Gateway to Qatar

Qatar is centrally located globally, close to Europe, Africa, and Asia. Flights from around the world touch down at Qatar’s Hamad International Airport daily, making Qatar the perfect place for layovers and visits.

Doha, the capital city of Qatar, is modern and rapidly developing, with much construction underway. It is home to most of the country’s best museums and examples of cultural heritage.

Hamad International Airport

Qatar connects to various destinations worldwide, making it an extremely busy transit spot. In fact, Hamad International Airport (HIA) has fast become the global gateway for overseas travellers. Opened in April 2014, the state-of-the-art airport is conveniently located just south of Doha city.

HIA is certified as a 5 Star Airport by Skytrax and was ranked the Best Airport in the World at the 2021 and 2022 Skytrax World Airport Awards. The airport currently serves more than 30 million passengers annually and is undergoing further expansion to support more than 50 million.

Qatar Airways

Qatar Airways, the award-winning national carrier, is certified as a 5-Star Airline for its airport and onboard product and staff service quality.

The Qatar Airways network connects Doha with more than 150 popular destinations worldwide, including most major cities throughout the Middle East, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australasia & North, and South America.

Cruise tourism brings over 100 thousand visitors annually to Qatar, enabling them to enjoy the many landmarks that are mere minutes from Doha Port. The peak season runs from October to May, allowing visitors to enjoy the country’s pleasant winter weather during that time.

Qatar has two major seasons: Summer and Winter. May to September can be considered summer, while December to February is the cooler season. March to April and October to November are the transition months.

Summer temperatures are routinely 50°C during the day and often more than 40°C at night. It’s important to wear sunblock, cover yourself and drink plenty of water when going outside during the day.

During cooler months (December to February), the temperatures average between 14°C and 25°C on most days.

Since most of the attractions are within a couple of hours distance from Doha, you do not have to stay at different hotels during your Qatar vacation.

Doha has the presence of almost all major hotel chains in the world. You can choose from a range of Qatar hotels from TripAdvisor .

Doha’s city centre is just 15 minutes drive from the airport by car. To get from HIA to the city, you can take Airport Taxis available at Arrivals Terminal or request your hotel to arrange a private hotel transfer. It is possible to rent a car at the airport or at the hotels. An international driving license is required for visitors to drive in Qatar.

For travelling around the city, you can use the official taxi network called Karwa Taxi or pre-book a taxi using mobile apps like Uber or Careem . Even though Qatar has a network of public buses, they are not recommended for first-time visitors as their frequency is not guaranteed.

Another option would be to use the newly constructed Doha Metro. You can read our complete guide to Doha Metro here: Doha Metro Map, Stations, Timings, Ticket Prices

Is to possible to change or extend tourist visa to work visa.?

Hi Shibla, In some cases, if your work visa is approved, you may be allowed to change your visa type without leaving the country. There will be an additional fee. Note that this may not be possible in all cases.

Hello. We arrive in Qatar at DOH November 24 at 6 AM. Are we allowed to leave the airport and visit the area for 8-10 hours that day? Thank you in advance for your reply.

Hi Robert, Due to the World Cup, the visa-on-arrival service (or any kind of tourist visa) is unavailable during that period. As per the current rule, you need a Hayya Card to visit Qatar from 1 November, and it is only available for those with a match ticket. There is still five weeks to go before your travel date. So please check back after a few weeks in case the rules change.

Greetings. can you please send me a paper map of Doha? Thanks a lot! Have a nice day!

25 Places to Visit and Things to Do in Doha, Qatar – Is Doha Worth Visiting?

While planning my trip to Qatar, I can confess that I didn’t know much about the country and, particularly, what to do in Doha.

The city, located on the coast of the Persian Gulf, was founded in 1820. It was officially declared Qatar’s capital when the country gained independence after the termination of the treaties with Great Britain in 1971.

Nowadays Doha is a thriving city and home to over 2 million inhabitants, more people than the rest of Qatar combined.

Visiting Doha is totally worthwhile, particularly if you’re looking for a Middle East capital that offers an intriguing mix of modern wonders and ancient traditions to explore. I spent a week in Qatar and I was really surprised to discover that there are spectacular places to visit in Doha.

To help you plan your trip, I’ve compiled the 25 top things to do in Doha in this post. Whether you’re doing a layover or spending a few days in the city, you’ll find attractions to please every visitor.

25 Best Things to Do in Doha, Qatar

1 – be in awe of the national museum of qatar.

There are five places to visit in Doha that you can’t miss ! The National Museum of Qatar is one of them.

The 350m-long unparalleled museum, designed by Jean Nouvel, houses 11 striking galleries dedicated to the history of Qatar, from the formation of the peninsula, over 700 million years ago, to the current days.

What I liked most about the NMOQ, apart from its unique architecture, is that some of the galleries feature films that are projected at immense scale against the curving walls creating immersive experiences with unique spectacles of light, sound, and image.

The National Museum of Qatar has two cafes, and a fine restaurant serving Qatari cuisine and holds temporary exhibitions. It’s open daily from 9:00am to 7:00pm (on Fridays from 1:30pm to 7:00pm) and costs QAR 50 (US$ 14 – £13).

Visiting the NMOQ is one of the best things to do in Doha and I loved it! The “Your brain to me, my brain to you” exhibition, by the Swiss artist Pipilotti Rist, was the cherry on the cake.

2 – Discover the multicoloured Box Park

If you’ve been to London, you might be familiar with Box Park, a food and retail park made of shipping containers. But did you know that there’s a Box Park in Doha?

Box Park Qatar, situated near Doha Port, a 25-minute walk from the National Museum of Qatar, is filled with colourful and vibrant metal boxes that have been repurposed as shops, cafés, dining outlets and commercial spaces, with various food trucks nearby.

You can grab some snacks, do water sports (including jet skiing and diving), take a boat ride, and enjoy the scenic panoramic views. Not to mention taking Instagram-worthy pictures.

3 – Visit MIA Park & the Museum of Islamic Art

A 10-minute walk from Box Park will take you to MIA Park, the most beautiful green space along the Doha waterfront.

The park offers a wide range of family-friendly activities, including sports events, film screenings and art workshops. MIA Park is one of the best places for outdoor activities in Doha and you can rent bicycles, paddleboards, kayaks, go running, etc.

MIA_Park_Doha_Qatar

Built on an artificial island connected to MIA Park is another Doha must-see attraction , the Museum of Islamic Art .

It houses one of the greatest collections of Islamic art in the world, including ceramics, glasses, manuscripts, metalwork, textiles, and more. The museum is open daily from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm, (on Fridays from 1:30 pm to 7:00 pm).

Visiting MIA Park and the Museum of Islamic Art is one of the top things to do in Doha with family.

4 – Stroll along the Al-Corniche

If you’re looking for things to do during a layover in Doha one of my top suggestions is the corniche.

The gorgeous 7-kilometre-long coastal palm-fringed promenade along Doha Bay is one of the most popular attractions in Qatar for tourists and locals alike.

Strolling through Doha Corniche you can get a good sense of the city. You can go sightseeing, watch the sunset, take pictures of the Pearl Monument, gaze at Doha’s modern skyline, take a Dhow boat cruise, etc.

Sunset at Al-Corniche, Doha, Qatar

5 – Take a Dhow Boat Cruise

While on the Corniche, why not take a boat ride on a dhow?

Dhows are traditional wooden sailboats historically used by merchants and fishermen. You’ll have the opportunity to learn about Qatar’s historical relationship with the sea, from pearl diving to fishing, and soak in the vista of the city skyline from the boat.

You can take a dhow cruise in the glowing dusk of the sunset or in the evening when the ultra-modern skyscrapers come alive with dancing lights. My recommendation is to book this cruise with a guide for a much richer experience.

6 – Get lost at Souq Waqif

If you’re looking for places to visit in Doha where you can interact with the Qatari culture, Souq Waqif, the city’s oldest souq, is the best option.

Nestled in the heart of the city, this renovated Arabic marketplace housed in traditional Qatari-style buildings sells garments, tapestries, spices, beautifully intricate handcrafts, souvenirs, etc. It’s also home to art galleries, restaurants, cafés, and shisha loungers.

What I liked most about Souq Waqif, apart from its picturesque buildings, was that I had the chance to observe the Qatari way of life and see things that I had never seen before, such as the desert rose.

You can get lost easily in the maze-like corridors stuffed with dozens of tiny stores.

Souq Waqif is another place that you can’t miss , whether you’re doing a stopover or staying in the city for a few more days.

7 – Learn about falconry

Falconry has been practised for over 4,000 years and is more than a social and recreational practice, it’s a living human heritage and a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity .

The falcon is Qatar’s national bird, and it plays an important part in the Qatari culture. If you want to learn more about it while in Doha, you should visit the Falcon Souq, at the edge of Souq Waqif.

Inside the arcaded buildings, you’ll find majestic birds standing still on wooden perches, accessories, and hunting equipment. There’s even a Falcon hospital and public auctions during the high season (from October to March).

8 – Wander around Msheireb Downtown

Following a friend’s recommendation, I went to Msheireb Downtown, which is located near Souq Waqif.

This old commercial district, revamped with a new architectural concept, comprises more than 100 buildings. You can find entertainment venues, four hotels, lovely al fresco dining options, cafés, and the biggest open-air covered pedestrian square in the region.

If you’re into architecture or looking for a cool place to meet friends, Msheireb Downtown is the place to go.

Msheireb Downtown courtyard, Doha, Qatar

9 – Take a look at the Spiral Mosque

The Spiral Mosque, another place to check out in the souq areas, is one of Doha’s most famous landmarks and the tallest mosque in Qatar.

The mosque is part of the Qatar Islamic Cultural Center and is a replica of the Great Mosque of Samarra in Iraq. The Spiral Mosque is a popular Doha attraction as it allows entry for non-Muslins and has a sermon on Fridays in English.

10 – Take a desert safari

Desert safari tours are very popular in Dubai, but also a bit touristy. I found the experience much better in Qatar!

You can ride a camel, go dune bashing, sandboarding, and the best, swim in the warm turquoise waters of the Inland Sea, a sea inlet of the Persian Gulf between Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

I loved my Desert Safari Tour, and it was one of the highlights of my trip to Doha.

You can’t miss the opportunity to take a desert safari, as it’s one of the best things to do in Doha, Qatar.

Book your desert safari tour on-line in advance.

  • The most popular desert safari tour is this one . I booked a private tour with some friends and you can watch the video here .
  • If you’re on a budget, this tour has good value for money.
  • If you prefer a luxury experience, in which you can use the facilities of a luxury beachfront resort, this is your tour.

11 – Go shopping at Galleries Lafayette

You might be familiar with Galleries Lafayette, an iconic Parisian luxury department store. But do you know that there’s one in Doha?

Oui oui mademoiselle and it’s outrageously stunning! The opulent buildings, the exquisite domes, the colourful Murano glass trees, and the AC in the outdoor area, all left me completely in awe.

The Galleries Lafayette Doha, located in the Katara Cultural Village, opened its doors in 2019. You can shop from over 400 high-quality brands, have a coffee at the French-style café and dine in one of its two top-notch restaurants.

12 – Explore Katara Cultural Village

Located on the western coast between West Bay and The Pearl, Katara Cultural Village is a dazzling cultural hub and has been one of the most popular places to visit in Doha since it opened in 2010.

In this ‘ancient-like walled city’ you can admire the design of Katara Mosque, check out pieces of art, discover the classical Greek style amphitheatre, taste local flavours, explore Al Thuraya Planetarium, catch a performance at the Opera House, enjoy the nearby beach, and walk to Katara Hills.

13 – Take in the scenic views from Katara Hills

When visiting Katara Village, don’t miss the opportunity to get a bird’s eye view of the city from Katara Hills, one of the largest parks in Doha.

Situated just across the cultural village, it features a lush landscape with trees from different continents and beautiful gardens. It also has running paths, water streams, and restaurants.

Climb atop the hills, catch your breath, and take in the panoramic views of Doha, the sea, and beyond, especially as it is aglow at sunset.

14 – Go to the beach

Featuring golden sand beaches with crystalline water, the beaches in Doha may not be on the tourist’s radar yet.

The best sandy beaches are in hotels or a short drive away. If you want to go to a public beach, Katara is the only centrally located. It’s public, but you must pay a small fee to get in (QAR 10/£ 2.40/US$ 2.75). A much better option is the Four Seasons Beach, where you can buy a day pass if you’re not a guest (QAR 295/£ 71/US$ 81).

If you’re driving, some beaches that are worth checking out include Al Wakrah, Sealine, and Inland Sea.

15 – Go to a beach club

If you want to upgrade your beach experience in Doha, go to a beach club.

Some of the best beach clubs are Monkey Tale , La Mar, Kaia , Nammos and Sushisamba . They boast crystal-clear swimming pools, luxury cabanas, comfy loungers, and DJs, and offer a great selection of food and drinks to choose from.

Spending the day at a beach club is one of my favourite things to do in Doha. I went to Monkey Tale on a Friday afternoon and loved it. A DJ was playing and the vibe was awesome.

16 – Stroll around The Pearl

The Pearl, Doha’s answer to Dubai’s Palm Island, is a man-made island, whose shape resembles a string of pearls, spanning approximately four million sqm. It’s one of the best free things in Doha and attracts over 15 million visitors yearly.

You can find a variety of charming restaurants and cafes, an iconic marina, cinemas, five-star hotels and luxury boutiques.

My recommendation is to go to the vibrant Medina Centrale , a town square inspired by the fascinating ambience of the Mediterranean, with a mixture of public plazas, gardens, terraces, canopies, and a piazza.

The Pearl Marina, Doha, Qatar

17 – Enjoy Doha nightlife

If you want to go partying, you might be surprised, like me, to find out that Doha has a bustling nightlife.

Before you hit the floor, you should know that most bars and clubs in Doha are restricted to five-star hotels as they have a liquor license to serve alcohol. They are open until 2:00 am.

Some of Doha’s best bars and clubs are: Aqua Lounge, Krossroads Clubs, Black Orchid , Oxygene Club, Sky View , and Vertigo .

Vertigo, Doha, Qatar

18 – Take your kid to Villagio Mall

Located within the Aspire Zone, Villagio is one of the most unique shopping centres not only in Doha but in the whole world.

The mall offers a large and diverse shopping experience and is home to many Western stores and restaurants. What’s special about Villagio is that it’s designed to look like Venice with blue sky ceilings, and bridges. There’s even a canal where you can take gondola rides.

If you’re travelling to Qatar with kids, you should take them to Villagio as it’s one of the best things to do in Doha for families. There are plenty of entertainment options, including a multiplex cinema, karts, and an ice rink. But the best is Gondolania, a theme park with rides, bowling, paintball, etc.

20 – Renew your faith at Qatar State Grand Mosque

Imman Abdul Wahhab Mosque, aka Qatar State Grand Mosque, is the largest mosque in the country and can house over 30,000 worshipers.

This imposing sandstone mosque with a succession of graceful arches, 93 domes, earth-coloured marble floors, round chandeliers and a red carpet is open to all visitors, regardless of religion, during non-prayer times.

When visiting this mosque, remember to dress conservatively, covering your shoulders and knees. Women must wear a scarf to cover their heads. Even if you don’t get inside, it’s a great place to take photographs.

Founded in 2011, MATHAF , the Arab Museum of Modern Art houses a unique collection of more than 9,000 modern and contemporary artworks from the Arab world and other regions that are historically and geographically connected to the Arab Peninsula, such as Iran, Turkey and India.

There are beautiful paintings, lovely and interesting sculptures, art installations, and more. The visit shouldn’t take more than 1h and it’s free of charge. Tickets must be booked in advance.

22 – Explore Lusail City

Located about 23 km (14 mi) from Doha, Lusail is a planned coastal city full of attractions that have become a popular Qatar destination. It’s home to the Lusail Iconic Stadium, which hosted the 2022 FIFA World Cup final, and the Formula One race track.

If you want to go to Lusail, my suggestion is to spend half a day in this futuristic and ‘smart’ city. You can go for a stroll along the palm tree-lined Marina Promenade, grab something to eat or drink at Lusail Marina Food Arena, check out the unique-looking buildings, and then go to Place Vendôme.

23 – Discover Place Vendôme

One of the most common things to do in Qatar in the summer is to go to shopping malls. It’s the reason that during my visit I went to check out Place Vendôme .

This Parisian-inspired leisure, entertainment, and luxury retail hub features a canal running through the venue directly from the sea, two five-star hotels, as well as luxury apartments, restaurants, and coffee shops.

The gorgeous mall, inspired by classic French-style architecture, features four floors with a mix of 580 high-end and mid-range stores, food courts, restaurants, cafes, head-spinning domes, and a fantastic water fountain show.

24 – Go Fine Dining

There isn’t a shortage of fine dining restaurants in the most populous city of Qatar! From Iranian to Persian and French to Chinese, you find cuisines to please every palate.

Most of Doha’s finest restaurants can be found in the city’s luxurious hotels, such as Spice Market (W Doha Hotels and Residences West Bay), Three Sixty (on the 47 th floor of the Torch), and Nobu Doha (Four Seasons Hotel).

Other excellent restaurants that are worth the money are Parisa (Souq Waqif), IDAM by Alain Ducasse (Museum Islamic of Art), and the lavish Yasmine Palace (The Pearl).

25 – Explore Qatar beyond Doha

If you want to discover other parts of Qatar while in Doha, my suggestion is to head to the North of the country or the West Coast.

Northern Qatar is famous for pearl diving and fishing and is known as the historical place of Qatar. During this half-day North of Qatar tour , you’ll visit many historical attractions and UNESCO sites including Al Zubara Fort, Purple Island and Barzan Towers.

If you choose this half-day West Coast tour , you’ll visit the fascinating ruins of Zekreet Fort, drive around Umbrella Rock Mountain and gaze in awe at a spectacular desert sculpture, by Richard Serra. In this one , you’ll also visit a camel racing track.

This is my list of the 25 best things to do in Doha and, if you find something else, let me know in the comments below, please.

I hope this post will help you plan your trip and that you’ll have a great time in Qatar.

Safe travels and have fun in Doha.

Even though it’s more on the expensive side, it proved to be a popular dining spot that hosts many restaurants, cafes and restaurants lined along its waterfront promenades cater to every taste.

If you have time book a boat cruise to Pearl island for a full experience.

Nicknamed the “Arabian Riviera”, the Pearl Qatar welcomes large numbers of tourists that flock each year to enjoy the haute cuisine, high-class entertainment and premium lifestyle.

If you want to stay on The Pearl you can book your stay on Wego .

Many of us have daydreamed about riding a camel and going on a desert safari. It’s one of those classic adventurer experiences, and amazingly this is one of the best things to do in Doha.

To truly enjoy nature at its finest and to experience the vast desert, jump into the dune bashing experience outside of the city.

Abandoning the dull tarmac for the adrenaline rush of the dunes, expect breathtaking scenery on a roller-coaster drive across the vast desert.

There are many various ways across the dunes. You can enjoy a smooth ride, or if you’re in for excitement, let your tour agent know that you would prefer to drive a fast and bumpy route.

Desert safaris will offer you a once in a lifetime experience. Walk through the pearly white beaches, and maybe even take a dip in the translucent waters of the Khor Al Udaid,

The best dune bashing tours will time it so when you start making the round trip back, you will be able to witness the spectacular sunset over Doha.

A perfect way to enjoy the sights of the beautiful Doha Bay is to take a leisurely stroll along the promenade, the Doha Corniche on the West Bay.

The best spot to take a memorable photo from your trip is to position yourself next to the promenade, close to the Museum of Islamic Art, and from there capture the panoramic view of the skyscrapers.

This is the heart of the capital, and you can find anything you might need. From cafes and restaurants for a short break between sightseeing to large green spaces for relaxation, this is one of the best places to visit in Doha.

Go on a private city tour to visit Doha Corniche along with other Doha attractions as the Museum of Islamic Art and Souq Waqif.

No trip to Doha is complete without a visit to the Al Zubarah Fort, located close to the town of Al Ruwais.

The Zubarah Fort is an iconic desert fort of Qatar. Its name was derived from the archaeological site of Al Zubarah town, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage site .

The fort is immaculately preserved and is one of the best examples of 18th – 19th-century settlements in the regions.

In the past, it was ranked as one of the Gulf’s most important pearl diving and trading centres that were linked to the Indian Ocean, and it was considered a prosperous trading town – making it one of the places to visit in Doha.

Today the fort serves as a wonderful museum. On the ground floor, there’s a small exhibition about the fort and the surrounding area that should not be missed.

It is a very beautiful fort, even though it’s not actually very old. The fort is only an hour’s drive outside of Doha, but it’s definitively worth the visit.

The Aspire Tower, otherwise known as The Torch Doha, is a 300-metre tall skyscraper hotel and is best known for being the symbol of the 15th Asian Games hosted by Qatar in 2006.

The tower is the tallest structure and building in Qatar and is without a doubt worth a visit for a number of reasons.

It is an architectural gem with its modern interiors, panoramic swimming pool on the 19th floor, and an amazing 360-degree rotating restaurant located at the very top to admire the gorgeous view of the city.

In Qatar owning a falcon is a status symbol.

Currently, it is the richest country in the world per capita, and a visit to the city will open your eyes to countless expensive sports cars and world-class skyscrapers.

And behind all of these luxuries is a population of wealthy business people and their falcons.

A long time ago when Qatar was just a vast desert its people, the Bedouins, trained falcons for hunting prey. It’s an idea that has lived on.

The continued efforts to preserve falconry is because it’s a vital part of their history and culture. Falconry has even been listed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity List for Middle Eastern culture.

In order to preserve the tradition of falconry, the government has been actively investing in the Falcon Souq.

At the Falcon Souq, there are dozens of shops that specialise in falcons.

If you’re lucky you will be able to witness their monthly auction where they judge the physical abilities of the falcons.

It’s quite a sight to behold.

Skyscrapers

The Barzan towers were built in the late 1800s (renovated in 1910), and they were used as watchtowers over the West Bay to ward off the possibility of an Ottoman invasion.

Even though the local military had defeated the Ottomans years earlier, the generals still had reasons to be apprehensive, which is why they were constructed.

Over the years the towers have been used for another service – inspecting the new moon during the holy month of Ramadan for accuracy.

The Barzan Towers are a very well-maintained monument with a rich and interesting history, and definitely one of the best tourist attractions in Doha.

A visit to the towers is a great opportunity to see what life like was for the pearl divers and military in the bygone years.

You can enter the towers and climb the internal staircases to reach the top level and marvel at the stunning scenery all around you.

  • Address: Umm Salal Muhammed
  • Opening hours: 24 hrs, recommended time to visit from 2 PM – 7 PM

Out in the middle of the Qatari desert is a new sculpture created by Richard Serra , called the “East-West/West-East Artwork”.

Serra always aspired to take the art off the pedestal and into the street, and his latest work achieves that perfectly.

Isolated in the desert you can gaze at his mesmerising sculptures, the four steel plates that are firmly craned into the dunes.

This project spans the greatest area of any of Serra’s creations, and it’s a real must to venture out into the desert and experience it firsthand.

The Villagio Mall clearly stands out as something unique when compared to the other Doha shopping malls, and it is one of the most impressive architectural feats in Qatar with its stunning architecture, luxury brands and an exciting range of shopping, dining as well as entertainment options.

The mall is spectacularly designed with a creative ambience that makes you feel as if you’re somewhere in Venice.

The Villagio Mall is so big that it will take you a few hours to explore all of the shops, which range from normal retail to high-end luxury products.

It really is a perfect place for families too, as you can offer your kids a platitude of different activities such as ice skating, bowling and even a roller-coaster!

  • Address: Al Waab St
  • Opening hours: Monday (9 AM – 12 AM), Tuesday – Wednesday (9 AM – 10 PM), Thursday and Saturday (9 AM – 11 PM), Friday (9 AM – 11 AM, 12.30 PM – 11 PM)

Love Doha Airport. My only real memory of Doha itself is paying nearly 14 USD for a beer. Could only find beer in a Western branded hotel. Had to present my passport and then take the elevator to the top floor bar. Needless to say, it was a one and done night.

Wow what an expensive beer. Definitely a one and done night with that price. Cheers for reading.

Qatar Travel Tips: 19 Useful Things to Know Before You Visit Doha

Considering a stopover in Doha or planning your first visit to Qatar for the FIFA World Cup? This list of 19 incredibly useful Qatar travel tips covers everything from dress code and rules for couples, to budgeting, and how to move around the city.

In many respects, Qatar is a closed book.

Before I decided to sign up for a layover in Doha , I knew very little about this tiny oil-rich Islamic country in the Persian Gulf. Like many travellers before me, it was precisely this sense of the ‘unknown’ that lured me to visit Doha – that, and the promise of fragrant souqs, harbours crowded with dhow boats and men parading the streets with falcons perched on their wrists instead of Rolex watches.

What is it like to travel in the richest country in the world per capita, where more than 85% of the local population are expats or migrant workers?

Most people’s experience of Qatar will be like mine: A somewhat superficial brush with a small but socially complex country on an extended layover. For practical reasons, Qatar is a great place to break up a long flight (the trip from Australia to Georgia , for example).

Even if your visit is fleeting (heck, even if you’re not planning to leave the airport), there are certain things you should know about Qatar in advance to make your experience in this beautiful Middle Eastern nation smoother and more enjoyable.

From what to wear, to which day of the week to avoid and a few sure-fire tips to save money, here are 19 incredibly useful Qatar travel tips to help you prepare for your visit.

19 practical qatar travel tips, 1. a qatar airways stopover is the easiest way to organise your doha visit.

If you want a taste of Doha, you can squeeze a lot into a 24 or 48-hour layover .

In an effort to encourage more people to travel with the national carrier and break-up their journey in Doha, Qatar’s tourism board introduced a program to incentivise extended layovers. Booked through Qatar Airways , a stopover can take a lot of the hassle out of organising a trip.

It works like this: Choose your airfares to and from Doha (they must be with Qatar Airways, and you must leave a minimum gap of 12 hours between flights). You’ll then be eligible for a ‘free stopover’ of 1-4 nights. Benefits include a heavy discount on a selection of 4 and 5-star hotels , and a free transit visa (if you need one).

If your stopover is shorter (6-12 hours), you can opt for a discounted Doha transit tour instead.

2. The climate is extreme, so time your visit wisely

Remember when Qatar was first named host country for the 2022 FIFA World Cup? Most newscasters’ first reaction was to point to the absolute unsuitability of the climate for outdoor sports.

Qatar has a desert climate – hot and dry are the imperative words here. But that doesn’t mean it’s sweltering year-round.

Cool season (December through February) is mild, with temperatures averaging 14-25 Celsius most days. Desert gusts are tempered, skies are clear, and rainfall is minimal, giving Doha a spring-like atmosphere. This is by the far the best time to visit Qatar (and for the record, this is when the World Cup will take place, too).

With that in mind, Qatar is certainly not a place you want to visit in the peak summer months. May through September is much warmer, with max temperatures hovering around the low 40s. July, traditionally the hottest month of the year, should be avoided at all costs. It’s not unusual for the mercury to soar to 43 Celsius in June, July and August.

You should also consider whether your visit will coincide with the Holy Month of Ramadan . Qatar is an Islamic nation, and majority of people observe the 30 days of fasting and prayer. Under Sharia Law, it is illegal to eat or drink in public in Doha during Ramadan. Most cafes and restaurants close during the day, while shops, museums and the souq all observe restricted hours.

Other rules, such as dress code , are more strictly enforced during the Holy Month.

3. Doha is surprisingly affordable

The official currency in Qatar is the Qatari riyal (QAR) . Like in neighbouring Oman , it’s relatively easy to make your money stretch further. We drew up a rough budget and withdrew cash on our first day in Doha (ATMs, by the way, are ubiquitous, and most venues accept payment by credit card). This was one of the rare times we over-estimated our spend and had to change most our riyals back into USD at the airport.

In the end, we spent around 40 USD per person per day on food and transport in Doha. That was enough to cover three solid meals, a few trips on the metro, and tickets for the Museum of Islamic Arts.

Food portions are huge, so you can easily save money by sharing meals. The metro is cheaper than taking a taxi (more on that later), and you can save even more cash by avoiding ticketed attractions (our biggest expense by far, aside from accommodation, was museums).

4. Tipping is customary, but not mandatory

There are no hard and fast rules about tipping in Qatar – but it is increasingly expected in Doha, especially from tourists.

If you’re happy with the service, it is considered polite to offer waiters and other staff a small gratuity. Generally speaking, 10-15% is acceptable for restaurants, cafes and bars, while you should aim to tip your taxi driver or gas station attendant 5-10 QAR.

15 essential Qatar travel tips to know before visiting Doha – including dress codes, rules for foreigners, how much to budget and how to get around.

5. Doha shuts down on Friday mornings

Friday prayers, or Salat al-Jumu’ah , are an obligatory religious ritual in Qatar. Walking around on a Friday morning, Doha can feel like a ghost town as most people are busy attending mosque.

Restaurants, cafes and museums don’t open until 1pm or 2pm on Fridays . Two of the city’s most popular attractions, the Museum of Islamic Art and Souq Waqif, are both closed on Friday mornings. If your Qatar layover falls on a Friday, keep in mind that you’ll have to structure your itinerary around these restricted hours.

Also bear in mind that the Doha metro doesn’t start running until 2pm on Fridays.

6. There is a dress code when you visit Doha

Much like rules for couples, there seems to be tension between official policy and public consensus when it comes to the dress code in Doha.

From my observations, locals and expats in Doha tend to dress modestly in their daily life. Long, loose-fitting clothing seems to be the preferred style. As Qatar is a Muslim country, tourists are generally expected to cover their shoulders and knees at a minimum (although I did see a few short skirts and spaghetti tops on the street during my visit).

Showing too much skin in public places is frowned upon. Swimsuits are only allowed in hotel pool areas or on private beaches , and are forbidden on public beaches.

The rules are of course a lot stricter if you’re visiting a mosque or religious site . You won’t be permitted entry to a mosque unless you’re covered up and wearing a scarf over your hair (women). It surprised me to learn that you might be denied entry to the Museum of Islamic Art if your shoulders and knees aren’t covered. This is the only place I’m aware of that imposes such restrictions.

The dress code at the airport is more liberal, but I still recommend carrying a light cardigan and wearing long pants if you’re transiting through Doha and want to feel more comfortable.

The consequences for donning inappropriate attire range from awkward stares from locals through to be removed from a venue by security or even being fined by police. Dress codes are more strictly enforced during Ramadan. Needless to say, small towns and rural areas are more conservative, so you should always dress modestly outside Doha .

7. Arabic is the official language, but English is widely spoken

Being a former British protectorate, English is widely spoken in Qatar. Arabic is the nation’s official language for daily use, but when it comes to business, trade and official procedures, English is the go-to.

You’ll find that most Qataris speak English, especially those who work in tourism. We had no issues getting around with English only.

8. It’s perfectly safe to visit Doha as a (solo) woman

Provided you dress appropriately and avoid certain behaviours such as drinking in public (more on that later), Doha is a perfectly safe place for solo female travellers .

Crime rates are very low in Doha across the board, which is why it’s constantly ranked among the top 3 safest cities in the world . Streets are well-lit at night, and apart from the odd overexcited taxi driver, there’s not really a ‘hassle culture’ in Doha. You won’t be approached in the souq, for instance.

One thing you should be aware of is ‘men-only’ establishments – tea houses and restaurants that are closed off to Qatari ladies and foreign women alike (this should be pretty obvious if there’s only dudes around). Most public spaces are of course mixed, but some restaurants and cafes have special ‘family areas’ for women and children. The Doha metro has family carriages if you want to sit with other females.

Here are more tips for visiting Doha as a solo female traveller .

9. There are particular rules for couples

If you’re travelling to Qatar as a couple, there are particular local laws and social customs to be aware of.

Until recently, unmarried couples were prohibited from sharing a hotel room. This rule seems to have been relaxed in recent years, at least for foreign tourists. According to recent reports, it still applies to Qatari couples and expats living in the country.

This was our experience: We booked a hotel room in Doha under my husband’s name. Despite having different surnames in our passports, we weren’t asked to explain the nature of our relationship. We were married at the time (this was actually our honeymoon), so we weren’t particularly concerned – I had a copy of our marriage certificate ready to show if needed.

If this is something you’re worried about, try sticking to international hotel chains (for example, the InterContinental) or just email your accommodation in advance to double check the house policy.

Homosexuality is illegal in Qatar, but it’s not unusual for men (for example, business travellers) to share a hotel room. See here for more information and advice about queer travel in the Middle East .

Public displays of affection (including hand-holding) are illegal in Qatar.

Arched buildings in the souq in Doha.

10. Some hostels are single-gender

If you’re booking a hostel in Doha, make sure you check whether it’s gender-separated . Some hostels only offer men’s dorms (for example, Casper Hostel ), while T Ladies Hostel is female-only. To make things confusing, the policy isn’t always obvious at first.

Q Hostel offers both men’s and women’s dorms – but no hostel in Qatar offers mixed dorms. Couples, therefore, may be better off upgrading to a mid-range hotel.

A final note on accommodation in Doha: Airbnb is legal in Qatar and can be an affordable alternative to a hotel. You can find some beautiful self-contained apartments with sea views around The Pearl, and simpler private rooms near the souq.

11. Qatar is incredibly multicultural

Another thing that surprised me about Qatar is that 85.7% of the population is made up of expats . India, Bangladesh and Nepal are the top three countries represented.

As a visitor, you feel Qatar’s cultural diversity on several levels. Firstly, the plurality of faces on the street is obvious and gives Doha a cosmopolitan feel. Travellers also benefit from an incredibly rich food scene , including some great Indian and Yemeni restaurants.

But you can’t ignore the fact that many of these workers are low-paid (or unpaid) labourers . As far as I know, forced labour isn’t directly related to the tourism industry in Qatar, but it’s still something to keep in mind when you’re visiting Doha.

The ILO is a great resource for information on this topic.

12. Qatari culture is relatively accessible

Gulf nations like the United Arab Emirates are known for flashy developments and high-rise buildings. But Qatar is a little closer to Oman in terms of local culture. Downtown Doha is quite modern, but it’s clear that the government has gone to great lengths to ensure preservation of local culture in the architecture.

Despite the fact that it’s reconstructed, Souq Waqif still appears true to style. The Falcon Market is the perfect place to experience one of Qatar’s most beloved local customs, falconry.

My advice is to skip the shiny shopping malls and stick to traditional markets.

13. Doha is home to one of the world’s most sustainable city districts

One of the first things that strikes you about Doha is how new and polished everything feels. There are grungy corners, yes – but for the most part, even the oldest parts of the city (including the souq) have been entirely reconstructed.

This has pros and cons. On the downside, Doha lacks the gritty charm and ‘rustic authenticity’ of Muscat , for example.

On the plus side, when you re-build a city from scratch, the only limit is your imagination. In the case of Msheireb, one of Doha’s oldest districts, planners envisaged a futuristic, sustainable city when they went about revitalising the area.

Msheireb Downtown combines traditional Qatari design with green technology. The district has the highest concentration of LEED-Certified buildings in the world . Streets are laid out to catch the Gulf breeze and shade walking routes and windows, limiting the need for air conditioning.

The whole area is solar powered and planted out with native flora. Massive underground car parks have been installed to limit traffic and encourage people to walk or cycle.

Pretty neat, huh?

A cup of tea on a red tablecloth.

14. Qatar is a tea-drinking nation

Skip the water, skip the booze: Grab a tea instead.

Tea is ubiquitous in Doha, and enjoying a cuppa or two (or three) at a local cafe or chai house is a must-do for every visitor. In the mornings, you can find groups of men sitting around playing dominoes and sipping short glasses of bubbly, brick-coloured karak tea .

Karak was introduced to Qatar by Indian and Pakistani expats in the 1950s. A version of Masala Chai, karak is a heady brew of tea, milk, sugar and spices boiled low and slow for maximum flavour. The traditional Qatari version contains only cardamom , but cinnamon, cloves or ginger may also be added.

A cup of karak typically costs 1-4 QAR depending on the establishment.

15. You should avoid drinking tap water (and alcohol)

Qatar isn’t a dry country, but alcohol is strictly regulated . Booze served in hotels is subject to a ‘sin tax’ and expensive as a result. If you’re serious about saving money, avoid drinking.

There is conflicting information online, but the general consensus is that you shouldn’t drink the tap water in Doha. Drinking fountains around mosques and on the Corniche should also be avoided, particularly if you have a sensitive stomach.

Apart from being a terrible blight on the environment, there are also concerns over imported bottled water in Qatar containing higher than normal levels of arsenic. The easiest solution is to carry a Steripen or LifeStraw and purify your own water .

16. It takes a ridiculously long time to cross the street

Walking around Doha can be a strange experience. First of all, pavements are usually deserted (especially in the middle of the day) as most people opt to drive.

One peculiarity we noticed is the time it takes to cross the street. Every intersection is fitted with lights and pedestrian crossings in a bid to control heavy traffic in the inner-city. These run on a ‘smart system’ that uses sensors to detect cars and direct flows.

As a result, it’s not uncommon to have to wait 10 minutes or more to cross the street in Doha. But wait you must – drivers are unpredictable, speeding is common, and jaywalkers face fines of up to $140.

A red and white street sign in Doha, Qatar.

17. There are construction sites everywhere!

Like many other Middle Eastern countries in the Gulf Region, parts of Qatar and especially Doha do feel like one big construction site.

New power plants, expressways, stadiums and apartment blocks are mushrooming in every corner of the city, and this does mean that some streets are dusty and noisy as a result. Take care when you’re walking around Doha, and if you’re a particularly light sleeper, it might be worth checking if your accommodation is close to a worksite.

18. Metro is the best way to get around

If you prefer not to walk, you can always take an Uber . But the most cost-effective way to move around Doha is using the city’s relatively new underground metro system.

Completed in May 2019, it’s one of the fastest driverless trains in the world. Departures are frequent, it’s very easy to navigate, and most major tourist attractions (including the Corniche, the museum and Katara Cultural Centre) have dedicated ultra-modern stations.

Best of all, a one-way metro fare costs just 2 QAR . Single tickets can be bought from machines inside the stations – no cards or top-ups necessary.

There are three metro lines: The north-south red line (handy for getting to Katara Cultural Village), and the east-west gold and blue lines. Running hours are still being negotiated, but at the time of writing, the metro runs from 6am until 11pm Saturday to Wednesday, from 6am until midnight on Thursdays, and from 2pm until midnight on Fridays.

In December 2019, the metro expanded to include a stop at Doha’s international airport , making this an efficient way to get into the city when you first arrive in Qatar.

19. You need a car to explore beyond the city

Public transport within Doha is efficient and affordable. But if you want to explore beyond the city centre, you’re going to need a car.

Here, you have two options: Either hire your own wheels and self-drive – the easiest way to explore on. your own terms – or join an accompanied tour . A day tour is the best way to go if you have limited time in Doha and you want to see something specific (such as the Inland Sea or Zakreet).

If you have more time and want the freedom to seek out far-flung sand dunes and coastal fishing villages, consider renting a car at Hamad International Airport . All major companies are represented. I suggest using Discover Cars to find the best price on a rental for your dates and requirements.

Qatar is a signatory of the United Nations convention and thus it is a legal requirement for all foreigners to present a valid International Driving Permit (IDP) when hiring a car. Driving in Qatar is fairly straightforward, but for safety reasons, it’s best to limit your driving to daylight hours.

Where to stay in Doha

We stayed at Saraya Corniche for 2 nights during our Doha stopover. Our room was comfortable but a little dated – however, we really loved the central location walking distance from the waterfront and souq.

If we had our time again, we would choose either the InterContinental or Souq Waqif Boutique Hotel . The latter is set right in the heart of the souq and features roomier, more luxe suites than Saraya.

If you’re on a shorter layover and you prefer to stay near the airport, Oryx Transit Hotel is the top choice.

Exploring Doha is a must, but the modern capital isn’t the only part of Qatar worth a visit © Maja Topcagic / Stocksy United

The pint-sized nation of Qatar isn’t technically a one-city state, but there’s no denying that Doha , home to more than 90% of Qatar’s population, is the main attraction.

Yet the country’s modern capital isn’t the only corner of this Gulf nation that’s worth a visit. Venture beyond Doha to discover the shiny new sister city Lusail and a pseudo-tropical island escape or strike out into the desert to uncover glimpses of Qatar’s pearling past and unexpected natural wonders.

Here’s a quick guide to the best places for couples, families, or solo travelers to visit around Qatar.

Illuminated traditional houses and people in outdoor restaurants in the historical district of Doha.

See the sights and dine out in Doha

Doha’s rapid transformation from sleepy seaside settlement to glitzy Gulf capital is legendary. As the city’s futuristic skyline continues to expand, so too do reasons to visit, with recent years welcoming the striking National Museum of Qatar , the 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum , and a gamut of international hotels, with a new metro system making it easier to get around.

Get a taste of Doha’s early days – along with regional culinary specialties – at the fabulously atmospheric Souq Waqif and then stroll along the waterfront Corniche to admire city and Doha Bay views. Marvel at the Museum of Islamic Art (inside and out) and seek out public art, mosques, and more in the Katara cultural village.

Hop on the metro to visit Lusail

Just 20km (12.4 miles) north of downtown Doha and connected by metro, Lusail feels like an extension of the capital. But this coastal metropolis-in-the-making is actually a city in its own right. While still largely a construction zone, Lusail is already home to some of Qatar’s most striking architecture, notably the nation’s showpiece arena, Lusail Stadium, shaped like a traditional woven bowl; and Katara Towers, which integrates the traditional scimitar swords from the national seal into a pair of 36-story towers housing two luxury hotels. You’ll also find a marina with a pleasant promenade, the high-end Parisian-inspired Place Vendome mall, and more attractions in the making.

With the first line on the Lusail Tram (connected to the Doha Metro) opened in 2022, Lusail is easier than ever to visit via public transport.

Families should save time for Banana Island

Qatar’s only offshore island of note, Banana Island is just a 30-minute catamaran ride from Doha. This small, crescent-shaped isle is occupied entirely by the family-friendly Banana Island Resort Doha by Anantara. Stay in an underwater bungalow and you can (almost) imagine you’re in the Maldives or visit for the day and enjoy the island’s peaceful palm-studded strip of sand. Day passes include boat transfers and credit to spend at the resort’s restaurants and on watersports.

Uncover history at Al Zubarah and Al Jumail

Most people know Al Zubarah for its Unesco-listed fort, but Al Zubarah Fort was named for the thriving pearling port that now lies in ruins between the fort and the sea after being abandoned in the early 20th century. While the ruins are currently closed to the public, you can glimpse the town’s crumbling foundations from the entrance to the handsomely restored fort.

About 20km (12 miles) farther north, turn off the main road to explore the deserted village of Jumail. Founded in the 19th century, the coastal village was also abandoned following the economic boom ignited by Qatar’s oil and gas industries. Al Zubarah is a 90-minute drive northwest of Doha. It can be visited on an organized tour with the likes of 356 Adventures , but you’ll need a car to get to Jumail.

A hut in Al Khor at the end of a bridge that looks over some mangroves

History and nature meet in Al Khor

An hour’s drive north of Doha and accessible by public bus, the small coastal city of Al Khor isn’t much to look at, but it’s home to several attractions that make it worth a brief visit. Chief among them are the three stone watchtowers that stand along the coast. Built around 1900, the towers were used to monitor ships and guard access to the area’s main well, Ain Hleetan, which has also been preserved.

Just beyond Al Khor, a boardwalk takes you through a lush mangrove nature reserve to Bin Ghannam Island (also known as Purple Island), where shell middens have revealed traces of human activity dating back to the 2nd millennium BC. Farther north, the village of Al Thakira is a launchpad for mangrove kayaking tours.

Hit the beach in northeastern Qatar

The largely undeveloped and sparsely populated northeastern corner of Qatar offers a handful of attractions worth checking out if you’re planning to rent a car, beginning with the mysterious Al Jassasiya Rock Carvings near Al Maroona Beach (also known as French Beach), one of Qatar’s most pleasant public beaches. Farther north, Fuwairit Beach is being developed as a kitesurfing destination.

Perched on Qatar’s northeastern tip is Zulal Wellness Resort , a luxe modern retreat guided by traditional Arabic and Islamic medicine and one of the few places to stay in the region. The nearby port town of Al Ruwais lacks notable attractions, but its Shamal Corniche is a scenic spot for a sunset stroll.

Explore desert oddities in Zekreet

The small west coast village of Zekreet is the jumping-off point for visiting the Brouq Peninsula (also known as  Bir Zekreet ), home to attractions including US artist Richard Serra’s gigantic  East–West/West–East installation, which rises up between otherworldly rock formations. You can also check out the Film City ghost town, a recreation of a traditional village built for an Arabic TV series.

But tiny Zekreet, 90km (56 miles) from Doha, has a couple of sights of its own, including a restored historic mosque and Zekreet Fort, thought to have been built in the late 18th or early 19th century. Dismantled for reuse of the stone by local inhabitants, the fort’s foundations are all that remain. Zekreet has a few simple places to eat but nowhere to stay.

Southern Qatar is ready for adventure

The southernmost stop on the Doha Metro, the small city of Al Wakrah has a pleasant seafront souq (market) selling everything from honey, spices, and dates to perfumes and souvenirs. You can also take a stroll around the perimeter of the historic Al Wakra Fort, but it’s not currently open to the public.

From here, you can take a bus or an Uber 30 minutes south to Sealine Beach , one of Qatar’s most popular public beaches, with several dive sites close to the shore. The east coast road ends here, and the towering sand dunes of southern Qatar begin. Book an off-road tour to Khor Al Adaid , which takes you across mountains of sand to Qatar’s “inland sea”, a scenic tidal embayment that marks Qatar’s border with Saudi Arabia.

Similarly to northern Qatar, southern Qatar is typically visited on a day trip from Doha. However, this region has several accommodation options, including Sealine Beach Resort , a lovely spot for couples, and several rustic desert camps if linger.

Perth travel highlights

Explore the 45,000-year history of the Noongar in the Western Australian Museum before heading to the beach, or one of Perth’s many secluded islands.

Australia’s sunniest city is easy to explore – there are free buses and walking tours in the city, plenty of guided tours that will take visitors further afield and it’s an easy self-drive destination. Perth’s vibrant urban offering is complemented by its nature-based experiences. Visitors to the city can connect with the Swan River on a foreshore bike ride, a lunch or wander around Elizabeth Quay, a boat tour with an Aboriginal guide or simply soak up the sunset over the Indian Ocean on one of the city’s 19 metropolitan beaches. Just 30-90 minutes from the city centre, visitors can be swimming with dolphins, meeting cute quokka’s on Rottnest Island or cruising the canals of Mandurah.

All the finest ingredients for a fantastic holiday can be found here so it is no wonder that Perth is so high on the list for the world’s most liveable cities.

Located on the edge of the picturesque Swan River, Elizabeth Quay is transforming the foreshore into a free playground for all ages. Here you’ll be sure to enjoy the city’s active lifestyle, abundant sunshine, amazing views, alfresco dining, outdoor markets and lively festival scene.

Finding an immense native park studded with trees that live for 2,000 years, a suspended bridge and dense wildflower carpets in the heart of a capital city is as unexpected as it is engaging. Kings Park – full of soaring native trees, birds, small mammals and Aboriginal heritage – is bigger than New York’s Central Park, making it one of the world’s largest and prettiest urban parklands.

Cottesloe is an iconic beach for Perth locals and visitors alike, blessed with a wide sweep of squeaky white sand, is fringed on one side by the transparent turquoise waters, of the Indian Ocean, and a number of beachside on the other by cafés, restaurants and casual beachy shops.

Northbridge is a cultural feast for the senses within minutes of the city. Showcasing local, national and international art, fashion and history, it’s also a multicultural melting pot of flavours blended together with a lively mix of bars and nightclubs.

Perth is the only Australian capital where you’ll find yourself surrounded by gourmet sweet treats and fresh produce, arts and crafts and beautiful natural bushland.

Fremantle, Perth’s bohemian sister city lies at the mouth of the Swan River, a short train ride west of Perth’s city centre. Effortlessly blending old and new, Fremantle offers a glimpse back to Perth’s early years with preserved historic streetscapes, and a European feel that carries through to today in numerous coffee shops, tapas bars, and restaurants serving up the freshest seafood straight from the harbour.

Take a journey to Rottnest Island, Perth’s secluded island playground surrounded by coral reefs and the sparkling Indian Ocean. A ferry, plane, helicopter or even seaplane can transport you to the place where locals go to swim, surf, snorkel, fish and relax. Keep an eye out for the adorable quokka, a mini marsupial with a big grin, found only in Western Australia.

Perth has an abundance of sun-kissed beaches, offering plenty of opportunities for lazing, swimming and water-sports. For the more action-prone traveller, cycling the city’s bike paths is highly recommended, and is a great way to see more of the city. Residents and visitors spend hours in Perth’s botanic gardens and public green areas, which include Lake Monger and Bold Park. For a day trip from Perth, visit John Forrest National Park, Western Australia’s oldest. It is home to a variety of plant communities, two waterfalls and wildlife that includes the national icon: kangaroos.

The city’s dining scene has also undergone a transformation which has positioned Perth as a food paradise. Sitting under a balmy night sky, beside an Indian Ocean sunset, or with a million-dollar Perth city view is the way to dine in Perth – an experience made all the more memorable by the imaginative and award-winning creations of Perth’s chefs and baristas.

Discover a growing European-style small bar scene tucked away within Perth’s laneways. Seek out chic eats of the finest fresh and organic local produce in the CBD (Central Business District) and trendy inner-city enclaves. Feast on Fremantle’s yesteryear charm, vibrant Boat Harbour dining scene and heritage colonial pubs. Or tuck into some fish and chips as you catch the sunset from Perth’s iconic Cottesloe Beach.

Perth’s State buildings precinct in the heart of the CBD epitomises the city’s appetite for the highest quality national and international cuisines. When you’re done, explore the neighbouring restaurants in the State Building precinct. For contemporary Australia fare, head for the rooftop views at Wildflower, and for a smack of fiery Thai street food, Long Chim matches mouth-watering flavours with street-art inspired decor in a basement setting.

Retail therapy can be found in the form of leading fashion houses, chic boutiques and outlet bargains on a shopping spree in Perth, Northbridge and West Perth.

Seekers of high-end fashion should head for the King Street precinct, in the west end of the city – the perfect place to indulge in international and local designer labels and luxury brands. Other rich pickings include designer jewellery crafted from Western Australian gold, Argyle diamonds, Australian opals and Broome’s famous South Sea pearls.

Other popular city shopping precincts for big-brand fashion, jewellery, housewares and more include the Murray and Hay Street malls, Brookfield Place, Raine Square, Enex 100, 140 William, Wesley Quarter, Arcade 800 and Bon Marche Arcade.

If vintage, hip and quirky is more your style, make a beeline for the boutiques of William Street in Northbridge. Or, if it’s a bargain you really want, take the train or go on a short drive to West Perth’s Watertown-the buzzing hub of outlet shopping.

For more local flavour, pop in at one of Perth’s bustling farmers’ markets. Head to Subiaco, Mount Claremont, Palmyra, and North Perth for near city farm freshness. Seasonal hawkers markets run through spring, summer and autumn in Perth’s Forrest Place, and food truck feasts line Inglewood’s stretch of Beaufort Street every Monday across the same period.
