Kondana caves trek ❤️beautiful karjat caves hidden behind waterfall.

Last Sunday i visited the Kataldhar Waterfall (Lonavla) which is visible from the famous Rajmachi fort in Lonavla. Some one told me that at the bottom of Rajmachi hill there are beautiful Buddhist Caves known as Kondana caves Karjat . On searching some photos for the Kondana caves i was mesmerised & had to visit here at the earliest. The architecture here is out of this world & imagining it being built without any modern equipment just makes curious as to how intelligent our ancestors were. Got to know that Kondana caves trek is a short trek and doable for families as well. But i thought let me first check it out before getting my parents here. In this Kondana caves trek blog you will find all the information to plan this easy trek yourself. Similar adventures like this one at the end of this post .

How long is the Kondana Caves trek ?

Niraj, how much time does it take for Kondana caves trek ? It takes about 60 minutes to complete this trek at a slow pace. Even elderly people with basic walking / trekking stamina can complete this trek in good time. Since the trek is well marked no guide is needed for Kondana caves trek. It may take more time to reach the base than the actual trek to Kondana caves Karjat

Is Kondana Caves Trek difficult for beginners ?

Kondana caves is one of the easiest treks in Sahyadri. A super easy trail takes you from the base village to the caves. Kondana caves falls on the Rajmachi trek route from Karjat side. As such the trail is properly maintained and no chances of getting lost here.

Kondana caves trek to Rajmachi

Things to see near Kondana caves Karjat

Along with Kondana caves trek you can also visit N agnath Caves which is located in the opposite hill. Both these short treks can be easily planned in the same day . From Kondana caves there is a trail that goes to Rajmachi fort as well

Khane me kya hai?

Many people provide tasty home-made food at Kondana village. You can give a order after you reach here and eat it on your way back. Also from Thakurwadi ( trek start point) there are many temporary stalls on the kondana trek route on monsoon weekends. For any other day apart from monsoon weekends mostly there are no stalls

Water: There are many waterfalls enroute. However for non-monsoon days make sure to carry atleast 2 litres per head.

How to reach Kondana Caves from Mumbai & Pune

Where are the Kondana caves located ? Kondana caves are situated on trek route of Rajmachi from Karjat side. Namesake Kondana village , Karjat is the base village for the trek. Kondana is abut 12kms from Karjat, 40kms from Panvel, 80kms from Mumbai & 115km from Pune.

Karjat > Kondivade > Kondana village > Thakurwadi ( Trek start point) > Kondana Caves > Rajmachi

Karjat is the nearest Railway station.

Auto-Rickshaw: From Karjat Station you can walk for some 10 minutes to reach Shreeram Pul / Bridge from where you will get Rickshaws to Kondiwade village. ( 200 Rs for the entire Rickshaw. 25-30 Rs for Sharing). You can ask the driver to drop you to Kondana village for an extra amount.

ST Bus: After you reach the Karjat railway station walk to the bus stand and enquire. There are many bus going from Karjat to Khandpe. Ask them to drop for Kondana caves. From the drop point you will need to walk 4 km if you dont get any rickshaw till Kondana village

Private Vehicle: Drive all the way to Karjat and take right from after Shreeram pul . Continue to Kondana village. The road is a bit rough after Kondivade till Kondana village. From Kondana to thakurwardi ( 10 minutes walk ) is bit rougher and can be easily avoided. i.e. Park your car at Kondana village.

Once you have reached Kondana the road goes ahead to a small village called Thakurwadi from where the small trek starts. ( The same trek route goes ahead to Rajmachi as well It takes almost 2-3 hrs from here to reach Rajmachi base village – Udhewadi)

What should I carry on this trek ?

First few things you must carry are qualities of a good human being - never trouble wild life, never draw on fort walls, never risk your life for selfies, never throw plastic anywhere (carry back all waste) and never play loud music. When in nature behave like animals. BE ONE WITH NATURE

On treks, first preference for food is ghar ka khana, fruits, dry fruits, lemon juice & lots of water over biscuits, breads and carbonated drinks. Also I do carry 1₹ chocolates for quick energy boosts. My normal attire includes full sleeved clothes , cap & proper trek shoes ( No flip-flops) Good goggles i.e anti-glares are must for summer treks. I also carry safety gadgets like fire starter, waterproof torch, whistle, first-aid just in case.

Kondana Caves Trek Blog: TheFreeBird’s journey

Since i dont like to travel with crowd I selected one weekday & I took my school mate Shrinivass with me. I am creating memories with my freinds – one trek at a time. Last Sunday i trekked to Kataldhar waterfall with Amit, before that Devkund waterfall with Vishal, Padargad with Omkar and so on. Here are all the sahyadri treks i’ve been to. I took out my bike and drove all the way to Thakurwadi .

 ulhas river enoute

As we moved further from Karjat towards Kondivade greenery took over. Paddy cultivation was in full flow and it was all green till our eyes could see. Soon we crossed Radisson Blue hotel and move ahead till we reached Khandpe. From here the route splits and we took a right from here towards Kondana.

Taking right towards Kondana caves

After this diversion the off roading starts till Kondana . Enroute we crossed many rivers ,streams where one can easily do a pre-wedding shoot. After a while Ulhas river was back to meet us on the right side. At kondana village Ulhas river curves beautifully and makes up for a picturesque spot. There was a guy fishing on the banks of the river. I requested him to try his fishing rod for some time which really got me excited. Even after 10minutes there was not a single bite and I continued my journey ahead

Raods for Kondana caves are not in good condition

I took my bike all the way to Thakurwadi. From Kondana village the road gets real bad. It would be wise to park your cars here and walk 10 minutes further to Thakurwadi. Some rich kid even drove his Dad’s low clearance Mercedes right till Thakurwadi scrapping the road. At Thakurwadi a board on left designates the start of the Kondana trail. Also there are couple of shops here to indicate the trail- start

And the trek starts

We crossed few streams and passed some very old trees. After a while there was a small waterfall . I am pretty sure this waterfall would be a major attraction during heavy rains. Right now the waterfall was lazy

People enjoying the small waterfall

Since we were already late we didnt get into the waterfall . Just few pics and we raced towards the Caves. Eating a hot maize in monsoon is my favourite and i was just hoping to find a food stall enroute where i can get one. It was half an hour since the trek start and I had not seen a single stall. It felt like i wont have the maize that day. Though I was more excited with anticipation of the waterfall over the Kondana caves. As fate would have it both of my hopes were satisfied as i neared the caves

Kondana caves jungle trek. Food

Kondana caves made a dramatic appearance with a waterfall covering left half of the cave. The excitement to have reached centuries old Engineering marvel was tremendous

Kondana caves trek blog : Kondana Caves

I could easily spot two big caves at the entrance. And few more to the left which could have been maintained properly. And to the extreme left was another cave which was cordoned off. This cordoned off cave received water from the waterfall and had a small tank which my sixth sense tells would have been used for drinking during its hey days.

Buddhist Kondana caves on Rajmachi trek

The main cave has a stupa which is restoration work-in-progress. Archaelogical survey of India have been working on this site for years to get it to its glory days. A lot remains to be done. This cave has all the features like the other Buddhist caves like Vihara, chaitya , stupa etc. If you are interested in such history tit-bits just google Buddhist caves.

Kondana caves stupa

The place is dilapidated and in process of renovation but you can definitely feel the peace here. The second siginificant cave was located a bit high and have stairs to reach here .

Buddhist Kondana caves on Rajmachi trek

The internal of this huge cave is mind-boggling & to think of something like this being build centuries ago with simple tools and human spirit is astounding. This might have been one of the places where the Buddhist monk used to stay called Vihara . It would have been peaceful here if it was maintained properly & not for the smell of bat shit. Any case the view from here was brilliant.

Kondana caves trek blog : Kondana Caves

With this since it was almost 1800 hrs , an hour past the caves official closure time we decided to head back . But not before clicking 100 ‘s of photos.

Kondana caves trek KArjat

Kondana caves trek is very simple and can easily make up for a family outing . I would definitely get my parents here. Infact I came here to recce the area if its fit for my parents and if they are fit for it. Will be bringing them here soon enough.

I have also prepared a short video for Kondana trek. Make sure to subscribe to my Youtube channel for peaceful & offbeat places.

Some of the greatest joys of a corporate life are hidden within the weekends; One such recent getaway took me to this amazing little place hidden from the hoard and unknown to a good portion of the regular trek groups. Kondana Caves are a bunch of ancient Buddhist caves carved out of rock somewhere in the region of 200 BC – 100 BC. Situated on the Rajmachi mountain, 20-25 kms off Karjat, we stumbled upon this place more by accident than intent. Our planned destination happened to be the scenic Malshej Ghat (supposedly one of the most beautiful waterfalls around the region), but had to  turn back from the base of the Ghat since the landslide that occurred a couple of days ago still had debris spewed all over the road rendering it pretty much in-navigable.

On the recommendation of a couple of locals, we then decided to drive over to Kondana Caves instead. The ride from through Ulhasnagar towards Karjat was somewhat more resembling of a roller-coaster than a road, but these are things you learn to live with once you start embracing the outdoors don’t you? The caves are fairly popular with the locals once you pass the Karjat phata, you can ask around for the way and folk are generally more than eager to help you out. Beware though, their perceptions of time and distance are heavily skewed compared to yours. A couple of kms or a 2 minute drive in their words will usually mean your destination is at least 10kms or 30 minutes away. Although bumpy, the ride to the Caves was a scenic one, flanked on one side by rural landscape & the other by a mild looking river, which can get pretty ferocious in the rains. You need to cross the base village of Kondhivde to reach the base of Rajmachi and then climb up on foot.

The trek in itself is very mild in nature – nothing too technical. In fact we, as a group were complete novices at treks and neither of us had any difficulties climbing right to the top. Of course the terrain is rugged and the rain makes everything mucky – to the extent that your next footstep does need some thought unless you don’t mind slipping and rolling around in the muck. Personally, if you’re comfortable climbing barefoot, that’s the best approach to take when the muck is excessive. I noticed a barrage of lost chappals and shoe soles claimed by the muck very early in the climb and decided it was wiser to go barefoot than have your footwear stuck in the muck and pull you back all the time. If it’s been raining the same day, you will be fortunate enough to come across 3-4 streams (or waterfalls) while you climb – none of them are too dangerous and easily cross-able.

The Caves by the way, are a National Monument and it’s easy to see why. Carved almost whole out of a rock at a time when tools were in all likelihood an unknown commodity, you can’t help but appreciate the mind-numbing detail. Although some of the caves are now lost to an earthquake in the 19th century (or we couldn’t find them in any case) the main opening in itself is a majestic sight. Standing right at its mouth, you’re literally under a brilliant waterfall, which by the way, can batter you like a brick if you stand too long. It was a shame to see names written out in chalk with a heart over some of the walls & carvings – never really understood the motivation behind this and never will. Like who the fuck gives a holy shit if Neha & Viraj were here and are in love? Do people really not understand that something created by someone else after timeless effort & pain deserves more than a rash act of rebellious, passionate degradation?

We’d love to have met a local or a guide who could explain more about the Caves and their history but weren’t blessed with such luck. Anyway, I suppose we still had more than we could have asked for after our initial plan failed as brilliantly as Ram Gopal Verma’s Aag. We climbed down at double speed and were on our way back to our dreary lives, wondering how things would have been different if we could have lived like this more often than not.

Kondana Caves- A Complete Guide you show know before going to trek

Overview of the kondana caves, karjat.

Kondana Caves is situated in the dense forest close to Kondana Village which is roughly at the distance of 15 km from Karjat in Maharashtra and 33 km from the north side of Lonavala. These caves were found back in 1st Century BC and display detailed engravings of Buddhist architecture. Despite several of the caves being damaged by an earthquake in 1900, it is still worthwhile to visit the ones that are still in place. One can explore various chambers of caves and soak in the majestic ambience of the stone-cut architecture. The adjacent waterfalls further add a visual delight to the look of these caves during the monsoon.

Kondana Caves Trek

This trek journey is the ideal area to start your experience as a trekker because of its moderate terrain, which is relatively readily traveled. There are several trekking organizations that one can join, however one can easily arrange a day walk without any guidance.

Trekkers can arrive at the Karjat station and then either hire a car or book a state bus to go to the base level settlement. It takes about 60 minutes to walk from the main village to reach the cave. If your trek includes Rajmachi Fort you can easily access the cave by walking down the western slope of the Rajmachi Fort. Some trees and rocks indicate directions that can be followed as an indication.

Visitor Advice for Kondana Caves

Before signing up for the Trek, talk to your doctor.

Dress properly for your trek.

If you plan to trek during the monsoon, Don’t forget to carry your raincoat.

Always keep a first aid kit, enough dry food, and drink with you.

Keep your prescription medication along with you.

Be careful as you walk through the dense vegetation.

Visitors are accountable for their own safety and should only visit the place during the day.

History of Kondana Caves

Kondana Caves is one of the three sister caves which was found during an excavation in 1st Century BC. Apart from this cave two more caves that are Karla Caves and Bhaje Caves were found. These caves are primarily used by Buddists monks for their meditation, especially during the monsoon season. In total it is a group of 16 caves that are the house of Chaitya which elaborate carved antique statues along Viharas with meditation pods, and Stupas that reflect Buddhist history and serve as a wonderful example of traditional Buddhist architectural techniques.

It is one of the few remaining standing rock-cut monuments in Maharashtra. The structures were carved with incredible precision and symmetry and hold sacred significance for the Buddhist community.

Sculptures in the Kondana Caves

You will undoubtedly be fascinated by Kondana Caves' historic carvings and sculptures. The embellishments in this area, depict both men and women in graceful dance positions, are held together by large octagonal pillars. Exploring these caves is a breathtaking experience with exquisitely crafted craftsmanship which can be seen in every corner. The meditation pods in these caverns have a special feature and offer the ideal setting for reflection and meditation.

Best time to visit Kondana Caves

The greatest time to visit the Kondana caves is from September to February since weather is warm and dry, making it simpler to trek to and through the tunnels. If you prefer monsoon treks into the dense vegetation surrounding then plan your visit from June to September.

How to reach towards Kondana Caves

From Karjat, take a bus or rickshaw to Kondivade, then go to Kondane or Kharvandi village because the caves are close to each of these locations.

If heading from Karjat Station, autos and State Transport buses are easily accessible.

The settlement at the base of the caves may be reached in about 40 minutes.

Bhaja Caves

Arcitecture of Caves

There are four caves in the total complex. The first cave is the 65-foot-long, 28-foot-tall, and 25-foot-wide Chaitya cave, which is fashioned like an arch. To the southwest of the series of caves is the Chaitya cave. A Dagoba, a shrine with a dome form and a diameter of more than 9 feet, can be found inside the cave.  49 feet long and 14 feet wide roughly describe the nave in front of the Dagoba. Thirty columns that once ringed the nave are now in ruins, but if you look closely, you can still see where they were.

The Vihara is located to the northeast of the collection of caves. The left end of the porch is mostly intact, even if the front part is completely destroyed. The cave has fifteen pillars, a raised alcove, and a small Dagoba beneath a Chaitya arch that is around 29 feet long and more than 23 feet broad. Six cells with beds are located on either side of the Vihara hall for the monks. The left end of the exterior is mostly preserved, but the front part is completely destroyed.

Another nine cells make up the fourth cave, which now resembles a hole under the cliff. A reservoir that is currently muddied over is located beyond this cave. Under a hanging rock are two more cells and a smaller reservoir that make up the remaining ruins.

The Kondana Caves north west side is totally located deep inside the forest.  There are four caves in the total complex. The first cave  Chaitya is 65-foot-long, 28-foot-tall, and 25-foot-wide, which is formed like an arch structure. To the southwest side of Chaitya Caves   Dagoba, which is a shrine with a dome structure of a diameter more than 9 feet, can be found inside the cave. It is believed to preserve the remains of Buddhist monks. The nave in front of the Dagoba is roughly estimated to be  49 feet long and 14 feet wide.  At present there are  thirty chambers  that once surrounded the nave but now they are in ruins, but if you look closely, you can still see where they were. Trekking Through The Kondana Caves: A Break To Reconnect With Nature

November 18, 2022 : An enthusiastic t eam of Vikasietum members decided to explore the beautiful Buddhist caves near Karjat, Maharashtra. The thrill of the adventure - traversing the rocky terrain, and even wading through a small stream stemming from a waterfall - contributed to an overall satisfying experience. Our journey remains fresh in my memory, and I would love to share the fun we had with others!

The commencement of the trek was fairly easy, we made it up to the top in about half an hour. Once we got there, we admired the beautiful foliage and birds that were adorning the trees; reminiscing past treks and having conversations among ourselves. Some members were still zealous - they started walking off their excess energy and having an animated discussion about the place and its beauty.

The Kondana Buddhist Caves are around fifteen kilometers from Karjat and offer an insight into the ancient lifestyle of Buddhists. The cave displays sculptures, viharas, chaityas, and stupas. Sculptures and stupas are specimens of ancient period Buddhist architecture. There was a natural disaster in the form of an earthquake in the early 1900s, by which many stupas, front entrances, and floors of the cave were damaged. However, it has retained its beauty and peace of the olden days, attracting plenty of visitors throughout the year.

Trekking or hiking is always ranked high among the most popular and sought-after team-building activities. Being in nature is an excellent remedy for our souls as we get to spend quality time with ourselves.

Finally, we sat down to absorb the tranquility of this region. While we meditated atop this hill, we felt rejuvenated as the nearby pond graced our thoughts with its beauty. The trek concluded with our descent down the hill being met with a breathtaking sunset!

Just getting away from the fast-paced city life, spending a day breathing in the fresh air, and enjoying a day out in the lap of nature was worth it. The experience was totally unforgettable for us all. This trek was the perfect way to break free from stress and reconnect with nature. An overall refreshing and motivating experience that we look forward to again!

A trek to Kondana caves

After postponing it for 2-3 weeks due to work load, this Sunday me and my friend Sameer , finally managed to take some time out in our schedule and go on a trek to Kondana Caves . I have decided to do such type of treks at least once a month to refresh my mind. The visual library in the mind gets updated and it becomes really a good educational exercise too. I get to absorb new things, texture, colours and concepts. This helps me to keep my style fresh and also helps me break out of monotonous work environment where I stare at computer screen most of the time during work. I also get to collect rich reference photos and ideas for later use. It is really like recharging your battery.

We started at 8.30 A.M in the morning and after riding for about 54 Km we reached there at 11.00 A.M. Since this is not monsoon season, there were not many tourists. We parked our scooter at the base in an open area and started to climb up. Since I am now not used to walking large distance or climbing hills, this trek exhausted me in the beginning. It was not that hard but I noticed my stamina has decreased too much. I need more treks like this to get accustomed to this type of excursion.

kondana caves trek blog

Apart from my lack of stamina, the walk to the top was really calm and relaxing to ears as well as to the mind.

After reaching the top, I rested for a bit and then explored the caves. These caves are man made and are built by excavating rock. These are a small glimpse of Indian Rock Cut Architecture style. These were created by Buddhists and their patrons. They are called Viharas as they used to be facilities where, Buddhist monks, travelers and traders could stay while on the move.

I was astonished to see the level of precision in the designs considering these were made around 1 st century BC. The facades have details which resemble buildings made of wood. The carvings were made with exceptional detail and precision. The perfection in the symmetrical arches and design is brilliant.

The Return Trip

The return trip of this trek was equally exhilarating like the trek to the caves up the mountain. There is Ulhas river at the base of the mountain and it has small village near its banks. The calm and rustic environment was really inspiring. I had brought a sketchbook and some gouache for painting, so we sat down on a rock near the river and started to paint.

Despite being drenched in sweat from the trek and the sun not being in a mood to give us some respite, we didn’t think of anything else other than painting the scene.

Me painting the landscape

I need to do more of these treks and outdoor paintings it really teaches you so much things which you can’t learn while painting digitally. I can apply the tricks and knowledge that I picked up during these sessions to the digital painting and improve my style and make it more organic. I re-learned some of the colour schemes and mixing techniques in this session.

kondana caves trek blog

Overall this trek was really refreshing and I look forward to the next one. I need to buy good outdoor painting equipment and materials. I would love to hear stories about your treks and outdoor painting session like these.

Hidden caves behind a waterfall – Kondana Trek

Photo of Arthi

"The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek."

The weekend loomed near, two blissful days of free time away from corporate mumbo-jumbo. I had no clear plan in sight to fill up those glorious days with. A trek to Kondana caves seemed like a nice idea, given the lush carpet of green which envelops Mumbai and adjoining areas in the Monsoon. The cons of having beach bums for friends is that anything that involves climbing is met with the same scandalous reactions one might give when asked to summit Mount Everest.

Kondana caves are a bunch of Buddhist caves excavated in first century B.C. which can be reached by descending from Rajmachi village. A waterfall partly covers the cave entrance, adding to the mystic effect of long-forgotten, half ruined caves. Being a culture and history buff, I made up my mind to visit the caves for the weekend, even though I did not have company.

Left to my own devices, I looked up trekking groups that I might join as a solo woman trekker. Treksandtrails it was, a group of 20, lead by two guides. A train from VT to Karjat took me to the trek members, after which we were taken to the base village by a tum-tum, a kind of glorified auto rickshaw.

Of the two guides, one was cheerful and chirpy, mingling with the masses and being the life of the party. The other was a more reserved and shy type, the captain of the crew.

Photo of Hidden caves behind a waterfall – Kondana Trek 10/16 by Arthi

The trek itself wasn't technical, it was more of a trail than a trek. Just a handful of rocky patches and inclinations, while the rest of the trail was a basic kind of slushy walk. The trek offers magnificent views of rolling plains, babbling brooks and charming little mountains. The rains added an additional magic touch, turning everything into a moss-coloured fairytale.

At every turn, we got to experience panoramic vistas, all freshly laundered by Mother Nature. We were lucky to spot little cascades of water falling through rocky precipices. Too dainty to call a waterfall, but beautiful nonetheless. On the way up, we came across a little pond to soak our feet in and take in the surroundings at our own pace.

Photo of Hidden caves behind a waterfall – Kondana Trek 12/16 by Arthi

After frolicking around in knee-deep water, we proceeded to move ahead in our quest to reach Kondana caves. The climb was a little steep here and there, and some of the team were left behind. Good sport shoes are recommended, which will save you the trouble of a broken chappal on rocky terrain. An hour later we were in view of the beautiful Kondana cave, and I was enthralled at first glance. Kondana is as mysterious and fiesty as her google images, and up close, she certainly doesn't disappoint.

We spent some time contemplating the meaning of life under the waterfall, getting sweetly drenched in the natural shower of the wild. We then had a leisurely lunch inside the cave. As for the artefacts, the cave carvings are obscure, and there are no signs explaining them to visitors either. The inside of the cave is ancient and sanctimonious, almost taking one to times that are long past. It's easy to imagine Buddhist monks meditating in these remote caves to the beat of the waterfall cascading outside. I was grateful to have ditched the movie-dinner routine in favour of this Buddhist hangout.

Photo of Hidden caves behind a waterfall – Kondana Trek 13/16 by Arthi

The descent was even more easy, with all of us almost running down the trail, we got to base in under 30 minutes.

Photo of Hidden caves behind a waterfall – Kondana Trek 15/16 by Arthi

The next time you think of killing time in some over-loud pub drinking yourself to a stupor, give a thought to exploring natural wonders in and around your city. Not only will you be awe-struck by the beauty in store, but also humbled and grateful to have made the plunge into the wilderness.
