Whether or not the American Airlines AirPass is worth it depends. If you’re always on the hunt for the cheapest fare, then most likely no. However, if you’re a high-flying, frequent American Airlines customer, the AirPass program may be worth considering. Joining requires significant cash outlay, but this upfront payment then acts as a credit balance for travelers to draw from when purchasing future travel.

The AirPass also includes many elite status perks and guaranteed pricing, but is it worth it? Or are you better off simply spending as you go when buying American Airlines flights?

Here’s a rundown of the American Airlines AirPass program, plus who can get the most value from the upfront investment.

What is AirPass?

The American Airlines AirPass program is nothing new; American has offered iterations of the program for years. In short, the program allows members to purchase unrestricted tickets at a discount by putting down a large deposit up front. Ticket purchases are later deducted from the balance like a debit system.

This has been a useful tool for the airline to get upfront payment for future travel while providing perks and protection against last-minute fare hikes in exchange. The program is especially attractive to some corporate and business travel customers that buy expensive last-minute tickets and are prone to making frequent changes to them (often at great expense).

However, due to cheaper airfare and recently loosened ticketing rules that allow free changes on both domestic and international tickets, buying unrestricted tickets makes less sense these days than before. Still, since many corporate customers prefer maximum flexibility on their tickets, including generous routing rules and less travel restrictions, AirPass targets the last-minute business traveler.

Lifetime AirPass

In the 1980s, while the airline was struggling financially, the airline offered a lifetime AirPass (formerly known as AAirpass) for $250,000. The cost of the pass increased over time and was discontinued in the 1990s.

AirPass benefits

Fixed-price fares with companion privileges.

Membership is primarily built around the opportunity to purchase fixed-price fares, which eliminates concern over price fluctuation on American and several partner airlines , including Finnair, Iberia and Japan Airlines (when these flights are ticketed through American).

Even though ticket changes are allowed for most travelers these days, most changes are still subject to a difference in fare. This sometimes means a substantial price hike — especially for last-minute changes — and flyers are on the hook to make up the cost difference. With AirPass, travelers are protected against that with guaranteed pricing. Members can book the last seat on a given flight and be assured that it will still cost them the original fixed price.

AirPass members can also bring along a companion. Their tickets are priced according to the member’s rates and flexibility policies.

Instant elite status

Depending on the level of investment in the program, AirPass members are granted instant elite status.

Priority services

From check-in to boarding, AirPass members can use Priority Access lanes to avoid longer lines. There is no charge to check a bag either.

Lounge access

A membership to Admirals Club lounges is part of AirPass membership, and this includes the standard guest privileges that come with being a member. Of course, if this is the most important reason you're considering AirPass, a credit card that comes with Admirals Club access like the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® would make more sense.

In-flight amenities

Instant upgrades to better seats, including Main Cabin Extra or Preferred seating, are part of the program, regardless of the member’s AAdvantage status. Depending on the elite status earned, AirPass members are also eligible for complimentary premium cabin upgrades on many flights and free in-flight Wi-Fi. If seated in the main cabin, AirPass members are also treated to a free snack or meal, plus two alcoholic drinks.

Waived same-day change fees

There is no fee to make a same-day flight change, and the ability to change flights both before and on the day of travel without any fees or difference in fare (if routing remains the same, since AirPass uses flat pricing) is one of the primary benefits.

Mileage earning

Another AirPass perk is the substantial Elite Qualifying Miles bonuses travelers will earn with AAdvantage: All purchased AirPass tickets are eligible for mileage earning, and those tickets booked within seven days of departure book into the first (F), business (J), premium economy (W) and main cabin (Y) fare buckets.

If you have elite status, your mileage earnings will be even higher.

AirPass customer service

In addition to signing up online, American Airlines offers a customer service phone number to help travelers register for an account. The number is 800-433-6355.

What does AirPass cost?

Depending on the level of membership, AirPass costs between $10,000 and $30,000. There are personal and shared memberships available, with the latter allowing the initial prepayment (charged per member) to be used across multiple travelers.

Shared membership comes with an allocation of elite status for each member, but the status level varies based on the investment amount between the primary member and those with whom the AirPass is being shared.

How much do individual flights cost?

To determine the cost of your most frequent routes, there’s an online calculator that gives you the standard AirPass fares for any route you search. Flights are calculated on a one-way, cost-per-mile basis using a flat 40-cents-per-mile base times a cabin multiplier.

For example, a main cabin flight between Dallas-Fort Worth and Chicago-O'Hare comes out to just under $400 based on the distance, cost per mile and cabin multiplier.

AirPass fares offer flat pricing and the ability to change your ticket whenever you need to. Even though they won’t be the cheapest tickets, for many types of travelers, that flexibility is paramount and what makes AirPass so valuable.

Is AirPass worth it?

Let’s face it: AirPass is not for travelers who buy basic economy or the cheapest tickets. It is designed for frequent flyers who want flexibility in their travel and are willing to pay for it. Don’t consider this an option if you typically buy only the most affordable flights; AirPass won’t save you money.

AirPass fares are often priced substantially higher than most other tickets, but protect members from even higher last-minute fares if they need to change a ticket.

AirPass doesn't charge change or cancellation fees for tickets, but airlines are generally waiving those restrictions for current travel. This means one of the primary benefits of AirPass is now available to everyone, making it less advantageous.

While flight changes may be free, the difference in fare always applies. With AirPass, fixed-price ticketing makes large swings in price less of an issue.

One caveat: AirPass members who buy the cheapest “PlanAhead” fares and make a change within seven days of departure lose the ability to keep the discounts associated with this ticket type. Instead, these travelers must pay the flat AirPass main cabin fare. Still, the difference in fare is a preset price, so the predictability of what you will pay remains the same.

The bottom line

If you make lots of changes to travel plans, especially at the last minute, and need to have maximum flexibility with ticketing rules, AirPass provides value. In addition, it adds Admirals Club membership, elite status and other in-flight benefits. For corporations that don’t already have a ticketing contract with airlines for special fares, it can make a lot of sense.

AirPass is not for everyone, but for a select few who do the cost-benefit analysis, it might be worth trying for the price predictability and flexibility of its fares. For the vast majority of value-conscious road warriors among us, however, AirPass is not the best fit.

If you’ve dreamed of backpacking around South America, exploring multiple countries in Asia or island-hopping in the South Pacific, you may be a good candidate for an air pass. Primarily offered by national airlines and international airline alliances, air passes are special fare programs that allow you to fly to multiple cities in a designated region at discounted rates, creating your own personalized itinerary. If you’re planning extensive travel within a large country like Australia or a region like Europe, an air pass could save you money over buying point-to-point tickets.

Is an air pass right for you? Read on for some basic facts about air passes and a summary of regional passes around the globe.

How do air passes work?

The price of your pass is generally determined by the number of flight segments on your itinerary, the distance you’re flying and how long you plan to travel. A few air pass programs also include the price of your international airfare to the region. (For passes that require you to pay for coupons or segments, read the terms carefully; connecting flights may require multiple coupons.)

Some air passes are more flexible than others. Certain providers require you to purchase and reserve every leg of your trip before you leave home, while others let you change your flight dates or add segments while you’re on the road. Be sure to check what rules apply to your air pass before purchasing.

Who offers air passes?

Air passes are offered by the three major airline alliances (Star Alliance, Oneworld and SkyTeam), by individual airlines and occasionally by third-party agencies. The alliances may be your best bet if you’re interested in doing extensive travel over a large region such as Africa or Asia; if you’re looking to focus on only one country or a smaller region (such as Australia or Southeast Asia), you may do better to purchase a pass from an individual airline serving that area.

When choosing your air pass, keep in mind any frequent flier programs that you may already belong to. If you you’re a member of a loyalty program for another airline within the same alliance as the provider of your air pass, you may be able to apply the miles accrued on your air pass toward that program. Be sure to ask what restrictions may apply.

Who can purchase an air pass?

Air passes are generally available only to travelers who live outside the region in question — so while North America air passes do exist, most of them cannot be purchased by U.S. or Canadian citizens.

What other restrictions apply?

Many air passes must be purchased in conjunction with an international flight to the region on the same airline (or a codeshare partner) as the airline providing the pass. To prevent hassles, either purchase your international ticket and your air pass at the same time or, if purchasing separately, make sure to have the confirmation code for your international ticket handy when you’re booking your air pass — that way the agent can easily look up your existing reservation.

How do I book my air pass?

Due to the complicated nature of ticketing and routing, most air passes can’t be booked online. You’ll either have to call the provider directly or work with a travel agent.

Will an air pass always save me money?

Don’t assume that an air pass is your most affordable option. Before you book, check out alternatives such as regular point-to-point tickets, airfares on discount airlines in the region, and even local train or bus services.

Where appropriate, we have given links to websites where you can find more information about those. It may also be worth calling any airlines based in the country where you’re headed to see whether they offer air passes, as these programs are not always easily accessible on airline websites.

Africa and Middle East Air Passes

Star Alliance Africa Airpass

The Star Alliance Africa Airpass serves more than 55 cities in 23 African countries, including Ghana, Kenya and South Africa. You must purchase at least three but no more than 10 flight coupons. Travel is good in economy class on South African Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, EGYPTAIR and Brussels Airlines, and the pass must be booked in conjunction with an intercontinental ticket to/from Africa on a Star Alliance member airline. The pass is good for a minimum of three days and a maximum of three months, and may be booked through a travel agent or any Star Alliance member airline.

Visit Africa

Oneworld’s Visit Africa pass is best for travelers looking to concentrate on southern Africa, with its focus on destinations like Johannesburg, Cape Town and Victoria Falls. You must book a minimum of two sectors, but you need only confirm the first sector at the time of booking, giving you flexibility with the rest of your trip as long as you ask for your flights to be “open dated.” The Visit Africa pass flies with British Airways and its affiliate Comair, and can be booked through a travel agent or by calling any airline in the Oneworld alliance.

Asia Air Passes

Star Alliance Asia Airpass

You may travel throughout Asia for up to three months with the Asia Airpass from Star Alliance. Coupon prices vary by length of segment; you must purchase at least three and no more than 10. All segments must be planned in advance. The pass must be purchased in conjunction with a flight to Asia from outside the region on a Star Alliance carrier. Book the pass through a travel agent or any Star Alliance member airline.

Go Round Asia and South West Pacific

SkyTeam’s offering is good in 26 countries for up to 12 months, for a range of 3 to 10 stops. The pass includes various Asian countries as well as Australia and New Zealand. The pass may be purchased through a travel agent or by calling any SkyTeam member airline.

Oneworld’s Visit Asia pass covers 50 different cities in 18 countries, including Delhi, Seoul, Bangkok and Tokyo. As long as you book a minimum of two flights, you can travel as long as you like within the validity of your qualifying international ticket on Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines or their affiliates. Flights between each city pairing are priced at flat rates based on geographic zones. You must make confirmed reservations for your first flight, but other flights may be booked later as long as you ask for these segments to be “open dated.” You may purchase the pass through a travel agent or a Oneworld member airline.

Australia/Pacific Air Passes

Qantas Explorer

The Qantas Explorer is a multi-city flight option that must be purchased in conjunction with a trans-Pacific flight between the U.S. and Australia on Qantas or American Airlines. Fares on Australia domestic flights are based on the distance you travel. There is no minimum stay, but a maximum stay of 330 to 350 days from the date of reservation applies. This is one of the few air passes that can be booked online; alternatively, you may call Qantas directly to make your reservation, but it’s an additional $30.

Air New Zealand Explorer Pass

Air New Zealand’s Explorer Pass is a flexible fare option that’s ideal for travelers looking to explore New Zealand, travel the Australian coast, or hop-skip around South Pacific islands such as Tahiti, Fiji and Western Samoa. You may purchase up to 10 flight coupons, with fares varying by geographical zone. The pass must be purchased in conjunction with an Air New Zealand trans-Pacific flight to one of the destinations covered by the pass. Valid on Air New Zealand operated aircraft only. To purchase, call your travel agent or Air New Zealand.

Visit Australia and New Zealand

Oneworld’s Visit Australia and New Zealand pass covers more than 60 destinations, and is a particularly good choice if you want to concentrate your travels in Australia; thanks to Qantas, a Oneworld member airline, this pass serves more Australian cities than the competing pass from Star Alliance. However, this pass does not include South Pacific island destinations. Segment prices are based on geographic zone, and you must purchase a minimum of two. There is no maximum stay beyond the validity of your international ticket (which must be booked on a Oneworld carrier). To purchase, contact a travel agent or a Oneworld alliance member.

Europe Air Passes

Star Alliance Europe Airpass

The Europe Airpass from the Star Alliance covers 40 countries and offers three to 10 coupons for travel within Europe and North Africa. Your first flight segment must be confirmed ahead of time, but later segments can be confirmed after your trip begins. Travel is good for up to three months, and the pass must be purchased in conjunction with an intercontinental ticket to Europe on a Star Alliance airline or a Star Alliance Round the World Fare. To book, contact a travel agent or a Star Alliance member airline.

Serving 44 countries, the SkyTeam alliance offers a Go Europe Pass with no minimum or maximum stay. You do not have to reserve any flight segments ahead of time except for your first one, which allows you a great deal of freedom as you travel. You must purchase at least three coupons, which are priced based on geographical zone, up to a maximum of 16. The pass must be used in conjunction with a roundtrip intercontinental flight on any of the SkyTeam airlines or with a SkyTeam Round the World ticket. Flights are operated by Aeroflot, Air Europa, Air France, Alitalia, Czech Airlines, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and TAROM in 44 countries. To purchase, contact your travel agent or call a SkyTeam member airline.

Visit Europe

Oneworld’s Visit Europe air pass offers flights to 220 cities in more than 50 countries across Europe and North Africa. You must purchase a minimum of two flight coupons, but there’s no maximum for the number of flights you can take — and the pass is good for as long as your international ticket is valid. You must confirm the first sector of your trip in advance. The pass is available in conjunction with an international flight to Europe on a Oneworld member airline or affiliate. To book, call your travel agent or a Oneworld member airline.

North America Air Passes

Go USA and Canada

As its name suggests, this SkyTeam pass is good for travel within the U.S. and Canada. (Unlike the two passes below, it does not include Mexican or Caribbean destinations.) You may purchase three to 16 coupons; prices vary based on your country of origin, the number of coupons you purchase and the time of year you travel. The maximum stay is subject to the flight date of your intercontinental ticket. Simply book a seat on a Delta Air Lines flight at least 14 days before your transatlantic, transpacific or intercontinental departure; book remaining flights at your discretion. The pass is available in conjunction with a SkyTeam Round the World Pass or an international flight to North America on a SkyTeam member airline (or associate airline). To purchase, contact any SkyTeam airline or your travel agent.

Star Alliance North America Airpass

The Star Alliance North America Airpass covers more than 300 destinations in 18 countries, including the U.S., Canada, Mexico and a number of Caribbean islands. With a few exceptions, it is not available to residents of any country covered by the pass. You may purchase three to 10 flight coupons and travel for up to three months. The pass is available in conjunction with a Star Alliance Round the World Fare, Circle Fare or intercontinental ticket to the U.S., Canada or Mexico on a Star Alliance member airline. Your first flight must be reserved in advance; for later flights, you may change your reservations up to two hours before departure. To purchase, contact any Star Alliance member airline or your travel agent.

Visit North America

Oneworld’s Visit North America pass covers more than 250 destinations in countries across North America, including the Caribbean and Central America. There is no minimum stay, though you must book at least two flights; you may take up to 10 flights over a maximum period of 60 days. Pricing is based on geographical zone. All sectors of your itinerary must be confirmed at the time of booking, though changes may be made later for an additional fee. The pass is available in conjunction with a roundtrip international ticket to North America on a Oneworld member airline. To purchase, contact any Oneworld airline or your travel agent.

South America Air Passes

Visit South America

Oneworld’s Visit South America pass serves 65 cities in 10 countries, including Argentina, Brazil and Peru. You must book at least three flights, and travel is valid up to 12 months. You must specify which destinations you plan to visit at time of purchase, but you do not need to reserve your flights (except the first one) until the day before you wish to fly. A great pass to visit Easter Island, the Galapagos or the Amazon. To book, contact a travel agent or a Oneworld member airline.

A Guide to Airline Flight Passes Around the World

Following on from my post on airline stopover programs, I wanted to continue to explore more of the unique ways that airlines around the world strive to offer value for customers.

Flight passes are bundles of prepaid flights that are valid within a specific region and for a limited amount of time. Put differently, flight passes are akin to buying flights in bulk. Many airlines around the world offer passes in various forms, each with its own unique benefits and drawbacks.

Whether or not you can benefit from a flight pass depends on how often you travel and the places you travel to. If you are a budget-conscious traveller, the idea of forking out thousands of dollars for speculative travel may be terrifying, as you can often get better deals by watching out for flight sales throughout the year. 

On the other hand, if you travel during peak travel periods or often make last-minute bookings, it could be very worthwhile to look into buying a number of flight credits in advance. Similarly, if you plan to do a lot of travel in a short period of time, you may benefit from buying an unlimited flight pass.

Different types of flight passes, unlimited flight passes, flight credit passes.

Flight passes generally come in two different varieties. Some flight passes offer unlimited travel within a restricted time frame. If you plan on doing a lot of travel within the permitted time frame, these unlimited passes can offer substantial value over buying one-way or multi-city flights.

Unlimited flight passes are best used by maximizing your travel over a short amount of time. If you’re the type of traveler who likes to see as many places as possible when you visit a new country, or if you need to cover a lot of ground in a short amount of time for work or play, these passes could be worth looking into. 

A more common type of flight pass is purchasing a number of flight credits that are redeemed for travel between specified zones within a specific time frame. Each time you go to book a flight, you use a credit instead of being subject to the currently available fares. 

This type of flight pass is typically purchased by someone who often travels back and forth between two areas. Perhaps you’re a snowbird who travels between Toronto and Arizona a handful of times between fall and spring. Maybe your vocation requires you to travel between Vancouver and Toronto to meet clients in person. Or, you might be a student studying in Montreal but based out of Edmonton, and your parents are generous enough to fly you back for holidays and breaks.

We’ll first look at the most notable unlimited flight passes offered around the world, followed by the flight pass programs that operate on a per-credit basis.

Flair Airlines

Earlier this year, Flair Airlines sold the Go Travel Pass , which offered unlimited travel within its Canadian network between February 13 and May 13, 2020. For $499, passengers could book flights on any day of the week except for Fridays and Sundays and during blackout periods (long weekends and Spring Break). For $699, passengers could travel on any day of the week and had one checked bag per flight.

The pass covered the base fare only, so passengers were still on the hook for the taxes and fees for each flight they booked. For example, a flight between Halifax and Toronto has a base fare of $42.27 and taxes and fees of $46.73. So, a pass-holder would be on the hook for $46.73, which is a very reasonable amount to pay (but adds up with each flight you take).

While I can’t say that I have a particular desire to fly with Flair on a regular basis, I can see this pass offering substantial value to anyone wanting to visit as many places in Canada as possible on their holidays. The pass would definitely help you stretch your travel budget so you could make up for the in-flight experience with a variety of on-the-ground experiences.

Air Canada also offers unlimited flight passes for use in a variety of zones in their domestic and transborder networks. In comparison to Flair’s Go Travel Pass, a similar unlimited pass with Air Canada is many orders of magnitude more expensive, coming in at a whopping $5,028 per month!

(In addition, Air Canada also sells flight passes in the form of credits, which will be covered below.)

Azul Airlines

If you’re planning a visit to Brazil, Azul Airlines’s Azul Airpass gives you unlimited flights within their domestic network for 10 or 21 days. If you have an international paid ticket on United, TAP, or Azul Airlines to Brazil, you can buy a 10-day Airpass for US$399 (plus booking fees) or a 21-day Airpass for US$499 (plus booking fees). If you fly to Brazil with any other carrier, you can buy an Airpass valid for four flights within a 21-day period for US$499 (plus booking fees).

A quick search for flights within Brazil shows that you can get flights between Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo for $20, so if you only plan on visiting Brazil’s major tourist hotspots, then this may not be the best choice for you. Over the course of three weeks, though, you could definitely get your money’s worth by hopping around the surprisingly large country. 

Bamboo Airways

Bamboo Aiways, based in Hanoi, Vietnam, is currently offering Bamboo Passes valid in their domestic and international networks. The Bamboo Pass Unlimited gives cardholders unlimited travel for one-, three-, six-, and twelve-month durations for $3,000, $9,000, $14,400, and $25,200 respectively. 

Bamboo Airways flies to the Czech Republic, Australia, Indonesia, Los Angeles and San Francisco in the US, most countries in East and Southeast Asia, and extensively within Vietnam. Over the course of a month, I imagine you could squeeze value out of the pass by jet-setting around Vietnam and the world, if it was safe to travel.

VietJet Air

VietJet is another discount Vietnamese airline with hubs in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Currently, they are offering two unlimited passes for flights to 45 destinations within Vietnam. 

For $536, the Power Pass Sky6 pass gives you unlimited travel within Vietnam until the end of September. Similarly, for $1,012, the Power Pass Sky12 pass extends the period until March 31, 2021. This includes a 15kg checked bag and a 7kg carry-on bag, but you are still on the hook for taxes and fees. 

A quick search for flights between Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi shows a total round-trip cost of $64 on their lowest fare. Of this, $52 was taxes and fees, so I’m not sure if this particular product is a sensational value (even with the included baggage). I think the value here would come in last-minute bookings or bookings during peak travel periods, which seems to be a common theme with flight passes.

The more common alternative to paying for “unlimited” travel is to buy flight pass credits. These credits are akin to buying a 10-pack of one-way public transit tickets – you pay for a number of trips in advance, and you usually pay a bit less than what you would have paid if you bought 10 separate one-way journeys. 

Flight passes aren’t really of use to the occasional traveller because of their high upfront cost; instead, they are best used for flexibility in last-minute bookings or cancellations, booking during peak-season travel, or travelling back and forth between two regions on a frequent basis.

Air Canada offers a variety of flight passes for travel across Canada, between Canada and the United States, and to many of its international destinations. The price is inclusive of all taxes, fees, and surcharges, so once you’ve purchased a pass, you need not spend a penny more.

The type of flight pass you need depends on where you need to fly and the type of fare from which you’d benefit most. In total, there are 44 different flight passes available, with options in a mid-range economy fare (Flex), a full-fare economy fare (Latitude), or a business class fare. Less expensive fares will be less flexible, may incur fees for changes and cancellations, and are subject to the availability of “M” Flex fares.

For individuals, most passes are sold in packages of 6 or 10 credits. There are also options for businesses ranging from 30 to 200 flight credits. Each one-way flight journey costs 1 credit (even if it consists of multiple flight segments), and booking is done through Air Canada’s dedicated flight pass portal.

Suppose you’re a teacher working in Toronto but whose family lives in Vancouver. You tend to travel in peak periods when you have time away from work over the December holidays, Spring Break in March, long weekends, and during the summer break.

You stumble upon the East West Connector Pass, and you’re weighing out the benefits of purchasing one.

The average price per flight is $577.10 one-way (or $1,154.20 round-trip), and since it’s a Flex ticket, you also earn 2,085 Aeroplan miles per direction and have one free checked bag. Over the December holidays, the current price for a Standard fare ticket is $1,137.32 excluding a checked-bag and earning only 521 Aeroplan miles. 

While the difference in price isn’t substantial, you’ll save some money on bags and earn more Aeroplan miles for your trip. If you have eUpgrade credits, you can use them for the Flex fare, but not on the Standard fare. And if the price rises substantially, or if you are booking closer to the date of travel, then because you’ve paid in advance, you will only have paid $577.10 per direction.

Lastly, if you have Altitude status with Air Canada, you can earn additional eUpgrade credits if you purchase a flight pass. To do so, you’ll need to select “eUpgrade credits for eligible flight pass activities” from Bundle 2 of your Altitude Select Privileges.

Porter Airlines

Toronto-based Porter Airlines sells the Porter Pass . They operate in a very similar way to Air Canada’s – you prepay for a bundle of flight credits, and you have one year from the date of purchase to use them.

Unlike Air Canada, Porter Passes of 20 or more flight credits are transferrable to anyone else. So, a family of five could each have two round-trip flights per year if they had 20 credits at their disposal. For Porter’s destinations in Canada, each flight would cost $272 per person, which isn’t unreasonable for, say, a flight from Toronto to St. John’s.

The Qantas Explorer Pass lets you add a series of domestic flights within Australia to a transpacific booking from Canada or the United States with Qantas or American Airlines.

Adding the domestic flights is easy – just head to the multi-city booking page and sandwich them between your international flights.

Note that the routes are divided into three zones, as shone above, and each zone has an associated fare. If you stick to direct flights between cities, you’ll avoid paying the fare for two different zones.

For example, if you’re in Uluru (Ayers Rock) and you’d like to get to Adelaide, you’ll have to fly through Sydney or Melbourne, thus incurring fares from Zone B (Uluru to Sydney) and Zone A (Sydney to Adelaide). Instead, you could consider flying into Alice Springs, doing a side trip to Uluru, and then continue on to Adelaide. You could also consider incorporating a vehicle relocation into your trip.

British Airways & Other Major Carriers

British Airways’s Flight Pass covers flights between London and European hubs. This can be an alternative to low-cost carriers, whose bare-bones products may be less appealing to those who travel for business or who prefer a certain level of comfort. 

Interestingly, the price also changes depending on how far out you’d like to be able to book flights. The farther in advance you purchase, the less you pay per flight. Similarly, the closer in advance you tend to book, the more you pay per flight.

While these passes aren’t really useful for anyone visiting Europe on holidays, if you live in London or any of the hubs to which British Airways flies, and if you need to fly between the two cities often for any reason, this flight pass can save you money without being subjected to travelling on a low-cost carrier.

British Airways’s product is one of many similar flight pass products offered by major airlines across the world, and poring over the details of each airline likely wouldn’t reveal any significant differences.

There are, however, a few interesting regional flight passes that are worth discussing.

If you find yourself on an aspirational trip to the archipelagos of French Polynesia, it would be worthwhile to look into an Air Tahiti Pass . The pass allows you to travel between several or many of the islands at a very reasonable price.

For example, the Bora Bora pass allows you to visit Moorea, Huahine, Raiatea, Bora Bora, and Maupiti for either $625 (lower fare, less baggage allowance, less flexibility) or $807 (higher fare, more baggage allowance, more flexibility).

Anyone headed to Bora Bora would have to book an international flight to Tahiti before taking a separate domestic Air Tahiti flight to Bora Bora. And since Air Tahiti is the sole operator of domestic flights in French Polynesia, they charge a significant premium on this 50-minute route: fares are usually around $583 round-trip per person.

Therefore, by going with a flight pass starting at $625, you can add an additional four destinations to your French Polynesian trip for only a few dollars more, which can offer incredible value.

Each pass is valid for travel within 28 days, and your journey must begin and end in either Tahiti or Moorea. You can only visit each destination once, although stopovers of less than 24 hours in hubs are allowed. You’ll need to plan your trip according to Air Tahiti’s flight schedule, so make sure you’ve planned that out in advance.

Caribbean Airlines

Similar to the Air Tahiti Pass is the Caribbean Airlines Explorer Pass . The airline operates flights between Antigua, the Bahamas, Barbados, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, St. Lucia, St. Maarten, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Tobago, and Trinidad.

The Explorer Pass allows you to hop between three or more islands over the course of 21 days, although the fares don’t include taxes and fees for each flight segment. 

While most people who travel to the Caribbean likely visit only one island, the Explorer Pass could give you the option to experience a few different islands on one trip.

I’ve long wanted to island hop around the Caribbean, and this pass seems like a reasonably affordable way to do so, especially if combined with the possibility of redeeming Avios on select British Airways fifth-freedom flights (like Antigua–St. Kitts).

At a time when the vast majority of passengers and planes around the world remain grounded, the idea of regularly flying across the country for business or pleasure remains far-fetched for now. As soon as it becomes possible to fly again, I’m sure many of you (myself included) would like nothing more than to hop on any plane for the sole purpose of being in the clouds en route to anywhere.

While the future of frequent flying remains unsure for the time being, flight passes may be worth your consideration if you plan on spending a lot of time in one area or if you frequently travel back and forth between two areas. For those who speculate that the future cost of air travel will substantially increase, flight passes may be a way to secure relatively affordable air travel when it becomes possible to fly again.

The unprecedented drop in travel demand has triggered some incredible flight deals for those willing to commit to future flights. Among them is this one: up to half-off membership in American Airlines' AirPass program. This is similar to the promotion the airline offered in the spring.

American Airlines introduced AirPass (formerly known as AAirPass) in 1981 to boost cash flow in a financially difficult period. The program became famous for offering passes for unlimited first-class travel for life , but that perk was discontinued when it cost the airline millions in revenue.

Today, the updated program allows travelers to pre-pay for unrestricted travel at a discount and enjoy benefits like a complimentary Admirals Club membership , automatic AAdvantage elite status , instant upgrades and more. It's ideal for business travelers who frequently book full-fare flights at the last minute and for those who want a shortcut to VIP benefits.

It recently also added several new perks, including the ability to book AirPass flights on select partners and a complimentary annual Wi-Fi subscription beginning in 2021.

Typically, membership requires an annual commitment of $10,000 to $30,000, but for a limited time, as the airline faces another cash crunch , you can join for even less.

Through December 31, 2020, American Airlines allows fliers to join AirPass for as little as $5,000 per person, down from the usual $10,000. Those funds become your available balance to book travel during a one-year membership term. While still a significant investment, the price may be easier to justify for those on the fence about joining. And it still comes with the full range of benefits, including instant elite status.

An American Airlines spokesperson confirmed to TPG that this is the lowest AirPass entry point ever . "This promotion brings customers more access to the flexibility and guaranteed rates of the program, helping them look forward to future travel when the time is right for them," the spokesperson said.

American Airlines is not the only company to incentivize travelers who are ready to invest in future travel. Many hotels are running similar offers in the form of discounted gift cards . You can think of it as giving these companies a short-term loan, and in return, you'll save money on your future travels.

AirPass benefits

Members get to book unrestricted flights at fixed, discounted rates. This means you can book the last seat available on a flight without paying a last-minute price, and you won't pay any fees if you need to change or cancel your plans.

In addition to American Airlines flights, you can now book AirPass flights on Finnair, Iberia and Japan Airlines. You can now also use AirPass funds to purchase Five Star Service .

The program offers instant Gold, Platinum, Platinum Pro, Executive Platinum and even coveted Concierge Key status, depending on how much you're willing to spend. The discounted $5,000 membership level includes Gold status, while invite-only Concierge Key status requires upwards of $50,000 in spend.

In addition to the benefits that come with the elite status, all members get a complimentary Admirals Club membership , a minimum of two free checked bags, confirmed upgrades at the time of booking (when available) at no extra cost, complimentary Main Cabin Extra seating at time of booking and complimentary premium snacks and drinks in coach. Plus, starting in 2021, members will get a complimentary annual wi-fi subscription.

The elite status benefit follows the typical status calendar, and you'll keep your elite status until the year of the AirPass contract expiration. You'll also maintain all the other benefits for the life of your contract, even if you've spent all the funds in your account.

Members can also use their AirPass balance to book flights for colleagues or companions traveling with them and share benefits. Beginning November 15, members will be able to book AirPass travel directly with American through aa.com.

Is it worth it?

The main selling point of AirPass is the ability to book flexible travel at discounted rates. The program's website has a tool that lets you estimate AirPass fares, but just to give you an example, a one-way first-class flight from Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) to Chicago (ORD) booked through AirPass costs about $500 and a Flagship First Class flight from New York-JFK to London Heathrow (LHR) costs about $3,800.

These fares are significantly lower than comparable unrestricted and fully refundable published fares. Savings vary by route and class of service, and there may be cases where publicly available "flexible" fares cost less, but it is certainly possible to get value from your membership from just one flight.

All AirPass travel is considered full-fare, so you'll earn 3x Elite Qualifying Miles (EQMs) when booking business or first class, 1.5x EQMs for premium economy and 1x EQMs for economy. As is the case with other tickets, award miles are based on spend and status level.

TPG values AAdvantage Gold status at $930, assuming you fly enough to earn it organically. However, once you factor in all of the additional benefits like complimentary Main Cabin Extra seats at the time of booking (instead of within 24 hours of departure), two free checked bags (instead of one) and instant upgrades, your status will be more similar to Platinum status, which is worth around $2,200.

An Admirals Club membership for regular AAdvantage flyers usually costs $650, so you should be able to recoup roughly half of your membership commitment before factoring in the discounted airfare. Additionally, the complimentary wi-fi subscription works out to about another $600 in savings per year.

If you don't think you'll get much value from the discounted airfare, there are ways you can unlock elite-style benefits and Admirals Club membership for a lot less with a co-branded AA credit card . For instance, the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® has an annual fee of $450 and provides an Admirals Club membership, priority check-in and boarding privileges, your first checked bag free and more. American Airlines also sometimes lets members buy-up to elite status for around $650 to $2,000, though that's typically a poor value proposition.

However, the brochure doesn't explain, conceptually, how it works. Do you buy an airpass, and it gives you X number of flights at a certain cost? I see a chart with regions and prices...does a given price mean that's the price you pay for any and all tickets within that region? Or does that price mean you can take several flights within that region and pay that total cost? Something else?

I have called LATAM several times and tried in both English and in Spanish to get an explanation, and no one I speak to there even knows this exists (despite the brochure being on their website).

I would be surprised if the airpass was being discountinued. I just think it rolls over each year, as I've used to previously and many years ago. What the current terms are and whether it's still good value, I cannot help, as that may well change.

cant talk about the South American pass... but about the Brazil pass (offered by Gol and Azul)...

... you are obviously stuck with only one airline ... it may not be the optimal routing/scheduling/pricing for your travel needs...

... as you found out, the vast majority of airline staff are not familiar and/or do not want to deal with it... and it is not a DIY product that you can just book online... often one needs a knowledgeable, specialized travel agent to pull it off nowadays (e.g., for the Brazil pass people often go thru BROL in USA...)

my read of Latam South America pass... prices (until March 2019) would be the sum of those listed for one-way flights listed at end of brochure.... look under heading "Tarifa" and that would be price in US$ for that specific segment (there may be more than one fare class in some segments)...

and, as described, you need to add "All airport departure taxes are not included and must be collected at the time of issuance. "

if you are up to the legwork, add up all prices in brochure for your itinerary (knowing that it does not include ariport fees).... then use something like google flights to compare prices using a bunch of one-way tkts with multiple airlines ...

... if savings with pass are not substantial, I would just give up on it, given the hassle to get it issued...

dont forget to add the possible additional cost of getting to/from South America using only the "allowed" airlines :

It is more expensive, but you get baggage, and won't have to ticket/pay for tickets until 30 days before departure. So can make changes.

Frontier introduces new summer pass, offering nearly unlimited flights for $399

You could fly all summer long for $399 on Frontier Airlines.

The Denver-based ultra low-cost carrier is introducing a new  GoWild! Summer Pass , similar to its annual pass .

This new pass lets customers fly as often as they like between May 2 through Sept. 30.

“For people with flexible schedules, this is a terrific opportunity to have a truly epic summer and then some, soaking up rays on the beach, exploring national parks and visiting new cities," Daniel Shurz, Frontier's senior vice president of commercial, said in a statement.

The airline currently serves more than 100 destinations and will add new non-stop service between multiple cities and Puerto Rico this summer.

How does Frontier's GoWild! Summer Pass work?

You must be at least 18 years old to buy the pass. Children under the age of 15 must travel with someone who is at least 15.

Flights will be available to book on May 2. Domestic travel may be booked on Frontier's website the day before departure for domestic travel or up to 10 days before departure for international travel. 

Each flight will cost one cent, plus any applicable taxes, fees and charges, like for checked bags or specific seats. The flights will not earn miles or status.

You can fly as often as you like between May 2 through Sept. 30, pending seat availability, with the exception of certain  blackout periods  detailed online.

There are a limited number of passes available at the $399 introductory rate. They are not transferable and will automatically renew unless you cancel. Additional details can be found on Frontier's website .

New Frontier service to Puerto Rico

Starting in early May, Frontier will begin new nonstop service between the following airports and Luis Muñoz Marin International Airport (SJU), also known as San Juan Airport:

• Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI)
• Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE)
• Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW)
• Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW)
• Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW)

Frontier will also begin a one-stop service between SJU and Denver International Airport (DEN). And on May 25, the airline will begin a new nonstop service between Luis Muñoz Marin International Airport and Cancun International Airport (CUN) in Mexico.

“Puerto Rico is a hugely popular destination for leisure travelers as well as the large population of Puerto Ricans residing in the U.S. who enjoy returning to the island to visit friends and family,” Shurz said. "For those with family and friends on the island, we’re offering more options than ever to fly affordably and conveniently between a multitude of major cities and Puerto Rico.”

The airline is expanding service to other parts of Puerto Rico, with new nonstop service between Tampa International Airport (TPA) and Rafael Hernández International Airport (BQN) in Aguadilla beginning May 4. Nonstop service between Orlando International Airport (MCO) and  Mercedita International Airport (PSE) in Ponce will begin the same day.

Introductory fares for these destinations range from $49 to $69, depending on the city.
