Tour de Pologne 2023. Jak to było z tym finiszem? Mówią Majka i Kwiatkowski

Rafał Majka wygrał etap Tour de Pologne, Michał Kwiatkowski przymierza się do wygrania całego wyścigu. Dwóch najlepszych polskich kolarzy jest w grze o podium i zwycięstwo, pokazuje się kibicom, ale przebieg dzisiejszego finiszu będą musieli sobie wyjaśnić.

Rafał Majka i Michał Kwiatkowski starli się w pojedynku o etapowe zwycięstwo trzeciego dnia Tour de Pologne. Dwójka walczyła na pagórkowatym finiszu w Dusznikach-Zdroju, a zwycięsko wyszedł z tego pojedynku, nieco niespodziewanie, Majka.

Zawodnik UAE Team Emirates triumfował przed liderem wyścigu Matejem Mohoricem i Kwiatkowskim. Temu ostatniemu Majka na finałowej prostej przeszkodził zmieniając tor jazdy, ale sędziowie nie zdecydowali się na żadne kroki przeciwko zwycięzcy.

Majka na konferencji prasowej był w bardzo dobrym nastroju i cieszył się ze zwycięstwa, pierwszego od ponad roku.

Przyjechałem tu dla swojej rodziny, fanów, ludzi którzy są wciąż ze mną. Cieszy mnie kolarstwo. Nogi wciąż są na swoim miejscu, nadal umiem się wspinać na góry co widzieliście na Tour de France i po prostu cieszę się tym

Mamy za sobą znakomity Tour de France na którym pracowałem dla Tadeja Pogacara i Adama Yatesa, a teraz tutaj wykorzystałem szansę na sięgnięcie po etapowe zwycięstwo. Jestem bardzo szczęśliwy z tego powodu i myślę, że zasłużyłem na to. Na wczorajszym etapie nie wyszło, złapali mnie na jakieś 200 metrów przed metą i byłem tym rozczarowany. Dziś miałem dobre nogi i ten sprint w końcówce wyszedł mi naprawdę nieźle.

Pytany o przebieg finiszu, Majka zaznaczył, że nie ma sobie nic do zarzucenia, choć na ostatnich 200 metrach, gdy kolarze z wąskiej alejki wyjechali na szeroką drogę, zaczynał sprint po lewej stronie, a kończył środkiem drogi, manewrem tym wyrzucając z najkrótszego toru jazdy Michała Kwiatkowskiego.

Przepraszam, ale nie widzę problemu. Zaatakowałem na 200 metrów do mety i jechałem swoje. Jeśli ktoś miałby nogi, to by mnie wyprzedził, tak jak Matej wyprzedził mnie wczoraj

– stwierdził.

Tu była strasznie szeroka droga. Ja po prostu patrzyłem w przód, nie patrzyłem czy jadę w lewo czy w prawo. Po prostu dałem z siebie wszystko. Zacząłem sprint 250 metrów przed metą. Nie mam sobie nic do zarzucenia

– powtórzył przed kamerami “TVP Sport”.

Kwiatkowski na mecie nie był szczęśliwy, ale nie protestował.

Gratulacje dla Rafała, że miał mocne nogi i wygrał. Wiadomo, że chciałem zwyciężyć, więc na pewno nie będę w jakiejś niesamowitej euforii po mecie. Na odprawie rozmawialiśmy, o tym, żeby kilometr przed metą mieć kogoś, kto mnie pociągnie prawie do samej mety. Pavel Sivakov i cały zespół był ze mną od samego końca. Nie mogłem dla nich tego wykończyć, ale bardzo się starałem

Majka zrobił swoje, Kwiatkowski celuje w generalkę

Po trzech etapach Tour de Pologne nadal największe szanse na miejsce na podium ma czterech kolarzy: Majka, Kwiatkowski, Mohoric oraz João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates).

Mohoric zachował koszulkę lidera i ma 10 sekund przewagi nad Majką i Almeidą oraz 12 sekund przewagi nad Kwiatkowskim. Losy wyścigu powinien ułożyć przedostatni etap, czasówka w Katowicach. To rozdanie faworyzuje Almeidę i Kwiatkowskiego, nie Majkę czy Mohorica.

Wyścig jest wciąż otwarty. Jutro będzie mocno wiało, nie wiem czy wszyscy sobie poradzą z tym bocznym wiatrem. Wiadomo, że jest czasówka, na której można zrobić sporą różnicę i etap do Bielska, na którym na zmęczonej nodze można wygrywać nie będąc sprinterem

– wskazał “Kwiato”, który finisz w Bielsku-Białej wygrał już w 2018 roku.

Majka nie wiąże aż tak dużych nadziei z wynikiem w klasyfikacji generalnej.

Jeśli chodzi o klasyfikację generalną, to stawiamy tu raczej na João, który jest znakomity w jeździe na czas i któremu będziemy pomagać. Z kolei na sprinterskich etapach będziemy pracować na rzecz Pascala Ackermanna. Mamy na Tour de Pologne bardzo silny team i możemy próbować różnych taktyk. Ja miałem swoją szansę na sięgnięcie po etapowe zwycięstwo, wykorzystałem ją dobrze, a co będzie dalej to będzie

– wyjaśnił.

PREVIEW | Tour de Pologne 2023 stage 2 - First summit finish to open up GC battle

Preview . Stage 2 of the Tour de Pologne will be a key day for the overall classification. We will see the climbers and puncheurs in action and the overall classification will be played for.

Stage 2 in Pologne is a day of two very different halves. The 203 kilometers are mostly flat for the first two third of the day, but the race reaches it's southern border and the hilly terrain comes about. It may be the biggest chance to create differences ahead of the time-trial.

There are two categorized climbs in the lead up to the final ascent, they are 3.3 kilometers at 5.7% and 4.8 kilometers at 5.8% respectively. The latter one ends with 20 kilometers to go, all will be a warm-up to the final ascent to Karpacz.

The finish line is in the outskirts of town. It is an inconsistent one, 6.9Km at 5.2%, however there is a very different story when looking at the climb in detail. Inside town the riders find a 1.6Km section at 9.5% and the gradients go up to 15%, nasty ramps which can see explosive attacks and differences. There are a few flat bits, however it will be a difficult run to the line, one where both climbers and puncheurs can ride for the win.

The Weather

Western wind and with some strength. It can make for some tension throughout the day, the possibility of echelons is not too unlikely. Rain will also fall, but early in the day so it's not to expect that it will have a crucial influence on the day. In the final climb it should be covered but a crosswind, however the final meters should see a headwind.

The Favourites

INEOS - INEOS have five cards to play realistically. This is not exactly the type of stage where they can make good use of them, but if some have good legs the finale should see them on the attack. Geraint Thomas , Pavel Sivakov, Thymen Arensman and Laurens de Plus are all strong and proven climbers who are using the race to prepare for the Vuelta a Espana, whilst Michal Kwiatkowski had terrific climbing legs at the Tour de France and if he shows the same level he absolutely has the punch at the end that is necessary.

UAE - UAE are in a relatively similar position. Tim Wellens won't likely be in contention but the roads of Pologne suit him well, the team has Rafal Majka who may have a supporting role but racing at home will be motivated, whilst both João Almeida and Brandon McNulty both have a good punch if it comes down to a sprint, but in the climbing itself they will certainly be towards the front.

BORA - The German team have two cards to play. Sergio Higuita is one but I'd call it half a card, on his best day the Colombian will be a big favourite to win here, however he's been having a very inconsistent season and missed the Tour de France because of it, there's no knowing what version we'll see. Lennard Kämna will be the other, a contender for the GC, but an open punchy finale like this is also ideal for him.

Bahrain - Matej Mohoric finished the Tour de France in great form, it's unclear what legs he'll bring to Pologne but if he's willing to take on a week-long stage-race then he must not be fatigued. The climb isn't easy, but the best Mohoric can survive the steep part and then have a chance in a sprint. Damiano Caruso presents another possibility for Bahrain.

This is a stage where the mix of climbers and puncheurs is interesting, there's no rider or specific rider type who is a favourite, form will be the key part as the field is also well balanced. Looking at other climbers who have the explosivity, it's definitely worth paying attention to Lenny Martínez, Ruben Guerreiro and Ilan van Wilder .

Tobias Foss, Lennert van Eetvelt, Eddie Dunbar and Max Poole will be on the climber side, not the most explosive but have a chance to surprise, whilst on the puncheur side we've got the likes of Andreas Kron and Oscar Onley .

Tour de Pologne: Matej Mohoric wins stage 2, takes over leader's jersey

How it unfolded

Matej Mohorič (Bahrain Victorious) has won stage 2 of the Tour de Pologne and is now the new race leader after outdueling João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates) at the tough summit finish of Karpacz.

Mohorič and Almeida finished a few metres ahead of a lead group of around a dozen riders after a late attack by Rafal Majka (UAE Team Emirates) and Lennert van Eetvelt (Lotto-Dstny) had been reeled in.

The long, hilly stage came down to the tough final four-kilometre ascent, with a front group of 30 riders tackling the climb together.

After Majka attacked, Van Eetvelt bridged across, but they were swept up almost within sight of the finish, and Mohorič and Almeida then fought it out for the victory.

“I was super happy about today, the team did an amazing job keeping me in perfect position and out of trouble and I had really good legs on the last climb,” Mohorič said.

“I was tempted to go with Majka, but the team told me to wait until the final part.”

“I was always nervous about that if we had enough, but Damiano [Caruso, teammate] had enough to close the gap a little bit so I could reach across in the last part of the climb.”

“Then when I saw the last few hundred metres, I thought maybe I’d gone too early, but I had enough to go to the line.”

The longest and most mountainous stage of this year’s Tour de Pologne saw Jacopo Mosca (Lidl-Trek), Lorenzo Milesi (DSM-Firmenich) and Sam Brand (Novo Nordisk) build up a hefty gap of 10 minutes in the first hour before Ineos Grenadiers took control of events behind. The British team then steadily wore down the gap as the race wended its way across the plains south of Leszno, but when the trio reached the foothills of the Carpathian mountains, their advantage had shrunk to well below five minutes.

Brand sat up on the first of the day’s three classified climbs, the category 2 Przelecz pod Srednica, and Milesi began to struggle notably from halfway up. By this point, UAE had added their collective shoulder to the wheel.

Mosca was the first to cross the summit of the climb, but it proved to be a last-ditch effort as with 24 kilometres to go the duo were reeled in. The high pace set by Ineos and UAE had taken its toll though, and then over the second category 2 ascent, the Sosnowka, just 35 riders remained in the front group.

Ineos and UAE worked hard to keep things under control on the fast, flat segment that preceded the final climb, with Geraint Thomas leading the string onto the lower slopes of the Karpacz. But it was Majka who finally burst clear around three kilometres to go, with young Lotto-Dstiny rider Van Eetvelt the fastest to follow.

The Belgian managed to bridge across after a gutsy pursuit, but almost immediately after doing so, Caruso brought up a much bigger group. That in turn allowed Almeida and Mohorič to make their last bid for the line and it briefly looked as if the Portuguese racer, a winner of the Tour de Pologne in 2021, could drop his rival. 

However, on the relentlessly steep upper slopes, Mohorič just held off Almeida by the bare minimum to claim both the stage and the lead. Whether the Bahrain Victorious rider will be able to defend himself against Almeida in Thursday’s key time trial remains to be seen, but for now at least, Mohorič has followed up his dramatic Tour de France stage victory with a second win in just over a week.

He has covered every Tour de France since 1992 bar one, as well as numerous other bike races of all shapes and sizes, ranging from the Olympic Games in 2008 to the now sadly defunct Subida a Urkiola hill climb in Spain. As well as working for Cyclingnews , he has also written for The Independent ,  The Guardian ,  ProCycling , The Express and Reuters .
