UCI Announces the 2021 WorldTour Calendars
The dates for the men’s and women’s races reflect the rescheduled Tokyo Olympics, plus the continued impact of coronavirus.
The 2021 World Tour season will kick off in Australia with the men’s Santos Tour Down Under from January 19 to 24, then the women’s Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race on January 30 and the men’s edition on January 31. Both the men’s and women’s seasons will wrap up in China in mid-October with the Tour of Guangxi.
The announcement outlines new dates for the 2021 Tour de France, so that it no longer interferes with the Tokyo Olympics. The 2021 edition of the Tour de France was originally scheduled to start in Copenhagen on July 2 and end on July 25; the Tour will now end on July 18, a week before the Olympics begin. Specifically, the Olympic road races will be held on July 24, 25, and 28. La Course, the women’s race , will also be held July 18.
For now, the calendars look very much like those you’d see in a normal year, with the usual spring classics, Grand Tours, and more. The women’s Paris-Roubaix will also make its second appearance.
[Want to fly up hills? Climb! gives you the workouts and mental strategies to conquer your nearest peak.]
Notably absent from the calendars, though, are WorldTour races in America. Since 2006, the U.S. hosted the Amgen Tour of California , but race organizers declared its indefinite “ hiatus ” late last year due to financial issues. Another WorldTour race not taking place next year is the men’s Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic in Great Britain.
The UCI also confirmed the cancelations of several races this fall due to coronavirus concerns: the Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec and the Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal in Canada, the EuroEyes Cyclassics Hamburg in Germany, and the Boels Ladies Tour in the Netherlands.
The UCI will announce its international road calendar—including ProSeries, Class 1 and Class 2—in September, which should (depending on the coronavirus outbreak) include U.S. races such as the Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah, Winston Salem Cycling Classic in North Carolina, Joe Martin Stage Race in Arkansas, Tour of the Gila in New Mexico, Chrono Kristen Armstrong in Idaho, and the new Maryland Cycling Classic .

About uci gran fondo world series, uci gran fondo world series: the uci gran fondo world championships qualifier series.
The UCI Granfondo World Series (former UCI World Cycling Tour) is a series of UCI-sanctioned races held all over the world. Some 25-30 qualifier events will qualify the top 25% in each age group to the UCI Granfondo World Championships, the former UCI Masters Road World Championships, where the champions are awarded with the coveted rainbow jersey. After its launch in 2011, the UCI Granfondo World Series enters the 2022 season with additional events.
While promoting high level competition for Masters and Amateurs, one of the aims of this series is the globalization of “Cycling for All”. With that in mind, the geographical spread of the events is very important, alongside with strict organizational and sporting criteria, and a certain tourism interest.
The UCI Gran Fondo World Series concept is focusing on both very competitive riders who either just miss the skills and talent to become a Pro Elite rider or who still want to compete at a high level at a later age, but also to fun riders who like to keep fit and finish the event.
In a partnership with renown Belgian sports marketing agency Golazo, the UCI has created the UCI Gran Fondo World Series. This partnership will be responsible for the overall organization, coordination and marketing aspects of the UGFWS qualifier events.

How does the UCI WorldTour points system work?
A guide to how the international federation selects teams for the men's WorldTour every three years
Points earned in pro cycling races have never been more important for the top teams. In past years, points earned by riders were used to create the little considered UCI rankings and to determine team size for World Championships and Olympic Games. They became a lot more valuable after the WorldTour reforms in 2018.
As part of these reforms, the UCI has set a firm limit of 18 teams in pro cycling's top tier in return for guaranteeing teams place in the WorldTour for three years, as long as they continue to pass all the other criteria. The introduce a performance incentive, the UCI instituted a sporting criteria that requires teams to be in the top 18 of the triennial rankings to garner a WorldTour licence.
In the first time in WorldTour history, Israel Premier-Tech and Lotto-Soudal were relegated in 2023 while Arkéa-Samsic and Alpecin-Deceuninck were promoted from ProTeam to WorldTeam status.
Here Cyclingnews unravels the complex points structure that will determine which teams stay and which teams go.
How does the UCI WorldTour points system work? UCI overhauls ranking points system, gives Israel-Premier Tech a reprieve Israel-Premier Tech, Lotto-Soudal relegated from WorldTour, UCI confirms
WorldTour relegation would not be the end of the road for a team. As long as they continue to perform, teams can make it to the Tour de France and other major races thanks to the UCI rule that requires organisers to invite the two highest ranked ProTeams to all of the Grand Tours, and the top three to WorldTour one-day races. French ProTeams like TotalEnergies and B&B Hotel-KTM are also favoured with wild card invitations
However, riders' contracts have an exit clause in the event of the team not maintaining a WorldTour licence. If teams cannot keep their top riders it is increasingly difficult for them to secure a WorldTour licence.
WorldTour status is important for sponsors but the guarantee of a Tour de France start is by far the most critical factor in securing funding.

Alpecin-Fenix have not yet confirmed if they are seeking WorldTour status next year: the step up comes with additional financial requirements and a more intense race schedule, which means a bigger budget is necessary to perform in order to avoid relegation.
Why did the UCI create the promotion/relegation system?
When the UCI created the WorldTour (then called the ProTour) in 2004, they hoped to create a system where the best teams and riders would be at the best races throughout the season.
However, the UCI came up against intense pressure from the most powerful player in professional cycling - Tour de France organisers Amaury Sport Organisation - who objected to being forced to invite teams based on their UCI licence and argued for a way for teams to be promoted or relegated based on sporting performance (among other demands).
The ProTour became the WorldTour in 2009 after the first major reform and has been a continual exercise in negotiation with various stakeholders. In the latest reforms, the ASO got their merit-based system for inclusion and a limit of 18 teams in the WorldTour and a firm number of two 'wildcard' teams they can invite. In return, the WorldTeams won a more stable three-year licence, and the ProTeams earned more opportunities to be promoted.
What is the WorldTour points system?
The system, implemented in 2018, tallies the points scored by individual riders, assigns them to their respective teams, and comes up with a total from which the rankings are derived.
Every three years, the previous three years' rankings are added up and the top 18 teams - be they WorldTeam or ProTeam - are deemed to have satisfied the 'sporting' criteria for a WorldTour licence.
The scheme was actually supposed to start with the 2020 WorldTour but was delayed until 2023 due to the risk of a legal challenge. This may have arisen as teams raced in 2017 and 2018 before the rules were put into place, when they did not know how important points would be.
Which teams earn points
Before 2016, only WorldTour teams could earn points toward the WorldTour team rankings but, in preparation for the promotion/relegation system, the UCI instituted the "World Ranking" in 2017 which allows both ProTeams and WorldTeams to gain points in WorldTour races.
Any UCI-registered team can earn points toward the World Rankings but the most valuable races in terms of points come at the WorldTour level, and only WorldTeams and ProTeams are allowed to compete in them.
All WorldTeams automatically qualify to race all WorldTour races. UCI rules require WorldTour races to invite the top-ranked ProTeam of the previous season - the top two teams when there are 18 WorldTeams for the Grand Tours, and the top three ProTeams for one-day races.
How are World Ranking points tallied?
The World Ranking teams points system tallies the points scored by the best 20 riders who are under contract with the team, and are published on Tuesday each week.
Riders earn points in races according to the various WorldTour tiers, ProSeries, class 1 races or various championships.
The points for each rider are tallied each week, the team rankings determined by the top 20 scorers. Then, every three years, the team points for the previous three seasons determine who will be in the WorldTour for the next three years.
Confusingly, the UCI also has individual, nation, one-day and stage-race rankings that are on a 52-week rolling basis but are not used for the promotion/relegation system directly.
What if a rider changes teams?
The points scored with a team stay with the team even if a rider leaves, and points earned before the rider joins - even if they raced without a team - do not transfer along with them to the new team.
For example, Lotto Soudal hired African Continental champion Reinardt Janse van Rensburg in May but his points for that victory will not count toward their 2022 season tally.
Where do teams earn points?
All of the UCI races count in different degrees for the World Rankings. In 2023, the UCI made a massive overhaul of how the points are awarded after criticisms that the previous system favoured minor races and one-day events over stages of Grand Tours.
The changes included adding a new tier to the previous five. The Tour de France is at the top tier, offering more points than any other race and in a tier all of its own. The overall winner earns 1,300 points, and points for stage placings went from the top three to top 15. Points are also awarded for leading the race on a stage or winning the points or mountains classification.
The Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a España are in the next step down, with winners earning 1,100 points.
The UCI added a third tier for the Monuments: Milan-San Remo, Paris-Roubaix, Tour of Flanders, Liège-Bastogne-Liège and Il Lombardia.
WorldTour stage races like Paris-Nice, the Tour de Romandie, Tour de Suisse and Tirreno-Adriatico with 800 points for winning.
There are points for lower-tier races, World, Continental, and National Championships, the Olympic Games, etc. For a full accounting, you can visit the UCI Road Races rules (Part II, 2.10.008).

The UCI Introduces New Safety Measures Amidst Hookless Rim and Tubeless Tire Concerns
Following its statement regarding several recent incidents involving racers using hookless rims with tubeless tires, the Union Cycliste International (UCI) issued a follow-up statement this morning, intended to remind riders of the rules in place for wheel-and-tire pairings.
The statement also announced the preparation of new measures aimed at keeping riders safe.
The biggest and perhaps most impactful decision outlined in the statement is the idea that the UCI will mandate that teams, riders, and the cycling industry at large work in tandem with SafeR—a recently developed independent entity tasked with improving safety in UCI-sanctioned road races—to determine “improvements and clarifications” regarding the use of hookless rims and tubeless tires.
According to the statement, SafeR will make recommendations in the near term to potentially institute new rules for the 2025 season. Additionally, teams and race officials will be required to report any incidents involving the combination.
“Teams, riders, and Commissaires are asked to report any incident involving hookless rims with tubeless tires (sic) that may occur and to ensure that the circumstances of the incident can be analyzed (sic) in detail,” the statement read.
In a longer view, the statement says that the UCI will “carry out an in-depth analysis of the appropriateness of the current requirements for the use of different types of equipment in competition, in particular wheels, to ensure that these requirements guarantee the safety of riders, are adapted to professional cycling, and do not rely exclusively or for the most part on the diligence and internal processes of manufacturers.”
The statement also noted that the standards they’ve outlined in the past may have been ignored, and the UCI “does not rule out the possibility that this may have been a contributing factor in some of the incidents encountered.”
The statement also reminded teams and riders of its standards for tires and rim widths on wheels used in UCI races, specifically article 1.3.018 of the governing body’s technical regulation guidelines, which explicitly outlines acceptable wheel and tire dimensions for inclusion in a UCI race.
These measures come in the wake of a series of high-profile incidences at the UAE Tour and Strade Bianche. First, shortly after Lotto Dstny rider Thomas De Gendt crashed out of the UAE Tour, an image of his bike with its tire sheared from its wheel made the rounds online. According to De Gendt, he hit something in the road. Meanwhile, Vittoria and Zipp, the wheel and tire makers, placed the blame on road debris. After many others argued that the tire simply came off the wheel, this story was confirmed .
Just over a week later, Strade Bianche’s official Instagram account posted a stark photo of De Gendt’s teammate Johannes Adameitz carrying his bike through tall grass, the tire torn off the wheel in almost the same fashion as De Gendt’s.
Shortly after those incidents, the UCI released an initial statement stating that it would investigate the issue more closely.

A new era for the UC Irvine Nuclear Reactor Facility
Professor Sarah Finkeldei and Professor Shen Dillon in UCI’s Nuclear Reactor Facility in Rowland Hall, getting ready to send a sample down to the reactor core for irradiation experiments.
The UC Irvine Nuclear Reactor Facility (UCI NRF) opened in 1969 under the leadership of Nobel laureate and founding chair of the UCI Department of Chemistry Professor Frank Sherwood “Sherry” Rowland.
The reactor once helped analyze the bullets that killed President John F. Kennedy, and today Assistant Professor Sarah Finkeldei of the UC Irvine Department of Chemistry, alongside Reactor Facility Manager John Keffer, is ushering in a new era for the facility.
UCI NRF recently collaborated with nuclear energy company Serva Energy, which last year succeeded in creating an isotope at UCI NRF — Actinium 225 — that carries immense promise as a treatment for certain types of cancer, including late-stage cancers. It is a collaboration Finkeldei hopes will open the door for similar projects in the future.

UCI NRF is also helping support the training of the next generation of nuclear scientists through Department of Energy funding for undergraduate involvement in facility activities.
Undergraduates involved at UCI NRF include Cristian Bautista Triana, Jacqueline Ferrer, Lauren O’Brian and Jack Shire of the Departments of Chemistry, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, and Physics & Astronomy, respectively.
“Having undergraduate students there to help with the project allows for the training of the next generation of nuclear scientists right here at UCI,” said Finkeldei. Undergraduates “get industry contacts, and they work hands-on at the reactor. There aren’t many places in the U.S. or the world, where you can do that.”
Finkeldei sees UCI NRF student involvement as a key part of what the facility will be able to achieve in the years to come. “It is essential to continue expanding our nuclear capabilities at UCI in order to enable new research directions, including the recent medical isotope developments,” Finkeldei said.
For their work at UCI NRF, undergrad Jack Shire won a $10,000 scholarship from the Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy as part of the University Nuclear Leadership Program (UNLP). Funding for the scholarship came from a DOE grant awarded to Finkeldei, enabling UCI students to apply for scholarships and fellowships over the next 10 years.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission also licensed in total four undergraduate and graduate students as nuclear reactor operators, after the students trained for a year at UCI NRF.
Besides the training and research happening at UCI’s NRF, in 2023 Finkeldei organized a UC Office of the President-funded Nuclear Science Workshop alongside Director Dr. Mavrik Zavarin of the Seaborg Institute at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). The one-week workshop took place at LLNL and the University of California Livermore Collaboration Center (UCLCC), and it provided 20 undergraduate students from across UCI a hands-on opportunity to learn about nuclear science, tour laboratories at LLNL and network with a slew of national labs, including LLNL, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Idaho National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The workshop was exclusively for UCI undergrad students, two-thirds of whom came from underrepresented groups or were first-generation students.
The Nicholas Endowment, a philanthropic organization based in Irvine, is funding the workshop this year. The workshop will take place at Lawrence Livermore National Lab and the UCLCC, and will host about 40 UCI undergraduates.
