Whenever we travel (especially abroad), we always love finding free city tours as a means to get our bearings in a new location and to also learn more about the city/country's history.

While Pittsburgh does have periodic, free city tours run by the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation, they are often limited in frequency and location. We, as a city, simply needed more.

It wasn't until late 2018 that Pittsburgh  finally got its own free walking tour, put on by the appropriately named Free Pittsburgh Walking Tours. Naturally, I jumped on this one in early 2019 to give it a try and really enjoyed the tour overall!

Local History with Free Pittsburgh Walking Tours

Russell from Free Pittsburgh Walking Tours

The tour put on by Free Pittsburgh Walking Tours runs approximately 90 minutes and covers a breadth of Pittsburgh history- from its initial founding, rise as an industrial city, subsequent collapse, and revival as a modern, livable city we know and love today.

Along the way, you'll stop at some of downtown's most iconic buildings, where the history of the region is tied into what you see perfectly. Steel making roots by the US Steel Tower? Glass history by PPG Place? The history of Pittsburgh is truly reflected in its architecture!

William Penn Hotel and US Steel Tower

While the starting location varies from tour-to-tour and is only given out after you sign up, the guides do a great job crafting a walk around downtown that is easy, accessible, and ends relatively close to your starting point.

So if you are looking for an easy to experience and enjoyable way to learn about Pittsburgh's history, the free walking tour is a must.

The Best Part? Name Your Own Price Tip!

Narrowest Building in Pittsburgh- Can You Spot It?

With a name like Free Pittsburgh Walking Tours, you can imagine that the tours are, well, free.  This is most certainly the case; however, we always like to remind everyone that free attractions such as these often accept tips.

The guides do not make a salary for hosting the tours (Free Pittsburgh Walking Tours is not subsidized by any outside agency), so tips are the only income they receive for the experience.

Gorgeous Pittsburgh buildings

If you enjoyed your tour, we highly recommend tipping a price you feel would be acceptable!

When it comes down to it, I really enjoyed my time out with Free Pittsburgh Walking Tours, and I'm really looking forward to seeing new tours from this one pop up on the future. Whether you are a resident of the city wanting to learn more local history, or a first-time visitor, this one should definitely be on your radar.

The hosts, Dan and Diane, were passionate and knowledgeable, blending history with insights into the steel city's brewing scene. The walking pace was just right, allowing us to soak in the sights while enjoying local brews at each stop. Some of the stops even have FOOD trucks which was a solid bonus! Thanks to the hosts for a memorable time! 🍻 Read more Written April 8, 2024

We signed up for this tour so we could explore the city before the next games and we are so glad we did! From the moment we walked in to the meeting spot, Dan & Diane made us feel welcome and excited for what was ahead. The length and distance of the tour was just right for us, as we were on a schedule, but if we wanted to continue with a self-guided tour afterwards, Dan & Diane gave us plenty of suggestions of where to go and what to do. The breweries we visited were fantastic, and the beer was great. Dan & Diane really know the history of Lawrenceville and of Pittsburgh in general and hearing their own experiences of living there made it that much more interesting. Highly recommend this tour. • Q8183MCchristinah 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles An Informative Walk for Beer Lovers! Having been on several WTB tours, I was eager to join this new brew tour to get to know a different part of town. This tour doesn't start at the Walk the Burgh headquarters, but instructions for parking and meetup for the tour were a breeze, and I had no trouble finding the group at the meeting spot. Everyone in the group was super welcoming and friendly - what else do you expect of beer lovers? I'm a local, so I'd been to a few places in Lawrenceville before, but I hadn't really explored Upper Lawrenceville, where the tour starts, let alone walked along that stretch. It was great to have an excuse to get to know a few breweries in this area, as well as learn about their history AND have beer samples at each one. We didn't just learn about the breweries -- walking along that stretch of Butler Street, you pass the Allegheny Cemetery and a few other places of note, and we learned some things as we walked. We hit four breweries in all, having either a full pour, half pour, or tasting at each spot, and the guides provided snacks so that no one regretted planning for a late dinner! I'm so happy to have learned some new info about my town and to have discovered new places to grab a pint and hang out without having to walk in blindly on my own. I can't wait to get back to Upper Larryville and hit up these breweries with my friends...or just take my friends on this tour! Read more Written February 20, 2024
  • hannahbH7532BO 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Brewtiful I consider myself a local but this Lawrenceville walk hit several hidden gems of Breweries that I had not been to before! The tour guides, Dan and Diane, welcomed the group at Lolev, where the owners gave us a small tour of the brewery. As we walked along Butler, we learned a nice combination of history, culture, and arts of this neighborhood. They also gave the group Pittsburgh themed snacks with a few of the stops. At each location (Coven, Bierport, and Eleventh Hour Brewing), the tour guides were on such friendly terms with waiters and managers. This created a very casual and welcoming atmosphere. The managers or owners came over to introduce the beers and give us an insight into what we were about to sample - and there were plenty of amazing options for any type of brew you could prefer. Wear comfortable shoes, be ready to set a decent pace, and plan to spend some extra money as there are amazing restaurants to visit after the walk, and sometimes food trucks at the stops! • 51shannonm 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Met new people, learned about Lawrenceville history and delicious beer! On a warm February mid-afternoon, I joined the Lawrenceville Brewery Tour at Lolev Beer on Butler Street. It was a beautiful 60-degree day, and the tour group was already standing outside introducing themselves. Everyone was very welcoming, and the group was of surprisingly diverse ages, professions, and interests. Having lived in Pittsburgh on and off almost my whole life it was so refreshing to meet up with new people! The tour guides, Diane and Dan, were warm and inviting, ensuring that everyone was comfortable and setting expectations for the length of tour and walking distance. Lolev Beer is a newer brewery in a great location on Butler Street. One of the brewers gave us a brief tour of the equipment and discussed the historical nature of the building – an old Ford dealership – where they unearthed the original terrazzo flooring and gorgeous ceiling panels. There was a great selection of beers. I had the Vespero Czech Dark Lager and it was delicious! On our way to Coven Brewing, heading down Butler Street towards town, we stopped by Allegheny Cemetery where Diane and Dan shared interesting stories and images. Coven Brewing is an intimate brewhouse with amazing iron work on the exterior and a good view of the Allegheny Cemetery gates. I had another delicious beer, the Aerostat Oatmeal Stout. Coven had an outside vendor bringing in pierogies for the evening dinner crowd, so it was a convivial group of people. The tour group was warming up and the tour guides did a great job interspersing the modern anecdotes with historical reference. We had a nice stroll down Butler to Bierport Tap Room, a bottleshop and taproom near Row House Theatre. The space was warm and cozy in the underground bar and they prepared beer flights for us. Diane and Dan did a nice job circulating during each brewery stop bringing beer snacks, such as hard pretzels, nuts, and homemade pickles. The final stop was Eleventh Hour Brewing, a family run brewery tucked back a few streets from Butler Street. They have a great selection of craft beers, sours, and flagship brews. I loved this tour! It really motivated me to participate in other Walk the Burgh Tours. I look forward to gathering some friends for the Black & Ghost Tour and the Whiskey Walking Tour! SELF-GUIDED WALKING TOUR OF PITTSBURGH'S GOLDEN TRIANGLE (PART 1) - Pittsburgh Purple Travel Guide

Pittsburgh’s golden triangle is very walkable and many attractions are within walking distance from each other. this self-guided walking tour of pittsburgh's golden triangle covers the highlights in architecture, history and culture., the information on this webiste and much more: google maps locations, reviews and attraction websites can be found in the pittsburgh travel guide that you can preview and purchase at the backpack and snorkel travel store ., we have chosen the fountain in point state park as the starting and end point as it kind of symbolizes pittsburgh’s emergence from the "hell with the lid taken off" to a modern metropolis., since parking near point state park can be a hassle, feel free to start the tour at any point along the route that i describe below. the self-guided golden triangle walking tour is approx. 6 miles long and will take you all day as it includes several museums., there are several options to shorten it and we will let you know when this is possible so that you can either drive to some attractions or simply skip them..

Map of the Self-Guided Walking Tour of Pittsburgh's Golden Triangle

1. POINT STATE PARK FOUNTAIN

Located at the tip of pittsburgh’s “golden triangle” where the allegheny river and the monongahela river form the ohio river, point state park is a 36 acre (150,000m2) park. it commemorates and preserves the strategic and historic heritage of the area during the french and indian war (1754-1763)., formerly covered with warehouses and railroad yards, heavy traffic from the manchester bridge (over the allegheny river) and the point bridge (over the monongahela) met here. this area fell in decline after world war ii and was redeveloped into what you see today. point state park officially opened in 1974 when the construction of the iconic fountain was completed. the fountain is operated from 7:45am until 10:00pm every day from early may through the end of october. the system uses a total of 880,000 gallons of water and the pumps push the water up to 150ft in the air. this is accented by lights inside the 200ft diameter basin. the fountain is also the western terminus of the great allegheny passage, whose 350 mile trail starts in the georgetown area of washington, dc., more information about point state park can be found here ..

POINT STATE PARK FOUNTAIN

Our Pittsburgh Travel Guide has detailed information about the individual destinations, links to their locations in google maps, reviews and websites (if available). Please see the Backpack and Snorkel Travel Store for more information.

2. fort duquesne outline, walk approx. 320 ft from the fountain toward the highway overpass into the center of the grassy area and you will discover brick pavers in the ground. these pavers depict the outline of fort duquesne. duquesne is pronounced like doo-kane or /duːˈkeɪn/. this fort was established by the french in 1754 after repelling the english who had started building fort prince george in this location only two months earlier. when challenged by the english, the french were able to hold onto fort duquesne, but eventually destroyed it in 1758 when the much larger english army under general forbes marched towards it in the french and indian war..

FORT DUQUESNE OUTLINE

3. FORT PITT MUSEUM

Now walk towards the underpass under the highway but don’t go through it. when you get to the highway bridge, turn right and walk towards the fort pitt museum . fort pitt was built in 1758 by the british after razing fort duquesne where you just came from. admission to the museum is $8 per person at the time of me writing this. the museum explains the role that fort pitt played during the french and indian war, the american revolution, the whiskey rebellion and the founding of pittsburgh..

FORT PITT MUSEUM

4. FORT PITT BLOCKHOUSE

When you get out of the fort pitt museum and look left, you will see the fort pitt blockhouse which was constructed in 1764 as a redoubt of fort pitt. the fort pitt blockhouse is all that remains of fort pitt and that makes it the oldest existing structure in all of western pennsylvania..

FORT PITT BLOCKHOUSE

5. WYNDHAM GRAND PITTSBURGH DOWNTOWN

Now walk through the underpass. on the grassy areas, you will find another set of pavers which represent the outlines of former fort pitt. keep walking towards the massive building in front of you. this is the wyndham grand pittsburgh downtown., opened in 1959, this building was originally constructed as a hilton hotel. wyndham took over in 2010 after the hilton filed for chapter 11, was foreclosed, had failed inspections and hilton terminated the franchise agreement. the wyndham has 712 rooms and that makes is pittsburgh’s largest hotel. the floor-to-ceiling windows are said to provide spectacular views of point state park and the three rivers., over the years, this hotel has hosted various presidents, other notable persons and conventions. the hotel is located on the site of "king's garden", which was a vegetable garden for soldiers stationed at nearby fort pitt..

WYNDHAM GRAND PITTSBURGH DOWNTOWN

6. GATEWAY PLAZA FOUNTAIN

When you stand in front of the wyndham grand pittsburgh downtown and look towards the building, make a left and walk to the small park, called commonwealth place park, directly to the north of the hotel..

footpath that leads to the GATEWAY PLAZA FOUNTAIN

Then make a right and walk through the park and continue on until you come to the Gateway Plaza Fountain in Gateway Plaza. This plaza with the fountain is actually a large green roof from the parking structure underneath.

Gateway Plaza Fountain in Gateway Plaza

7. ONE, TWO, THREE GATEWAY CENTER

Around the fountain, you see 3 skyscrapers with polished stainless steel facades. to the north is one gateway center, to the south east is two gateway center and three gateway center is to the south west. the buildings were completed in 1952 and use water from the allegheny river instead of traditional cooling towers. the water that is returned to the river is purified and cleaner than the incoming water., more information about gateway center can be found here ..

GATEWAY CENTER

8. GATEWAY STATION

Gateway station is one of four “t” stations in downtown pittsburgh. the "t" is pittsburgh’s light rail which operates underground as a subway in downtown and above ground south of the golden triangle. the unique glass-and-steel structure station was described as "inventive, daring, and decisively world-class" when it was built. if you have time, go down into the station to see "pittsburgh recollections", a 60ft x 30ft ceramic-tile mural, behind the train tracks. no ticket is needed to enter gateway station and see the mural..

GATEWAY STATION

9. FIFTH AVENUE PLACE

East of gateway station stands the skyscraper of fifth avenue place, a distinct looking building that reminds me of a square pink multi-stage rocket. the building was completed in 1988. it is 616ft (188m) tall and constructed of a granite frame for the first 450ft (140m), which then turns into a pyramidal roof which is another the 124ft (38m) tall., protruding from the pyramidal roof is a 178ft (54m) mast which represents the height that the building was originally designed for. the city, however, decided that a building this tall would not look well in the existing skyline and restricted the height. the mast is hollow and has 12 sides, which makes it look round. the 4ft wide interior has a ladder which allows access to the aircraft warning light on top of the mast., the pink color of the facade comes from spanish pink granite that was mined in porrino, spain. the darker colored taivassalo granite that you can see at the building's entryways and windows was imported from finland. the blue-green colored glass was manufactured by ppg and is supposed to look like old-fashioned soda glass bottles. in the evening, the pyramidal rooftop and office tower walls are illuminated with 64 color changing flood lights that consume more than 44,000 watts of power., the building has a food court and retail shops, so if you are hungry or in the mood to shop here: enjoy.

FIFTH AVENUE PLACE

10. FOUR GATEWAY CENTER

When you get out of the building, turn left and walk towards the mcdonalds across liberty ave and then cross forbes ave to the south and stanwix st to the west. this is a busy part of downtown with lots of car and bus traffic, so please be careful., once you cross stanwix st you stand in front of four gateway center. unlike the other gateway center buildings, four gateway center has a curtainwall façade made of locally produced aluminum and glass. the building was built in 1960, is 305ft (93m) tall and has 22 floors..

Scottie Scheffler wins 2024 Masters Tournament for 2nd win in 3 years

By Emily Mae Czachor

Updated on: April 14, 2024 / 10:00 PM EDT / CBS News

Scottie Scheffler secured his second Masters Tournament  victory in three years on Sunday, finishing 11 under and four strokes up on his closest competitors.

The 27-year-old American was tied with Ludvig Aberg, Max Homa and Collin Morikawa coming into the eighth hole before the world no. 1 hit three straight birdies to take the lead for good. Aberg ended up placing second in his debut at the Masters.

Scheffler has been ranked No. 1 in the world for more than two years now and also won the 2022 Masters tournament, which was his first major championship win.

The Masters - Final Round

The tournament was marked by unruly weather and at least one history-making moment. Golf icon and returning Masters champion Tiger Woods opened the tournament's last leg with his 100th round at the major.

The Masters Tournament is an invitational event held yearly at the Augusta National Golf Club, a private golf course in Augusta, Georgia. Since its establishment in 1934, the tournament has grown to become one of the four most important championships in men's professional golf. The tournament typically takes place during the first week of April, so they are the first major event of every season, followed by the PGA Championships, the U.S. Open and the Open Championship, which are usually held in May, June and July, respectively.

Scheffler and Morikawa held first and second on the 2024 Masters leaderboard , in that order, heading into the fourth round, on Sunday. They teed off in the afternoon as the last pairing of the day. Xander Schauffele and Bryson DeChambeau also began their play in a featured afternoon slot, with DeChambeau in fifth place on the leaderboard and Schauffele in sixth at the start of the round.

Spanish golfer Jon Rahm , the 29-year-old who won the Masters tournament last year, returned to the course Sunday to defend his title, although his performances during the preceding rounds this weekend meant he was no longer competing to win. Woods had fallen out of contention, too, by the tournament's last day. After making his 24th consecutive cut on Friday, which was a new record at the championship, the star golfer went on to shoot a personal worst during the next and third round. At 48, Woods is a decorated golfing champion with five previous wins at the Masters. He teed off Sunday morning with the 23-year-old amateur Neal Shipley, commencing his 100th Masters round.

Masters Golf

Scheffler will receive a huge cash prize in addition to the traditional green jacket, which is given to the Masters winner each year. The overall purse for the 2024 Masters is $20 million, setting a new record-high and jumping $2 million from last year's prize fund.

The champion this year will receive $3.6 million from the purse, which is also a new record and up from the $3.2 million payout that Rahm received for his Masters win in 2023. What remained of the total $18 million purse in that case was divided among 50 golfers who participated in the tournament, with their individual scores determining how much prize money they were eventually awarded.
