First we will visit Blue lagoon Budikovac and Green cave on the small island of Ravnik on a south side of the island of Vis. Through a crack in the ceiling of the cave the sun's rays reflecting with a greenish color and creating a captivating light effects. After Green cave we are visiting Blue Cave on the island of Biševo around noon when the sun creates impression of blue sky. Visitors can enter the cave with a small rowing boat. Bisevo is a small island just 5.8km2 in size and only 4km away from Vis island. Only a few people live on it. Because of these conditions the nature has created a true little museum of erosion creations due to the influence of the sea and salt.

When you just sail into Stiniva cove it is hard to imagine what kind of revelation awaits at the end of the cove. A pebble beach well hidden by the cliffs on the south side of Vis becomes visible only when you get close enough. Because of its unique shape and ambience the cove has been declared a nature reserve.

The beach in Stiniva cove can be reached by a boat up to 50 meters distance and then you continue by swimming or by paddling a tender. A small fisherman’s house made of stone has been turned into a bar. The time spent at this unique place is usually used by guests for photography, snorkeling or just to relax.

Around 3600 people live on Vis island, and the most inhabited places are Vis town and Komiza. Through history the island is remembered as an allied military airport during the World War II so the seabed around Vis hides many wrecks of allied bombers shot down during the war. After the war end up until 1945. Vis was home to a strategically important Yugoslavian national army base so it was off limits to visitation by foreign nationals.

The lengthy isolation had a positive influence on the preservation of the island which in means a lot for tourism because it means that the island is packed with all sorts of attractions. Especially attractive is the cliff ridden south side of the island where there are Green cave on Ravnik island, Stiniva cove, and Budikovac island which you will have the opportunity to visit on our trips.

The small island Budikovac is located only 750 meters off Vis island and 1700 meters from the popular attraction Green cave on Ravnik island. The maritime space between Small and Large Budikovac is often described as Blue lagoon even though the color of the sea in this area is area is actually a beautiful green color, or to be more precise – turquoise.

The lagoon is protected from the northern and southern wind which prevails in the summer months so it is very suitable for anchoring and enjoying in swimming and snorkeling. There is a restaurant on Budikovac that is located in the shade of pine trees and offers a local cuisine. Right in front of the restaurant, on the southern side is a pebble beach and a vineyard. The path along the vineyard leads to a beach on the north side of island.

Hvar town carries the same name as the island itself, is the most inhabited place on the island. In front of the town, on the southern side it is naturally protected by a group of islands called Pakleni islands. The dominating structure of the town is Spanjola fortress which features a panoramic view of the entire maritime area from Hvar town to Vis and Korcula islands.

Tourism in Hvar has a long tradition and it has become world famous, especially in the last few decades because it is visited mostly by the most luxurious yachts and many world famous people and celebrities. Numerous restaurants, clubs, hotels are keeping the pace with ever increasing luxurious offerings and prices catered to a rich clientele. A walk through the town will reveal you many cultural and historic monuments while the architecture of older buildings gives away a strong influence of the Venetian Republic.

Paklinski islands (populary named Pakleni islands) are a group of islands that is comprised of 16 islands located south of Hvar town. The largest among them is Sveti Klement (Saint Clement) on which is located the most popular cove Vinogradisce which is most commonly called Palmizana.

During summer months the cove is very busy because almost all the guests located in Hvar town regularly visit Palmizana. The cove is ideally protected from all winds except the southern ones so many vessels anchor there. All bars, restaurants and clubs in the cove have a nice view on the turquoise color of the sea and the anchored ships. A light and short walk through the pine forest gets you to a beach on the north side of the island where there is a marina with all the related contents.

Blue Cave, Croatia – Introduction

Blue Cave (also known as Blue Grotto) is a natural sea cave along the rocky coastline of Biševo island in Croatia . It became world-famous due to its bright blue color that has intrigued me ever since I first saw a picture of the Blue Cave. Can it be real?!

It appears that the blue color is a natural phenomenon that is created by daylight that enters the cave through an underwater opening in the rock. The intensity of the blue color depends a lot on the season, whether it’s a sunny day, and even on the time of the day. It’s said that the Blue Cave is the most impressive on a sunny summer day just before noon.

We visited the Blue Cave on a rather gloomy morning in April and it was simply amazing. It’s hard to imagine that it would look even more blue, even more spectacular on a sunny summer day, but they say it does.

All I can say is that no matter when you visit Blue Cave in Croatia, it will definitely be worth it. If it looks that good on a cloudy day, it is worth the trip at any time.

Blue Cave – History

The Blue Cave became world-famous in 1884 when Baron Eugen von Ransonet visited this blue sea grotto in Croatia and shared his story in a local Austrian newspaper.

Blue Cave was previously only known to the locals and could only be accessed by swimming/diving. In order to make it more accessible to tourists, dynamite was used to blow up a somewhat bigger entrance to the cave – just big enough for a very small boat, but luckily not too big to ruin the cave.

In the years that followed, Blue Cave became more and more popular, attracting hundreds of tourists. Nowadays, more than 100,000 tourists visit this small sea cave every summer.

Where is Blue Cave and how to get there?

Blue Cave is located on Biševo island in the Adriatic Sea, some 70km from Split. There are just a handful of people still living on the island year-round. There are no hotels or tourist accommodations on Biševo . So all the visitors to the Blue Cave just come here for a short visit from Split, Trogir, or one of the nearby islands.

It takes 1.5 hrs to get to Blue Cave from Split or Trogir by speedboat and about an hour from Hvar.

The closest more inhabited place from where you could reach the Blue Cave with a taxi boat is Komiža town on Vis island, some 15 minutes by speedboat. 

You could consider taking a ferry from Split to Vis and then taking a taxi boat from there. However, the ferry is slow (2h20 one way) and it runs just a few times a day. Furthermore, it arrives on the other side of the island (in Vis town and not in Komiža) and a taxi boat from Vis to the Blue Cave will be quite expensive. And – you’ll only get to see the Blue Cave and nothing else. So I  really wouldn’t recommend this option unless you are staying on Vis island for at least a couple of days.

TIP: The best way to get to the Blue Cave is by joining an organized day tour from Split or Trogir or an organized day tour from Hvar .  Trying to get there on your own from any of these places will take much longer and you’d waste an entire day just trying to visit the Blue Grotto, whereas organized tours also visit many other beautiful locations nearby.

When it comes to visiting the Blue Cave in Croatia, organized tours are by far the best use of your time and money.

Visiting Blue Cave – there’s just one way to enter

There are many tours and day trips that visit the Blue Cave from Split, Hvar, Vis, or Trogir. However, no matter which tour you choose and no matter which way you get to Biševo island, there is just one company that is actually allowed to enter the Blue Cave . They have special tiny boats that are approved for entering the cave and run official ‘tours’ that last just 10-15 minutes.

Any Blue Cave tour that you book, will bring you to Bisevo island. There you will board a small boat that takes you inside the Blue Cave itself. Ticket price for this small boat is usually not included in your excursion price but the tour guide will help you buy the tickets upon arrival on the island. If you book a Blue Cave tour from Split or the nearby islands, you don’t really need to worry about any of the practical details.

The only worry is that it might be quite busy, especially if you are visiting the Blue Cave in the summer. I read that it’s not uncommon to wait an hour before you can get on the small boat to visit the cave. The good news is that you can go for a swim while you wait and there is also a café and bathroom facilities . If you go with an organized tour, your tour guide will not only take care of the tickets, but will also make sure to alert you when it’s your turn to go to the cave.

In April, we didn’t experience any delays at all and could immediately board the little boat that brought us inside the Blue Cave. It was still busy, however, and immediately after us, two other boats entered the cave. So yes, I can definitely see how it can get crowded in July or August.

Is the Blue Cave always accessible?

Blue Cave is located on a small island in the open sea. The entrance to the cave is tiny (the opening is just 1 meter high). So yes, sometimes Blue Cave can be inaccessible . Don’t worry about it too much, though, especially if you are traveling in summer, as most of the time conditions are favorable and you’ll be able to enter the cave without any problems.

However, once in a while, it happens that the waves are too high or the wind is too strong and it’s therefore too dangerous to attempt entering the cave. It’s something you can’t really know in advance or do anything about. Usually, you’ll only find out about it on the day itself. All reputable Blue Cave tours will reimburse the Blue Cave ticket price in case the cave cannot be accessed on the day of your visit.

TIP: Choose the Blue Cave tour that includes many other nice stops in its itinerary (read more about it below), so that if you wouldn’t be able to enter the cave, you still have an amazing day exploring the islands, little towns, and beautiful coastlines.

Can you swim inside the Blue Cave in Croatia?

No, swimming inside Blue Cave is not allowed . You cannot enter the cave swimming and you cannot jump into the water from the boat inside the cave either.

Honestly speaking, I think it would be much too dangerous – there are so many boats going in and out all the time and the cave is really quite small. If you want to swim, there are plenty of other amazing opportunities during the day tour.

We booked this highly-rated Blue Cave tour that runs from Trogir or from Split . After quite some research, we settled on this particular tour for several reasons:

• This Blue Cave tour included a visit to Hvar , which was the place we absolutely wanted to see. It also stopped on Vis island and visited several other nice locations, which was a bonus.
• This tour had h undreds of very good reviews and was by far the best-rated tour of all the Blue Cave tours that ran in April (most Blue Cave tours only start in May).
• I read one or two reviews from people who didn’t get to see the Blue Cave due to the weather, yet still said this trip was absolutely worth it. So I felt confident enough that our time and money wouldn’t be wasted. And indeed – even if we hadn’t been able to see the Blue Cave, I think the trip was well worth it (and yes, we spent over 400 EUR for this day trip for our family).

Blue Cave & 5 Islands tour itinerary

Most of the Blue Cave tours from Split are full-day tours that take 10-12 hours. As I mentioned, it takes quite some time to get to the Blue Grotto from Split so it would be a shame to travel that far just for that. Therefore, most tours also visit the so-called ‘5 islands’ on the same day. In addition, they usually make several photo stops at the nicest rock formations along the beautiful coastline.

The best Blue Cave tours are those that will adjust the itinerary to the season and the weather to make sure that you have the best possible time. I’m glad to say that our tour was like that.

For example, it was too cold to swim when we visited, so we had a bit more time in towns, but also visited the Green Cave and the Monk Seal Cave, and made more photo stops along the beautiful coastline. We felt that the itinerary was really well crafted. It covered all the must-see places in the area, offered enough variation, and at the same time it didn’t feel too overwhelming or too busy.

Below you can find a short overview of the most popular places that are usually included in most of the Blue Cave tours . Some are longer stops, some – just a quick photo stop. This list is also based on the tour that we took, but it might be a bit different depending on the season when you travel or the tour that you choose.

1. Blue Cave (Biševo island)

Blue Cave was the first and the most impressive stop on our day trip itinerary. Since I already covered everything you might possibly want to know about visiting the Blue Cave, I won’t repeat myself here.

2. Monk Seal Cave (Biševo island)

Just a short boat ride from the Blue Grotto, the Monk Seal Cave is one of those places that not all the tours visit, however, it’s really impressive to see.

Our boat entered the cave and we could see it from the inside, but since this stop wasn’t mentioned in our itinerary, I’m not sure if they also do this in high season, or only once in a while when the weather isn’t suitable for swimming (and they, therefore, have more time for other places).

The cave is named after the Mediterranean Monk Seals who used to live here until several decades ago. Since they were in direct competition with the local fishermen, you can guess the fate of the Monk Seals… Nowadays, they are almost extinct and the chances of seeing Monk Seals along the coast of Bisevo island are close to zero.

3. Komiža village (Vis Island)

The second stop, just a short boat ride from the Blue Cave, was the picturesque village of Komiža on Vis island . This is a very cozy fishermen’s town with stone houses, narrow streets, and a nice waterfront area with several restaurants and shops. At least in April, when we visited, Komiža had a really nice local feel. Fishermen were working on their boats, older people chatting on the promenade along the little harbor, and the local cats were curiously inspecting the visitors…

According to our guide, there are more registered boats in Komiža town than people living there.

We had a bit over an hour to discover the town and since our kids were getting hungry, we decided to have an early lunch in Komiža. Note that lunch is not included in any of the Blue Cave tours, but there are several places where you can have lunch during the day.

Interesting fact: The film Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again is set in Greece, but was actually filmed on Vis island in Croatia.

4. Stiniva Cove (Vis Island)

Another popular stop is Stiniva Cove in Stiniva Bay , also on the island of Vis. This is quite a unique place and a protected natural monument.

The cove is surrounded by two high cliffs with just a narrow opening to the sea. It’s a secluded and somewhat hidden beach, a perfect place to go swimming or snorkeling.

The coastline and the beach here reminded us of the beautiful beaches in the Algarve region in Portugal and also of the Great Ocean Road in Australia . Simply stunning!

5. Green Cave (Ravnik Island)

Since we visited in the low season, we also stopped at the Green Cave on Ravnik Island (one a few advantages of visiting Croatia in April ). It’s actually just a sea cave with a small hole on top through which the sun rays light up a small part of the cave, giving it a nice green glow.

The green light is very small and incomparable to the Blue Cave. It’s something nice to see, but not something you should feel sorry about if you miss it.

In high season, there is a fee to enter the Green Cave, and it’s usually not included in any of the Blue Cave tours. You can ask the guides to visit the cave, but you’ll have to pay for the entrance yourself.

6. Turquoise Lagoon on Budikovac Island

Budikovac island is a private island, known for its sandy beach and crystal clear sea. In summer, the owner runs a little restaurant and a bar here, and tour boats usually stop at the Turquoise Lagoon (also called the Blue Lagoon) for at least an hour.

It’s a great place to go swimming or snorkeling (snorkeling gear is included with the tour that we booked and many other Blue Cave tours from Split). Alternatively, you can just relax on the beach or grab a drink at the bar.

7. Paklinski Islands

Paklinksi or Pakleni islands just near Hvar are simply spectacular. You’d probably need to see it from the air in order to appreciate how unique the landscape here is. But even just seeing it from the boat, this place is simply amazing – green little islands scattered in the azure-blue waters are well worth a short stop.

Palmižana bay is the most popular stop of the Paklinksi islands, best known as a place to party. Here you’ll find some restaurants, beach bars, and some Blue Cave tours stop here for a longer time, while others will just pass by on their way to Hvar. This is the place where the rich and famous dock their luxury yachts in summer.

8. Hvar town (Hvar Island)

One of the reasons we chose this particular Blue Cave tour from Split was because we really wanted to see the town of Hvar . All the travel guides describe Hvar as one of the most beautiful and must-see places in Croatia, so this day trip was the perfect way to incorporate a short visit in our Croatia trip itinerary without having to spend much extra time or money.

Hvar is an expensive luxury resort with a beautiful little harbor and a waterside promenade. Our tour stopped here for 2.5 hours which gave us plenty of time to see all the highlights.

If there is one thing you really shouldn’t miss in Hvar is the Spanish Fortress. This 16th-century fortress offers incredible views not just over the picturesque Hvar town, but also of the Pakleni islands in the distance.

Other places to see in Hvar include the Cathedral and the nice town square around it, Franciscan Monastery , and also the historic Bishop’s Palace (now a hotel that’s being renovated).

Interesting to see is also the largest fingerprint in the world . It’s a big mosaic on the floor at the Hvar harbor, next to a monument to Ivan Vučetić. He was born in Hvar, but emigrated to Argentina. He discovered that each fingerprint is unique and unrepeatable, and thus laid the foundation for the modern dactyloscopy.

9. Dolphins

We never expected to see dolphins on the Blue Cave tour, but apparently, they are often seen in the area. And indeed, we were extremely lucky to run into a group of dolphins on our way from Hvar back to Split.

So yes, it’s possible to see dolphins on the Blue Cave tour as well. For us, it was just the cherry on the cake and a nice way to end the beautiful day of island-hopping and visiting some of the nicest coastal towns and landscapes of Croatia.

There are so many tours that visit the Blue Cave in Croatia that it might be overwhelming to try to figure out which one to choose. If you are looking for a Blue Cave tour from Split, it might look that everyone who has a boat also runs a tour… However, not all of them are the same – not just in terms of itinerary, but also the boats that they use, safety onboard, insurance they have, etc.

Since Blue Cave tours are quite long (10-12 hours) and expensive (usually around 100-180 EUR per person or more), I strongly suggest that yo u do some research upfront and book your tour online . This allows you to check the exact itinerary, read customer reviews, and to be certain that you are booking with a reputable officially registered company that is in order with safety regulations.

• 5 Islands, Blue Cave and Hvar Tour from Trogir or Split . This is the tour that we did and I already explained some of its advantages above. It has a very good itinerary with enough variation between sightseeing and swimming stops, great reviews, and competitive price. We loved the speedboat, the guides were good, and the lively music on the boat made the long-distance rides feel shorter.
• If this tour isn’t available, try this very similar Blue Cave & 5 Islands Tour from Split . It’s very comparable in terms of itinerary and price . As I said, there are many options, but make sure to read all the details carefully – there are quite some tours that cost just as much but don’t include the entrance ticket to the Blue Cave, some others have a different itinerary, etc.
• All-in Blue Cave Tour with Lunch from Split . This tour has pretty much the same itinerary as the one that we did, but it’s slightly more expensive because they use a more luxurious boat and everything is included . It’s also a speedboat, but the seating is different (you don’t have to sit like on a motorbike like on most other boats) and the boat also has a small roof that offers some shade that can be very welcome on hot summer days. So if you are looking for more comfort and don’t mind a slightly higher price (which also includes lunch), this might be a better option for you.
• Blue and Green Caves: Full-Day Speedboat Tour from Hvar . This tour is very similar to the ones that run from Split, but starts and ends in Hvar . Obviously, the Blue Cave tour from Hvar is much shorter as a visit to Hvar isn’t included.

Here is some practical information for visiting the Blue Cave with a tour .

• Blue Cave tours from Split or Trogir will usually take 10-12 hours. From Hvar – 8 hours. It’s the best day trip you can make in Croatia.
• Most speedboat tours aren’t suitable for young kids under 3 years old or people with back problems .
• We did this Blue Cave tour with kids , age 8, 8, and 10 and they had the time of their lives. They absolutely love speedboat tours!
• In summer, make sure to wear your swimwear and take a towel . Sun protection is a must.
• It can be quite windy and cold on the boat. Most tour operators offer free jackets , but if you travel on a colder day in the shoulder season, make sure to also wear a sweater and a jacket of your own.
• Lunch is not included in most tours, but there are several places where you can have lunch during the day.
• Most tours will offer free bottled water , but it’s always wise to take some water with you as well.
• I recommend packing all your belongings in a waterproof dry bag .

Hi! thanks for the tips! Do you know if it's possible/feasible to do this tour with my luggage? Because I would like to start in Split and finish it in Hvar, without returning to Split, to save one ferry trip. But I'm not sure it's possible to go on a speedboat with a luggage.

Hi Eliana, I doubt that any tour company will let you take any bag bigger than a small day backpack with you. There is really no place for luggage on speedboats. That being said, you can always contact a few companies directly and ask how/if it could be arranged. Maybe it's possible if you take a tour on a bigger boat... Good luck!

Blue cave tours can generally depart from Split, Hvar, or Vis, and can be also advertised as Five islands tour or Four island tour, depending on the itinerary. While branding might be different, all tours generally cover similar areas, Vis island and its surroundings and Hvar with its surroundings. The Blue Cave group tour from Hvar costs from 80 euros per person (low season) to 100 euros per person (high season) + entrance fees for the caves. From Split, due to a greater distance, it costs almost twice as much.   Private tours can cost anywhere from 550 euros up , with gasoline and skipper included in the price. Also, if you wish to visit the Green Cave, the entrance will cost you around 10 euros (the exact price for summer 2023 to be announced). Other spots that are typically included in the Blue Cave tour are Stiniva Beach, Pakleni Islands (Palmižana bay), and, if there is time, some hidden bays on Vis Island. The duration of the Blue Cave tour is generally around 10 to 12 hours for departures from Split  or 8 hours for departures from Hvar. We advise departures from Hvar as you will not waste much time in the ride.

While for many the price is the most important factor when deciding on which tour to select, we remind you that it can hide some drawbacks, too.  Bear in mind that usually there is a reason behind reduced pricing, especially in high season. WHICH LOCATIONS TO VISIT ON YOUR BLUE CAVE TOUR

Choosing which locations to visit on your Blue Cave tour highly depends on whether you choose a private or a group option . Expectedly, the private Blue Cave tour is very customizable and thus offers more flexibility.

PRIVATE TOUR: 

Private tours usually cost between 400 and 1000 euros and can depart anytime you prefer. However, we recommend departing around 9 or 9:30 from Hvar, as this will give you the upper hand over the many group tours that all depart from Hvar at 10:30. If you select a private boat tour, you can arrange the itinerary on the go, just chat with your skipper and tell him what your preferences are. The absolute highlights are Blue cave and Stiniva , so we definitely recommend visiting those two. The others vary according to your preferences. Here is a list of possible options you can choose from, mix and match in order to create your perfect itinerary:

KOMIZA An idyllic little town on the southern side of Vis island. Komiza used to be a fisherman village and was recently a filming location of Mamma Mia 2. Here you can take a walk across the old town, explore the little alleyways and enjoy good local restaurants like Jastozera.

an amazing tiny bay tucked in between rocks. This beach is not easy to spot, therefore it is often one of the rare places on Vis island that is not overflown with tourists.

SMOKOVA A beautiful sandy beach on the north side of Vis island. This beach is not easy to reach by land, therefore it is favored by sailors who want to get away from the crowds.

Unlike the Blue cave which is protected and can only be visited by boat, the Green cave allows its visitors to take a swim in its emerald interior. Bear in mind that there is an entrance fee to get inside the cave, which amounts to around 10 euros and should be paid in cash.

VLAKA This amazing little bay situated on Pakleni islands is a perfect refuge for those who want to try autochthonous food in a perfectly still and peaceful environment. The two restaurants that we recommend there are Dionis and Fisherman’s house Tonci. The menu list is not long, as their objective is to offer quality, local and fresh dishes to their tables. Winetasting can also be arranged in Vlaka, just ask your skipper about it.

VELA GARŠKA Another amazing bay far from the eyes of the crowds. Vela Garska is located on the southern coast of Hvar, not too far from Hvar town, yet it is only reachable by boat, which gives it a special charm. One of the best ways to finish your day is with a cocktail or a glass of wine in Calma beach bar, before heading back to Hvar town.

GROUP TOUR: 

However, private tours do cost a bit more than the daily group tours, therefore, you might want to save some money and join a group tour . These kinds of tours cost from 80 euros to 100 euros  and depart every day at 10:30 from Hvar . The boats are big enough to comfortably accommodate 12 persons + the skipper. The itinerary is fixed and is usually consisted of the most popular locations, which, together with the Blue cave include:

This bay was formed during the Ice Age when the sea level was much lower than today. It was initially shaped as a cave, but the ceiling of the cave collapsed several thousand years ago leaving the impressive hanging cliffs that you can see today. When you get inside, you will notice layers of limestone; in these layers, fossils were found that date from the age of dinosaurs. Today, Stiniva Bay is a protected part of nature . That is why you can see that, in order to protect the cove from pollution, there is a rope that prohibits the boats from entering the cove. . In order to get inside, you will have to swim in or pull yourselves on a dingy to the shore. On the shore, there is one beach bar where you will find all sorts of beverages and some simple snacks like salads and sandwiches. Also, they are used to taking wet cash.

The Green Cave got its name from the greenish reflection of the algae  that live on its walls.  On the ceiling of the cave you will see a little hole through which sunbeams pass and create beautiful reflections on the sea. The hole was likely man-made during one of the world wars.        

In World War 2, many smaller warships would hide inside the Green Cave . When you get inside you might notice that the cave is also home to several bird species. Another great thing about the Green Cave is that, unlike the Blue Cave, you are allowed to swim and snorkel inside it, so strap on your masks and let’s check it out!

Pakleni islands

Pakleni, also known as Paklinski islands,are wrongly translated to Hell’s Islands as the Croatian word pakao means hell. But they actually got their name not from the word pakao, but from paklina, tree resin (hr. smola), which was very important in the past. By cutting the pine trees, the resin was squeezed out of the cracks. It was used for coating ships,  but also as a cure for bruises in humans and animals.

The oldest inhabitants of Pakleni islands were the Illyrians. If you take a walk around the island, on several places you will find piles of rocks, which show that Pakleni islands served as a graveyard for the Illyrians . Also, remains of Roman architecture have been found in Vlaka Bay, where you can see remains of villa rustica and a mosaic.

Additional stop

If there is enough time, as an additional stop the skipper might take you to one of the several beautiful hidden beaches on Vis Island that are on the way.  Some of our favorites are Pritiscina and Smokova. Google image search of these places won’t show you much as the locals selfishly hide them for themselves, but take our word for it that these will be among the highlights of your trip.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT THE BLUE CAVE (MONTH, TIME, WEATHER)

MONTH : Blue Cave can be visited anytime during the tourist season. Usually, it is open from early April until late October. Bear in mind that it is not allowed to swim in the Blue Cave, therefore you can enjoy it during that entire period, regardless of the water temperature.

WEATHER : As the entrance into the Blue Cave is very small and waves can easily disrupt its entrance, an important thing to keep in mind when visiting the Blue Cave are the weather conditions. While the rain itself is not an issue, any strong wind, can obstruct the entrance into the Blue cave . As winds change frequently in Dalmatia, it does happen at times (not too frequently, though) that because of a sudden change in wind/waves, the Blue Cave has to close for visitors. Ideally, the tour operators can predict this a day in advance, but it is not always the case. Don’t worry though, in case the Blue Cave is closed and it is well-known before your departure, the operator should give you the option to reschedule, or to do the tour anyways but with some additional locations that would make up for the Blue cave. We were not surprised to find out that many guests were as satisfied with those locations as they were with the Blue cave.

TIMINGS : You will find on many websites that the best time to visit the Blue cave is between 11 and noon. However, the truth is, although the color IS slightly more intense at that time as the sun is at its highest point, the difference isn’t so big or noticeable. You will enjoy the Blue cave just as much if you visit it a couple of hours earlier or after. Instead, you should focus on hours which are less busy with tourists. Your skipper will do his or her best to estimate those timings, as they change daily. Therefore, the best time to visit the Blue cave is anywhere between 9 am and 4 pm , as long as there are not too many crowds.

WHAT TO BRING ON YOUR BLUE CAVE TOUR

For your Blue Cave tour, it is recommendable to bring towels and swimsuits if you intend to swim. In the pre- and post-season (April, May, September, and October) it is highly recommendable to bring a pair of long sleeves as the boat ride can be a bit cold. Some drinks are provided on the boat, yet if you wish to bring your own drinks , whether alcoholic or non, feel free to do so. Snorkeling masks are generally provided on the boats, but without the snorkeling tube, for sanitary reasons. It is also advisable to bring some snacks , as the restaurant stop is the last one of the day (usually around 3 pm) so you might get hungry by that time. Also, most people bring their phones , and wallets as there will be some restaurants and bars at your stops, but also because the entrance fee into the Blue and Green caves are generally not included in the price. Bear in mind, though, that there are no safety lockers on the boat, so do not bring more than necessary. However, Croatia is well-known to be a safe destination and we have never had a single thievery case in Mario rent.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO VISIT JUST THE BLUE CAVE?

A question we often get is whether it is possible to visit just the Blue Cave and go back. The answer is: yes, but it is not advisable. There is no such group tour from Hvar or Split that goes straight to Blue cave and back, without stopping at some other locations. This can only be done if you hire a private speedboat for a couple of hours (which can cost anywhere from 350 euros up) which will take you to the Blue Cave and bring you back. While this is doable, it does not offer the best quality-to-price ratio. Also, since the Blue Cave is the most distant point of the tour, hiring a boat that would take you just there would mean that you would pass by many beautiful locations that are on the way to the Blue Cave, some of which are equally as stunning, without seeing them. For example, you will pass by Stiniva bay, which was voted one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. For that reason, we advise leaving an entire day for this tour if possible, as this way you will get to experience most must-see attractions in one go.

All in all, visiting the Blue Cave is definitely one of the things you must do when in Croatia, especially when in Hvar. Whether you decide to do it in a group or privately is entirely up to you, but make sure you do your research before you make a reservation, and we guarantee this will be the experience you will remember for the rest of your life.

Daily group tour to the Blue Cave: The Blue Cave tour from Hvar costs 80 euros per person in the low season (May, June, Sept, Oct) and 100 euros per person in the peak season (July and August).  The price does not include the entrance fee to the Blue Cave, which costs an additional 12-18 euros, and the Green Cave, which costs 10 euros.

While swimming was initially allowed in the Blue cave, today it is no longer the case as it is a protected natural site. The tour of the Blue Cave is done on a small wooden boat, visitors can take their cameras and take photos, but they cannot leave the boat nor swim inside the cave at any point.

Join us on our Blue Cave Excursion, and spend the day island-hopping through Vis and the Pakleni Islands! With five amazing stops, you’ll get the chance to see the enchanting Blue Cave, and swim at some of the most magnificent beaches in this archipelago!

After starting from Hvar Town at 10:30, we are heading to Vis island which takes 30 – 40 min. We make our first stop at Budikovac Blue Lagoon. The turquoise waters of this islet make it a perfect place for swimming and snorkeling! Next, we head towards the Green Cave on Ravnik island, for sightseeing its natural emerald lighting. Another beach we visit is the incredible Stiniva Cove, hidden behind the huge cliffs that encircle the bay.

The highlight of our tour

The mesmerizing Blue Cave is located on Biševo island. Upon arriving you take a small shuttle boat to experience the blue lighting effect created by the sandy seafloor reflecting the sunlight.

Depending on crowdness and weather conditions we are visiting one or more non – touristy spots on Vis or Biševo island. It can be  Pritišćina bay – the smallest beach on Vis island, small secreet caves, or some beautifull bay on Pakleni islands.

The last stop of the tour is the Lunch stop. It can be on Pakleni Islands, south shore of Hvar island or on Vis island. You’ll have time for lunch at one of the seaside restaurants. (not included in the price).

Back to Hvar around 6 – 7PM. (Itinerary can be changed depanding on the weather conditions to provide a better experience).

For our Blue Cave tour it is not necessary to spend a lot of words, we both know that she took the title of HOT TOUR a long time ago.

… But we will still do our best to give you some details which is good to know.

If you get up early in the morning and decide to spend your day with us, it will certainly be a good decision because you will have an exciting long drive to Bisevo, the island where the Blue Cave is located.

To fully experience the jewel of the Adriatic you need to enter in the hours when the sun is at its peak to experience the blueness that everyone is talking about.

The story of the most beautiful points of the Adriatic does not end there, but continues with Stiniva, an interesting bay that has been declared the most beautiful in Europe. Take some swim time, explore the seabed and you will see why it is a leader in beauty.

Since you are in Dalmatia and any time for swimming is worth it, there’s time for the stunning Green Cave on Ravnik Island. When the sun is high, light enters the grotto though a large opening at the top of the cave which creates a dazzling array of silver and green colors.

You can also use your time for lunch and rest in the magical dalmatian place Komiža – the pearl of the island, then enjoy in one more swimming stop by skipper’s choice.

Walk along one of the most beautiful promenades in city of Hvar and take some coffee shot on the waterfront. As in every our tour, you will not miss to visit the inevitable Military Tunnel, a place you simply must experience.

Given that the Blue Cave Experience tour depends on weather conditions, in case of unexpected closure of Blue Cave and impossibility of visit due to the predicted wind or sudden change of weather, we undertake to offer an alternative destination on this tour instead of Blue Cave.

The amazing Blue Cave tour starts from Bol Harbour; you will step on our excursion speedboat for a thrilling 90-minute ride to Bisevo Island and its marvelous Blue Cave. To appreciate its ethereal beauty, we’ll arrive at the time of the day when the sunlight reflected through the seafloor bathes the entire cave in aquamarine light. At the same time, objects in the water are turned into shimmering silver.

After visiting the Blue Cave on Bisevo Island, we will slice through the Adriatic to explore Stiniva Bay on Vis Island. We’ll cruise around the island to stop in the unique Stiniva Bay and optional swim in the stunning Green Cave on Ravnik Island.

When the sun is high, light enters the Green cave (grotto) on Ravnik Island through a large opening at the top, creating a dazzling array of silver and green colors. The Green Cave is spacious, and the sea depth is 3 to 5 meters.

Next is the town of Komiža on Vis Island, a picture-perfect, magical old town, the perfect spot for a light lunch and time to rest.

Our final destination is the town of Hvar on Hvar Island, one of the most beautiful harbors on the Adriatic and with a rich cultural heritage. Its seven-century old walls still survive, and many of the 15th-17th century Venetian era noble houses and public buildings. The easy walk around the town to discover its many charms is a delight.

After enjoying Hvar town and maybe having a drink in one of the famous cafes, it’s time to return to Bol on our speedboat to finalize our Blue Cave tour. On the way back, we will stop for you to see the military tunnels on Brac Island, where the military ships/submarines were hidden during the Cold War.

We took the blue cave tour as a family of 4 with Kreso as our guide/skipper. We had an amazing experience. While the wait for the Blue cave was over 2 hours long Kreso added and extra hour and 15 minutes to our tour to ensure that we did not miss out on any of the experiences. The Blue cave was magical and worth the wait. Then we drove to Stiniva Bay where we swam/snorkeled from the boat to the beach. The color of the water, light shafts illuminating the depths and lots of fish to see – fabulous. We got to visit the blue lagoon for more water activities, Vis, Hvar and learn local military history. Kreso made the day fun and recommended the best locations. We had music, cherry liqueur and space at the back of the boat to lie out. Overall the best experience of our holiday and I would highly recommend it.
