Norway Cruise Highlights

Norwegian fjords.

Nature buffs and adventure seekers can’t miss seeing the stunning Norwegian fjords during their cruise. Bergen is a great jumping-off point to see fjords like Hardangerfjord, the country’s second-largest fjord. UNESCO World Heritage Site Geirangerfjord is known as the “crown jewel” of the country’s fjords, contrasting steep waterfalls with snow-peaked mountain caps. Go slightly off-the-beaten path to neighboring Hjørundfjord, where activities like fjord fishing and kayaking will captivate you.

Art & History

Explore Oslo’s famous Viking Ship Museum and see three expertly preserved vessels. Spend a while at the Munch Museum, dedicated to the painter Edvard Munch, known best for his painting “The Scream.” In Bergen, Bryggens Museum is a mighty testament to life in the town before a devastating fire in 1955, where excavations uncovered beautiful reminders of everyday Norwegian life. Bergen is also home to its own art museum that uniquely preserves the homes of famous composers throughout history. Time travel at Sunnmøre Museum in Alesund, an open-air exhibit featuring preserved homes and boats dating back to medieval times.

Craft Breweries

Norway’s distilleries and craft microbrewing scene is rapidly growing in cities like Bergen and Alesund. After decades of mostly serving lagers, microbrewers around the country wanted to offer more variety for beer drinkers, so they started to brew their own IPAs, pale ales, and stouts. Ever since, Norway’s cities have brewed hundreds of their own unique drafts. Unwind after a day’s hike and try something new on the menu.

Featured Ports

Bergen, norway.

Rows of deep red, burnt orange, and white houses near Bryggen Wharf is one of the top sights in the city. Enjoy a romantic wharfside meal or a cozy coffee there before you visit Bryggens Museum or St. Mary’s Church. Ride a funicular rail to the summit of Mt. Fløyen for incredible panoramic views of the city below. Explore the surrounding fjords on an unforgettable kayaking or hiking adventure.

Alesund, Norway

On a Norway cruise, you’ll visit the picturesque town of Alesund, frequently cited as one of the country’s most beautiful places to visit. Spend a leisurely day exploring the Art Nouveau District. Hike up nearly 500 steps to Aksla Viewpoint and admire the stunning vistas of the archipelago and breathtaking fjords beyond. The town is also the gateway to Geirangerfjord, one of Norway’s most famous natural wonders and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, nestled between imposing cliffs on all sides.

Oslo, Norway

Let Oslo’s metropolitan atmosphere energize you as you explore its opulent palaces and incredible museums. The capital of Norway is teeming with Viking history, from ships dating back to the 9th century at the Viking Museum to 17th-century art at the National Museum. Art lovers won’t want to miss seeing Edvard Munch’s “The Scream” in person. When you move on from historic wonders, grab a craft beer or sample local salmon at any of Oslo’s trendy eateries.

Norway Cruise Itineraries

Embark on an unforgettable cruise to Norway aboard Celebrity Silhouette or Celebrity Reflection. Sailing from May to August, our Norwegian fjord cruises last anywhere from seven nights to nine nights. Longer itineraries give you the chance to see towns like the mountainous Flam or the remote Geiranger. On a Northern Europe cruise, you’ll overnight in Oslo on the way to cities like Copenhagen, Bruges, and Paris, or visit the capital before venturing to Sweden and Finland.

Norwegian fjords

Bergen - oslo, dates: 7/6/2024 to  7/13/2024.

Guest Speaker

This is where nature has shaped its most majestic masterpieces… Majestic fjords bordered by monumental cliffs cutting into the coastline of the North Sea, legendary lands featuring fascinating fauna, vertiginous waterfalls tumbling from immense rock walls. Norway will open its doors to you for a unique 8-day journey from Bergen to Oslo, through these ancestral lands, home to myths, conquest and geological wonders.

The seven mountains overlooking the old town and the Hanseatic wharf, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in Norway’s former capital (in the 12th and 13th centuries) grow distant. You will head out to sea, sailing south for the charming city of Alesund. Fall in love with the Art Nouveau architecture of this historic city, which is surrounded by a ring of rocky islets, enchanting fjord inlets and majestic mountains. It lies anchored opposite Giske, the home island of Rollo, the great Viking chieftain renowned for his many Nordic expeditions to Normandy.

The fjords region , the highlight of your odyssey, is approaching. Beneath a misty sky, you will see the imposing dark rock walls of these natural wonders, whose calm waters were explored by Viking drakkars almost ten centuries ago. These geological treasures will immerse you in a universe that is as inhospitable as it is captivating. Hellesylt and its impressive cliffs with their vertiginous waterfalls; Olden and its closeness to the Jostedalsbreen National Park, which is home to the Briksdal Glacier , one of the last ice caps  in Europe; Lysefjorden and its mythical Preikestolen , a majestic pulpit-shaped cliff: these all offer a unique, stunning and unforgettable experience.

You will now set sail south for the historic and wild southern tip of Norway. In Stavanger, plunge into the fantastic universe of the legendary and emblematic Vikings, who were explorers and traders but also pirates. Here, an immersion into the Iron Age awaits; you will discover the ancestral traditions of these larger-than-life characters as you visit a reconstructed traditional village or emblematic sites. Then, in Arendal , once known as the Venice of the North because of its many canals, you may take the time to contemplate this intact and preserved immense space, composed of conifer forests and long pebble beaches ; these bear testimony to the retreat of a huge glacier, around 12,000 years ago, which left an enormous amount of rock behind.

For its grand finale, your enchanting journey will end in Oslo , the Norwegian capital, a city buzzing with singular energy.

The Raet National Park, the only protected area on the eastern coast of Norway, is not far away; here, you will fall in love with its raw nature, with silver and emerald reflections, dotted with immense coniferous forests and long pebble beaches.

And, for sports enthusiasts, the Holmenkollen district with its Ski museum and famous ski jump offer the most stunning, all-encompassing view of the city.

View all excursions

Giske & Godoy islands

Giske & Godoy islands

From the pier, you will start the tour with a short panoramic city tour through the Art Nouveau district of Alesund. The city's architectural character is in fact the result of a catastrophe - the great fire in 1904 and those young architects who participated in the rebuilding of the city were inspired by the Art Nouveau style.

Then you will drive up to Mount Aksla from where you have a beautiful view of the city, the islands and the Sunnmore Mountains.

Leaving the city you will drive through some of the world's largest undersea tunnels connecting the islands with the mainland. Today the approximately 6,300 inhabitants have a 'ferry-free connection' with the rest of Norway. To reach the islands you must traverse bridges and undersea tunnels, the longest being 2.5 miles. Reach Giske Island , which had a unique position during the Viking period.

The famous Gange - Rolv, or Rollo, was born on Giske. This great warrior conquered Normandie in 911 and became the ancestor of William the Conqueror, sire to the English Royal Family. The old marble church at Giske was built as a family chapel for one of most powerful families. The church is built in the Norman style and is a typical product of the architecture prior to 1200. In 1756 the church was restored. The local artist Jacob S. Giskegaard created the new interior including a new pulpit, and a new alter piece.

Continue your visit proceeding to Godoy Island and Alnes village located on the seaside. You will see a typical fishing village with a well-preserved and picturesque architecture. Its main attraction is its lighthouse . You will get the opportunity to climb up its stairs (87 steps) to enjoy a beautiful look-out to the Atlantic Ocean and the surroundings islands.

After this visit, you will return to your ship.

  • For this excursion, we recommend you wear comfortable shoes. Appropriate dress is recommended to enter religious sites (shoulders and knees must be covered). Please note the church may be visited from exterior only due to ecumenical services.

City walk & Art Nouveau museum

City walk & Art Nouveau museum

Ålesund, the largest town on the northwest coast of Norway, has a spectacular setting: stretching over three islands, near the ocean and backdropped by impressive mountain-peaks. The town centre was destroyed by a fire in 1904, but rebuilt shortly after in the characteristic Art Nouveau architectural style of the period. Today Ålesund has a population of approximately 40,000, but the town centre is relatively small and easy to cover on foot.

From the pier, you will start on foot with a visit to the Art Nouveau museum , located in the old pharmacy building. The museum provides interesting insight into the fire of 1904 and the creative Art Nouveau period.

After your visit, you will continue your walking tour. Your guide will put particular emphasis on presenting the importance of fisheries in Norway's biggest fish export harbour and, of course, you will be shown a multitude of examples of the picturesque Art Nouveau style that has made Ålesund famous.

The tour will continue uphill to the quaint little park at the foot of mount Aksla . Here, you will find exotic trees and plants as well as a memorial stone dedicated to the German emperor Wilhelm II, for whom the main street in town is named after. Furthermore, you will see the statue of the Viking "Gange-Rolf" who sailed from Ålesund to what is today Normandy (France), named after the Norwegian settlers. From the park, you could choose to continue to ascend mount Aksla, where your will be rewarded for your efforts with a spectacular view . Or you could wander about in the park or just sit and have a rest before the return to the pier and your ship.

  • This tour involves approximately 2 miles (3 km) of walking over even, paved and cobblestone surfaces with inclines. We recommend you wear comfortable shoes and protect yourself from the rain. This tour will operate in all weather conditions. A parent must accompany children under the age of 16. The tour is limited to 50 participants.

Alesund by e-bike

Alesund by e-bike

Don your helmet, hop on your e-bike, and set off to discover hand-picked highlights in this enchanting city!

E-biking is just like traditional cycling, but with less pedaling thanks to the bike’s electric motor. After a full briefing, your guide will lead the way as you cruise into the streets. Glide around the heart of colorful Alesund , which is renowned for its unique Art Nouveau style. Hear the story of the fire that destroyed the town in 1904 and admire the intricate façades of the buildings that rose from the ashes, embellished with dragons and flowers, and crowned by a forest of spires and turrets. Make the most of your bike’s motor and head up to a viewpoint on Mount Aksla . From here, soak up a breathtaking vista spanning Ålesund, the surrounding mountains, the sparkling fjords, and the distant Sunnmore Alps.

  • An e-bike and helmet will be provided. Participants are required to have previously ridden a normal bicycle. The excursion involves 2 ½-hour cycling. Participants must be at least 4’9” tall (150 cm) and weigh under 242 pounds (110 kgs). Pregnant women, those with back problems, and children under age 12 are not permitted. We recommend you wear a wind/waterproof jacket, flat shoes, and sunglasses.

Hellesylt kayak experience

Hellesylt kayak experience

This trip is suitable for everyone who wants to spend a few hours on the fjord and enjoy the feeling of a good kayaking outing. A perfect half-day activity that suits the whole family.

Start your trip from the kayaking base in Hellesylt. After a safety introduction, outfitting of the kayak and some paddle instructions, you will be ready to set out in the fjord and explore its wildlife. Follow the shoreline out from Hellesylt and have good chances to see eagles, porpoises and otters. The guide will tell you stories about the mountain farms in the area and the mountain Åkerneset, which is on the precipice of falling into the fjord.

  • Tour operation is subject to weather conditions. The minimum age to participate is 13 years old and children must be accompanied by a parent. The kayaks are double kayaks. We recommend you to wear comfortable clothing and flat shoes with rubber soles. This tour is conducted in English only. Participants should be in good physical conditions and able to swim. This tour is not recommended for persons suffering from back problems.

Geirangerfjord cruise

Geirangerfjord cruise

On the scenic cruise from Hellesylt, you will discover the scenery of Geirangerfjord, which has attracted travellers for over a century, and for good reason. The fjord is like a blue ribbon carved into a mountainous landscape, providing visitors with access to a remote corner of Norway. Geirangerfjord has been added to the UNESCO’s World Heritage List due to the breathtaking scenery and has been described as “the world’s most beautiful fjord”.

Take this opportunity to get closer to the fjord by leisurely gliding through the dramatic landscape and feel the presence of the towering mountains surrounding you. As you cruise through Geirangerfjord, a guide will tell you stories about the people who defy the up to 1500-metre tall mountains to make a living on the steep mountainsides and the small farmsteads clinging to its rocky ledges.

The tour will pass at the Seven Sisters Waterfall, where water pummels from a 300-metre steep cliffside down to the fjord below, before returning you safely back to the pier.

  • We recommend you wear flat shoes with rubber soles. The boat is privatised for PONANT guests.

Briksdal Glacier

Briksdal Glacier

Briksdal glacier is a part of the Jostedal glacier ice field, which is the largest glacier on the European mainland. The wild glacier is a fantastic work of Nature. Its slope plunges from a height of 3,937 feet (1,200 m) down to the lush, narrow Briksdal Valley. Briksdalsbreen Glacier lies at the end of enchanting Oldedalen valley.

Board your motor coach and start the tour. The trip through Oldedalen valley to Briksdal glacier is an amazing symphony of scenic splendours. From wild flowers to awe-inspiring mountains that are reflected in crystal clear lake waters, to great waterfalls that cascade from vertical mountainsides.

Your motor coach will stop at the mountain lodge, and from the lodge it is about 1.8 mile (3 km), a 45-minute walk on a gravel road up to the glacier . During your walk, enjoy the view onto the gigantic glacier.

If you don't want to walk that far, another option is to be driven by cars (7 seats in each) from the lodge, up to a parking lot which is a 10-minute walk from the glacier. Please note that you pay directly on the site for the transfer by vehicle. We will not be able to pre-book this service and unfortunately during the high season, vehicles are not always running.

Using the same way to get back to the lodge, you will have some more opportunities to take pictures walking down the path. At the lodge, enjoy a snack including tea, coffee and pastries, and some time at leisure in the well-stocked souvenir shop which will make your trip to Briksdal memorable.

  • This moderate excursion involves 1 h 30 of walking (3,1 miles) on uneven and sometimes slippery terrain and gravel paths. We recommend you to wear comfortable good walking shoes, sunhat and sunglasses, a warm jacket and a waterproof layer.

From fjord to sky

From fjord to sky

From the pier, drive to Stryn Lake. What makes Lovatnet so beautiful is the green color that comes from the melt water from the glaciers that lies on the mountain peaks around. The lake has an area of 10.4 square kilometers, and is 52 meters above sea level. Lovatnet has multiple streams from the Jostedals glacier and drains at Loelva to the fjord.

After a photostop, continue to Loen. Leaving the buses, board the new cable car (inaugurated 2017) taking you up to mount Hoven, 1011 metres above the sea – around 200 metres above the tree line in this part of Norway.

In the footsteps of Stavanger's past

In the footsteps of Stavanger's past

Stavanger and its surroundings have played a leading role in Norway's maritime history for centuries, from the time when the Viking kings battled in Hafrsfjord, through to the period of the “white sails”, the steamships and to today's modern super tankers.

From the pier, drive passing rich agricultural countryside before arriving at Ullandhaug, with its reconstructed farmhouses from the Iron Age and an introduction into life during that time. In one of the low houses with turf roof, learn more about the living conditions around the year 500. Learn how Norwegians lived their life at this time - a local guide will demonstrate how they made flour or wove their clothes.

After the visit, re-board you coach and drive toward a viewpoint nearby Ullandhaug hill, and enjoy a magnificent view over Hafrsfjord , where the Viking king Harald Haarfagre (the Fair-haired) defeated in 872 the last of the regional princes, and founded the Kingdom of Norway by uniting the 29 small kingdoms under one crown.

Here you will have a photo stop at the Sword in Rock , a monument made of three Viking swords more than 29 feet (9 m) high forced into the ground, recently raised to commemorate this event.

To the east, the fertile farmland of Jæren with the Ryfylke Mountains forms the background. Before your return to the ship, you will have the option of strolling through Old Stavanger and the charming, picturesque and well preserved wooden houses in narrow lanes, which date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. The houses were originally built for seamen, craftsmen and businessmen. Old Stavanger is today considered unique and its rehabilitation and conservation is the city's most important project.

  • This tour involves walking on muddy paths and some inclines at the Iron Age Farm. We recommend you to wear comfortable walking shoes. Should you choose to visit Old Stavanger at the end of the tour, you will return to your ship independently.

Utstein Monastery & music recital

Utstein Monastery & music recital

Utstein Monastery is situated on Mosteroy Island. Up to 1992, going to Mosteroy Island had to be done by boat. Today, the drive is via an underwater tunnel almost 3 miles (5 km) long that goes down to nearly 700 feet (210 m).

On Mosteroy Island, the land is fertile and peaceful with grazing sheep and cows. Wonderful green colours, in all the splendid shades which only soft sea air can create, surround you on your way to Utstein Monastery, the best-preserved monastery built in Norway, and you can easily understand why the Viking kings chose to settle here.

From the 13th century onwards, Augustine monks lived here in the peaceful countryside. The Reformation in 1537 put an end to monastery life, and the king's vassals took over the property. In 1937, Restoration works began that ended in 1965.

After the guided visit, the tour ends with a short music recital in the chapel (15 to 20 minutes). One cannot but feel the peace in these surroundings. The old beeches are still standing in the garden, spreading their great crowns over the group of old buildings.

After the visit and recital, return to the pier and your ship in Stavanger via the same route.

  • This tour involves approximately 25 steps to negotiate at the monastery.

Tvedestrand & Naes Iron work museum

Tvedestrand & Naes Iron work museum

From the pier, board your coach for the 30-minute drive via the main road to idyllic Nesgrenda, where Naes Ironworks Museum is situated .

The museum is almost completely intact and very well preserved, consisting of buildings, machinery and equipment which date back to the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.

After a guided walk through the museum and a stop for refreshments, reboard your coach for a drive to Tvedestrand centre. Enjoy a guided walk through the picturesque little village and perhaps take a picture of Norway’s most narrow house!

After the visit, enjoy some time at leisure before re-boarding your coach.

The drive back to Arendal will follow the North Sea Route scenic road, with fantastic views of the coastline and the ocean.

  • Please note the order of the visits may be reversed. This tour involves approximately 0.6 mile (1 km) of walking on almost flat terrain.

Coastal hike at Hove

Coastal hike at Hove

From the pier, board your coach for the 20-minute drive to Hove.

On the southern part of the island of Tromøy, only a short ride from Arendal, there is a beautiful nature area called Hove. This recreational area is part of a protected moraine that lies along the southern coast and the whole area has been adapted for walks with rest areas along the shore. There are numerous paths which stretch from Hove to Alve, along Spornes beach, consisting of boulders and rocks and sand, when the sea permits.

Join your guide for a wonderful hike along the shores . The trip from Hove camping along the coast and back on the countryside is 6 km (3.75 miles). Spornes beach is situated on the south side of Tromøy, close to Hove and you will pass by it on your walk.

Arriving at the end of the trail, board your coach again for a scenic drive back to Arendal and your ship.

  • This hiking tour includes 6 km (3.75 miles) of walking on mostly flat and gravel paths, which can be dirty depending on the weather conditions. Wear hiking shoes or boots and dress in waterproof.

The tour begins with a ride though the harbour where you will see and hear about the harbour sceneries and activities. At Alvsborg Fortress, accelerate speed and navigate to one of the seal colonies in the area close to Vinga lighthouse. The seal colony consists of 20 to 40 animals. • Participants must wear warm wind-proof clothes and flat sneaker shoes. This tour can be cancelled on short notice by the RIB guide if the weather turns bad. You will meet your guide on the quay and leave Gothenburg for a short trip North.

You will pass through the historic little town of Kungälv , with its impressive ruins, including Bohus Fortress , which dates back to the 14th century. You will continue through the town of Stenungsund , which, along with the islands Tjörn and Orust , are collectively called the "Best Coast". Those two large islands surrounded by many smaller islands, to the west of a forested mainland create an incomparable natural combination! The islands are connected through impressive bridges, the longest being the Tjörn Bridge, which streches across the Askerö Fjord. Here, a photo stop will be made.

Then, you will drive across the bridge and continue through the magnificent Tjörn landscape towards the old fishing village of Klädesholmen , where, in the 19th century, the foundations for a fish processing industry were formed. Lunch at the hotel.

After lunch, the excursion will continue by coach.

You will make your way through Norway’s sheer natural beauty to the Hardanger Juice and Cider Factory, located in the innermost part of the Hardanger Fjord at the Lekve fruit farm in Ulvik. Here you will have a guided tour of everything the farm offers. They make apple juice and cider, which has played an important role in the farm’s production since 2004. In 2009, it also began producing apple brandy. Hardanger Cider, the fairy-tale drink, is also on the menu and is still being made according to the old recipe, just using modern tools. You will get a chance to taste the produce as part of your visit.

Afterwards, you will return to the hotel for dinner.

Day 3 – Voss/Flåm/Bergen

Breakfast at the hotel and check-out.

You will leave the hotel in the morning by coach for a second day of exploration.

On leaving the Voss area, you will travel across several landscapes to reach Flåm. You will stop at the beautiful Tvindefoss waterfall, and also at Gudvangen at the head of the Næroyfjord, listed by UNESCO as the most beautiful fjord in the world. Flåm is 2 meters above sea level, situated in the Aurlandsfjord, a branch of the Sognefjord, and is 90 sea miles away from the North Sea. You will have some leisure time in this quiet village, before lunch in a local restaurant.

After lunch, your journey continues with the famous Flåm railway. The Flåm railway is one of the most interesting pieces of engineering in Norway. Only 20 kilometres long, it runs from sea-level Flåm station up to Myrdal with an altitude of 867 metres. You will be transferred to the Opus XVI Hotel 4* for dinner and an overnight stay.

In Bergen, which was founded in 1070 AD, you will start your guided tour of the city with a local guide at the fish market where you will enjoy lunch, and see the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Bryggen, the picturesque wharf that helped put Bergen at the centre of the Hanseatic League. Our Science Program has one goal: to increase your curiosity, knowledge and interest of the areas you are sailing to.

Our expedition ships serve as the perfect platform for scientific research; with access to remote regions of the world and onboard experts, we can provide invaluable data to the scientific community—with help from our guests!

We invite our guests to participate in science activities, developing a greater understanding of the region in which they travel, becoming true ambassadors, and returning home to champion the protection of our planet's most fragile ecosystems.

Examples of Scientific Research Onboard

Seabird Distribution with the Antarctic Site Inventory  — Surveys throughout the Antarctic Peninsula help scientists understand how seabirds are using different habitats and provide valuable information about their life cycles.

Cloud Observations with the Globe Program  — By observing and recording cloud cover timed to NASA satellite fly-overs, guests can help scientists understand how surface and air temperature are affected by cloud cover, and how clouds will respond to a changing climate.

Happywhale  — We assist in tracking individual whales throughout our world’s oceans by harnessing the power of whale watching enthusiasts - our guests - expanding our scientific knowledge of their behavior and distribution.

Sea Leopard Project  — A non-profit study aimed at a better understanding of the behavior, ecology, and population dynamics of leopard seals on the Antarctic Peninsula to promote their conservation and safe human-seal interactions.

Fjord Phyto  — Study phytoplankton to better understand how they respond to water temperature changes in the polar regions, providing a key to help mitigate future environmental impacts.

Your cruise booking information will also detail any requirements applicable to your holiday.

12 Themed Cruises You Should Have On Your Radar In 2024

T aking a cruise is an experience unlike anything else. Days at sea on a ship full of entertainment and relaxation make for a fantastic vacation. But what if you want even more from your cruise? A theme might be what's missing. In addition to all the usual cruise experiences, themed cruises allow fans of a particular artist, lifestyle, hobby (or even animal), to celebrate their passion on the high seas with activities, events, surprises, and sometimes special guests.

There are dozens of themed cruises on offer each year, usually hosted by major cruise lines like Norwegian , Carnival, and Royal Caribbean. But don't let their numbers fool you. According to  Business Insider , themed cruises are rapidly climbing in popularity, and some trips are selling out in record time. That means it's important to find your dream-themed cruise and reserve your tickets as early as possible.

Fortunately, even if they're sold out, most themed cruises will let you join a waiting list, so there's still hope! Here are 12 themed cruises that will set sail in 2024 and are well worth boarding, either now or the next time they hit the high seas.

The Emo's Not Dead Cruise

If you truly know it's not a phase, the Emo's Not Dead Cruise is perfect for you. Gather with fellow emo fans for four days (and nights) of concerts, activities, and even a private party at Great Stirrup Kay in the Bahamas. Over a dozen bands will perform, including Yellowcard, Senses Fail, and Armor for Sleep. Alongside themed activities like a masquerade ball, cruisegoers can also enjoy surprisingly cheerful activities like a bellyflop competition in the ship's pool.

The first Emo's Not Dead cruise was in 2022. Cruisegoer and emo fan TheReelChris shared highlights on  YouTube , calling it "EPIC." Fans in the comments section agree, with Schecterplayer92 adding, "This was one of the best experiences of my life." With a killer lineup and entertaining activities scheduled, it seems like Emo's Not Dead 2024 will also be a rad experience. The cruise will be hosted on the Norwegian Pearl, leaving from Miami on February 26 and returning on March 1, 2024. But what would an emo-related cruise be without a little sadness? Unfortunately, the cruise is already sold out. If you're interested, you can  sign up for the waiting list  and hope.

Meow Meow Cruise

Some of us know that no matter how great a vacation might be, cats would make it even better. Meow Meow Cruise has solved that problem. While guests unfortunately aren't allowed to bring their own furry friends aboard Virgin Voyages' Scarlet Lady, the four-day cruise will give them their feline fix in plenty of other ways.

Activities include cat-themed trivia and a scavenger hunt. But the best part may be communing with fellow cat people (many of whom stroll around the ship wearing cat ears). You'll also be able to mingle with real cats -- one of 2024's ports of call is Key West, where you'll find the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum and its community of about 60 friendly polydactyl kitties, many of them descended from one of the author's own pets.

It's hard to find reviews for Meow Meow Cruise, but the fact that this themed cruise has been going on annually since 2015 speaks for itself. The 2024 Meow Meow Cruise sets sail from Miami on February 21, with a return date of February 25. Tickets are still available, but to be sure you don't miss out, consider booking right now.

In My Cruise Era

Sure, cruises are great — and cruising is a multi-billion dollar industry — but is anything more popular than Taylor Swift? For those who can't imagine anyone saying "no" to that question, there's no better cruise than In My Cruise Era. While not officially affiliated with Taylor Swift, this themed cruise is a passionate fan homage. Swifties will be able to dress up in their favorite Taylor-inspired looks, exchange friendship bracelets, perform their idol's songs during karaoke sessions, and more. We're also guessing there will be of lots impromptu song breaks throughout the ship from Taylor's extensive catalog.

Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas will host this cruise, which sets sail from Miami on October 21, 2024 -- which, as People Magazine points out, is one day after the Eras Tour will be in the city. Fans lucky enough to attend the concert can continue their Taylor euphoria for four more days on the high seas. Since this is a new themed cruise, there aren't any reviews, but based on the positive fan vibes from Eras Tour concerts and movie viewings, among other events, we're guessing it's going to be a great time for Swifties. Swifties must agree, since the cruise is already sold out. Cancellations do happen, though, so hopeful fans can join the waiting list.  Contact the cruise's organizers to sign up.

Disney's Halloween On The High Seas

Go on just about any cruise-related blog or website and you'll see that Disney Cruise Line's Halloween-themed cruise, officially called Halloween on the High Seas, is a popular favorite. As you probably expect from Disney, this themed cruise is perfect for a family vacation , so it's not too scary. The cruise is hosted on multiple Disney Cruise Line ships, and each one is decorated with the care and attention to detail you'll find in most Disney-related enterprises. The Pumpkin Tree is the highlight of the decor, with pumpkins that eventually appear on its branches and transform into lit and unlit jack o'lanterns.

Halloween on the High Seas also features Halloween activities (including a trick-or-treating night) and exclusive Halloween-themed desserts. Disney cruises in general are known for their opportunities to meet the studio's beloved characters, and during the Halloween on the High Seas cruises, some of those characters are in costume. Notably, Disney Cruise Line's official site tells us, Minnie Mouse, Daisy Duck, and Clarabelle Cow will be dressed as the Sanderson Sisters -- who wouldn't want to see that?

This magical mixture of whimsy, fun, and exclusive opportunities is the perfect way to cast a spell on Disney fans of all ages. Luckily, Halloween on the High Seas is held during a number of different times in September and October, so you and your family should be able to find a place on board!

The Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise

Sure, Hallmark Channel Christmas movies might be a little on the cheesy side, but let's be honest: lots of us dream of being in one in real life. You can get a little of the real-life Hallmark movie experience by visiting some of the movies' filming locations , but now there's a way to have an even more immersive experience: The Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise.

Passengers will get to meet Hallmark Channel movie stars, attend panels and photo ops, and get to see a new Hallmark Christmas movie before its world premiere. Maybe best of all, passengers can take part in lots of Hallmark Christmas movie-inspired activities, including tree lighting and cookie decorating -- all while wearing their favorite ugly Christmas sweaters.

2024 is the first year of the Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise. It was originally intended to be just one cruise, but a second one was added after the first one sold out. As of now, two Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruises are scheduled for 2024. Both go from Miami to the Bahamas and back and last four days in November. ... And both are sold out. But Christmas is a time of miracles, so if a Hallmark Channel Christmas experience on the high seas sounds like your dream come true, sign up for the waiting list as soon as you can!

Hurtigruten Northern Lights Cruises

Themed cruises are often about fandoms and hobbies. But Norway-based cruise line Hurtigruten offers a themed cruise that's about something even bigger: the Northern Lights . There are several Northern Lights-themed cruises out there, including some luxurious options by Cunard. Unfortunately, the Northern Lights aren't always visible, but Hurtigruten stands out by offering a Northern Lights Promise for cruises scheduled between September 26 and March 31 and lasting longer than 11 days. If the Northern Lights aren't visible during your cruise, they'll give you another one. So if you're serious about seeing the Aurora Borealis, this is the company to choose.

The Northern Lights are the focus of Hurtigruten's eponymous cruises, but there are also other things to do on board, including scientific lectures and photography lessons. There are excursions, too -- notably a dog sledding option. Passengers who've taken one of Hurtigruten's cruises unanimously praise the stunning fjords and landscapes you can admire from the ship and during excursions, not to mention their experiences of seeing the Northern Lights. Some warn that the ships aren't as luxurious or modern as many other cruise ships, primarily because Hurtigruten's ships are also functional vessels intended to transport and deliver mail to various points on the Norwegian coast. Still,  Cruise Critic reviewers like cmolaison praise the friendly crew, the surprising level of comfort, and the "stunning vistas" you'll see, saying he and his family "highly recommend" taking a Hurtigruten cruise.

Cruise & Crop Crafting Cruises

If the perfect vacation for you is a combination of R&R and crafting, you're in luck! There are several crafting-themed cruises. One of the most popular is organized by Cruise & Crop, with ships around the world hosting different crafting- and arts-themed trips. This makes them the most accessible themed cruises on our list, with different price ranges, departure points, itineraries, and ports of call. One thing all crafting cruises have in common, though, is groups of like-minded people exploring their creativity amid the other joys of cruising.

For instance, one of Crop & Cruise's 2024 offerings is a Mexican Riviera cruise aboard Royal Caribbean's Navigator of the Seas, featuring scrapbooking and other papercraft classes taught by artist Barb Warne. The ship departs from Los Angeles on April 19, returning April 26. Many Cruise & Crop cruises sell out quickly, so if this idea has sparked both your wanderlust and your creativity, be sure to check their list of 2024 cruises and reserve as soon as you can.

Star Trek: The Cruise

For seven days and nights every year, thousands of Star Trek fans gather to be a part of a fandom extravaganza at sea. Star Trek: The Cruise is an experience that features celebrities aboard (2024's guests include LeVar Burton and Wil Wheaton, among many others), costume and cosplay events, and lots of fun activities.

But what makes Star Trek: The Cruise truly unique is that audience participation is very much encouraged. Passengers and celebrity guests are all considered the crew of one great, big, intergalactic vessel. Passengers get to interact with the guest stars in events like karaoke battles, and stars share parts of their earthly lives with Q&A sessions and even glimpses at other projects they may be involved in.

The first Star Trek: The Cruise was held in 2017 and since then it's been a fan favorite. Star Wars and cruising aficionado Aaron Bossig writes on  Trek Movie.com that many fans go on the cruise every year, and proudly wear t-shirts from the previous ones. He calls Star Trek: The Cruise "an extra special convention experience." 2024's edition will be held on the Mariner of the Seas, departing from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on February 22 and returning on February 29.

Literature Festival At Sea

Once a year, aboard the legendary Queen Mary 2, passengers can mingle with writers, poets, journalists, and critics in a full-blown literary festival in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Literature Festival at Sea invites writers in all genres to host round table discussions, participate in Q&As revolving around their work and areas of expertise, host workshops, and converse with passengers.

Whether passengers want to participate as much as possible or just attend a few events, the Festival seems to be an excellent addition to a typical Queen Mary 2 voyage. On TripAdvisor , passenger Artemis C writes of her experience at a previous Literature Festival at Sea that "the whole week was a joy".

2024's lineup features crime novelists, journalists, historians, and more, for what's sure to be a fascinating week of discussion and discovery. If you'd like to combine an elegant transatlantic cruise and a literary experience, 2024's Literature Festival at Sea will take place from November 13-20, departing from Southampton, U.K., and arriving in New York. Cunard has also launched an Australian Literature Festival at Sea, scheduled from December 11-16, 2024, on the Queen Elizabeth, which departs from and returns to Sydney.

Many cruise lines are proud of their food offerings. Some cruises feature dishes created by world-famous chefs, and others even host food and wine festivals. But no culinary cruise event seems quite as, well, fun, as Chefs Making Waves. This culinary-themed cruise will set sail for the first time in 2024. Onboard will be a number of beloved celebrity chefs, including Anne Burrell and the Cake Boss himself, Buddy Valastro. Cooking demos and, of course, food tastings of all kinds (including sit-down meals, desserts, and street food) are on the menu. Best of all, Chefs Making Waves is an all-inclusive cruise, so everyone can eat and drink without having to pay extra!

There will be all of the usual cruise-related fun, from swimming to excursions, to help you work up an appetite. There will also be unique games, with some of the chefs participating in events like bingo and a celebrity chef sing-off. If this sounds like an awesome cruise, you're not the only one who feels that way. Chefs Making Waves will take place from March 25-29, departing from Miami with excursions in Great Stirrup Cay and Nassau, Bahamas ... and it's already sold out. But you can still  sign up for the waiting list . With a little luck, you'll be able to enjoy this delicious, themed cruise experience.

Soul Train Cruise

Imagine a festival with a lineup featuring some of the best soul and R&B acts of all time. Now imagine it's on a relaxing cruise ship. This dream is actually reality -- it's called the Soul Train Cruise. The popular themed cruise will be celebrating its 11th year in 2024 and the lineup is on fire. Dozens of groups and artists will perform, including The Temptations, Boyz II Men, and En Vogue. Passengers can also learn how to dance like people did back in the old school days of Soul Train's TV show, with lessons from some of the show's actual dancers. There will also be wine tastings, Q&A's, comedy shows, and a lot more.

With all of this on offer, it's no surprise that the Soul Train Cruise is sold out. But sign up on the waiting list and keep your calendar free from January 27-February 3, and you may get lucky. If you do, the cruise leaves from Fort Lauderdale, with ports of call in Tortola (British Virgin Islands) and St. Maarten.

The Gothic Cruise

The Gothic Cruise is an annual event held on an ordinary cruise ship. Goths mingle with "norms" but have their own private events on board, mostly DJ sets and concerts. There's also a masquerade ball, with Goths decked out in their finest Victorian-style garb ... as long as it meets ship safety requirements, that is. The cruise's website specifies that simulated weapons aren't allowed and notes that hoop skirts are fine for the ball but not in the ship's dining areas, "due to the close proximity of the tables". And yet, the Goth community thrives on these cruises -- and even gains norm fans along the way.

In a Porthole Magazine article about the Gothic Cruise, longtime attendee Spike Pittman says that many mainstream passengers are wary of the Goths at first, "But by the end they're begging to get into our private events." Some even book their future cruises to coincide with the Gothic Cruise, even if they don't plan on attending every event.

The Gothic Cruise has been held since 1989. Cruising doesn't seem very Goth, but in the end, the article points out, it comes down to what all themed cruises offer: a sense of community (in this case, one that often stays up all night and sleeps during the day). If this moves your little black heart, the 2024 Gothic Cruise will be held on the Norwegian Escape (but book through the Gothic Cruise's website for private event access), departing from Orlando on March 2, and returning March 9.

Why Royal Caribbean isn't going all in on massive cruise ships despite the wild success of its new Icon of the Seas

  • Royal Caribbean International has unveiled a swath of giant cruise ships over the past few years.
  • Its CEO said its new world's largest ship, the  Icon of the Seas,  is its "best-selling product" ever.
  • But the cruise line doesn't plan on going all in on megaships forever.

Insider Today

Earlier this year, guests at Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day at CocoCay private island were the first to revel at the historic sight of the world's largest cruise ships, Icon of the Seas and Wonder of the Seas, docked side-by-side.

The vessels towered over their communal dock like skyscrapers, casting a dark shadow over their relatively tiny shared pier.

Together, they can accommodate about 19,250 people.

At 1,196 feet long and weighing 248,663 gross tons, the Icon of the Seas is a sight to behold. When it launched in late January, the giant vessel upstaged its eight-foot shorter predecessor, the Wonder of the Seas , as the world's biggest.

At the time, it was no surprise: Every new Royal Caribbean ship seemed to dethrone another Royal Caribbean ship for this title.

But not for long.

The company's smaller ships, important for diverse trips, are aging.

The company is synonymous with its mega vessels. And they've been mega-hits: Michael Bayley, the president and CEO of Royal Caribbean International, has repeatedly called the Icon of the Seas the "best-selling product" in the company's history.

Related stories

Royal Caribbean is set to launch four more megaships by 2028 — representing about a third of its total fleet. So far, most of the megaships' scheduled sailings are in the Caribbean.

The other 21 smaller vessels tend to have more specialized itineraries, Patrick Scholes, the managing director of lodging and leisure-equity research at Truist Securities, told Business Insider.

Given their trimmer sizes, these vessels can operate more sailings outside the Caribbean , which often reel in high fares and customer satisfaction for the company, Jay Schneider, the chief product-innovation officer at Royal Caribbean Group, told reporters in January. Think of the Mediterranean, Alaska, and South Pacific itineraries — the latter are especially important as the cruise line continues to ramp up business in Asia.

But these destination-flexible cruise liners are aging as Royal Caribbean continues to unveil their giant counterparts. The company launched its four oldest Vision-class ships, with a maximum 2,730-guest capacity, between 1996 and 1998.

They're tiny and old compared to the 2-month-old, 7,600-guest Icon of the Seas .

Looking ahead, Royal Caribbean plans to return to the basics: smaller cruise ships.

Despite the cruise line's success with mega-vessels, Schneider said Royal Caribbean is now considering a new class of ships that would start "smaller" — noting that he was "careful to say small, but less-than-large."

"The reality is, families want to go on vacations not just in the Western and Eastern Caribbean where a ship like Icon can get into," Schneider said. "They want to stay with our brand and journey to different destinations that require more versatility in ship size."

Desirable destinations such as French Polynesia and Venice, Italy, have limited visiting cruises , including size restrictions, to curb pollution and overcrowding. But, as Schneider said, small-vessel-enabled specialized itineraries are also important to travelers.

Giant mass-market floating resorts also often attract first-time cruisers, enamored by their family-friendly water parks and Broadway-style shows. But after a few good vacations at sea, these no-longer-new-to-cruising guests might start craving quieter ships or more bespoke itineraries.

"Alaska cruises tend not to be the first-time cruiser," Scholes told BI. "I don't really see Icon of the Seas doing a Norwegian Fjord or Alaska trip."

Plus, "there's probably only so much demand for these giant ships," Scholes said.

Royal Caribbean has already succeeded in the first part: bringing in a swath of new cruisers with its megaships. Now, it has to retain them.

Haugesund - Norway

Home of the Vikings! Today we explore this new and exciting port. Haugesund, is carved into the southwest of the country’s marvellous fjord coastline, between the larger cities of Stavanger and Bergen. Once home to the Viking kings it comes rich with History including Norway’s striking obelisk national monument, Haraldshaugen which was erected in 1872 to mark 1,000 years since the country’s unification. Haraldshaugen is believed to be the burial place of the country’s first king, Harald Fairhair.

Flam - Norway

Today you will arrive in Flam. Nestled right at the end of one of the branches of the 205 km Sognefjord – Norway’s longest and deepest fjord, here you will find Flam. Flam is a small port surrounded by steep mountains and epitomises the nordic culture with its relaxed atmosphere, friendly people and spectacular views. After enjoying all the location has to offer you will them rejoin the ship and set sail early evening up the fjords enjoying the beautiful scenery of Aurlandsfjord and Sognefjord.

Please Note:- As stated Flam is a small Port and it is not always possible for ships to dock. There is the potential this will be a tendered Port. Do not worry this location has some spectacular natural beauty that can still be experienced from the ship. It is also a good opportunity to enjoy some activities on ship that are usually busier or may have special offers on as it is a port day.

Olden - Norway

Olden is blessed with a beautiful fjordic coastline, towering mountains and the biggest glacier on mainland Europe, Jostedalsbreen. There’s easy access to both the Briksdal and Kjenndalen glaciers, plunging dramatically into the valleys below. Crystal-clear Lake Oldevatnet is set among steep mountains and roaring waterfalls. In a nutshell, it’s Norwegian nature at its finest. After a morning off ship, its time to rejoin for an afternoon departure taking in the sights of Innvikfjorden and Nordfjord as you sit back and enjoy a drink from the comfort of the ship.

Stavanger - Norway

Stavanger is our last port of call and a perfect end to the Norwegian coastline. Once a Viking stronghold, the city is famed for the beautiful wooden homes that dominate its historic centre. The cruise ship will dock just a 10-minute walk from the city centre, so you’ll be able to make the most of your time in this picturesque destination.

Homeward Bound
