The 10 Best International Airlines

The best international airlines, according to Travel + Leisure readers, offer impeccable service — both on the ground and in-flight — and ultra-comfortable cabins.

global travel airline tickets

Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out  the 2023 list of our favorite international airlines .

As travelers returned to the skies in 2021, they relied on airlines to get them to their destinations not just safely, but in style. Whether you're flying halfway around the world or on a (relatively) short transatlantic hop, comfort, good food, and kind service are of the utmost importance. And that's exactly what Travel + Leisure readers considered when rating the best international airlines.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. In the airlines category, readers rated carriers on cabin comfort, in-flight service, food, customer service, and value.

Edging their way back on after being knocked out of the 2021 top 10 are No. 9 ANA and No. 10 Cathay Pacific Airways, two Asian heavyweights that were each praised for exceptional onboard service.

One of the newer airlines to make our readers' rankings is No. 6 La Compagnie, an all-business-class airline that launched in 2014 and currently connects New York with Paris, the Côte d'Azur, and Milan; it's been voted a World's Best International Airline since 2019.

The rest of the list is primarily filled by old reliables. No 2. Qatar Airways is, as always, celebrated for its business-class Qsuite, the first closed-door suite to enter service on any airline. "A 15-hour flight passes in what seems like moments," one voter said. Korean Air (No. 5) is also lauded for making time pass quickly and easily: "They made the longest flights I've ever taken comfortable and pleasant experiences," another said.

And, of course, the best international airline in the world — for more than a quarter-century — is none other than Singapore Airlines. Read on to find out why Singapore Airlines is so beloved by travelers and to discover the four other international airlines voted the World's Best by T+L readers.

1. Singapore Airlines

Singapore Airlines has been at the top of this list an incredible 27 times — every year of the awards' existence — and it scored even higher this year than last. Passengers are enthusiastic about every single aspect of the onboard experience: "Everything is as close to perfect as possible. Outstanding food, service, comfort," one voter said. And that's exactly what travelers want to hear before they board the longest flight in the world , a 19-hour haul from Singapore to New York. The luxury carrier had a big year, debuting six brand-new first-class suites on the A380s servicing the U.S. and unveiling new flagship lounges at Changi Airport following a $36 million renovation. It's perhaps unsurprising that another voter called Singapore Airlines "the standard against which all other airlines are measured."

Frequently asked questions

  • Wherever you’re traveling, flying can be a great experience if you’re well prepared. First, pack your passport (or a valid ID), travel documents and medications. Next, throw in a little extra in-flight entertainment to help make the time fly by. The latest bestseller and a tablet filled with the latest movies are good options. If you’re hoping to catch some z’s, a memory-foam neck pillow and earplugs are also worth bringing along.
  • There’s a lengthy list of items you should not pack in your carry-on bag too. Flammables, explosives and sharps are strictly prohibited in the cabin — they often include knives, razor blades, flares and aerosol cans. Some sporting equipment, like baseball bats and martial arts weapons, also generally can’t go in your hand luggage. Your airline’s website will have a full list of what you can and can’t take on board.
  • Opt for comfort rather than fashion when flying. Dress in layers and wear natural materials since they allow air and moisture to pass through and keep you cool. Cabin temperatures typically get cooler on long-haul flights, so pack a pullover and always wear sneakers or enclosed shoes.
  • Reduce your risk of developing deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clotting condition which can be caused by sitting for extended periods, by regularly walking around the cabin. You can also do some gentle lower limb exercises in your seat. If you’re at higher risk of developing DVT, consider wearing compression socks.

Global Entry is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) program that allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers upon arrival in the United States. Members enter the United States by accessing the Global Entry processing technology at selected airports .

At airports, program members proceed to the Global Entry lanes where processing technology will be used to expedite the members by capturing a photo to verify their membership. Once the photo has been captured, the member will receive on-screen instructions and proceed to a CBP officer who will confirm that you have successfully completed the process.

Travelers must be pre-approved for the Global Entry program. All applicants undergo a rigorous background check and in-person interview before enrollment. If a traveler was unable to schedule an interview at an Enrollment Center prior to their international travel, they have an option to complete their interview via Enrollment on Arrival upon their arrival to the United States.

Another upcoming processing technology option for travelers will be the Global Entry Mobile App. This app will enable members to validate their arrival to the U.S. on their iOS or Android device prior to entering the Federal Inspection Services area.

While Global Entry’s goal is to speed travelers through the process, members may still be selected for further examination when entering the United States. Any violation of the program’s terms and conditions will result in the appropriate enforcement action and termination of the traveler’s membership privileges.

United Airline's industry-leading global route network is set to expand even further with the launch of three exciting new international flight routes.

Later this year, the Chicago-based carrier will begin offering nonstop flights to Marrakesh, Morocco ; Cebu, Philippines ; and Medellín, Colombia . United will be the first airline to offer direct flights between the US and Marrakesh, and the only US carrier to fly to Cebu.

The three new routes bring United's nonstop service to 134 international destinations across 67 countries—reaching more destinations across the Atlantic and Pacific than all other US carriers combined. That includes flights to 9 destinations that no other carriers serve from the US mainland, such as Palma de Mallorca , Spain; Christchurch , New Zealand; and Dubrovnik , Croatia.

Providing service to exciting destinations like these is part of the airline's strategy “to curate the best experience for our passengers to earn or redeem miles and be able to take them places that no other US airline can go,” Patrick Quayle, United's SVP of global network planning and alliances, told Condé Nast Traveler.

Below, we break down each of United's new international routes launching in 2024 by start date, airport, and frequency—plus, where you should stay in each city.

Starting October 24, United will offer three direct flights per week between Newark Liberty International Airport and Marrakesh.

Newark Airport to Marrakesh, Morocco

Beginning October 24, 2024, United will become the first carrier to directly connect the US and Marrakesh, a vibrant Western Moroccan city that's winning over travelers with a new wave of charming hotels , chic design boutiques, and enticing restaurants. The flights will operate three times weekly on a Boeing 767-300ER aircraft, with 46 Polaris Business and 22 Premium Plus seats.

Meryanne Loum-Martin, whose boutique hotel, Jnane Tamsna , a preferred hideaway for artists and writers in the Palmeraie, suggests spending a day in Marrakesh by first having breakfast in the medina, shopping in Sidi Ghanem in the afternoon, and visiting the Dar El Bacha-Musée des Confluences museum before savoring local flavors at Dar Zellij for dinner. Stay at one of the new hotels in the medina, like Izza , Riad Alena , or Maison Brummell Majorelle .

Medellín is known as the “city of eternal spring” for its year-round warm weather.

Houston Airport to Medellín, Colombia

United will offer daily service from Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport to Medellín on Boeing 737 aircraft beginning October 27, 2024. Currently, most US flights to Medellín depart from Miami, where JetBlue, American, Spirit, and Delta partner LATAM currently offer direct service.

On top of year-round warm weather, the “city of eternal spring” is a laidback alternative to well-established Bogota. Once mired in instability , the city has reinvented itself with a burgeoning tech scene that attracts digital nomads from all over the world, as well as public infrastructure, education, and transportation advancements with a focus on sustainability . Art and culture connoisseurs and foodies alike will fall in love with the city's layered history and adventurous eats. Stay at The Charlee Lifestyle Hotel in Medellín’s buzzing Zona Rosa neighborhood.

Starting July 31, United will be the only US carrier with direct flights to Cebu.

Tokyo Narita Airport to Cebu, Philippines

The first of United's new international routes for 2024 will roll out on July 31, when the airline is scheduled to launch year-round, nonstop daily service from Tokyo to Cebu, Philippines. The new offering, operated on 737-800 aircraft, will make United the only US carrier to have a direct link with Cebu. While the flights do not depart from the US mainland, they will conveniently connect with United flights from San Francisco, Los Angeles, Denver, Newark, and Houston to Tokyo-Narita.

Cebu City is a cultural and religious center in the Philippines, home to the Santo Niño Basilica and Magellan's Cross. Just 30 minutes from the airport is nearby Mactan Island, known for world-class snorkeling, whale shark sightings, and more ocean splendor. Stay at the Shangri-La Mactan for the chance to swim with 160 species of aquatic life in the resort's Marine Sanctuary before sampling the property's all-encompassing seven restaurants.

MH370 Disappeared a Decade Ago. Here’s What We Know Today.

The disappearance of the Malaysia Airlines flight has remained one of the greatest aviation mysteries of all time. A new search may begin soon.

People lighting candles in the middle of a shopping mall.

By Derrick Bryson Taylor

On March 8, 2014, Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 was heading from Kuala Lumpur, the Malaysian capital, to Beijing, when it deviated from its scheduled path, turning west across the Malay Peninsula.

The plane, a Boeing 777 carrying 239 people from 15 countries, is believed to have veered off course and flown south for several hours after radar contact was lost. Some officials believe it may have crashed somewhere in the southern Indian Ocean after running out of fuel, but expansive search efforts over years have returned no answers, no victims, and no plane.

The reason the plane went off course and its exact location today remains one of the greatest aviation mysteries of all time. This week, officials suggested a renewed search operation might be undertaken.

Here’s a brief look at what we know about the plane’s disappearance 10 years later.

Investigators searched by air and sea.

The first phase of the search lasted 52 days and was conducted largely from the air, covering 1.7 million square miles and involving 334 search flights.

In January 2017, the governments of Australia, Malaysia and China officially called off the underwater search for the plane after combing more than 46,000 square miles of the Indian Ocean floor. That effort cost $150 million.

The following January, the Malaysian government began another search in partnership with Ocean Infinity after receiving pressure from families of the missing passengers and crew. After a few months, the search effort led by Ocean Infinity ended, having found no evidence of the plane’s whereabouts.

Was any debris ever found?

While a wrecked plane was never found, about 20 pieces of debris believed to be from the plane were located along the coasts of the African mainland and on the islands of Madagascar, Mauritius, Réunion and Rodrigues.

In summer 2015, investigators determined that a large object that washed up on the shore of Réunion , a French island in the Indian Ocean, was a flaperon that had come from a Boeing 777, making it likely that it was debris from Flight 370.

Another piece of debris, a triangular piece of fiberglass composite and aluminum with the words “No Step” written on its side, was found in February 2016 on an uninhabited sandbank along the coast of Mozambique.

Then, the Australian government confirmed in September 2016 that a wing flap that had washed onto a Tanzanian island was from Flight 370. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau matched its identifying numbers to those of the missing Boeing 777.

What are the theories around the plane’s disappearance?

There are a multitude of theories, ranging from the bizarre to the provocative, about what caused the plane to disappear. In fact, there are too many to name here. The lack of information about what happened to the flight led the public and investigators in several directions.

Some officials believe that the plane ran out of fuel , and one theory holds that the pilots tried to make an emergency landing at sea. Others suggest that one or both pilots lost control of the aircraft, that one was a rogue pilot, or that the plane was hijacked.

What did the official government report say?

After more than four years of searches and investigations, a 495-page report released in 2018 gave no conclusive answers as to the fate of the airliner. The lack of concrete answers devastated families of the victims, who had been hoping for some closure.

Kok Soo Chon, the head of the safety investigation team, said the available evidence — including the plane’s manual deviation from its flight course and the switching off of a transponder — “irresistibly point” to “unlawful interference,” which might suggest the plane was hijacked. But there was no evidence of who might have interfered, or why.

The report also closely examined all passengers and the pilot, Zaharie Ahmad Shah, and the first officer, Fariq Abdul Hamid. The report looked into the men’s financial statuses, health, tone of voice on radio communications and even their gait as they walked to work that day. No abnormalities were detected.

What happens next?

Now, a decade after the plane’s disappearance with no concrete answers or plane found, a new search could soon be underway.

Malaysian officials said in a statement this week that the government was ready to discuss a new search operation after being approached by Ocean Infinity.

Oliver Plunkett, the chief executive of Ocean Infinity, said in a statement that the company was now in a position to search again about six years after its previous effort returned no answers.

“This search is arguably the most challenging, and indeed pertinent one out there,” he said. “We’ve been working with many experts, some outside of Ocean Infinity, to continue analyzing the data in the hope of narrowing the search area down to one in which success becomes potentially achievable.”

American Airlines Goes All In on Its Loyalty Program and Small Cities

Meghna Maharishi , Skift

March 5th, 2024 at 1:49 PM EST

American unveiled an interesting strategy during its investor day Monday afternoon — bolster its loyalty program and presence in small U.S. cities.

Meghna Maharishi

American Airlines is rethinking its strategy.

Rather than emphasizing capacity across long-haul international routes – like Delta Air Lines and United Airlines do — American is looking to small U.S. cities and its loyalty program to boost its bottom line.

Since the pandemic, airline executives have mostly noted booming international travel . United announced orders for a slate of widebody jets in October as part of its ambitions to grow its extensive international network. It also added more routes to Asia . Delta ordered 40 Airbus A350s and expected another record summer for transatlantic travel.

But American is forging its own path.

Explosive Population Growth in the Sun Belt

American chief commercial officer Vasu Raja said the airline has been taking note of changing population trends in the U.S., particularly in the Sun Belt region.

While much of the U.S. travel market is concentrated among major coastal areas like New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Boston, the Sun Belt region has seen explosive population growth.

“Increasingly, the Sunbelt states are producing economic growth at a premium to the nation’s average, the other states are at a deficit and those four large coastal markets, even at a further deficit to that,” Raja said at American’s investor day on Monday.

For example, real estate investment firm Clarion Partner forecasted the region’s population to increase 55% by 2030. The region has also accounted for around 75% of U.S. population growth in the past decade, according to U.S. Census data .

The region, comprising the southeastern and southwestern U.S., contains many smaller — but fast-growing — cities like Charlotte, North Carolina and Jacksonville, Florida.

“Customers in those smaller cities pay materially more than what the system average is,” Raja said. “And that probably stands to reason because their demand is growing and there’s an inadequate level of supply for them.”

More New York to El Paso Flights?

Raja also pointed to fast-growing regions in places like Texas and Oklahoma.

“There is a large pool of high-growth, high-value customers because air travel needs are simply not being met,” Raja said. “And that’s where American Airlines comes in.”

In particular, Raja used the example of El Paso, Texas. While ultra-low-cost carriers like Frontier Airlines and Allegiant Airlines serve El Paso, Raja said a carrier like American would be more appealing due to its bigger schedule and operational reliability.

“What American Airlines uniquely does is we’re able to get customers from El Paso to Louisiana and El Paso to Montgomery, Alabama, El Paso to Mexico City and El Paso to Madrid, Spain,” he said.

The emphasis on smaller cities also falls in line with American’s latest blockbuster order , which included 90 Embraer E175s, regional jets that have fallen out of favor with the major airlines.

American isn’t abandoning international long-haul flights, though. Raja said the carrier seeks to build out its short-haul domestic network, and then link its international one.

“We say that our short-haul network is the foundation for how we go and create value for our customers, for our investors,” Raja said. “But very importantly, when that’s our foundation, that creates the opportunity for us to ladder a profitable international network off a bit.”

Big Ambitions for AAdvantage

The other aspect of American’s strategy is increasing membership in its frequent-flier program. In 2023, around 65% of American’s revenue was driven by members of its AAdvantage program.

Of that 65%, one-quarter was composed of AAdvantage members who don’t spend on premium products like first class, premium economy, or the airline’s co-branded credit card. Raja said American wants to tailor premium products to those travelers.

“They want to be rewarded for actually buying higher-value products and services,” he said.

The carrier expects revenues from premium products and AAdvantage to continue growing into the decade. Around 80% of American’s 2024 revenue is expected to come from the frequent-flier program and premium products.

Due to the growth seen from AAdvantage and premium products, American plans to add more premium seating to its fleet, which Raja forecasts will grow by 20% in the next few years. American is currently retrofitting some of its older Airbus planes to fit more first class seats.

And to increase frequent flier sign-ups, American made some minor changes to AAdvantage earlier in the year that included allowing members to purchase one-day passes to Admirals Club lounges or Flagship lounges, hold a flight for 24 hours without booking and fly domestic flights on standby without paying a fee.

“Our true north, as [CEO Robert Isom] referred to, is this: that life is better as an AAdvantage customer,” Raja said.

Is it safe to travel to Haiti right now? What travelers should know

global travel airline tickets

The State Department is urging Americans not to travel to Haiti amid fresh gang violence in the country, which declared a state of emergency last week.

While neither the warnings nor violence are entirely new – Haiti has been a Level 4: Do Not Travel destination in State Department travel advisories since even before the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse – a spate of recent high-profile attacks, including an attempt by armed gangs to seize control of the country’s main international airport, has sparked renewed urgency.

“The current security situation in Haiti is unpredictable and dangerous,” the U.S. Embassy in Haiti said in a security alert issued Sunday. “We are aware that there are few or no commercial options to depart Haiti safely at this time. As they become available, we urge U.S. citizens to take advantage of them. The U.S. Embassy’s ability to assist U.S. citizens is severely limited.”

The U.S. military stepped in to airlift American personnel “into and out of the Embassy” to augment security, U.S. Southern Command said Sunday in a statement to USA TODAY. Meanwhile, U.S. citizens in Haiti can fill out crisis intake forms and enroll in the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program program for updates.

Here’s what airlines and cruise lines are doing about trips to Haiti:

Are there direct flights to Haiti?

Three U.S. airlines typically operate direct flights to Haiti: American, JetBlue and Spirit. However, all three have temporarily suspended service and issued travel waivers for the Caribbean destination.

◾ American Airlines customers with flights scheduled to, through, or from Port-au-Prince (PAP) through March 15 may modify flights without paying change fees. Changes must be made by March 15 with the same origin and destination cities as the original booking.

◾ JetBlue Airways is waiving change and cancellation fees for travelers with flights scheduled to and from Port-au-Prince through March 22. Customers must rebook by March 27.

◾ Spirit Airlines is waiving change fees and fare differences on travel to, from, or through Cap Haitien (CAP) and Port-au-Prince through April 15. Travelers should rebook by April 30. After that, the airline said change fees would still be waived, but fare differences may apply.

Do cruise ships still go to Haiti?

Royal Caribbean and its sister line Celebrity Cruises stop in Labadee, Haiti , a private destination about six hours away from Port-au-Prince by car.

According to Celebrity’s website, it doesn’t look like the line has any sailings scheduled there until fall, but Royal Caribbean’s Adventure of the Seas, Explorer of the Seas, Independence of the Seas, Mariner of the Seas, Oasis of the Seas and Symphony of the Seas all have stops scheduled in Labadee over the next month. So far none have been canceled.

“The safety of our guests and crew is our top priority,” a Royal Caribbean spokesperson said in a statement to USA TODAY. “Our global security teams are closely monitoring the situation in the area, and at all times, we remind guests to remain aware of their surroundings while ashore. Should any changes be required, guests will be notified directly.”

The cruise line is aware of the travel advisory and has private security in the area. Only employees and guests are allowed on site. Guests are not allowed to leave the resort, partly for their safety.

Update 8:30 p.m.:  There were 830 canceled flights and 427 delayed flights at Denver International Airport as of late Thursday, according to the flight tracking website FlightAware.

All airport operations were normal, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Update 2:00 p.m.: Snow is finally falling at Denver International Airport, though operations remain normal and all runways are open, according to airport officials.

“What we’re seeing right now is there are bands of snow, but our crews are ready to plow the roads, de-ice the planes and clear the runways,” spokesperson Ashley Forest said.

Just over 1 inch of snow had fallen at the airport as of noon, according to the National Weather Service.

There were 814 flight cancellations and 190 delays reported as of 2 p.m., according to the flight tracking website FlightAware.

DIA could see 4 inches to 8 inches of snow accumulation through Friday morning, falling short of the 11 inches forecasters initially expected.

Current NWS forecasts show temperatures hovering near freezing through the day with wind gusts up to 28 mph and up to 3 inches of snow.

Temperatures could drop to 25 degrees overnight, with wind gusts up to 24 mph and up to 5 inches of snow, according to the agency.

Original reporting: As a major winter storm hit Colorado, more than 800 flights at Denver International Airport were canceled by 8:30 a.m. Thursday, according to airline tracking site FlightAware .

The storm, which forecasters at the National Weather Service in Boulder expected to last until Friday morning, could drop up to 18 inches in the Denver area. Snowfall rates will likely worsen throughout the day Thursday.

At DIA, 808 flights have been canceled, almost evenly spread between arrivals and departures. There are also 132 delayed flights.

Nearly all of these flights were canceled by the airlines preemptively Wednesday evening, said Stephanie Figueroa, an airport spokesperson.

The airport is in good shape Thursday, she said. All six runways are in operation, with flights still taking off and landing as normal.

“It’s really peaceful at the airport,” Figueroa said.

Some 40% of the cancelations (316) are through Southwest Airlines. That accounts for 51% of their Denver traffic.

Regional airline SkyWest has canceled 199 flights, or 75% of their Denver traffic.

Frontier Airlines has canceled 91% of their Denver flights with 124 cancellations. United Airlines has canceled 78 flights, accounting for 12% of their Denver traffic.

Other airlines with significant cancellations include CommuteAir and Mesa Airlines, with 30 and 29 canceled flights, and Volaris and AeroMéxico have canceled all of their Denver flights.

American Airlines, Air Canada, Lufthansa, Alaska Airlines and British Airways all have several canceled flights as well.

Southwest and United airlines issued travel warnings ahead of the storm and are allowing some customers to rebook their flights.

United customers who purchased their tickets on or before Sunday and are set to travel Wednesday, Thursday or Friday can reschedule their trip through March 19 with no fee or fare difference.

Southwest customers can rebook or travel standby within two weeks of their original travel date without additional charges, according to the alert.

By Jennifer McRae, Kasey Richardson

Denver International Airport says it's working nonstop to prepare for an incoming winter storm and advises travelers of delays and cancellations from Wednesday to Friday.

On Wednesday, operations at Denver International Airport were relatively normal in advance of a storm system that is projected to bring major snow to Colorado. Snow totals for the Mile High City could be as  high as 16 inches of snow and Foothills areas could see as much as 20 inches .

DIA told CBS News Colorado that snow teams are prepared and ready to clear runways and plow the roads surrounding the terminal. Three of the largest airline carriers in Colorado issued travel advisories in advance of a storm system that is projected to bring major snow to the Centennial State.

Delta, United and Southwest Airlines both posted information for fliers on Tuesday morning. That came as CBS News Colorado's forecasters in the First Alert Weather Center reported that atmospheric conditions are ripe for one of the biggest storms of the season.

Passengers are urged to check with their airline to confirm their flight status before leaving for DIA.

DIA also advises travelers to spend extra time getting to and from the airport, check flight statuses regularly and if able, consider using public transportation.

CBS News Colorado spoke to a traveler who was forced to change their plans due to the incoming storm.

"Friends that are going to the wedding asked me if I was going to make it and then I looked at the weather and saw the storm coming, and I had to change my plans," the traveler said.

At the end of Wednesday, there have been 788 cancellations and 15 delayed flights out of DIA.

Colorado Department of Transportation officials are urging people to stay home and stay off the roads during the storm.
