If fried food isn't your thing, go in for a salad with fresh watercress, the peppery green that the Hampshire region is famous for. You'll also find upscale fare based on England's most-loved flavors: Try chicken with Indian-inspired vegetable pakora and tandoori puree or braised Hampshire beef with ale cream.

Various antiques at a market

Shop for big-name brands galore at Westquay Shopping Centre, the premier shopping destination of the South Coast. Head to Bedford Place for independent shops and boutiques — the country's oldest traditional shoemaker is located here. On weekends, wander down the road to Bar Street to check out the local market for antiques, crafts, vintage accessories and jewelry.

Top things to do before your cruise from the uk, experience the wonder of stonehenge.

One of the most iconic excursions to go on before Southampton cruises is a visit to Stonehenge. Famous for its Neolithic engineering as well as its mysteriousness, Stonehenge features a stone circle that was built from massive stones weighing as much as 25 tons that had to have been transported incredibly long distances using only the simple tools they had available at the time. It’s an incredible experience to walk around the circle and imagine a former civilization constructing it thousands of years ago.

Shop on Oxford Street

Spanning 1.5 miles, London’s Oxford Street is a shopper’s paradise. As one of the world’s largest retail streets, you’ll find a little bit of everything for every type of budget, from high-street brands like Topshop and River Island to legendary department stores such as Marks & Spencer and Selfridges. Squeeze in a shopping session before your Southampton cruise, or simply stroll through the pedestrian-friendly street, where you’ll also be able to enjoy dozens of trendy restaurants, cafes, and bars.

Top Sights & Attractions Near Southampton

Windsor castle.

Dating back to the 11th century, Windsor Castle has served as the royal home for over 39 monarchs over the span of 900 years, making it the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world. Visit the State Apartments, where Queen Elizabeth used to host her official visits. See Queen Mary’s doll house from the 1920s, which was built to include electricity and running water. Stop in St. George’s Chapel, the site where Prince Harry and Meghan Markle got married in 2018.

Visit Runnymede, the place where the Magna Carta was signed in 1215. The picturesque meadows became the unofficial birthplace of democracy over 800 years ago, when King James signed the Magna Carta into existence. There are several memorials to explore in the site, including the Magna Carta Memorial, the JFK Memorial (a plaque that commemorates the former U.S. president’s legacy after his assassination), and the Commonwealth Air Forces Memorial, which includes the names of the more than 20,000 members of the Allied Air Forces who died during World War II.

River Thames

As the home of several popular landmarks, including the London Eye and Tower Bridge, the River Thames is the longest river in England and a quintessential London attraction. Take a river cruise down its gentle waters and admire the cityscape in the distance. Stroll along the Thames and stop for lunch or dinner at a riverside restaurant. Cross the bridge by either walking over the iconic Tower Bridge or the futuristic Millennium Bridge—a great spot to take a selfie with the Thames in the background.

When can I cruise from Southampton

Our ships sail from Southampton between April and October. No matter which month you choose to travel, we’ll transport you to Europe’s most desirable destinations. For warm, sunny weather and smaller crowds, the best time to take a cruise from Southampton is generally between April and June or September and October. If you’re planning on bringing the whole family along, you can’t beat our summer sailings around the stunning Mediterranean.

What food should I try in Southampton?

For a quintessential English dining experience, look for menus with the following items: Bakewell pudding, a dessert with a pastry base that has an almond filling and is topped with jam and icing; spotted dick, another dessert pudding featuring currants and raisins; Cornish pastry, a savory pastry filled with meat and vegetables; Lancashire hotpot, a stew made with lamb and potatoes; fish and chips, with battered, deep-fried fish served alongside fries; and curry, since England is known for its Indian and Bangladeshi food, particularly chicken tikka masala.

When you’re in England, don’t miss the chance to savor the country’s iconic traditional breakfast of bacon, sausage, fried eggs, baked beans, mushrooms, black pudding, a roasted tomato, and toast.

Afternoon tea is also a popular way to get a taste of England. A traditional English tea usually has scones with jam, butter, clotted cream, and tea. A couple of the best places to get tea during your Southampton cruise port of call are at Grand Café, which offers two different types of afternoon tea, and Elsie’s Tea Room, which has a vintage feel.

In search of wildlife on a one-day cruise off the coast of Cornwall, UK

The Cornish coast is the ideal starting point for exploring the English Channel on a state-of-the-art catamaran, spying everything from majestic dolphins to Atlantic bluefin tuna.

It’s called the ‘sunlight zone’ — paradoxically, I feel, because as I look over the boat’s side into the steely-blue water lapping against the hull, all I see is a dark, mysterious mass. This uppermost realm of the ocean is more formally known as the ‘epipelagic’, where the sun is able to penetrate and spark life into a menagerie of marine flora and fauna — like the seagrass visible on my port side, or the little fish and molluscs scooped up by the black-feathered shags gliding to starboard. The ‘twilight zone’ is what lies beneath that — a shadowy realm of ocean giants like whales, sharks and colossal squid. Venture even deeper for the midnight and abyssal zones, about which scientists know very little. Their ominous blackness conceal organisms you could swear were interplanetary. But Captain Keith won’t be taking us there — thank goodness — as much as visiting Cornwall’s remote west feels as though you’ve reached the ends of the earth.

Today, Cornwall’s legendary sea captain is taking us on a voyage from Falmouth Bay to the craggy coastline of the Lizard Peninsula aboard catamaran The Spirit of the Seas . As I settle into my seat, I hear a gaggle of twitchers chatter about the sea birds we’re likely to spot — skuas, phalaropes, razorbills and others — while a wide-eyed couple at the front of the boat anxiously swallow the sea sickness tablets they forgot to take two hours ago. Beth, a young Bristolian woman sitting next to me, admits she’s not so interested in the avian sightings, what she’s really looking forward to is the chance to spot a humpback whale.

“Whales are being spotted in Cornish waters more and more in recent years,” Captain Keith declares in his pre-departure brief, puffing out his chest with pride, “including the odd humpback — but that’s rare.” Beth blinks away her disappointment. “I’ve spotted over 40 gorgeous minke and fin whales this year alone, though, so keep your eyes peeled.”

The greater number of whales is a sure sign of recovery, we’re told. Careful management of shipping and fishing practices in this coastal county has thrown a lifeline to these threatened megafauna, as well as other marine life. And tangibly so, because as soon as we’re away from the estuary, we’re catapulted into a ‘work-up’ — that’s captain talk for a hunting expedition that explodes to the surface. We’re surrounded on all sides by torpedo-like Atlantic bluefin tuna launching their strong, silver bodies into the air — the crescent shape of their tail fins unmistakable. Having been fished to near oblivion until the 1960s, tuna fishing has been strictly regulated in the UK ever since, the frenzy we’re witnessing is a sign of better times for the 1,500lb beasts.

We continue on to The Manacles, heaven for perching birds, hell for passing ships. These fangs of razor-sharp rock protruding from the reef below us sank the HMS Primrose in 1809 — with just one of the 126 crew surviving — and many other vessels besides. Today, it’s where coastal birds rest their wings and daredevil divers brave the depths to explore a cemetery of mangled shipwrecks.

“Purple sandpiper!” somebody shouts, initiating a rush of binocular-wielding birders to port side that prompts Captain Keith to reach for the intercom. “Could we try to keep roughly six people on either side of the boat to distribute the weight,” he interjects. “Seal at the bow everybody! Atlantic grey seals at the bow!”

A little while later, the sun lowers on the horizon as we head back to Falmouth Bay, the sunlight zone beneath taking on an ethereal new form. Sitting at the bow, I’m mesmerised by the shades of honey shimmering amid the blue, the sea’s drifting minerals glittering up at me like gold dust. As I close my eyes to soak in autumn’s ever-waning warmth, I hear a tearing rip of water beneath — something is travelling at speed, and it’s directly in front of us. I scan the sea for life and a necklace of bubbles rises and pops at the surface. Soon after, a dolphin’s smooth, blue-grey body leaps from the water. She’s guiding us home. Her calf appears at her side, the stripes of its foetal folds still visible by the dorsal fin. As the pod swells to four, five, six, I remember my duty to inform the others of the sighting and selfishly consider whether I’d prefer to enjoy it alone.

“Dolphins at the bow!” roars Captain Keith. “I repeat — common dolphins at the bow!”

Middle East latest: 'Yemeni navy' ordered ship to change course before deadly Houthi attack

US officials have confirmed the deaths of three sailors in a Houthi attack on a ship in the Gulf of Aden. Footage has emerged of crew members being rescued after the first fatal attack by the rebel group in one of the world's busiest trade lanes.

Mourners have gathered at a mass grave in southern Gaza for the burial of more than a dozen people killed in Israel's offensive.

A crowd watched on as the dead, whose bodies were released by Israel, were buried in Rafah.

The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza said at least 30,800 Palestinians have been killed and 72,298 wounded since 7 October.

A senior Hamas official says Israel has "thwarted" mediators' efforts to reach a ceasefire deal.

Sami Abu Zuhri said Israel was refusing Hamas's demands to end its military operation in Gaza, withdraw troops, ensure freedom of aid movement and allow displaced to people return to their homes.

The militant group said in a separate statement that its delegation left Cairo yesterday, but talks are set to continue at a later time until an agreement is reached.

Negotiators had been pushing to secure a deal in time for the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, which begins on Sunday.

Footage has emerged of sailors being rescued after the first fatal attack by Yemen's Houthi rebels in one of the world's busiest trade lanes.

The attack on True Confidence in the Gulf of Aden killed at least three people, US officials said, with two confirmed as Filipino (see previous post).

A US warship and the Indian navy assisted rescue efforts.

Footage shows sailors being pulled to safety by the Indian navy after the attack yesterday morning.

Sailors are helped from a life raft after abandoning the ship and later crew members are attended to by emergency services.

Two of the victims of the Houthi attack have been identified as Filipino by the Philippines' ministry for migrant workers.

It extended condolences to the victims' families and said their identities wouldn't be disclosed. It added that two other Filipinos were severely injured.

The ministry called for "continued diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions and to address the causes of the current conflict in the Middle East".

By Adam Parker, OSINT editor

At around 0001 UTC on Wednesday morning, the Barbados-flagged cargo vessel True Confidence was in the Gulf of Aden and unexpectedly changed course to head away from the Red Sea.

The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said the ship had been receiving messages claiming to be from the Yemeni navy. The messages were being sent for around 30 minutes and were ordering the merchant ship to change its course.

At 0341 UTC Wednesday, True Confidence, which is Greek-operated, was slowing and came to a stop in the minutes after.

Tracking data from MarineTraffic shows the last known location of the ship was around 0429 UTC.

Since the start of Houthi attacks in the region, it's common for ships to turn off their tracking when travelling through the Red Sea.

The UKMTO said the incident started at 0840 UTC, about 50 nautical miles southwest of Yemen’s port of Aden. Other vessels in the area reported "a loud bang, and a large plume of smoke".

They later reported that a vessel had been hit and suffered damage. They also said True Confidence had been abandoned by the crew.

The Indian navy released a rescue video of 21 crew, they say they arrived at the location at 1345 UTC.

Three sailors died and at least four crew members were injured in the attack.

Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the Israel-Hamas war and the wider Middle East crisis.

The deaths of at least three sailors in a Houthi attack on a vessel off Yemen yesterday marked a serious escalation in the shipping crisis in the Rea Sea and nearby waters.

The Houthis claimed responsibility for the attack, falsely declaring the True Confidence to be US-owned.

The ship, which was hit by a missile about 50 nautical miles southwest of the Yemeni port of Aden, was abandoned and lifeboats detected in the water shortly afterward.

Our  international affairs editor Dominic Waghorn described the development as "significant and grave", illustrating that British and American strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen are not setting the deterrent they are intended to.

Here are the other key developments from the past 24 hours:

  • Lord Cameron met Israeli war cabinet minister Benny Gantz in London, and had a warning for him that the UK's patience is wearing thin with the suffering in Gaza;
  • A draft US resolution to the UN Security Council, which backs an immediate six-week ceasefire and the release of all hostages, was leaked;
  • The Israel Defence Forces claimed it had killed a Hamas operative responsible for firing rockets at Israeli troops from central Gaza.

A Houthi missile attack has killed three sailors on a merchant ship, US Central Command has confirmed.

They are the first fatalities reported since the Iran-aligned Yemeni group began strikes against shipping in one of the world's busiest trade lanes.

The Houthis claimed responsibility for the attack, which set the Greek-owned, Barbados-flagged ship True Confidence ablaze around 50 nautical miles off the coast of Yemen's port of Aden.

At least four other crew members were injured, with three in a critical condition.

A US warship and the Indian navy are on the scene trying to assist in rescue efforts.

Lord Cameron, the foreign secretary, has said suffering in Gaza is now at the point of tipping into famine.

Starvation has been widely reported from inside Gaza, particularly in the north, where aid has rarely been delivered.

Here we look at how famine is classified and what it takes for one to be declared.

What is famine?

Famine is assessed by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), an initiative made up of more than a dozen UN agencies, regional bodies and aid groups.

When the following criteria are met, famine is declared:

  • At least 20% of the population suffers extreme food shortages;
  • One in three children is acutely malnourished;
  • Two people out of every 10,000 die each day from starvation, malnutrition or disease.

Famine has been declared twice in the past 13 years: in Somalia in 2011 and in parts of South Sudan in 2017.

Is there famine in Gaza?

The IPC said the 20% threshold had already been exceeded in December.

At that time, it warned the remaining two thresholds "may also be breached at some point" in the coming months.

"There is a risk of famine in the projection period through May 2024 if the current situation persists or worsens," it said.

The UN said last month that 25% of Gaza's 2.3 million people were "estimated to be facing catastrophic levels of deprivation and starvation".

The IPC is due to release a new analysis in the middle of this month.

Who is responsible for welfare in Gaza?

The United Nations views Israel as the occupying power in Gaza and says the Israeli military has a responsibility to facilitate humanitarian operations.

Under the 1949 Geneva Conventions on the laws of war: "To the fullest extent of the means available to it, the occupying power has the duty of ensuring the food and medical supplies of the population."

Israeli leaders have long argued that Gaza and the West Bank are not formally occupied on the basis that they were captured from Jordan and Egypt during the 1967 war rather than from a sovereign Palestine.

They say it is up to humanitarian organisations to deliver aid and that Israel is committed to improving the humanitarian situation.

The US has called on Iran to dilute all of its enriched uranium that could be used in the future to create nuclear weapons.

Reports suggest Tehran has enriched the fuel to 60% purity - shy of the 90% required for weapons-grade levels.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said in a confidential report to member states last week that Iran's stock of uranium enriched to up to 60% had fallen slightly in the past quarter as it had diluted, or "downblended", more of its most highly enriched material than it had produced.

However, Iran has enough material to create two nuclear weapons from a theoretical perspective, if it is properly enriched, the report said.

"Iran should downblend all, not just some, of its 60% stockpile, and stop all production of uranium enriched to 60% entirely," a US statement on Iran at the IAEA board of governors' meeting.

"We continue to have serious concerns related to the stockpile of highly enriched uranium that Iran continues to maintain," the US statement said.

"No other country today is producing uranium enriched to 60% for the purpose Iran claims and Iran's actions are counter to the behavior of all other non-nuclear weapons states party to the NPT (Non-Proliferation Treaty)," it added.
