Sirpur – The Heritage City Of Chhattisgarh

Sirpur is a village in Mahasamund district in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh. The village is situated on the banks of Mahanadi River and used to be the capital of Paduvanshi dynasty in ancient times. In Earlier times, the city was known by the name of ‘Shripur’ or ‘Shripura’ meaning the place of abundance, auspiciousness and Lakshmi. Sirpur has several temples dedicated to Lord Rama, Shiva, Vishnu, Laxman, Buddha Vihara, Jain Vihara and Devi temples along with Snan-kund. The temples have spectacular architecture enhanced with some modern conveniences for ease of visitors. 

When To Visit

There are two seasons to visit the heritage city- Sirpur. Period between Octobers to November is winters, in that time; weather is moderately cold, pleasant and comfortable for walking, wildlife encounters and sight-seeing.

The Months of January –February-March  are festival months; Maha Shivratri fair, Holi, Makarsakranti  and 3 day Music and dance festival organized by Chhattisgarh Tourism Board in January. The average weather conditions in Sirpur are moderate and bearable all throughout the year when compared to other parts of the state.

How To Reach

The most convenient way to reach Sirpur is by bus or car from Raipur. Sirpur lies on National Highway 53, there is plenty of state bus that runs on hourly basis from Raipur to Sirpur and the capital city of Chhattisgarh, Raipur is easily accessible from any part of India. 

By Railways

The nearest railway station is Mahasamund railway station located at the distance of 32kms. There are ply of express and passenger trains available to Sirpur from majority of metropolitan cities in India. The other rail head are Bagbhara railway station at 38.65kms and Tilda railway station at 45kms. Once you get off the train, bus, auto and pre-booked cabs are available to your destination. 

The village dosen’t owns its airport. The nearest airport is Swami Vivekananda International airport in Raipur at 74kms, the Raipur airport is well linked to other cities like Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Mumbai, Nagpur, Pune, Ranchi, Vishakhapatnam and more. Once you get off the airport, you can taxi, cab or board on bus to reach your destination.

Sirpur has a rich background of traditional cultural heritage and architecture. The archaeological remains are still a pride for this region. The Buddha Viharas in Sirpur are older than Nalanda. The town of sirpur has been mentioned in ancient epigraphic records, dating back to the 5th to the 8th centuries A.D. Drained by the pristine waters of the Mahanadi and facing the Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary on the Northeast, Sirpur is a small town, 84 kms from the capital, Raipur. Moving along from Raipur, one reaches Arang, from where one goes to Tumgaon. A road from here leads northwards, to Sirpur. It is an enriching experience to see how life goes on in these quiet villages, without getting affected by the hustle – bustle of the outside world.

Sirpur is an interesting site. The Laxman Temple here, believed to have been built in the 7 th century, is one of the finest brick temples in India, in good condition, and characterized by exquisite carvings and precise construction. The Archaeological Survey of India has established a museum in the temple premises, which houses a collection of rare statues and other relics significant to the Shaiva, Vaishnava, Buddhist and Jain faiths.

By the pristine waters of the Mahanadi, facing the Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary in the Northeast, Sirpur is a small town, 84 kms from the capital, Raipur. Spread over an area of about 30 Sq km, the ancient capital of Dakshin Koshal (now known as Chhattisgarh), Sirpur has a very special position in the history of Indian art and archeology as well as religious and spiritual knowledge and science.

22 Shiva temples, 4 Vishnu temples, 10 Buddha vihars, 3 Jain Vihars, remains of ancient market, underground granary market, a 6th century Ayurveda snana-kund (Ayurveda spa), Ayurvedic treatment center, 10 bedded hospital with ancient surgical instruments puts Sirpur in the list of the richest archeological sites of the country. The stone engravings are unparalleled. Dalai Lama and an envoy of South Korea and Sri Lanka visited the site recently and were enamoured especially by the Buddhist Vihars. The medieval traveller and scholar Hiuen Tsang too mentioned Sirpur in his travelogue implying the rich Buddhist tradition of the place.

The Laxman Temple: The temple is believed to have been built in the 7th century. It is one of the finest brick temples in India .There is a museum called ASI museum in the premises of the temple. Here one can see, passionately crafted idols relating to different religions like Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism.

Buddha Vihara: 9 Viharas, Sculptures, 79 Bronze idols and other antiquities reveal that Buddhist establishment flourished in this area.

Baleshwar Temple: This Shiva temple is a recently excavated place. It is thus named to pay tribute to the king Mahashivgupt Balarjun .The folklore states that the king was the visionary behind the temple complex.

Barnawapara Wildlife sanctuary: Barnawapara Wildlife sanctuary, is named after Bar and Nawapara forest villages, which are in the heart of the sanctuary .It is 15 km away from Sirpur. This sanctuary is famous for the frequent sighting of the Indian bison (Gaur). Cheetal, Sambhar, Neelgai, Wild boar are also commonly seen. Barnawapara boasts of over 150 species of Birds. Jungle safaris, Nature Walks, Bird Watching, Bicycle Trails, Star Gazing, and Bonfires are some of the activities one can look for here.

One of the very first places you must go to is the Lakshman Mandir in Sirpur. This is the most iconic structure in this ancient town and has a lot of historic significance. Made out of red brick stone, this structure is absolutely spectacular to witness. Built by Vasata in 7th Century AD, this temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The entire mandir stands on another surface that you can climb via a flight of steps. Inside the temple you will see a lot of ruins but the main shrine is still intact. The entire temple was dedicated to Lord Shiva and you can see several Shiva Lings in the vicinity of the temple. You can also find the famous Rock Painting of Ongna in this area which a lot of people visit to see.

Surang Tila Temple

Another popular and religiously famous temple in Sirpur is Surang Tila which was built in the 7th century. This temple is 8 m high and to go to the upper part of the temple. You must climb about 30 steps; these steps are a little distorted due to an earthquake that had happened a long time ago, changing the way the temple looks. The Surang Tila is different from the temples in the region and looks like more of a temple from the Mayan Architecture. Right in front of Surang Tila is the Mhanadi River which gives beautiful views when you visit the temple.

Gandeshwar Temple

The Buddh Vihar in Sirpur was reconstructed from its dilapidated state in 2003 and is believed to be built back during the Somanvansi era. One of the most attractive things in this temple is its entrance; it is carved with several figurines, most likely the people from the ancient era. Once you enter the vihar, you can see sculptures of Lord Buddha and several other stone carvings that show the life of Buddha from the time he was born, until he attained Moksha. Looking at all of these structures, you can tell how influenced this place was by Buddhism.

Ram Mandir in Sirpur is located right next to the Lakshman Temple and is also reconstructed from other remains recently. It is a wonder that this temple has been reconstructed and now it is an absolute beauty. The top of the temple is kind of conical in shape along with pillars around. There is also a huge bell in front of the temple which is part of the temple and can be rung when you enter the place. A lot of devotees of Lord Ram come here to worship the shrine of Lord Ram and Sita.
