iOS 16: How to Create Favorites Within a Safari Tab Group

In iOS 16, Apple has made several enhancements to its Safari browser, including some new features when working within Tab Groups. One of these is the ability to select webpages from your bookmarks so that they appear as Favorites in the Start Page of any new tab that you open within a specific Tab Group. Here's how it works.

iOS 16 Safari Guide Feature

When it comes to adding Favorites to specific Tab Groups, you'll first need to have some webpages in your bookmarks, and have created at least one Tab Group . Then you can follow these steps.

  • In the Safari tab browser, make sure your Tab Group is active by tapping the middle of the tab bar at the bottom of the screen and then selecting its name.
  • Next, tap the plus ( + ) icon in the bottom-left corner to open a new tab showing a Start Page.

safari

  • Toggle on the switch next to Tab Group Favorites , then tap the X in the top-right corner to close the Customize Start Page menu.

safari

  • Add a Favorite by tapping a webpage from your Bookmarks list.

safari

And now you're done. Your Tab Group favorites will now appear in the Start Page of every new tab that you open in the Tab Group.

How to bookmark Safari Tab groups (and other bookmark tips)

Safari tabs are moderately useful for research, though apple made some some inconsistent ui decisions..

Apple, iOS, macOS, iPhone, Mac, iPad, Safari, tips

And a big welcome back to AppleHolic readers. Today, I wanted to explain how to make better use of Safari Tabs in iOS 15, iPad OS 15, and macOS Monterey — particularly for researchers.

Slowly getting used to Safari Tabs

There are things I like about Apple’s new tab support in Safari. Where it shines is in the provision of contextualized collections of web pages across all my devices, though I do feel some friction when trying to use the new browser.

Why can’t I place specific tabs into specific Tab Groups using the Share menu? Why isn’t it clear how to add a page to a Tab Group? Why isn’t it immediately obvious how to save these pages, which otherwise disappear once closed on any device?

I feel like the usability still isn’t quite right, which is why on some devices I’ve tried to roll back as many of those changes as I can .

But time moves on, and most people will be using the default system  now that it is universally available. And while it took me some time to get used to it, I’m finding some features more useful than expected.

How to use Safari Tabs for research

Safari Tabs are moderately useful for research. Imagine you are working on a project about dogs (and everyone should love these animals). The first thing you’ll need to do is create a Safari Tab Group called ‘dogs,' because that’s the place you’ll pop all your dog-related pages in, until you save them as bookmarks (more later).

Creating a new group is slightly different on each device. Here is how to create a new Safari Tab group:

  • On iPhone, you’ll tap and hold the dual squares icon at the bottom right of the browser page, tap Move to Tab Group,  and then tap New Tab Group .
  • On iPad, you’ll open the sidebar and then tap and hold the new dual rectangle with plus character icon at the top right of the bar and choose New Empty Tab Group or New Tab Group, which will contain your currently open tabs.
  • On Mac, you’ll open the sidebar and then tap and hold the new dual rectangle with plus character icon at the top right of the bar and choose New Empty Tab Group or New Tab Group .

OK, so now you’ve created a group.

[Also read: 12+ tips to make remote meetings more effective ]

What this means is that as you work on your project you will be able to add individual pages to the appropriate Tab Group by tapping and holding the website address bar (iPad, iPhone) and choosing Move to Tab Group ; or control click the website tab (rather than address) on Mac and choosing Move to Tab Group in the contextual menu that will appear.

I’m a long way from feeling natural about this. But I do like that whatever page I have open on any of my devices in any of my Tab Groups is made immediately available across all my other devices.

What I don’t like is that they aren’t saved. So, if you accidentally close a page (such as when fumbling to export it into a different group), it’s gone. That’s why you need this tip:

How to bookmark your open Safari Tabs

The best way to save a web page from within Safari is to bookmark the page. When working with Apple’s new Tab Groups, you’ll need to become accustomed to different ways of achieving this need on each Apple platform.

On iPad, do it like this:

To bookmark all the tabs you have open in your current Safari Tabs space on your iPad, you’ll need to do this:

  • Tap and hold the address bar (not a page tab bar) until you see a contextual menu appear that offers to Copy, Add to Reading List, Add Bookmark and Add Bookmarks for XX tabs.
  • To bookmark your open Safari Tabs, choose Add Bookmarks for XX Tabs.
  • You’ll be able to choose a location and name for the collection on the next page, after which you press save.

If you are using an iPhone, do it this way:

To bookmark all the Safari Tabs you have open in your current Safari Tabs space on your iPhone, you’ll need a completely different approach:

  • Tap and hold the bookmarks icon at the bottom of the browser.
  • Choose Add Bookmarks for XX Tabs.
  • Choose a location and name and press save.

And if you're on a Mac...

How do you bookmark all your open Safari tabs on a Mac? While in the relevant Tag Group, you’ll need to shimmy your mouse up to the Menu bar, select Bookmarks, and then choose Add Bookmarks for these XX Tabs.

Summing up Tabs

While I find Safari Tabs more useful than anticipated, I think both the Tab and bookmark management functions should be made clearly and consistently available via the Share pane across all devices. This would reduce user friction and make for a smoother and more discoverable user experience.

In its present form, I can imagine people thinking they had saved a page by placing it in a Tab Group, only to find they hadn’t once they closed that page.

How to use Safari Tab Groups

If you’re a safari user, tab groups can help you keep your life organized and your desktop clean..

If you’re using Safari but you’re not using Tab Groups, well, it’s time to change that.

Tab Groups, as the name implies, allows you to group a selection of tabs together and essentially set them aside for future use. For example, if you have a bunch of tabs you use for work and a bunch of tabs you use after work, you can cordon these tabs off into batches so that they don’t get in each other’s way. You can use your work tabs at work and, when you’re finished, swap them for your “after work” tabs with just one click.

  • How to use Microsoft Edge’s new tab groups feature

You might also have different Tab Groups for different assignments at work or different school projects. Folks who share a computer might have different Tab Groups for each user. The possibilities are endless.

Here’s how to create a tab group in Safari.

How to create Safari Tab Groups on macOS

There are a couple of ways to do this. The easiest method is to make a group out of whatever tabs you currently have open. If you’re about to close Safari but think you might need to pick up where you left off when you open it later, throwing your tabs into a group can give you some peace of mind.

You can also create a tab group from scratch if there is a batch of tabs you think you might want to use later. This is a bit more time-consuming but will allow you to be more selective about which tabs to include.

To create a tab group from existing tabs

  • In Safari, click the down arrow in the toolbar. (It’s on the left side, next to the button that opens the sidebar.)
  • Pick New Tab Group With [X] Tabs .
  • In the left column, look for the Tab Group subhead. Name your tab group, then press Enter.

To create a tab group from scratch

  • Click the down arrow in the toolbar. (It’s next to the button that opens the sidebar.)
  • Pick New Empty Tab Group .
  • Name your tab group, then press enter.
  • Right-click a tab you want to add to the group, click Move to Tab Group , and select the tab group you want. Alternatively, you can click and drag the tab to your group on the left side.

To open your new tab group

  • Click on that down arrow again.
  • Click on the tab group you want.

Once you’ve got a group up and running, it’s not set in stone. You can adjust the makeup of a given tab group by clicking the arrow to its right in the sidebar’s tab group list. Right-click any tab that comes up, and you’ll have the option to remove it from the group, remove all tabs that aren’t it from the group, or move it to a different group,

You can also click the three dots just next to the arrow if you want to rename, delete, or share the group, along with other options.

How to create Safari Tab Groups on iOS

Tab Groups can sync between iOS and macOS devices, so if you create one on your Mac computer, you can still access it on your iPhone. Nevertheless, if it’s more convenient for you to create these from the Safari app on iOS, you can certainly do so.

  • In the Safari app, click the tabs button on the bottom right. (It’s the one with two squares.)
  • Press and hold a tab you want to add, then pick Move to Tab Group .
  • Select New Tab Group .
  • Name your new group.

How to use tab groups in Safari

With MacOS Monterey , Apple has updated Safari’s tab management system with a new look, more customization options, and the ability to form tab groups for managing especially busy online sessions.

How to create tab groups on iOS

We’re big fans of these changes, as they make work and research easier to manage over the long term, but the extra features will take some practice to get comfortable using. Here’s how to get started with tab groups so you can make the most of them.

What You Need

Mac computer, Safari browser

First, make sure everything is updated and you are using the latest version of Safari.

Step 1: Collect the sites you want to save.

Open Safari and start opening new tabs to visit the websites you want to collect in a group. If you are doing research on Einstein, for example, you would want to collect a number of tabs including biographies, common Einstein myths, a list of his major theories and works, and so on.

Don’t leave any blank tabs when you are finished. There doesn’t appear to be a limit to how many tabs you can put in a group, but at a certain point, too many browser tabs can become cumbersome — you may want to keep it under 20 or so.

Step 2: Turn your tabs into a tab group.

When ready, select File from Safari’s upper-left menu, then look for the option that says New Tab Group With X Tabs , where X is the number of tabs you currently have open. Select it.

Now you can name your tab — something like “Einstein,” for example — and it will automatically be saved. Any work you do in this Safari window will still count as the tab group, and the group will be updated accordingly. Close your Safari window to save your tab group for later.

When you want to access the tab group again, pop open Safari and select the Sidebar icon, just to the left of the Favorites menu. This drop-down menu will include all the groups you have created under Tab Groups. When you select the group you want, Safari will open all tabs in a single window for you to use and change Favorites to the name of your tab group.

Note the Small Grid icon to the right when you hover over a tab group — this opens up all tabs in a grid view that makes it easier to scan for the webpage you had in mind.

Alternative: Create a new tab group from scratch

You don’t have to collect your tabs first before turning them into a tab group. If you prefer to set up and name your tab group ahead of time, this is easy to do as well.

Open Safari, select File in the upper-left corner, and select New Empty Tab Group . Now, any tabs that you create while you work will be automatically added to the tab group you have made.

Step 3: Rename or delete your tabs.

Don’t let your tab groups get cluttered over time! Instead, reuse them by renaming them, or delete them when you are finished with that particular project or plan. Open Safari, then select the Sidebar icon right next to the Favorites menu.

Hover over the Tab Group , then right-click to open a menu with several choices. Here, you will see an option to Rename the group or to Delete it entirely when you are finished. Keep these options handy when your tab groups start to pile up.

Step 4: Share tab groups as needed.

In the Sidebar menu, when you right-click on a Tab Group , you’ll notice another option that says Copy Links . Choose this, and it will allow you to paste an outline-like section with the tab group as the title and a bulleted list of the web links. This makes it easy to share or email the tab group as needed.

We’ve been talking about the MacOS version of tab groups, but there’s good news: With iOS 15 updates, iPhones and iPads have very similar capabilities. Safari’s syncing capabilities will also stay in place, allowing you to access tabs you created on your Mac on other devices.

If you want to create tab groups on iOS, long-press the Tab button on Safari and select the arrow for Move to Tab Group to open the option for Tab Groups.

Don’t forget to keep updated on the latest Mac news for more information.

Whether you are spending your day on a Windows PC, Mac, or Chromebook, you should enable their blue light filter to help ease the strain on your eyes. We'll go into each of these steps below, but here's a simplified explanation of how to configure blue light settings on a Mac:

I have a web browser confession to make: I’m an inveterate tab hoarder. I’ve tried to change. I've tried to cull open tabs and tried to resist opening new ones -- but somehow the open tab counter just keeps on rising. At this point, I think I’m beyond saving.

What I’ve learned is that I need a web browser that can accommodate me, that has learned to accept my tab-based failings without judgement or chastisement. And after many years of trying, it turns out that Safari is not that browser. The tab problem

Master tab grouping in Safari and never lose one.

Safari now features tab groups that organize your browser tabs in groups you can label and move around. It helps you reduce tab clutter, similar to how tab groups work on Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome . Here's how to use them.

To use tab groups in Safari, you need to be running Safari 15 or later. You can update Safari using System Preferences.

When you're ready, launch Safari on your Mac and open your favorite websites in different tabs. Next, click the "Show Sidebar" icon in the top-left corner of Safari to reveal the Sidebar.

In the Sidebar, you'll see the number of Tabs open at the top. Right-click the button showing the number of tabs open at the top of the sidebar and select "New Tab Group with [#] Tabs" to add all the open tabs into a single new tab group.

All the tabs will appear in a new "Untitled" tab group on the Sidebar. Right-click "Untitled" and select "Rename." Give a new name to the tab group and hit Return to save it.

Next, click the "Hide Sidebar" button in the top-left corner of Safari to close the Sidebar.

Safari will show you the tab group label at the top, next to the "Show Sidebar" button.

To move a tab into a new or existing tab group, right-click on the particular tab, select "Move to Tab Group," and choose an existing tab group name or a new tab group.

You can switch between the tab groups by clicking on the tab label in the top-left corner of Safari.

To add a new tab in any group, you can press Command+T to open a new tab or click the "+" (plus) button in the top-right corner of Safari. You can re-arrange the order of the tab groups by dragging them above or below the existing groups on the Sidebar.

To delete a tab from a tab group, hit the Tabs Overview button in the top-right corner (four squares) to see the snapshot of tabs in a group. Then, click the "X" in the top-left of the tab preview thumbnail to remove it from the group.

Tab Groups are a helpful feature for organizing and managing tabs instead of leaving several of them open. You can also  copy the links of the open tabs in a tab group to save them for later before you close all the tabs at once . Happy Browsing!

When you're browsing the web on your current iPhone, do you end up with hundreds of tabs open? I mean, did you even know that the limit of tabs you can open is actually capped at 500? I've come about halfway to that, but I know others have reached that outrageous limit thanks to social media. But an iOS 15 feature can help you organize that chaos into something a little more manageable, at least, if you're disciplined enough to keep up with it.

Apple added Safari tab groups in iOS 15 , iPadOS 15, and macOS Monterey . With tab groups, you can sort and group together your open tabs, such as websites for work, shopping, entertainment, and more.

Here's how to use tab groups in Safari on the best iPhone and iPad, like the iPhone 13 Pro . And if you're wondering about it for your Mac, here's how to use tab groups in Safari in macOS Monterey .

The moment you launch Safari on iPhone and iPad, you've already created a new tab group by default. Any tabs that you open will go into this default tab group. However, you can create a new group at any time if you so choose.

  • Launch Safari on your iPhone or iPad.
  • Tap the tab button on the bottom toolbar . It looks like two cascading squares.
  • Tap where it says X Tabs ("X" being the number of tabs open in this group), with an arrow pointing down . This will bring up the Tab Groups menu .
  • Tap New Empty Tab Group .
  • Give your new tab group a name .

Now, any new tab that you open will be in this new tab group until you switch groups. And tab groups are synced across all of your devices via iCloud, so you can pick up easily where you left off across your iPhone, iPad , and Mac.

How to rename a tab group in Safari on iOS and iPadOS 15

If you have multiple tab groups, you'll want to make sure that they are named so you can easily recognize what they are for at a glance. Thankfully, you can rename a tab group at any time.

  • Make sure you are in the Tab Groups menu by following steps 1-3 above .
  • Long press on a tab group that you have already given a name .
  • Select Rename in the contextual popup menu.
  • Type in the new name .

  • Make sure you are in the Tab Groups menu .
  • Touch and drag one of your groups into your desired spot on the list.

You should make sure that you are quick to drag it because if you long-press the tab group, it will just bring up the menu to rename or delete it.

How to view all tabs in a tab group in Safari on iOS and iPadOS 15

When you can't remember all of the tabs that are open in a tab group, you can view everything that is in a certain tab group just by viewing that group.

  • While you're on a webpage , tap the tab button on the toolbar .
  • To see what other tabs are open in other tab groups, select the tab group you want to view tabs for.
  • You'll get to see a thumbnail of each tab in a tab group once it's selected.

How to delete a tab group in Safari on iOS and iPadOS 15

  • Select Delete in the contextual popup menu.
  • Confirm that you want to delete by tapping Delete .

Deleting a tab group will close out all tabs that are in the tab group. You cannot undo this action.

Tab groups are useful, but for the disciplined

As you can see, tab groups can definitely be helpful if you tend to end up with hundreds of open tabs in Safari over time, thought the feature can be a little hidden for most people. But as useful as the feature is, it's definitely for those who are disicplined enough to keep up with it. As you can tell from the screenshots, I'm a little lazy to maintain the upkeep. iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 brought many changes to Safari, and despite some early controversies, it seems to have quieted down a bit.

Updated May 2022: Added screenshots. These are still the current steps for tab groups in Safari in the latest version of iOS.

How to take advantage of Safari Tab Groups in macOS Ventura

Wesley Hilliard's Avatar

Tab Groups bring intelligent, contextually aware sorting to web browsing

tab group favourites safari

Apple expanded how users can organize Safari tabs with Tab Groups in macOS Monterey , but it left users asking how it differed from existing options. Like Bookmarks, Reading List, and Pinned Tabs — Tab Groups were yet another way to call up websites on demand.

Tab Groups make repeated workflows that use similar websites easier. For example, users paying bills or publishing a blog may have similar websites open every time.

With macOS Ventura, users can make their Tab Groups more useful thanks to Focus Mode integration. Using a feature called Focus Filters, users can attach specific Tab Groups to a Focus.

How to create a Tab Group

By default, Safari will launch with an empty Start Page. Opening websites from this page will create local tabs that will disappear if Safari is quit or the window is closed.

Create a new Tab Group for managing a project or to use with a Focus Mode

Tab Groups can be created from existing tabs in the local set, or an empty group can be created to start from scratch.

To create a Tab Group:

  • Open the Sidebar.
  • Click on the overlapping square icon with a "+."
  • Select "New Empty Tab Group" or "New Tab Group with x tabs."
  • Name the Tab Group based on its use.

When the Sidebar is closed, users can still create new Tab Groups or switch between them using the downward arrow next to the Sidebar toggle. Creating a new Tab Group will automatically open the Sidebar.

Tab Group tabs will be synced with iCloud and are available on any device signed into the user's Apple ID. Closing a tab in one location will close it everywhere.

Users can also pin tabs within Tab Groups for further control over what is shown and saved.

Customizing a Tab Group

Now that the Tab Group has been created, it is time to take advantage of its individual customization options. The local Start Page and Tab Group Start Page can be configured with a custom wallpaper and settings.

Start Page settings are available per Tab Group

There are multiple ways to make Tab Groups more useful than just acting as an organization tool. Creating multiple Tab Groups with custom Start Pages can serve as a siloed tool catered to a specific use case.

Customizations applied to a Tab Group Start Page apply only to that Tab Group. This page appears whenever a new tab is opened.

To customize any Start Page:

  • Open a new tab so the Start Page is visible.
  • Click the Settings icon in the bottom right of the window.
  • Toggle the boxes for each feature you'd like included in this Start Page. For example, Shared with You might not be desired in a work-based Tab Group.
  • Click on the left-most box in the background image selection to open an image picker. Choose a background that shows up in this Tab Group, or turn off the background to make the window transparent.
  • The current background image chosen will appear in the left-most box even in new Tab Groups. Changing this image will only affect the current Tab Group and will not overwrite a previous choice.

Now, different links and wallpaper will be shown when switching Tab Groups based on what the user has chosen. Toggling on "Tab Group Favorites" will enable a feature that makes Tab Groups even more customizable.

When Tab Group Favorites is turned on in a newly created Tab Group, it is empty. Start by adding websites that make sense for that specific grouping, like work websites, preferred travel sites, or news sources.

Customizing Tab Groups and switching them with Focus Filters can bring more control to Safari

This selection of Tab Group Favorites will only appear when that Tab Group is active. It appears as a separate list from the Favorites below, which are a universal list.

Try dissecting existing Favorites into different Tab Group Favorites for better organization.

How to tie a Tab Group to a Focus

Users with multiple custom Tab Groups may not want to switch between them manually. This tool is only useful if users can get to it seamlessly, especially if it can be done automatically.

Focus Filters make switching Tab Groups based on context an automatic action

Thanks to a new feature in Focus Modes for macOS Ventura and iOS 16 , users can activate Focus Filters to accomplish automatic switching. Safari's built-in Focus Filter will let users show a Tab Group based on the current active Focus.

To tie a Tab Group to a Focus Mode:

  • Open System Settings.
  • Click on Focus in the Sidebar.
  • Select the Focus you'd like to tie to a Tab Group.
  • At the bottom of the Focus settings menu, select "Add Filter."
  • Click "Safari."
  • Click "Choose."
  • Select the Tab Group desired.
  • Click "Add."

Now, whenever a Focus is active, that Tab Group will be automatically selected when a new Safari window is opened. Changing Tab Groups will not affect the current Focus.

Focus Filters have to be selected per device. Focus Mode automation can be set with schedules within the Focus Mode settings menu.

Sharing a Tab Group

Apple's previous few software releases have increased focus on remote collaboration tools. With macOS Ventura, users can share a Tab Group and interact with tabs over a SharePlay session.

Share a Tab Group to collaborate with friends or coworkers

A shared Tab Group doesn't offer many tools for collaboration beyond placing everyone on the same webpage. Collaborators can open the Tab Group and see the same web pages everyone else is seeing, if someone clicks a link in a tab that navigates to a new page, everyone navigates to the new page.

To start sharing a Tab Group:

  • Open the Sidebar in Safari.
  • Hover over the Tab Group to be shared, then click on the ellipsis that appears.
  • Click on "Share Tab Group" to see a share window.
  • Select the person or group chat to share the Tab Group with. Or, select "Messages" to manually search for people to share with.
  • Send the invitation.

Stop sharing a Tab Group from the same ellipses menu or delete the Tab Group when it is no longer needed. Users can manage people in the Tab Group via an icon in the Safari toolbar.

When sharing a Tab Group, new tabs opened by participants will appear with a blue dot in the corner. Users actively viewing a tab will appear in the tab.

A SharePlay session can be started from the people management button in the Safari toolbar.

How to Group Tabs in Chrome, Edge, Safari, and Firefox

Don't waste any more of your precious time—get those browser tabs organized!

Quick Links

How to group tabs in google chrome, how to group tabs in edge, how to group tabs in firefox, how to group tabs in safari, key takeaways.

  • Group tabs in Chrome by right-clicking any tab, selecting Add tab to new group , and naming/color-coding it for easy management.
  • Edge allows tab grouping by right-clicking a tab or using the Tab actions menu for suggested groups.
  • Firefox lacks built-in tab grouping, but the Simple Tab Groups add-on helps create, hide, and manage tab groups efficiently.
  • Safari keeps it simple with a dropdown menu, followed by creating a new group.

If you're a tab hoarder, tab groups are the best way to organize your browsing experience, so it's time to learn how to group tabs in the most popular browsers: Chrome, Safari, Edge, and Firefox.

Grouping tabs in Google Chrome is quite easy. To do so, right-click on any tab you want to add to a tab group. Select Add tab to new group and then name and color code your tab group. This helps you manage tab groups when you have multiple groups open.

To add more tabs to an existing group, drag and drop them near the tab group. Alternatively, right-click the tab you want to add to the group, click on Add tab to group , hover your mouse over it, and select the tab group where you want to add it.

If you use the same set of tabs frequently (perhaps for work), you can save the tab group in Chrome by right-clicking the tab group name in the tab bar and turning Save group on. Essentially, it is a bookmark of different tabs that you can access with a single click, and the saved tab group appears on your bookmark bar.

Like Chrome, Edge also lets you group tabs by right-clicking any tab and selecting Add tab to new group . In the same way, you can drag and drop tabs (once you've created a group) to add or remove them from the group.

However, Edge also offers another simpler way to group tabs. Click on the Tab actions menu icon (in the top-left corner) and select Organize Tabs . Edge then shows suggested tab groups, giving each of them a suitable name. If you need to change the tab groups, you can drag them into/out of the group. Then, click Group tabs , and voilà, your tabs are organized.

If you can't see the Tab actions menu, go to edge://settings/appearance, scroll down to Customize Toolbar, and turn on the Show tab actions menu .

Unfortunately, Firefox does not have a built-in feature for grouping tabs, so you'll have to resort to add-ons to manage multiple tabs in Firefox . Though there are several add-ons you can try, Simple Tab Groups is quite a popular and handy one.

Download: Simple Tab Groups for Firefox (Free)

Once you've downloaded the add-on, right-click any tab, select Move tab to the group , and then Create new group . Name the tab group and move all related tabs to the group.

Simple Tab Groups hides the grouped tabs from your window to declutter the screen. To access tab groups, click the extension icon and select Simple Tab Groups . From here, you can create new tab groups or click any existing tab group to open it. Right-clicking the group name shows more options, like discarding, exporting, or opening tabs in a new window.

You can also create a new group by clicking the extension icon , selecting Simple Tab Groups , and choosing Create new group .

Pin the extension to the toolbar to open tab groups quickly.

To create a tab group in Safari , follow these steps.

  • Click the down icon (next to the sidebar icon) and select New Empty Tab Group if you don't want to add any tab to the group for now.
  • If you already have tabs open, you can select New Tab Group with X Tabs to add all the open tabs to the newly-created group.
  • Once you've created a tab group, Safari lets you rename it to your liking.
  • You can also access the option to create a tab group by clicking on File .

Once you've organized all the tabs into groups, click the down arrow (beside the sidebar icon) to see all the different tab groups and select the one you want to open.

How to save open tabs on any web browser

Step away from the internet and come back later.

By David Nield | Published Mar 15, 2024 8:52 AM EDT

blank internet browser window with three tabs opened

It’s easy to end up with dozens of tabs open as you browse the internet. But what happens when you need to step away? You probably don’t want to lose the webpages you’re currently looking at when it’s time to stop endlessly browsing.

Thankfully, modern-day browsers include features that can put a pin in your browsing journey and help you come back to it later. You don’t have to leave all those tabs open on your computer until you return (which can quickly get confusing, as well as not being the best idea as far as security and privacy goes).

If you’re overwhelmed with browser tabs and need to take a break or start again, here’s how to put those tabs away in a safe place so you can come back to them later.

Google Chrome

Tech Hacks photo

If you’re closing down Chrome and want to get back to the same tabs again when it reopens, click the three dots (top right) then choose Settings . Under On start-up , select Continue where you left off . This will keep sessions going even if the browser is closed, but it doesn’t work so well if you want to use Chrome for something else in the meantime, and you want your current tabs to disappear for a while.

Another option is to right-click on a blank area of the tab bar, then choose Bookmark All Tabs . On the dialog that pops up, create a new folder with a name that will remind you what these tabs are for, then save the tabs to them. You can get back to them at any time by clicking the three dots (top right) then Bookmarks and lists .

There’s one more option for Chrome: Right-click on a tab header, choose Add Tab to New Group , and you can create a new group of tabs (right-click on other tab headers to add them to your group). Right-click on the group name in the tab bar, choose Save Group , and it gets added to the bookmarks bar just below—you can then right-click again on the group name and pick Hide group to make it disappear temporarily. Click its entry on the bookmarks bar to bring it back.

Microsoft Edge

Tech Hacks photo

Over in Microsoft Edge, click the three dots (top right), then Settings : If you open the Start, home, and new tabs panel, you can select Open tabs from the previous session . This means you won’t lose your tabs when you close and reopen Edge, and will work if you’re just taking a break from your browsing and then coming back to the same task.

For something a bit more comprehensive and flexible, you can save tabs as bookmarks—this means you can close all of the tabs down and come back to them whenever you like in the future. Right-click on a header of one of the open tabs, then choose Add All Tabs to Favorites , then create a folder to hold them in. You can get back to the tabs whenever you like via the three dots (top right) and Favorites .

Microsoft Edge also offers a feature called Collections, which works a bit like a more advanced version of bookmarks. Click the Collections button on the toolbar (two layered rectangles with a plus sign): On the sidebar that appears, you can create new collections and add currently open tabs to them, which can then be brought back whenever they’re needed from the same side panel.

Mozilla Firefox

Tech Hacks photo

If you’re a Firefox user, then you can make sure open tabs persist between browsing sessions by clicking the three lines (top right), choosing Settings , and opening up the General tab. Enable the Open previous windows and tabs option, and everything that you’ve currently got open will stay in place even if you close Firefox.

That’s fine if you’re carrying on with the same project between sessions, but if you want to hide the current group of tabs for a while longer, you can use bookmarks. Right-click on a blank area of the tab header bar, then click Select All Tabs . With that done, right-click on a tab header and choose Bookmark Tabs . Give the tab folder a name you’ll recognize later, and you can get back to your tabs via the three lines (top right) and Bookmarks.

Firefox doesn’t have tab grouping like Chrome, or the Collections feature that Edge offers, but it does have some excellent third-party browser extensions you can make use of. One such extension is Workana , which is a comprehensive way of managing open tabs and sessions—it’s free to use for managing up to five different tab groups.

Apple Safari

Tech Hacks photo

For those of you who browse in Safari on macOS, you can ensure open tabs stay in place: Open the Safari menu and select Settings , then head to the General tab and the Safari opens with menu. Choose All windows from last session to keep your tabs in place.

To keep a group of tabs accessible over a longer period of time, using bookmarks is a better option: If you open the Bookmarks menu, you’ll see you can add all the open tabs to a folder, or all the selected tabs to a folder (use Cmd+Click on a tab header if you need to select multiple tabs). You can save the tabs to a folder, which is then always accessible from the Bookmarks menu.

Safari supports tab groups too, which are very similar to bookmarks, with a few differences (you can open all the tabs in a group at once, for example, but not in a bookmarks folder). Select one or more tabs, right-click on the tab headers, and then choose Move to Tab Group . Even if you then close down these tabs, you can get them back from the Safari sidebar ( View and Show Sidebar if you can’t see it).

Good hotels, some better than others. Interesting itinerary

what the h... is tab group favorites and why can i not delete it?

allow us to delete 'tab group favorites', it's just another random and pointless addition, further cluttering up the bookmarks menu ('favorites' being listed at the bottom of the bookmarks tab is also un-deletable and ridiculous - absolutely stupid especially when clicking 'edit bookmarks' and 'favorites' appears first above your bookmarks...this makes no sense).
