The large collection of terracotta soldiers, located in Lintong District, northeast suburb Xian, turns Xian one of the world’s most renowned tourist destinations, attracting more than ten million visitors each year, including many world leaders and celebrities. Ancient people of Qin Dynasty took 39 years to built this burial army to protect Emperor Qinshihuang in his afterlife, while currently, it remains as an extricable puzzle all curious about. Admittedly, the large area of the pits, great numbers of different kinds of soldiers, well-laid battle positions, vivid life-size figurines in different facial expressions and gestures and amazing art handicrafts perfectly explain why the Terracotta Army is praised as “the Eighth Wonder of Ancient World” and listed as UNESCO Cultural Heritage not long after it was found.

How to Visit Terracotta Army - A Comprehensive Visitor's Guide

One-day self-guided terracotta army visit plan.

Most visitors will travel to Xi’an first, stay a night at a hotel in downtown for a good rest, and then take a one-day tour to the Terracotta Army on the next day.

1. Learn some basic facts before visiting Terracotta Army

Location: in Lintong District of Xi’an, about 40 km (25 mi) from downtown Area: 2.078 hectares (5.135 acres) Built in: 247 or 246 BC – 208 BC Number of Terracotta Warriors and Horses: Nearly 8,000 Opening Hours: Peak Season from March 16 to November 15: 8:30 - 18:00; off season from November 16 to March 15: 8:30 - 17:30 What to See: Pit 1, Pit 2, Pit 3, Bronze Chariots and Horses Exhibition Hall Read more: 10 Amazing Terracotta Army Facts You May Not Know

2. Get the entrance ticket in advance

The entrance ticket for the Terracotta Army costs CNY 120, whether it is in the peak travel season or slack season. As only 65,000 entrance tickets are issued daily, it’s advised you to get a ticket in advance.

How to Buy Terracotta Warriors Tickets?

The easiest way is to book a ticket from TravelChinaGuide. If you know Chinese and have a Chinese cell phone number, you can book it directly on the official website of the Terracotta Army. Some tourists may want to buy a ticket only after they arrive at the scenic spot, but this is not recommended, because you may spend a long time queuing before the ticket window and there is risk that tickets are sold out.  No matter you book ticket from TravelChinaGuide, official website, or on site, your passport or passport information will be required as the Terracotta Army Museum has introduced the real-name ticketing policy. In addition, you need to take your passport for inspection when entering the scenic area.

3. Set off early in the morning for your one day Terracotta Army trip.

It’s strongly advised to get up and set out early in the morning to visit Terracotta Army, let’s say 7:00 am, to miss the large tour groups which usually arrive at around 10:00 am. If you do not mind having lunch late, you can also visit at noon during lunch time.

More tips on how to avoid the crowds:

You can choose to travel in the slack season in winter. As the Terracotta Army is a sheltered attraction, weather will not affect your visit much. By the way, try to avoid visiting the Terracotta Army during public holidays, especially the National Day holiday of China from October 1 to 7 to stay far from throngs of tourists. Read more: Best Time to Visit Terracotta Warriors Museum

4. Travel to the Terracotta Army.

From downtown area, you can take metro line 1 to Fangzhicheng Station and transfer to metro line 9 to Huaqing Pool Station. Then take Lintong Bus 602 to your destination.  At Fangzhicheng Metro Station, you can also take the direct tourist bus 5 (306) to the Terracotta Army outside the nearby Fangzhicheng City Bus Stop. The bus is available between 07:00 and 19:00, costing about CNY 5. The whole journey takes about 1.5 hours. Read more: How to Get to Terracotta Warriors from Xi'an

Be careful to avoid traps:

1) When taking tourist 5 (306), make sure you are boarding on the right bus. There are often fake buses around the pick-up point, which claim to take you to the Terracotta Army. However, they may actually take you to the fake Terracotta Army, some rarely-known artificial attractions, or jade and souvenir shops to rip you off. The conductors on fake buses also wear uniforms, so it’s not easy to tell them from appearance. If a conductor keeps canvassing customers, it’s much likely to be a trap. 2) After you arrive at the parking lot outside the Terracotta Army, some local villagers may sell discounted entrance tickets and offer to lead you to the “real” Terracotta Army. Ignore them and follow the large group of tourists to walk about 500 meters (550 yards) to the entrance. 3) Near the entrance, there might be some vendors selling models of Terracotta Army. Do not buy them to avoid being overcharged. Read more: Avoiding Traps - Stay Away from Fake Terracotta Army

5. Tour in the Terracotta Warriors and Horses Museum.

After you get to the entrance, you need to walk about 15 minutes or take a battery car to the pits at the cost of CNY 5. In peak travel season, you need to queue up for the battery car, so it’s more advised to take a walk. Then your Terracotta Warriors tour formally starts. Recommended Route to Visit Terracotta Army: Pit 1 – Pit 3 – Pit 2 – Bronze Chariot Exhibition Hall Time Needed: 2- 4 hours

Tips: 1) Among all the sites, Pit 1 and Pit 2 are the highlights worth your attention. Pit 1 stands out for its large number of Terracotta Warriors and Horses and large scale. Pit 2 is important because it houses more types of Terracotta Warriors. 2) As there are few signs in English in the museum, hire a guide or rent an audio guide so that you will understand the exhibits better. Generally it costs CNY 150 or so to hire a guide and CNY 40 for renting an audio guide.

6. Attractions to Visit after Terracotta Army

1) Qin Shi Huang Mausoleum If you have enough time and interest, you can explore further in the nearby Qin Shi Huang Mausoleum and accessory pits, the entrance fee of which is covered by Terracotta Army ticket. Besides, there are free buses shuttling between the Terracotta Army and Qin Shi Huang Mausoleum. A tour there takes about two hours. 2) Huaqing Pool and Mount Li If you don't go to the Qin Shi Huang Mausoleum, your time will be enough for a visit to the nearby Huaqing Pool and Mount Li. You can conveniently take tourist bus 5 (306) or Lintong Bus 602 to the Huaqing Pool in about 40 minutes. Then you can appreciate various Tang Dynasty (618 - 907) style buildings inside the scenic area and have fun visiting the hot spring pools used by the Concubine Yang Yuhuan, one of the four most beautiful women in Chinese history. Mount Li is behind the Huaqing Pool Scenic Area, where you can have an easy climb to look over the structures below.

7. Have lunch.

Before setting out for other attractions after visiting Terracotta Army, it’s time for lunch. If you visit the Qin Shi Huang Mausoleum after, you’d better prepare some food in advance for there is no restaurants inside the scenic area. If you plan to visit the Huaqing Pool and Mount Li in the afternoon, you can have lunch near the Terracotta Army. There are quite a lot of restaurants surrounding the scenic area offering authentic Xi’an food, like Terracotta Army Friendship Restaurant, Old Xi’an Restaurant and small food stores selling Crumbled Flatbread in Mutton Stew , steamed cold noodles, and Chinese style hamburgers. There are also western fast food restaurants like McDonald’s, KFC and Starbuck for your choice. In addition, you can find local farmyards nearby selling home-cooked meals. The food is a little expensive compared with that in the downtown area and the taste may not be very satisfying.

8. Return to the downtown area.

1) From Terracotta Army and Qin Shi Huang Mausoleum: Outside the Terracotta Army Scenic Area, take Lintong Bus 602 to Huangqing Pool Metro Station. After getting off the bus, change to metro line 9 to Fangzhicheng Station, and then transfer to metro line 1 to the downtown area.  2) From Huaqing Pool Scenic Area and Mount Li: Outside the Huaqing Pool Scenic Area at the foot of Mount Li, take metro line 9 to Fangzhicheng Station. Upon arrival, take metro line 1 to the downtown area. If you are interested in the love story between Tang Emperor Xuanzong and his concubine Yang Yuhuan, it’s advisable to enjoy the Song of Everlasting Sorrow show in the Huaqing Pool Scenic Area. You will be fully immersed in the grand Tang Dynasty palace dance and touched by the love story of them. Show Timetable: Thursday to Saturday: 8:10 – 9:20 pm; 9:40 – 10:50 pm Sunday to Wednesday: 8:30 – 9:40 pm Note: As it is put on an outdoor stage, the show is only available from April to October.

Terracotta Army

Terracotta Warriors

About a one-hour drive outside the ancient capital of Xi'an lies one of China's most impressive claims to fame, the Terracotta Army, also known as the Terracotta Warriors and Horses. This underground, life-size terracotta army was constructed by China's first emperor, Qin Shi Huang, in the 3rd century BCE to serve as his guardians during the afterlife.

The buried army remained undisturbed underground until its accidental discovery in 1974 by a local farmer. Since then, it has become known as one of the most important archaeological finds of the 20th century and has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Terracotta Army, officially named Emperor Qin Shi Huang's Mausoleum Site Museum, is no doubt a must-see for all visitors to Xi'an.

Highlights and Travel Tips

The Qin Emperor's terracotta figures, remarkably well-preserved despite being over 2,000 years old, testify to the power of the man for whom they were molded to protect. This site is a stunning archaeological find of monumental scale, an amazing display that every visitor to China should see. Although the tomb complex itself where the emperor is believed to be interred is largely unexcavated, the thousands of surrounding warriors, horses, and chariots alone are a wonder to behold.

Terracotta Warriors

The Museum of Qin Terracotta Warriors and Horses consists of three main pits that are very close to each other. Pit 1 is the largest and composed of several corridors crowded with thousands of imposing, life-sized statues, each with their own individual faces, hairstyles, and uniforms. Northeast of Pit 1 lies Pit 2, which is smaller but contains a variety of figures, including infantry, crossbow team, cavalry, and chariots, that once guarded the emperor's tomb. Northwest of Pit 1 lies Pit 3, which contains the intricately designed statues of higher-ranking officers and a chariot led by four horses.

After passing through the main entrance (remember to keep your ticket, since you will be asked to show them when you entering the pits later), there is a 15-minute walk to the main pits. While there are golf carts to take you there for a small added cost, we suggest you walk since the path winds through a beautiful and shady green park and there are no stairs involved.

Once you arrive at the main pits, we suggest visitors follow this sequence of visiting: Pit 2 - Pit 3 - Pit 1, so that you can save the most massive pit for last. The Terracotta Army Museum is one of the most popular attractions in China, so be prepared for long lines and crowds when visiting, although the lines move quickly. We suggest you go early to avoid the crowds. (Read more tips for avoiding the crowds when traveling in China here .)

Excavation is still undergoing, so while you are visiting, you may see some half-restored figures and ruins with broken parts, as well as workers in the process of restoring statues. A zoom lens is a must if you want to take close-up photos of the warriors in the pits, since you will be kept at some distance from the pits.

All signs have English descriptions, providing some basic information about what you are seeing, but it is advisable to hire a professional guide since the place is large and full of history beyond the basic descriptions provided.

Terracotta Army - Chariot

After finishing you visit, there is no tram service back to the parking lot. You have to walk about a kilometer through a commercial area with many restaurants and souvenir shops and stalls. Be careful when buying expensive or valuable things, since some shops could be commission-based.

Accessibility Information

The path from the entrance to the main pits is flat with optional golf cart rides available. Ramps can be found at most places where there are steps. Restrooms are also accessible to wheelchair users. There might be some steps inside the museums but they are manageable with a little help.

Opening Hours and Ticket Prices

Opening hours: 8:30am - 5:00pm (March 16 to November 15) / 8:30am - 4:30pm (November 16 to March 15) Entrance fee: 120 CNY Average time for this activity: 2 hrs

How to Get There

The site of the Terracotta Army Museum is approximately 40 km from Xi'an city center but can easily be reached by bus or car. There is an affordable tourist bus that leaves from Xi'an Railway Station at regular times throughout the day; the bus costs 7 CNY and takes about an hour to reach the museum site. You can also take a taxi from Xi'an for about 150-200 CNY. If you have a tight schedule, then a private car or an organized tour is recommended.

How to Reserve a Ticket Online

The official ticket booking site for the Terracotta Army Museum is: http://order.bmy.com.cn:88/ticket/index.htm . Please note that the online booking system only accepts Chinese ID cards. Passport holders must buy tickets upon arrival at the site of the Terracotta Army Museum.

Explore Further

Around 1.5 km to the west of Terracotta Army Museum lies the Qin Shi Huang's Mausoleum Site Park (Lishan Garden) where the actual tomb of Qin Shi Huang is located. While most visitors skip this park, it is included in your Terracotta Army ticket and can be reached by the free shuttle bus from the Terracotta Army Museum.

This park consists of several smaller pits (filled with civil official figures, bronze birds, stone armor, acrobatic figures, etc.) and the Exhibition Hall of Historical Relics of Emperor Qin Shi Huang's Mausoleum, which showcases some relics excavated from the nearby pits. Be aware that some of the pits are not open to the public. These pits together with the exhibition hall normally take another two hours to visit.

Nearby the Terracotta Army Museum, there are some shops that make and sell replicas of the terracotta warriors as well as other souvenirs. Some shops allow people to mold their own idol-sized clay warriors, which can be an interesting activity for children.

Best Time to Visit Terracotta Warriors & How to Avoid Crowds

The Terracotta Warriors is an indoor attraction , making it accessible year-round without being affected by weather conditions. Choosing Right Season for Your Visit

Peak tourist season in  Xian typically falls during the national holidays, namely the Spring Festival (Chinese New Year), which usually occurs in late January or early February, Labor Day Holiday from May 1st to 3rd, and the National Day holiday in the first week of October. The summer vacation , from June to August, is another peak period.

The best time to visit the Terracotta Warriors tends to be during the shoulder seasons, which fall from March to May and from September to early November . During these periods, the weather in Xian  is comfortably mild, and the site is less crowded than in peak season. Visiting during the off-peak winter season can also be an excellent time for those who prefer a quieter experience.

Choosing Right Timing for Your Visit

The Terracotta Warriors site generally opens at 8:30 AM and closes at 5:00 PM . As most tour groups tend to arrive mid-morning, planning your visit for right when the site opens can help you beat the crowds. If you're not an early bird, another option is to visit around noon , when most tour groups left for a lunch break. Regardless of when you decide to visit, keep in mind, you'll need to manage your time well to ensure you can fully explore the site before closing time.

The T erracotta Warriors and Horses Museum , which houses the main pits containing the warriors, is divided into three sections: Pit 1, Pit 2, and Pit 3 .

Pit 1: The largest and most impressive of the three pits, Pit 1, houses the main army formation, with over 6,000 figures (2,000 are currently on display). The pit covers an area of approximately 14,260 square meters, equivalent to the size of an airplane hangar.

Pit 2: This pit is notable for its complex layout and variety of military figures, including standing and kneeling archers, cavalry, charioteers, and infantry. Despite being smaller than Pit 1, Pit 2 offers a richer diversity of the army, providing further insights into ancient military strategy and the mysteries of the army array.

Pit 3: Known as the command center, Pit 3 is the smallest but considered the most important pit due to its perceived role as the army's "headquarters."

Our Recommended Visiting Route: Pit 1 – Pit 3 – Pit 2 - Exhibition Hall

Begin with Pit 1 as it's the largest and most stunning, offering a grand first impression. Spend ample time here observing the soldiers' intricate details and formations. • T712CHsarahs 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Good dinner, mediocre show This was an add-on our tour guide, Tina, told us about earlier in the day. We went ahead and booked it with her, because it sounded interesting. The dumplings were amazing. Many varieties, all delicious. The show, however, was mediocre. It told some of the history of the Tang Dynasty, which was interesting, but the performances lacked pizzazz. We had good seats, but a tour group arrived late and was seated right in front of us. They were a continual distraction as they were served their dinner DURING the show because they had arrived so late. Overall, I'd opt for a dumpling dinner without the show if I had it to do over again. Read more Written December 11, 2019
  • jcouoh 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Interesting sight but terrible tour guide From start to finish this tour was rough. We booked through Viator which is a large company that sub contracts smaller tour companies. I am not sure what company we used but Jerry was our tour guide. We were out front of our hotel at 750 waiting for our tour guide. Apparently he came but and assumed another woman the was close by was us when she said she wasn't part of the tour. I tried calling the number on our paperwork and it just went to voicemail. Thank goodness I had we chat downloaded and the coordinator wrote and said he was waiting in the lobby. I went in and he was in the very back of the lobby on his phone sitting down hidden behind a fake tree. If I was looking for someone I would be out in the open and looking for new people in the lobby. His English was good but he had kind of an arrogant attitude. (Our opinion of course) the driver and drive was fine. When we got to the site he took us through a tour shop. I intentionally booked this tour because I did not want any shopping pressure. He proceeded to tell us that the guy who discovered the terracotta warriors is there in the morning in his store signing books and that it was a rare treat and good luck to meet him. Keep in mind this is before we have eve n seen the site. I asked if we would be exiting out this way and maybe on the way out we could stop if wasn't out of the way. He said it was along way from the exit so we dropped it and said we don't want anything. He was also eating breakfast at the store when we brought us there. I didn't appreciate the pressure and him saying it was bad luck and that we were missing out. I feel like i would have learned more from a tour book then we learned from him. The site itself is pretty profound and worth a visit. At the end we exited the site and we were hungry. We were going to buy an ice cream from one of the many vendors selling at the exit.and he told us not to buy from any of them and that he knew of a better place. After walking for 5mins we were back at the entrance and that same shop we already said we didn't want to go to. We paid probably triple price for the ice cream and felt severely dipped. Needless to say we didn't tip him and he made it apparent that he wasn't happy about it. I don't necessarily think this was a reflection on viator as a whole since we had 2 other great tours booked through them. Maybe don't use them for this specific tour or do it on your own for way cheaper and better. It is a long way from town though so you will need a ride. Read more Written August 12, 2018
  • 2011passer_by 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Day trip to Xi'an on your own I travelled solo and stayed in Xi’an from 25 to 27 November 2016, arrived by plane mid afternoon. Arrival was very fast, as I passed the immigration at international arrivals of transit airport, so the last flight counts as purely domestic. I travelled with China Southern airlines and found it a good value for money. The only downside, I could not check in online for international flight. As I had only one full day in Xi’an, I had to plan accordingly to see all the main attractions I could do in one day. If you plan to spend more time in the city, which will definitely worth it, you can see and do so much more than that! GET THERE Public transport system is good here. From the airport you can either take a public bus, or a shuttle bus (which is a minivan) to the city center. There is a couple of options depending on which part of the city you go to. As you leave the arrival area of the airport, simply find a huge info desk (you won’t miss it, it is right in front of the entrance and there is a crowd of people at it all the time) where you can see the buses and shuttles schedule and destinations. Get your tickets from there and wait to be called for boarding! These guys also offer you a city map, take it – very useful, especially if you have to go on foot to find your hotel when you get off the shuttle. STAY Plenty of options to suit any budget and expectation, starting with dormitories and ending with luxury hotels. I opted for Silk Road hostel right in the middle of the Muslim Quarter (maybe partially because I’m a foodie?), and I would say it was the best choice I could make in terms of location for the first time travel. The Muslim Quarter is easy to find once you get off the shuttle bus, and then just spot the right signage among all those food stalls! The hostel is nothing more than basic. Yet, the location made it all – as soon as you find the Muslim Quarter in Xi’an, you won’t get lost! Staff was very nice, guys actually speak English pretty well and are very helpful. A couple of big and starred hotels around the Bell tower square would make a better choice for those who seek more comfort – location is awesome really. EAT Muslim Quarter. Try everything! I mean it, it is the street food paradise. Meat skewers are a must, you’ll see lamb carcasses hanging on the trees. Soft shell crabs are so delicious. Spicy potato and tofu, and that place that does noodle soup... So I really hope you are going there for some amazing local flavours! If not, you’re really missing a lot. Starbucks is behind the corner. DO Explore the city sights. But that goes without saying! Stunning Bell and Drum towers look incredible day and night (open hours are only during the daytime though if you want to get inside). Stele Forest is a great museum, packed with stone statues and carvings, paintings that are available for sale. The street that leads to it from the South Gate of the city wall is packed with artists and handcrafts shops. I took a walk back to the Bell tower from the Stele Forest, and the night city center looks so lovely! Bicycle ride around the city wall. Single or double seater bikes, rent is for two hours plus refundable deposit. Even if you did not cycle for a while, you’ll get back in the habit quite quickly. You will pass all the gates and towers and enjoy the view of the old city as well. it is a great way to see the old town really. Terracotta Army. This is a must do when you go to Xian. In brief, take a bus, and no tour packages (could be just a waste of time, as you can really see everything in half a day at slow speed, on your own or with a guide if you need one). In more details now. Getting there is actually very easy and doesn’t have to cost you a fortune. Take a metro to Wulukou station, exit to Jiefang Road and head north, you will reach the bus terminal in some 5-7 minutes – it will be right ahead of you. You will pass a couple of big Chinese-styled hotels on both sides, that means you’re on the right way. When you reach the station, check the bus schedule on a big screen (no chance to miss it, it is outdoor). There is a couple of bus numbers, don’t be scared to take any of them – the public buses that go to terracotta army are all of bright colors, blue or green with route and major stops painted on the side. Get on one of those, pay (not more than 10 Yuan) and enjoy the ride. It will take about one hour. Once you arrive, follow the signs to the ticket office. There will be a lot of private guides offering you tours on the way, it is your choice whether you want to go for it or no, and if you do – make sure you let them know how much time you plan to spend there. I went without guides, and I explored all three pavilions in about 2 hours. That left me enough time to get back to Xi’an in the same way and the rest of the day for exploring the city. On your way back to the bus station grab a bite from one of the food stalls, you’ll see a lot on your way. I actually started the day with Terracotta Army, back to the city around one, then headed to the South Gate and went on the wall. I visited the Stele Forest after the wall and had right enough time for it, so I’d say it worked out really well for one day. OTHER TIPS Moving around the city is very easy, metro goes to all major spots you would want to visit. There is no need for taxi indeed. There is a bullet train station in the city (Xi’an North Railway, accessible by metro), which links it to other major cities and makes it very easy to get to other destinations in China. Have small bills for metro, machines do not accept bills above 20 Yuan. Carry cash, especially if you head to the food street. Not many people speak English, so a good shout is to have a translation application on mobile, many locals use it too. If you are going for basic accommodation, make sure to have a multi adapter with you, the only place where you can buy any country’s devises and stuff is Walmart. Bargain wherever you can, especially for souvenirs and especially in Terracotta Army museum. Read more Written February 13, 2017

The local people were very nice and taught me of their painting and Chinese paper cutting. My guide Sam Li did a great job of translation and introduction. Thank you for the excellent service. The Terracotta Army is part of the world's largest ancient imperial tomb complex, Qin Shi Huang's mausoleum. About 8,000 different life-size statues have been uncovered. It is the largest find of its kind .

The statues are 175–190 cm tall. Every one differs in gestures and facial expressions, some even with color showing. It reveals much about the Qin Empire's technology, military, arts, culture, and military.

2. It is described as "the Eighth Wonder of the World".

In September 1987, the Terracotta Army was praised as the Eighth Wonder of the World by the former French President Jacques Chirac.

He said: "There were Seven Wonders in the world, and the discovery of the Terracotta Army, we may say, is the eighth miracle of the world . The Terracotta Army was created by China's first emperor, Qin Shi Huang , who began the construction of the army in 246 BC after he (then aged 13) ascended the throne.

It was an afterlife army for Emperor Qin . It was believed that objects like statues can be animated in the afterlife.

Thousands of years later, the soldiers are still standing and showcase an extraordinary level of craftsmanship and artistry from 2,200 years ago.

4. Terracotta Army Museum mainly consists of three vaults.

Currently, the museum mainly consists of three pits and an exhibition hall : Vault One, Vault Two, Vault Three, and the Exhibition Hall of the Bronze Chariots.

  • Vault 1: It is the largest and most impressive (about 230 x 60 m) - the size of an airplane hangar. There are over 6,000 terracotta figures of soldiers and horses, but less than 2,000 are on display.
  • Vault 2: It is the highlight of the vaults (about 96 x 84 m) and uncovers the mystery of the ancient army array. It has the most army units with archers, chariots, mixed forces, and cavalry.
  • Vault 3: It is smallest, but very important (21 x 17 m). There are only 68 terracotta figures, and all of them are officials. It represents the command post.
  • The Exhibition Hall of the Bronze Chariots: It contains the world's largest and most intricate ancient bronze artifacts. Each carriage had about 3,400 parts and 1,234 kg. There were 1,720 pieces of golden and silver ornaments, weighting 7 kg, on each carriage.

Terracotta musicians, acrobats, and concubines have also been found in recent pits as well as some birds, such as waterfowl, cranes, and ducks. It is believed that Emperor Qin wanted exactly the same grand services and treatment for his afterlife.

6. Over 700,000 laborers took about 40 years to complete the statues.

Construction of the Terracotta Warriors began in 246 BC, when Qin Shi Huang assumed the Qin State throne, and ended in 206 BC, 4 years after Qin's death, when the Han Dynasty began.

Over 700,000 laborers worked around-the-clock for approximately 40 years to complete the terracotta army and tomb complex.

The Terracotta Army remained untouched underground for more than 2,200 years and was discovered by chance by local farmers while digging a well in 1974 in Xi'an.
