What is trip cancellation and trip interruption insurance?

Trip cancellation and interruption insurance may reimburse nonrefundable, prepaid trip expenses when you cancel or alter your trip due to a covered situation. In some cases, you may even be covered for select additional costs. But maximum coverage amounts, the types of covered situations and eligible expenses vary from card to card.

Generally, trip cancellation insurance provides reimbursement when you must cancel a trip before its departure date. Meanwhile, trip interruption insurance may refund you if an ongoing trip is interrupted or canceled.

Although you can buy separate travel insurance that will provide a partial refund if you cancel your trip for any reason , trip cancellation and interruption insurance doesn't typically work the same way. Instead, trip cancellation and interruption insurance typically has specific covered losses and exclusions that define the situations in which you can claim reimbursement (and these vary from card to card).

Many different types of cards — including some credit cards with no annual fee — offer trip cancellation and interruption insurance when you purchase travel with your card. The remainder of this guide details some of our favorite cards that offer trip cancellation and interruption benefits. Of course, benefits frequently change. So it's best to look at your card's guide to benefits before booking to understand your card's protections.

What is the difference between trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage?

The main difference between trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage is timing. Trip cancellation insurance protects your trip from when you make the initial payment to the time of your scheduled departure. In contrast, trip interruption insurance covers your trip from the day of your scheduled departure to your scheduled return date.

Does credit card insurance cover natural disasters?

Generally, trip cancellation and trip interruption insurance will cover nonrefundable expenses if you need to cancel your trip (or the remainder of your trip) due to a natural disaster. However, credit card insurance policies vary, so check your benefits guide for specific exclusions.

Note that you must book your trip before the natural disaster starts to be covered. If a storm or hurricane is named and you book your trip afterward, you likely won't be covered.

Premium Chase credit cards

Chase credit cards offer some of the best credit card travel protections. The Chase cards in the table below provide trip cancellation and interruption insurance with relatively high maximum coverage amounts.

To help you understand this benefit, let's consider the specific protection provided by the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card as described in its guide to benefits . The other Chase cards listed in the above table provide similar benefits, but check your card's guide to benefits to ensure your coverage is the same.

When you use an eligible Chase card (like the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card ) to pay for select travel expenses, you and your immediate family may be eligible for trip cancellation and interruption protection. You must charge all or a portion of the cost to your Chase credit card (including bookings made with points through the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal associated with your account).

Eligible trip cancellation or interruption events

You'll only be eligible for reimbursement if certain events cause the cancellation or interruption of your travel arrangements. For example, Chase may provide trip cancellation and interruption coverage for the following circumstances:

  • You or your traveling companion experience accidental bodily injury, death or sickness that prevents travel
  • An immediate family member of you or your traveling companion dies or experiences accidental bodily injury or sickness that is life-threatening, requires hospitalization or requires care by you or your traveling companion
  • Severe weather that would prevent a reasonable and prudent person from beginning or continuing on a trip (the weather must meet specific requirements regarding timing, location and effect on your trip)
  • Named storm warning
  • Change in military orders for you or your spouse
  • A call to jury duty or a court subpoena that you can't postpone or waive
  • Your or your traveling companion's permanent residence is uninhabitable, burglarized or damaged by fire or flood
  • Your or your traveling companion's lodging at your destination becomes uninhabitable
  • Your or your traveling companion's host at your trip's destination dies or is hospitalized
  • A physician or a competent governmental authority having jurisdiction requires you or your traveling companion to quarantine due to health reasons
  • You or your traveling companion miss at least 20% of your trip or the departure of a prepaid cruise or tour due to an organized strike affecting public transportation

Excluded reasons for trip cancellation or interruption

However, you won't be eligible for reimbursement if any of the following directly or indirectly cause (or result from) the trip cancellation or interruption:

  • A change in plans, financial circumstances and any business or contractual obligations
  • A preexisting condition or any other event that occurs or commences before the trip's initial deposit date or booking date
  • Any loss due to voluntarily surrendering unused vouchers, tickets, credits, coupons or travel privileges from the travel supplier before their expiration date
  • Travel after the 26th week of pregnancy, travel when any multiple pregnancy occurs before the initial deposit date or booking date of the trip, or travel during any pregnancy associated with an assisted reproductive program

  • Disinclination to travel due to civil unrest
  • Failure to obtain necessary visas, passports or other documents required for travel
  • Commission or attempted commission of any illegal act
  • Suicide, attempted suicide or intentionally self-inflicted injury
  • Being under the influence of any narcotic, legal recreational marijuana or other controlled substance at the time of a loss (except if the narcotic or other controlled substance is taken as prescribed by a physician)
  • Disinclination to travel, a country closing its borders or a travel supplier canceling or changing travel arrangements due to an epidemic or pandemic
  • Default of the common carrier resulting from financial insolvency or financial insolvency of a travel agency, tour operator or travel supplier
  • War, undeclared war, civil war, insurrection, rebellion, revolution, warlike acts by a military force or personnel, any action taken in hindering or defending against any of these, the destruction or seizure of property for a military purpose or any consequences of any of these acts (war does not include terrorism)

Additionally, Chase won't provide trip cancellation coverage for trips booked to any area associated with terrorist activity. Plus, trip interruption coverage won't be provided for loss caused by or resulting from:

  • Travel arrangements that a travel supplier cancels or changes unless the cancellation results from severe weather or an organized strike affecting public transportation
  • Any terrorist incident or travel warning within 25 miles of your or your traveling companion's place of permanent residence within 30 days before the initial deposit date or booking date of the trip
  • A terrorist incident within 25 miles of an airport, booked lodging or destination host's location within 30 days of your initial deposit date or booking date of the trip

What expenses are covered?

visa signature trip interruption insurance

In general, Chase will only reimburse you for eligible nonrefundable, prepaid travel expenses charged by a travel supplier or redeposit fees imposed by a rewards program administrator. However, for trip interruption, Chase may also reimburse you for the following:

  • Change fees
  • Costs to return a rental vehicle to the closest rental agency
  • Costs to return your vehicle to your closest leased or owned residence
  • Ground transportation expenses up to $250 to directly transport you for necessary medical treatment (excluding transportation in vehicles operated by a medical facility or specifically designed to transport sick or injured individuals)
  • Prepaid, unused and nonrefundable land, air or sea arrangements (if you must postpone a trip due to a covered loss and set a new departure date)

But, if your trip cancellation or interruption results in a credit from a travel supplier, you will not receive any payment for that portion of the eligible travel expenses until the credit expires. And additional transportation expenses will not be reimbursed, including the difference in cost between the original fare or any new fare to return home or rejoin the trip.

Other select Chase credit cards

Several other Chase cards, including the United Explorer Card , Chase Freedom Flex and Chase Freedom Unlimited , also provide trip cancellation and interruption insurance.

However, these cards have far fewer covered expenses than the Chase cards discussed in the previous section. In particular, these cards only cover nonrefundable prepaid passenger fares.

The Chase Freedom Flex guide to benefits , for instance, covers you in similar cases as the more premium Chase cards above:

  • Nonrefundable prepaid travel expenses charged by a cruise line, airline, railroad or another common carrier
  • Change fees to a travel supplier (if you interrupt your travel instead of canceling)
  • Redeposit fees to a rewards program administrator
  • Ground transportation expenses up to $250 for transport to necessary medical treatment (excluding transportation in vehicles operated by a medical facility or specifically designed to transport sick or injured individuals; only for trip interruption)
  • Prepaid unused nonrefundable land, air or sea arrangements (if you must postpone a trip due to a covered loss and set a new departure date)

Chase may reimburse you up to $1,500 per person per trip. However, there is a reimbursement cap of $6,000 for all covered persons on the same trip.

  • You or an immediate family member dies or experiences accidental bodily injury, disease or physical illness that prevents you from traveling (as verified by a physician)
  • Your common carrier defaults as a result of financial insolvency

  • Your nonrefundable common carrier ticket (but only once any unused credit voucher you get from the common carrier expires)

Visa Infinite cards

visa signature trip interruption insurance

Although some Visa Infinite cards offer their own trip cancellation and interruption insurance, all Visa Infinite credit cards issued by U.S. banks provide a basic level of protection.

Visa Infinite cards offer trip cancellation and interruption protection covering the cardholder (you) and your immediate family when you purchase common carrier travel with your card. This benefit can reimburse up to $2,000 per trip for nonrefundable common carrier fares if you must cancel or interrupt your trip for a covered reason.

You can see a quick overview of the Visa Infinite protections on Visa's website . However, your card's guide to benefits will have the full details.

Who is covered?

visa signature trip interruption insurance

Who is covered by credit card trip cancellation and interruption insurance varies greatly. For example, eligible premium Chase cards cover the cardholder and immediate family members when the cardholder pays for all or a portion of a trip with their card account or rewards associated with their account. For these cards, an immediate family member is someone with any of the following relationships to the cardholder:

Spouse, and parents thereof; sons and daughters, including adopted children and stepchildren; parents, including stepparents; brothers and sisters; grandparents and grandchildren; aunts or uncles; nieces or nephews; and Domestic Partner and parents thereof, including Domestic Partners or Spouses of any individual of this definition.

Immediate family members also include legal guardians or wards for premium Chase cards. And the guide to benefits for the Chase Sapphire Preferred notes that immediate family members do not need to travel with the cardholder for benefits to apply.

On the other hand, eligible American Express cards cover the cardholder, their family members and traveling companions. The guide to benefits for eligible Amex cards defines a traveling companion as "an individual who has made advanced arrangements with you or your Family Members to travel together for all or part of a Covered Trip" and family members as:

A spouse, Domestic Partner, or unmarried dependent child up to age 19 (or under age twenty-six (26) if a full time student at an accredited college or university).

So although Amex will cover traveling companions, you'll need to charge their common carrier fares to your eligible Amex card. On the other hand, Chase doesn't cover traveling companions but does provide a broad interpretation of family and doesn't require round-trip common carrier travel.

How do I file a trip cancellation or trip interruption insurance claim?

  • Contact your issuer: Call your credit card's benefits administrator or start a claim online. Even if you believe your insurance will cover you after reading your card's guide to benefits, it is usually a good idea to call the number on the back of your card. Doing so will let you ensure you're covered, learn about deadlines for making your claim and determine what documents you'll need to collect.
  • Submit on time: Most claims must be made within 20-60 days of the cancellation to be eligible for reimbursement, depending on your specific card issuer's guidelines.
  • Present evidence: After you present your claim, a benefits administrator will give you further instructions to file your claim. It'll help to submit physical documentation with your claim (such as receipts, doctor's notes and weather advisories), plus anything else that can help validate your claim.

visa signature trip interruption insurance

A benefits administrator can usually walk you through specific steps to make your claim. Luckily, many card issuers also allow you to make claims online, so you may not even need to hop on the phone to send any physical documents.

Bottom line

The trip cancellation and interruption insurance provided by select cards can come in handy when something unexpected forces you to cancel or interrupt a trip.

However, there are many exclusions. So it pays to read the guide to benefits on your favorite cards. By doing so, you can determine the best card for booking flights and consider whether it's better to rely on the travel insurance provided by your card or purchase travel insurance .

For Capital One products listed on this page, some of the above benefits are provided by Visa® or Mastercard® and may vary by product. See the respective Guide to Benefits for details, as terms and exclusions apply.

Why trust us?

Visa Signature is the middle tier of Visa benefits and offers perks in addition to those from the basic tier, including zero fraud liability, travel perks, purchase protections and more. Your specific benefits will depend on your card issuer.

Portions of this article were drafted using an in-house natural language generation platform . The article was reviewed, fact-checked and edited by our editorial staff .

Even though Visa , one of the two biggest credit card networks in the world, doesn’t directly issue credit cards to cardholders like credit card issuers do, the network still offers its own set of benefits for cardholders to enjoy. All Visa credit cards, which use Visa as their network, are split into three benefits categories: Visa Traditional, Visa Signature and Visa Infinite.

Visa Signature is the middle tier of benefits between the basic Visa Traditional and the high-end Visa Infinite. In addition to the standard perks of a Visa Traditional, the Visa Signature tier provides a number of travel and lifestyle benefits and protections. Learn more about which benefits the Visa Signature tier offers and how they compare to those of other benefit tiers.

  • What does Visa Signature mean?

The term Visa Signature refers to the package of benefits that Visa provides to its cardholders. As the middle tier, Visa Signature offers all the benefits of a Visa Traditional but less than those of a Visa Infinite. More specifically, many Visa Traditional perks are core benefits related to identity protection and fraud liability. At the Visa Signature level, the perks expand to include different types of travel insurances and purchase protections.

Visa Signature perks are offered on top of any benefits and rewards that the card issuer provides. They’re also effective automatically — cardholders do not need to enroll to take advantage of the network’s perks.

  • Visa Signature core benefits

Visa Signature’s basic perks mirror those provided by Visa Traditional, with the added benefit of travel and emergency assistance services. These basic benefits are listed below:

  • Zero liability : This protects you against fraudulent charges and ensures you only have to pay for charges you have authorized.
  • Lost or stolen card reporting : If your Visa Signature card is lost or stolen, you can call a representative at any time for a replacement.
  • Emergency card replacement : After you’ve reported your card stolen or damaged, Visa can work with your card issuer to ship a replacement card in 24-72 hours.
  • Emergency cash disbursement : While waiting for a replacement card to arrive, Visa can also wire cash to a location near you.
  • Roadside dispatch : In case of car troubles, you can call the roadside dispatch through your Visa Signature for services such as towing, unlocking your car or jump starting. It’s worth noting, however, that you have to pay for each service you require.
  • Travel and emergency assistance services : You get access to a multilingual hotline for travel assistance 24/7, 365 days a year, which can be used to get help with medical referrals, emergency transportation, legal referrals, lost luggage and more.

Visa Signature additional protections and travel benefits

Visa Signature also offers a host of additional protections to cardholders, though they vary by card issuer.

The available protections and services may include:

  • Auto rental collision damage waiver : If you refuse the collision damage waiver coverage provided by the car rental company, you’ll receive coverage for damage, theft, towing and loss-of-use charges.
  • Baggage delay reimbursement : You may get reimbursed for up to $300 if your baggage is delayed or misdirected for more than four hours.
  • Lost luggage reimbursement : You can get reimbursed for lost or damaged baggage, whether they’re checked bags or carry-ons.
  • Global Entry statement credit : You can receive a $100 credit on your card account for the Global Entry program application fee.
  • Trip delay reimbursement : When you’re delayed for over 12 hours by a covered incident, you may get up to a $300 reimbursement.
  • Trip cancellation/trip interruption reimbursement : If your trip is canceled or interrupted, you can receive funds for the non-refundable portion of your transportation fare.
  • Hotel theft protection : If personal items are stolen from your hotel room in the U.S. or Canada, you may be reimbursed for their value.
  • Travel accident insurance : Coverage is provided for up to $250,000 in case an accident occurs while traveling that results in a loss of limb, sight, speech, life or other appendages.
  • Emergency medical/dental : This protection will cover up to $2,500 per person in emergency medical and dental expenses when you’re abroad.
  • Emergency evacuation : If you are sick or injured and use your Visa Signature to purchase travel to the closest medical facility for treatment, you could receive reimbursement for the transportation fare for up to $10,000.
  • Extended warranty protection : Your Visa Signature can extend the manufacturer’s warranty by up to one additional year on eligible purchases (not just travel purchases), such as a television or smartphone.
  • Cell phone protection : Your mobile phone can be covered for damage or theft (with a $50 deductible) as long as you pay your phone bill every month with the Visa Signature.
  • Purchase security : New items are covered against damage or theft within the first 90 days of purchase.
  • Price protection : If you manage to find a lower price (in print) for an eligible item, such as a smartwatch, video game or a dress, you can receive a refund for the difference.
  • Return protection : If a merchant won’t accept a return, you can get reimbursed for the item for up to $250 within the first 90 days of the purchase date.

In addition, some Visa Signature cards come with partner discounts. For example, Skillshare grants free access to its online platform for three months and then 20 percent off its annual membership after the three-month trial.

Depending on your card, you may also enjoy access to the Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection and Concierge Service. The Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection is a collection of more than 900 hotels, and Visa Signature cardholders can take advantage of several exclusive hotel benefits, including complimentary room upgrades upon arrival (when available), breakfast for two, Wi-Fi and more when making reservations through the Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection portal.

Visa Signature cardholders also have access to the notable Visa Signature Concierge service. Available 24/7, the service works much like a personal assistant, providing personalized advice and recommendations on travel, dining and entertainment.

How Visa Signature compares to other benefit tiers

As previously mentioned, Visa Signature is the middle level between Visa Traditional and Visa Infinite. Cards at the Visa Traditional tier offer many of the core benefits mentioned above, such as lost or stolen card reporting and roadside dispatch . Cards at the Visa Infinite offer even more travel perks that the Visa Signature does not, such as missed connection insurance.

We compared the Visa benefits packages below.

As you can see from the table, the Visa Signature and Visa Infinite tiers offer many of the same benefits. A few Visa Infinite perks, such as return protection, provide coverage up to a larger dollar amount. Certain benefits, such as Visa Infinite Concierge services, are meant exclusively for Visa Infinite cardholders — their customer service phone number is different from the Visa Signature one.

How to qualify for a Visa Signature card

Unfortunately, it’s mostly unknown exactly how to qualify for a Visa Signature versus a Visa Traditional or Visa Infinite. We do know that cardholders of a Visa Signature must have an initial credit limit of at least $5,000. And Visa Signature cards tend to be travel credit cards charging low or no annual fees. Visa Infinite cards, in contrast, are typically luxury cards with premium annual fees.

In general, you need at least a good credit score to qualify for mid-tier travel cards. However, since Visa is a credit card network and not an issuer, it cannot approve or deny you for a specific benefit tier based on your credit score. Which tier you end up with seems to be mostly left up to the card issuer.

How to know if you already have a Visa Signature card

Before you apply for a new Visa Signature card, check your wallet. You could hold one without even knowing it. If you suspect you have one but the card face doesn’t specify, you can always contact your card issuer using the number on the back of the card.

Once you’ve determined you have a Visa Signature, you can check the benefits your card provides by reading the mailer that arrived alongside your cardholder agreement.

Bottom line

Visa Signature is the middle tier of benefits, between Visa Traditional and Visa Infinite, that features exclusive benefits, such as travel and purchase protections, trip cancellation insurance, concierge services and more. Many popular credit cards are Visa Signatures, so you could have access to even more card perks than you realize. If you already have a Visa Signature, see which perks you receive by reading the fine print of your benefits guide.

There are dozens of reasons to pay for your purchases with a credit card instead of a debit card or cash, including the prospect of earning rewards. After all, the best rewards credit cards let consumers earn cash back, flexible points or travel rewards for each dollar they spend, and many offer a large initial sign-up bonus as well.

Not only that, but paying with plastic is easily more secure than other payment methods since most credit cards come with zero liability for fraudulent purchases . Further, many credit cards come with added consumer protections and insurance products that can help you save money or avoid financial losses in specific situations.

Purchase protection is one such benefit, and some Bank of America credit cards offer this perk through Visa. This guide goes over Bank of America purchase protection, how it works and how you can file a claim if you need to.

What is purchase protection on Bank of America cards?

Purchase protection is a credit card perk that can provide you with reimbursement or the repair of an item that is damaged or stolen within a specific period after you buy it. You have to pay for the item with a credit card that offers this coverage for it to apply.

As an issuer, Bank of America itself doesn’t offer purchase protection. However, Visa provides this benefit on Bank of America cards on the Visa network.

On eligible Bank of America Visa cards, purchase protection is good for 90 days from an item’s date of purchase. Coverage limits vary by card.

How does purchase protection work on Bank of America cards?

For your Bank of America purchase protection to come into play, you need to be a cardholder of a Bank of America Visa Signature credit card that offers this perk. If the item you purchase is lost or damaged during the coverage period of 90 days from the date of purchase, then you can apply for reimbursement or repair coverage with Visa.

As an example of how purchase protection works , imagine you purchased a new tablet from Best Buy and paid with an eligible Bank of America Visa credit card that offers purchase protection. If your tablet stopped working 30 days after you bought it, you would probably be pretty miffed, yet you wouldn’t be able to return your tablet to Best Buy since they have a strict 15-day return period in most cases.

With purchase protection from your Visa credit card, however, you could apply for repair or replacement of your tablet regardless of Best Buy’s policy.

What kind of purchases does purchase protection cover on Bank of America cards?

Purchase protection can cover almost any purchase you make with your eligible Visa credit card ranging from a new laptop computer to a sweater or a kitchen full of appliances. However, this is only true provided damage or theft occurs within the 90-day window from the date of purchase.

What does purchase protection on Bank of America cards not cover?

Purchase protection on Bank of America cards does come with a standard set of exclusions. Items that will not receive purchase protection, even if you pay with your credit card, include (but are not limited to):

  • Animals and live plants
  • Antiques and collectibles
  • Boats and watercraft
  • Computer software
  • Items purchased for resale
  • Items that mysteriously disappear
  • Purchases in the care of a common carrier (e.g. airline, cruise line, etc.)
  • Medical equipment
  • Perishables
  • Real estate
  • Rented or leased items
  • Purchases that are used or pre-owned

Which Bank of America credit cards are eligible for purchase protection?

Visa Signature offers purchase protection on the following Bank of America Visa Signature cards:

Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card

Bank of america® travel rewards credit card, bank of america® premium rewards® credit card.

There are also a few co-branded Bank of America Visa Signature cards that come with this perk.

Purchase protection on Bank of America Visa Signature cards

As you can see, most of these cards offer up to $500 per claim in purchase protection, except for the Premium Rewards with a generous limit of $10,000 per claim. If you are eager to gain this important protection for items you buy, the Premium Rewards card should be on your radar.

The Bank of America Premium Rewards card starts you off with 50,000 points worth $500 when you spend $3,000 on your card within 90 days of account opening. You can also earn unlimited 2X points on travel and dining purchases and 1.5X points on everything else. A $95 annual fee applies, but you’ll qualify for perks like up to $100 airline incidental statement credits annually, up to $100 toward Global Entry or TSA PreCheck membership every four years and no foreign transaction fees.

Consumer protections you’ll receive with the Bank of America Premium Rewards card include purchase protection, trip delay reimbursement, trip interruption and cancellation insurance, coverage for lost and delayed baggage, emergency evacuation and transportation coverage, return protection , extended warranty on eligible items , roadside dispatch and more.

The Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card is a flexible rewards card that earns 3 percent cash back in your category of choice, including gas, online shopping, dining, travel, drugstores or home improvement or furnishing purchases, plus 2 percent at grocery stores and wholesale clubs (up to $2,500 of combined purchases each quarter in both bonus categories, then 1 percent). All other purchases earn 1 percent back.

As a welcome offer, you can get $200 cash back by spending at least $1,000 in combined purchases during your first 90 days.

You’ll also get Visa Signature perks, including extended warranty coverage, Visa Signature® Concierge, roadside dispatch and travel and emergency assistance.

With the Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card, you can earn 1.5 points per dollar on all qualifying purchases. Despite being a travel card, the Travel Rewards works more like a cash back card, allowing you to redeem rewards toward statement credits on travel or dining purchases.

Unlike many other travel credit cards, the Bank of America Travel Rewards doesn’t have much to offer when it comes to additional perks. Besides basic benefits, like free access to your credit score and overdraft protection, you’ll get Visa Signature perks and access to BankAmeriDeals.

Currently, the card is offering 25,000 bonus points after you spend at least $1,000 in qualifying purchases within 90 days of opening the account.

Bank of America® Premium Rewards® credit card information last updated on 10.22.2021

How to file a claim with purchase protection on Bank of America cards

If you want to file a purchase protection claim, you can start the process by calling 1-800-VISA-911 or the number on the back of your credit card within 60 days of the damage or theft. From there, the benefits administrator will ask you some basic questions about your claim and send you a claim form to fill out.

At this point, you’ll need to complete your claim form and return it to Bank of America within 90 days of the damage or theft. The documentation you’ll need to provide includes:

  • Your completed and signed claim form
  • The receipt for your purchase
  • A police report filed within 48 hours of the incident in the case of theft
  • A copy of your primary insurance policy’s declarations page to determine your deductible
  • Documentation of any other settlement regarding the damage or theft
  • Any other documentation needed to prove your claim

The bottom line

Purchase protection may not seem as important as rewards and other cardholder perks, but this coverage can come in handy if you need it. This is especially true for pricey purchases you might pay for with your credit card, and it’s nice to know that Bank of America purchase protection can keep you covered.

Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Card review

Rates and fees

Card comparison, is the wells fargo autograph journey℠ card right for you, bottom line.

New Wells Fargo Autograph Journey Visa Card members can earn 60,000 rewards points after spending $4,000 on purchases with the card in the first three months of account opening. You can currently redeem Wells Fargo rewards points for one cent per point (though they'll likely be worth more when you can transfer them to travel loyalty programs) which means the bonus is worth at least $600.

The Wells Fargo Autograph Journey Visa Card has a $50 annual airline credit, which you'll earn when you make an eligible purchase of at least $50. This easy-to-use benefit applies to anything from airfare to baggage fees. If you take the airline credit at face value, it makes the card's effective annual fee $45 (down from $95).

Cardholders will also appreciate this card's travel protections, which include:

  • Travel and emergency assistance
  • Rental car coverage (secondary in U.S.)
  • Lost baggage reimbursement
  • Roadside Dispatch
  • Trip cancellation and interruption protection
  • Travel accident insurance
  • Cell phone protection

As a Visa Signature® card , you can use Visa Signature Concierge and book stays with the Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection. The concierge services can help you get travel, entertainment and dinner reservations. And when you reserve a stay through the Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection, you'll receive benefits such as free breakfast for two, room upgrades (when available) and a $25 food and beverage credit.

How to earn and redeem rewards

The Wells Fargo Autograph Journey Visa Card is one of the most rewarding cards for booking hotels and flights. A nice convenience with this card is that you don't need to book through a specific site or travel portal to earn the following high rates on your purchases:

  • 5X points on hotels
  • 4X points on airlines
  • 3X points on all other travel
  • 3X points on restaurants
  • 1X points on all other purchases

You can redeem Wells Fargo Rewards in many ways, including gift cards , travel (booked through Wells Fargo), statement credit and ATM withdrawals. All of these redemptions provide a value of one cent per rewards point, so 10,000 points are worth $100.

Once travel partner transfers go live on April 4, 2024, you'll have an opportunity to dramatically boost the value and versatility of your Wells Fargo Rewards. The initial lineup of partners is:

  • Choice Privileges®
  • Air France-KLM
  • Flying Blue
  • Avianca LifeMiles
  • British Airways Executive Club
  • Iberia Plus

Wells Fargo plans to announce new transfer partners, but this is a useful starting group. With these partners, you can book flights with every major airline alliance and most of the biggest U.S.-based airlines.

If you're interested in flights on domestic U.S. airlines, you can book American Airlines and Alaska Airlines flights through British Airways, with flights under 650 miles in distance for just 7,500 points and flights under 1,151 miles for just 9,000 points. You can reserve flights on United Airlines through Avianca for as little as 7,500 miles one-way. And if you want to book a flight on Delta, you can book through its partner Air France-KLM.

Let's say you want to visit Europe — you could transfer the 60,000 points you earn from the welcome bonus to Avianca and book a round-trip award from almost anywhere in the U.S. to your European destination. Avianca often charges fewer miles for certain trans-Atlantic flights, so you could have points left over after visiting Europe

If you want to fly in style, Iberia offers one-way business-class awards from cities such as Chicago, Boston and New York to Spain for only 34,000 miles each way. That's a great deal for a ticket that can easily cost more than $3,500.

The Wells Fargo Autograph Journey Visa Card charges a $95 annual fee. It has no foreign transaction fees and the standard APR is a variable 21.24%, 26.24%, or 29.99% based on your creditworthiness.

Read our Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card review .

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is similar to the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey Visa Card . Both cards have a $95 annual fee, travel protections and offer a variety of redemption options (including points transfers).

However, the Sapphire Preferred stands out in a few ways. It has a more robust list of travel protections including, trip delay reimbursement, primary rental car insurance, purchase protection and extended warranty protection . Unless you need cell phone coverage , the Sapphire Preferred has a better set of built-in insurance benefits compared to the Autograph Journey.

The Autograph Journey card earns more for most travel purchases, but the problem is Wells Fargo currently has a much smaller list of transfer partners. You can transfer the points you earn with Chase to 14 airlines and hotels including, Hyatt, Marriott, Southwest, Air Canada, Virgin Atlantic and United. As Wells Fargo adds more partners it may catch up, but right now Chase Ultimate Rewards points have a higher potential value and provide more versatility.

Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Visa® Card vs. Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card

Capital one venture rewards credit card.

5 Miles per dollar on hotel and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel, 2X miles per dollar on every other purchase

Earn 75,000 bonus miles once you spend $4,000 on purchases within 3 months from account opening

N/A for purchases and balance transfers

19.99% - 29.99% variable

$0 at the Transfer APR, 4% of the amount of each transferred balance that posts to your account at a promotional APR that Capital One may offer to you

See rates and fees , terms apply.

If you don't spend much on travel or dining, the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card can be more rewarding because it earns at least 2X miles on every purchase. That means you could earn double the rewards on any purchases that fall outside of the Autograph Journey's bonus categories.

Capital One has 18 travel partners and direct access to all of the programs partnered with Wells Fargo except for Aer Lingus and Iberia. However, both of those airlines are part of the Avios program and you can transfer your Capital One miles from British Airways to Aer Lingus and Iberia. The only clear advantage the Autograph Journey has in the points transfer department is a better 1:2 transfer ratio to Choice Hotels. Unless you base your travel plans around using Choice points, the Venture Rewards card may be a stronger option for consumers who don't spend heavily on travel and dining.

It won't be hard for anyone interested in travel to justify having and holding the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey Visa Card . The points you'll earn for hotel (5X) and airline (4X) purchases are stunningly high and apply to any purchase in those categories. Even if you didn't earn bonus rewards points with hotels and airlines, you could make a strong case for getting this card because of the 3X points it earns for general travel and dining purchases. Plus, the $50 annual airline credit shouldn't be hard to use and helps offset more than half of the card's $95 annual fee.

However, if you want to earn rewards on spending other than dining and travel, other cards might be a better fit. And while the Autograph Journey has many good insurance benefits, it's missing a few key coverages such as primary rental car coverage .

The Wells Fargo Autograph Journey Visa Card has come out of the gate running and already compares favorably to the top travel credit cards. You'll be hard-pressed to find a more rewarding option for hotel and airline purchases . Cardholders will also soon have access to transfer partners, and although the list of partners is smaller than comparable programs, it will grow from here.

Breeze’s most loyal flyers can breathe a sigh of relief. Breeze Airways has released its first-ever Breeze Easy™ Visa® Credit Card * The information for the Breeze Easy™ Visa® Credit Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. with Barclays. The card provides the ability to earn up to 10 BreezePoints per $1 via its rebranded Breezy Rewards loyalty program, helping travelers save even more money on flights.

Since 2021, Breeze Airways has taken a fresh approach to flying with new routes between smaller regional airports and sought-after tourist destinations. Combined with affordable fares, this recipe for success has panned out well for the small airline, which was started by JetBlue founder David Neeleman.

“We’ve expanded rapidly since we took to the skies in May 2021,” said David Neeleman, Founder and CEO, Breeze Airways, in a statement shared with USA TODAY Blueprint. “Combined with Barclays’ trusted track record with major travel brands, I’m confident the Breeze Easy Visa will be the airline card of choice for Breeze guests and frequent travelers.”

Breeze Easy Visa Signature card rewards and details

The Breeze Easy Visa Signature card comes with an $89 annual fee, which is on par with many popular airline credit cards on the market. It’s clear the card’s key selling feature is the ability for its most loyal flyers to pile up the BreezePoints:

  • Up to 10 points per $1 on Nicer Bundles, Nicest Bundles and trip add-ons (5 points per $1 when the flight is purchased, plus 5 points per $1 once the flight is completed).
  • Up to 4 points per $1 on Nice Bundles (2 points per $1 when the flight is purchased, plus 2 points per $1 when flight is completed).
  • 2 points per $1 on eligible grocery store and restaurant purchases (including inflight food and beverages.
  • 1 point per $1 on other purchases.

The airline’s Breezy Rewards frequent flyer program offers straightforward rewards, where each point is worth one cent apiece. BreezePoints can be redeemed easily at checkout on the airline’s website or mobile app for future flights or trip add-ons.

There are a few other noteworthy perks for Breeze Easy cardholders. While BreezePoints typically expire 24 months from the date they were issued, these rewards won’t expire so long as someone has a Breeze Easy card. In addition, cardholders can earn 7,500 annual bonus points after spending $10,000 each card membership year, worth $75 for future travel.

Besides being a points powerhouse, the Breeze Easy card offers Group 1 Priority boarding and free in-flight Wi-Fi on Breeze’s Airbus aircraft, which normally costs $8 per flight, for all travel companions booked on the same reservation.

What’s notable is that the Breeze Easy Visa card does not offer any free bag benefits as you may expect from an airline card. Breeze operates on a low-cost model, so travelers will have to pay extra (or redeem their BreezePoints) for their carry-on and checked bags if they’re not already bundled into the fare class.

Cardholders can earn 50,000 BreezePoints after spending $2,000 in the first 90 days of account opening as part of its welcome offer. That’s worth $500 in Breeze flights or trip add-ons — more than five times the cost of the annual fee.

Who is the Breeze Easy Visa Signature card for?

The card is available at MyBreezeEasyCard.com starting March 26, 2024 and is catered to flyers who can fully leverage Breeze’s niche, regional network. After all, the airline’s operating hubs across the country are mainly focused on smaller- to mid-sized airports. Breeze has added flights to more than 50 airports (and counting) to bring nonstop service to airports that normally don’t get a lot of love.

For instance, a traveler based in Charleston, S.C., can fly on a nonstop Breeze route to visit more than two dozen cities, including Los Angeles or Phoenix. Without these Breeze flights, the same traveler would have to connect in busy metropolitan airports like Atlanta or Dallas to get to their final destination.

This type of traveler can greatly benefit from a Breeze Easy Visa Signature card, with the potential of earning an enormous haul of BreezePoints from a combination of travel and everyday spending. Not to mention, there are other money-saving perks like complimentary Wi-Fi that can justify the $89 ongoing annual fee.

However, it’s always worth comparing your options when it comes to travel credit cards . For those not necessarily loyal to a single airline, cards like the $95-annual-fee Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or the $95-annual-fee Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card * The information for the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. may be better suited to earn and redeem rewards on all travel expenses — and not just Breeze flights.
