Discover the Best East Coast Tours From New York

The coastline where the eastern states meet the North Atlantic Ocean. Also known as the Eastern Seaboard, the Atlantic Coast, the Atlantic Seaboard.

East Coast Tours – All You Ever Needed To Know

Culture and history abound in the cities on the East Coast, and with so much to see and do its overwhelming trying to plan a trip here. One of the most convenient ways you can learn more about the history and sample the culture is by booking an East Coast tour package. There are many options designed to suit the different needs of travelers.

If you’re looking to see one of the great wonders of the world, you can book one of the Niagara Falls tours (USA and Canadian sides of the falls are often included) and also get to visit the Thousand Islands – a nature lover’s paradise. Or if you wish for something more upbeat, you can sign up for a New York tour package and spend several days sightseeing, gazing out over the city from the top of the Empire State Building, and perhaps catch a show on Broadway.

But there are also East Coast tours that let you do both! Consider visiting not just New York City and Niagara Falls, though. Your package could also include exploring the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C., to see the White House and the Lincoln Memorial, as well as a few nights in Boston and Philadelphia to learn about the country’s rich colonial history and struggle for independence.

And don’t be content with just visiting the U.S. You can travel up north to Canada with many East Coast tours from NYC where “Old City” Quebec awaits. There are also stops in Montreal to view architectural wonders in Canada’s second largest city. Ottawa, home of Canada’s parliament buildings and Toronto, Canada’s financial capital are popular places to visit on an East Coast tour to Canada.

Or you can head south from as far up as New York, traveling to Tennessee , stopping by the Luray Caverns of Virginia before heading to family-friendly Gatlinburg and the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. Breath-taking Ruby Falls, 1120 feet underground in Chattanooga is a definite must see on tour to Tennessee.

For nature lovers, the New England states are at their most colorful in autumn when crisp foliage decorates the trees and ground in every shade of yellow, red, purple, magenta, orange and brown. The summer is a great time to join one of the many US tours that visit Martha's Vineyard's warm relaxing beaches in Massachusetts. You can explore the many shops and restaurants as you stargaze for the many Hollywood celebrities that venture to the island at this time of year.

Consider a visit to New Jersey if you are in the mood for a faster pace. From Atlantic City Casino gaming to the Jersey Shore Boardwalk in Ocean City, you will enjoy fine dining and a nightlife that takes you into the wee hours of the morning. That same multi-day tour to Baltimore , giving you the chance to shop at Tysons Corner Center – one of the East Coast’s largest malls.

Of course, you can begin your tour in any of the major cities on the East Coast. Your vacation package which often offers a complimentary pick up service and bundles together hotel accommodations, meals and admission to certain attractions in one flat fee. All of the most popular East Coast travel destinations can be on your itinerary no matter where your tour starts or ends.

You are sure to meet travelers from all over the world when you book a tour package to the eastern USA. Its cities and towns have so many world famous sites that people come from all over to experience them firsthand.

What people love about eastern usa tours from new york city.

Overall the 2 tour guides were good, especially Brian who guided us from NJ La Quinta to Philadelphia, Amish Country to DC and back to NY. Loved his sense of humor, his knowledge- will definitely recommend him to anyone! Great job Brian! And thank you !!
A hectic and fast paced trip, starting with early mornings. Loved Niagara Falls and being able to go to the Canadian side for one night (remember to apply for a Canadian Esta and bring your passport). Pennsylvania and Amish country side was a treat. Wish we had more time there. Love hearing about American history. Then Washington DC- amazing city. We disembarked after touring DC monuments and aeronautical museum and spent two more days in DC. Wharf, eateries, sights and monuments within reach.

Welcome to Eastern United States

The east coast of the United States is where it all started in 1925... when a traveling salesman named Arthur Tauck designed a new kind of "vacation". We have grown by leaps and bounds since then with journeys now on all seven continents, but it is the east coast region that we hold close to our hearts. Enriching travel experiences exist in... the wilderness of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park... aboard a Maine lobsterman's boat as he hauls in his catch... at a clambake on Cape Cod... and on our journeys that capture the kaleidoscope of fall colors throughout this entire region.

Ken burns american journeys, exclusive to tauck – telling the american story through ken burns american journeys.

Filmmakers Ken Burns and Dayton Duncan, America's premier storytellers, work alongside Tauck's team of tour architects to meticulously craft enriching travel experiences throughout the US. They bring to life the themes and stories from their award-winning documentary films, sharing exclusive insights into the people, places and events that shaped the history of the United States, taking guests' travel experiences to a deeper level. Together, we've created over 100 original film vignettes, developed new tours and Tauck Ken Burns Events, and enhanced existing special Events.

New York, New York

There's no other like it... discovering new york city with tauck.

On "The Hudson Valley," New York City is… seeing Rockefeller Center, Times Square, Radio City Music Hall, the Chrysler and Empire State buildings… learning the story of the construction of a Rockefeller Center skyscraper right after the 1929 stock market crash as you view the city from 70 floors up… visiting the poignant National September 11 Memorial & Museum, set within the footprints of the Twin Towers… meeting a NYPD detective who shares insights on the tragedy of 9/11 and the recovery efforts that followed…

Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Only on cape cod....

If you had to boil down "New England" into one place, it might be Cape Cod, extending from the Massachusetts mainland out into the Atlantic. Near the spot where the Pilgrims first landed, it's home to Cape Cod National Seashore, protecting dunes, beaches, marshes, ponds, historic lighthouses and wild cranberry bogs; Provincetown on the tip of the Cape, once a key whaling town, now world-renowned as an arts colony and major summer resort known simply as "P-Town;" and a delicious regional specialty plucked directly from local waters which you may know as "lobster," but locals call "lobstahh."

Boston, Massachusetts

Along the historic streets of boston.

History is indeed alive around every corner of Boston, Massachusetts, often called America's "cradle of liberty"… on green Boston Common, at the Old North Church and Faneuil Hall, along the cobblestone streets of Beacon Hill, in the diverse neighborhoods of the North End with ethnic flavors all their own, aboard "Old Ironsides" at the USS Constitution Museum… and at beloved Fenway Park, Major League Baseball's oldest stadium, home of the Red Sox since 1912…

10 reasons to visit the East Coast in 2024

Head to the USA’s eastern seaboard and you’ll find stylish cities, stunning natural shorelines and diverse cuisine, all celebrated through a packed calendar of events and openings in 2024.

For travellers seeking the best of the USA, the draw of the East Coast is undeniable. Whether it’s taking in the iconic skylines of cities like New York and Philadelphia, indulging in the creative cuisine of Boston or the Carolinas, or exploring destinations that have played a crucial role in the nation’s founding history, an East Coast adventure is hard to beat. But a visit here isn’t just about the big-hitters. Look a little further and you’ll find insightful exhibitions in Virginia, flower-filled celebrations in Pennsylvania and a raft of new openings and seasonal festivals taking place throughout the East Coast this year.

1. Fantastic food festivals

While headline-grabbing events like NYC Restaurant Week offer an opportunity to sample some of the East Coast’s most famous cuisines, southern set-ups such as Miami’s South Beach Wine & Food Festival are equally worthy of a spot on any food-focused itinerary. This four-day event — which features everything from cookery classes and tasting sessions to chef’s table dinners and late-night parties — offers an ideal introduction to Miami’s fast-growing food scene, which saw 12 restaurants in the city awarded a Michelin star in 2023. Notable openings include Pastis Miami — a brasserie-style restaurant run by James Beard Foundation Award winners Keith McNally and Stephen Starr — and Lucky Cat by Gordon Ramsay.

Further north, the summer months in Pittsburgh bring with them a true celebration of the diversity and dynamism of the East Coast’s cuisine in the form of annual events like the Pittsburgh Taco Festival and Pittsburgh VegFest . Most entertaining is July’s Picklesburgh festival, when downtown Pittsburgh is transformed in a celebration of all things pickled. Highlights include pickle-themed cooking demonstrations, special dishes from local food vendors, musical performances and pickle-juice drinking competitions.

2. Illuminating new exhibitions

In Washington, DC, the National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA) reopened in October 2023 after a $70m (£55.3m) renovation that breathed new life into its striking neoclassical building. The first museum in the world dedicated solely to championing women through the arts, the NMWA features more than 5,500 works by over 1,000 artists. The renovations have allowed for extended gallery space, additional research facilities and accessibility infrastructure for the collections, making for an increasingly insightful experience.

This year, you can also catch several temporary East Coast exhibitions that shine a light on lesser-known aspects of American culture. At Richmond’s Library of Virginia , the Indigenous Perspectives exhibition runs until late August 2024 and offers insight into Virginia’s tribal communities. Meanwhile, in Boston, a new exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts (home to 100 galleries) focuses on the ceramic works of Toshiko Takaezu, one of the 20th century’s greatest abstract artists. Aiming to challenge traditional American abstract techniques, Toshiko Takaezu: Shaping Abstraction will run until late September 2024.

3. Alternative historic hotspots

The East Coast’s cities offer a true journey into US history. Key stops include Boston, known as the ‘City of Firsts’, in part due to the presence of the world’s first publicly supported free municipal library and the USA’s first public park; Washington, DC, with its long list of historic monuments; and Philadelphia, whose Independence Hall is where Benjamin Franklin and his compatriots signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776.

But there’s also plenty to learn away from the well-known historical centres. For insight into the nation’s nautical heritage, you can’t beat Maryland’s capital, Annapolis, home to the US Naval Academy . And while you may have heard of the Boston Tea Party, the Yorktown Tea Party in Virginia is equally enthralling. Most merchants here shunned British imports after the events in Boston in 1773. But when the Virginia sailed into Yorktown just under a year later, the boycott of British goods peaked, as locals who’d heard the ship was filled with British tea boarded the vessel and threw the goods into the river. In November 2024, several events will mark the Yorktown Tea Party’s 250th anniversary.

4. Sumptuous stays

With a number of highly anticipated hotel openings in 2024, the East Coast will get a variety of new accommodation options with southern Florida, in particular, seeing serious investment. Wellness will be the focus at the EVEN Hotel Sweetwater — Doral, which opens in summer 2024 just outside Miami’s city centre. In-room amenities can include Peloton bikes and yoga mats, and menus will be designed with health-conscious guests in mind. Equally opulent will be Hilton Singer Island Oceanfront/Palm Beaches Resort , which is set to emerge from a huge makeover in early 2024, part of a $1bn (£790m) development programme in Palm Beach County. Expect refreshed rooms, innovative dining concepts and a beachfront bar.

The inaugural World’s 50 Best Hotels awards of 2023 also featured two New York properties — the Equinox Hotel New York and the Aman New York . Visiting at the start of the year? NYC Hotel Week sees more than 100 hotels offer discounts of around 25%, and is well worth considering for those looking for the most luxurious stay at the best price.

5. The beauty of the blooms

Green-fingered visitors keen to explore the natural beauty of the USA should make a beeline for Pennsylvania, where the annual Philadelphia Flower Show is the country’s longest-running horticultural event. The 2024 edition, ‘United by Flowers’, aims to explore the ability of gardening to connect and inspire people and communities. Expect large-scale floral exhibits, expert-led educational sessions and a ‘Flowers After Hours’ party.

For year-round horticultural activity, head to Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania’s Chester County, where you’ll find 1,100 acres of intricate floral displays and sprawling woodland, as well as several vibrant, plant-filled conservatories. The gardens date back to 1921, and in autumn 2024, several new areas are set to be unveiled as part of ‘Longwood Reimagined: A New Garden Experience’. Don’t miss the new West Conservatory, with its islands of stunning Mediterranean-inspired gardens.

There are plenty of parks elsewhere on the East Coast, too. In Jacksonville, Florida, visitors can enjoy 400 publicly accessible green spaces — including the 46,000-acre Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve . Even New York City, often known as the ‘concrete jungle’, has more than 1,700 parks.

6. Rural road trips

New England continues to inspire road-trippers year round, with a visit in the summer, spring or winter months quickly dispelling the widespread myth that autumn is the only time to visit the region. While routes such as New Hampshire’s Kancamagus Highway are famous for their fall foliage, the area also offers historic covered bridges, thundering waterfalls and diverse forested landscapes, all of which make it one of the USA’s top destinations for road trips. For the ultimate experience, make for Massachusetts and the coastline-hugging Route 127, where the most striking section (Route 127A) connects Rockport to Gloucester. You’ll pass offshore lighthouses and the Gloucester Fisherman’s Memorial, which honours the area’s fishing heritage.

Alternatively, drive along Route 6A — also known as the Old King’s Highway — where highlights include Cape Cod and Provincetown, famous for its quirky boutiques and laid-back atmosphere. It's worth spending at least three days exploring Cape Cod, settling into hotels such as the newly opened 30-room Greyfinch Chatham Inn , just a short walk from the beach. Its beautiful interior pays homage to the area’s nautical history.

7. From sharks to star wars, an education for all ages

For families, there’s much to explore on the East Coast beyond Florida’s famous theme parks. At Miami’s Frost Science Museum , a spherical planetarium and two-million-litre aquarium are ever-popular stops, while the newest exhibition, Sharks, features life-sized shark models and tactile displays.

In Washington, DC, make for the National Museum of American History — where exhibits include Abraham Lincoln’s iconic top hat — and the National Air and Space Museum , where ongoing renovation works saw eight new galleries open in 2022. Its exhibits range from Neil Armstrong’s spacesuit to an X-wing starfighter used in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

For hands-on entertainment, however, Philadelphia’s Please Touch Museum simply can’t be beaten. Its galleries are filled with interactivity — some dedicated to rockets and motor vehicles, while another features a full replica of a Philadelphia neighbourhood.

8. A packed calendar of capital events

Many of the East Coast’s most popular annual events take place in the country’s capital, Washington, DC. From 20 March to 14 April, the National Cherry Blossom Festival celebrates the city coming to life in sumptuous shades of pink. Washington, DC has the largest blooming of cherry trees outside Japan, and marks the occasion annually with an extensive programme of events, parades and performances celebrating Japanese culture.

In June, the city’s Capital Pride Parade and Festival is one of the largest Pride events in the USA, while July will welcome the Smithsonian Folklife Festival . Dating back to 1967, this two-week event celebrates cultural traditions and communities. This year’s festival, Indigenous Voices of the Americas: Celebrating the National Museum of the American Indian , will highlight the traditions of Indigenous peoples with a focus on themes of relevance, resistance, representation and reclamation.

9. State-of-the-art sporting experiences

From the annual Formula One weekend in Miami — also a host city for the FIFA World Cup 2026 — to New York’s US Open Tennis Championships, the cities of the East Coast are known for their world-class sporting events. But 2024 sees a number of additional openings for sports fans to consider. From April through June 2024, The Messi Experience , a multimedia tribute to the famed footballer, will be open at Miami’s Hangar Coconut Grove. Expect high-tech interactive exhibits, skills games, extensive use of projection mapping and incredible 3D visuals.

Or for the ultimate fan experience, head to Orlando, where the Caribe Royale Orlando Resort opened its new Stadium Club in early 2024. This 500-seat sports bar will feature two huge 165-inch XHD projector displays, as well as screens that allow 360-degree immersion and interactive special effects. Snack on stadium-inspired cuisine and be sure to try one of the eight sports simulators that feature everything from American football to zombie dodgeball.

10. Adrenaline-inducing openings

Florida remains the state thrill-seekers typically flock to for an adventure on the East Coast. The most talked-about opening in the USA’s theme park capital this year is the Evermore Orlando Resort , which opened its doors in January 2024 and features a 433-room Conrad Orlando hotel, two Jack Nicklaus-designed golf courses and a range of houses, apartments and villas.

It’s also worth noting that in September 2023, the Brightline train opened its first Orlando extension, which makes it easier than ever to combine a holiday in the city with visits to Miami and Fort Lauderdale. In the parks themselves, new attractions at Universal Studios Florida include Villain-Con Minion Blast, a game featuring characters and backdrops from the Despicable Me and Minions films. Meanwhile at Tampa Bay’s Busch Gardens , Phoenix Rising, a family-friendly suspended roller coaster, will open in spring 2024.

New York City To Atlantic City (The Jersey Shore)

New York City is the perfect place to begin your road trip along the Atlantic Coast. Aside from being an iconic destination all on its own, it's greater metropolitan area has no fewer than three major international airports, so finding a flight from anywhere in the world should be no trouble. If you're renting a car, there are dozens of rental locations in the city.

Driving around New York City can be stressful — there's a lot of congestion on the roads, and parking can be costly. If you're renting a car for your road trip, it's best to wait until you're ready to leave the city. Until then, you can explore New York's unique neighborhoods, museums , nightlife, and food scenes by taking the city's excellent public transportation system. Budget at least a day or two in New York to see  iconic sites like the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Central Park, the Statue of Liberty, and the Empire State Building. With more time, wander around neighborhoods like Soho, Greenwich Village, Manhattan, and Chelsea. Whatever you do, don't forget to try a slice of pizza before hitting the road.

The drive from New York to Atlantic City on the Jersey Shore takes just over two hours, so it's a nice way to start your road trip. Spend a night in Atlantic City exploring the famous boardwalk and trying your luck at some glittering casinos.

Ocracoke, North Carolina

After the hustle and bustle of New York and Atlantic City, you'll be ready for a change of scenery — and Ocracoke Island off the coast of North Carolina is the perfect off-the-beaten-path beach destination along the Atlantic Coast. The trip from Atlantic City to Ocracoke Island will take around 10 hours, including a one-hour ferry ride to the island. So, if you want to break it up, consider stopping halfway in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Somehow, Ocracoke Island remains one of the best kept secrets on the East Coast. The entire island is only 16 miles long and 3 miles wide and was once a favorite hideout of the notorious pirate Blackbeard and his men in the early 1700s. During your stay; you'll have the opportunity to take in historical landmarks and learn plenty of local legends associated with pirate life. Make sure to visit Springer's Point, which was once the location of unhinged pirate parties but now serves as a beautiful nature preserve.

Ocracoke Village is tiny and picturesque, with a variety of tasty restaurants serving freshly caught seafood and some cute shops with local artisan goods, and many of the local restaurants and bars have live music in the evenings. Locals and tourists alike enjoy spending the days sprawled out on the island's spacious white sand beaches, swimming in the Atlantic, riding bikes, and taking scenic boat rides around the island.

Charleston, South Carolina

After spending a few days enjoying the surf and sun on Ocracoke Island, hop back in the car and drive for about nine hours until you reach Charleston, South Carolina. Charleston is one of the most picturesque cities in the southeastern United States, and you should add it to your travel list immediately .

Charleston is known for its historic architecture, cobblestone streets, and laid-back Southern vibes. You can explore art museums and galleries here, catch a theatrical performance, and chow down on delicious Southern cuisine. For excellent shopping and people-watching, stroll down King Street or head to City Market to pick up some souvenirs from local artists and craftspeople. If you're looking for more beach time and less urban exploration, head to nearby Folly Beach, an adorable beach just over 20 minutes from downtown Charleston.

While Charleston is beautiful, it also has a complicated and disturbing history as a former hub of the North American slave trade. There is no denying that the city's wealth and prosperity were due to the exploitation of enslaved Africans and their descendants. While the horrors of that time can never be erased or forgotten, in recent years, the city of Charleston has attempted to preserve Black history with various tours, museum exhibits, and events where you can learn about the many ways African-American culture impacted the city and the American South as a whole.

Savannah, Georgia

After you've enjoyed the city of Charleston and its nearby beaches for a few days, hop back in the car for a short two-hour drive to Savannah, Georgia, which tourists often call  the most friendly destination in the U.S.   With streets draped in Spanish moss, beautiful architecture, and a thriving arts scene, Savannah makes an excellent stop along your East Coast road trip.

The city is home to Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), one of the top-rated art schools in the United States, so it's no surprise that the city has developed a reputation for artistic expression and creativity. As you explore, you'll find plenty of art galleries, music venues, and theaters scattered among historic buildings and cobblestone streets.

With a day or two to spend in Savannah, you'll have time to experience the city's highlights. To cover the most ground, consider taking a hop-on, hop-off trolley tour, which will take you by all of the significant landmarks. For a spooky and unforgettable evening, book the Ghosts and Gravestones tour offered by Old Town Trolley Tours — Savannah is considered one of the most haunted cities in the United States.

Afterward, walk down its famous River Street, located along the waterfront, and admire the views before enjoying some mouthwatering seafood and a delicious cocktail at one of the many restaurants.

Key West, Florida

Key West, Florida, is the southernmost tip of the continental United States, and the drive from Savannah is about 10 hours. If you have time, break up the long stretch in the car with stops in either St. Augustine or West Palm Beach. Key West is one of the most enchanting beach communities in the United States, and there are many adventurous things to do during your visit. The tiny island is made of sand and coral and measures 4 miles long and 1.5 miles wide. To get there, you'll drive along the famous Overseas Highway, a 113-mile stretch with tons of bridges over the ocean and incredible views the entire way.

During your stay in Key West, leave plenty of time to kick back, relax on white sand beaches, and swim in shallow, turquoise waters. If you're an ocean lover, make sure you book one of the snorkeling excursions offered by various tour companies so that you can explore the only barrier reef in the United States. Back in town, you can enjoy excellent seafood restaurants, colorful architecture, and historic sites including the home where Ernest Hemingway lived and wrote many of his most iconic books throughout the 1930s.

If you rent a car for your road trip, you can choose to drop it off in Key West or head back to Miami, where you'll find a major international airport with plenty of options for flights home.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

If you have outdoor activities planned for the first weekend of spring in the Northeast, it may be wise to consider moving them indoors because there is the potential for heavy rain and snow across much of the region.

“This one is going to be big,” FOX Weather meteorologist Bob Van Dillen said.

“It’s going to roll up the Eastern Seaboard over the weekend. It could be a washout for you on Saturday.”

A Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Friday evening through late Saturday night from northern portions of New York into Vermont, New Hampshire and western Maine.

The FOX Forecast Center said the snow will overspread the region from west to east and quickly accumulate starting Friday night. Areas of heavy snow will continue on Saturday before winding down Saturday night.

Total snow accumulations of 6 inches or more are expected in the areas under winter weather alerts, with 8-inch or higher totals possible in the mountains and foothills.

Farther south, heavy rain is expected along the Interstate 95 corridor between New York City and Washington.

The Coastal storm is heading toward the Northeast with flooding rain, snow for first weekend of spring.

The rainy side of this weekend’s storm could lead to flooding concerns along the I-95 corridor in the mid-Atlantic and Northeast as atmospheric moisture levels rise to 200-300% above average for this time of year.

NOAA’s Weather Prediction Center has already highlighted portions of coastal southern New England, Long Island in New York, New Jersey and the Delmarva Peninsula for a Level 2 out of 4 risk of flash flooding on Saturday.

A widespread 1-3 inches of rain is expected from southern and southeastern New England through eastern North Carolina.

The rainy side of this weekend's storm could lead to flooding concerns along the I-95 corridor in the mid-Atlantic as atmospheric moisture levels rise to 200-300% above average for this time of year.

Locally higher totals of 3 inches or more are not ruled out along the mid-Atlantic coast.

The storm is expected to push off the East Coast by Sunday, leading to a dry second half of the weekend across the Northeast and mid-Atlantic.
