The most obvious place to start is at competition directory such as:

a sweepstakes directory in the USA
a contest directory in Canada or the UK, or
the best Australian competitions and giveaways websites

These websites gather a huge list of current competitions in one place.

Bookmark these pages.

It’s a good place to try and win a trip to Bali, or win a trip to Singapore.

The problem with giveaway directories is that lazy compers head straight to these big mainstream sites, and enter competition, after competition, after competition.

That means there’s more challengers in the count, the main reason we don’t just rely upon these sites to find new competitions going live.

But they do find some competition sources (or are alerted by the giveaway host) that you might not find so easily on your own hunts, so they are worth a quick look each week.

Avoiding Junk Mail

Sweepstakes entries are one of the primary ways companies build their email lists. If you don’t want to be bombarded with junk email, try to opt out (if possible) from any mailing list sign-ups they are offering along with the contest entry.

It’s also smart to create a “junk mail” address through a free Web-based email provider such as Gmail and use it for all sweepstakes sign-ups. However, be sure to check that mailbox at least every couple of days, since winners are frequently notified by email.

Eligibility : No purchase or obligation necessary to participate and win. The Gatlinburg Convention and Visitors Bureau (hereafter referred to as the “Sweepstakes partner”) has the right to determine the eligibility of Sweepstakes winners. Employees of the Sweepstakes partner, their immediate families (spouses, parents, children and siblings, and each of their respective spouses), and members of the household of such individuals are not eligible to register for the Sweepstakes. The Sweepstakes partner has the right to determine eligibility.

How to Enter the Sweepstakes : To enter the Sweepstakes, you must visit the official Sweepstakes landing page and submit the form on the Sweepstakes application providing the following mandatory information: (i) first name; (ii) last name; (iii) email address; (iv) mailing address; (v) and confirm that he/she has read and agreed to the Sweepstakes rules, before the Sweepstakes Closing Date, to be automatically entered. Only one entry is allowed per person per email.

Prizes : The prize consists of a two (2) night stay for up to four (4) people and a Gatlinburg attractions pass for up to six (6) people. Prize Restrictions: Prizes are non-transferable. Federal, state and local taxes are the sole responsibility of the winner. Winners will be notified by email after the end of the Sweepstakes. All prizes are subject to verification of eligibility and compliance with official rules.

Draw : One winner will be announced randomly. The winner will be randomly selected by the Gatlinburg Convention and Visitors Bureau based on eligibility.

Prize Claim : In order to be declared a winner, the selected must: Fill in the entry form and complete and answer all the compulsory fields; Be reached by email by the Organizer of the Sweepstakes within forty-eight (48) hours after the draw. If it is impossible to reach the selected by email within forty-eight (48) hours after the draw, all rights to the Prize will be forfeited and another entry will be drawn. If it is impossible to reach the second selected by email within forty-eight (48) hours of the draw of the second entry, all rights to the Prize will be forfeited and another entry will be drawn. If it is impossible to reach the third selected by email within forty-eight (48) hours of the draw of the third entry, the prize will be forfeited.

In default of observing any of the conditions mentioned above or any other conditions stipulated in these Rules, the selected will be disqualified and the Prize that would have been awarded will be forfeited. Within the days following receipt of confirmation that the winner received notification about their Prize, the Organizer of the Sweepstakes will contact the winner to inform him/her of how to claim the Prize.

Personal Information : From time to time, the Organizer, with the winners consent, may use the personal information provided in the entry form for the purpose of: Communicating with the winner so he/she can take possession of the Prize; Communicating with the winner directly in relation to goods and services offered by the Organizer, including special offers and information on local events. 3. Contest Period: The Contest begins on July 14, 2021 at 12:00:00 a.m. Central Time (“CT”) and ends on August 12, 2021 at 11:59:59 p.m. CT (the “Contest Period”). The Contest Period consists of twenty-two (22) entry periods (each an “Entry Period”) as outlined in the table below. Each Entry Period begins at 12:00:00 a.m. CT on July 14, 2021 and ends on the End Date listed below at 11:59:59 p.m. CT. Sponsor’s computer is the official time-keeping device for the Contest.

4. How to Enter: During the Contest Period, post a photo of yourself with the person you’re the most excited to be reunited with on Twitter or Instagram and tell us why you can’t wait to be together within the caption including hashtag #VrboReunionContest (altogether, the “Entry”) as further described below. Please use first names only if referencing someone in your caption. Entries will be judged. See Section 6 for Judging Criteria.

(a) Instagram: If entering via Instagram, you must have an Instagram account and follow @vrbo on Instagram. If you do not have an Instagram account, one can be opened for free by visiting http://instagram.com and following the appropriate link to download the free Instagram application. To become a follower of @vrbo, visit Instagram.com/vrbo and choose to follow. Your Instagram setting must be set to “unprotected” and “public” in order for your Entry to be viewable by Sponsor and allow direct messages from anyone so that you may be contacted by Sponsor if you are selected as a winner. Additional entry conditions and guidelines apply, see below and Section 5.

(b) Twitter: If entering via Twitter, you must have a Twitter account and follow @vrbo on Twitter. If you do not have a Twitter account, one can be opened for free by visiting http://Twitter.com and following the appropriate link to download the free Twitter application. To become a follower of @vrbo, visit Twitter.com/vrbo and choose to follow. Your Twitter setting must be set to “unprotected” and “public” in order for your Entry to be viewable by Sponsor and allow direct messages from anyone so that you may be contacted by Sponsor if you are selected as a winner. Additional entry conditions and guidelines apply, see below and Section 5.

LIMIT: One (1) entry per person for the entire Contest Period, regardless of social media platform used to enter. You may only submit one (1) entry into the Contest, regardless of how many social media accounts you own or use.

Photo Criteria: In order for your Entry to be considered for judging, the following photo criteria must be met. The photograph:

Must be an original photograph taken by you, or by a friend or family member who has given you permission to enter the photograph in the Contest. If requested, entrant must be able to provide such permission or proof in a form acceptable to Sponsor.
Must be owned by you without any competing ownership interest that you know of, or should know of OR, in the case a family member has given you permission to enter their photograph in the Contest, they must be the owner of the photograph.
Must not depict any identifiable person without their consent, or in the case of a minor, without the consent of the minor’s parent or guardian. Entrant must be able to provide such permission(s) or proof in a form acceptable to Sponsor.
Must be family-friendly and not include any images or elements that in Sponsor’s sole judgement are profane, lewd, obscene, offensive, discriminatory, sexual, violent, or depict any drug or alcohol use.
May not have more than minimal or incidental use of brands and logos unaffiliated with Sponsor.
Must be visible to Sponsor by virtue of entrant’s profile on their social media account being public.
Must include hashtag #VrboReunionContest.

Multiple entrants may not share the same social media account. A potential winner may be requested to provide Sponsor with proof that he/she is the authorized account holder of the social media account associated with the winning Entry and an eligible entrant. The name of the person submitting the Entry must be (a) the name of the person who registered for the social media account and (b) the name of the authorized account holder of the email address associated with the social media account, otherwise, Entry may be deemed void. If it is discovered that an entrant attempted to obtain more than one (1) Entry by using multiple social media accounts, identities or any other methods, that entrant’s Entries shall be deemed invalid, that entrant shall be disqualified and any prize won shall be forfeited.

If entering with a mobile phone or other web-enabled device and using your wireless carrier’s network, standard data charges from your wireless carrier may apply. Check with your wireless service provider for details on these and any other applicable charges. Entrants are solely responsible for any such wireless charges. Mobile entry not required to submit an Entry into this Contest.

By using the hashtag, entrants are consenting to receive direct messages via the social media account used to enter if they are selected as a potential winner.

By submitting an Entry, you agree that the Entry conforms to the “Entry Guidelines” specified in Section 5, and that Sponsor may disqualify an Entry if it believes, in its sole discretion, that the Entry fails to conform to such guidelines. Entries that are not in accordance with the “Entry Guidelines” as stated in Section 5 or are not received during the Contest Period will be ineligible.

As determined by the Sponsor, in its sole discretion, Entries must comply with these Official Rules and the Instagram Terms of Use and Community Guidelines or The Twitter Rules found at https://www.instagram.com/legal/terms or https://help.twitter.com/en/rules-and-policies/twitter-rules , respectively (based on entry method). In the event of a conflict between the Contest Official Rules and The Twitter Rules or Instagram Terms of Use and Community Guidelines, the Contest Official Rules shall govern.

5. Entry Guidelines: Joint, group or team Entries are NOT permitted. Any representations, statements and/or claims made in the Entry or accompanying caption must be truthful and Sponsor reserves the right to establish the truth and accuracy of such representations/statements/claims. Failure to timely provide such substantiation, or if materials furnished by entrant, in an attempt to substantiate representations/statements/claims made in their Entry, are determined by Sponsor or its agencies to be inadequate or unreliable, will result in disqualification. Once submitted, entrant cannot supplement, modify or alter their Entry.

BY SUBMITTING AN ENTRY, THE ENTRANT ACKNOWLEDGES THAT HIS/HER ENTRY MAY BE POSTED ON SPONSOR’S WEB SITE OR SOCIAL MEDIA ASSETS, AT THE SPONSOR’S DISCRETION. Submission of an Entry grants the Sponsor and its agents the right to publish, use, adapt, edit, publicly perform and/or modify such Entry in any way, in any and all media, including for use in advertising and marketing, in perpetuity, without limitation, and without consideration to the entrant.

By submitting an Entry, you agree that your submission is gratuitous and made without restriction, and will not place the Sponsor under any obligation. As determined by the Sponsor, in its sole discretion, Entries must meet the following guidelines: (a) Cannot be sexually explicit or suggestive, violent or derogatory of any ethnic, racial, gender, political, religious, professional or age group, profane or pornographic, or contain nudity; (b) Cannot promote alcohol, marijuana, illegal drugs, tobacco, vaping, firearms/weapons (or the use of any of the foregoing),any activities that may appear unsafe or dangerous, or any particular political agenda or message; (c) Cannot be obscene or offensive, endorse any form of hate or hate group; (d) Cannot promote terrorist acts or provide instructional information about illegal activities; (e) Cannot defame, misrepresent or contain disparaging or slanderous remarks about the Sponsor, its advertising, its customers or its products, or other people, products or companies; (f) Cannot advertise or promote any brand or product of any kind (except the Sponsor’s), without permission, or contain any personal identification, such as license plate numbers, personal names (without permission, USE FIRST NAME’S ONLY PLEASE), email addresses or street addresses; (g) Cannot contain copyrighted materials owned by others (including photographs, sculptures, paintings and other works of art, stills, or images published on or in television, movies, the Internet or other media, except such materials owned by the Sponsor) without permission; (h) Cannot contain background artwork, unless it is an original work of the entrant; (i) Cannot contain materials embodying the names, likenesses, photographs, or other indicia identifying any person, living or dead, other than the entrant, without permission; (j) Cannot communicate messages or images inconsistent with the positive images and/or goodwill to which the Sponsor wishes to associate; (k) Cannot depict, and cannot itself, be in violation of any law.

If the Sponsor, at any time during the Contest Period, receives a complaint (including but not limited to a cease and desist letter, general letter of complaint, etc.) alleging intellectual property infringement in an Entry, the Sponsor reserves the right to remove such Entry at any point in the Contest Period, without prior notice and Entry will be deemed void and ineligible to receive a prize.

Any waiver of any obligation hereunder by the Sponsor does not constitute a general waiver of any obligation to entrants. The Sponsor reserves the right to waive the submission requirements set forth herein in its reasonable discretion.

6. Contest Judging: Entries will be judged by Sponsor and/or Sponsor’s agents (the “Panel”) based on the following equally-weighted criteria (the “Judging Criteria”):

Expression of the importance of family/friends and connections with family/friends
Quality of the photograph
Memorable/heartfelt photograph
Memorable/heartfelt caption/story

For each Entry Period: The Entry(ies) receiving the highest cumulative score(s) for all criteria awarded by the Panel will be deemed the winner(s) (subject to verification) for that Entry Period. Non-winning Entries’ scores will carry forward to each Entry Period. So, while an entrant might not be the winner for a particular Entry Period, they could be deemed the winner for a subsequent Entry Period depending on the scores of all of the Entries received up to a particular Entry Period’s End Date. In the event of a tie for a top position for a particular Entry Period, tied Entries will be re-judged by a new Panel (based on the judging criteria stated herein) to determine the winner of the tie. All decisions related to judging are in the Sponsor’s sole discretion.

7. Winner Notification: Potential winners will be announced daily on Sponsor’s social media channels (@vrbo on Instagram and @vrbo on Twitter), beginning on July 15, 2021 and ending on August 13, 2021. Potential winners will also be notified on the first business day following the announcement by Sponsor’s agent via direct message or via a comment on the entrant’s winning post. Sponsor’s agent will request winner’s contact information, including email address and date of birth. Potential winners must provide the requested information within seventy-two (72) hours or prize may be forfeited. Potential winners must have a public profile on their social media account used to enter in order to receive the notification or prize may be forfeited.

Prizes won by an eligible entrant who is a minor in his or her state of residence may be awarded to a minor’s parent or legal guardian who must sign and return all required documents. Sponsor and Promotion Parties are not responsible for suspended or discontinued wireless or online service which may result in a potential winner not receiving a notification. Sponsor is not responsible for any change in entrant’s social media account or their email address, mailing address and/or telephone number (after he/she has provided such information). Additionally, each potential winner will be required to complete, sign and return an Affidavit of Eligibility/Liability Release, and, where lawful, Publicity Release within seven (7) days as indicated on the Affidavit. If (a) an attempted notification is returned as undeliverable, (b) a potential winner does not respond to the instructions as stated within the notification, (c) required documents are not returned within the required time period, (d) a potential winner cannot be verified, or (e) a potential winner is otherwise unable to accept a prize as stated, the prize may be forfeited and an alternate winner determined, in Sponsor’s sole discretion. Only three (3) alternate winners will be determined, after which the prize will remain un-awarded.

By accepting a prize, each winner (and winner’s parent or legal guardian if winner is a minor) agrees that his/her Entry will be deemed a Work Made For Hire under the Copyright laws of the United States, but if it cannot be so deemed, then the winner irrevocably assigns and transfers to Sponsor all of his/her right, title and interest in and to his/her Entry, including all but not limited to all copyright and trademark rights which he or she may have, in the United States and worldwide, therein, for consideration, the receipt and sufficiency of which is hereby acknowledged. Each winner (and winner’s parent or legal guardian if winner is a minor) hereby waives in favor of Sponsor, all rights of “Droit Moral” or “Moral Rights of Authors” or any similar rights or principles of law that winner may now or later have to his/her Entry. Sponsor reserves the right to alter, change or modify the winning Entry, in its sole discretion. Sponsor, it’s agencies and/or assigns shall have the unlimited right and permission to use, modify, edit, distribute, publish, reproduce, display, exhibit, create derivative works of or to otherwise transmit the Entry, in any media, including digital, electronic, print, television, film and any other media now known or hereafter devised, for the purpose of trade, advertising and promotion, or any other lawful purpose whatsoever, in perpetuity, throughout the world, without additional compensation to the entrant or to any other party, except where prohibited by law. Upon request of Sponsor, winner shall execute and deliver such additional instrument of assignment, as may be solely deemed by Sponsor, reasonably necessary to establish the ownership of record of the right, title and interest in and to the Entry and of the copyrights transferred and “Moral Rights of Authors” waived under these Official Rules. Should Sponsor fail to request the said assignment as stated, that shall not be deemed a waiver of Sponsor’s rights and Sponsor may at a later time request the assignment.

8. Prize Details: Prizes (30 total, see table in Section 3 for breakout per Entry Period): Each winner will receive one (1) $5,000 credit to be used towards a stay in a Vrbo rental property located within the fifty (50) United States or District of Columbia (“Vrbo stay”), selected by winner. Approximate Retail Value (“ARV”) of each prize is up to $5,000.00. The actual length of stay will vary based upon the prevailing nightly rate for the days reserved by the winner. Property must be booked in advance and is subject to availability. If a desired Vrbo rental property is unavailable, winner must select another Vrbo rental property. Winner must accept prize as stated by Sponsor or prize may be forfeited. Any difference between stated value and actual value will not be awarded. ARV of all prizes is up to $150,000.00 USD. Limit one (1) prize per household.

Prize Conditions: The Vrbo stay is for one (1) booking only. Winner is not allowed to book more than one (1) Vrbo stay in connection with the prize. This is not a cash prize. In the event the winner’s one (1) Vrbo stay is less than the full $5,000.00 prize stipend, the unused portion will be forfeited and Sponsor shall have no further obligation to winner regarding such unused portion. Winner’s Vrbo stay must be booked through Sponsor’s designated agent within ninety (90) days of winner’s prize acceptance; and the Vrbo stay must be completed by July 31, 2022. All expenses and incidental travel costs not expressly stated herein, including but not limited to, airfare, ground transportation, meals, incidentals, gratuities, service charges or facility charges, personal charges at lodging, security fees, taxes or other expenses are solely the responsibility of winner. Winner may be required to provide a credit card prior to check-in and is solely responsible for all incidental charges and may be required to sign an additional liability release for the use of the Vrbo accommodations. By accepting the prize, winner agrees to abide by any terms, conditions and restrictions related to the Vrbo rental. Winner is subject to the terms and conditions and privacy statement of Vrbo at the time of booking their Vrbo stay accessible at https://www.Vrbo.com/legal/terms-and-conditions and https://www.Vrbo.com/legal/privacy-policy . Sponsor assumes no responsibility for canceled, delayed, suspended or rescheduled prize-related activities (including, but not limited to any act or omissions whatsoever by the air carriers or transportation companies, if any) beyond its control. In the event the winner and/or a guest misses any portion of their booked Vrbo stay through no fault of Sponsor or due to Force Majeure, Sponsor will have no liability for any costs associated with hanging or rebooking winner’s Vrbo stay. Any minor guest (under the age of 18; 19 if a resident of AL or NE) must be accompanied at all times by minor’s parent or legal guardian who must be the winner or one of winner’s guests. Guest(s) (or if a minor, his/her parent or legal guardian who must be the winner or one of winner’s guests) must complete and return a Liability Release prior to booking the Vrbo stay. Winner agrees that acceptance of the prize is done so entirely upon their own initiative, risk, and responsibility.

No cash equivalent or substitution of prize is offered, except at the sole discretion of the Sponsor. No transfer of prize is permitted. Sponsor reserves the right to substitute a prize or any component thereof for one of equal or greater value if the designated prize or any component thereof should become unavailable for any reason. The winner responsible for all taxes and fees associated with prize receipt and/or use and will receive an IRS Form 1099 for the retail value of their prize.

9. Release: By entering, entrants agree to release and hold harmless Sponsor and its parent, subsidiary, affiliates, suppliers, distributors, advertising/promotion agencies, and prize suppliers, and each of their respective parent companies and each such company’s officers, directors, employees and agents (collectively, the “Released Parties”) from and against any claim or cause of action, including, but not limited to, personal injury, death, or damage to or loss of property, arising out of participation in the Contest or receipt or use or misuse of any prize, including travel thereto.

10. Publicity: Except where prohibited, participation in the Contest constitutes the winner’s consent (and winner’s parent or legal guardian’s consent if winner is a minor) to Sponsor’s and its agents’ use of winner’s name, likeness, social media handle, Entry (which may be altered, changed, modified, edited, used alone or with other works, as solely determined by Sponsor), photograph, voice, opinions and/or hometown and state for internal or promotional purposes in any media, worldwide, without further payment or consideration. If Sponsor intends to use your Entry for promotional purposes, Sponsor will attempt to contact you and notify you of its intent, but Sponsor is under no obligation to do so.

11. General Conditions: Sponsor reserves the right to cancel, suspend and/or modify the Contest, or any part of it, if any fraud, technical failures, human error, pandemics, acts of government, travel restrictions, changes in laws, or any other factor impairs the integrity or proper functioning of the Contest, or awarding of the prize, as determined by Sponsor in its sole discretion. In such event, Sponsor, in its sole discretion, may elect to determine the winners as described herein from among all eligible Entries received up to the date of is continuance for the prize or an alternate prize of roughly similar value. Sponsor reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to disqualify any individual it finds to be tampering with the entry process or the operation of the Contest or to be acting in violation of the Official Rules of this or any other promotion or in an unsportsmanlike or disruptive manner. Any attempt by any person to deliberately undermine the legitimate operation of the Contest may be a violation of criminal and civil law, and, should such an attempt be made, Sponsor reserves the right to seek damages from any such person to the fullest extent permitted by law. Sponsor’s failure to enforce any term of these Official Rules shall not constitute a waiver of that provision.

12. Limitations of Liability: The Released Parties are not responsible for: (a) any incorrect or inaccurate information, whether caused by entrants, printing errors or by any of the equipment or programming associated with or utilized in the Contest; (b) technical failures of any kind, including, but not limited to malfunctions, interruptions, or disconnections in phone lines or network hardware or software; (c) unauthorized human intervention in any part of the entry process or the Contest; (d) technical or human error which may occur in the administration of the Contest or the processing of Entries; (e) incomplete, late, lost, undeliverable, incomplete, damaged or stolen Entries, email or mail; or (f) any injury or damage to persons or property which may be caused, directly or indirectly, in whole or in part, from entrant’s participation in the Contest. Entry is at user’s own risk. 13. Disputes: Except where prohibited, entrant agrees that: (a) any and all disputes, claims and causes of action arising out of or connected with this Contest or any prize awarded shall be resolved individually, without resort to any form of class action, and exclusively by the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas (Austin Division) or the appropriate Texas State Court located in Austin, Texas; (b) any and all claims, judgments and awards shall be limited to actual out-of-pocket costs incurred, including costs associated with entering this Contest, but in no event attorneys’ fees; and (c) under no circumstances will entrants be permitted to obtain awards for, and entrant hereby waives all rights to claim, indirect, punitive, incidental and consequential damages and any other damages, other than for actual out-of-pocket expenses, and any and all rights to have damages multiplied or otherwise increased. Family plans dream 'Home Alone' trip after lotto win

A mum whose children are big fans of the film Home Alone 2: Lost in New York can finally afford to take them to the Big Apple thanks to a big win on the lottery.

Leyla Eaton, 33, from Thurrock, Essex, only signed up for the People's Postcode Lottery two months ago.

She was "elated" when she bagged the lottery loot - more than £411,000.

Her neighbour, chemistry teacher Henry Aimiuwu, won the same sum and said it would be "life-transforming".

"It's been the kids' dream to go to New York for Christmas for such a long time because of Home Alone 2," said Ms Eaton, who runs a courier company with her husband Jamie.

"We'll definitely look at doing it, it's never been on the cards before."

She said the idea of joining the lottery "came into my head, like a voice" and explained the win had come "at such a needed time".

"We've had a really tough 12 months. My husband is quite unwell and needs some surgery."

She said holidays for the children, aged six and nine, would "allow us to breathe".

Neighbour Mr Aimiuwu, 56, said at first he did not believe he had won that amount of money.

"I hope when I wake up tomorrow, I will still be able to say, 'I'm me' and that this is real," he said.

"Winning is good, but the charitable deeds that are part of People's Postcode Lottery is much better. I just think we have got to do more for humanity and that is what the lottery is about."

He said he was looking forward to taking his family on holidays to Canada and Madeira in Portugal, adding: "This is huge."

The lottery announces winners of the Millionaire Street prize (of £1m) each Saturday and each month local charities in those areas share £1m.

One local charity to have benefitted from this month's win is Thurrock Play Network, which has been awarded £25,000 from Postcode Community Trust, which gives out grants funded by players of the Postcode Lottery.

The charity aims to make play inclusive to everyone in the community, no matter the age or circumstances.

Sylvia Yates, a trustee of Thurrock Play Network, said: "For small non-profit organisations like ours, this is a dream come true."

Making the Most of Skip-Generational Trips

For grandparents traveling with grandchildren, it’s a chance to bond and create shared memories.

One of the travel trends to look for in 2024 is skip-generation trips . This is when grandparents travel with their grandchild sans children, thereby skipping a generation.

According to the 2023 U.S. Family Travel Survey, grandparents choose to take a skip-generational trip to be able to bond with their grandchild. In the survey from the Family Travel Association, grandparents said that after taking this type of trip, they think their grandchild is more adventurous and that the trip helped their grandchild be more flexible and adaptable.

We spoke to travel experts to find the best tips and types of travel for your skip-generation trip.

1. Talking with your child about traveling without them

“The initial conversations have to be between the grandparent and the parents, without the grandchild involved, and just make sure that the parents are comfortable with it,” says Kenneth Shapiro, the board president of the Family Travel Association. He explains that typically parents are excited that their child and parent are going to take a trip together. In most cases the grandparent pays for the vacation, so their child doesn’t need to worry about expenses. Also, if the grandparents take their grandchild on the trip during their school vacation or the summer, the parent doesn’t need to take time off from their job. “It’s a win-win for everybody,” says Shapiro.

Grandparents can explain that this trip is an opportunity to spend time with their grandchild. “I think it’s a chance to just say that [the grandparents] want to bond in a special way,” says Darley Newman, the host and executive producer of Travels with Darley .

2. Explaining expectations during the trip

If a grandparent doesn’t live with their grandchild, they will need to set expectations with them before they travel. “There are certain situations that an adult needs to be in charge. You can’t just let the kids run the show all the time,” says Shapiro.

He explains that the grandparents should ask for their grandchild’s input during the planning stages. “I think that’s an opportunity to give the grandchild some responsibility and also a chance to have fun,” he says. If you allow the grandchild to collaborate during the planning process, then they will be able to select activities or destinations based on their interests. “The more that the grandchild’s involved [in the planning], the more special I think the trip is going to be,” says Jessica Griscavage, a senior travel adviser and the founder of Runway Travel.

3. Consider activity levels, mobility needs and downtime

Shelby Dziwulski, founder and CEO of the Denver-based travel company Authenteco explains that it is important to understand the limitations at your destination related to physical activity, safety and mobility. “It really does change where you’re sending people,” she says. For example, if you have mobility needs she might suggest a location that has accessibility features such as elevators or wheelchair ramps instead of a place with a lot of stairs or cobblestone roads. Another key factor is incorporating breaks or downtime into your trip. No matter your age, if you don’t take a break you’ll be too tired to enjoy the trip. “For any family travel, you have to add some downtime,” Griscavage says.

4. Consider these trips for skip-generation travel

You can take a skip-generational trip anywhere, but experts suggest these types of trips are typically set up to accommodate you.

Exploring ancestry and heritage

Heritage tourism , a type of travel that traces your roots , has become popular in recent years due to DNA services that track your lineage. “I think it’s a great opportunity to learn more about yourself and the world that you’re in at the same time,” Shapiro says.

Before your heritage trip, you can research your genealogy and then meet relatives or travel to places based on your ancestry. “It’s not until you’re actually there tasting the local food and seeing the sights that you understand that location in that intrinsic way. It can change the way that you think about yourself,” Newman says.

Ocean or river cruises

Cruises are an all-inclusive accommodation and meal option that easily allow you to see multiple destinations. “You unpack once and you get to visit multiple countries,” says Griscavage. Cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean Cruises , Norwegian Cruise Line and Disney Cruise also offer group activities, entertainment and excursions. Kids or teen clubs offered on some cruises could provide a chance for the grandparent to take a break if needed. Another bonus is that grandparents can easily keep track of their grandchild on river cruises such as A-ROSA Cruises , Uniworld or AmaWaterways . “It’s a contained and safe environment,” says Newman.

All-inclusive resorts

Similar to a cruise vacation, an all-inclusive resort , such as Beaches , Club Med or Nickelodeon Resorts , offers activities and entertainment in a hotel instead of on a cruise ship. Many of these resorts also offer a kid or teen club. If you get seasick or prefer to stay in one location, this may be a better option than a cruise.

A ranch trip offers a Western lifestyle experience including fishing, horseback riding, hiking and more. Newman explains that ranches, like Devil’s Thumb Ranch , Gros Ventre River Ranch and Tanque Verde Ranch , are a great way to get together in a secure environment but still have an outdoor adventure that leads to bonding with one another.

Safaris like Good Earth Tours , Australian Wildlife Journeys and Micato Safaris allow you to travel to a natural animal habitat. “Safaris are great, because you have a guide with you the whole time,” says Dziwulski. “The children get to see animals every day, which is an engaging, once-in-a-lifetime, memorable [experience]. But you have a guide with you all the time to cater to all of your needs.”

Group tours

Group tours are a popular option for skip-generational trips arranged by a travel agent. Road Scholar is a group tour company that focuses on experiential learning. It and Intrepid Travel offer specific trips for grandparents and grandchildren traveling together. Rick Steves’ Europe family tours are another group tour option. “We take care of all the planning and all the logistics, so you don’t have to think about what you need to plan ahead of time,” says Kelsey Knoedler Perri, director of public relations for Road Scholar.

Christina Applegate Says She Walked 9,000 Steps a Day Without Cane During Family Trip

Christina Applegate far exceeded her own expectations for herself during a recent vacation.

Applegate, 52, who has been candid about her battle with multiple sclerosis since her 2021 diagnosis , shared the win during the Tuesday, April 9, episode of her and Jamie-Lynn Sigler ’s “MeSsy” podcast.

“I ended up walking. I couldn’t believe it. The first couple of days I walked with my cane and then I started to feel like that was actually hindering me a little bit in some weird way,” Applegate said of the family trip to The Netherlands and Paris. “All of a sudden this, like, strange superpower took over and I just ended up walking without my cane the whole rest of the time and was amazed by it.”

The Dead to Me alum noted that her level of activity surprised her, as she hasn’t “gone over maybe 2,000 steps in a day” in two years.

“And I was looking at my Fitbit and it was like 9,000 [steps] a day,” she said.

Applegate described the “great” getaway as a “big family get-together” and noted that her husband, Martyn LeNoble , has family in the Netherlands.

The update comes after Applegate admitted during an episode of the podcast earlier this month that she hadn’t “taken a shower in three weeks” because she was unable to stand up in the shower due to her MS symptoms.

“[I have] insane tingling that just has spurts of tingles that are weird coming from, like, my butt down,” Applegate explained. “I haven’t slept for 24 hours because my eye is doing something weird where every time I close my eye to go to sleep my right eye starts to shift.”

She continued: “[I] definitely am going to have to go in and see someone because it’s a little scary and freaking me out that my eye is going to burst out of my face or something. I’m a little concerned about that, and my legs have never been this bad, so I don’t know what’s going on.”

“You got out of your element. You and I spoke briefly and you mentioned to me it was almost like a purpose that you had every day [and] that you were able to see how much more you could physically do,” she said. “And I think that’s really important for you to realize.”

Applegate admitted that the “devastation” of her diagnosis sometimes takes over “to the point where I don’t want to try.” She shared that although she was on her feet more than she anticipated during the trip, it was “hard” to accept her slower pace.

“It was hard seeing everyone’s backs,” she said. “Just kind of being the little caboose the whole time, which, you know, is a hard feeling. But then everyone kind of saw that and then would try to stick with me and make me feel like we could walk at my pace too. So, I felt good about it.”

President Biden on Monday announced a large-scale effort to help pay off federal student loans for tens of millions of American borrowers, seeking an election-year boost by returning to a 2020 campaign promise that was blocked by the Supreme Court last year.

Mr. Biden’s new plan would reduce the amount that 25 million borrowers still owe on their undergraduate and graduate loans. It would wipe away the entire amount for more than four million Americans. Altogether, White House officials said, 10 million borrowers would see debt relief of $5,000 or more.

“While a college degree still is a ticket to the middle class, that ticket is becoming much too expensive,” Mr. Biden said during a speech to a small but enthusiastic audience filled with supporters. “Today, too many Americans, especially young people, are saddled with too much debt.”

Mr. Biden announced the plan in Madison, Wis., the capital of a critical swing state and a college town that symbolizes the president’s promise to make higher-education affordability a cornerstone of his economic agenda.

But it is a promise he has so far failed to achieve, largely because of legal challenges from Republicans and other critics. They accuse Mr. Biden of unlawfully using his executive authority to enact a costly transfer of wealth from taxpayers who have not taken out federal student loans to those who have.

Officials did not say how much the new plan would cost in coming years, but critics have said it could increase inflation and add to the federal debt by billions of dollars.

Mr. Biden said his new effort would help the economy by removing the drag of enormous debt from people who would otherwise not be able to buy a home or pursue a more economically sound future.

“We’re giving people a chance to make it,” Mr. Biden said. “Not a guarantee. Just a chance to make it.”

Mr. Biden’s announcement was a presidential do-over. In the summer of 2022, he put in motion a plan to wipe out $400 billion in student debt for about 43 million borrowers. That was blocked by the Supreme Court , which said he exceeded his authority. In the months since, Mr. Biden has waived small amounts of debt using existing programs. But now he is attempting a larger effort closer to the scale of his first try.

The original plan relied on a law called the HEROES Act, which the administration argued allowed the government to waive student debt during a national emergency like the Covid pandemic. The justices disagreed after Republican attorneys general and others challenged the debt waiver plan.

The new approach is different.

For months, Mr. Biden’s Education Department has been developing regulations using a long process authorized by the Higher Education Act. Instead of an across-the-board waiver of debt, the new approach targets five groups of borrowers: those whose loans have ballooned because of interest; borrowers who have been paying for decades; those who have economic hardship; people who qualify for existing debt relief programs but have not applied; and people whose loans come from schools that have since been denied certification or have lost eligibility for federal student aid programs.

Administration officials said because the new approach is based on a different law, it is more likely to survive the expected challenges. They said lawyers for the White House and the Education Department have studied the Supreme Court ruling and have designed the new program to make sure it does not violate the principles laid out by the justices.

But lawyers for those who oppose the approach are likely to argue that waiving the debt is unfair to those who already paid back their loans or never took out college loans in the first place. That argument helped sway the justices in the last case.

Neal McCluskey, the director of the Center for Educational Freedom at the Cato Institute, called the new plan “dangerous policy” that is unfair to taxpayers and would cause colleges and universities to raise their prices.

“The Constitution gives Congress, not the president, the authority to enact law, and the Supreme Court has already struck down a unilateral, mass student debt cancellation scheme by the Biden administration,” he said. “It would stick taxpayers with bills for debts other people chose for their own financial advancement.”

The legal challenges will likely take months to resolve, and that could leave the debt relief plan in limbo as voters go to the polls in November to choose between Mr. Biden and former President Donald J. Trump.

Members of Mr. Biden’s administration fanned out across the country on Monday to talk about the new plan, betting that it will rally support among voters who were disappointed that the court blocked the first one, which would have eliminated up to $20,000 in debt for tens of millions of borrowers. Vice President Kamala Harris held a round-table discussion with a teacher, a nurse and a social worker in Philadelphia. Miguel A. Cardona, the education secretary, spoke in New York City.

“We need you to stay in these jobs doing this work,” Ms. Harris said in the library of an elementary school. “And you shouldn’t have to make a decision about whether you serve or are able to pay your bills.”

But beyond the threat of legal action, the president faces steep obstacles just because of the calendar. The new plan has not yet been published in the Federal Register, which will kick off a required, monthslong public comment period before it can take effect. Officials said on Sunday only that they hoped some of the provisions would begin going into effect in “early fall” of this year.

Administration officials hope that the president’s supporters will give him credit for trying, even if many of the borrowers do not end up seeing any relief before they go to the ballot box. Andrew O’Neill, the legislative director for Indivisible, a liberal advocacy organization, praised Mr. Biden’s announcement.

“Progressives have led the fight for student debt cancellation, and Joe Biden has responded,” he said in a statement. “More than 30 million folks will now get relief from Biden’s programs. That’s a huge deal.”

White House officials have been scrambling for months to respond to the anger about student loans among the president’s base. In one poll released last month, more than 70 percent of young people said the issue of student loan forgiveness was “important” or “very important” to them as they make their decision in the 2024 election campaign.

Officials said the five groups of people targeted in the new plan will address most of the egregious issues that some borrowers have with their student loans.

People whose loans have grown beyond the amount they originally borrowed because of interest would have up to $20,000 of that interest wiped away, leaving them to repay only the amount they originally borrowed. People making less than $120,000 a year, or couples making less than $240,000, would qualify to have all of their interest forgiven.

Officials said that 23 million people would most likely have all of their interest-related balances waived from that provision.

About two million borrowers who already qualify to have their student loans waived under existing programs have not applied for relief. Under the new rules, the Education Department would be authorized to cancel the debt for those people without their having to apply.

People who took out federal student loans for undergraduate degrees and began repaying them more than 20 years ago would automatically have the debt canceled under the new plan. Graduate students who borrowed money and began repaying 25 years ago would have their debt canceled.

Officials said that about 2.5 million people would qualify under that rule.

People who borrowed money to attend colleges that have since lost their certification or their eligibility to participate in the federal student aid program would have their debt canceled. Officials did not say how many people that would affect. And people who are especially burdened with other expenses — such as high medical debt or child care — could apply to have their student loans forgiven.

Officials did not estimate how many people might qualify for what they called the “hardship” programs.
