As a travel lover myself, I often dread planning and preparing for a trip. Not only do I never have the time, but I often get oversaturated by the vast amount of information found online and the fear of getting scammed.

Over the years, I've found the best websites and apps to help smooth out the planning process. These apps help me keep track of all my reservations, send me booking reminders, and guarantee I always find the best prices -- because there is nothing worse than falling for tourist traps or overpriced offerings. 

Whether you are a spontaneous or a nitty-gritty planner traveler, ZDNET has tested and reviewed the best trip planner apps on the market. When planning my trips, I always make a stop at the Booking.com app, especially when reserving hotels. I find their user interface visually appealing and easy to use, and that it provides just the right amount of information I need when scrolling through hotel suggestions. Personally, I enjoy that I can add my top picks to my favorites with a quick tap of a heart, glance through reviews, look at cancellation policies, and even find out how far away hotels are from key spots. Through Booking.com, you can also book flights, car rentals, taxis, and city attractions, making it a great all-in-one place to plan and book upcoming weekend getaways or longer vacations. While I have personally never used the car rentals, taxis, or city attractions components of the app, I enjoy knowing that if I ever needed to, I can quickly hop on my phone and glance at the latest offerings. 

My favorite feature when using Booking.com to plan trips is the offers and promotions it displays for users. In the app, when you click your profile, you can see your "Genius" loyalty program status as well as discover the best deals around the world for your specific chosen dates. My only critique of Booking.com is that it does not enable group trip planning or let you organize your bookings per trip. This means if you are planning a trip with a friend, only one person can book and have access to reservations.

In terms of planning a trip, creating an itinerary, and keeping all your information in one place, TripIt is one of the best travel apps to keep yourself organized. When you first create an account, TripIt will sync with your inbox and automatically add all of your upcoming flights and reservations to your account. You can then modify each trip to include as little or as much information as you'd like. As someone who likes to be spontaneous when traveling, I usually only add the essentials: flight information, hotel reservations, and important documents. However, if you like to plan your trips down by the hour, you can also include activities, restaurant reservations, transportation, and more in your trip plan to share with fellow travelers.

As your trip approaches, TripIt will also send you packing reminders, give you COVID-19 travel guidance, and show transportation options. While you can get most of the essential features within the free version of the app (this is the one I use), you can also pay $49 a year to get advanced features such as check-in reminders, real-time flight alerts, point tracking, and even notifications for drops in airfare prices. 

Keep in mind that while TripIt gives you transportation options and finds places near your hotel, you cannot book or make any reservations directly from the app. The app is solely used to organize and keep track of all of your travel plans in one place, no matter where you book them.

Guide is an innovative AI travel planning tool that creates personalized travel itineraries based on your preferences. (Full disclosure, it's also owned by ZDNET's sister company. It's currently in private beta, but you can join a wait list.) All you need to do is select your destination, the dates, whether you are traveling alone or in a group, your budget, and the types of activities you are looking for, and Guide will do the planning. 

After generating a trip itinerary for you based on your prompt, Guide then lets you modify and customize the itinerary to your liking. I recently used Guide to plan a six-day trip to Austin, Texas, and this was the feature I enjoyed the most, since I had specific restaurants and activities I wanted to incorporate into my trip, but I also needed some additional recommendations. While you can't book flights or restaurant reservations through Guide, you can book and find great hotel deals powered by Expedia on the platform. 

Guide will also give you an overall budget for your trip, a packing list, and a comprehensive list of things to know about your destination -- which may be helpful for some more than others. While my trip to Austin was a solo trip, Guide has a feature where you can invite other fellow travelers to collaborate in planning your trip through Guide's chatbot, GuideBot. This chatbot also works sort of like ChatGPT, where you can ask GuideBot questions about your trip, your destination, or recommendations. Keep in mind you can not ask GuideBot to directly modify your trip for you, and instead need to manually do it yourself -- believe me, I tried.

Since the platform has so many reviews for restaurants, activities, accommodations, and locations all over the world, it is always easy and convenient to log onto the app or website to help you make an educated decision. (However, remember that not all Tripadvisor reviews are legit, since the platform does not independently verify customer postings.) Beyond reviews, TripAdvisor also lets you book hotels, restaurants, things to do, and more while also providing detailed insights into their offerings -- including cancellation policies, ratings, and features.

I first discovered Omio when a friend recommended it to me while I was studying abroad in Spain, and ever since I downloaded it, it has become my go-to app for booking the best deals and fares on transportation within Europe. The concept behind Omio is simple: You plug in your departure and arrival location, including the number of people you are traveling with, and add whether you are looking for a one-way or round-trip journey. Omio will then show you the best deals by train, bus, or plane to and from your desired destination, including how much time each option will take you and the number of stops. 

The German-based travel booking site is great at aggregating travel information from multiple sites, allowing you to view all of your transportation options in one place. This is incredibly beneficial when planning trips within Europe since there are several ways you can cross each border and often various languages and regulations to keep in mind. Omio is set in English but has multiple additional languages available, as well as currency options. During my time abroad, I solely used Omio to book all of my transportation, including planning a 17-day trip across seven different European countries. Overall, using Omio was not only convenient and seamless but also helped me save hundreds of dollars by helping me maximize my travel time by switching between flights, trains, and buses. 

However, since returning from Europe, I have not used Omio as much as I thought I would -- maybe because I have a car and take most of my trips by plane. And Omio's flight deals and suggestions are not the strongest compared to Booking.com or Skyscanner's, which heavily focus on flight deals. I have also found they have some limitations depending on the country or city you are traveling in. Be mindful of the deals and tickets you buy through Omio since some tickets are non-refundable, and some customers complain their customer service is not the best -- although I have yet to have any issues with them.

Going on holiday to far-off destinations was exciting and challenging until a certain global pandemic made things considerably harder. As the world starts to open itself back up, so is the prospect of travel.

Though you may be limited to within a country's borders or are barred from accessing some territories and potentially face quarantine in others, there's always the chance of going away. And, just like a few years ago, your iPhone will be your best friend for the trip, wherever you decide to go.

These are what AppleInsider believes are some of the best apps you can have on your iPhone when traveling alongside Apple Maps.

Google Maps

Navigation apps are extremely useful in travel, not only in getting to your destination but also in traversing a town or city you're unfamiliar with. They're critical and go first on this list ahead of anything else.

It may seem odd to recommend Google Maps over Apple Maps, but there are a few things to bear in mind here. For a start, Google Maps is extremely popular, has been around for quite a bit longer, and has over 220 countries and territories mapped, complete with hundreds of millions of businesses and other locations for you to find.

For international travel, where data plans become expensive or severely limited, the Google Maps offline option is its biggest asset. You can define an area and preload maps before you travel, which can then be used without needing a data connection, potentially saving you money.

Google Maps is free to download and use and requires iOS or iPadOS 12.2 or later.

If you know where you want to go but don't fancy scouring airlines for flights or trying to track down a great hotel deal, Expedia is an excellent way to sort all that out for you.

Expedia helps you find the perfect flight within your budget, as well as the ability to find and book the right hotel, and if you need it, a rental car. Packages and bundles offer discounts for buying flights and other elements simultaneously versus getting them individually.

The app does more, including offering recommendations to local attractions and getting deals on tours, shows, and theme park entry.

It's also handy in that everything to do with your trip is held within one app, making it a one-stop-shop for all of your travel needs. You'll even get alerts for flight delays and gate changes, as well as any other unexpected alterations to your trip itinerary.

Expedia is free to download and requires iOS or iPadOS 14.0 or later.

LoungeBuddy

Frequent airline passengers may not be that enthralled by busy airports. Airport lounges can offer an escape from the crowds and a relaxing time before you take off, but typically they're only offered as a free service for certain types of plane tickets or if you have a credit card or something similar that provides similar access.

While you may be OK with the idea of paying for a pass to the lounges, there's no guarantee that the lounge you want to enter will allow you in the first place, such as if you're flying on a different airline. It can also be hard to determine what lounges are in a specific airport in the first place.

LoungeBuddy serves as both a guide and a way to quickly buy access to airport lounges so that you can travel in style. The app will tell you what lounges you may have access to based on your trip, class of service, memberships, or credit cards you have, as well as whether it's free or paid.

It also allows users to buy access to hundreds of other lounges in airports worldwide, regardless of the user's status or ticket.

If you need a place to stay somewhere, hotels are the obvious choice. However, if you want something a bit more personal and native to the area you're in, you could try Airbnb.

Offering access to many locations, ranging from secluded beach houses to apartments in the heart of a city, the app can get you as close or as far from civilization as you want. You can also stay in unique locations, such as domes and treehouses, that you won't find in more corporate-focused travel sites.

You can get in contact with hosts through the app, as well as local experts who could help make your trip the best it could be by using their knowledge of the area. The app also recommends various experiences you can try out for fun while you're at your destination.

If you're lucky enough to have a property that you could let out and earn a bit of cash, you can do so on Airbnb, which provides support and liability insurance for those choosing to become a host.

Google Translate

In a similar vein to the Google Maps recommendation, we're recommending Google Translate over Apple's Translate app. In short, it's because Google's heavily-developed service is far more helpful.

Offering translations between 108 languages by typing, it also includes other ways to translate, including verbal conversations, handwriting, and photos. There's even a live instant translation feature, managed by using your iPhone's camera and superimposing translations of words on top of the live video feed.

This is extremely useful for immediacy, such as reading a menu or looking at signs, as it'll help you understand what's happening extremely quickly.

Again, the best part is that there's an offline mode for translations without Internet for 59 languages. So long as you preload the languages at home before you go, you're saving on data costs.

Google Translate is free to download and requires iOS and iPadOS 12.4 or later.

Tripsy Review: The Ultimate Trip Planner for iPhone and iPad

Summer may be over, but there’s never really an offseason for planning future vacations or business trips. We all have our own methods of trip planning – where we store important documents, how to set an agenda and share that agenda with family or friends – but I’d guess most of us aren’t entirely satisfied with our current planning systems. Important information can be scattered across different apps, services, or analog files, which is fine but not ideal. Tripsy aims to solve that problem.

Tripsy isn’t entirely new to the App Store, having first launched almost a year ago, but it recently received a major 2.0 update alongside iOS 13’s debut. While I never used the previous version, the new Tripsy is exactly the tool I’ve wanted for trip planning for a long time. The app serves as a one-stop shop for organizing all of your trip-related information: you can add Apple Maps points of interest to your agenda, scheduling them to specific times and days, add notes to each saved location, store important travel documents in the app, and share your full trip data with fellow travelers. All of this functionality is enhanced by a strong app experience thanks to system features like multiwindow on iPad, Sign In with Apple, dark mode, and more.

Planning a Trip

Tripsy offers a selection of destination suggestions you can choose from to kickstart your planning, all of which include lists of popular things to do in those cities, but if you’re going anywhere else in the world outside the 11 included suggestions, you’ll want to get started by hitting the orange ‘+’ button to create your new trip. Tripsy will ask for the trip name and dates, and two helpful additional options: time zone and background image.

Selecting a time zone eliminates a point of potential confusion when arranging your itinerary. On the last trip I took, I had added events for my agenda to Apple’s Calendar app, but dealing with changing time zones was a point of frustration for me, so I’m looking forward to using Tripsy in the future. The ability to add a background image is a small touch, but one I appreciate: when planning a trip, it’s nice being able to see an image of your destination in the background. Tripsy integrates with Unsplash so you can choose from an extensive selection of beautiful stock photos to adorn your trip’s background.

After a new trip is created, you can get to work filling out its agenda. Tapping ‘Add new’ at the bottom of the screen loads a grid of different activity options, including Flight, Lodging, Restaurant, Museum, and more. Each activity type is accompanied by a colorful icon reminiscent of what you’d find in Apple Maps, which is fitting because Tripsy includes tight integration with Maps. Once you’ve chosen an activity type, you’ll enter a search screen where you can search for any point of interest from Apple Maps (or enter a location manually).

Creating an itinerary for your trip.

When you’ve found the right location, Tripsy will import its phone number and web address automatically, so they’ll be easily accessible throughout your trip. You’ll be asked to choose a start time (and optionally end time), which includes a lot of flexibility: after picking a day, you can either leave it at that or go more granular with a couple different options, either selecting a simple Morning, Afternoon, or Night designation, or choosing a specific hour for that activity to take place. I really appreciate the variety of options, as it enables being as loose or precise with your plans as you’d like. Finally, when adding a location to your itinerary there’s a Notes field you can fill out as well for jotting down any information you want to remember, or communicate with co-travelers.

Preparing for Your Trip

Documents can be saved in Tripsy.

Once you have an agenda set, there are two features to take advantage of in the time leading up to your travels: sharing and document storage.

Tripsy can share your full trip agenda with any family members or friends who will be accompanying you on your travels. The person icon in the top-right corner of the main trip overview sends a link that enables fellow travelers to not only see your plans, but fully collaborate on them too. Guests you invite can add or modify events, add notes, and do anything else you can do inside the app.

Document storage is a useful way to keep any and all travel-related data in one place. Inside a trip’s Documents screen you’ll find options to import a document from the Files app, or an image from Photos, in addition to taking a photo or creating a new note. This becomes all the more useful when collaborating on a trip with several co-travelers, who can all dump relevant files in one place.

Taking Your Trip

When the time for travel finally arrives, I love the itinerary view that Tripsy provides for fully-outlined trips. The combination of colorful icons, subtle time of day glyphs, and clean, crisp text fits beautifully together. When you’re exploring the city, referencing your itinerary in Tripsy is extremely convenient and offers quick access to any information you’d want. Tapping on a saved event shows you key information like date, duration, phone number, and website, along with a note if you set one, and a map view which you can tap to navigate to the location with Apple Maps, Google Maps, Citymapper, Uber, or Lyft. You can even long-press on an event to see a context menu and preview of all this information.

System Features

Tripsy’s basic functionality makes it well worth trying out, but the app is particularly special due to its strong adoption of system features on iPhone and iPad.

On the iPad, Tripsy not only supports Split View and Slide Over multitasking, it also offers full multiwindow capabilities on iPadOS. If you’d like to keep your trip overview in a full-screen window while a Slide Over window hovers on top with a specific location page, or your itinerary view, that’s entirely possible using multiple windows. Or if you want to pair Tripsy with Apple Maps in a Split View or Slide Over pair, you can use drag and drop to save locations from Maps directly into your trip’s itinerary. Simply pick up a Maps point of interest and drop it into Tripsy; I’ve found this particularly effective when exploring new locations I may want to visit.

Dark mode in iOS 13 is fully supported by Tripsy, so the app will change themes based on your device’s current system appearance setting. Both light and dark modes look sharp.

Sign In with Apple

When turning on sync in Tripsy, the app will prompt you to create an account. You can do this the traditional way, with an email and password, or you can use Sign In with Apple to set up your account with just a couple taps. Tripsy’s implementation of Sign In with Apple is the first I’ve seen offer the ability to have your real email hidden and cause all communication to forward through an Apple-generated random address. I ran into a bug when trying to use that option, which likely is an Apple issue, but it was nice to see it included nonetheless.

Apple Watch

Tripsy offers a solid Apple Watch app that grants convenient access to your trip itinerary, so you can easily scroll through the day’s agenda and tap on events to get more information about them. There’s even the ability to tap on map thumbnails in Tripsy’s watchOS app to load those destinations in the Watch’s Maps app.

The app’s design implements modal cards extremely well, similar to what you’ll find in Apple’s own Maps and Shortcuts apps. It helps Tripsy feel especially native, and is ideal for one-handed iPhone use.

Siri Shortcuts and Suggestions

Finally, Tripsy also offers a few options for Siri shortcuts you can set up, including most notably the ability to get information about your next scheduled activity, and to view all upcoming plans for your trip. There’s one other Siri feature too: when you add hotel or flight information to your trip, Siri intelligence will detect that and offer to add the details to the Calendar app, similar to the intelligent suggestions Siri offers for content located in Mail.

Tripsy does what I’ve long wished for: offers a compelling trip planning experience in a modern app that takes advantage of iOS’ core technology strengths. Even if you set aside the app’s core functionality as a hub for trips, it deserves applause simply for its rich integration of so many modern OS technologies. I don’t travel more than two or three times per year, so I’d probably be fine sticking with my former system of using Apple Notes to organize trip details, but Tripsy’s OS strengths make it an app I’m eager to invest in because I know it won’t require sacrificing the array of system benefits Notes offers – Tripsy has just as many system integrations, if not more.

The next time I travel, I know which app I’m going to use.

Sygic features a detailed and in-depth trip planner that lets you view maps offline and plot where exactly you intend to travel. You can build your itinerary step by step, where the app provides estimated travel times and walking distances for each of your stops. It also offers specifics like opening hours, fees, links, and photos for over 50 million locations, including landmarks, galleries, restaurants, parks, hotels, beaches, and nature spots. Major cities even feature their own dedicated guides, helping you to plan your trip to see the most interesting places. You can also share plans with friends, book hotels and accommodations, and view 360-degree videos that can help you decide where to go on your next vacation.

Google Maps is arguably the best navigation app you can download right now, but it’s also a valuable resource if you’re planning a trip. Not only does it offer directions for travel by various means, but you can also find recommendations for restaurants and cafés regardless of where you are. Anyone can upload photos and reviews of the places they have visited, so you’re sure to encounter more helpful info on Google Maps than with any other trip-planner. You can’t construct an itinerary using the app, but you can use it to find flights and trains to desired destinations. You can also use it to plan road trips, with the Directions feature letting you add stops along the way.

Vacationer Planner Apps: How to Plan the Perfect Trip on Your iPhone

I travel a lot, for both work and pleasure. I attend industry trade shows and take trips with my family everywhere from Europe to the Middle East to Asia. I’m writing this from my hotel in Disney World, where I’m visiting my daughter who works at the park. With my role as my family’s unofficial travel agent, I do a lot of research and have found that I can plan an entire vacation on iOS.

Booking the Tickets

Booking tickets can be a hassle, especially if you aren’t confident that you’re getting the best service or deals. If you have a preferred airline you like to stick with, their app frequently will offer extra goodies, as well as a smooth way to manage your booking. My family tends to make a lot of changes when we travel, so Southwest is our preferred airline, with no change fees and two free checked bags. I prefer the mobile site to the app. One “gotcha” to be aware of when logging in to the app is that it defaults to your identity as the traveler, so you’ll have to be diligent about changing the name, birthday, and gender for each traveler.

Another airline website I’ve been using recently is Frontier . They have rates that can be so low, you might pay more for parking at the airport! Seriously, I booked my last flight for $52 and most of that was taxes.

I will often use an aggregator service like Kayak or Priceline . Priceline has proven valuable several times because they let you cancel within 24 hours, regardless of the carrier’s policy. I have found they let you cancel until midnight the next day, so that could really be 28 hours or longer, depending on what time of day you made your reservation.

Once You're on Your Way

Once the tickets are booked, you can now look forward to the trip itself. That’s more fun to plan, anyway! On travel days, I’m paranoid about my phone running out of battery life. Bring a power bank so you don’t end up without your mobile boarding pass.

Your next step is to make sure you have all of your movies downloaded on your mobile device. On this most recent trip, I forgot to do that and they had expired on my Netflix download queue. I ended up using the Southwest app to watch a movie from their in-flight selection of movies, and it was one that wasn’t yet available on any streaming service, so that actually worked out. But make sure you have the app from the airline installed before you board!

Make sure you have a compatible set of headphones, ideally with noise cancellation. Now that Apple has abandoned the headphone jack, you either need the right adaptor or a wireless headset. Make sure it’s charged too. I bring a portable battery pack and these days I need to be sure I have one that can charge my Lightning devices and my USB-C devices. One day we’ll have a consistent cable format, but we’re not there yet. We don’t even have a universal wireless charging format, so I have to bring a different charger for my Apple Watch, too.

When you do finally get to your destination, you may need the use of other apps for transportation and navigation. Because I travel so much, I was a Hertz Gold Club member for decades, but I can’t remember the last time I rented a car. Now that we have Uber and Lyft, I don’t think I’d go back. Obviously, you’ll want to download one or both of those apps, but consider CityMapper . In the cities it supports, it can give you all of the options available on one app, with expected timing. This way you can see which ridesharing service is more affordable as well as see bikes, scooters, and public transportation, which helped me navigate the subway in New York City and “The Tube” in London. Unfortunately, at press time, the service doesn’t support Orlando.

If you’re heading to a destination like Disney World , as I often do, you will definitely want, and dare I say, need, their official app. You can use it for everything from opening your hotel door to ordering food for pickup (which has been the only way to dine, during COVID times) to seeing theme park wait times and making ride reservations. You can even pay for goods and services with the app, which is important as Disney has halted free MagicBands, their wrist-based Near Field Communications-based identifier. You can always buy MagicBands to pay for merchandise and open your hotel door but the app is becoming your “Key to the Kingdom!”

The dependence upon apps and therefore your phone is another reminder to keep your phone well-charged. FuelRod is a handy offering found in numerous destinations and airports. These kiosks let you purchase a fully charged compact battery pack, with cables for most smartphones, but more importantly, you can swap your depleted FuelRod with a fully charged one. My daughter depends on her FuelRod to keep her phone charged after working a long day at Disney and then enjoying the parks at night.

I remember graduating college in 1988 and driving across the country to visit a friend. I had nothing but a Thomas Guide to navigate with. Now, a friendly voice can tell us where and when to turn, and if we need an umbrella. I wouldn’t go back to the old ways, and I’m amazed I made it across the country, twice, without even a flip phone, let alone an iPhone with all of these amazing travel apps. Then I think of Lewis and Clark and Sacagawea and I’m even more humbled. It’s a new world and thanks to the iPhone and travel apps, we can see and enjoy more of it.

In the ongoing Google Maps vs. Apple Maps debate, Apple's version comes up short for some people, though I think Apple has made great strides in recent years to improve its navigation app. But even if you're not a fan of Apple Maps in general, I think it can prove invaluable on a trip, with some features that make the mobile app an excellent travel companion.

I was reminded of that last week on a family trip out to Hawaii. No sooner had the plane touched down in Honolulu where I was set to catch a connecting flight did a notification appear on my iPhone 12. "Welcome to Daniel K. Inouye International Airport," the notification began, before inviting me to download an offline version of a map featuring the airport's layout.

That's a remarkably handy feature when you've got to change flights. First, a map of the airport can show you where to find the gate you need to be at to board your connection. If you've got enough time to grab a meal, you can also see what restaurants and grab-and-go locations are along the way or just beyond your gate. And by downloading the map for offline use, you don't have to fuss with any temperamental airport Wi-Fi network or eat into your data allotment if you're not on an unlimited data plan.

Apple added the offline maps feature to its Maps app with last year's iOS 17 update. (If you've not already tried out the feature, here's our guide on how to download offline Apple Maps with your iPhone.) Airport maps have been a part of the app since 2017, when Apple added them along with other indoor maps as part of the iOS 11 update.

These days, you'll find maps for more than 100 airports within the Maps app. Apple has a complete list of supported airports .

Whether offline or not, those airport maps in Apple's app pack in a lot of information. Beyond the aforementioned gate and restaurant details, you can also look up baggage claim areas, check-in kiosks for different airlines, gift shops and — perhaps most essentially — restrooms.

That would be plenty to make Apple Maps a go-to app on trips, but there are a few other tools in the app to assist travelers. These are three of my favorites.

Multi-stop routes in Maps

Another recent addition to iOS Maps — Apple introduced it two years ago with iOS 16 — the ability to plot out a route with multiple stops along the way comes in very handy on road trips. Let's say you need to find your way from your hotel to the rental car drop-off, but you want to stop for gas along the way — just add in a stop at a gas station, and Maps will build a route that gets you from Point A to Point B to Point C. You can even drag around different stops to reorder your trip.

Here's our step-by-step guide on how to map out a route with multiple stops . (The feature works the same on iOS 17 as it did when Apple introduced it.)

Glance at the weather

You don't have to leave the Maps app to find out what the weather is going to be like wherever it is you're heading. Search for your destination — it could be a city, a point of interest, or a specific address — and the Maps screen will include a small icon in the lower right-hand corner that lists the temperature and air quality index; theres also a little icon to indicate if it's sunny, cloudy, raining or what have you.

It's not a perfect feature. I wish you could tap the weather icon and jump to the Weather app if you needed an extended forecast for your trip. (If you press and hold on the temperature, you do get a pop-up window with a five-hour forecast, though it's not the most intuitive action.) But in terms of convenient, at-a-glance information, it's a nice addition.

Built-in guides

Most of the features in Maps help you out when you're trying to find your way around a place. But there's one feature that's particularly welcome during the planning stages of a journey.

Maybe you've forgotten that the iOS version of Apple Maps has included dedicated city guides since iOS 14. It's an easy-to-overlook feature if all you're searching for is directions. But search for a particular destination and scroll down — you may find several guides about things to do and places to eat in that particular place.

Yes, the collection of guides tends to favor more frequently visited cities so you may find the feature to be of limited value if your travels take you off the beaten path. But if you're really struggling to come up with ideas for your next trip, you may find some value in perusing Maps' selection of guidebooks.

Apple Maps overview

Maps isn't a perfect app — even a fan of the app like me can rattle off a list of fixes and improvements they want to see . But the app does get better with each iteration — something that's likely to continue with iOS 18 if rumors about custom routes and topographical maps coming to the app prove to be accurate. But even as it stands now, Maps is a great travel tool, and if you haven't launched it in a while, maybe take it out for a spin on whatever trip you have planned for the summer.

MyWindsock is a website that lets you upload the GPX file of your route and gives you real-time data regarding wind conditions along your route.

Unfortunately, an app is still not available, but the website works well. Apart from uploading a GPX file, you can also enter a Strava segment URL and see if it’s the right time to go out for a KOM/QOM or not. The site will also show you the weather conditions next to each Strava leaderboard time.

The website is free to use, but you can pay to get access to advanced features. With the free version, you can see wind conditions, update one file a day, and see the top 10 Strava leaderboard conditions.

The app’s biggest selling point (even though it’s free) is that it works really well with other apps and sensors. Therefore, if you have Bluetooth sensors such as speed sensors, progressive power meters, heart rate monitors, and such, Wahoo Fitness will easily connect to them.

If you have an ANT+ device, you can get a Wahoo Key Plugin and pair it with those as well.

Moreover, Wahoo Fitness is also compatible with Strava, TrainingPeaks, and MyFitnessPal, so you can share your rides there as well.

A nice feature we especially like is called “Skyline VR” which shows you the names of the peaks around you by using your GPS position and phone camera.

Live tracking is available as well, but you need to have service at all times for it to work properly, which is often a problem when you go off the beaten path.

Maps.me is one of our favorite apps on the list, even though it is not strictly cycling-specific. Instead of relying on 3G/4G signal, Maps.me lets you download map data for entire regions and countries on your phone and then use them while you’re offline.

What we especially like is that there’s an option to select cycling as your preferred mode of transportation and the app will create a route for you that prioritizes bike paths and low-intensity roads.

Maps.me is ideal for multi-day trips in countries where you can’t use mobile data because of roaming or in areas with poor connections where you will not have service.

The maps are VERY detailed and include even the smallest roads and paths that are often not shown even on Google Maps.

You can use this app even if you’re traveling by car, hiking, or exploring an area or a city on foot. With 3G/4G data on, you also get information about nearby restaurants, landmarks, cafes, hotels, hostels, supermarkets, and so on.

To find new routes, just hover over an area of interest and click “Discover.” The app will then show you all mapped trails, along with the skill level you need to ride them.

Apart from routes, Trailforks offers additional features such as live tracking, condition reports, and points of interest. You can also view photos and videos that other riders have made along the trail.

Trailforks can also be used offline by downloading maps to your smartphone.

Map My Ride is one of the oldest activity trackers and it is still very popular. It is currently owned by Under Armour and offers a host of handy features.

In a sense, Map My Ride is very similar to Strava . You can use it to track your activity and record data such as route, speed, distance, elevation, and so on. You can then upload it to the Map My Ride site to analyze the data and share it with other riders.

Another similarity with Strava is that Map My Ride has “Courses,” which are basically timed sections like Strava’s “Segments” where you can try to set the fastest time.

The app can be used for free, but if you get the Premium version, you’ll get rid of ads and get access to training plans, live tracking, and advanced routing.

Just scan packaged food to add it to your diet or search for fruits and vegetables in the database.

All of the food entries contain detailed macro- and micronutrient info , so you’ll know if you’re getting enough protein, vitamins, minerals, and other essentials.

If you’re eating at a restaurant or you’re making a complicated recipe, you can still track your nutrition. MyFitnessPal can analyze a recipe directly off of a website and give the low-down of the nutrients in it. Moreover, you can search for restaurants you’re eating at and meals on their menus and MyFitnessPal will analyze the meals based on the ingredients the restaurant has shared.

You can also track progress through charts and graphs, add progress photos, create nutrition reports, and share all of that with your friends and family if you wish.

You can also send your friends and family eCrumbs that will let them see your location while you’re out on a ride, hike, walk, run, or any other adventure.

Road ID also lets you create a personalized lock screen that can include up to three emergency contacts, as well as information about allergies, blood type, medical conditions, and so on.

It’s an app that you will hopefully never have to use, but it’s better to have it than not, just in case.

You can also skip the entire automatic album maker and make a trip manually. You get more control over each waypoint and how it represents your trip. You'll want to use this mode if you want a robust travel diary, adding your thoughts to create a memorable journal.

Share albums with other Travel Facets users or privately so that only those with the link can see your trip.

3. TravelMap (Web): Simplest Way to Create a Map of Your Travel Blog

Sometimes, you don't want the complexities of an app, social news feeds, auto-tagging, and all that jazz. Instead, all you want is to create a map where you add places of interest to plot your trail, along with photos and journal entries. TravelMap is that simple, free solution.

The simplicity of this web app is its best part. Sign up, create your mini-site with a unique address, and start creating your map. The map is your homepage, where you add places by searching or clicking placemarkers. You can always reorder these too.

Then, add images to your map or write posts and link them to the placemarkers you've already mapped. The result for a viewer is a neatly ordered map showing your journey, with a sidebar that displays images or posts to reveal more about your adventures.

The free version of TravelMap should be enough for most people, as its restrictions are still pretty high (like a maximum of 100 images). However, the premium version removes all such limitations if you need it. You can also check out a cool demo of TravelMap to see its full possibilities.

4. Jauntlet (Web, Android, iOS): Journal That Looks Like a Travel Blog Timeline

The Jauntlet web and mobile app look a bit dated compared to others in this list, but the final output looks so good that it deserves a recommendation. It's a mix of a travel journal and a travel blog, presenting your trip in a neat timeline.

When you sign up, Jauntlet asks you to also connect your Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram accounts. This lets the app import photos from your different profiles. When you make any new post of a city you've been to, add the location to plot it on a map, write a journal entry of what you saw and felt, and select photos to add to the entry.

The final result looks fantastic, as seen in the image above. It's a timeline of where you've been, showing a map on the left, the city and date at the top, and your thoughts and photos on the right. Viewers can also comment under the entry. The whole thing can be played as an automatic slideshow, taking readers through your entire journey.

5. Travel Diaries (Web, Android,iOS): Create an Actual Diary and Optionally Print It

Travel Diaries is a free app to design what a travel journal of your trip will look like and optionally print it too. The app is a virtual open book where you can write beautifully formatted entries.

For each page, you can apply one out of 38 custom layouts, choosing how text and images will appear on the page. Based on the layout, select and upload images from your camera roll, and write text in the simple text editor.

Travel Diaries isn't the best app for on-the-fly travel journaling while you're on the trip. It's more a place to reflect on your journey and compose a good-looking travel diary that you would be proud to show to friends. If you like what you've created, you can pay to download a PDF of the journal or ask the app makers to print and ship the travel journal to you directly.

6. Traveldays (Web): Travelogue of Photos With Location, Time, and Captions

Traveldays is one of the best online photo album creators to show off your trips and vacations. It's shockingly easy to use, as it takes your photos and automatically turns them into a picture journey of your travels, almost like showing postcards or polaroids to friends.

Upload your pictures in the order you want, and Traveldays will seek their geotagging information to pin it to a Google Map. You can also write small captions on each image. Share the link with your friends, and you're done.

Try a Physical Travel Diary

So which travel journal app should you go for? There's no one-size-fits-all app here. As a rule of thumb, Find Penguins, Travel Facets, and Jauntlet can better log your thoughts while on the trip. TravelMap, Travel Diaries, and Traveldays are better to create a travel diary after you're back from the trip.
