Stephen Williams wins Tour Down Under 2024 and final stage in the Adelaide Hills
Welshman Stephen Williams has won this year's Tour Down Under in South Australia after a thrilling final stage in the Adelaide Hills.
Key points:
- Stephen Williams won the final stage and was crowned the overall winner of Tour Down Under
- Jhonatan Narvaez placed second and Isaac del Toro came in third
- Williams put in a final burst to cross the finish line
The Israel-Premier Tech rider went into the day leading on a countback from Scottish hope Oscar Onley, who had beaten him in the penultimate stage up Willunga Hill on Saturday.
Several other riders were also a chance for victory, including former leader Isaac del Toro.
Riders faced a challenging 128-kilometre trek from the inner suburban Unley up to Mount Lofty in the Adelaide Hills.
It was initially a game of cat and mouse, with the leading contenders content to sit back in the peloton for much of the day.
It allowed breakaways to regularly get away from the main bunch, with South Africa's Stefan De Bod at one stage in the overall race lead.
However with four kilometres to go the peloton had caught up, with team tactics to prove critical to the finish.
Del Toro made a move with less than two kilometres to go, putting the challenge to Williams and the other contenders.
It didn't last, with Williams seeing his opportunity with 250 metres to go, putting in a withering final burst to finish first and secure the Tour victory.
Jhonatan Narvaez was second, with del Toro third in the stage, a result repeated for the overall placings.
"That finish was perfect for me, it's punchy, it's just I've got a knack for being able to hold and hold and hold. Luckily I was able to get on the wheel, read the situation and capitalise," Williams said immediately after the finish.
"Oh what a stage, over the moon honestly, the support the team have given me in the last two days, incredible. I can't thank them enough.
"Just how hard this sport is and to win races, they don't come round very often and to do it here in Australia, first (UCI) World Tour race for the season is fantastic."
It's Williams' biggest professional moment and sets him up well for the 2024 season.
"Really proud to come down here and start the season like this on the front foot, head back now to Europe and continue on," he said.

Stephen Williams wins dramatic final stage and first Tour Down Under title
- Welshman secures overall victory in dramatic finish
- Debutant becomes first European winner since 2013
Welshman Stephen Williams has won the final stage of the Tour Down Under to also confirm his overall victory.
Williams was in a front group of five riders who fought out the hilltop finish at Mt Lofty in the Adelaide Hills on Sunday. After a series of attacks on the 3km climb to the finish, Williams timed his charge to the line perfectly.
“Brilliant – what a stage. I’m really proud to come down here, start the season on the front foot and head back to Europe now, continue on,” Williams said immediately after the finish.
“That finish (Mt Lofty) is perfect for me – it’s so punchy. I read the situation, opened up with 250m to go and everyone’s legs were dead by then – I thought if I got the jump, I’d be in with a good chance.”
Asked for his thoughts at the finish, Williams said “everything goes through your mind”. “How hard this sport is – to win races, they don’t come around very often,’’ he said. “To do it here in Australia, first WorldTour race of the season, is fantastic.”
This is Williams’ debut at the Santos Tour, and he is also the first European overall winner of the race since 2013. It is a significant boost for the team, which was relegated from the WorldTour at the end of the 2022 season.
Williams also has struggled for consistency in his career, and this is the first time the climbing specialist has won a WorldTour stage race. His Israel-Premier Tech team boss Daryl Impey, from South Africa, won the Tour in 2018 and ‘19.
There is a strong Australian connection with Williams’ win – his team captain for this event has been Simon Clarke, and Nick Schultz also made his Tour debut. The Israel-Premier Tech rider took the overall lead on Saturday, when he finished second, immediately behind young Scot Oscar Onley, on the hilltop finish at Willunga.
Ecuador’s Jhonatan Narvaez finished second on the stage and was also second overall, nine seconds behind Williams. Onley, who was tied for the overall lead with Williams on time, dropped to fourth overall.

Mexico’s 20-year-old sensation Isaac del Toro, who led the Tour earlier in the week and attacked just before Williams’ decisive surge, finished third in the stage and was third overall at 11 seconds.
National team rider Damien Howson was the only Australian in the top 10 overall, finishing ninth. It proved a barren home tour for top Australian team Jayco AlUla, with no stage wins and their main overall hope Simon Yates finishing sixth.
Last week, young Australian star Sarah Gigante won the women’s Tour Down Under after a blistering attack on the iconic Willunga Hill climb secured victory.

Down Under Classic: Jhonatan Narvaez wins from the break
Sprinters miss out in Tour Down Under warm-up criterium
Jhonatan Narváez (Ineos Grenadiers) won the Down Under Classic in central Adelaide after the breakaway managed to hold off the sprint teams at the line.
Some sprinters caught the back of the break of six but it was too late for them to thwart the Ecuadorian, who crossed the line ahead of Natnael Tesfazion (Lidl-Trek) and Isaac Del Toro (UAE Team Emirates), with fellow break rider Harry Sweeny (EF Education-EasyPost) just missing out on the podium at the criterium on the 1.35km circuit in central Adelaide. "Really I didn't expect the breakaway to survive today .... but it was important to never lose the motivation to win the race," said Narváez.
It was a close call with the six break riders, which also included Gil Gelders (Soudal QuickStep) and Oscar Onley (dsm-firmenich PostNL). They hit the finish line just before Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain Victorious) won the bunch sprint to take seventh.
"That was the plan, to make the sprint for Elia, but I was in the front and in the end it was a bit easier to stay in the front than come from the back," said Narváez.
The one hour and one lap race started and finished on Wakefield Street, in central Adelaide, near the Tour Village and the Hilton hotel were riders and staff stay. Last year's criterium winner, Caleb Ewan, was surprisingly absent after suffering i the heat during training but is expected to line-up at the Tour Down Under on Tuesday. The criterium kicked off with an attack from veteran Bauke Mollema (Lidl-Trek). He was soon caught and for 30 minutes attacks came and were caught as riders blew away some cobwebs, shook out any remains of their jet lag and tried to animate the race.
Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal-Quick Step) spent a lap off the front but Bora-Hansgrohe took control for new sprinter Sam Welsford, with few other teams willing to help them.
The break formed at the midpoint of the race, with Del Toro attacking again after already taking an early intermediate sprint. The young Mexican clearly had orders to make a name for himself on his professional debut.
Narváez joined Del Toro on the attack, as did Jack Rootkin-Gray (EF Education-EasyPost), Gil Gelders (Soudal Quick-Step) and Oscar Onley (dsm-firmenich PostNL), then Natnael Tetsfazion and Harry Sweeny (EF Education-EasyPost) jumped across too.
Bora-Hansgrohe let them go and so a team pursuit match began.
The break never opened a gap of more than 15 seconds and the seven Bora domestiques struggled to close down the attackers.
The gap came down as the laps ticked down but not fast enough and the attackers sensed a real chance of victory.
The peloton came up to the back of the attack as the line neared but the sprinters and their teams missed out. Narváez sprinted to victory ahead of Tesfazion to celebrate a surprise but welcomed early victory.

The marquee event of the PGA Tour season has arrived. The top 144 players on the PGA Tour will tee it up on The Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass, the home of The Players Championship since 1982.
The Pete Dye design features the world-famous 17th hole, a par-3 almost surrounded by water. The course never fails to entertain and surely, it will amuse golf fans again this week.
So, let’s get to the 2024 Players Championship odds.
The Players Championship Odds
Every year, The Players Championship prides itself on having, “The strongest field in golf.” This week is no different, despite the lack of LIV golfers present.
Here are the current odds for players to win, per DraftKings:
- Scottie Scheffler +500
- Rory McIlroy +1200
- Xander Schauffele +2200
- Viktor Hovland +2200
- Justin Thomas +2200
- Will Zalatoris +2500
- Patrick Cantlay +2500
- Hideki Matsuyama +2500
- Max Homa +2800
- Wyndham Clark +3000
- Ludvig Åberg +3000
- Shane Lowry +3500
- Sam Burns +3500
- Jordan Spieth +3500
The Players Championship Predictions
Water comes into play on all 18 holes at TPC Sawgrass, which helps make this one of the most unpredictable tournaments of the season.
Despite that, top players have emerged victorious since 2019, when The Players returned to its March spot on the calendar. Scottie Scheffler , Cameron Smith, Justin Thomas, and Rory McIlroy are the four most recent winners at TPC Sawgrass. At the time of their victories, these players’ average Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) was 5.25.
Scheffler re-established himself as the top player in the world after his five-shot win a season ago.
Max Homa primed for another top-finish
After inexplicably missing the cut at the WM Phoenix Open, Max Homa has put together two solid performances at the Genesis Invitational and the Arnold Palmer Invitational, tying for 16th and eighth, respectively.
Homa putted very well at Bay Hill , ranking third in strokes gained putting. But overall, his short game has shown up in big spots this season. He ranks 10th in scrambling and 15th in bogey avoidance.
You need to avoid the big numbers at TPC Sawgrass, and Homa has done that so far in 2024.
Plus, he played well there last year, tying for eighth—it would have been a top-5 if not for his water-ball on 17. Homa doubled his penultimate hole, finishing at 8-under for the championship.
We like him to finish in the top 10 once again at +260. If you are really feeling the Homa hype, the price for a top 5 finish is pretty nice at +550.
Min Woo Lee rebounds after tough weekend at Bay Hill
Min Woo Lee was our value pick at last week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational, and he got off to a solid start with an opening 3-under 69.
But the beast that is Bay Hill stumped the young Australian over the weekend, as Lee carded rounds of 73, 76, and 73 to tie for 44th.
Still, Lee is one of the most talented young players in golf, and that was on display at last year’s Players Championship. He played in the final pairing alongside Scheffler, trailing him by two shots at 12-under through 54 holes.
His final 18 did not come as easily, as he shot a 4-over 76 to ultimately tie for 18th. Yet, Lee has proven that he can hit any shot required of him, a necessity to succeed at TPC Sawgrass.
If you are feeling really dangerous, you can get Lee to win at +11000. But we like him to finish in the top 10 at +500.
Viktor Hovland, Collin Morikawa struggle again
Two of the game’s top stars have struggled so far in 2024.
Viktor Hovland has changed golf coaches again and is now working on his swing with Grant Waite.
In addition, his improved short game has completely abandoned him. So far this season, Hovland ranks 173rd in strokes gained around the green and 144th in scrambling percentage.
A season ago, when Hovland won the FedEx Cup , he ranked 86th in strokes gained around the green and got up and down successfully 62% of the time—ranking 48th.
Perhaps that explains why the Norwegian has not come close to finishing in the top 10 so far this season. We do not anticipate him finding his form on a course where trouble lurks everywhere.
The same can be said for Collin Morikawa , who missed the cut for the second time this season at Bay Hill.
Morikawa made two double bogies and two other bogies over his first six holes on Friday, leading to an 8-over 80. He missed the cut by three shots.
His short-game metrics are poor, too. He currently ranks 100th in strokes gained around the green and 135th in strokes gained putting.
If you are trying to re-discover your game, TPC Sawgrass is a hard place to do so.
Players Championship Long Shot
Since the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in early February, Tom Hoge has quietly been one of the best players on the PGA Tour.
Hoge—not Scheffler—ranks first on the PGA Tour in strokes gained approaching the green and first on tour in proximity to the hole.
His superb iron play, which is required at TPC Sawgrass, has produced good results, too.
He tied for 6th at Pebble Beach, 17th at the WM Phoenix Open, and then finished solo 8th at Riviera to wrap up a successful West Coast swing.
His first event in Florida did not go as well, as he tied for 28th at the Cognizant Classic. However, he bounced back with a solid finish at Bay Hill, tying for 12th.
Once again, he led the Arnold Palmer Invitational field in strokes gained approaching the green. But his driver and putter let him down, which explains why he finished at 3-under.
But if he can keep it in play off the tee, and drain some putts at TPC Sawgrass, Hoge could very well emerge as an unlikely winner. He is +5500 to win, but we like him to finish in the top 5 at +1200 the best.
The Players Championship Pick
Fresh off his dominant win at the Arnold Palmer Invitational , we like Scottie Scheffler to win The Players Championship for the second consecutive year.
Simply put, Scheffler is playing in a league of his own. He leads the tour in scoring average, strokes gained overall, and strokes gained off the tee. He has hit 78% of his greens in regulation, also ranking at the top of the PGA Tour.
His recent play is reminiscent of Tiger Woods , and Scheffler will achieve something that not even Woods has done this week: repeat at TPC Sawgrass.
In fact, no player has ever repeated as The Players Champion. But we like Scheffler to become the first player to do so, relying on his superior play tee-to-green and his new mallet putter to win yet again.
He is +500 to win, which, frankly, might be too low of a price.

Moscow River
Moskva river has the form of a snake and is the main waterway of Moscow, consisting of a cascade of reservoirs. Within the city, Moskva river is 80 km long, 120 m - 200 m wide and up to 14 m deep. The narrowest part of the river is the Kremlin area in the city center, and the most extensive is around the Luzhniki Stadium in the south.
Bridges in Moscow
Undoubtedly, bridges and embankments are among the most scenic spots and main attractions of Moscow. Plus, they are so romantic.
- Bolshoy Kamenny Bridge – Great Stone Bridge – is the main bridge of Moscow . The first stone bridge was constructed here in the 17th century.
- Patriarshy Bridge is one of the youngest pedestrian bridges, built in 2004. The bridge connects the iconic Christ the Saviour Cathedral with funky Bersenevskaya embankment, extremely popular place among locals for its trendy art galleries, cafes and panoramic views. Patriarshy Bridge used to be a shooting location for ex-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's New Year speech to the nation.
- Borodinsky Bridge, erected in honor of the 100th anniversary of the glorious victory in the Battle of Borodino (which every Russian kid knows about), a fierce legendary battle during the Russo-French war of 1812.
- Bagration Bridge one of the pedestrian bridges with most picturesque views of the Moskva River with its numerous upper-level observation platforms. The bridge was erected to celebrate the 850th anniversary of Moscow city in 1997.
- Krymsky Bridge used to be in Top 5 Europe’s longest bridges some 100 years ago. The bridge got its name after the ancient Krymsky ford which Crimean Tartars used to invade Moscow in the 16 th century.
Embankments of Moscow
Moscow river boats 37 embankments, the most popular being Kremlevskaya, Sofiyskaya, Pushkinskaya, Vorobyovskaya and Kolomenskaya.
You can get the most spectacular views of the Kremlin from Kremlevskaya and Sofiyskaya embankments.
- Pushkinkaya embankment is the most romantic in Moscow. It meanders along Gorky Park and Neskuchnyi garden and is rich for all kinds of entertainment as well as cozy nooks, including Olivkovy beach, the famous Zeleny theater as well as a pier for river cruisers.
- Vorobyevskaya embankment is part of Sparrow Hills nature reserve. This place opens a beautiful panorama of the river and city from the observation deck and is considered to be the place for taking serious decisions in life.
- Embankment in Kolomenskoye Museum-Reserve has a special charm due to its peculiar geographical relief. The boat trip around Kolomenskoye would be the most peaceful in your life.
- Taras Shevchenko embankment is popular among photographers for its modern Moscow City skyscrapers. Highly recommended for your night boat trip.
- Embankments of Moscow are the pride of the capital. A distinctive feature of each of the promenades is its architecture and beautiful views. In addition, almost all the embankments of Moscow have a rich history and a lot of notable buildings.
Different epochs
Taking a walk along the Moskva River by boat, you will witness the architecture of Moscow from different eras and styles. Archaeological studies indicate that already in the XI century there stood a fortified settlement on Borovitsky hill, which is now called the Kremlin. Little fortress could not accommodate all the residents of the rapidly growing city, and the Grand Duke ordered the construction of a new Kremlin, larger than the former.
Boat trip around Kolomenskoe Park
Moscow river boat trip starts from the pier Klenovy (Maple) Boulevard and provides reat views of Nicholas Perervinsky monastery.
Nicholas Perervinsky monastery was founded at the time of the Battle of Kulikov (1380). The monastery, got its name from the surrounding area – “Pererva”, which can be translated like “tear off” and because of the location – here it abruptly changed its course, turning to Kolomna, standing on the opposite bank.
Nowadays Kolomenskoye is State Art, Historical, Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve, which doors are open to everyone who wants to get in touch with the ancient history of Russia.
Take a break from the big city hustle in the shady parks and gardens of the Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve. Don’t miss a wonderful Church of the Ascension and Tsar Alexey’s Palace in Kolomenskoye!
Monasteries and temples
- Novospassky Monastery
- Founded in the 13th century on the site where now is located the Danilovsky monastery. After a few decades, in 1330, Ivan Kalita moved the monastery onto the Borovitskii hill of the Kremlin. However, in the 15th century, Spassky Monastery again moved, this time to a more spacious place on Krasnoholmskaya waterfront.
- Church of St. Nicholas in Zayaitskom
- Erected in the middle of the XVIII century in baroque style. The building survived after the 1812 fire, but the utensils were destoyed. Parishioners collected donations and restored the temple on their own. In Soviet times, it was closed and re-opened only in 1992.
- Cathedral of Christ the Savior
- The church was originally erected in honor of the victory over Napoleon and was being under construction for long 44 years. Notoriously demolished in 1937 to be a giant swimming pool under open sky. The current building was constructed in 1990s. It is the tallest and one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world.
- The temple was built in 1679-82, during the reign of Tsar Fedor Alekseevich, in late Muscovite Baroque style and can be characterized as bonfire temple. Each gable is a symbol of a heavenly fire.
- Novodevichy Convent
- The most famous concent and monastery in Moscow, presumably founded in 1524. Novodevichy’s status has always been high among other monasteries, it was in this monastery where the women of the royal blood, the wives of Tsars and local rulers of Moscow were kept in prison as nuns.
- St. Andrew’s church (male acts as Compound Patriarch of Moscow)
- St. Andrew’s church stands right on the slopes of the Sparrow Hills, on the way down to the Moskva River, on the territory of the Nature Reserve “Sparrow Hills”. The monastery is small in size but is very cozy. It’s situated in a quiet courtyard surrounded by temples, fruit trees and flowers.

She’s spinnin’ like a girl in a brand-new dress .
While in Singapore for her series of Eras Tour shows last week, Taylor Swift managed to squeeze in a little time for a date with Travis Kelce , as seen in footage shared by fan account @swifferupdates on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday.
For the couple’s casual night out at a local mall, Swift wore Alice + Olivia’s Adara minidress — which is currently on sale for a whopping 63% off at Rue La La, bringing its price down from $495 to just $180.
Alice + Olivia Adara Minidress
The classic jacquard LBD features a bustier-style boned bodice, spaghetti straps, flirty flared skirt and back zipper closure, making it an ideal pick for a hot date.
And while Swift’s black version is currently sold out almost everywhere, it’s still in stock at Rue La La in most sizes. (For now, that is.)
If you’re looking for a little more color, the Adara dress is also available in royal blue at several other retailers — and yes, it’s similarly on major sale .
It’s not the only style statement Swift made while in Singapore; while posing for a sweet backstage snap with Blackpink superstar Lisa, the “Cruel Summer” singer kept her home city close to her heart in an Anine Bing “New York” sweatshirt teamed with comfy denim cutoffs.
Kelce was in the audience for not one , but two of Swift’s shows in the Southeast Asian country. And following her six-night residency at Singapore’s National Stadium, the couple flew halfway around the globe to make it to Madonna’s exclusive Oscars afterparty together.
Thanks to the Gucci-sponsored event’s stringent no-cameras policy, we may never find out what Swift wore to the star-studded soirée — but we doubt it’s something mere mortals could score online at a discount.

- RACE REPORT: Down Under Classic
There was no stopping Narvaez
Ineos Grenadiers Jhonatan Narvaez issued a huge warning to Santos Tour Down Under GC contenders when he claimed the Down Under Classic on Saturday night.
However, the 26-year-old Ecuadorian Giro D’Italia 2020 stage winner predicted that new WorldTour rider, Mexico’s Isaac del Toro is the man to watch during the WorldTour stage race. Del Toro was impressive on his debut for UAE Team Emirates winning three of the four preme sprints before Narvaez earned the major prize on the Adelaide city street circuit. “He (del Toro) is a GC contender,” Narvaez told Seven Plus. “It was a really fast circuit. “It was important to never lose the motivation to win the race. “To start the season like this is really nice.” While Narvaez celebrated a perfect victory, Caleb Ewan’s absence from the race was a major concern. Australia’s sprint sensation, was a surprise omission for his return to Team Jayco AlUla.
Ewan was named on the official 140 riders start list before the men’s WorldTour teams blew out the 2024 preseason cobwebs on the 1.35km circuit. However, the five-time Down Under Classic champion wasn’t on the start line after he claimed the national criterium title earlier this year. Ewan, 29, was also a no-show at Friday night’s team presentations before team officials declared they hope to have the eight-time stage winner of the Santos Tour Down Under ready for the Ziptrak Stage 1 Tanunda to Tanunda. With Ewan out of contention, the peloton eased into race mode on Wakefield Street, headed east for a left turn at Pulteney Street, onto Flinders Street, towards King William Street before another left turn towards the finish line. Riders and officials were probably enjoying the cooler conditions of Saturday night racing but as dusk approached blustery winds tested the WorldTour riders’ bike handling skills before conditions calmed.
Down Under Classic Prime sprint results:
10 minutes: Ziptrak prime sprint #1: Isaac del Toro (UAE Team Emirates) 20 minutes: Ziptrak prime sprint #2: Guillarme Boivin (Israel-PremierTech) 30 minutes: Ziptrak prime sprint #3: Isaac del Toro (UAE Team Emirates) 40 minutes: Ziptrak prime sprint #4: Isaac del Toro (UAE Team Emirates)
