vlasov, simon yates, jai hindley, sepp kuss, juan ayuso, and adam yates.

As we grow nearer to Grand Tour season, the story is no doubt going to center around cycling’s two biggest names: Tadej Pogačar and Jonas Vingegaard. Can Pog pull off the Giro/Tour double? If he’s going to, he’ll have to vanquish Vingegaard, the only rider who’s been able to go toe-to-toe with Pogačar. On the other side of the coin, can Vingegaard go three-for-three, becoming just the ninth rider to win at least three Tours (and the sixth to win three consecutively)?

Here are the contenders primed to challenge cycling's dominant duo in the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France :

Remco Evenepoel

77th tour of spain 2022 stage 18

There’s no denying that Evenepoel is one of the most talented riders in the WorldTour ranks. And with a pair of Liège-Bastonge-Liège wins and a Vuelta win, he already has a palmarès that most riders dream of. But after a bitterly disappointing Giro abandonment last season and years of answering questions about when he’s going to race the Tour, the time may be here for Evenepoel to exorcize some of the demons and answer the questions that always seem to be following him around.

Yes, he’s won a Grand Tour, but it wasn’t the Grand Tour. Maybe 2024, his Tour debut, is the year to rectify that for and with his Soudal-Quick Step team.

france cycling paris nice stage two

With a new team in Bora-Hansgrohe, Roglič will once again be looking to avenge one of the most bitter losses in cycling history: to recapture the Tour de France win that he was just one heartbreaking stage away from in 2020.

That 2020 loss, combined with Vingegaard’s unexpected ascension, pushed Roglič to the fringes of the Grand Boucle. Now, he’ll head into France as the undisputed team leader. And while Roglič’s had a less-than-stellar season thus far, according to Bora’s performance director Rolf Aldag, all eyes are on the Tour for Roglič and his team.

3rd o gran cami ntilde o the historical route 2024 stage 4

Just twenty years old, Ujitdebroeks is heading into the Giro with expectations that are simultaneously high and reasonable. Early reports are that the Visma-Lease a Bike all-rounder will be chasing both stage wins and the pink jersey.

Uijtdebroeks finished eighth in last summer’s Vuelta a España and none of the seven riders ahead of him are slated to start the Giro. Of course, it’ll help his cause that he’ll have Wout van Aert, perhaps the world’s greatest domestique, working for him throughout Italy.

40th vuelta ciclista a la regioacuten de murcia quotcosta calidaquot 2024

Last year, Ben O’Connor asked his French team, Decathlon-AS2R La Mondiale, if he could shift his focus from the Tour de France to the Giro d’Italia. After two consecutive Tours marred by crashes, sickness, and just plain bad luck, O’Connor is hoping to right his ship with a go at the pink jersey.

To the surprise of many, AG2R acquiesced and, as O’Connor has the most WorldTour points of any Giro entrants as of this writing, early returns say they may have made the right move.

50th volta ao algarve em bicicleta 2024 stage 2

Like Pogačar, Ineos Grenadiers’ Geraint Thomas is targeting the Giro/Tour double. He’ll be the team’s sole GC hunter in Italy, as he aims to avenge the pink jersey he lost to Primož Roglič on the penultimate stage of last year’s Giro.

The picture in France gets a bit murkier, as Ineos will be sending Tom Pidcock and Carlos Rodríguez both to the start line in June, making Thomas’s hunt for a second yellow jersey—he won the Tour 2018—a far less straightforward proposition.

82nd paris nice 2024 stage 7

The 27-year-old Bora-Hansgrohe rider raised plenty of eyebrows at the dawn of this season when he said he would let the road decide whether he would race for or against his new teammate—and presumed team leader—Primož Roglič.

Well, the reality of that statement might come to a head sooner rather than later. Vlasov has been looking strong this spring, with his most eye-catching performance coming in Paris-Nice, where he finished fifth overall, seventh in the points classification, and fourth in the KOM race. Roglič, on the other hand, finished that race tenth, eleventh, and tenth in those very same classifications.

4th alula tour 2024 stage 5

Whereas so many riders are bolstered by hype, Simon Yates’s chances for a surprise Tour victory are supported by the fact that he just always seems to be there, near the front, toe-to-toe with the best and the brightest. The Jayco-AlUla leader, who finished fourth overall in 2023, will be making his seventh Tour appearance, so he knows the race as well as just about any of the other contenders. But more than anything, he’ll likely need a few breaks to roll his way.

110th tour de france 2023 stage 5

The 2022 Giro champion is expected to ride in support of Roglič in the Tour. But we all know how mercurial Roglič can be, which means Hindley may be presented with a sudden and unexpected chance to fight for the yellow jersey.

I’m combining these three, as their longshot potential to make a run at GC would depend on Vingeaard and/or Pogačar blowing up or abandoning, neither of which either does very often. Kuss has shown that he has the strength and the grit to win a Grand Tour, but his shot at the yellow jersey would wholly depend on whether or not Vingegaard is at or near the front.

The same goes for Ayuso and Yates, who will both ride in support of Pogačar this summer. Yates finished third in last year’s Tour, proving that he’s much more than just another domestique. Meanwhile, all signs have been pointing to UAE Team Emirates grooming the 21-year-old Ayuso to be something of a 1A to Pogačar.

Tadej Pogacar Wins Tour Of Catalonia After Fourth Stage Victory

  • Order Reprints
  • Print Article

Tadej Pogacar sprinted to an impressive fourth stage victory of the week as he sealed his Tour of Catalonia triumph on Sunday.

The Slovenian two-time Tour de France champion edged a chaotic sprint to take stage seven, adding to his stage two, three and six triumphs, blowing away his general classification competition.

Pogacar emerged ahead of French duo Dorian Godon and Guillaume Martin, second and third respectively, in a frenzied finish to the 143.5 kilometre stage, which started and finished in Barcelona.

"I'm so happy to take the win -- it wasn't the original plan," said Pogacar.

Pogacar's UAE team-mate Joao Almeida had a move shut down in the final kilometres but Pogacar snatched victory.

"Joao Almeida set a good pace on the climb and we were a small group in the front," added Pogacar.

"He made a good attack on the last small climb and almost came to the finish. I wish he could arrive, but I'm happy to take this win, too."

The UAE Team Emirates rider won the race by three minutes 41 seconds from Spaniard Mikel Landa, with Egan Bernal third, a full five minutes and three seconds behind Pogacar.

The 25-year-old carved out a big lead on the second stage and nobody threatened to depose him for the rest of the week.

Pogacar is aiming for an ambitious Giro-Tour double in 2024, hoping to become the first man to win both since Marco Pantani in 1998.

2024 Could Be a Make-Or-Break Year for the Tour de France Femmes

If there’s one depressing fact I’ve learned in nearly two decades of covering women’s cycling, it’s that, sadly, there’s rarely a moment to rest on one’s laurels in this sport—and that’s particularly true for race organizers, and team owners.

Just because a race does fantastically well one year in terms of unprecedented levels of viewership and media coverage or because a team is arguably the absolute best in the world doesn’t guarantee anything. It’s all easy come, easy go. That’s why I’m nervous about the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift and why I believe that this year could be the most pivotal year for the race.

But why am I worried about the Tour de France Femmes in year three? After all, viewership numbers have been high, enthusiasm hasn’t waned, and sports bars are full of fans screaming for Demi Vollering and Kasia Niewiadoma. And yet... There are a few important factors to consider.

Last year, Zwift’s Kate Verroneau told me that the second year of the TDFF was scary for her: The first year, you’re riding a wave of hype. In the second year, the race has to stand as a great race, not just a “first.” What about the third year?

“There’s no kind of resting on the fact that last year was really successful,” Veronneau said then. “I look at it and think, ‘Last year was pretty easy sell: It was the first women’s Tour de France in over 30 years. That was easy to get the media on board, easy to get sponsors on board. It was the first time that that huge of an audience watched women’s racing.”

Year two was hugely successful, but what about year three?

The sponsorship dynamics at play

First, there’s the simple fact that this is year three of Zwift’s four-year commitment to the Tour de France Femmes in partnership with ASO. That means if Zwift isn’t planning to continue its support or is going to cut back its sponsorship budget, this is the year the race needs to look for a new sponsor.

Leaving it entirely to next year, the final year in their contract, is foolhardy. So I have to imagine that there’s some buzz happening behind the scenes already. I haven’t heard any scuttlebutt about them giving up their title sponsorship position, to be clear, but considering Zwift just had a round of layoffs and a shuffle in their C-suite , who knows where they’re heading? Hopefully into another lengthy contract, but it’s unclear. My fingers are crossed.

Viewership challenges

Viewership this year will also be more important than ever. High viewership numbers mean a better chance of securing new or renewed sponsorship dollars, and TdFF viewership has been undeniably impressive. But this year is going to make that tricky. The men’s Tour de France and the Tour de France Femmes are separated this year by the Olympics. That means three weeks between the races, rather than the men’s race ending on the day the women’s race began.

In the past two years, it was easy to just continue tuning in if you’d been watching the men’s race. This year, viewers will have to actively seek it out starting August 12—the day after the Olympics finish. That is a lot of TV watching for cycling/sports fans to contend with. While serious fans will still tune in, those ‘medium’ fans may not.

The state of the cycling industry

Then, there’s the cycling industry landscape. Brands like Trek and Specialized are slashing budgets , and Shimano is reporting quarter after quarter of losses . To blithely assume that there’s a cycling company capable of taking Zwift’s place as title sponsor in the current landscape is a mistake.

I say all this not to be discouraging. It’s meant to be a rallying cry. What does this all mean for you, the person reading this?

I want to believe that this race will survive and thrive in the same way that Le Tour has for over a century. But I also know that it takes more than love to keep a race of this magnitude running. It takes cold, hard cash. It takes commitment from big businesses that often see women’s cycling as a line item that they can scrap when it’s time to tighten up their belts. It took decades to get back to a point where we have this race. It’s happened before, it’s been lost before. Let’s not let it happen again.

It’s time to get fired up and ensure that the Tour de France Femmes isn’t just a blip in the cycling history books. Mark your calendars, set a Google alert for the Tour de France Femmes, follow racers on social media, and plan watch parties—let’s make this the loudest Tour de France Femmes yet.
