After the recent announcement of their forthcoming new studio album, synth pioneers Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark (OMD) reveal details of their return to the stage, with the band taking to the globe next year with South Africa tour dates in toe.

Across February & March 2024, OMD will play 22 dates across the UK & Ireland, including their biggest ever London headline show at London’s O2 Arena on March 24th, 2024 on 100% Records. For April next year, the band confirms South Africa tour dates for Cape Town and Joburg as part of the ‘Greatest Hits Tour’.

OMD frontman Andy McCluskey says of the South African leg of the tour: “ It’s been far too long since we played live in South Africa!, so we are really excited to be coming to do concerts in April 2024! ”

The new album sees the band’s most explicitly political record and the crowning achievement of their desire to be both Stockhausen and Abba - born from the impetus to kickstart new explorations during lockdown. A broad, electronic, sonic masterpiece that lyrically tackles the topics of the future, it was predominantly written, recorded, and mixed by both McCluskey & Paul Humphreys (who has recently become a second-time father).

Tickets for the general public will be on sale beginning Wednesday, October 25 at 10 am local time. For additional information on OMD’s SA tour dates, please visit https://breakoutevents.co.za/ .

OMD have sold an astonishing 25 million singles and 15 million albums, which has established them as electronic synthesiser pioneers and one of Britain’s best-loved pop groups. Their 13 albums include reissued ‘Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark’ (1980), ‘Organisation’ (1980), ‘Architecture & Morality’ (1981) and ‘Dazzle Ships’ (1983).

By rights, OMD should be in semi-retirement, performing classics like Enola Gay and Maid Of Orleans on the nostalgia festival circuit like so many peers. Instead, they’ve created a landmark album worthy of their finest work. If real life meant OMD were happy to get help, ‘Bauhaus Staircase’ remains unmistakably the work of a duo who are still perfectly in sync 45 years after their first gig at legendary Liverpool club Eric’s.

Spotify goes on amapiano tour in south africa.

Peter Choge's picture

Spotify  this week hosted an  amapiano  tourism experience dubbed  #SpotifyAmapianoTour .

tour in south africa music

Organised in partnership with South African Tourism, the tour, designed around some of Spotify’s most popular amapiano playlists, sought to highlight South African and amapiano culture to content creators from Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana and South Africa. The tour also aimed to impress on the guests the power of collaborations and how streaming is helping to export local music to the world.

The tour started off with  Amapiano 101   detailing the background of the genre and giving guests an opportunity to experience its origins in townships like Mamelodi before exploring other popular amapiano spots in Soweto.

During the session, one of the genre’s leading artists,  Focalistic , dropped by at Jack Budha in Mamelodi, one of the birthplaces of amapiano, to share the genre’s origin story.

“We would come here and listen to amapiano sets for three hours,” Focalistic said. We wanted to escape from the noise and do our own thing as Africans, speak in our tongue. Amapiano makes an imprint, it’s emotions. Amapiano is spiritual.”

The  Amapiano Grooves  segment showcased the impact of clubs on the genre. Here the visitors got to hear cultural stories like that of Mogodu Monday, the tradition of celebrating the least popular day of the week with mogodu (tripe) and music. The participants also got the opportunity to meet with local artists in the studio to see where the music happens.

Spotify data show amapiano received close to 2 billion streams last year, representing a 143% year-on-year increase. The genre has garnered a huge following, with more than 240 000 playlists featuring amapiano in the title and over 10 million playlists featuring at least one amapiano track. Interestingly, more than 40% of amapiano streams come from listeners outside South Africa, making it the country’s hottest cultural export.

“Amapiano’s unique sound and infectious beats have captivated audiences around the world and is sure to keep fans dancing for years to come,” Spotify’s sub-Saharan Africa managing director, Jocelyne Muhutu-Remy, said. “As more artists emerge and push the boundaries of the genre, there is no doubt that amapiano is set to become a mainstay in the global music scene.”

Nigerian artist WurlD, who also attended the first day of the tour, spoke about why amapiano is so popular around the world: “Music is spiritual, amapiano is spiritual. I was a fan, watching from a distance. Music is energy, what people are experiencing with amapiano is the heart and soul of the people of South Africa.”

Spotify also says that listeners love tuning into the genre on weekday afternoons, with peaks on Friday evenings. Amapiano Grooves , Spotify’s biggest amapiano playlist, is most popular among 18 to 24 year olds, with most listeners hailing from South Africa, the UK, US, Mozambique, Botswana and Zimbabwe.

The legendary iconic Soul and R&B multi award winning international superstar, Freddie Jackson , is set to tour South Africa from 23 September to 1 October 2023. Known for his sensual slow jams and songs that serenade, Freddie Jackson ’ s introspective sides are on full display on “ Love Signals ” (2018), his most recent album. Since the mid-1980s, when the sun went down, the moon rose, the candles were lit, and the wine poured, Freddie Jackson’s classics like ‘ Rock Me Tonight ‘, have been a part of the soundtrack for romance.

With over 15 million copies sold worldwide, Freddie Jackson promises to take his South African fans down memory lane with hits like ‘ You Are My Lady ‘, ‘ Rock Me Tonight ‘, ‘ All I Ever Ask ‘, ‘ Have You Ever Loved Somebody ‘, ‘ Tasty Love ‘ and many more. Thabiso Mogashwa the director of Remoakantse Holdings who recently brought Glenn Jones to South Africa says, “ We always strive to bring international artists that we know to be favourites amongst South Africans. Recently, Glenn Jones hit our shores and his concerts at Sun City were sold out.  We are, once again, bringing the multi award winning Freddie Jackson whose music is loved by many South Africans. We are excited to be the first ones to bring him to South Africa and he is excited as well to be coming to our country for the first time. We encourage his fans to buy the tickets now before the shows are sold out .”

“ I am so excited to be coming to South Africa for the very first time. I have heard so many good stories about this beautiful country and how much the people of Mzansi love my music. Kip Moore, Zac Brown Band to Headline Inaugural Cape Town Country Festival in South Africa: Exclusive

Spurred by Kip Moore ‘s massive touring success in Cape Town and Pretoria last year, South Africa is set to launch what organizers are calling one of the largest country music festivals outside of the United States.

Kip Moore and Zac Brown Band will headline the Cape Town Country Festival on Oct. 26-27 at Cape Town's 60,000-capacity DHL Stadium, which has previously hosted concerts from stars like U2, Foo Fighters, Mariah Carey, Rhianna and Justin Bieber.

"I absolutely love Africa and try to visit every year," Zac Brown said in a statement. "We're so excited that we get to perform at South Africa's first-ever country music festival in October."

The lineup also highlights American musicians including Darius Rucker, Brothers Osborne, Cam, James Johnston, Morgan Wade and Craig Morgan, as well as 10 local South African artists including Ricus Nel, Riaan Benade, Demi-Lee Moore, Juan Boucher, Appel, Ruhan du Toit, Brendan Peyper, Ivan Roux, West and Cheree. Additionally, Roan Ash, who moved to Nashville in 2022, will return to his hometown for the inaugural festival.

Wimpie van der Sandt of Heroes Events, who is also a DJ at BOK Radio, is producing the Cape Town Country Festival, with Red Light Management's Gaines Sturdivant, one of Moore's managers, serving as an executive consultant.

Moore's headlining slot on the festival follows his successful trio of shows in Cape Town and Pretoria in 2023, where Moore sold 44,000 tickets. Van der Sandt was also instrumental in bringing those shows to South Africa.

The origins of Moore's involvement with the festival and in building his audience in South Africa reach back to 2020 when Van der Sandt was introduced to Moore's second studio album, 2015's Wild Ones . Van der Sandt put Moore's song "Heart's Desire" on the radio during primetime hours.

"He said it caught like wildfire and people started calling and emailing trying to figure out who it was," Moore tells Billboard via phone. "Then he did a deep dive into all my records and started playing lots of album cuts that I've always wanted to be singles, like ‘That Was Us' and ‘The Bull.' We had hits over there that we never even played live, like ‘Hey Old Lover' and ‘Tennessee Boy.' So when we played in South Africa, it was unlike anything I'd ever felt from a crowd. It was magical. And it was all from this one guy taking a chance and spinning my records."

"The idea [for Cape Town Country Festival] was born from the success we had with Kip. We knew the synergy between South African music and country music - that wasn't a surprise," Van der Sandt tells Billboard . "When we saw the success we had with Kip, we knew we had a market. In South Africa, on our radio stations, they are used to Don Williams and Kenny Rogers, older country music. There's not a lot of radio stations that play country music. We sort of introduced them to the new country and it took off. There were a lot of people that were skeptical about it, and didn't know what was going to happen."

Moore adds, "The beauty of what Wimpie did is that he doesn't have any gatekeepers he has to get through. If he decides he likes something, he'll roll the dice, take a chance and play it. He's a true music lover. He's a prime example that radio can still lead the way - they don't have to just find out what's streaming and follow it."

Moore worked with Van der Sandt and Sturdivant on imagining the lineup. "I brought up Brothers Osborne - because I felt like if people were responding to what I'm doing, they'll respond to Brothers Osborne. Darius Rucker has played in South Africa before. I said I loved the rawness in Morgan Wade's voice," Moore says, noting their previous collaboration, "If I Was Your Lover," and imagining that they might perform the song together during the festival. "We're super excited about shining a light on South African artists."

The festival further evolves Moore's touring success in the area as well as the vital scene of both country music fans and artists in South Africa. In 2023, Apple Music launched the country music competition series My Kind of Country , which highlighted international competitors. Nearly half of the competitors - including the competition's eventual winner - hailed from South Africa. Moore says that he and his fest co-organizers are "super excited about shining a light on South African artists."

Van der Sandt tells Billboard that they have a three-year agreement with the venue, with aims toward making the festival an annual event, on the scale of country music festivals such as Europe's C2C: Country 2 Country festival and the Tamworth Country Music Festival in New South Wales, Australia.

Tickets for the event go on sale Feb. 16 at ctcfest.net, and will include special payment plans, allowing attendees to purchase tickets and pay over three, six or eight months.

S.Africa's Music Star Tyla Cancels World Tour Due To Injury

  • Order Reprints
  • Print Article

South Africa's Grammy-winning artist Tyla has cancelled her much-anticipated world tour just weeks before it was start due to an injury.

The rising music star, who gained international fame last year with hit single "Water", said she was heartbroken after doctors advised her against proceeding with the tour.

Writing on social media, the 22-year-old said that for the past year she has been "silently suffering" with an unspecified injury that "has tragically worsened".

"I've seen doctors and specialists with high hopes but the pain has only become more agonising as has the severity of the situation," Tyla said on Instagram.

"Words cannot describe my frustration at this pivotal point in my career.

"So please know that my team and I are working diligently on a spectacular show for you as soon as I am recovered and ready to return safely onstage".

What would have been Tyla's maiden global tour was due to kick off in Oslo, Norway, later this month, with stops elsewhere in Europe and North America, including at the iconic Coachella festival in the California desert.

It came on the back of Tyla's meteoric success.

Her hit "Water" made a landmark debut on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, the leading weekly music ranking in the United States, last October.

And in February the song won the Johannesburg-born amapiano artist a Grammy for Best African Music Performance.

"It's hard having to turn down opportunities you've been waiting your whole life for but God has his plan," Tyla wrote on Thursday.

"Water" mixes genres including R&B and amapiano -- itself a blend of house, jazz and lounge music, born in South Africa's townships that is experiencing growing global popularity.

Once a prodigy in European golf, Matteo Manassero earns first tour win in 11 years

  • Copy Link copied

EDENVALE, South Africa (AP) — Matteo Manassero broke through with his first European tour win in nearly 11 years on Sunday, shooting 6-under 66 after a storm delay for a three-stroke victory at the Jonsson Workwear Open.

Once a prodigy in European golf, the now 30-year-old Italian picked up his fifth European tour win by making four birdies in his last four holes to finish at 26 under for the tournament in South Africa.

Thriston Lawrence (63), Shaun Norris (68) and Jordan Smith (68) ended in a tie for second.

Manassero became the European tour’s youngest winner at the age of 17 years and 188 days in 2010 at the Castelló Masters Costa Azahar in Spain. He won four times in a three-year stretch to start his career, with one of the victories coming at the tour’s flagship event — the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

“This is the best day of my life on a golf course for sure,” he said. “It’s been a crazy journey over the last couple of years. I knew that I was getting on the right track but then you never know.”

Manassero was leading by one shot on the 17th when storms prompted a delay of almost 2 1/2 hours in the final round at Glendower Golf Club.

“Even coming down the 18th with a good tee shot, you still have to do some work,” he said. “Golf is a really difficult and tough game so I am just so incredibly happy to be here holding this (trophy) right now.”

Manassero, currently ranked No. 381, had struggled since those first four victories and dropped off the European tour. He only regained his card at the end of last year after some time on the second-tier Challenge Tour.

Manassero shot a career-best 11-under 61 in Friday’s second round.

It was the third consecutive week for the European tour in Africa, and the second week of a co-sanctioned event with the Sunshine Tour.

The European tour will have five tournaments in Asia before starting the European portion of its schedule in late May.
