Christian Tours to Greece

One of Greece's most impressive religious routes is "The Path followed in Greece by Apostle Paul." Paul forms a remarkable personality for the Christian faith, though he never belonged to the cycle of Jesus' 12 Disciples. He spread the word of Christianity more than anybody else and was called "Equal-to-the-Apostles" and "Apostle of the Nations" for this reason.

With Nino Tours to Greece, you will find yourself in significant places connected with Apostle Paul’s missionary journeys. You will visit ageless monasteries of Central Greece with their exquisite specimens of Byzantine art. You will see the impressive ruins of the Acropolis and Philippi, where the first Christians on European soil were baptized by Paul. You will explore Ancient Corinth, which became St. Paul’s refuge for two years. And, of course, you will enjoy delicious traditional Greek cuisine and the most comfortable hotel accommodation available with our Christian holy land tours.

How to thank you for your great job you have performed. Thanks for all your successful efforts, contacts, organization. We had a great time in Greece!

Rev. Fr. K. F. (Nazareth)

Thanks for your kindness and your personal special care you have offered to all of us. Thanks for your spiritual awareness and faithfulness. Excellent job!!

Manuel George N. (USA - Virginia)

Overall a memorable trip. If it was to be done again I would essentially keep the same itinerary. In retrospect maybe bypass Thessaloniki and break the long drive to Corinth at a small overnight inn in one of the smaller towns?

Day 1 - Thessaloniki to Kavala

(Acts 16:9-11)"Come over into Macedonia and help us..." Apostle Paul was praying, asking for the direction of the holy spirit as to which city he should travel to. He arrived in Troas and there he had a dream, sent by the spirit of God. Therefore his trip to Europe began and the first country he visited was Greece. He arrived at Neapolis (Modern city of Kavala) which was situated in Philippi . Neapolis was the city port of Philippi which was named after Phillip II, father of Alexander the Great, and became a very important Roman colony. There, Ap. Paul established the very first Christian church in Europe. One of the highlights of the first day of the tour will be our visit to the river of Lydia , otherwise known as the "Jordan river of Greece". At this place, where Ap. Paul met Lydia and where his so-called prison is situated (Acts 16:40) , we will have the possibility of placing a prayer. We will also visit the "Agora" , the city square forum which was one of the most important places in the city, during Paul's time, and is mentioned in Acts. Return to Thessaloniki for overnight

go to Day 2

Day 2 - Thessaloniki sightseeing, Thessaloniki to Pella, Pella to Vergina

(Acts 17:1)"Now, when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica..." One of the most spiritual churches of the New Testament was in Thessalonica. The tour will start with sightseeing of the city of Thessaloniki. Driving to the old city, we will be able to admire the Byzantine city walls , the white tower , the triumph arch of Galerius and the Rotunda . We will visit the Roman forum , the church of St.Demetrius , who is the patron saint of the city, and the Archaeological museum . After that, we will go to Pella , the new capital of the Macedonian kingdom and the birthplace of Phillip II and Alexander the Great. Our next stop will be at Vergina , the first Capital of the Macedonians, where we can see the amazing artworks of the tomb of Phillip II, father of Alexander the Great. Return to Thessaloniki for overnight

go to Day 3

Day 3 - Thessaloniki to Dion, Dion to Kalambaka

(Acts 17:14-15)"And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul to go as it were to the sea..." We will visit Dion , which was the sacred city of the ancient Macedonians. It was from the port of Dion that Ap. Paul possibly sailed to Athens. Dion is an extensive archaeological park. Its museum houses some of the rarest and most unique statues, reliefs and inscriptions. We will also see some of the most well preserved ancient roads and walls, two early Christian basilicas and finally a few Christian houses and shops of the time of Ap. Paul. Afterwards our trip will take us to Kalambaka , at the base of "Meteora", which has been characterized by Unesco as a "unique phenomenon of cultural heritage". These rocky formations are littered with Byzantine monasteries (14th - 16th century A.D.) Overnight stay in Kalambaka.

go to Day 4

Day 4 - Meteora sightseeing, Kalambaka to Delphi

Our morning will begin with a brief sightseeing of Meteora and a visit to one of the oldest monasteries this beautiful place has to offer. In the afternoon, our trip will take us to Delphi , passing by Thermopylae which was famous for its 480 B.C. battle between the ancient Spartans and the Persians. Delphi is situated on the slopes of Mt. Parnassos and was considered the center of the ancient world (the omphalos of the earth). It was a sanctuary for all and a home to the oracle of god Apollo, Pythia, famous for her prophecies. (Acts 16:16)"...a certain damsel, possessed with a spirit of divination, met with us..." Overnight stay in Delphi

go to Day 5

Day 5 - Delphi sightseeing, Delphi to Athens

In the morning we will commence our tour of Delphi, visiting the archaeological site of the temple of Apollo , its treasuries , the ancient theatre and the stadium , as well as its wonderful museum. There, among many wonders, we'll be able to admire the superb bronze charioteer and the Gallio inscription. In the afternoon we will depart for Athens. Overnight stay in Athens.

go to Day 6

Day 6 - Athens sightseeing

(Acts 17:16-34)"Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry..." In the morning we will begin our sightseeing tour of Athens, which includes the house of parliament , the ancient olympic stadium (a.k.a. Kallimarmaron, Panathenaic Stadium), the temple of Zeus and the Hellenic Academy . We will then go to the Acropolis hill and visit the world famous Parthenon and the Erechtheion . We will continue to the nearby Ares Rock (Areopagus - Mars Hill) where Ap. Paul gave his well known sermon (Acts 17:16-34) . On this historic place, having a very good view of the modern city of Athens, we will have the possibility of prayer for Greece. Afterwards, we will go to the Athenian Agora which was the center of the ancient city where Ap. Paul met with the Epicurean and the Stoic philosophers. Our day's tour will end with a visit to the new Acropolis museum, one of the best worldwide. Free afternoon. Overnight stay in Athens.

Once there, we will begin our tour with the "Canal" and explain, in detail, why Corinth was such a wealthy center in the days of Ap. Paul. We will then visit the archaeological site and walk through the Roman forum where the "Bema" , otherwise known as the judgement seat of Gallio, is situated. We will talk about head covering, women in the church, and "the fountain of living waters", presenting you with details and little known facts. Afterwards we will see the "Erastus" inscription and talk about its meaning, its background story and its role in the history of Ap. Paul in Corinth (Romans 16:23) . We will then visit "acro-Corinth" , where we will talk in depth about its history and its meaning for the ancient world. Moving on, we will go to Kechries (Cenchreae), the eastern port of ancient Corinth at the church of which Phoebe was the deaconess (Romans 16:1) . christian tours in greece

Today we embark on our Journey to the lands of ancient treasures and Christian history with an overnight flight to Turkey. Prepare yourself for a life-changing experience. Get some rest on the flight…Tomorrow you will be walking where the apostles walked!

Day 2: Arrival Istanbul

We transfer to our hotel in Istanbul, Turkey for the next two evenings.

Day 3: Bustling Istanbul, Archaeological Museum

christian tours in greece

The tour today will be an unusual combination of Greek Orthodox, Roman, Ottoman and modern day Islam including entrance into the famed Blue Mosque and St. Sophia Church. After lunch we visit the fascinating Topkapi Palace housing the many priceless treasures and colorful stories of Ottoman Sultans. This afternoon our guide will walk us through the wonderful exhibits at the Archaeological Museum. Treasures include the sarcophagus of Alexander the Great, mosaic remnants depicting the times of Nebuchadnezzar, tablets of the Treaty of Kadesh known to be between Ramses II and the Hittites during the 13th century BC and many other wonderful items. We return to our hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Sea of Marmara, Ancient Troy

Departing Istanbul, we travel west across "Trace," the European portion of Turkey. The summer homes along the Sea of Marmara will provide the scenery as we travel. Our bus boards a large ferry to cross the Dardanelles Strait giving us views of the bunkers on the hillside and the ocean going vessels. During our journey, we hear the commentary of the British major losses and World War I defeat in the Dardanelles Strait. Disembarking in Canakkale, we travel a short distance south to the area known as Troas, where Paul had a vision during his second missionary journey and was called to Macedonia (Acts 16:8-13). Paul later spent a week in Troas preaching here and Eutychus was resurrected (Acts 20:6-12). We will visit ancient Troy, which was excavated in 1873 by Heinrich Schliemann. Don't forget to have your picture taken from the top of the Trojan Horse. We travel to our nearby lodging for the evening.

Day 5: Pergamum, Thyatira & Izmir

christian tours in greece

Our first visit of the day is Pergamum. The church of Pergamum was praised for its forbearance; (Rev. 2:12-17) it was here that the first Christians were executed by Rome. We'll visit the fabled Acropolis, pass through the Royal Gates, view the foundations of the Altar of Zeus and visit the ruins of the library (which once held 200,000 volumes). Next we travel east to Thyatira viewing the ancient roadway and period columns. Thyatira was once a busy trading center and famous as a "seller of purple," the most favored of the Seven Churches. We continue south to Izmir, which is the third largest city in Turkey and a long time center for Jews and Christians. In Paul's day, Izmir was known as Smyrna and was another of the Seven Churches (Rev. 2:8-11). Our lodging this evening will be in Izmir.

Day 6: Sardis, Philadelphia, Pamukkale

christian tours in greece

Departing our Hotel in Izmir, we'll see Polycarp's Church and visit the ancient roman agora. Then, we travel to Sardis, which was berated by John for its facade of strength when, in reality, it was weak (Rev. 3:1-6). Here coins were minted and the dyeing of wool originated. We'll visit the gymnasium and synagogue. Our next stop is nearby Philadelphia from where we are challenged to “hold fast” and look forward to the coming of the "new Jerusalem" (Rev. 3:7-13) in the Book of Revelation. Not much is left of the city except for the ancient wall and the remains of a Byzantine basilica in the modern city of Alasehir. Our lodging this evening will be in a lovely spa hotel in Pamukkale.

Day 7: Hierapolis, Laodicea & Colossae

Hierapolis, meaning "Sacred City," was an ancient center for pagan cults until it was transformed into a Christian center in the first century. According to tradition, the Apostle Philip lived and was martyred in Hierapolis. It was likely the hot springs of Hierapolis (in contrast to the cold mountain springs near Colossae) that combined to bring application to the "lukewarm" Laodiceans (Rev 3:14-22). This connection between the cities lies behind Paul’s reference to Hierapolis and Laodicea in his epistle to the Colossians (Col 4:13). Laodicea contains many acres of ruins to visit including a stadium and remnants of a sophisticated water system. Nearby Colossae is well-known throughout Christian circles as the receiver of Paul's letter to the Colossians. Today, the town has fallen into obscurity and nothing remains. We spend the remainder of the day traveling through the Turkish countryside arriving in the port city of Kusadasi where we spend two nights. The day will not be complete without a visit to a local Turkish Rug cooperative.

Day 8: Ephesus

christian tours in greece

We travel to the nearby town of Selcuk for a visit of ancient Ephesus. Ephesus was once a thriving port town of 250,000 people. Today you can still see the spectacular excavations of the major streets in this ancient city. We view the Library, Agora, theatre, colorful mosaics in the aristocratic Terrace Houses, and a panoramic outlook of the surrounding ancient port area (including a wealth of church history and cultural insight). Then we continue with a visit to the Basilica Church of St. John, which houses an immersion baptismal and is believed to be resting place of John. From here we have an excellent overview of the Ephesus harbor, the Mosque of Jesus, and see the site of the Temple of Artemis, which is listed as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Day 9: Isle of Patmos

This morning, we embark our cruise ship and sail for a visit to the beautiful Isle of Patmos, which is under statutory protection as a historic monument. Here we have a tour to see the fortified monastery of St. John and the cave claimed to be where John received the Revelation. Back on the ship, enjoy dinner before settling in to your cabin for the night.

Day 10: Crete, Santorini

christian tours in greece

Crete is the largest and the most rugged of the Greek islands. Take a tour to Heraklion and the fantastic ruins of the Palace of Knossos. Discovered in 1899 and partially reconstructed, the elaborate Palace is believed to be the mythical Labyrinth of King Minos and the seat of ancient Minoan culture. This afternoon visit the island of Santorini which is perhaps the most breathtaking of all the Greek Islands. You may choose to take an optional panoramic bus tour viewing some of the most spectacular scenery of the Aegean. Travel through countless villages and settlements with delicate architecture and beauties eventually arriving in Oia. During your time in Oia, visit the many narrow streets, open-air cafes and glittering boutiques. Upon returning to the ship, we view the lace-like caldera, the little islands of Thirasia, Palea, & Nea Kameni. We arrive at the ship for dinner and evening entertainment.

Day 11: Disembark Cruise – Ancient Corinth & Cenchreae

christian tours in greece

We disembark the cruise this morning and travel west with a rest stop and photos at the Corinth Canal. Next, we visit ancient Corinth, the city that inspired many of Paul's most familiar letters and is a highlight for the New Testament scholar. See the Archaeological Museum, the Market Place, the Bema, and the Temples. To enjoy a devotional in the midst of the ruins of the church of Corinth and see the pillars, steps, and public worship place where Paul preached will enhance your understanding and love for the Bible. The ruins of this important cultural center are fascinating as we walk along the stone path that the Apostle Paul walked. The engineering skill and intellect of these people are evident in the water systems that still flow from ancient to modern day. Our guide will be sure to show you the room dedicated to the medical care of that period. We travel on to the top of the nearby Acropolis where our guide will speak on the worship practices and point out the bird’s eye view of what was a bustling city of around 800,000 during Paul’s stay. Another important stop is a visit to Diolkos where we view the paved trackway which enabled boats to be moved overland across the Isthmus of Corinth and served as a life line for Corinth. This shortcut allowed ancient vessels to avoid the long and dangerous circumnavigation of the Peloponnese peninsula. Before returning to Athens, we will visit Cenchreae, the ancient port region of Corinth. Acts 18:18 states the Apostle Paul stopped at Cenchreae during his second missionary journey, where he had his hair cut to fulfill a vow.

Day 12: Athens

christian tours in greece

Following breakfast this morning we tour Athens, the foundation of democracy. We visit the Acropolis, the Parthenon, and Erectheum before viewing Athens atop Mars Hill where Paul stood and preached the truth to the Gentile nation. From atop Mars Hill we view the Agora below, the ancient marketplace and center of Athenian public life. Additional sites viewed during our panoramic bus tour are, the House of Parliament, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Olympic Stadium, and Presidential Palace. An option later this afternoon is a visit to the famous Plaka with a multitude of shops and cafes.

Day 13: Meteora Monastery

Please prepare for a dress code today. In Meteora, women are required to wear skirts below the knee and men, pants. From Athens, our tour travels northward past Thermopylae where we learn of the famous Spartan battle of 300. We continue through the mountains to Meteora. Here we see the world famous Byzantine monasteries that are perched precariously on summits of gray rock pinnacles of varied and beautiful shapes. Their history goes back to the 14th century when the monks sought refuge in the cliffside caves then fled higher to build the original wooden shelters, later transformed into monasteries. Our lodging this evening will be in Meteora.

Day 14: Vergina, Berea, Thessalonica

christian tours in greece

Traveling northward into Macedonia we visit King Phillip's (Alexander's father) tomb in Vergina, one of the most outstanding finds in all of Greece. A stop will be made in Berea to view the ancient synagogue where Paul spoke and the Bema surrounded by mosaics of Paul and the plaque of scripture regarding the "more noble" church. The New Testament books of I & II Thessalonians will come alive to us today as we arrive in the delightful harbor city of Thessalonica. En route to the hotel we will view the old city ramparts; the newly excavated Forum, St. George Church, an ancient Roman monument which was transformed into a church and the Galerius Arch which rises over the famous Via Egnatia. We spend two nights here.

Day 15: Thessalonica/Philippi/Kavala

christian tours in greece

We begin the day by following the massive battlement Byzantine wall to the citadel for a panoramic view of the city. Next, we will visit Philippi and Kavala. Kavala is Greece's prettiest mainland port with a most elegant harbor. Paul landed here with his disciples, Timothy and Silas. Luke, the Evangelist, also came here from Troas. This ancient city of Neapolis was later renamed Christoupolis because it was the first European city to accept Christianity. Imagine walking on the same sod as these men of the Bible! We will see the Roman Aqueduct and the ruins of the Acropolis in this beautifully located city, known since the 5th century as Kavala. Continue on to Philippi where Paul preached his first evangelical sermon and baptized the first Christians on European soil. We will view the baptismal site where Lydia surrendered her life to Christ and visit a crypt dating from the Roman period that is thought to have served as a prison for Paul. See the famous Acropolis, the Market Place, Basilica, and the Theatre. We return to Thessalonica and visit St. Demetrius Basilica, dedicated to a distinguished member of the Roman army and a martyred Christian convert, before returning to the hotel for our final night.

Day 16: Homeward Bound

We transfer to the Thessalonica airport for our flight home.

Christian Pilgrimage Journeys

In The Footsteps Of Paul The Saint With Greek Cruise

A 11 days / 10 nights christian tour in greece, day 1 wednesday: athens.

The trip will start with your arrival in Athens airport where we will meet and transfer you to your hotel. Rest of the day at leisure, dinner and overnight in Athens.

DAY 2 Thursday: Athens City Tour

After breakfast we will go on a city tour where we will visit the main points of interest in the city: Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Royal Palace, Pan-Athenian Stadium, the Temple of Olympian Zeus and visit the world famous Acropolis, with its new Museum as well as Monastiraki (the Old Flea Market) and Mars’ Hill (Areopagus) where Paul preached the truth to the Gentile Nation. The tour will continue on a walk around the historical churches found in Athens. We start from what is known to Athenians as the Russian Church, the Holy Church of Lykodemos Sotira is one of the oldest and largest Byzantine churches in Athens. The next stop will be located on Monastiraki Square, the Church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, or Pantanassa, was once called the Great Monastery, and today is known commonly as Monastiraki. This 10th-century arched basilica was first mentioned in a 17th-century document when the church was managed as part of the Kaisariani Monastery. Kapnikarea Church will be the final stop and it stands out as a major landmark in Athens’ Byzantine past. Dating from the 11th century, the church lies in the middle of Ermou Street and is dedicated to the Presentation of the Virgin Mary. The church was built atop an older, Christian temple, commissioned in the fifth century AC by the Byzantine empress Eudokia, wife of Theodosius the Younger. Constructed on foundations of the ancient temple of Athena or, perhaps, Demeter, Kapnikarea Church is today owned by the University of Athens. The rest of the day is at leisure. Dinner and Overnight in Athens.

DAY 3 Friday: Athens / Piraeus (Embarkation) / Mykonos

Embark on a wonderful 3-night cruise to the Greek Islands and Turkey. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served daily while on board. Mykonos, the whitewashed jewel of the Cyclades Islands, is your first stop. This charming, mountainous island is known for the hundreds of tiny chapels, white-washed buildings and beautiful windmills that dot its landscape. Don’t miss taking a stroll down Mykonos Town, where mazes of narrow streets link the whitewashed buildings and traditional life continues amidst the bustling activity. Enjoy free time to explore this little paradise in the middle of the Aegean Sea.

DAY 4 Saturday: Kusadasi / Ephesus / Patmos

Breakfast and stop at the Turkish port of Kusadasi for an included excursion to the ruins of Ephesus where Paul the Saint spent three years during his ministry and where its inhabitants were the recipients of Paul’s famous epistle. Ancient Ephesus was the Roman capital of Asia Minor and an important center for Christianity from AD 50s. During AD52-54 Saint Paul lived here working with the congregation and organizing his missionary activity and taught the Word of God (Acts 20:31) and this is where he wrote the Epistle to Corinthians I. Additionally this was one of the seven cities found in the Book of Revelation(Acts 2:1-7), indicating a strong church. We will visit the house of Virgin Mary where she lived with John, on the hill behind the city. After this amazing experience we will have lunch and then visit the Basilica of St. John as well as the ruins of the famous Diana’s temple with the Baths of Scholastica, the Library of Celsus, the Odeon, the Arch of Hercules, the Temple of Hadrian, the Agora and the Greco-Roman theater. Continue your cruise to the island of Patmos, a beautiful and spiritual island where In 95 AD, St. John the Theologian - one of the twelve disciples of Jesus - was sent into exile. St. John remained on the island for eighteen months during which time he lived in a cave below the hilltop temple of Diana. In this cave exists a small hole in the rock wall, from which derived a series of oracular messages that Prochoros, a disciple of St. John, transcribed as the Biblical chapter of Revelations. During his time in the sacred cave, now known as the Holy Grotto of the Revelation, St. John also composed the Fourth Gospel. During our time there we will visit the Monastery of St. John the Theologian UNESCO World Heritage Site where we will see the Holy Grotto as well as priceless icons and manuscripts. Afterwards, drive back to the port of Scala and enjoy some free time in this quaint and picturesque harbor.

DAY 5 Sunday: Heraklion (Crete) / Santorini

In the morning the ship will dock at the port of Heraklion on the island of Crete. In Heraklion Paul met the owner and captain of the ship, who warned him about continuing his journey to Rome. You can take a tour (optional) to the Palace of Knossos, the center of the Minoan civilization. After lunch, the ship will travel to the most beautiful island in the Aegean Sea known as the “Black Pearl of the Aegean”, the volcanic Santorini where we will enjoy the breathtaking Panoramic View. Latest excavations have suggested that Santorini might be the lost sight of Atlantis.

DAY 6 Monday: Piraeus (Disembarkation) / Athens / Thessalonica

After early morning disembarkation, we will travel towards the largest city on Northern Greece, Thessalonica which was an early center for Christianity, where Paul visited and preached during the winters of 49-50 A.D. and wrote two epistles to the ancient Thessalonians. On the way we will make a stop at Thermopylae, famous for its heroic defense by King of Sparta Leonidas and his courageous Spartans warriors against the Persian army. In Thessalonica we will visit the Museum of Byzantine Culture, one of the finest museums in the world devoted to Byzantine art and civilization with an impressive collection of many Byzantine and early Christian frescoes, icons and artifacts. We will have dinner and stay overnight in Thessalonica.

DAY 7 Tuesday: Thessalonica / Philippi / Kavala / Thessalonica

After breakfast we depart for our one day Philippi Christian tour. Philippi is the town where Paul delivered his first sermon in Europe, sowing the seeds of Christianity. “And from there (He went) to Philippi, which is the leading city of the district of Macedonia and a Roman Colony. We remained in this city some days...” (Acts 16:12-18). Paul arrived here with Silas and Luke on the winter of AD 49 to AD50. There the first Christian baptism was performed, of a woman named Lydia. Although they were prosecuted and arrested, they received God’s help to escape from prison (Acts 16: 11-23) where there was the conversion of the jailer (Acts 16: 23-26). We will visit the Roman Theatre, probable site of the prison where Paul and Silas were arrested. We will continue towards the city of Kavala and the ancient city of Neapolis (Acts 16:11) where Paul landed with his disciples, Timothy and Silas. It was later renamed Christoupolis, meaning city of God, because it was the first European city to accept Christianity. We will visit the Roman Aqueduct and the ruins of the Acropolis. Dinner and overnight in Thessalonica.

DAY 8 Wednesday: Thessalonica / Vergina / Veria / Kalambaka

Breakfast and city tour of Thessalonica, where Paul preached the gospel in the second and third missionary journey. For the early Christians of this city he wrote epistles “To the Thessalonians.”. We will visit the Cathedral of St. Demetrius, the Protector Saint of the city, the Church of Saint Sofia, the great Church of Saint George which is hosted in a medieval building, the Byzantine temple of «Panagia Chalkeon», the historical Church of Prophet Elias, the White Tower and the Byzantine fortress of the city, the triumphal Arch of Galerius starting at the Via Egnatia, once a strategic artery of the Roman Empire. Then we will head to Vergina, the legendary burial site of the Macedonian kings. This place is considered as a World Heritage Site, also known as the Royal Tombs and houses the tomb of King Philip II, father of Alexander the Great and conqueror of Greek territories which resulted in the expansion of Hellenism. Next stop will be Veria (Berea), another town evangelized by Paul (Acts 17.10-14). When Saint Paul visited this town in AD50, he came across a more “noble” Jewish community where he preached and created an important Church. This is where Paul met Sopatros, who would later become a valuable comrade who followed him on his return journey to Asia. We will visit the ancient synagogue where we will see the Byzantine mosaic in the monument commemorating his preaching. According to tradition it was at this place where he preached. Depart for Kalambaka for dinner and overnight.

DAY 9 Thursday : Kalambaka / Meteora / Delphi

After breakfast the trip continues with a visit the spectacular Meteora, the UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is a mountainous region of stunning scenery. You will see hundred-year-old Byzantine monasteries on top of huge rocks, during the Middle Ages, first built in the 14th century by monks seeking isolation and salvation. We will visit the most famous of them, which is now a popular museum, the Great Meteoron, to admire superb icons, old manuscripts, unique mosaics and frescoes. We will continue to Delphi for dinner and overnight.

DAY 10 Friday: Delphi / Corinth / Cenchrea / Athens

Breakfast and exploration of Delphi. Delphi is the famous oracle where the priestess of Apollo, Pitia, influenced, with their prophecies the history of cities and states of antiquity. Visit the archaeological site and museum. The museum houses an impressive collection associated with ancient Delphi, including the earliest known notation of a melody, the famous Charioteer, golden treasures discovered beneath the Sacred Way, and fragments of reliefs from the Siphnian Treasury. Close to the exit is the inscription that mentions the Roman proconsul Gallio. The reference to proconsul Gallio in the inscription provides an important marker for developing a chronology of the life of Apostle Paul by relating it to the trial of Paul in Achaea mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles (18:12-17). In the same region you will find the famous Monastery of Hosios Lukas. This is a historic walled monastery and one of the most important monuments of Middle Byzantine architecture and art, and has been listed on UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites we. We will continue towards ancient Corinth (Acts 18.1-18). It was in ancient Corinth where Paul came and worked, established a thriving church and writing two of the epistles, which are now part of the New Testament. We will see all the sites that are associated with his ministry: the Agora, the Temple of Apollo, the roman Odeon, the Bema and Gallio’s seat, the pillars, stairs, and the place of public worship, where Paul preached. All these visits will certainly enhance the understanding of Corinthians I and II. Before ending the tour and return to Athens, we will visit the ancient Greek port of Cenchrea (Acts 18:18) where Paul was during his second missionary journey and the ruin of the early Christian 5th Century basilica. Return to Athens, dinner and overnight.

DAY 11 Saturday: Athens Airport

According to the schedule of your return flight you will be taken to the airport of Athens.

Biblical Readings

Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars’ hill [or, the court of the Areopagites], and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious. For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions [or, gods that ye worship], I found an altar with this inscription, To the unknown God. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you. Acts 17:22,23
If after the manner of men I have fought with beasts at Ephesus, what advantageth it me, if the dead rise not ? let us eat and drink; for tomorrow we die. Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners. 1 Corinthians 15:32,33
I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ. Revelation 1:9
And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Beroea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews. These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the Scriptures daily, whether those things were so. Therefore many of them believed ; also of honorable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few. But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached of Paul at Beroea, they came thither also, and stirred up the people. And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul to go as it were to the sea : but Silas and Timothy abode there still. Acts 17:10,11,12,13,14
And after he had seen the vision, immediately we endeavored to go into Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord had called us for to preach the gospel unto them. Therefore loosing from Troas, we came with a straight course to Samothracia, and the next day to Neapolis; and from thence to Philippi, which is the chief city of that part of Macedonia, and a colony : and we were in that city abiding certain days. Acts 16:11,12

Christian Tours In Greece

Follow the steps of apostle paul, greece: a biblical destination.

For most people “the biblical world” is undoubtfully connected with the land of Israel. Indeed all the major events of the Bible took place in the area of Modern Israel, though the biblical world includes also the areas of Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Italy, Greece, Cyprus and Turkey. Nearly two-thirds of the New Testament, including all the letters of Paul, most of Acts and the book of Revelation, are set in either Turkey or Greece.

Following the death of Jesus, his disciples were commissioned to spread his teachings to all nations. Apostle Pall is one of the most important figures of the Apostolic Age, who taught the gospel of the Christ to the first century world. Known also as Saul of Tarsus (in modern Turkey), a scholarly Jew and Roman citizen he had converted to the new Christian faith. After conversion, he started apostolic journey to Asia Minor. He had a vision at Troas calling him to come over to Greece.

He sailed from Troas to Samothrace and then to Neapolis (Kavala) and then traveled to Philippi. He is the one who converted to Christianity the first woman in Europe’s history and he is the one who established the first church on the European soil. Through Amphipolis and Apollonia, he visited Thessaloniki, Berea, Athens & Corinth. From Corinth Apostle Paul sailed to Ephesus.

He came back for the second time in Greece sailing from Assos to Mytilene, then Chios and Samos. Then to Ephesus again and then through Cos & Rhodes back to Middle East. On his way to Rome to be judged as Roman citizen, sailing from Caesarea through Myra to Rome Apostle Paul experienced bad weather. The ship he was sent with to Rome forced by strong winds stopped at Fair Havens (Crete).

During his journeys Apostle of the Nations wrote and sent letters to churches he had established, letters reflecting his theology. He is considered the first theologian of the new religion which combines new concepts, new teachings and new messages influenced by the ancient Greek civilization. The New Testament especially the book of Acts and the letters of Paul are revealing the obvious biblical significance and the interaction between the ancient Greek culture and Christianity.

Greece is the first European country converted to Christianity. The first churches of Europe were set up in Greece. The first woman of Europe converted into Christianity was living on the Greek territory. The places that Apostle Paul visited are still existing as well as his message. The message Apostle of the Nations took to the Greeks almost 2,000 years ago. The places where he taught can be visited actually and today.

For these reasons, Greece can be called an apostolic country. For these reasons Greece is a main biblical destination.

Catholic Cathedral of Athens

St. Dionysius the Areopagite Catholic Cathedral

Nestled in the heart of Athens stands the awe-inspiring St. Dionysius the Areopagite Catholic Cathedral. Serving as the center of worship for the Catholic Archbishop of Athens, this magnificent structure is dedicated to the memory of Saint Dionysius the Areopagite , a devoted pupil of the Apostle Paul and the first bishop of Athens. Designed by the renowned German architect, Leo von Klenze, in 1853, the Cathedral of Saint Dionysius the Areopagite boasts a grand three-aisled basilica in the remarkable style of neo-Renaissance. Adorned throughout with intricate details, the pillars supporting the triumphant arch display life-size depictions of the four evangelists.

The Triumphal Arch boasts a majestic display of Christ Pantocrator, holding the Gospel with a commanding presence. Below, on the left, stands Moses, clutching the sacred text of the Law, while on the right, the Prophet David strums his harp with reverence. Adding to the grandeur, we see the distinguished figures of Saints Gregory the Great and Augustine below.

Get ready to explore the charming neighborhoods of Monastiraki and Plaka on our tour of Athens. These quaint quarters are renowned for their local boutiques and bustling flea market. As we make our way to the historic agora, you’ll also catch a glimpse of the magnificent Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens, also referred to as the “Mētrópolis”. This impressive cathedral serves as the main church of the Archbishopric of Athens and is a beloved landmark for both locals and tourists. Greece .

The Ancient Agora

The bustling Ancient Agora, nestled in the vibrant neighborhood of Plaka, stands as a prime gathering spot for both locals and visitors alike. Here, one of the key

Athens Ancient Agora

rendezvous points for St. Paul himself, according to the historical records available to us. It is said that while in the Agora, the apostle stumbled upon an emblem dedicated to the Unknown God and used this as a springboard to engage the Athenians in the teachings of the Christian God and the fledgling religion. Moments of paramount importance in St. Paul’s mission occurred within these very walls. Among the treasures awaiting discovery in the Agora is the Church of the Holy Apostles. What makes this unique is its coexistence with the temples built to venerate Zeus and Apollo, highlighting Greece’s progressive stance on cultural and religious freedom.

Built the last quarter of the 10th century it was a time when the Byzantine Empire was very strong militarily. In the 1930s the American School of Classical Studies began excavations, the restoration of Stoa of Attalos was completed and the only one that remained intact was the church of the Holy Apostle! The church’s frescoes are magnificent still today and you can still see this unique quality from the old days of the past. The wall paintings and the colors used are very expressive as well as the dome of the temple dominates the church and the sunlight coming from the small windows to the interior of the church shows the architectural level of the people who have constructed such a monument!

Daphni Monastery Of Athens, Greece

The Monastery Of Daphni

The time has finally arrived to pay a visit to the renowned Daphni Monastery , a remarkable symbol of the 11th-century AD Byzantine Empire nestled near Athens. Located on the outskirts of the Haidari Grove and easily accessible via Athens Avenue, this exquisite masterpiece stands proudly at the western entrance of the Athens basin. As the largest Byzantine monastery in Attica, the Monastery of the Dormition of the Virgin , also known as the Daphni Monastery, holds a prestigious position as a UNESCO-protected monument.

Its grand architecture, expansive size, and unparalleled mosaic works, reminiscent of the imperial capital of Constantinople, cement its significance as one of the most valuable landmarks of the Byzantine era. Undoubtedly, the Daphni Monastery is a monumental monument, deserving of our attention and admiration.

Take some time to leisurely explore Plaka and maybe do some shopping. Then, our full-day excursion will move on to Lycabettus, the stunning peak of Athens offering breathtaking views of Piraeus. Afterwards, treat yourself to a delicious traditional lunch before resuming the tour with a visit to Piraeus, the bustling hub of Greece’s main port and among the largest in the entire Mediterranean. It’s worth noting that St. Paul himself arrived here during his visit to Athens.
