Live at Sea With These 5 New Residential Ships

  • December 26, 2021

new cruise ship to live on

Living at sea might have been an unattainable dream for many just some months ago. But with five new players entering the market, it may be high time for the nomads to start weighing their options.

Cruise Industry News has gathered everything we know about the residence-at-sea projects set to come to fruition soon.

MV Narrative Operator: Storylines Delivery Target: 2024 Capacity: 547 residences

After first planning to purchase a second-hand cruise ship, Storylines decided to construct a purpose-built residential ship in the end. The new vessel – called the MV Narrative – was ordered in 2021 and is being built at the Brodosplit shipyard in Croatia.

The ship features fully furnished residences ranging from 237 sq. ft. to 2411 sq. ft., priced between $300,000 and over $8 million for a premium two-level penthouse suite. The MV Narrative is set to enter service in 2024.

According to Storylines, the owners and invited guests will have the opportunity to live a “sustainable life of luxury and freedom at sea.” Features include waterfront marina, microbrewery, art studio, hydroponic gardens and more.

Positioned as “the greenest ship in the market,” the MV Narrative will use LNG fuel along with innovative reusable energy technologies and energy storage and recovery systems.

Dark Island Operator: Clydebuilt Delivery Target: 2025 Capacity: 101 residential suites

The Dark Island is ready for production at the River Clyde in Scotland, aiming to start operations in 2025. The vessel will be run by the family-owned Clydebuilt and feature 101 residential suites.

The ship’s suites span over eight decks and are now on sale, with prices varying between 8 million and 110 million British pounds.

Each accommodation has its own cooking facilities, but the ship also boasts three restaurants with chefs drawing inspiration from Scotland’s classic dishes and regions.

The Dark Island also has a spa, a salon where manicures and pedicures can be done, a hydrotherapy pool, a fitness and wellbeing center, and more.

Njord Operator: Ocean Residences Delivery Target: 2025 Capacity: 117 residences

The M/Y Njord – which was ordered in 2021 – is set to enter service in 2025. The 289-meter residential yacht will feature 117 residences once it’s constructed at its shipyard, Meyer Werft.

According to the ship’s operator Ocean Residences, the Njord is designed to meet “the strictest environmental regulations,” both at delivery and in the future.

The vessel will be powered by dual-fuel engines, with tank capacity for marine gas oil and LNG, batteries for hybridization, heat recovery systems and advanced power management systems.

Blue World   Operator: Blue World Voyages Built: TBD Capacity: 40 private residences

Blue World Voyages is planning a hybrid ship concept, with owner residences and passengers. First announced in 2019, the brand was said to be eyeing a second-hand cruise ship to introduce its product.

Original plans called for a 2021 service launch, with seven-day voyages in the Mediterranean targeted at those with an active lifestyle. Activities ranged from golf to snorkeling and kayaking.

The company’s ship would feature 425 berths, offering 200 standard staterooms, 25 single rooms and two upper decks of residences for a total of 40 apartments. The ship would also offer a full deck dedicated to spa procedures and wellness and another deck for sports and fitness.

Somnio Operator: TBD Built: 2024 Capacity: 39 apartments

The Somnio was designed by Tillberg Design of Sweden as a luxury residential yacht. The project is overseen by Captain Erik Bredhe and features 39 onboard apartments with amenities.

The Somnio – described as a yacht liner – is set to enter service in 2024 and will boast a 10,000-bottle wine cellar, restaurants and bars, in addition to an onboard beach club with water sports.

The vessel will also be built with the highest future hygiene and safety requirements in mind, and the owners say that they will have access to “world-class healthcare and medical services.”

The 39 apartments are already on sale, with the procurement happening strictly through a system of invitation or referral.

You Could Permanently Live at Sea on This Residential Cruise Ship

The vessel will navigate the globe indefinitely, and residences start at $1 million..

After a few days of living the high (seas) life aboard a luxury cruise ship, spending time exploring exciting port towns and sampling the all-inclusive restaurants and amenities onboard, you might consider what it would be like to stay on the ship forever.

Sure, you could book a room on a round-the-world sailing , but even then, you’re not really living on a cruise ship.

One residential cruising company, however, is working toward making a permanent seafaring life a viable option. In late 2024, the Croatia-based cruise company Storylines is slated to launch a new residential ship, dubbed MV Narrative , where people can purchase an apartment onboard and sail indefinitely.

The floating community will feature 547 residences, including fully furnished studios with Murphy beds (at 237 square feet), one- to four-bedroom apartments, and two-story penthouses (that range between 1,378 and 1,970 square feet each). The outright purchase price for one of the accommodations starts just shy of $1 million and will go up to $8 million. Like any other home, the residences can be rented out or sold in whatever manner the owner chooses. A select few abodes are also listed for 24-year leases (starting at $600,000, or roughly $25,000 per year). After the initial purchase or lease price, each unit will also be charged a yearly fee, ranging from $65,000 to $200,000, to cover meals, amenities, and maintenance. But once onboard, residents would only need to open their wallets for food, experiences, and trinkets during their time ashore—most everything onboard will be covered by the fees (with the exception of things like premium alcohol, certain medical and veterinary services, childcare, and items from the onboard store).

A one-bedroom cabin aboard MV Narrative

While it’s not an entirely new idea— The World residences at sea has been sailing since 2002, and Somnio , a residential yacht liner, is expected to set sail in spring 2024—it’s currently the least expsensive option for those who wish to live at sea. ( The World and Somnio ’s smallest accommodations have an estimated starting price of $3 million and $11 million , respectively.)

Storylines was founded in 2016 and is run by Alister Punton and Shannon Lee, two men who previously worked in land-based real estate and construction projects. Per the website, MV Narrative is intended to be more a lifestyle choice and less of an extended vacation. As such, Storylines notes that it will interview potential residents to determine whether they’re a fit for the community.

The plans for the MV Narrative include 20 restaurants across 18 decks, a 10,000-book library, three pools, a garden, a bowling alley, a fitness area with a running track, and a microbrewery. The ship will also house some services not commonly found on other cruise ships due to the nature of its offering, such as a post office, hospital, school (for grades up through 12), bank, and office spaces, to make it feel more like an actual city, just at sea. There will also be outdoor pet exercise areas in case residents want to bring their four-legged friends along for the ride.

The vessel is slated to begin its 1,000-night maiden voyage in late 2024. During that initial nearly three-year-long sailing, the ship will visit six continents and will stop at various ports for one to five days at a time.

One 88-day sample itinerary shows the cruise slowly working its way around most of Italy’s coast over the course of a month, including three days in Rome, four days in Palermo (Sicily’s capital city), and single days in San Leone, Sciacca, and Marsala, among other ports. From there, the ship would spend a few days each in Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and Albania, before doing a 24-day deep dive into Greece, and then heading to Turkey. Along the way, there would be “Residents Choice” days, where those aboard could vote on where they’d like to go by using a special phone app for residents.

The slow travel schedule, the company states on its website, is part of its sustainable travel initiative, as being in the harbor for days at a time and going shorter distances between stops burns fewer fossil fuels. Other elements include waste-to-energy tech, growing vegetables in the hydroponic garden, and committing to only using biodegradable or reusable items instead of single-use plastics.

new cruise ship to live on

USA TODAY

You can live on a cruise, sail the world for just $89 per day

A lthough passengers were told they're unable to travel the world on the three-year voyage with Life at Sea Cruises this past November, a new "continuous world cruise" was just announced, and it's starting with three and a half years onboard.

New cruise line, Villa Vie Residences will launch its inaugural cruise service called the Continual World Cruise aboard the Villa Vie Odyssey ship in May, according to a press release .

However, this shouldn't be considered an ordinary cruise, Mikael Petterson, Villa Vie Residences CEO, told USA TODAY, as the vessel will be continuously sailing the world and inviting passengers to live on board as long as they want or simply join specific segments of its global travels.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

"It's a lifestyle, it's your home," Petterson said.

The three and a half years is just the starting point for the cruise to get up and running, and a five-year itinerary is expected to be announced soon.

The eight-deck ship, departing from Southampton, England, on May 15 will visit all seven continents – stopping at 425 ports in 147 countries for a total of 1,301 days. Travelers are slate d to visit countries during major events like Sweden during Midsummer, Brazil during Rio Carnival, and China during the Dragon Boat Festival. The ship will dock in ports from two to seven days.

Since the Villa Vie Odyssey ship is smaller and more intimate than most, it will be "able to reach parts of the world that larger ships cannot access, often docking in the heart of destinations. The ship's flatter hull enables her to navigate inland waterways and rivers too."

How much will it cost?

For the living onboard concept, people can purchase their own villa, which includes food, alcohol, entertainment, room service, laundry and, of course, "taking you around the world," Petterson said.

Petterson compares the concept to owning a yacht, where someone not only buys the ship itself but pays for food and fuel. Prices for cabins start at $99,999 , and it costs $3,500 in fees for two people to live on the ship.

"People live on board. This is their permanent home," Petterson said, adding that the target audience are digital nomads and business owners, pre-retirees and retirees.

Owners' friends and family can also visit and stay in one of the 35 guest cabins for no cost, minus daily port taxes and gratuities. If an owner can't make the sailing, they can rent out their cabin.

So far, there are about 100 firm bookings.

For travelers who can't commit to over 1,000 days of straight sailing, the cruise offers a unique "pay-as-you-go" concept where people can sail for portions of the itinerary. There are 16 segments offered between 35 and 120 days are available for purchase.

Would you spend $14,000 on a cruise? Here's why these travelers splurged.

What is included on the cruise?

The 924-passenger vessel from the former Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines is slated to go under renovation for the next two months. The ship features cascading aft decks and a wrap-around promenade, as well as villas as residences.

A large business center with private offices and conference spaces will help people conduct their meetings from sea. There will also be Starlink and Viasat 3 internet across the ship.

During their leisure time, guests can enjoy an educational culinary center, a golf simulator, three restaurants, eight bars and four lounges, an extended pool with four Jacuzzis, a spa and fitness center and a library.

Last month, Life at Sea Cruises announced it was canceling its sailing around the world right before it started because of "challenges due to investor withdrawal." Petterson said people won't have to worry about the same thing happening to Villa Vie Residences.

"The difference is here, I think, quite frankly, they bit off more than they could chew," he said. "We're spending less than a third than what they spent on their vessel."

He added, "We're in a different position altogether."

The ship will have the same eight neighborhoods as other Oasis-class ships, including Central Park, The Boardwalk and the Pool & Sports Zone.

The 40-plus food and beverage options will include new additions like the Pesky Parrot bar and a themed "mixed reality" dining experience that takes place on a train. A reimagined playscape is another addition, with nets, games, puzzles, slides and climbing walls for junior cruisers. The Grand Hall, inspired by the movie "Aladdin," is designed with dark shades of blue, turquoise and gold and features a golden statue of a magic carpet with Aladdin and Jasmine.

Plaza de Coco replaces Disney Wish's "Frozen" dining experience with a two-night Mexican, "Coco"-themed theatrical dinner show. Another newly built, currently unnamed Disney ship is planned to debut in 2025, as well.

Norwegian Cruise Line: 2025 and beyond

The third Prima-class ship is expected to be approximately 10% larger than the first ship in the class, Norwegian Prima (143,535 gross tons). Crew of the giant Icon of the Seas cruise ship rescues 14 people adrift in the sea

Authorities say the crew of what is considered the world’s largest cruise ship rescued 14 people clinging to a small boat adrift on the ocean

MIAMI -- The crew of what is considered the world's largest cruise ship rescued 14 people clinging to a small boat adrift on the ocean, authorities said.

Passengers aboard the Icon of the Seas captured video of the crew using a small vessel to ferry the group to the safety of the cruise ship on Sunday. The cruise had begun in Miami, and the ship was headed for Honduras when the rescue happened, passengers said.

The cruise ship encountered the small vessel “adrift and in need of assistance," Miami-based Royal Caribbean said in a statement to The Associated Press on Thursday.

“The ship’s crew immediately launched a rescue operation, safely bringing 14 people on board,” the company said. "The crew provided them with medical attention, and is working closely with the U.S. Coast Guard.”

The crew broadcast “Code Oscar, Code Oscar, Code Oscar,” over the loudspeakers around 3 p.m., Alessandra Amodio said in a report on FoxWeather.com.

Amodio said she watched as people on the tiny craft waved a large white flag.

“The boat turned around, and we pulled up as close as we could to them and stopped,” Amodio said. The cruise ship then launched "a small zodiac-type rescue boat to investigate.”

After the rescue, Amodio said the cruise ship's captain announced that the crew had rescued 14 people stranded at sea for eight days.

The Icon of the Seas is considered by cruise industry experts to be the largest cruise ship in the world at the moment, the Miami Herald reported. It can host 5,610 guests and 2,350 crew members. The ship has 2,850 staterooms, 18 guest decks and seven swimming pools.

Royal Caribbean cruise employee arrested after hidden camera found in guest bathroom on Symphony of the Seas

A Royal Caribbean cruise employee has been arrested after allegedly setting up hidden cameras inside passenger bathrooms to spy on young girls.

Arvin Joseph Mirasol, 34, a citizen of the Philippines, was arrested Sunday after a guest aboard the Symphony of the Seas cruise ship found a camera in her bathroom on Feb. 25.

The guest, who was staying in a room with her sister and mother, found the hidden camera when she reached under the sink to grab a roll of toilet paper and found the camera "affixed to the counter underneath the sink," the probable cause affidavit said.

She reported the camera to customer services, and ship security responded to the room.

Symphony of the Seas

Mirasol, an attendant who services the cabin by cleaning, replacing towels and making the bed, was detained on the ship until it docked at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on March 3.

Once the ship docked, Homeland Security Investigations, Customs and Border Protection and the Broward County Sheriff’s Office were alerted and spoke with security and Mirasol.

His electronics, including his phone, an SD card, camera, and USB stick, were investigated that same day. On the USB stick, law enforcement discovered "numerous videos of naked females undressing" as well as child pornography, the criminal complaint affidavit said. One video showed Mirasol himself installing a camera into a guest room's bathroom.

Mirasol admitted in a post-Miranda interview to taping a video camera in guests’ bathrooms when he worked as an attendant and said he'd pleasure himself after retrieving the camera and viewing its footage, the affidavit said.

“Mirasol revealed that he has been placing these cameras in the bathroom since he started working on Symphony of the Seas around December 2023,” the filing said.

He told officers, “I want to control it, but I can’t,” the affidavit said. He said he'd place the cameras in the rooms where there were females 16 years old and older, despite knowing it is illegal to film underage girls.

Mirasol also admitted that while guests were taking a shower, he’d enter the rooms and hide under the bed while recording them naked with his phone, the affidavit said.

Mirasol has been charged with six state charges of voyeurism in Broward County. In the U.S. District Court of Florida, he was further charged with production and possession of child pornography.

NBC News has reached out to the public defender who was appointed to his case.

Royal Caribbean said in a statement: “We have zero tolerance for this unacceptable behavior. We immediately reported this to law enforcement and terminated the crew member, and we will continue to fully cooperate with authorities.”

People who live on cruise ships full time share how they do it: 'It's not just for retired people'

  • Business Insider spoke with three people who live on cruise ships for at least half the year.
  • One remote worker spent 300 days living on a cruise ship and said it cost as much as his apartment.
  • Another cruise ship resident lives for free as a "wife on board."

Insider Today

As the urge for a simpler way of living grows, some cruise companies are offering condos starting at $100,000 . On these ships, people can travel around the world every 3 ½ years. For those who don't have hundreds of thousands of dollars to spend, there are other ways to make a cruise ship your home.

Business Insider spoke with three people with different experiences living on a cruise ship. They spent anywhere from zero to $30,000 a year to enjoy this lifestyle and lived at sea for up to 300 days within a year. Here's what they shared.

Christine Kesteloo lives on a cruise ship half the year for free as a 'wife on board'

High-ranking cruise ship officers often have the opportunity to travel with their spouse. Christine Kesteloo told BI that she and her husband have taken advantage of this perk.

"Before the pandemic, my husband took advantage of this perk as a 'husband on board' while I worked 12-hour days," Kesteloo, who worked as a travel and cruise director before losing her job during the pandemic, said. " Now, I sail with my husband as a 'wife on board.'"

The couple has an extensive history with cruise lines and actually met on a cruise ship. Kesteloo told BI she's been sailing on and off for nearly 12 years, and her husband, a chief staff engineer, has been doing so for 30. They live rent-free and have minimal expenses.

Musician Jack Nolan traveled around the world full time on a cruise ship with his band

Cruise lines offer many jobs that allow workers to travel the world and essentially live rent-free. Jack Nolan, a musician from England, lived for about seven years as a guitarist on cruise lines and shared his story with BI.

"It's amazing to have the opportunity to travel and get paid for it as well," Nolan said. "Our drummer already knew the process of how to get a cruise ship gig , so he led the way."

This year, Nolan left his cruise ship job to embark on a new journey in Los Angeles. He told BI he made about $4,000 a month working and living on cruise ships and said it was easy to save money because his rent and the cost of meals were covered by the company.

Ryan Gutridge budgeted and lived on a cruise ship for 300 days while working remotely

During the pandemic, many white-collar workers were able to radically transform how — and where — they did their jobs. In 2021, Ryan Gutridge, an IT professional, did just that. He booked a September cruise on Royal Caribbean's Freedom of the Seas ship and continued sailing nearly every week for a year.

"I've been told I'm crazy for trying to live full time on a cruise ship , but it's not just for retired people," Gutridge said. "Last year when I started really looking at the numbers and evaluating how much base fare I paid to be on a ship for 300 nights, I found it was almost neck and neck with what I paid for rent and trash service for an apartment in Fort Lauderdale, Florida."

This year, Gutridge budgeted $30,000 to live on a cruise ship full time.

Cho Gao (translated as "Rice Market") is the capital city of Cho Gao huyen. This rural district of Tien Giang Province has a population of around 190,000 inhabitants and covers a total area of 235 km2 (91 ml2). Cho Gao is located in Vietnam's Mekong Delta region.

Best-known tourist attractions located within 5 km of Cho Gao include:

  • Vinh Trang Pagoda (Buddhist temple in My Tho). Giant Buddha statues rise over the grounds of the peaceful temple around a kilometre east of the city centre, where monks maintain a sanctuary, decorated with gilded and carved wood. They provide a home for kids in need and donations are welcome. To get there, head north on Le Loi, then turn right to Nguyen Trai and cross the bridge. Turn left after 400 m to Nguyen Trung Truc. Pagoda's entrance is on the right-hand side, about 200 m from the turnoff.
  • My Tho Market. Spilling out on the street facing Bao Dinh Channel, the market is a typical Vietnamese array of strange smells, exotic fruits, dried fish and doomed animals.
  • Tien Giang Tourist (My Tho). This reliable boat operator offers 3-hour tours to Thoi Son and Phoenix island (95,000d per person when there is a group).
  • My Tho Tourist Boat Station. In a prominent building situated on the riverfront, My Tho Tourist Boat Station shelters several tour companies that offer cruises to neighbouring islands and via the labyrinth of tiny canals. Depending on what passengers book, destinations often include an orchid garden, coconut-candy workshop and honey farm (don't miss the chance to try the banana wine).
  • Night Market (in My Tho). Plonked in front of a floating restaurant, the popular spot packs in diners come evening, with a host of fish stalls and lively hotpot.

Middle East latest: UK warship attacked three times sets sail for mission; Biden has 'no plans' to speak to Netanyahu as rift grows

One of the UK's most advanced warships is heading back to the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden to protect international shipping. Meanwhile, an aid ship loaded with 200 tonnes of food has set sail from Cyprus to Gaza.

We'll bring you more updates on the Israel-Hamas war tomorrow - until then, you can scroll back through this blog for today's updates.

Israel's prime minister has appeared to send a message to allies that have grown increasingly critical of his approach to the war in Gaza.

"You cannot say you support Israel's right to defend itself, and then oppose Israel when it exercises that right," Benjamin Netanyahu said in Washington.

"You cannot say that you oppose Hamas's strategy of using civilians as human shields, and then blame Israel for the civilian casualties that are the result of this Hamas strategy."

Mr Netanyahu said Israel is being held to a higher standard than other countries on civilian casualties, adding: "None of these pressures will stop us."

In a clear message to Joe Biden - who has called out Mr Netanyahu in recent days - the Israeli prime minister said the "overwhelming majority" of Americans stand behind Israel.

"I know that the overwhelming majority of Congress stands with us," he said.

We've been reporting today on Israeli airstrikes in northeastern Lebanon, which the IDF said targeted Hezbollah command centres and launchers.

A Hezbollah official has now said at least one person was killed in the strikes in the town of Safri, the Associated Press said.

They did not say whether the person was a civilian or a Hezbollah member.

A Lebanese security official said at least eight people were wounded.

Eleven Filipino seafarers who survived a Houthi missile attack off Yemen have arrived home in the Philippines.

They had been on board the Barbados-flagged merchant ship True Confidence, which was attacked by rebels last week.

Three sailors, including two Filipinos, were killed in the attack.

The migrant workers' ministry said in a statement the 11 survivors received government help on arriving in Manila.

Crew member Mark Anthony Dagohoy said it was difficult to recall what they went through but he was thankful for the military personnel who rescued them.

"We just want to be with our family," Mr Dagohoy told a news conference.

Two other people who sustained major injuries were recovering in a Djibouti hospital.

They will be flown back to Manila once cleared medically.

The Israeli military has confirmed further airstrikes on northeastern Lebanon today.

It said it had targeted two Hezbollah command centres which were used to store "significant assets" for strengthening the group's weapons arsenal.

The strikes, carried out in the Baalbek area, were in response to a barrage of about 100 rockets from Lebanon into Israel this morning.

The US president has responded to the death of Itay Chen, a dual American-Israeli citizen who was killed during the 7 October Hamas attacks.

It had been thought Mr Chen was being held hostage in Gaza.

"Today, our hearts are heavy. Jill and I are devastated to learn that American Itay Chen was killed by Hamas during its brutal terrorist assault on October 7," Joe Biden said.

He said Mr Chen's father and brother had joined him at the White House in December and spoken about their hope for their family member to be returned.

"No one should have to endure even one day of what they have gone through. At the end of our meeting, they gave me a menorah - a solemn reminder that light will always dispel the darkness, and evil will not win," Mr Biden said.

"I reaffirm my pledge to all the families of those still held hostage: we are with you. We will never stop working to bring your loved ones home."

The Israeli military has confirmed a teenager abducted by Hamas on 7 October died during the attacks.

Itay Chen, 19, was a US-Israeli dual citizen who had served in an IDF tank unit.

He was on active duty at the Nahal Oz army base along with three other soldiers during the attacks.

It was thought Mr Chen was being held hostage in Gaza as Israeli authorities had not previously found evidence of his death.

He has since been declared dead due to new findings and intelligence information.

His body has been taken into Gaza, the IDF said.

Palestinian officials say an Israeli strike on a home in central Gaza has killed 11 people, mainly women and children.

The strike hit early this morning in the city of Deir al Balah.

Records from al Aqsa hospital, where the bodies were taken, show four of those killed were women and five were children.

All were from the same family.

An Associated Press reporter saw the bodies arrive at a local hospital, while footage captured outside showed them wrapped in white cloth and laid on the ground.

The IDF, which rarely comments on individual strikes, has said it tried to avoid harming civilians and accuses Hamas of using them as human shields.

More aid has been dropped into Gaza this morning.

The US and other countries have launched airdrops of aid in recent days, though these efforts are costly and don't meet the mounting needs of those in the Palestinian enclave.

A quarter of Gaza's population of 2.3 million is starving, according to the United Nations.

A Qatari official has admitted a hostage and ceasefire deal is still not close to being agreed upon.

"We are not near to a Gaza ceasefire deal but remain hopeful," foreign ministry spokesperson Majed al Ansari said.

"We are not seeing both sides converging on language that can resolve the current disagreement over the implementation of a deal."

Qatar is working to establish a permanent ceasefire in Gaza rather than a short-term truce, he said.

However, Israel has said any ceasefire must be temporary and that it aims to destroy Hamas.

The Palestinian militant group has said it will release the more than 100 Israeli hostages still in Gaza only as part of a deal that ends the war.
