The Rafa Experience

The last thing you need after a long day of travel is a difficult check-in process or a hotel room that’s so small, you’re practically standing in your suitcase to get dressed.

No sagging, uncomfortable mattresses. No hosts cancelling your reservation at the last minute. No apartments that don’t look anything like the photos. No requests going unanswered. No broken thermostats. No tv that plays only 8 channels.

No surprise (except the good kind, like Surprise! There’s already cream in the fridge!)

Booking a Rafa property isn’t just about what you get - it’s about what you don’t get.

Travel Lighter

Pack less, worry less, and manage less. We can handle the Pack N Play, crib, soap, shampoo, linens and towels for you. We will even set it up for the littlest members of your party so you’re not lugging a tank-sized suitcase through the airport.

Last-minute travel can be exciting — a sudden, unexpected chance to go someplace fun, see old friends or spend time with loved ones. But that thrill can fade fast the minute you start looking at costs. Airfare, hotels and rental cars are usually a lot pricier when you book last minute, and choices can be extremely limited.

To avoid getting gouged, you need to put in some extra effort. Here’s how to get the best deal possible on that last-minute trip.

Tips to get the best last-minute travel deals

Search lots of booking sites.

Those multi-search booking engines that promise to check rates every place under the sun all at once — they do. Yet their best rates can differ substantially. Try multiple multi-search engines including Trivago, Expedia, goSeek, Kayak, Hotels.com and any others you’ve had success with in the past.

But don’t stop there. Compare their rates with prices offered directly by the airline, hotel or car rental company. This late in the game, you just can’t know who’s most eager to earn your business. The only way to find out is to check.

Check different hotel dates before booking a flight (and vice versa)

If that big, beautiful beach resort you’ve been drooling over seems unusually expensive, search for slightly different travel dates. A hotel that costs $250 a night from Oct. 1 through Oct. 7 might cost $175 a night from Oct. 2 through Oct. 7, simply because a big convention at the hotel wraps up on Oct. 1.

If your dates are flexible, you’re in a better position to save money. But even if they aren’t, check a few different date ranges to find out whether unknown variables could be affecting your rate.

Check bundle deals

If you’re lucky, packages that include both a hotel room and a flight can offer amazing last-minute travel deals. That’s because of wholesaling, in which large blocks of hotel rooms are purchased or reserved by a company that tries to resell them to you at a profit. If they buy too many, they may start slashing rates at the last minute.

Check the “vacations” or “package deals” option on airline websites, as well as with online travel agencies like Pleasant Holidays, Costco, Travelocity or Orbitz.

Don’t forget about vacation rentals

Sites like VRBO.com and HomeAway.com offer a comprehensive, searchable database of privately owned vacation rentals that might be booked up by the time you’re planning a last-minute trip. But you won’t know until you look. And if they still have openings, private owners may be willing to cut their rates to fill rooms.

» Learn more: Beyond Airbnb — your guide to peer-to-peer travel platforms

Know your airline’s 24-hour cancellation policy

Unless you’re willing to pay a premium, most airfare is nonrefundable. But did you know that “nonrefundable” often doesn’t kick in until 24 hours after you’ve made your purchase? All major U.S. airlines will let you cancel for a full refund within 24 hours (they’re subject to rules from the Department of Transportation, which other booking sites may or may not follow).

Since last-minute travelers are navigating a landscape of wildly fluctuating prices, you might as well check fares one more time 23 hours after you book, just in case you find a better deal.

Don’t assume award redemption rates mirror cash rates

If you’re thinking of using points or miles to avoid a high last-minute fare, check out your options first. The formula airlines use to decide when to make saver-level award seats available is famously opaque. Sometimes the airlines can offer well-priced redemptions when you least expect them — like at the last minute. If you have miles to spend, check cash prices vs. redemption rates; the better option may surprise you.

Look at seating charts, available rooms and car rental options

By the time you’re reserving a last-minute flight, there may be only two seats on the plane: a middle seat for you in row 20 and a middle seat for your travel companion in row 39. You’ll want to know that in advance, and decide whether it’s worth paying extra to sit together on another flight or in an upgraded cabin.

For hotels, regardless of where you book, check the hotel website to see what room categories are still available. If they’re down to just one room type, that means you probably won’t be able to change rooms if you’re unhappy since they’re almost at capacity. You may get a better rate at a property that still has many empty rooms.

Definitely reserve a car as soon as you can. You don’t want to arrive at your destination airport to learn there are no rental cars available. And just because you’re able to make a reservation online doesn’t necessarily mean the car rental company has vehicles available. Call ahead to be sure, and ask about any active discounts.

Peruse restaurant and activity reservations online

If you’re headed to a ski resort, theme park, spring break hot spot or other likely crowded destination, restaurants could be booked weeks in advance. If you envision a sit-down meal or two, take a quick peek at OpenTable or Yelp Reservations to make sure you’re not left wandering around hungry. You can also check the availability of many tours, spas and activities online by playing with their reservations tool to select various dates.

Get to know your credit card’s travel concierge

If you have a travel rewards card, you may have a personal travel assistant right in your wallet. For example, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® , The Platinum Card® from American Express , the Citi Prestige® Card and Mastercards with the World Elite logo come with complimentary 24-hour concierge service. Terms apply.

This means real humans are standing by to help you find everything from hotel rooms to Broadway tickets. When better to tap their expertise than when you’re looking for last-minute deals? If you’re not sure exactly what the concierge can do, they can help you with that too — just ask.

Get your house in order

In the scramble to find last-minute deals, don’t forget all the other things you must do to get out the door fast. Make sure the dog walker is in town. Put a vacation hold on your mail delivery. Get your prescriptions filled and load the kids’ devices with books, games and in-flight entertainment.

We recommend making a list of every task you need to complete, to make sure you’re not boarding a plane and wondering if you remembered to pack your reading glasses or unlock the gate for the landscaper.

Last-minute travel deals, recapped

When looking for vacation deals at the last minute, make sure to review your options, use the resources available and remain flexible. But bbove all, have fun. Last-minute travel can be a great adventure when you’re doing your best to both save money and experience something new.

Last-Minute Flight Deals

Google Flights

Google Flights is a search engine that gathers fares from other travel sites. According to CNET, it bests other travel search sites , due to the fact that it's super speedy (plug in your dates, departure, and arrival destinations, and flights pop up almost instantaneously). If you can be flexible, leave your destination blank and then scroll through the list of cities that pop up to find the cheapest flights for your upcoming dates.

Cheapoair.com

Cheapoair.com is all about discounted flights. Click on its "Last Minute Flights" tab to find the absolute cheapest rates (if you're interested, book it as soon as possible before it goes up!). A recent sweet deal was a roundtrip flight from Philadelphia to Orlando starting at $81 (2 weeks out from departure date). There's also a toll-free number to call to hear about unpublished fares.

Vayama.com focuses on international flights, and there are always good last-minute deals to be found right on the homepage, so you don't have to go clicking around. A recent search saw an American Airlines offer from New York to Casablanca, Morocco, starting at $676 (2 weeks out from departure date). Also, check out its "Trending Deals" section for the most up-to-date offerings.

Last-Minute Hotel Deals

HotelTonight

While this app lets you book up to a week in advance (or 100 days in advance for stays up to 14 nights), it's really geared to last-minute bookings, so if there's a hotel you've had your eye on, this is your chance to stay there at a reduced rate. Deals go live each day at noon, and there are thousands of hotels to choose from, including the Mondrian in Miami. Download for iTunes and Google Play .

Another last-minute hotel-booking app is One:Night, which lists its same-day offers starting at 3 p.m. Though operated by Standard International — the parent company behind Standard Hotels, which are listed already — it also has several other stylish hotels, such as New York's Gramercy Park Hotel and LA's Viceroy L’ermitage Beverly Hills. Download for iTunes and Google Play .

While this last-minute hotel-booking app got its start as a website in England in 1999, it now has access to more than 200,000 properties around the world (but it offers more U.K. hotels than anyone else, including places like London's Radisson Blu Edwardian Grafton and the Hilton Edinburgh Carlton in Scotland). Download for iTunes and Google Play .

Last-Minute Travel Booking Site Deals

Image no longer available

LastMinuteTravel.com

With a site called LastMinuteTravel , you can expect prime deals for spur-of-the-moment travelers. The site offers deals on everything from flights and hotels to car rentals and packages, so you're sure to find something. A recent search found a four-star Berlin hotel for $96 per night. Other sites to check out include LastMinute.com and GoLastMinute.com .

Priceline.com

Priceline basically offers one-stop shopping: Not only can you book your hotel room, but your flight, rental car, and cruise as well. It still has the "Name Your Own Price" feature for choosing hotels, which offers steep discounts (if you don't mind not knowing where you'll be staying until you book). Its app has app-only hotel deals, including super last-minute deals with its "Tonight Only" feature.

Expedia allows you to save big when you bundle a trip — meaning book your hotel and airfare together — and often has great last-minute prices, but for its most up-to-the-minute offerings, check the Unreal Deals tab. A recent search turned up a 4-night trip to Vegas, with a stay at The Palazzo tower (within the The Venetian), including airfare, from $605 per person (2 weeks out from departure date).

Last-Minute Vacation Package Deals

Image no longer available

Gate 1 Travel

Gate 1 Travel has vacation packages to almost every corner of the world. It offers escorted travel packages, as well as independent trips. A recent independent vacation to Milan, featuring airfare, 4 nights of accommodations, and daily breakfast was going for $769 a month out. While there are always good deals on the site, you can also check its "Last Minute" section for the latest offerings.

CheapCaribbean.com

Who doesn't want to save money on a tropical getaway to the Caribbean or Mexico, perhaps places like Aruba and Cancun ? Find all the latest affordable last-minute deals under CheapCaribbean's "Nice Packages" tab — a recent offering for an all-inclusive resort on Mexico's Riviera Maya for 3 nights, including airfare, was going for $599 (down from $1,229) 2 weeks out.

Last-Minute Cruise Deals

Image no longer available

CruiseCompete.com

If cruises are your thing — or even if you are a first-timer — you can get quotes from multiple travel agencies to get awesome last-minute deals through CruiseCompete.com . Check its Super Cruise Specials, where a recent deal included a 7-night Mediterranean cruise from Miami, starting at $445 (one month out). You can also get special deals, such as two-for-one cruises and select sailings where kids cruise free.

Under Cruise.com's Last Minute Cruises section (in the Cruise Deals section), you'll find lots of discounted sailings, including a 4-day Western Caribbean cruise from $279 per person departing from Miami, less than a week out. There was also a 4-day Bahamas cruise for $378 per person a month out.

How to Get Last Minute Tickets for the Netflix Slam in Las Vegas

N etflix is venturing into live sports with their first-ever Netflix Slam, a tennis exhibition featuring Rafael Nadal facing off against Carlos Alcaraz . The two Spanish tennis players will compete this Sunday at the Michelob ULTRA Arena at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, in a match touted as "the legend vs. the prodigy."

"I'm honored and so happy to be sharing the court with Rafa in Las Vegas," Alcaraz said after the event was announced "He's an all-time great, of course, and his records and achievements speak for themselves." Nadal added, "I’m very excited for my first visit to Las Vegas. I'm also very excited to be playing with my fellow countryman Carlos Alcaraz. I am sure it will be a fantastic night of tennis."

The Netflix Slam will be streaming live on Netflix, in a dual broadcast for English and Spanish audiences, on Sunday, March 3, 2024 at 3:30 p.m. eastern / 12:30 p.m. pacific.

Watch on Netflix

If you're looking to make a last-minute trip to Vegas to watch the match in person, you're in luck: Tickets are still available. The lowest price we're currently seeing is around $130, on StubHub, Vivid Seats, and Seat Geek. On Ticketmaster's resale platform, tickets start around $150. Here's where to get last-minute tickets for the Netflix Slam:

The exhibition comes just before the start of the Indian Wells tournament, where Nadal will make his return to the tour after being sidelined with injury for most of last year, and Alcaraz will hope to defend his title, after winning the tournament in 2023.

The exhibition tennis match features Rafael Nadal versus Carlos Alcaraz.

'Rafa is back!': Nadal to face Alex De Minaur after winning first match in last-minute return

Simon Chapman headshot wwos

Rafael Nadal has made his first competitive appearance at the Barcelona Open as part of preparations for Roland-Garros .

It marked the first time since this year's Brisbane Open in January that Nadal has played at a tournament, returning in January after being sidelined with a hip flexor injury.

It was a last-minute decision for Nadal, with the Spaniard taking to the court on Wednesday.

Nadal triumphed 6-2, 6-3 in the round of 64.

Nadal will face Australia's Alex De Minaur in the round of 32 on Thursday at midnight (AEST).

After his loss, Cobolli walked past members of the public and smiled — "Rafa is back," he said.

"The crowd was great," said Nadal in his post-match press conference.

"A full crowd since the beginning. Even before the match started, the court was full, so that means a lot to me to be able to walk on court today and feel that warmth and that support.

"In a very special place for me, it's so helpful and means a lot to me to receive that support and that love."

Nadal looks set to retire from tennis at the end of the 2024 season. However, he hopes to be able to play at Roland-Garros once more before calling time on his illustrious career.

Nadal has won Roland-Garros a record 14 times and the Barcelona Open on 12 occasions.

This year's tournament marks the first clay court tournament since 2021 for Nadal.

Rafael nadal confirms ‘last-minute decision’ to play in barcelona open ahead of rolland garros.

Digital Staff

Rafael Nadal has confirmed he will play this week’s Barcelona Open in what will be the Spaniard’s first tournament since the Brisbane International in January.

And if he wins his opening match he will face Australian No.1 Alex de Minaur in the second round.

“I arrived here a bit like in a last-minute decision as I didn’t know if I was going to be able to play,” the 22-time grand slam champion said at a press conference on Monday.

“Tomorrow I’m going to be on the court.”

It is likely to be the court that bears his name.

His first match will be against 21-year-old Italian Flavio Cobolli on Tuesday. The winner will meet de Minaur, who has received a first-round bye. The pair have met four times but only once since 2020, in the United Cup last year when de Minaur, on home soil, beat the Spanish great.

Whoever comes through could then play another Australian, Alexei Popyrin, who starts his tournament against Daniel Altmaier with the winner to face Arthur Fils.

The third Australian in the event, Jordan Thompson, has a first round bye. Partnering de Minaur he lost on Monday in the doubles to fourth-seeded pair Edouard Roger-Vasselin and Santiago Gonzalez 6-2 7-5.

It was Thompson who was across the net the last time Nadal played, the third round loss in Brisbane coming after almost a year out for Nadal, sidelined by a hip flexor injury.

Nadal, 37, withdrew from last week’s Monte Carlo Masters, saying his body was not ready for competition. The former world No.1 has said he expects to retire after this season but is desperate to play at next month’s French Open where he has won a record 14 titles.

He has won the Barcelona title on 12 occasions but has not played in the claycourt event since 2021.

On court, Roberto Bautista Agut earned his 399th tour-level victory by defeating Roman Safiullin 6-3 7-6 (10-8). The Spaniard, who turned 36 on Sunday, will have his first opportunity to reach the milestone 400th win against seventh-seeded Karen Khachanov on Tuesday.

Qualifier Nick Hardt became the first Dominican to win an ATP match in six years after defeating Martin Landaluce 2-6 6-4 6-3 while American Brandon Nakashima defeated 2023 semifinalist Daniel Evans, of Britain, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2.

1)   First decide: What airline? What flight?

If you already know the airline, visit its website to view timetables. Otherwise, search for airlines & schedules on:  http://www.passrider.com/flightloads/   or https://www.rome2rio.com  Note flight numbers & transit times.

Then use   Seatguru , Expedia , Kayak , or  Travelocity to see the full-revenue fares on those flights and dates.  Is the money you save flying standby on ZED tickets  versus buying a full fare ticket worth the "standby" risk? Remember, we are boarded AFTER all the other airline's employees/retirees get boarded. If it's worth it for your situation, then proceed to buy your ZED tickets.

Good tip: Before traveling abroad, download the U.S. State Department "Smart Traveler" app from the App Store or GooglePlay. It will provide the latest advisories about the countries you are going to visit.

Once you choose the airline you wish to travel on then…

2)   Read United’s agreement with that airline…

Very important!  You should review the information contained in each agreement page  every time   you plan to interline travel, as the information is subject to change.

Log into FT.ual.com > Travel >  Other airline interline travel

First read the News Updates and Country Restrictions to see if that airline is affected.

Then click the "In this section" link at the top of the page, click on "Other Airline Travel" to view  the list of all the airlines United has agreements with.

Select the airline you want, then carefully read:

WHO is eligible to fly? Usually retiree, spouse, children & parents. Star Companion, Partner, Buddy?   Note which ZED tier the airline gives you & your pass riders: ZED Low, Medium or High?

WHAT CABIN ? Most airlines offer Economy, some may also let you fly in Business.

Note: If you buy YC ticket and seats are only available in BC you will not be boarded.

If you buy BC ticket and BC is full, you will be given a seat in Economy. You will only be refunded the difference in fare IF you are on a Star Alliance carrier (allow 4 weeks for refund processing). Other carriers will not refund the fare difference; so, buy both BC  & YC tickets, use the one for the cabin that has available seats; then go back to the website where you bought tickets to get a refund on the  un-used ticket.

HOW to buy tickets ?  Do you use  myIDTravelPurchase or ID90T ?                                                     Note whether you need to LIST and how.

Each year employees/retirees are allowed 8   " Travel Partner" passes (aka Star Companions) that can be used on 11 Star Alliance Carriers to accompany up to 2 companions on a flight; usually for economy class only.  The carriers are: Aegean Airlines, Air Canada, Austrian, Avianca Brasil, eurowings, LOT Polish, Lufthansa, SAS, South African Airways, Swiss and TAP Portugal.

Travel Partner (Star Companion)  Rules :

1) The employee/retiree must accompany their Travel Partner(s) on all flights.

2) Buy Travel Partner and employee/retiree ZED tickets on the same transaction.

3)  Travel Partner tickets are charged at the HIGH ZED fare.

4)  Each  Travel Partner pass is good for a roundtrip; if only used one-way, the pass is used up.

5) I f you book A>B>C you may stay at B as long as you like before continuing to C on one pass.

6)  We do not get 8 passes per airline, but rather 8 shared among all the carriers per year; unused passes do not roll-over to the next year.

Note:  ONE UA Enrolled Friend is eligible on Hawaiian Airlines at ZED low fare, if accompanied by the retiree. See the HA interline agreement page.

3) Buy ZEDs

There are two ways to obtain ZED eTickets (either m yIDTravelPurchase  or  ID90T ) ; both are accessed by links on the  Other airline interline travel  page on Flying Together>Travel.

To determine which method is used for the carrier you wish to travel on, read the airline information as  mentioned in #2 above.    NOTICE: The ETC has announced it will begin transitioning all Other Airline Ticketing to the MyIDTravelPurchase website; although some, like Air India and American Airlines are back on ID90T.

1) U se the  MyIDTravelPurchase   website to buy  ZED tickets on most of the 122 OA carriers. There is a list of carriers in the OtherAirline-InterlineTravel "Leisure Travel" section here: https://ft.ual.com/travel/interlinetravel/myidtravel_carrier_list .

2)  A few other carriers' ZED Tickets are purchased using the  ID90T  website.

Cost of ZED tickets:   A cost breakdown will be displayed b efore you finish your ZED purchase. Ticket prices are  calculated by ZED tier (Lo, Med, Hi), cabin selected (ECY or BC) and  mileage. Use milecalc.com to determine your trip mileage. ZED cost charts are on the FlyingTogether > Travel > OtherAirline/InterlineTravel page. TAXES and other fees  (which vary greatly by departure city) plus a small booking fee are all added in before check-out.

When purchase is complete, the ZEDs will be e-mailed to you (make sure you input the correct email address when buying tickets!). ZEDs are valid for 90 days from purchase date and can be refunded up to a year later.

Write down the PNR (reservation #) and ticket numbers on a sticky note and put them in your passport. You may need those numbers later to change/cancel/refund.

For detailed information and how to purchase/list/cancel/refund tickets, scroll down to #5 for MyIDTravelPurchase, #6 for ID90T .

4)   Fly!

Now that you’ve purchased your ticket, remember, some ZEDs are “open” (you must list with the carrier prior to travel) and some are for a specific flight (there is no need to list!).

Do you need to List??  Use the  list of airlines  in #2 above to learn about listing and checking-in and visit  www.flyzed.info  (check out baggage regs, dress codes, etc.). If in doubt, call the airline.

Check-in: Don't forget to check-in; usually on the airline's website or at airport kiosk.

Refunds are processed online, see #5 or #6 below.

How do we find passenger LOADS on Other Airlines?

NOTE: RAFA does not endorse or guarantee the accuracy of PSAs (passenger seat availabilities) obtained from the following sources, they are listed here for your information only.

  •   The carriers on MyIDTravelPurchase usually display happy and sad faces.
  •   Some carriers on ID90T display happy and sad faces for flight loads.
  •  Subscribe (fees apply) to ASU’s "Trip Check”:  http://members.asu.com/?page=tripcheck_join_LI .
  •   Subscribe (fees apply) to Non-Rev Checkin:   http://www.nonrevcheckin.com
  •  Join the Facebook page:  https://www.facebook.com/groups/LOADSHARE/
  •   Join the Facebook page:  https://www.facebook.com/groups/620733594643524/
  •  Or call the airline directly and ask the reservation agent.

What if you get bumped? Roll!

If you are not accommodated on a flight with your ZED ticket you should talk with the gate agents or go to the airline ticket counter.  Depending on that carrier’s operating policy, they may be able to roll you over to the next flight (same destination). Usually the roll-over is not automatic, you must request it. If the airline can't roll you to the next flight, then get online and buy another ZED ticket.

If you are bumped off the last flight of the day or you want to change origin/destination, you MUST buy a new ZED ticket. THAT CAN ONLY BE DONE ONLINE, using the myIDTravel or ID90Travel website.

Whether obtaining e-tickets on MyIDTravel or  ID90T  always  PLAN AHEAD!  Do not wait until the last minute to arrange travel on Other Airlines, do have a back-up plan, and pay attention to any travel embargoes/restrictions on  Other airline interline travel .

Select Traveller(s):   add gender if necessary and add  Travel Partners (aka “Star Companion”) if they are coming with you. S ee note in #2 above about Travel Partners. Click "Continue".

Schedule Query: Choose: OneWay or RT  (we recommend OW & suggest you make a separate listing for your return flight later when you can check loads closer to departure time. The only exception to that advice is when flying with a Travel Partner/Star Companion...in that case list round-trip since separate listings will use up an additional Star Companion ticket). S elect airline or leave "all airlines". Leave S2 standby. Input origin & destination/date/class (Y or BC) then Click “Find Flight”.  If no flights are displayed you have chosen something (travel partner, FC or BC cabin, or date) that is not allowed. Go back and re-choose.

Schedule Display:   Note the $ signs for ZED tier and the "Chance" faces far right. Use the hard-to-see scroll bar on far right to scroll down & view more flights. "Details" tab shows more,  Hit "Select" to choose flight you want.

Schedule Display; Outbound flight:  if it's correct, click "Continue"

Fares:  Breakdown will be in issuing airline's currency; US dollar estimate will be at the bottom. Note fare + TAXES + booking fee. Click "Continue".

APIS:  Fill in birthdate and documents if required, click "Continue"

Hazardous Materials:  Read & click "Continue" if required.

Contact & Payment Info: Fill in correctly : phone, email & Credit Card info. “Verify”. Then scroll to click "Finish”

ZED tickets are valid for 90 days from purchase

Most MyIDTravel “eTickets” are for a specific flight, you are  automatically listed  for the flight! Use the PNR they email you to check-in on the airline’s website.

HOWEVER: Some MyIDTravel tickets require listing ...read about that on the list of airlines (see #2 above) or visit  www.flyzed.com .

c. CHANGE YOUR FLIGHT:

Changes  cannot be done at a ticket counter or by phone; m ust be done online (go back to MyIDTravelPurchase).

Click the round radio button next to the dollar amounts to select either FC/BC (if available) or economy on the flight you desire. Wait for return flights to appear, then do the same for the return flight if you’re booking RT.

Next screen: " Review & Billing "; read carefully! Scroll down the page....you may buy trip insurance (click yes or no). Verify passenger names. Your total trip cost (including taxes & the ID90T service charge) will be displayed. Fill out credit card payment info, billing address and agree to terms. Click “ Complete Booking ”…. Done! Whether it’s a quick weekend getaway or an unexpected adventure, this checklist will help you stay organized and make the most of your last-minute travel plans.

Pre-Travel Checklist

Here are some items for your holiday reminder list to prioritize a few days before you depart. The key to a stress-free trip is being organized, so get these things out of the way as soon as you’ve booked your trip.

1. Double Check Your Travel Plans

Double-checking your travel plans before a trip is essential for a smooth and stress-free journey .

Take a moment to review your flight details, hotel reservations, and any transportation arrangements you’ve made. Verify the dates, times, and locations to check they are accurate.

By confirming your travel plans, you can avoid any last-minute surprises or complications and enjoy a worry-free travel experience from the start.

2. Make Reservations for Accommodation and Car Rental

It’s best to make reservations for accommodation and car rental as far in advance as possible – this might only be a few days in advance, but it’s better than showing up somewhere on the day hoping you can book.

Securing your preferred lodging ensures you have a comfortable place to stay while booking a rental car provides convenience and flexibility during your journey.

By making these arrangements before you arrive, you can guarantee availability and potentially save money . Take the time to research, compare options, and make reservations to ensure a seamless travel experience.

3. Empty Memory Cards and Backup Devices

Don’t forget to empty your memory cards and back up your devices!

This ensures you have sufficient storage space to capture all the wonderful moments during your travels. Additionally, backing up your devices provides an extra layer of security in case of loss or damage.

Stay prepared and ready to capture memories by clearing your memory cards and creating backups before you set off on your adventure.

4. Order Foreign Currency

To ensure smooth financial transactions during your trip, consider ordering foreign currency in advance.

This allows you to have cash on hand for immediate expenses upon arrival, such as transportation and small purchases. Ordering currency ahead of time also allows you to compare exchange rates and potentially save on fees.

5. Purchase Travel Insurance

Another crucial item on your travel checklist is purchasing travel insurance.

It provides a buffer against unexpected events such as medical emergencies, trip cancellations, or lost luggage. Having travel insurance offers peace of mind and ensures you’re prepared for any unforeseen circumstances during your journey.

6. Clear Out Your Travel Wallet/ Purse

Before your trip, take the time to clear out your travel wallet or purse. Remove unnecessary cards, receipts, and any items that you won’t need during your travels.

This helps streamline your wallet, making it easier to access important documents like identification, credit cards, and travel-related information.

7. Check You Have the Correct Adapter Plugs

Before travelling to a different country, it’s essential to check that you have the correct adapter plugs for your electronic devices. Different countries have different electrical outlets, so having the right adapter ensures that you can charge your devices without any issues.

Stay connected and powered up by verifying your adapter plugs before you depart.

8. Arrange Housesitters or Pet Care

If you have pets or need someone to take care of your home while you’re away, it’s important to arrange for housesitters or pet care in advance. This ensures that your furry friends are well taken care of and your home remains secure.

9. Make Sure Bills Are Paid

Part of your checklist to travel should include making sure you’ve paid any outstanding bills.

Before heading off on your trip, it’s crucial to make sure your bills are paid or ensure there’s enough money in your accounts for upcoming payments.

Settle any outstanding balances, such as rent, utilities, and credit card payments. This ensures you won’t have any late fees or disruptions in services while you’re away.

10. Get a Travel Guide

A travel guide can be a valuable companion for your trip, providing valuable information about your destination. From recommended attractions and activities to local customs and transportation options, a travel guide offers insights that enhance your travel experience.

Grab a travel guide tailored to your destination to help you make the most of your trip.

The Day Before You Go – Last Minute Travel Reminders

Now, before you begin on that incredible voyage, here are a few additional things to remember before travelling. Make sure you have finished this checklist before leaving on vacation.

11. Check-in Online

One of the last minute things to do that a lot of people overlook is to check in. To save time and avoid long queues at the airport, take advantage of online check-in.

Most airlines offer this convenient option, allowing you to select seats, print boarding passes, and even drop off your luggage in advance. Online check-in streamlines the airport process, giving you more time to relax and enjoy your journey.

12. Look up the Weather Forecast

Before finishing packing for your trip, be sure to check the weather forecast for your destination. This helps you pack appropriate clothing and accessories, whether it’s sunny and hot or rainy and cool.

By staying informed about the weather conditions, you can better plan and prepare for a comfortable and enjoyable travel experience.

13. Prepare the House

Take some time to prepare your house.

Secure all windows and doors, turn off lights and appliances, and adjust the thermostat to an energy-saving setting. Consider forwarding mail, arranging for plant care, and setting up timers for lights to give the appearance of someone being home.

By preparing your house, you can have peace of mind knowing it’s in order while you’re away.

14. Print Out Important Documentation

As part of your last-minute travel checklist, don’t forget to print out important documentation. This includes your travel itinerary, hotel reservations, flight tickets, and any necessary visas or permits.

Having physical copies of these documents serves as a backup in case of electronic device failure or connectivity issues. Keep your important travel information handy and easily accessible by printing it out before you embark on your journey.

15. Drink Lots of Water

Staying hydrated is crucial, especially during travel. Make sure to drink plenty of water before, during, and after your trip.

Aeroplane cabins and unfamiliar environments can be dehydrating, so keep a refillable water bottle handy and aim to drink water regularly. Proper hydration contributes to your overall well-being and ensures a more comfortable travel experience.

16. Make Sure Electronics Are Charged

Before leaving for your trip, ensure that your electronic devices are fully charged. This includes your smartphone, tablet, camera, and any other gadgets you’ll be taking with you.

Having fully charged devices ensures that you can use them for entertainment, communication, and capturing memories without worrying about running out of battery power.

Last Minute Packing Checklist

Don’t be rushed, and be sure to complete your last-minute packing list! These are the final details to remember and that I always make sure to pack with me for a vacation!

17. Pack Something Warm

One item to add to your last minute vacation travel checklist is something warm. Even if you’re travelling to a warm destination, it’s always a good idea to pack something cosy.

Weather can be unpredictable, and you may encounter cool evenings or heavily air-conditioned spaces. A light jacket, sweater, or scarf can provide comfort and ensure you’re prepared for any unexpected temperature changes during your vacation.

18. A Book or Something to Read

Don’t forget to pack a book or something to read for your vacation. Whether you prefer a paperback, e-reader, or audiobook, having something to delve into during travel or relaxation time can be a delightful escape.

A good book can entertain, inspire, and enhance your vacation experience, allowing you to unwind and immerse yourself in different worlds.

19. Pack Reading Glasses And/or Sunglasses

Reading glasses ensure you can comfortably enjoy books, maps, or any fine print you may come across. Sunglasses protect from the sun’s glare and UV rays, allowing you to explore and enjoy outdoor activities without straining your eyes.

Don’t forget to include these essential things you need for a vacation for clear vision and eye protection on your trip.

20. Medication and First Aid Kit

It’s always essential to pack any necessary medications and a basic first aid kit. Bring an ample supply of your prescription medications, along with any over-the-counter remedies you may need.

Additionally, include items like band-aids, antiseptic ointment, pain relievers, and any other essentials for minor injuries or ailments. Having these items on hand ensures you’re prepared to address any health concerns that may arise during your trip.

21. Snacks and Water Bottle

Snacks and a reusable water bottle are essentials for the last minute things to pack for vacation. Having snacks on hand can help keep hunger at bay during long journeys or when you’re on the go.

A refillable water bottle allows you to stay hydrated throughout your trip and helps reduce single-use plastic waste. By packing snacks and a water bottle, you’ll be prepared for hunger pangs and can easily quench your thirst while enjoying your vacation.

22. Pen and Notebook

When preparing things to pack for vacation, remember to pack a pen and notebook.

A pen can come in handy for filling out customs forms, jotting down important information, or even leaving notes for housekeeping.

A small notebook allows you to capture memorable moments, make travel journal entries, or simply jot down any thoughts or ideas that come to mind during your trip.

23. Lipbalm and Moisturiser

Climate changes, sun exposure, and air travel can cause dryness and discomfort. Keep your lips hydrated and your skin moisturized by applying lip balm and moisturizer regularly. These small but essential items will help keep your skin and lips feeling soft, nourished, and protected throughout your trip.

24. Chargers for Phones, Laptops and Other Electronics

Ensure you pack chargers for your phones, laptops, and other electronic devices as part of your last-minute holiday essentials.

Having the necessary chargers will keep your devices powered up and ready for use during your trip. Whether you’re capturing precious moments, staying connected, or navigating with maps, having fully charged electronics is essential for a smooth and enjoyable vacation experience.

25. Hand Sanitizer

As part of your travel preparations, don’t forget to pack hand sanitizer. It’s important to maintain good hand hygiene while travelling, especially in public spaces and during transit.

Hand sanitizer helps kill germs and prevents the spread of illnesses. Keep a travel-sized bottle of hand sanitizer in your bag or pocket for convenient use whenever soap and water are not readily available.

26. Tissues

Tissues come in handy for various situations, such as wiping hands, cleaning surfaces, or even as a makeshift napkin. They’re lightweight and easy to carry, making them a practical addition to your travel essentials.

27. Mints or Chewing Gum

Include mints or chewing gum in your vacation checklist. These small treats can freshen your breath and provide a pleasant taste during long flights, road trips, or sightseeing adventures. Whether it’s for a burst of freshness or to help alleviate ear pressure during flights, mints or chewing gum can be a refreshing addition to your travel essentials.

Frequently asked questions

What do i need to know before booking a flight.

There are various factors to consider when booking a flight including cost, fare classes, baggage policies, the complications of flying long haul, and complying with airport regulations. To make your booking journey smoother KAYAK has developed a comprehensive flight guide including insights on finding affordable flights, packing efficiently, and utilizing the best travel tools.

Which month of the year are flight prices lowest?

It’s well established that flights in the low season are generally cheaper than ticket prices during the high season. That means that knowing which month to find the lowest priced plane tickets will depend heavily on seasonality and your destination. While avoiding peak travel times can help you keep costs down, our data shows that the month with the lowest priced plane tickets for domestic flights based on all searches made on KAYAK in the last 12 months was January, while the most expensive was March. If you’re booking an international flight, then January is the cheapest month to fly and June the most expensive.

Can flying international flights with a layover save money on airfare?

For many long-haul international flights, flying non-stop is not possible and you will have to fly with a layover. Some routes will offer both and you could consider flying with a layover for a number of reasons. Firstly, breaking up what would otherwise be a long-haul flight, taking a rest and then completing the journey might make the flight more manageable. Secondly, prices can also be lower than non-stop flights, so while it might take longer for you to reach your destination, you could save money. We’ve looked at prices over the last 12 months for the 100 most popular international destinations for KAYAK users and on average, prices for non-stop flights were cheaper than flights with a layover.

How do I find the best flight deals on KAYAK?

A simple flight search at https://www.kayak.com/flights scans for prices on hundreds of travel sites in seconds. We gather flight deals from across the web and put them in one place. Then on the search results page you can use various filters to compare options for the same flight and easily choose the best flight deal from all of the deals coming straight from the travel sites to your screen, with no extra fee from KAYAK.

Does KAYAK query more flight providers than competitors?

Yes, KAYAK has access to more data and information than online travel agencies and consistently outperforms the competition in accuracy, globally.

What is KAYAK's "flexible dates" feature and why should I care?

Sometimes travel dates aren't set in stone. If your preferred travel dates have some wiggle room, flexible dates will show you flights up to 3 days before/after your preferred dates. That way, you can see if leaving a day or two earlier will find you a better deal. You can also select the flexible "weekend" or "month" search options to widen your search range and find the cheapest price that works for you.

What is the cheapest day of the week to book a flight?

The best day to book your flight depends on a number of factors, but there are general trends that you can follow to increase your chances of cheaper plane tickets. Based on an analysis of KAYAK data for all flights departing from inside United States over the last 12 months, the cheapest day to fly for domestic flights is Wednesday. For international flights, Tuesday had the cheapest tickets on average.

When is the best time to buy plane tickets - Last minute or in advance?

Last minute flight deals are definitely up for grabs but when exactly to purchase your plane tickets will depend on where you’re traveling to and from. Based on all data for flight searches made on KAYAK over the last 12 months, prices for domestic flights remained below the average price up to 1 weeks before departure. For international flights, deals could still be had up to 1 weeks prior to the departure date, with prices remaining below average. If you’re flexible, KAYAK brings you both advance and last minute one-way and round-trip flight deals.

How does KAYAK find such low flight prices?

KAYAK processes over 2 billion flight queries annually and displays results from hundreds of airlines and third party sites, allowing it to find a variety of flight prices and options. It also displays results from 2M+ properties along with rental cars, vacation packages, activities and millions of verified reviews so users can see as many available travel options as possible.

How can Hacker Fares save me money?

Hacker Fares allow you to combine one-way tickets on different airlines when it can save you money over a traditional round-trip ticket.

How does KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy?

KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool uses historical data to determine whether the price for a given destination and date is likely to change within 7 days, so travelers know whether to wait or book now.

Independent Travel to Moscow and St. Petersburg

My wife and I have traveled independently to many European countries and, after reading many of the comments in this forum, feel like we may be able to do so in Moscow and St. Petersburg as well, although we feel somewhat less comfortable than the other countries where we have traveled in Europe.

My biggest question is how much we will miss by visiting the main sites without a tour guide. In the other European countries we have visited on our own we have been comfortable and satisfied with the level of knowledge we have gained by studying and visiting on our own, although we believe a tour guide or tour company in any country would normally be able to provide greater insight than visiting a site on our own, but about in Moscow and St. Petersburg?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Unless you speak at least some Russian and read the alphabet it would be difficult without a guide. Very few signs in English especially in Moscow. Also not too many people speak English there.

I visited St Petersburg last Autumn for a protracted period , and did not find it anymore daunting than any other European city . As Ilja says , learning the Cyrillic alphabet is a big plus . I also found that it was fairly easy to grasp . It will , among other things , enable you to read signs with relative ease . I would answer the main part or your question ( about tour guides ) thus - I am not enamored of tour guides or tours. While I only use a tour under duress ( A sites rules prohibiting an independent visit - ie Glasgow School of Art , Municipal House in Prague , etc ) . Doing your own preparation and homework is the best way , in my opinion . My wife and I ventured through St Petersburg with nary a concern ,and made two day trips outside of the central district ( one was twenty five miles away , and no English speakers in sight ) Figuring out the logistical details , did not present any difficulties . While I never use tours , I am an inveterate eavesdropper , have done so many times , and find , that on balance , the information that they impart is fairly elementary . If you want greater detail , they are unlikely to supply it . I also prefer to go at my own pace , not being rushed and being able to dwell on things that most other visitors barely give a passing glance . If you are interested , let me know . I would be happy to provide you with information that will enable you to travel independently

Thank you, Steven. I am encouraged by your comments and feel the same way you do about tour groups. We are very much willing to prepare in advance and learn the basics of the Cyrillic alphabet to help us have a better experience.

I would be very interested in learning more about your experience in Russia and receiving any additional information you can provide on independent travel there, starting perhaps with obtaining the visa.

I am not opposed to hiring a private or small group guide for a specific site or for a day trip outside St Petersburg and Moscow, but, like you said, I much prefer the freedom of staying at places as long or short as I want and seeing the sites that interest me most. For example, neither my wife nor I are big into shopping, yet most tour itineraries leave afternoon time for just that. Not interested!

Please provide whatever you may feel would be helpful for us.

Russ , I see you are quite near San Francisco - you can start by looking at the VISA procedure , it's fairly straightforward . Since there is a consulate in San Francisco - look here http://www.consulrussia.org/eng/visa-sub1.html

And here - http://ils-usa.com/main.php

Having always traveled independently, we thought we could do a better job than any tour. How misguided (pun intended) we were. Now that we have had the experience of having someone native to the area walk us around and explain things through a personal perspective we realize how much we missed. For St. Petersburg I highly recommend http://www.peterswalk.com/tours.html . This is not a traditional guided tour, but an opportunity to receive some orientation to the area as well as insight into the "Russian soul". I think if you did this upon arrival the rest of your time would be much more meaningful. We really liked the http://www.pushka-inn.com . The location is superb (just around the corner from the Hermitage square), the rooms lovely, the included breakfast at the restaurant next door ample and overall an excellent value. We used this company to get our visa: https://www.passportvisasexpress.com/site/san_francisco_customer_service Note that it costs about the same for a 3-year visa as a one-year, and you never know if you might want to return within that more extended window of time. It is not cheap, so factor that into your planning.

If you like traveling without a guide in other countries and find this satisfying, the same will be true in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Of course it's not either/or - you can certainly take a guided walk or boat tour, for instance.

I cannot emphasize enough the importance of learning Cyrillic if you're going on your own. The book I used was Teach Yourself Beginner's Russian Script, which was great. It breaks down the alphabet into letters that are the same as English, letters that look the same but are pronounced differently, etc. It's out of print, but you can get used copies on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Teach-Yourself-Beginners-Russian-Script/dp/0071419861/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1459701143&sr=8-2&keywords=teach+yourself+russian+script

Russia is indeed a bit more "foreign" than say, Italy. However, in Moscow and St. Petersburg, I found enough English to be able to get by. Many restaurants had English menus and/or English speaking staff, for instance. This was most emphatically not true in Vladimir and Suzdal (two cities in the Golden Ring outside Moscow). I went with my sister, a Russian speaker, and if she hadn't been there, I would have been in big trouble. So, if you want to see places outside these two big cities, use a guided tour (even if just for that part). Also, Moscow and St. Petersburg are huge cities. Coming from New York, I wasn't intimidated, but those not used to a megacity may not be so cavalier (even I found them overwhelming at times, especially Moscow).

I found both Lonely Planet and Rough Guide to be helpful, and both to have various errors. Look at both, buy whichever one has a more recent edition, and then be prepared to have to discard some of the advice therein. Also, these places change more quickly than places in Western Europe. Be very careful of outdated advice. For instance, I was there in 2001 and 2010, so I won't give you any specifics on getting a visa - that changes constantly.

Just as a teaser, two things I saw and loved that I doubt would be included in any escorted tour are the Gorky House in Moscow (an Art Nouveau wonder) and the Sheremyetov Palace in St. Petersburg (it's now a museum of musical instruments, and the decor is amazing, particularly in the Etruscan Room).

Thanks for all the good advice. Any additional thoughts are welcomed.

One of history's seminal works pertaining to Russian history and culture and a MUST for anyone contemplating a visit or simply interested , is this fine work from 1980 - http://www.amazon.com/Land-Firebird-The-Beauty-Russia/dp/096441841X

This is about you and not about Petersburg. Do you like guided tours? We don't and didn't find that a guide added to our experience in China where we did hire private guides mostly for the logistics; it was easy to have someone drive us places. But once at a site, we didn't need the guide. I felt the same way about our 9 nights in Petersburg. We did hire a guide for the trip to the Catherine Palace again for the ease of logistics for us Olds. Here is our visit: https://janettravels.wordpress.com/2016/01/23/an-easy-trip-to-the-catherine-palace/ There are also snapshots of the Church on Spilled Blood in this photo journal. Having someone pick us up at the apartment and get us in without line ups and shepherd us through the palace steering clear of the tour groups was lovely. But we didn't need commentary because we can read and prepare.

You certainly don't need a guide for the Hermitage (we spent 4 days there), the Russian Museum, the Kazan Cathedral or Church on Spilled Blood or the Faberge Museum. We enjoyed a number of self guided walking tours including a couple from Rick Steves guidebooks. We took the canal cruise suggested by RS that had an English commentator. I would not take one without that as you will be totally clueless. The commentator was not all that good but at least we had some idea what we were seeing. So for people like us who like to do our own thing and can read a guidebook and don't particularly like to be led about, a tour is not needed. If you enjoy tour groups, then go for it. Petersburg is easy to negotiate. It helps if you can read the cyrillic alphabet and it is also useful to have the google translate ap on your phone. We found ourselves translating packages in grocery stores with it and the occasional museum sign or menu. I have one food I need to avoid and so it was handy to have the translator to talk with waiters (I could either show them the sentence, or play it for them or play it to myself and then repeat it to the waiter -- that all worked well)

Dear Russ, I cannot help you with Moscow, but about four years ago, my husband and I went to St Petersburg on our own. But, we did use a private guide for 4 half days. We both feel that our guide absolutely made our trip (we stayed 6 or 7 nights). We used a company owned by Tatyana Chiurikova, www.tour-stpetersburg.com I cannot say enough good things about her and our experience. I emailed her and we worked out a schedule/ sights that was tailored to our interests. She also offered some recommendations, which we took. The guide will meet you at your hotel. And frequently, at certain places, with the guide, we were able to skip the long entrance lines. We had an half day driving tour of the city (car, driver, & guide). You are taken to & go in places such as Peter & Paul Fortress, some of the cathedrals, etc. We had a half day with the guide at the Hermitage which ensured that we would see the major sights there. And, of course, you can stay after your guide leaves or return another day. Also, we had the guide for Peterhof (a must & go by boat) and Catherine's Palace. I hope that you will go to the website. As I said, our guide made our trip. I am positive that we would have missed quite a bit on our own everyday. And I'm sure we would have wasted a lot of time trying to get to various place. This was the best of both worlds, a guide where needed and plenty of time on our own. Whatever you do, I'm sure that you will love St Petersburg! Ashley

I am curious about the lines as we encountered no lines on our trip -- but it was in September. We got tickets for the Hermitage at machines and skipped those lines and our guide for the Catherine Palace which was our only guided experience (as noted before, chosen for the logistics of getting there) had arranged tickets and we didn't have a line, but then we also didn't see lines. We did not find lines at any other site.

Both Moscow and St Petersburg I've done on my own, that is together with the Dear Partner. I can't remember any problem getting where we wanted to go. The Metro systems are well signed, and with a little exercise and patience you can recognize the station names. With a good map and a good guide - we had the Rough Guides - that part of the logistics is solved. The language is a major problem, but the usual tricks of pointing, looking helpless, and making a joke of it all do wonders. I would hate to be led by a guide, but for others it is a comfortable thought.

We also did both cities on our own. I found the DK Eyewitness guide for Moscow has the best map. I used the one from our library (kept the book at home). Took the smaller RS book for St. Petersburg ( his book on northern cities). His map and restaurant ideas were all good. We also downloaded the Google maps in our Android Samsung tablets/phones for both cities and then could get directions to any place we typed in. The blue ball guided us everywhere. I'm sure we missed somethings by not having a guide, but we just enjoy walking around and getting a sense of a place. If you like art, The Hermitage is great. We went 3 times and still missed alot. In St. Peterburg we stayed at the 3 Mosta which we loved (quite and not far from the Church of Spilled Blood.) We also loved the Georgian food in both cities. There's a great Georgian restaurant near the 3 Mosta hotel. We're now in Belarus- very scenic. Enjoy your trip!!

Jesús Navas tackles Iago Aspas, who is without a goal for Celta Vigo since March.

La Liga’s punch bag Celta Vigo suffer another painful points loss to VAR

Rafa Benítez suggested physicists are needed in the VAR room after his side saw a last-minute penalty decision overturned

N ewton’s Law says force is equal to mass times acceleration. What it doesn’t say is what a penalty is, but perhaps it should. Rafa Benítez reckons so at least after his team ended another weekend in the relegation zone, fans whistling and waving white hankies while he had a quick flick through Principia on his way to meeting the ladies and gentlemen of the press. Never mind the referee, the assistant referees, the fourth official, the video assistant referee, the assistant to the video assistant referee (two of those), the TV technician, the supervisor and whoever lurks in that side-room at Las Rozas, what we really need is a physicist, the Celta coach told them; time to travel to Nasa to find the best.

Well, anything had to be better than this. On the night after Benítez had insisted his team would keep on keeping on however many times they “trip us up” and before the city’s biggest newspaper would describe them as Spanish football’s “punch bag,” just there to be pummelled, victims of a shadowy hidden hand, he lamented that this was the same old story. The fans would agree, if not solely for the reasons he offered up. “Once again we’re talking about how well we played, how many chances we had,” Benítez claimed on Saturday as they trudged home through the storm. “And how we didn’t get three points.”

This time, for the first time in seven weeks and only the second all season, they had thought they were going to, gifted hope only to be made to give it back again. On a wet, stormy night that had begun with protests and would end with them too, for a little while Celta had something to celebrate instead, a lifeline laid before them. It lasted three minutes and thirty-five seconds; the fall-out lasted a lot longer. Instead it was Sevilla who were bailed out; not, it would turn out, for the first time.

Celta had been a goal up against Sevilla, the better side until an eighty-fourth minute goal from Yousuf En Nesyri made it 1-1 at Balaídos, leaving them facing the prospect of another late, painful defeat. But they had watched, relieved, as Ivan Rakitic’s shot flew over on 91.04 and Adrià Pedrosa somehow failed to finish them off on 92.26. Down to10 men, they were at least holding on to a decent draw, Balaídos whistling for the end and erupting into a cheer when goalkeeper Vicente Guaita caught a cross on 95.15 of 96. But then something even better happened: they were handed a penalty with five seconds left.

Renato Tapia is shown a red card in the draw with Sevilla.

A cross from the right sailed some way over Tasos Douvikas’s head but as it went so did he, falling in front of goal. Alejandro Hernández Hernández, the referee so good they named him twice, pointed to the spot. On the bench and around the ground, everyone exploded, embracing. Carlos Dotor, who had sent the cross in, spun on his heel, punching the air. Unai Núñez held Douvakis hard. The way it’s been going, they might miss it, but still: this was it, a shot at a first home win this season, a chance to pull out of the relegation zone. It was a little light and a little lucky – daft too – but Jesús Navas had pulled at Douvikas’s arm, there might have been a touch by the ankle too, and down in the rain Hernández Hernández had no doubt.

Up in a small room in Las Rozas, 551km south-east, Eduardo Prieto Iglesias did. There was a conversation, a couple of minutes going by, and Hernández Hernández went to the screen, or tried to through the players blocking his path, Celta captain Iago Aspas getting up from the bench where he was watching it on an iPad to join them. There, a crowd gathered round him, peering over his shoulder and putting the pressure on, trying to get a glimpse of the screen like passing fans watching a penalty through a pub window. On the screen, the images were stopped, started, slowed down, and freeze-framed. Until, on 99.30, the ref announced that, actually, there was no penalty after all.

Furious, Aspas began waving at his players to walk off. He grabbed the VAR screen and threw it to the ground, striking a blow for all that is right which will be a ban even though he apologised the next day – push a player, sure, but don’t mess with the machines. Benítez silently shook his head, repeatedly muttering “incredible”, death staring the three officials down the tunnel. In the stands, the chant began: “Hands up, this is a robbery!” In the PA booth, someone whacked on a Raphael CD and soon the fans were dancing. The track chosen: Escándalo . “I can understand why they’re annoyed,” Sevilla winger Lucas Ocampos admitted.

Reaching the press room, Benítez didn’t even allow them to ask a question before he gave his first answer, time for some facts. “Force is equal to mass times acceleration and measured in Newtons,” he said. “I don’t know how much force is needed for a player to fall to the floor. Ten Newtons? Twelve, twenty, a hundred Newtons? It’s complicated. Do any of you know? You can speak to a physicist and we can put him in the VAR room, another person working there to tell us what force is needed for a person to fall.” They could ask Nasa to provide a physicist, he added. When he said much the same to the television, the reporter said something about him keeping his sense of humour at least. “It’s not humour, it’s resignation,” Benítez replied.

“Everyone saw it,” Aspas said. “It seems like every time we raise our heads, they try to sink us again. If it happens once, you put your head down; twice, three times … but we’re 12 weeks in and it’s seven games where it has not fallen our way. How can you re-referee the intensity of a tug when you’ve already given it? What’s he going to see in the VAR? With all the [decisions] they took off us, we should be almost in the Champions League places.”

That was pushing it, but Celta have had ‘goals’ ruled out against Mallorca, Real Madrid, Las Palmas and Girona. Last week’s decision at Montilivi, in particular, was ludicrous, while in Mallorca Benítez could not believe there was no goalline technology. Two weeks ago, Celta sent a delegation to Madrid to see the head of the referees and “ask nicely” what was going on, as the coach put it. On Saturday there were already protests in the 12th minute, placards demanding respect. And then in the 99th minute, came this.

Rafa Benítez on the touchline

But if refereeing decisions offer comfort, excuse and an external enemy, what they don’t offer is an entirely convincing explanation for the situation Celta are in; they may in fact risk avoiding issues at a club that survived on the final day last season , that sold their outstanding young player , and whose sporting director also works for PSG, made six signings in the summer and didn’t fill the big hole in the middle of the midfield. A club where Aspas, their everything – youth teamer, leader, captain, future sporting director, and the man single-handedly responsible for rescuing them three times – has repeatedly warned of a talent deficit. And where, at 36, even he can’t go on for ever.

It is true that Celta have been better than their results suggest. So has Aspas. He has created more chances than anyone and only taken four shots fewer than Iñaki Williams, who is top. Only Barcelona, Madrid and Sevilla have had more opportunities than Celta and only seven teams have taken more shots. Only two have beaten them by more than a single goal. When they lost 3-0 to Atlético they had more shots, in the 2-2 draw with Getafe, the tally said 26-3. Madrid only beat them with a Bellingham goal and they were 2-0 up against Barcelona with eight minutes to go.

La Liga results

Friday: Las Palmas 2-1 Atlético. Sat: Betis 2-0 Mallorca, Celta 1-1 Sevilla, Osasuna 2-4 Girona, Real Sociedad 0-1 Barcelona. Sun: Alavés 1-0 Almería, Real Madrid 0-0 Rayo, Valencia 1-0 Granada, Villarreal 2-3 Athletic. Monday fixture: Getafe v Cádiz.

And yet they lost 3-2 that game, just as two late goals, on 81 and 97, saw them defeated in Las Palmas and a 91st minute goal saw them lose at Girona, the league leaders. Fading after an hour is becoming their thing and the bottom line remains: they have won only only once all season, at Almería. For all those chances, only Las Palmas, Cádiz and Alavés have scored fewer. As for Aspas, top scorer for each of the past eight years, his totals read: 18, 26, 23, 21, 14, 14, 18, 12 and … zero. Bafflingly, he has not scored since March. It really should be temporary but it is not just that Celta are not in the Champions League places; it is that they are 18 points and 14 places away, currently going down. Never mind the Newtons, never mind Nasa, those are numbers to concern.

Besides, if that was bad, 18km away at Peinador Airport the injustice was played out all over again only much worse, a bureaucrat hidden away in an office somewhere rescuing Sevilla for a second time, beneficiaries of another bad call. When Diego Alonso’s team arrived a technical fault with their aircraft meant that they couldn’t fly, so Air Nostrum cancelled and commandeered a flight to Madrid instead booting out the people who were supposed to be on board and loading it with footballers instead. Never mind a penalty, the passengers had an entire plane taken from them, left stranded in Galicia while Celta’s opponents set off home taking someone else’s wings and someone else’s win with them.
