Ever wonder what an artist’s studio really looks like?

Philadelphia Open Studio Tours (POST) allows everyone to take a sneak peek behind the scenes of some of the city’s most creative spaces.

For two weekends every October, artists around the city open their studios to curious visitors, inviting them to talk, check out how they work and purchase artwork.

With nearly 300 participating artists spanning 25-plus neighborhoods, there’s a huge range of art forms to explore, including painting, photography, woodworking, textile art, ceramics, light sculpture and more.

This year’s Philadelphia Open Studio Tours take place October 14 & 15 and October 21 & 22, 2023 , from noon to 6 p.m. each day.

The Experience

Philadelphia Open Studio Tours — the largest tour of its kind in the region — gives art aficionados (and the artistically curious) the chance to meet hundreds of Philadelphia’s most talented creatives while also exploring a bunch of the city’s thriving neighborhoods.

Tips you can use the day of an art studio tour to make visitors feel welcome in your space.

It's the day of your big art studio tour. You're abuzz with excitement and probably a bit nervous, too. You've done all you can ahead of time to prepare and promote your open studio. It's time to make visitors feel welcome and be a gracious host to your studio guests.

1.  Ensure Your Studio or Home Entrance is Completely Inviting

It can feel a bit disconcerting to just walk into a stranger's home (which is what visitors do on a studio tour). Believe me, I have wandered around the outside of homes on studio tours looking for signs to assure me I could walk in.

Do ensure the entrance to your studio or home is clearly marked with plenty of signs welcoming guests and letting them know they are welcome to come in.

Art studio tour organizers will provide you with official signs to mark your location, but you may also decide to add some signs of your own directing people to the correct entrance if it is not clear where people should enter, or telling people to come on in.

2.  Consider Serving Refreshments

Serving refreshments is not always practical. It won't be right for everyone. But sometimes simple refreshments can help set a mood and make visitors to your studio feel welcome.

Art easels. Text overlay - Guide to participating in an artist studio tour.

You can use refreshments to create a homey, welcoming vibe. Imagine, for example, customers walking into your home on a brisk fall day and being greeted by the aroma of warm, spiced apple cider in your crock pot. I'd definitely linger in a space like that.

Be sure to serve simple, easy to eat or drink items. You don't want people to be too distracted by the food or drink, and you don't want to serve anything that might make a mess in your studio.

A few things to avoid include:

  • Avoid anything that is sticky or messy that might get on your work
  • Avoid anything that requires concentration to eat, that would take visitors' attention away from your work
  • Avoid anything that is difficult to serve. You want to concentrate on talking with your customers; you don't want to spend the day focused on serving food.

3.  Be Prepared to Talk About Your Work

Be ready to greet visitors. A few simple opening lines that you can use throughout the day will help to start conversations.

You can build conversations by:

  • Asking visitors how they are enjoying the tour
  • Talking about your work, what inspires you, what makes your work special (especially things that might not be immediately obvious)
  • Talking about other shows you are participating in

Once you get the conversation started, it will likely flow fairly naturally. Remember, your visitors made a specific trip to your studio because they were interested in your work, so they will be interested in hearing more about how you do what you do.

If you are in your studio it will probably be fairly natural to show your process in order to engage visitors.

If you are not in your studio, have samples out that show your process whenever possible. Perhaps you could show a work in progress or some of the tools you use to create your work.

4.  Find Ways to Encourage a Second Contact with Interested Visitors

Be sure to tell your visitors about a show you have coming up at an art gallery, or classes that you teach, or your website. Provide marketing materials (business cards or brochures) visitors can take away so they can find you again easily.

Consider providing a guest book that you encourage visitors to sign, which will allow you to grow a mailing list of people you can contact whenever you have an upcoming show. You'll find some fun tips to encourage people to leave their email addresses here .

Sometimes art studio tours are more about building your name and making a first contact with people. This is particularly true for people who sell higher-end items. You'll want to be able to build on that first connection by giving customers a way to connect with you again.

5. You'll Need an Assistant

Don't try to do a studio tour by yourself without an assistant. If your studio gets busy or you need a quick break, you'll be happy to have the help.

Do be careful to avoid taking long or frequent breaks, though, because your visitors have come to see you (the artist) in your work space. But if you've been able to have a quick break when you need one, you'll be able to give visitors your full attention. Likewise, if your studio gets busy, your assistant will be able to speak with guests while you're busy with others.

Moving Forward

Sip wine. Nibble complimentary tapas from wandering restaurateurs. Admire artistic works at unique galleries.

And meet the artists.

Welcome to the San Jose del Cabo Art Walk!

It’s a delightful evening of strolling the historic art district in the Mexican town of San Jose del Cabo – and one of the most fun and unique things to do in Los Cabos at night. Not to mention that it’s also free.

When planning your Cabo vacation , you won’t want to miss it!

Vacationers enjoying the San Jose del Cabo Art Walk

San Jose Del Cabo Art Walk

Every Thursday evening between November and June, dozens of art galleries stay open until 9:00 pm so visitors and locals can enjoy this popular free cultural event.

This Art Walk, in fact, is one of the big differences between San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas .

Many of the galleries are high-end fine art establishments.

Several also feature top Mexican works of art.

art studio tours

At the Cabo Art Walk, you can view everything from hand-painted pottery, Shona African sculptures, blown glass, contemporary oil paintings and handmade Chiapas textiles to jewelry.

You’ll even find sculptures made from 25-million-year-old amber.

Who knows, you might even find the perfect piece of art to take home as an authentic souvenir !

San Jose del Cabo Art District

art studio tours

The Gallery District covers several blocks in the heart of San Jose del Cabo.

Here, you’ll find many fine art galleries showcasing original paintings, prints, jewelry, sculptures and other art works by local, national and international artists.

They’re sprinkled around a variety of equally fine restaurants in San Jose del Cabo.

The Gallery District Association created the Art Walk event to attract visitors to explore the areas further away from San Jose del Cabo’s main square.

The cobbled streets of the Gallery District were upgraded to make them more walkable and buildings were refurbished to make them more attractive.

Since it started, the San Jose del Cabo Thursday Art Walk has become a smash success, growing in popularity each year.

The local government now closes down the streets to traffic each Thursday evening so they’re pedestrian-friendly.

Dancers and street performers provide entertainment. Many of the restaurants and bars have live music too.

Some Cabo art galleries we like

Casa Dahlia : Abstract landscapes, Naïve folk art, paintings and sculptures from some of Baja’s best contemporary artists

Desertica Art Gallery : Paintings of Frida Kahlo, pottery, sculptures and other unique art works by Mexican artists

El Armario : Cute little combination art gallery and coffee shop, a few blocks from the center of San Jose del Cabo

Frank Arnold Gallery : Dramatic oil paintings and cast bronze sculptures by Frank Arnold

Galeria Corsica : Museum-quality art, including sculptures of the chubby little Timoteo figure we first saw in PV on its Art Walk

Galeria de Ida Victoria : Paintings, sculptures, prints and photography by established and emerging contemporary artists from Mexico and around the world

Ivan Guaderrama Art Gallery : Contemporary art gallery focusing on expressions of faith, with paintings, glass objects and welding works

Muvezi Gallery : Stone sculptures by Shona artists from Zimbabwe

Patricia Mendoza Art Gallery : Contemporary art by some of Mexico’s top artists

Fun stuff for sale in the Desertica Art Gallery, San Jose del Cabo

The Los Cabos Art Walk is loads of fun. How can you beat viewing art with a complimentary glass of wine or margarita in hand?

(It’s similar to the free Art Walk in Puerto Vallarta, held on Wednesday evenings in winter, which we’ve also enjoyed.)

Each year when we visit Cabo  for sun-and-sand family reunions, we make a point of hitting the Art Walk in San Jose Del Cabo, followed by dinner in town.

It’s a great little day trip from Cabo San Lucas – or should we say “half-day, late afternoon trip”?

What to know if you go

The Art Walk in San Jose del Cabo is a popular cultural event on Thursday evenings!

Be sure to make dinner reservations if you plan to eat out afterwards in town. The restaurants book up well in advance on Thursday evenings.

Degrees Offered

  • Bachelors of Art: Concentration in Studio Practice (BA)
  • Minor Studio Art

About the Studio Practice Program

The BA in Art Studio Practice concentration allows students to pursue a general study in the visual arts, or to create their own curriculum combining studies in visual arts with other fields. For students preferring a broad art background instead of an intense specialization, this program provides students with a variety of art experiences.

Students enrolled in the Studio Practice concentration are not necessarily preparing for a career in art or design, although many use the program as preparation for graduate level studies. The required studio work is intended to intensify awareness of visual art forms and introduce a variety of technical processes and theoretical approaches. Concentrations and emphases are designed to offer opportunities to study digital media art, photography, pictorial art and spatial art. Studio Practice also provides a basic program leading to a teaching credential in art.

Admission to the BA programs is open to all University students.

In addition to general education (GE) coursework, the BA degree in Art, Studio Practice Concentration requires coursework in core courses that constitute a general preparation for the major, concentration, or emphasis.

Program Learning Outcomes

PLO1 (Art Knowledge) Graduates will be able to analyze and research visual and conceptual problems and both apply and explain their use of basic design principles, concepts, tools, techniques, media, materials, formats, and visual languages to solve those problems. We expect our students to bring their expertise in finding visual‐verbal solutions to problems as they embark on a lifetime of self‐ and professional employment in a variety of careers. As students they will demonstrate their development and application of art knowledge in a wide range of studio courses, culminating in a capstone course.

PLO2 (Art Skills) Graduates will be able to demonstrate increasing skills in the use of diverse materials, tools, and media, and be able to explain and evaluate success/failure in individual and group critiques. We expect our graduates to be lifelong problem‐identifiers and problem solvers, always on the lookout for new and better skills. Prior to graduation, they will demonstrate their making/evaluating skills in studio courses and their skills of self‐assessment and explanation in a sequence of interdisciplinary professional courses and in a capstone course.

PLO3 (Art Values) Graduates will demonstrate their commitment to valuing art’s role in offering cultural critique and addressing issues of social responsibility in a global society. As creative professionals, our graduates will, we hope, assume leadership roles in engaging with social and cultural change—as teachers, as critics, as spokespersons for important issues that cannot yet be imagined. As undergraduates, our students will demonstrate their understanding of the values of contemporary art in their visual and written responses to class assignments in studio courses and in the interdisciplinary core and capstone courses (where these qualities will be assessed), in their work on collaborative group projects, in the successful articulation of their ideas in exhibitions and artist statements.

PLO4 (History/Theory) Graduates will apply their knowledge of visual history and theory to their creative endeavors and to their professional practice. They will be able to speak and write clearly about art and global culture, using appropriate terminology and demonstrating their understanding of the contemporary art world. They will demonstrate their ability to place their own work within the broader context of historical and contemporary art and ideas. Our graduates will commit to continued personal engagement with intellectual issues in contemporary art and culture. As students, they will demonstrate their understanding of visual history and theory in assignments completed for their art history courses and their understanding of the intellectual context and historical precedents of their own work in assignments completed for their professional core and capstone courses.
