Start the day with 4th generation recipe Cinnamon Rolls from Mom Coon and fresh fruits while it's tough to beat.

Molokini crater is an iconic moon-shaped islet with crystal clear water off of Maui’s Southern coast. This crater is home to over 250 species of fish, coral reefs, and other marine wildlife, including manta rays, and monk seals.

Sail on to the second snorkeling destination of the day! Often to Turtle Town. *Please note that the exact location can be dependent on the weather.

Enjoy our savory teriyaki grilled chicken, a crunchy tossed green salad with Mom Coon’s famous dressing, Garlic Furikake Rice and soft Hawaiian sweet rolls.

After your BBQ chicken lunch, we’ll make our way back to Ma’alaea Harbor. For guests 21+, two premium beverages are probided, as well as sodas, juice, and filtered water.

Parking information

• Parking within Ma’alaea Harbor is $1 per hour; we recommend paying for 6 hours total. This parking lot uses a QR code payment system. Arrive early to pay via the QR code (you will need to know your license plate number). Trilogy does not own this parking lot. Please be aware of where you are parking and follow the parking instructions found on the parking signs. Trilogy is not responsible for cars that get towed.

How far in advance should I book this activity?

Yes, a briefing is provided before you enter the water and your friendly crew will assist you with snorkel gear and further instruction.

Is this activity suitable for children?

What kind of boat will be used?

Depending on the crowd, you will be sailing on any one of the following boats. TRILOGY II: 64' Cutter Rigged Sailing Catamaran licensed for 84 passengers, average number of guests is 54 passengers. TRILOGY V: 55' Searunner/Sloop Rigged Catamaran licensed for 67 passengers, average number of guests is 42 passengers.

Will we see whales?

Every year Humpback Whales migrate to the warm waters of Hawaii, and although not guaranteed, they are often seen between the months of December and April.

Take Hwy 30 (Honoapi’ilani Hwy) and keep going straight until you reach the main intersection for the Maui Ocean Center. Turn left at the lights and pull into the harbor.

Head south on Hwy 30 (Honoapi’ilani Hwy), and as the road opens up after the tunnel, you will see a sign for Maalaea Harbor, followed by Buzz’s Wharf. Turn right at the Maalaea Harbor Sign. If you pass the Maui Ocean Center on your right then you’ve gone too far!

Head north on the Pi’ilani Hwy (Hwy 31), or S. Kihei Rd and follow the signs that take you to Hwy 31. Eventually, that road will end in a T-intersection. Get in the left turn lane to follow the signs pointing to Lahaina. Turn left and get onto Hwy 30 (Honoapi’ilani Hwy). After a few minutes you will see the main intersection for the Maui Ocean Center on your left. Turn left at the lights and pull into the harbor.

It’s very likely that we’ll see turtles, however, it’s not a guarantee being that they are wildlife. But we’ll take you out to a location that they’re often seen at. Please note: Turtle sightings are common at Turtle Town, but there are no turtles at Molokini.

Is this just a SNUBA trip?

This is a Molokini Snorkel Adventure that offers our guests the opportunity to also do SNUBA all on one trip.

Do you allow full-face snorkel masks on your trips?

We do not allow full-face snorkel masks. For more information, please read our snorkeling safety tips regarding snorkel masks .

What happens if we can’t make it to Molokini Crater?

If we can’t make it to Molokini Crater our captain will always make sure to get you folks out to another beautiful snorkel destination . Safety is always our number one priority and we want you to be safe and comfortable in the water at all times.

It’s about 70ft at Molokini Crater and 30ft at Turtle Town.

The water temperature stays around 70 degrees year round but if you find that to be too cold for you, we do have wetsuits available on board for you to rent for $10 (cash).

How far out is it?

Molokini is about 9 miles offshore (1 hr boat ride). There is about an hour boat ride to the other destinations too. Olowalu may take a little longer.

Will we see whales?

While we cannot guarantee whale sightings on the Molokini & Turtle Town Snorkel; during whale season (Dec. – March) it is a possibility that whales will be seen!

This was a very fun day! We first stopped at Molokini crater to snorkel. The water was very clear and we saw a good variety of fish in the ree Overall this was an excellent trip! Great crew and experience! I've snorkeled before but my boyfriend hadn't and they made him feel super comfortable. You get about 1 hour in the actual water but the water around Molokini was clear and calm even though getting out there was a little rough. The drinks at the end were a nice touch! Would go back with this crew next time!

Our family had a wonderful experience with the sunrise Molokini and Turtle Town Snorkeling adventure. The staff were casual, friendly, and fun. From the time you board the Calypso Triple-deck Catamaran, you will notice its quality and beauty, not to mention the friendly crew. Choose your favorite spot. There are three decks to choose from. Keep in mind you may want to be in the shade. If not, get that sunscreen on and enjoy the views in the front areas.

As you ride the beautiful blue waters you will witness the awesome views of Mount Haleakala, the House of the Sun, to your left (port side). Straight ahead will be Molokini and beyond it, Kahoolawe Island. Behind you catch a glance of the West Maui Mountains. If you are on Maui between November and April, you should keep your eyes open for our seasonal residents, the Humpback Whales. A continental-style breakfast consisting of assorted pastries, and fruits will also be served during your ride, and a snorkeling lesson will also take place for those who have never snorkeled or would like a “refresher”.

Molokini was formed by volcanic eruptions, which formed the shape of a horseshoe. The underwater visibility is incredible and the water feels fairly warm. Molokini is a State Marinelife and Bird Conservation District boasting over 250 ocean species. Some of them are endemic to the Hawaii waters and found nowhere else on earth. While snorkeling, you will enjoy over 100 feet of visibility and get to explorer one of the world’s most popular snorkeling sites. Getting in and out of the water is a breeze, as Calypso offers very spacious and comfortable steps. The friendly crew will also be available to assist you with floatation devices and anything else you might need to have the best time snorkeling in Molokini Crater! When returning to the boat you can take a nice freshwater shower to wash out the saltwater in preparation for your ride to your second snorkeling spot.

Next stop: Turtle Town, a beautiful outer reef located near Maluaka Beach, in Makena. The area is secluded from the trade winds and is home to the Honu, or Hawaiian Sea Turtles, who are frequently spotted lining up for a free cleaning offered by reef tropical fish in the area. It’s also called “turtle carwash”! A deli-style lunch will be served during your Turtle Town stop. Once you are no longer returning to the water, you will have the opportunity to purchase a beer or mai-tai ($3 each) to sip and enjoy on your ride back to Maalaea Harbor.

On your ride back to the harbor, keep your eyes open for turtles, dolphins, flying fish, and of course, our famous Humpback whales (in season). Your tour should be back at Maalaea harbor before 1 pm.

Eco-Friendly Molokini & Turtle Town Tour: (2024) Review

Hawaii is stunning, with numerous gorgeous islands, countless pristine beaches, and a fascinating historical culture. While there are many activities to enjoy on the islands, we will look today at one in particular: the Pacific Whale Foundation Eco-Friendly Molokini and Turtle Town Tour , and review the activities, the hosts, the price, and even the food.

A Breakdown of the Tour

This was our experience on the Pacific Whale Foundation Molokini and Turtle Town Tour. There may be variations in activities or prices based on what time you go or the season, but our group went in June.

Everyone met at the Pacific Whale Foundation Ocean Store to check in and for a briefing before walking to the boat and boarding. We were delighted to hear that the boat could fit around 140 guests, but there were only around 50 on board, which meant we wouldn’t be elbow-to-elbow.

After some great snorkeling, everyone got back into the boat for a short jaunt over to Turtle Town, Lahaina for some more snorkeling at a beautiful coral reef. Turtles are a frequent sight, and we happened to see a pretty gigantic turtle come to the surface, say hello, and dive back into its cave home. We were reminded at several points during the tour that the animals get to set the pace for the interactions and it is our responsibility to maintain a safe and respectful distance, which was a valuable and necessary tip for those who may not be used to getting so close to wild animals.

The Pros & Cons of the Molokini & Turtle Town Tour

Overall, what were the best and worst parts of the tour?

Let’s start with the cons (because there simply aren’t many):

• The price. At a steep $197 per person, this excursion is a bit pricey. Though, to be fair, much of that cost goes towards the ecological projects and their non-profit endeavors.
• The cost of the extras was also a bit steep. Make sure to bring all your essentials, including reef-safe sunscreen, because the prices of the onboard purchases were a fair bit more than the stores.
• The nausea could be a bit much for the more seasick-prone of your group. While avoiding this is not necessarily possible, and not a criticism of PWF in particular, the rides to/from Molokini and Turtle Town felt particularly choppy at points.
• All of the guides were extremely friendly and knowledgeable. When we had a question that one of the guides in training didn’t have an answer to, he actually went and sought out the answer and found us again to let us know! Colorful cards were passed around with information about the local fish.
• All the equipment was provided, like snorkel masks and fins, with wetsuits available to rent at a reasonable fee. We appreciated that the snorkel masks came in a variety of prescription sizes for those who don’t have 20/20 vision.
• It was clear that the tour company did their best to make the excursion as safe and family-friendly as possible. Even the young ones stayed and remained engaged on the fairly lengthy excursion.
• The pacing was perfect. We never felt rushed or bored. Five hours is a perfect amount of time to feel like you’re getting your money’s worth without feeling like it’s a neverending activity.
• The food was great, and there was plenty for everyone who wanted seconds.
• The snorkeling conditions were A+! The water was crystal clear and there were so many fish! We were able to take amazing photos with our (INSERT BRAND LINK) phone cases, and they look amazing!
• The Pacific Whale Foundation is a non-profit organization and, as they said on the tour, they spend much of their time educating local youth through their “Keiki Programs”, where they take the children of Hawaii out for educational tours in addition to the amazing tours they do for tourists!

Final Verdict: Is the Eco-Friendly Molokini & Turtle Town Tour a Good Choice?

There are many options for day trips and boat tours on Maui, but we highly recommend this one above the rest. Why? Because the sustainability aspect is so, so important. We love Hawaii, and we want to see its resources protected. Sustainable tourism is a big part of making that happen.

We loved how thoughtful the tour guides were and how much they emphasized having fun while respecting the coral reefs and the animals. Plus, it was a great feeling to know that the proceeds of the tour went back into educating and supporting the local Hawaiian community and its youth.
