After an explosive and contentious Netflix special in 2021, Dave Chappelle is hitting the road again.

The veteran comedian has announced the dates for a fall stand-up comedy tour, titled “Dave Chappelle Live,” which will open with twin dates at New York City’s Madison Square Garden on Aug. 22-23 and conclude at Chicago’s United Center on Oct. 4.

Tickets to the tour, produced by Live Nation, will be available starting with local presales on Wednesday, July 26. The general onsale begins on Thursday, July 27, at 10 a.m. local time at Ticketmaster.com.

Chappelle has been a controversial figure following his 2021 Netflix special “The Closer,” in which he made jokes about transgender people, leading to  company walkouts  and protests last October. Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos originally defended Chappelle, saying in statement that the comedian is “one of the most popular stand-ups today” and “as with our other talent, we work hard to support their creative freedom — even though this means there will always be content on Netflix some people believe is harmful.” Sarandos ultimately said he “screwed up” in his reaction to the Chappelle backlash.

The comedian made headlines again in 2022 when he was attacked on stage  while performing a comedy set during the Netflix Is a Joke festival in Los Angeles.

Dave Chappelle's 'The Closer' controversy

Dave Chappelle came under fire in 2021 for his Netflix standup special "The Closer." The special provoked backlash due to his remarks about the LBGTQ+ community , in particular his focus on the transgender community.

In the special, Chappelle resurfaced a December 2019 controversy in which “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling drew backlash  after conflating sex with gender  and defending ideas suggesting that changing one's biological sex was a threat to her own gender identity.

Chappelle also attempted to paint a juxtaposition between the pace of civil rights gained by the LGBTQ community and those fought for by the Black community.

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos defended his decision to keep the special on the streaming service amid internal criticism from company employees.

Sarandos sent a staff memo at the time pledging Netflix's commitment to the special, citing Netflix's work in supporting their talent's creative freedom.

Sarandos' support of the special led to a walkout from a group of Netflix employees in 2021, a gesture that was amplified by emotional pleas from supporters of the walkout who rallied outside company headquarters.

The employees said company executives dismissed their concerns that Chappelle's comments in "The Closer" could lead to violence against the trans community.

At the time, two employees, one transgender and one non-binary, filed labor charges against the streaming giant alleging the company retaliated against them for speaking out aboutChappelle's special.

Hours before the walkout, Netflix shared a statement with USA TODAY: "We value our trans colleagues and allies, and understand the deep hurt that’s been caused. We respect the decision of any employee who chooses to walk out, and recognize we have much more work to do both within Netflix and in our content.”

"I want everyone in this audience to know that even though the media frames this that it's me versus that community, that is not what it is," Chappelle said in a 2021 Instagram clip. "Do not blame the LBGTQ (sic) community for any of this (expletive). This has nothing to do with them. It's about corporate interest, and what I can say, and what I cannot say."

"The Closer" received two Primetime Emmy nominations in 2022, including outstanding variety special (pre-recorded). Stan Lathan was also nominated for outstanding directing of a variety special for his work on "The Closer."

After the Emmy nominations were announced, people on social media voiced their frustration and criticized the decision to give further recognition to Chappelle's Netflix special.

Dave Chappelle attacked onstage

In May 2022, Chappelle was attacked onstage at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles during the Netflix Is A Joke festival.

An audience member stormed the stage asChappelle, 48, was exiting the stage after his performance, lunging at him and tackling him to the ground, according to a press release from the Los Angeles Police Department.

The man also pointed a replica handgun, which contained a knife blade, at Chappelle during the encounter, resulting in a charge for assault with a deadly weapon, according to police.

The man was identified as Isaiah Lee and in December 2022, he was sentenced to 270 days in county jail.

Dave Chappelle hosting 'Saturday Night Live'

In November 2022, Chappelle hosted "Saturday Night Live" for a third time, and the reception was not warm.

"SNL" writer Celeste Yim shared a seemingly pointed message after Chappelle was announced as host. "I'm trans and non-binary. I use they/them pronouns. Transphobia is murder and it should be condemned,"  they wrote on their Instagram Story  alongside a photo from work, captured by a Reddit screenshot.

The hosting gig also came on the heels of "SNL" having just recently hired its first nonbinary cast member, Molly Kearney, just months before.

Dave Chappelle walks onstage at New York City's Madison Square Garden.

Dave Chappelle topped himself.

After a star-studded first night at Madison Square Garden, the controversial comic brought in a number of huge comics and musical guests to his second show at MSG as part of his ‘It’s a Celebration B!%?#&$! Tour’ on Wednesday, Aug. 23.

Before the “Chappelle’s Show” star took the stage, Chris Rock, Jon Stewart , Jeff Ross , Luenell and Earthquake got the show rolling.

But that’s not all.

In addition to a headlining set from the self-proclaimed “GOAT,” The Roots , Nas , De La Soul and Ludacris all performed as well.

At midnight, Chappelle turned 50 and many of the artists listed above started a countdown to wish him a happy birthday.

Yet, there’s still more.

On Friday, Aug. 25 and Saturday, Aug. 26 , Chappelle will return to the Garden for two more shows before taking off on the rest of his nationwide tour.

Want to see him — and presumably a handful of jaw-dropping special guests — live?

We’ve got everything you need to know and more below.

After his MSG stay, the “Chappelle’s Show” icon will perform all over North America.

Here’s where he’s headed next:

Dave Chappelle controversy

Over the past few years, Chappelle made waves for his insensitive material about the transgender community in his Netflix specials “Sticks and Stones” and “The Closer.”

Rather than apologize for his remarks, he doubled down and defended his point of view.

Many big names have spoken out about his baseless attacks.

“Dave Chappelle making jokes about trans people directly leads to violence, whether it’s verbal or otherwise, against trans people,” said US soccer star Megan Rapinoe in an interview with  Time Magazine .

Fellow comic Wanda Sykes shared with  Variety  that Chappelle’s material was “so hurtful and damaging to the trans community.”

That didn’t stop Chappelle from going after other marginalized groups.

In November 2022, Chappelle was asked to host NBC’s “Saturday Night Live.” On the program, he made several anti-Semitic jokes in his 20-minute monologue.

At the time of publication, Chappelle has not issued a sincere apology to either community.

Comedian Dave Chappelle performs at Madison Square Garden during his...

Dave Chappelle, who turned 50 recently, climbed into a boxing ring of a center stage at the United Center on Wednesday. There were no ropes, no turnbuckles, no gloves. The Champ looked relaxed, cheerful, and wearing a loose sleeveless work shirt, strong. We know he’s the Champ — weight class: stand-up comedy, still performing — because he said so: He last toured with Chris Rock and Rock is the greatest, other than himself. He gets asked a lot about what he would have done if Will Smith tried to hit him , he said. He says he doesn’t know. But he has come to realize that he has been both men: He has been Will Smith, righteously, blindly vengeful, and he has been Chris Rock, knocked around.

He doesn’t say this to get a laugh.

Chappelle is more than two personas, and Wednesday’s sold-out United Center show found us facing yet another iteration of the comedian, and that’s bruised survivor.

Even if many of the blows were self-inflicted.

What made Chappelle so exciting on stage — and what made him so casually, thoughtfully, if not urgently, funny this time — was a lack of shtick. In the past he’s ended shows by having pancake dinners for audiences. He’s brought up Usher for impromptu concerts. He’s meandered, contradicted. His stories could be short, but more often were long and stripped of belly laughs. He told a fantastic one at the United Center about running into Lil Nas X and realizing this artist is living a very specific dream . It led to a story about a teacher asking students about their dream jobs someday. Fireman, one says (but, as Chappelle continues, this dream gets very dark). President of the United States, replies another (which Chappelle spins into a job at Walmart and early death).

Yet Lil Nas X — a Black LGBTQ rapper, country twinge — knew exactly what he would be, Chappelle said. The comedian said it with clear admiration and a hint of atonement.

Indeed, a couple of years ago, his Netflix concert film “The Closer” brought Chappelle as close to canceled as one can get and still, less than two years later, he sold out the United Center (and has two more mostly sold-out shows Friday and Saturday). He painted transgender people then with broad strokes and pandered with cheap shots — and rightfully caught hell. He ended the special by saying he was done with the subject, but in Chicago, he brought it up often — usually to say he was done discussing it, again.

This new arena tour feels designed to turn the page on the rank ugliness. It’s called “It’s a Celebration!” and there’s a DJ to hype up the audience with Whitney Houston and Bell Biv DeVoe. Everyone gets a free Chappelle tote bag at the door (random, but OK). And the first of the four opening standup comics is Flame Monroe, a brassy transgender comic who grew up in the Henry Horner Homes near the United Center and, in closing her set, notes that she stands with Chappelle. But Chappelle himself wants to reassure that he will still step over a line or two. He hasn’t been totally scared straight. At one point he even said he can still say anything he wants — as if, despite playing 23,000-seat arenas and making Netflix specials, you’re wondering. If he ended with a Sinatra-esque “My Way” of bombastic defiance, it wouldn’t have been out of place. The whole thing — particularly Chappelle’s drift toward self-aggrandizement — would come off hacky if Chappelle wasn’t also surprising. At his worse, he steps over a line, the audience gasps and the joke feels almost incidental to the shock. More often, he’s patient, personal and incisive.

But you have to wait. It’s whiplash, in other words, to have him open with intentionally offensive bits on the homeless and why he’s only picking on the disabled now, then score pandering points on reproductive rights, then veer into a smart, observant memory of running into retired boxer Floyd Mayweather because the former champion works the cash register at his strip club in Las Vegas and, incidentally, Chappelle likes to go to strip clubs alone, which his wife thinks is weird — “Do you think it’s weird?”

He leaned forward and asked someone, as if he sincerely wanted to know.

Remember, here is a guy who once rejected the audience itself, abandoned his hit comedy sketch show and wondered if his work was irresponsible. Few standups are so present , so plainly sensitive to how they’re being received. On stage, Chappelle smokes most of a pack. He says some stories are true (but doesn’t specify). He responds to shouting idiots. He muses on those who get “drunk off the feeling of being right,” but stops short of implicating himself. It’s hard to say when he is evading or digging in. The comedy of Dave Chappelle is live diary-making, full of blind spots, dumb thoughts and confusion. It’s hard to ask questions about what you don’t understand, and Chappelle, when he’s on, captures a tension between knowing better and not knowing enough. He may say he’s done talking about some subjects, but his brain is saying something else.

He's Back and Here to Stay!

After a seven-year break from the mic, Dave Chapelle made his long-awaited return to stand-up comedy in 2014, with fresh new material gathered during his absence. Chappelle hasn't slowed down since. Jerrod Carmicheal And Dave Chappelle Feud: What Happened And Why They Still Aren’t On The Same Page

The stand-up comedy world isn't all laughs.

Jerrod Carmichael in fur coat and no undershirt in Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show

Dave Chappelle has made a cottage industry for himself releasing sporadic Netflix stand-up comedy specials that will knowingly spark backlashes and debates — such was the case with his internet-dividing special The Dreamer that capped off 2023. Meanwhile, fellow comedian Jerrod Carmichael has largely aligned himself with HBO and Max, which released his emotional Emmy-winning set Rothaniel , and where he now hosts his unscripted effort Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show . And while the bad blood between them hasn’t made waves like other celebrity feuds, the LGBTQ+ comedian says Chappelle is apparently still feeling bitter about past comments, and Carmichael sounds sick of it all.

In a lengthy and candid interview with Esquire , Carmichael speaks to many of the rewards and challenges that come with living such a public life, and admits there’s still some difficulty in plainly stating that he’s gay. The Emmy winner famously came out during the aforementioned Rothaniel , and says a reactionary comment from Dave Chappelle at the time of its release remains a sticking point in his brain. And it’s the comment that more or less incited this somewhat low-key discord.

What Dave Chappelle Said About Jerrod Carmichael’s Rothaniel

Having previously revealed having relationships with both men and women in his docu-series Home Videos (available to stream with a Max subscription ), Carmichael went the full nine yards and addressed his gayness head-on for Rothaniel , a thread he continues to pull and shape in his most recent series. And for all the fanfare, critical acclaim and accolades he received, the special earned merely a backhanded compliment from Dave Chappelle.

Carmichael reflected on that comment to Esquire, saying:

He referred to it as the bravest special for 1996. And it’s like, that’s a funny enough line, whatever, but I wonder if he gets the irony that the fact that you are mocking it even then is why it was hard.

The Poor Things co-star prefaced those thoughts by pointing out how gay jokes with a negative bent still loom so large in the comedy community, to the point where part of him remains scared to be so open, with so many people still treating sexuality as a joke. In his mind, as long as “people continue to laugh at it and mock it,” the situation will remain a troublesome one for him and others.

How Jerrod Carmichael Reacted To Dave Chappelle’s Comment At The Time

In June 2022, two months after Rothaniel hit HBO, Jerrod Carmichael took part in a GQ profile in which he shared his take on comedians creating boogeymen to sell tickets in a world where cancel culture thrives. In it, he called out Dave Chappelle for seemingly having no issue with his comedy legacy being so intertwined with controversial opinions on the trans community in particular. In his words:

Chappelle, do you know what comes up when you Google your name, bro? That’s the legacy? Your legacy is a bunch of opinions on trans shit? It’s an odd hill to die on. And it’s like, hey, bro. Who the fuck are you? Who do you fuck? What do you like to do? Childish jokes aside, who the fuck are you? It’s just kind of played. But he’s choosing to die on the hill. So, alright, let him.

While Dave Chappelle isn’t necessarily one to take tons of interviews where he calls out other celebrities who have done him perceived wrongs, he apparently didn’t take too kindly to Carmichael’s comments. And not exactly in a self-reflective way, as the 36-year-old comic went on to explain.

Jerrod Carmichael Clarified His Previous Chappelle Comments

Nearly two years after that GQ profile, Jerrod Carmichael is hopefully in a better place where such thoughts are concerned, and in looking back at his past comments, he offered up a more thoughtful paraphrasing about why he’s disappointed in Chappelle’s current career cycle, before revealing that the Half Baked vet is allegedly looking for Carmichael to make amends. In his words:

I said he’s not revealing anything personal about himself and he’s removed from what he’s talking about, and I think he’s smarter than that and deeper than that and has more interesting thoughts. But he took it as ‘fuck Dave Chappelle,’ because he’s an egomaniac. He wanted me to apologize to him publicly or some shit.

Just in case anyone may have expected Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show to feature a segment where the titular star sets up a soapbox in Times Square and hollers out apologies to Dave Chappelle, maybe go ahead and put those expectations away. It remains to be seen if Chappelle will have any thoughts to share about these latest comments, but he’s rarely been one to hold back on anything.

Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show airs new episodes on HBO on Friday nights at 11:00 p.m. ET. Head to our 2024 TV premiere schedule to see what else is on the way.
