cambodia siem reap tours

It was a whirlwind across a number of cities, but a very comprehensive experience across the many sides and cultures of China. Most days had sufficient activities, but weren’t overwhelming, which was great.Across cities, we had excellent tour guides, like Kitty (Beijing), Jenny (Xian), William (Guilin/Yangshuo), Kris (Shanghai), and Tony (Yellow Mountains.)

cambodia siem reap tours

From the time we landed in Beijing until we left, we were well taken care of. My wife and I had Lily Liu as our guide and she was amazing. From arranging visits to all the different sights, to teaching us the history, it was fantastic.

The tour was excellent. Selinda was very knowledgeable about all the aspects of our tour. Selinda was very interesting and knew so much Chinese history

We made a private tour through South China in January 2024. Altogether Chengdu was the highlight. We had an incredible day at Emeishan. In Chengdu our guidewas Helen. She was the diamond of all. Speaking fluently English, full of interesting stories, laughing and talking all the time. We missed her the rest of our tour. We highly recommend to go to Chengdu for 3 days when visiting China, especially with Helen.

Other highlights are too many to mention but here are a few Ken taking us to the Terracotta Warriors and our food tour in Xian was amazing,

Our day volunteering at the Panda Base was truly unforgettable. Helen, our guide, provided us with invaluable insights about Chengdu and the pandas, enriching our tour with her knowledge and expertise. We're grateful to Helen for accompanying us throughout the day and showcasing the highlights of China.

We had a booking with China Highlights through Silvia Ye who guarenteed a perfect organisation. In Chengdu our guide was Helen. She was the diamond of all. Speaking fluently English, full of interesting stories, laughing and talking all the time. We missed her the rest of our tour. We highly recommend to go to Chengdu for 3 days when visiting China, especially with Helen.

We traveled to China during the Chinese new year and we had Kris as our guide and he is simply knowledgeable, helpful and great.

We visited Guilin for 2 days and stayed in the Guilin Waterfall hotel. Guilin was absolutely beautiful! Our guide, William, was very knowledgeable and kind! He taught us so much about Guilin and the surrounding area! We really enjoyed trying the specialty rice noodles of Guilin. Our highlight was the Li river cruise.

Amazing tour and the guide Mr. 贺霄 was very accommodating with our needs and request as we have bought our 2 years old with us. Well explained for all the place we visited. Any additional cost were informed well ahead and didn't felt any pressure if we opt not to go for additional detour. The trip was relaxing/ laid back/no rushing with zero shopping!

Beng Mealea temple was hidden in a maze of jungle for hundreds of years and recently found and opened for visitors. Climb over large sandstone blocks to reach the inner sanctuary and eerie worship corridor is an exploration to remember. Architecturally, Beng Mealea is noted for its innovative, in its time, construction of hallways, it was a very large temple with wide galleries foreshadowing Angkor Wat. Garudas, hold up an outer platform, finer in detail than those to be found out in the elements of the Elephant Terrace at Angkor Thom. Surprises of fallen lintels with intricate carvings lay amongst the fallen wall and roofs. Continue over an hour drive, you will get to Koh Ker, a 10th century capital abandoned in the remote north of Cambodia for more than a thousand years. i did the bike/hike/kayak 6 day tour with Siem Reaper and it was honestly the best decision i could have made. My tour guide for the trip was Mr Chen (definitely recommend!) and he made sure everything over the 6 days went smoothly. He was always on time, very attentive, and made sure we were always well looked after and cared for. He's a great bloke, super funny, lovely to chat to, and the 6 days flew by too quickly. I felt like i got to see all the best parts of siem reap and i would 100% do it again. Fantastic planning + organising by the team at Siem Reap and big thank you to Mr Chen and my driver Mr Visal for making my time in Cambodia unforgettable!

Angkor Sightseeing Package Tour for Family with Ancient Temples

Brilliant trip! We have just returned from a 5-day tour package taking you from Siem Reap and end in Tonle Sap Lake organised by DNQ Travel, and can only echo what previous reviewers have said. It was probably the best-organised trip we have ever made, despite there being so any elements to the holiday where things could have so easily gone wrong, but everything went like clockwork. You got a wonderful overview of Cambodia in such a short time and the hotels were excellent. All in all, a great holiday, and we would have no hesitation in recommending DNQTravel.

Reviews of Cambodia Tours from Siem Reap

This was a fantastic tour. It was well organised thoughout every stage. We saw all the major sights in the towns. The tour guides Sim, Sam and Janine were highly knowlegable, caring and friendly and could answer any question. The drivers were excellent and very prompt. We were met at each bus depot, airport and hotel. I highly recommend this tour.
The tour itinerary was great, exactly what I was looking for in the time that I had. all tour guides and drivers were great - prompt, knowledgeable and happy to field all sorts of questions and adjust the timing or itinerary where possible as it was just me. There was also the right amount of free time to explore independently. This trip was a dream come true! I did not realise also that I would be the only person on the tour - had I known, I would not have chosen to pay the additional single supplement for hotels, as this was totally unnecessary - and really expensive! The Mekong Express bus to Siem Reap (6 hours) was uncomfortably hot - there was air conditioning but once the bus was moving it could not be felt at all. Overall, it was an incredible trip for a solo traveler and highly recommended to anyone who likes the same sort of cultural activities.

The Ultimate Siem Reap Adventure Tour | Temples – Trees and Floating Villages [with Ta Prohm Temple – Angkor Wat Temple – Bakong Temples and Siem Reap Floating Village]

My Life Changing Journey into the Real Heart of Cambodia

The first rays of sunlight filtered through the open window, stirring me from my deep slumber. As I blinked awake in the hand-carved four-poster bed, the memories of the previous day came flooding back. The ox cart ride through endless green rice paddies… The kindness and smiles of the village children… The serenity of the monastery tucked away in the jungle. After 3 days exploring the rural villages and landscapes surrounding Siem Reap, I realized I had discovered the real heart and soul of Cambodia.

When planning my trip to Cambodia, I, like most first-time visitors, focused on the magnificent temples of Angkor Wat. But a friend who had lived in Siem Reap convinced me to take a countryside tour. This would allow me to meet local people, see traditional ways of life, and understand the culture on a deeper level. I couldn’t have imagined how rewarding this decision would be!

My tour guide Met, a lifelong Siem Reap local, picked me up right on time from my boutique hotel in a private air-conditioned vehicle. Having a personal guide allowed us to tailor the experience exactly to my interests. Over the next few days Met led me to hidden corners of villages and junglescapes I could have never found on my own.

One memorable moment was learning to weave silk scarves from a grandmother who’s been perfecting the craft her whole life. As my scarf took shape, we bonded over herbal tea and laughter despite the language barrier.

Another highlight was exploring the ancient ruins of a 12th century temple engulfed in vines and tree roots deep in the forest. Without the crowds jostling around, I could truly absorb the mystical atmosphere. The solitude and connection to nature was magical.

By the end of my countryside adventure, I felt like I’d made lifelong local friends. I gained insight into Khmer beliefs, sampled delicious homecooked meals, and created memories to cherish. It was a privilege to experience authentic rural life first-hand.

So if you’re traveling to Siem Reap and want to get beyond the surface, I highly recommend escaping the crowds and journeying into the villages. Let the incredible people and landscapes of the countryside reveal the true heart of Cambodia. Just beware – you may find a piece of yourself stays behind!

7 Best Siem Reap Food Tours in 2024

Siem Reap gets more tourists than anywhere else in Cambodia, and for good reason- it’s home to the famous complex of Angor Temples. When you visit this town, don’t miss out on all the amazing Khmer food here! A Siem Reap food tour will introduce you to both the food and the culture, all in one delicious evening.

We spent a month in Cambodia with our kids who were 6 and 8. We loved learning more about Khmer culture, and can’t wait to return. Siem Reap was actually our last stop in Cambodia, so we had already been exposed to many Khmer dishes, but we still learned a lot from our food tour in Siem Reap.

Food tours are a wonderful and safe way to expose you to all types of tastes and goodies you might not find (or be brave enough to try) on your own. In this post, we’ll cover the best food tours in Siem Reap, what to expect from a food tour in Siem Reap, as well as some traditional Khmer food to look for during your visit.

As a bonus, if you love Khmer food, we’ve included a cooking class where to can learn to cook it yourself!

Cambodia is a small country that borders Thailand to the west, Laos to the north, and Vietnam to the east. You will find similarities to both Thai and Vietnamese food, but you will also find tastes and flavors that are unique to Cambodia. Taking a food tour in Siem Reap is a great way to begin your exploration of the country.

Our questions often range from “What was happening downtown today?” to “Is this a typical breakfast dish?” to “What is the meat in this dish?” With our kids, the question is often, “Is this spicy?”

-Cambodian food is not as well known as its famous neighbors- Thailand and Vietnam. Many travelers are not aware of the differences and similarities between the cuisines. Don’t miss your chance to explore delicious Khmer food!

-We recommend booking your Siem Reap food tour for the beginning of your visit so that you can look for more of your favorite foods during the rest of your time in Cambodia, and confidently order yourself from street vendors.

1. Top Pick: Sunset Siem Reap Food Tour by Tuk Tuk

🌟 Rating: 5 Stars   ⏳ 4 Hours   ✅ Small Group, Includes Village Home   🔎 Check Rates

This is the best, small group, full-length tour. You’ll get away from the city center, to eat at places you would never visit on your own.

This is not a private tour but has a maximum of 12 guests. We actually prefer small group tours over private tours, as it gives us a chance to chat with other travelers, and often pick up travel tips from them. Plus, as a full-time traveling family, we spend a lot of time with each other, so sometimes hanging out with other people is a treat!

“ We started with some traditional food stops in the city, but then headed out to the villages to see and eat what the people of Cambodia eat. Taking a meal in a locals home was the highlight and our hosts were so gracious and kind.” -John_P ( Read more reviews )

This tour has four sit-down stops, including homemade pickles, BBQ, and curries. You’ll get to try regional specialties that go beyond the Khmer standards like beef Loklak, and fish Amok (though we find those dishes delicious too). Unlimited drinks are included. This is a four-hour tour, so come hungry!

2. Ultimate Evening Siem Reap Food Tour

🌟 Rating: 5 Stars   ⏳ 2 1/2 Hours   ✅ Private Tour, 10 Tastings   🔎 Check Rates

We chose this tour as a family because of its shorter length. We had just done a wonderful 4-hour food tour in Phnom Penh and felt that another long tour (that kept the kids up late) was more than we wanted. We were really happy with our choice, and highly recommend this tour!

This tour had three stops after we were picked up by our guide, Mr Nak in a tuk-tuk. Of course, the stops may vary, but this was our experience, to give you an idea of what to expect from this food tour.

The first stop was for BBQ satay. We had our choice of beef or beef liver, served with pickles and a green papaya slaw, with a side of buttered, toasted baguette. Delicious! (Though since we don’t usually eat a lot of meat, we declined the liver option).

Our second stop was for chive cakes (Nhum Kuchai)- which are big, thick, and full of chives. This was served with pumpkin juice, which the kids absolutely loved.

The third stop was at the 60 Road Market, which is close to where the Angkor tickets are sold. Here we had the opportunity to try the famous Khmer bug snacks (we declined). We walked a bit through the market before settling at a stall our guide had selected which did not serve pork (at our request).

Here we tried all sorts of dishes, from taro spring rolls to fish wrapped in banana leaves, to rice balls (the kids love these). We were able to point to interesting things on the grill and try them. We also had Nhum Banchouk, a Cambodian curry soup with noodles.

One of the highlights for us was watching our guide eat a Balut, a fertilized duck egg. This is a delicacy in Cambodia, one that we weren’t up for trying ourselves! The eggs are cooked at 20 days gestation (of 28 days), so the embryo has no bones or feathers, but has a discernable shape. Mr Nuk was such a good sport to demonstrate for us how to eat this, and what it looked like inside.

We finished the evening with a stop at a dessert stand, where we had sticky rice with sesame and coconut, and some egg yolk sweets. Overall we had a wonderful experience- our guide was so easy to talk with and was great with the kids. We never felt any pressure to try something that didn’t appeal to us. We were able to ask lots of questions and try some Khmer food we hadn’t tasted yet.

“ The range of food tastings and quantities were perfect, I left the tour with a full stomach and great memories. I highly recommend this tour! “ Venture68199 ( Read more reviews )

This is a private tour, so you can personalize it as you like, just let them know ahead of time what your wishes or restrictions are- this is especially helpful if you have dietary restrictions or just picky kids. We loved this tour, it was just the right length after a long day of touring around Siem Reap.

Tips for Enjoying Siem Reap Food Tours

Knowing what to expect from an experience makes all the difference, so here are our best tips for enjoying your Siem Reap food tour, including what to expect and what to avoid when booking a Khmer food tour.

-Many Siem Reap food tours take place in the evening, to avoid the heat of the day. These evening food tours can go late into the night and can be a fun way to socialize with other travelers. We’ve also included a few tours that include markets in the early morning before the heat sets in.

-The better tours will take you to places you probably wouldn’t find on your own, and answer all your questions about Cambodia and Khmer culture. They can adapt the tour to your interests and diet.

-Cambodian food is rather meat and seafood-heavy. Tour guides will try to accommodate vegetarians and others as best they can. This is best described as a “temple diet” to Cambodians, rather than as simply “no meat”.

Our tour guide was able to choose a street stall that didn’t use pork to accommodate us, which we appreciated. Make sure to let your tour guide know ahead of time of any preferences or restrictions.

-Cambodian food is generally not spicy (compared to Thai or even Vietnamese). The spice is usually provided on the side, and you add as much as you would like. This makes it really easy for kids to try new dishes without being afraid of the spice level.

-Cambodians routinely eat bugs as snacks, as well as other items that most Westerners are not used to eating. Many Siem Reap food tours will include the chance for you to try some of these items, but there is no pressure to eat them, and you won’t be missing a large part of the experience if you choose not to.

-Some tours incorporate or end at large tourist centers. Many Siem Reap food tours include the Made in Cambodia Market, which we highly recommend visiting (it’s one of the best things to do in Siem Reap ), but it’s not necessary to visit with a guide. The same goes for Long’s Bar- worth a visit on your own, but you don’t need to be guided there.

-Most Siem Reap food tours use either tuk tuks or vespas to move between restaurants and street food stalls, so there is not a lot of walking involved. That makes these tours a great way for all ages and abilities to participate. We love using tuk tuks for tours, we’ve also used them in Phnom Penh and even Lisbon !

-We took our kids (ages 6 and 8) on a Siem Reap food tour and highly recommend them to families! Often our kids didn’t eat a whole portion of most of the foods, but tasted things and learned a lot. Many tours include unlimited beer and water, as well as non-alcoholic options like sugar cane juice.

What Are Some Traditional Khmer Foods?

Here are some traditional Khmer foods that you may encounter on your Siem Reap food tour:

Fish Amok is the national dish of Cambodia. It is fish that has been steamed in banana leaves until it has a custardy consistency, then mixed with curry that has flavors of lemongrass, kaffir, galangal, and garlic. It does not have a “fishy” taste. You can also find delicious vegetarian versions, though these are less traditional.

Beef Lok Lak

This is essentially the Cambodian equivalent of beef tips. Tender pieces of beef are stir-fried with tomatoes, onions, and spices, then served with rice and often a fried egg.

Num Banh Chao

This is a crispy yellow pancake that is wide and thin, which is then folded over ground pork and shrimp into a half-moon shape. You eat it by tearing off pieces of the pancake with your hands and adding fresh herbs and vegetables. The pancake is made from rice flour and coconut milk.

Num Banh Chok

These are sometimes called “Khmer Noodles”, you will be served a bowl of cold noodles with a yellowish powdered fish curry on top. The curry is made from fish, lemongrass, kaffir lime, and turmeric. You stir in the curry and then add fresh herbs and greens to taste.

This is fish that is mashed up and then grilled in a banana leaf. You then open up the banana leaves to eat the small square of fish that is inside.

Fried Crickets, Grasshoppers and Tarantulas

You’ll often see fried bugs in Cambodian markets, and even at rest stops when on a long bus journey. The bugs are dipped in a batter and fried. Cambodians see this as an easy, satisfying snack.

Bugs are also sometimes added to main dishes. In Phnom Pehn we had a beef dish that included stir-fried red tree ants, called Ongkrong Saek Koo. The ants are supposed to add a taste similar to lime, they were a bit crunchy!

FAQ: Siem Reap Food Tours

Yes, the street food in Siem Reap is safe to eat. A guided tour ensures that you are eating at clean stalls, which have a good reputation. If you are eating on your own, look for food stalls that have a line, so you know that the food is fresh and has not been sitting out.

No, Cambodian food is not spicy. Spice is always provided so that you add as much spice as you like, but it is not part of the initial dish.

Cambodian food shares some similarities to Thai food, and to Vietnamese food, but has its own specialties, regional flavors, and unique dishes. Cambodians use a lot of fish in their dishes, as well as a lot of rice.

Cambodian food is not inherently spicy, though they do use a lot of curry paste. Cambodian food uses a lot of lemon grass, kaffir, and garlic. They use a lot of fish, sometimes ground up, sometimes in chunks or whole. Rice is served in a lot of dishes including rice porridge for breakfast. Keep your eye out for locally grown cashews as well!

Fish Amok is the national dish of Cambodia, though most locals only eat it for special occasions. Fish Amok is made with fish, curry, and coconut milk, and is served with rice.

Cambodia jeep.

We have always been passionate about vintage jeeps and love to keep the icon from the Vietnam and Cambodia war alive. They also provide the perfect way to explore the roads less traveled. The Jeep MUTT 151 A2 was an indispensable vehicle during its army days for exactly this reason, but after the war, few were still used and many just began rusting away. With a lot of love and patience Cambodiajeep.com have restored some of these jeeps and they are now indispensable vehicles for amazing adventure tours in Cambodia and Vietnam. Cambodia Jeep is always searching for new routes and excitement and in recent years we have expanded our tours both in Cambodia.

Our home base is in the beautiful colonial temple town of Siem Reap. From here we organise many exclusive day tours with our vintage jeeps. Just outside the city is the world’s largest temple complex, and UNESCO world heritage site, Angkor Wat. Naturally, we can provide memorable day tours to the most famous temples like Angkor, Bayon and Ta Prohm, but we also specialise in tours that go off the beaten track to small unknown temples, where we can show you magical places many others do not get to see. Phnom kulen, Cambodia’s most important holy mountain is also within driving distance of Siem Reap, driving through some beautiful, natural scenery to get there. When you arrive you will visit one of Cambodia’s largest waterfalls as well as climbing up to see the sleeping buddha and strolling through the trees to take in the river with the 1,000 lingas.

Furthermore, we are the pioneers of self-driving jeep tours through Cambodia. For the past 20 years, we have been touring across the country to discover new roads and destinations to include in the programme. As the jeep can take you to places where no buses with tourists can go, we strive to find the experiences you will never forget and truly get to know Cambodia at its best. These self drive tours can be done individually but also with a group of friends. They are also ideal for incentive tours for companies. Whether you just want a day tour, or a full 14 day itinerary to discover all of this beautiful country, we are there for you.

Just fantastic jeep tour through the jungle

Super fun and awesome car from 1949, perfectly made for off road trips through the jungle. Great tour guide who adjusts to the speed of your convenience and knows literally every stone. Kind, knowledgeable yet discreet. Perfect time spent. Ride through the jungle to a completely private and lost Ruins without any people free to explore like you just found this temple yourself.

An excellent personalized jeep tour

An excellent personalized jeep tour of the Angkor Wat, Angkor Thum & the countryside. Mr Hang was an excellent and informative driver who ensured I was well looked after. The personalized jeep adventure felt like you see more of the temples than what the average tourist would experience.

My 8 Favorite Experiences In Beautiful Siem Reap, Cambodia

S iem Reap is the gateway to the fascinating UNESCO-listed Angkor Archaeological Park and attracts travelers seeking to learn about the ancient Khmer Kingdom — which ruled from the 9th to 15th centuries. Many people are also now visiting Cambodia to experience the spirit and resilience of this free-from-conflict and developing country.

As you wander the bustling streets of downtown Siem Reap, you’ll be swept up in the colorful chaos of tuk-tuks, street vendors, and bustling markets. But beyond this, Siem Reap offers an incredible array of experiences — from indulging in delicious Cambodian cuisine, exploring traditional Khmer villages, participating in Buddhist rituals with saffron-robed monks, or delving into the burgeoning art scene.

Let me introduce you to my favorite experiences from a recent trip to Siem Reap, Cambodia.

1. Angkor Archaeological Park

The Angkor Archaeological Park contains the magnificent remains of the Khmer Empire’s different capitals, stretching over 155 square miles. Star attractions include Angkor Wat, the world’s largest religious site; Bayon, renowned for its massive stone faces; Ta Prohm, with trees growing through the ruins; and Banteay Srei.

You can visit the park independently, by tuk-tuk, bicycle, or motorbike. The best option is to engage a park-accredited guide to understand the stories behind the structures, sculptures, and history.

Being a fan of small group touring, I found Vespa Adventures offered me the sense of freedom I was after. Then there is the fun of being piloted around the park on a gloriously maintained Vespa by an experienced bike rider. We traveled on quiet laneways and through forest paths, giving us a sense that we were the only visitors. We also arrived at less-crowded temple entrances and other sites. Our guide shared Angkorian stories at each stop.

Vespa Adventures offers full and half-day tours of Angkor Park, plus countryside tours and even an evening food tour. These have to be the best fun for people wanting a sense of independence and adventure while benefiting from a guided small group tour.

Pro Tip: Angkor park passes (personalized photo ID tickets) are only available from the official park ticket office . Single-day, 3-day, and 7-day passes are available, but one day is never enough. A 3-day pass, valid for 7 days, allows you to intersperse your park visits with other Siem Reap activities.

2. Grasshopper Adventures

What better way to see the countryside and gain glimpses of local people’s daily lives than by cycling? Grasshopper Adventures’ guided half and full-day tours around Siem Reap and the Angkor temples offer a selection of itineraries. And for us 60-something-year-old travelers, their E-bike Ultimate Countryside Tour sounded perfect.

Our guide, Bunvath, familiarized us with the e-bikes and gave us a safety brief — ready for the 7:30 a.m. start to beat the heat. We traveled on almost traffic-free back streets, and once in the country, it was down village lanes, between rice fields, and skirting through local farms.

The half-day tour had many breaks, including a temple with some friendly novice monks, a local fresh food market, and a scenic reservoir for a traditional late-morning snack. Plus, we visited two local villages to see people making rice noodles in one and sticky rice snacks in another. These were not “shows” put on for us, just life happening as it always does.

Pro Tip: Though Grasshopper Adventures offers regular bikes, an e-bike is recommended unless you are a seasoned bicycle rider. We traveled over relatively flat terrain; the e-bike made the 35 miles much more manageable, allowing us to take in the scenery and enjoy more of the experience.

3. Kulen Elephant Forest

Kulen Elephant Forest is 1,100 acres of protected forest an hour from Siem Reap. It is now home to the elephants that, until a few years ago, provided tourists with rides around the Angkor temples — a practice that has since ceased. Now retired, these elephants enjoy a long-awaited and well-deserved saddle- and chain-free life, rediscovering relationships within the herd while receiving the best care.

Visitors can do a morning or afternoon tour and learn about elephant conservation. In a hands-on approach, you’ll make snacks to feed the elephants and then wander with these giants as they graze and play. With only 75 captive elephants remaining in Cambodia, the leaders at Kulen Elephant Park aim to inspire other elephant owners across Cambodia to look more toward the conservation model as a natural alternative. The tour price contributes to this noble cause and is a tourism model I gladly support.

4. Phare Circus

Phare , the Cambodian Circus, is a cross between a highly energetic and engaging theater in the round on a smaller scale, though equally enthralling as Cirque du Soleil. Opening in 2013 to create meaningful employment opportunities for Cambodian artists, it continues to provide highly entertaining nightly shows under a 330-person big top.

The back story makes this venture even more compelling. Nine young Cambodian men in a refugee camp during the Khmer Rouge time found the provided drawing classes to be a powerful form of healing. Returning to their home district of Battambang in 1994, they began offering free drawing classes to street children.

They then opened a school named Phare Ponleu Selpak , which translates to “The Brightness of the Art.” Today, more than 1,200 pupils attend this open school, from entry-level to year 12. Additionally, some 500 students participate in vocational programs with professional visual arts, theater, music, dance, and circus training. All of this education is free to students, with much of the funding coming from Phare’s daily performances.

Phare’s spellbinding circus performance would attract adoring crowds at any international venue. Knowing that your ticket price does so much more than just keep these artists in work makes it a double “must-do”’ when visiting Siem Reap.

Pro Tip: Go early, enjoy street food and pre-show entertainment in the leafy courtyard, and browse the quality boutique and gift shop. Once again, all profits go back to the schools.

5. Cuisine Wat Damnak

A native of Lyon, France, Chef Joannès Riviere first came to Cambodia as a volunteer cooking instructor in 2003. While at the Siem Reap Hotel School, Johannes created a “Cambodian Cooking” cookbook. The goal? Record and preserve recipes and the culinary knowledge of a country that had seen much of its past wiped out by the Khmer Rouge. Joannès then spent several years as executive chef at the city’s famed Hotel de la Paix before opening Cuisine Wat Damnak in 2013.

The setting is a transformed traditional teak timber house in a sculptured garden in the trending Wat Bo village within Siem Reap. With a dedication to farm-to-table and seasonality, Joannès and his business partner, Nguon Venchhay (Chai), offer a regularly changing six- to eight-course tasting menu showcasing the best of Cambodian cuisine, along with a plant-based tasting menu. The outcome is a decidedly delicious tour of Cambodian produce and culinary style served in a refined manner and well worth an evening of your time.

Pro Tip: If you are also visiting Cambodia’s capital city — Phnom Penh — book a table at the gloriously renovated villa that is Cuisine Wat Damnak, Phnom Penh .

6. Siem Reap Arts Tours

Robina Hanley, a 15-year resident of Temple Town, operates Siem Reap Arts Tours . Her behind-the-scenes tours not only take you to the exhibitions, galleries, workshops, ateliers, and boutiques of the surprising cadre of resident local and international artists, but she can also often introduce you to the artists themselves.

Examples of just two artists we met on this tour were Cambodian Master Artist Lim Muy Theam from Theam’s Gallery. His family became refugees in France due to the Khmer Rouge regime. Gaining fine arts and design qualifications, Theam returned to Cambodia in 1997 and has led initiatives reviving the arts and craft sector.

And the other artist we met in his new Siem Reap gallery, Belgium-born and now Cambodian-based Christian Develter exhibits his large, bright, and compelling pieces — like his Chin series depicting the intricately tattooed faces of Burmese tribal women.

Pro Tip: Robina curates tours for your particular interests. Be prepared to be wowed and impressively surprised at the creative arts and fashion scene in Siem Reap .

7. Sokkhak Riverside Spa

After hours of tramping around the ancient Angkor temples or Siem Reap’s bustling streets, your body will need a reward. Of the many massage studios and spas available, Sokkhak Riverside Spa stands out. Sokkhak means “tranquil” in Khmer and seems appropriate given the spa’s restful riverside location and invitingly spacious and luxurious ambiance.

Sokkhak Spa offers a broad range of spa and beauty treatments, facials, romantic packages, and massages, including their signature Khmer Traditional Massage —said to pre-date the famous Thai massage. Being a lover of Thai massages, I had to try the Khmer signature, and at the usual 90-minute finishing mark, I did not want it to stop. Bookings for Sokkhak Riverside Spa are recommended, and you may thank yourself (and me) once you visit.

8. Angkor Zipline

Ziplining has long been on our bucket list. The opportunity to soar through Angkor Archaeological Park’s treetops resolved our dilemma. Being apprehensive first-timers, the Angkor Zipline team impressed us with their dedication to safety and the comfort of their riders.

There are two tour options: “Gold” offers the most flies between the trees, plus the highest and longest runs; “Silver” misses out on the longest runs but has the bonus of abseiling down from the last platform for one final adrenaline hit. Part of the adventure is climbing narrow stairs and crossing sky bridges to reach various platforms. However, you are constantly clipped onto safety cables with the undivided attention of the safety rangers. At over 700 feet above the ground, the views are well worth it.

Our rangers mentioned that an 82-year-old lady had recently completed the course, dashing the thought we may have been the oldest.

Pro Tip: Angkor Zipline now offers a mountain bike tour to combine with ziplining. This way, you explore the tree tops and forest floor in a half-day tour.
