The PGA Tour season, at long last, is coming to a close. All that’s left is the FedEx Cup Playoffs finale in the Tour Championship, where (wait for it) $75 million will be up for grabs.

So, how does it all work? We’re glad you asked. We could all use a refresher.

The Tour Championship uses a stroke-based bonus system based on the current FedEx Cup standings , meaning not everyone enters the tournament on the same playing field.

This has been the formula for the past four years, as the Tour changed the format beginning in 2019. The old format crowned a Tour Championship winner and a FedEx Cup Playoffs champion (although sometimes it was the same person), and keeping track of essentially two different tournaments — for players and fans — was, well, confusing.

So now there’s just one champion, who, along with winning the Tour Championship, will also be the FedEx Cup Playoffs champ.

The leader of the FedEx Cup points race starts the Tour Championship, held at East Lake in Atlanta, at 10 under. The top five in the standings is staggered (2nd at eight under, 3rd at seven under, 4th at six under and 5th at five under), and the last 25 players in the field are more bunched (i.e. places 6-10 start at four under, and so on).

Max Homa’s heckler incident illustrated risky future for PGA Tour, gambling

But just because Scheffler has a two-stroke lead over second place — and a much larger lead over others — doesn’t mean he’s bound to run away with this.

Take last year, for example, when Scheffler held the same spot on the leaderboard but was eventually beaten by Rory McIlroy, who started the tournament six shots back and even rebounded from a triple bogey on his first hole of the week to win the whole thing.

You can follow the action from 1-6 p.m. ET on Golf Channel on Thursday and Friday. Saturday’s broadcast is 1-3 p.m. on Golf Channel and 3-7 p.m. on CBS, and Sunday’s final round is 12-1:30 p.m. on Golf Channel and 1:30-6 p.m. on CBS.

2024 Corales Puntacana Championship odds: Surprising PGA picks, predictions from model that's called 11 majors

Sportsline's proven model simulated the corales puntacana championship 2024 10,000 times and revealed its pga golf picks.

The seventh PGA Tour iteration of the Corales Puntacana Championship will begin on Thursday at Corales Golf Club in the Dominican Republic. The first two years of the event were played as Web.com Tour tournaments, but it was elevated to the PGA Tour beginning in 2018. Defending champion Matt Wallace is not in the 2024 Corales Puntacana Championship field, but Nicolai Hojgaard is returning after a runner-up finish last year. Hojgaard turned heads at the Masters last week when he was briefly tied for the lead in the third round.

However, Alex Noren is the 12-1 favorite in the 2024 Corales Puntacana Championship odds, followed by Hojgaard (14-1) and Billy Horschel (20-1). In addition, McClure's best bets included Nick Taylor (70-1) winning the 2023 RBC Canadian Open, Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, and Rickie Fowler (14-1) finishing on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Top 2024 Corales Puntacana Championship predictions 

One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2024 Corales Puntacana Championship: Noren, who is the favorite has finished inside the top 20 in four straight PGA tournaments, struggles this week and barely cracks the top five. Noren played in his first PGA Tour event in 2008, and he has played in 171 PGA tournaments overall. However, he is still seeking his first victory, so it is difficult to justify his position as the favorite on the odds board this week.

Noren has struggled with his driver this season, ranked outside the top 100 in total driving and driving distance. He also sits outside the top 150 on the PGA Tour in putting average and one-putt percentage, so he would need to make drastic improvements during all four rounds this week. While this is a weaker field due to the RBC Heritage, the model has identified better golfers to back in the Dominican Republic. 

Another surprise: Victor Perez, a 35-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. The Frenchman finished inside the top 15 at the PGA Championship last year before making the cut at the Open Championship during a successful 2023 season.

Perez has seven professional wins, including three on the European Tour, and he is still seeking his first PGA Tour victory. The 31-year-old finished T3 in the Puerto Rico Open last month before cracking the top 20 at the Texas Children's Houston Open. He has proven he can beat up on weak fields and he ranks fourth on the PGA Tour in GIR percentage (71.8), making him an excellent longshot pick this week.  See who else to pick here .

S cottie Scheffler entered The Masters as a big betting favorite, and he'll deliver another short payoff if he goes on to win the 2024 PGA Championship next month.

Top-rated US sportsbooks are dealing Scheffler at odds to win the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky. The tournament begins on May 16.

Scheffler has three victories already on the season at increasingly shorter odds.

Scheffler's current run calls to mind Tiger Woods in the prime of his career. Woods won back-to-back Masters in 2001 and 2002 at odds of +150 and +200, respectively.

Should you bet on Scheffler to win PGA Championship at short odds?

Those who backed Scheffler to win The Masters were certainly pleased the outcome, but it's debatable whether he's a good bet if he remains near +400 every week. Why? Because no matter the player, golfers lose much more than they win. That's just the nature of the sport.

There have been 13 different winners in 15 PGA Tour events this season. Scheffler has participated in nine of those events and won three times. As great as he's been, Scheffler's lost twice as many tournaments than he's won this season.

Our colleague Bill Bowman, who's forgotten more than I know about golf, had Scheffler among his outright picks to win The Masters. He deemed Scheffler a good bet even at those ridiculously short odds.

Sunday's outcome suggests Bill was right, but it will still be a losing long-term proposition to play him each week at these odds. Tally up the numbers at the end of the season, and check your bottom line.

Other top contenders to win PGA Championship

We're only a month away from the PGA Championship, so here are other players to consider as threats to win the second major of the year.

Ludvig Aberg

Aberg was ridiculously good, even after a water ball derailed his chances to win The Masters, in his first-ever major tournament appearance. He finished runner-up to Scheffler, but made an immediate impression with his performance at Augusta National. Congratulations to those who backed the rookie to finish in the top five at +750.  

Brooks Koepka

The defending PGA Championship winner never really got it going in The Masters (T-45), but we're not discounting his chances at Valhalla. Major tournaments simply mean more to Koepka. He said as much on the PGA Tour, and that's probably doubly true now that Koepka plays in 54-hole events on the LIV Tour.

Three of his five major championships have come in the PGA Championship (2017, 2018, 2023) and it'd be no surprise to see Koepka holding the Wanamaker Trophy again next month.   

Rory McIlroy

It'll be a shame if McIlroy somehow fails to win The Masters before the end of his career. The career grand slam is the only thing missing on his resume. But one of golf's most popular players is having difficulty winning any major tournament.

When the PGA Championship tees off in mid-May, it will have been nearly 10 years since McIlroy won a major. That, of course, came at Valhalla in the 2014 PGA Championship.  

Will the golfing gods allow the circle to be closed a decade later? We'll see, but at least you're getting McIlroy at slightly better odds than usual in a major.
