We had Michael as our guide and he was very informative and you can tell he loved what he does. This was a fun and great tour of the different parts of the deltas and pathways that leads into the gulf. Definitely would do this again.

Was awesome time well spent.

Was awesome time well spent. Casey was very knowledgeable and an excellent guide. This tour is a hidden gem. We experienced several types of wildlife, including a manatee. Yes, I said MANATEE. I will do this again. Thanks for the experience

The favorite activity voted by our kids!

We enjoyed a lot the kayak tour at 5pm, seeing dolphins far but seeing it anyway! Our guide explained us a lot of things on divers topics, very very interesting! Our teens loved this surprise activity! Thanks a lot from the French family!

AMAZING TOUR GUIDE

kayak tours gulf shores

Our tour guide, Chris, was wonderful from the beginning. He is super friendly and outgoing. He is so knowledgeable about the area, wildlife, Native American history, ecology, birds and sea animals and so much more. He has a great sense of humor and is a true storyteller. I liked that were were a small group (4 kayaks) so that we could have easier conversations. We saw a few dolphins, but you cannot predict if they will be around when you are out there. We did see several eagles, osprey, king fisher, white cranes, the tracks from a nutria, flying mullet. Our tour began at 10:00 and was 3 hours. So worth it! He also recommended a local restaurant in Bon Secour called The Tin Top, and it was a great find! We would definitely go on another kayak tour with him.

Grandkids in town

Really enjoyed all 6 of us. Information shared was very enlightening. Younger kids get a little antsy at slow pace. Never knew how beautiful the Delta was and learned things about gators never knew. Thank you and looking forward to our next cruise. Thank you! Sheryl

I had a great time

kayak tours gulf shores

I had a great time exploring the delta by kayak. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable, and they make it very easy to get in and out of the kayak without even getting wet. Will definitely be back!

My husband and I were on our honeymoon when we visited Mobile and it was great to get onto the water and explore the Delta with Chris! Chris was relaxed, easy to chat to and very knowledgeable about the area and its wildlife. We saw alligators, pelicans (diving!), crabs scurrying along the bottom of the Delta, osprey and other birds. I'd really recommend joining one of Chris' kayaking tours! He is extremely knowledgeable and provided a lot of interesting info about the surrounding area during our kayak tour. Gulf Shores Kayaking: Tours, Rentals, & Tips

Sharing is caring!

Are you looking for an exciting and unforgettable way to explore the waters surrounding Gulf Shores, AL? Gulf Shores kayaking is a perfect outdoor activity that allows you to experience all of the natural beauty that this Alabama town has to offer.

With miles of coastline, bays, marshes, and creeks filled with diverse wildlife, kayaking in Gulf Shores makes for an amazing opportunity to soak up some sunshine while taking in stunning scenery.

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced paddler, gliding through these serene waterways can be both thrilling and peaceful – especially if you have friends and family joining!

While I was visiting Gulf Shores, I was able to take a few kayaking tours myself and visit a few other beautiful places where kayaking is popular.

So here are my suggestions on tours, rental companies, some of the best places to kayak in Gulf Shores, and my personal tips to make your kayaking trip a success.

Pure Aloha Adventures: Guided Kayaking Tour

Coastal segway adventures, cotton bayou, early morning or early evening is best.

Best Gulf Shores Kayaking Tours

Taking a kayaking tour is one of the best ways to explore an area that you’re unfamiliar with. The guides know exactly where to go and proper safety protocols. You’ll also learn about the area you’re visiting.

Sea View Tours: Night Glow Party Tour

glowing kayaks on the beach at night

This is probably one of the most unique kayaking tours that I’ve ever been on. I lucked out and I was the only one on the tour. This is very popular with groups of friends or families though.

These tours are led at night in clear kayaks that glow different colors. One note on getting there – go past the entrance for Caribe Resort and you’ll see a large gravel parking lot on your right. Sea View Tours is in the back right-hand corner of that lot.

The tour takes you out of the marina and around Bird Island which is right there in the Bayou. It was pretty windy on the night that I went out but typically the paddle around the island is pretty easy.

You get to paddle around the island and then you’ll take a break on one of the beaches where you can see ghost crabs and so many different kinds of birds. I really wasn’t expecting to see so much wildlife so that was a nice surprise!

Sea View Tours really does a great job of letting you make the tour your own. You can bring your own cooler, snacks, drinks, and towels if you want to just hang out on the island or you can walk the island and explore for wildlife the whole time.

Make sure you bring a dry bag or box for your phone, keys, and wallet.

WildNative Tours: The Dolphin & Wildlife Kayak Experience

couple on a Gulf Shores kayaking tour

If you love wildlife and learning about the local ecosystem then this WildNative tour is a must-do for you! It’s one of the best Gulf Shores kayaking tours by far.

There are a couple of different ways that the guides can take you but our group went around Oyster Bay, paddling in the Bon Secour River for a bit.

Of course, every tour is different because nature is unpredictable, but you’re very likely to see lots of bird species.

Dolphins are commonly seen as well though not always. We almost didn’t see any but at the last minute, probably a few hundred feet from where we were supposed to take out, a few of them popped up and we got to watch them.

One thing to note though is you aren’t allowed to get very close to them. This is to keep them safe and not disturb them or make them nervous. But if you’re dreaming of getting that epic photo then I wanted to let you down easy.

It was just as exciting as when I was jellyfish and went through a mangrove tunnel while I was kayaking in Marathon, FL though.

Tour groups are pretty small – I was with two other couples plus the guide. It really makes for a great experience. The kayaks are tandem kayaks but can be set up as singles if you’re solo.

They do provide a dry box if you need one for your phone, keys, or wallet and they also give out bottled waters so you can stay hydrated. I always think that’s a nice touch.

You’ll want to fuel up on a good breakfast in Gulf Shores before you head out on this tour – it’ll tire you out!

Pure Aloha Adventures is probably most popular for their Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) tours and rentals but they also offer kayaking tours.

They lead tours at a few different places – Little Lagoon in Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge, Lake Shelby in Gulf State Park, or Lakeside at the Gulf State Park Campground.

Little Lagoon is highly recommended by them since it’s a beautiful area teaming with marine life. Pure Aloha will provide dry bags for you on the tour.

If part of your group wants to paddleboard and part wants to kayak then they can actually accommodate that which is nice.

Kayak Rentals in Gulf Shores & Orange Beach

old pylons sticking out of the water

If you prefer to make your own adventure and don’t want a guide for your Gulf Shores kayaking experience, then check out these rental companies in the area.

Go Go Kayaks

Go Go Kayaks is a popular option for kayak rentals in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. With locations in both Gulf Shores and Fort Morgan, they make it easy to plan your perfect coastal adventure.

They offer single and tandem kayaks so you can go out solo or with a partner, and paddleboard options are also available for a longer-term experience. Kayaks can be rented by the day but paddleboards must be rented for the week.

To make it even better, reservation includes free delivery – just sit back and let them come to you! All of this makes them the ideal source for getting the most out of your time by the ocean.

Gulf Shores Boat and Paddlesports Rental

With free delivery to Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, Fort Morgan, and Perdido Gulf Shores Boat & Paddlesports Rentals is another great option for kayak and paddleboard rentals in the area.

Note that if you’re in the westernmost part of Fort Morgan then a fuel surcharge may be added.

They also offer single and tandem kayaks plus paddleboards. You can rent in 1, 3, or 5 day increments but they will customize rental terms as well if you call.

For anyone in the western part of Fort Morgan you may also have to pay with cash because cell service is too spotty to run credit cards sometimes. Confirm this when you call.

Paddled By You

If you aren’t staying at a beach house or somewhere that you can store kayaks for multiple days, then check out Paddled By You . They do close seasonally in the winter months though so double check that they are open if you’re visiting during the off-season.

They are located on Cotton Bayou and you can rent kayaks for 2, 4, or 8 hours at a time. This would be so fun because they are within paddling distance of multiple restaurants like Tacky Jack’s, Avenue Pub, and Pleasure Island Tiki Bar.

You can also paddle to the islands within Cotton Bayou. You may want to take a look at the Orange Beach Canoe Trail as well because they are located at one of the ten stops along the trail.

Pro tip : They are cash or personal check only and do not accept credit or debit cards.

The same company that leads segway tours in Gulf State Park also rents out the kayaks and paddleboards on Lake Shelby.

This is the quickest and easiest way to get out on the lakes in Gulf State Park and they offer single and tandem kayaks, SUPs, and canoes.

You can rent by the hour or by the day and you can take the kayak wherever you would like in the three connecting lakes inside the park but you must have your rental back by 4pm.

Bring your own dry bag or box and this would be a fantastic place to bring a sandwich for lunch so you could paddle to a secluded part of the lake and have a picnic lunch.

Best Places to Kayak in Gulf Shores & Orange Beach

If you decide to rent kayaks for a few days and need some ideas of where to go, here are a few of the most popular places to kayak near Gulf Shores and Orange Beach.

Want more ideas? Check out the Back Bay Blueway which has 21 different locations to launch your kayak in the area.

Lake Shelby in Gulf State Park

kayaks stacked up against a tree in front of a lake

There are three different lakes in Gulf State Park – Lake Shelby, Middle Lake, and Little Lake. They’re all connected by a man-made canal so you can easily access all three.

Lake Shelby is the largest lake in the system. The Gulf State Park Campground is located on Middle Lake and the most secluded is Little Lake. If you stop at the northern shore of Little Lake you can take a short trail to the Butterfly Garden.

People love swimming, fishing, or just paddling around the lakes in this serene setting. Alligators are found in the lake so just be vigilant of that.

If you have binoculars, those might be helpful to bring because birding is very popular here.

Little Lagoon in Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge

Little Lagoon is another popular Gulf Shores kayaking destination. You’ll find all kinds of wildlife here as well from birds to marine life to amphibians.

You can launch kayaks from the Jeff Friend Trail kayak launch which is located on the northern edge of the lake, toward the western side.

It’s a very nice launch area with a shallow beach that makes it very easy to get in and out of your boat.

If you’re a seasoned kayaker then pack some beach chairs, a cooler, picnic, and head out to find a secluded beach along the lagoon.

It’s one of the best places to kayak in Gulf Shores because of the calm waters and you’ll typically see fewer people out here.

Love seeing marine life when you kayak? You’ll love kayaking with manatees in Florida .

The main Cotton Bayou Boat Launch is actually also part of Gulf State Park. The ramps and launch area is very nice but there is limited parking and you will get towed if you aren’t in a proper spot.

Truthfully, each of the launches along Cotton Bayou has limited parking so you may want to have back-up plans in case one or all locations are crowded.

Cotton Bayou Launch, Jubilee Point, and Boggy Point Boat Launch are the three main launches for this area. Look Rook Road is another option where you can get to Cotton Bayou or Terry Cove.

Tips for Kayaking in Gulf Shores

Here are a few tips for kayaking in Gulf Shores whether you’re going on a tour or setting out by yourself.

Sunscreen, Sunscreen, Sunscreen

When you’re out on the water, there is little to no shade so wearing sunscreen is the simplest way to ensure your skin stays healthy when visiting Gulf Shores.

It’s essential to always apply sunscreen even if you don’t feel as though it’s super hot outside – the sun can still be intensely punishing your skin from behind those clouds! You can get burned even in spring or fall too – summer isn’t the only season where sunscreen is important.

Apply at least 15 minutes before you go out into the sun, and reapply regularly throughout the day for the best protection.

I’m not always smart about this and I burn very easily. A bad sunburn can make the rest of your trip VERY uncomfortable.

Bring the Proper Gear

No matter if the outfitter says they will provide one or not, I always bring my own dry bag just in case. I put my sunscreen, phone, and keys in the bag and typically leave my wallet in my locked car. Some people prefer to take their wallet with them.

In addition to a dry bag, I bring sunglasses and sometimes a hat to keep the sun off my shoulders. You’ll also want to wear the proper kayaking shoes.

Leave No Trace

Leave No Trace is typically talked about when hiking or camping but it’s also an essential part of kayaking responsibly, whether it’s your first time or you’re a seasoned veteran.

Taking the time to be mindful of your impact on the environment during your journey will ensure that future paddlers can enjoy healthy rivers and streams.

This means not leaving garbage, respecting wildlife and their habitats, and leaving what we find in its proper environment. Following these guidelines will lead to a better experience for ourselves and others.

Pack Plenty of Water and Snacks

Water is the most important part here but you don’t want to be caught out on the water while you’re hangry. My go-to hiking snacks also make great snacks for my kayaking trips.

Pack double the water that you think you’ll need – especially during warmer weather. A reusable water bottle is great for this but if you use plastic water bottles then please just make sure to pack out your trash and try to recycle.

Once you’re done out on the water head to one of the great places to grab a beer in Gulf Shores.

It gets incredibly hot during the summer months so you’ll want to be out on the water either early in the morning or in the early evening. Avoid the middle of the day when the sun is harshest.

If you do have to be out in the middle of the day then wear a wide-brim hat, use lots of sunscreen, and again, pack LOTS of water.

Wrap Up: Gulf Shores Kayaking

Gulf Shores offers beautiful kayaking tours that are perfect for a day out with friends or family. With plenty of rental companies and locations to choose from, you’re sure to find the perfect spot to paddle and explore.

Make sure to apply sunscreen, bring water and snacks, and head out in the cooler parts of the day for the best experience.

Leave No Trace by picking up your trash and keeping our waterways clean – keep Alabama beautiful for everyone! Hope you have an amazing Gulf Shores kayaking adventure.

Wild Native Tours

Wild Native Tours is a company that really stays close to the land (and water)! Operating in both Gulf Shores and Mobile, they take folks out on close-up  Gulf Shores tours  of the waterways that give the south its unique environment. Their appreciation of the environment encourages their Leave No Trace policy—their goal is to educate people about the fabulous ecosystem, hoping their customers will fall in love with it as much as they have!

Beauty of the Bottlenose

This  Gulf Shores tour  is dedicated to getting close to dolphins—to watching them play and show off, and appreciating the seemingly effortless way they glide through the waters. During the  dolphin tour in Gulf Shores , you’ll learn about the ecology, diet, life cycles, and social habits of the bottlenose dolphin, helping you appreciate these creatures even more.

These playful and sometimes sneaky creatures are unpredictable, so the company cannot guarantee you’ll see them. Even so, the places you’ll visit offer the best chances you can get, and you’ll get to see plenty of gorgeous bird species on the way too!

Times and Prices

The  dolphin tours in Gulf Shores  are held year-round thanks to the mild  Gulf  climate. The Dolphins at Sunset tour lasts about 3 hours. Check the Wild Native Tours website to see departure times.

The tour costs $65 per adult and $50 per person under 18 years, with a 10% discount for retired or active military. The company also offers group prices for charter tours: six guests cost $325, and each guest beyond 6 costs an extra $50. Tickets must be purchased over the phone or online; tickets are not sold at the docks.

Wild Native’s Gulf Shores tours begin at a dock just north of Oyster Bay. It’s located off County Road 6, behind a building which formerly housed Happy Harbor Pizza and Subs.

To get to the meetup point, follow Highway 59 north. After the bridge over Portage Creek, take the first left, and then turn right when the road brings you to Oyster Bay Road. Follow it until a fork in the road, then go right to take County Road 6. In .2 miles, you should see the old restaurant on your left.

If you’re in the Dauphin Island area, this is a must do!! We had so much fun today learning to paddle board with Eva. She is a wonderful instructor who has a true passion for showing people how to connect with nature in universal ways! While we were all older, this is the perfect activity for people of all ages. We came down to Dauphin Island for my son and his girlfriends 21st birthdays and decided to give paddle boarding a try. Eva is such a great instructor and we all really appreciated how helpful and patient she was. You could really tell she loves what she does! We had a great time and will definitely go paddle boarding with Pure Aloha Adventures Alabama next time we visit the island.

We had the best time Paddle boarding on Dauphin Island today. Eva was such a great instructor and really helped everyone in our group feel comfortable in trying something new. Best Things to Do Gulf Shores Alabama

    1.   gulf shores beach.

The main attraction in Gulf Shores is definitely the beach, putting it at the top of the best things to do in Gulf Shores list. You can’t beat the beautiful white soft sugary sand and crystal-clear water that lines the coast.

The beach is so wide and inviting you’ll have plenty of space to spread out and enjoy yourself.

There’s plenty of room to throw a ball or frisbee around or set up your beach chair and cooler and take in the coastal vibe.

For those that love fishing from the shore you can do that too!

    2.   Rent a Kayak

Kayaking is just about the best way to experience the water and wildlife, that’s why it’s one of the best outdoor things to do in Gulf Shores.

The calm waters are perfect for anyone wanting to paddle through the water.

You can bring your own, rent one, or even join a beginner’s class to learn how it's done.

Popular places to kayak are Bon Secour River, Little Lagoon, and Lake Shelby.

    3.   Gulf State Park

The Gulf State Park has just about everything to love about an awesome state park, and that’s exactly why it’s one of the best outdoor things to do in Gulf Shores.

There’s so much to do from swimming to fishing to hiking, biking, or birdwatching.

To cool off, choose from several white sand beaches.

Go kayaking on Lake Shelby or fish off the pier. Hit the trails on foot or bike. You’ll find picnic tables at the beach pavilion for an easy mealtime without sand in your sandwich :)

If you’re traveling with an RV or doing van life then be sure to check out the Gulf State Park campground, with 496 full-hookup campsites in the park.

Plus, campground guests get access to the splash pad and outdoor swimming pool – it’s heated and open year round!

    4.   Go Parasailing

Flying high above the coast you’ll get your adrenaline pumping and have the best view of it all.

That’s why parasailing is one of the most fun things to do in Gulf Shores.

With warm weather all year round, you can enjoy getting up into the air no matter when you visit.

Since this is such a great thing to do, there are tons of companies in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach that will get you up into the air.

    5.   Gulf State Park Fishing Pier

If your idea of a perfect day involves throwing out a line, definitely check out the Fishing Pier at Gulf State Park.

Out on the pier you’ll have some of the best views of the coast.

So even if you’re not interested in fishing, you’re welcome to enjoy the pier too. Or just walk down the stairs to the beach!

Expect a fee to head out on the pier – one for anglers and another for sightseers. You can rent fishing equipment at the pier so there’s no need to bring your own.

Also there’s a restaurant (yes, they serve booze too!) and the pier is and excellent place to watch the sunset on the Alabama coast.

    6.   Oyster Farm Tours

If you’re headed to Gulf Shores get ready to eat the most incredible seafood.

Better yet, take a tour of an oyster farm to get an inside look at how they make the way from the water to your table.

It’s definitely one of the unique things to do in Gulf Shores.

Several oyster farms in the area give curious folks the amazing opportunity to see how it’s all done. You may even be able to shuck and slurp fresh oysters on the spot.

    7.   Watch the Sunset on the Beach

What’s better than ending an epic beach day than watching the sunset over the horizon? Not much.

But in Gulf Shores the sunsets produce the most amazing array of colors that light up the sky.

That’s why watching the sunset on the beach is one of the most enjoyable things to do in Gulf Shores.

There’s no better way to finish up your day than a beach walk with a gorgeous sunset.

    8.   Sand Castle University

Have you ever wanted to take your sandcastle building up a notch? If so, then the Sand Castle University is just for you.

Perfect for all ages, this awesome hands-on, group experience is the how-to on sandcastles.

Think you’re pretty good already? Then enroll in the higher level where you can get your castle to be bigger, bolder, and more intricate.

It’s definitely one of the best family fun things to do in Gulf Shores.

    9.   Dining with a View

When you’re in paradise, why leave?

Even if it’s time to eat, Gulf Shores has a number of places to enjoy a meal right on the beach giving you the best view of the water and a reason not to leave.

Check out the Pink Pony , Sea N Suds , or the Original Oyster House Boardwalk .

All three serve up incredible food and a view of the water that is to die for. Once there you’ll understand why dining with a view is totally one of the best things to do in Gulf Shores.

    10.   Take a Boat Tour

One of the best ways to explore Gulf Shores is on a boat tour.

A brilliant orange sunset over a calm ocean. In the foreground, people stand on the shore looking at the spectacle.

Often overlooked in favor of Tampa to the north and Miami to the south, Sarasota, on Florida’s Gulf Coast, is a laid-back city that seems content to keep its white-sand beaches out of the spotlight. The city of 55,000 has long been home to the Ringling museum complex , set on a picturesque bay, where visitors can find artworks by Peter Paul Rubens, Titian and El Greco, and a circus museum. There’s plenty for nature lovers, too: Spot alligators, manatees and dolphins; meander beneath stately banyan trees; and take a kayak for a spin through the wild mangroves. These days, the city is abuzz with developments, including an expansion of the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens and the opening of a 1920s house-museum in Newtown, the city’s historic Black district.

    Recommendations

    • Siesta Beach , the pride and joy of locals, offers miles of soft sand that’s great to lounge or stroll on, as well as expansive views of the Gulf.
    • The Ringling is a complex of museums and gardens where visitors can discover such delights as a 3,800-square-foot model of an early 20th-century circus.
    • Meliora captures the high-low spirit of Sarasota with unfussy decor and sophisticated seafood dishes.
    • Kayak tours from Kayaking SRQ and Liquid Blue Outfitters take visitors through mangroves and Sarasota Bay, providing the chance to spot dolphins, manatees, starfish, crabs and more.
    • At Myakka River State Park , a kayak rental will get you up close and personal with alligators.
    • Newtown Alive offers trolley tours that trace the struggles and successes of residents of Sarasota’s historic Black neighborhood.
    • Leonard Reid House is a new museum in Newtown that was once the home of one of the city’s first Black settlers.
    • Marie Selby Botanical Gardens has a new gallery with living specimens from the Gardens’ collection of 35,000 preserved plants, a conservatory with displays of flowering orchids and walkways shaded by banyans, ficus and mangroves.
    • Lakewood Ranch Farmers’ Market offers live music, food stands and various events for kids, like arts and crafts or storytelling.
    • Shack , a popular fitness studio, runs jam-packed yoga and pilates classes.
    • Phillippi Creek Oyster Bar is a seafood lover’s paradise, with peel-and-eat shrimp, lobster tails, calamari, oysters and, for those inclined, fried gator.
    • Project Coffee , a vegan cafe with several locations in Sarasota, has a menu that adds a little fun to brunch classics, like a frozen açaí bowl with cornflakes and black-sesame crumble.
    • Sage , a restaurant inside a historic 1926 building that once housed the Sarasota Times newspaper, has a swanky rooftop bar with live music on Fridays.
    • Siesta Key Oyster Bar has festive cocktails and live music nightly.
    • Gilligan’s Island Bar has a loungey backyard with swings; pop, disco and reggaeton tunes set a dancey vibe.
    • The Resort at Longboat Key , renovated in 2020, sits on 410 acres of land on a barrier island off Sarasota. Besides a private beach, the hotel has its own golf course, tennis gardens and a spa. Rooms start at $999 a night.
    • Kompose Hotel , near the airport, allows guests to book a room at a base price and pay for customizations, like use of the pool and jacuzzi ($5 per day), or the Peloton bike ($10 per hour); a sauna session ($35 per person); or accommodating a dog ($75 per stay). Rooms start at $250.
    • Timberline Glamping Co. offers luxury tents in Oscar Scherer State Park equipped with linens, rugs, lamps, electric outlets, heating or air-conditioning, mini fridges and Keurig coffee makers. The site provides hammocks, a charcoal grill, a wood fire pit and a picnic table. There’s a shared bathhouse with toilets and showers. Tents from $169.
    • For short-term rentals , look in the Alta Vista or Laurel Park neighborhoods for proximity to Sarasota’s downtown at reasonable prices. Rentals on Siesta Key, a barrier island connected to Sarasota by two bridges, are more expensive, but offer easy beach access, free trolley service and small town charm.
    • The best way to get around Sarasota is by car , whether it's a rental or via ride-hailing apps like Uber and Lyft. An on-demand ridesharing service called Breeze OnDemand runs in downtown Sarasota, on Siesta Key, on Longboat Key and on Lido Key, and costs $2 per person; book through the app . Free trolleys run along Siesta Key and Lido Key, and between Lido Key and downtown Sarasota. Track the Lido Key trolleys with the Bay Runner app . The Siesta Key Breeze trolley runs approximately every half hour.

Gulf State Park Cabins on Lake Shelby

    Discover Lake Shelby

In gulf shores & orange beach.

Located a short walk from the Gulf of Mexico and Alabama's white-sand beaches is the Gulf State Park's Lake Shelby .

This natural treasure has hosted families, fishermen and fun seekers for generations. Boy Scouts have camped around the lake, farmers markets have sold locally grown produce, and groups of all sizes and ages have enjoyed innumerable picnics under the trees. Lake Shelby is a beloved piece of the Alabama Gulf Coast landscape.

When you combine Lake Shelby with Little Lake and Middle Lake, there are nearly 900 acres of water inviting guests to swim, fish and boat or paddle. Lake Shelby is actually one of the closest freshwater lakes near saltwater on the Gulf of Mexico. But, that's only the beginning—so much history and interesting stories surround this piece of coastal paradise.

Kayak Fishers in Lake Shelby in Gulf State Park

    Fishing Lake Shelby

Even though Lake Shelby is a freshwater lake, because of its proximity to the Gulf, saltwater intrudes on the lake and makes it home to both freshwater and saltwater fish, including largemouth bass, bream, crappie, redfish and speckled trout. You'll even find blue crab in the lake. It's been rumored that bass weighing as much as five pounds have been caught in the lake! To fish the lake, you'll need a freshwater fishing license, which can be purchased at the bait shop on the Gulf State Park Pier .

    More Outdoor Adventures

Lake Shelby offers a scenic way to spend the day when you opt to paddle around the lake. Bring a fishing kayak and drop a line or rent a stand-up paddleboard or kayak onsite. Bike rentals are also available onsite at Lake Shelby. Make a day of it at the lake and bring along food to grill in the picnic area. Picnic tables and pavilion rentals are available daily from 8 am to sunset for up to 50 guests making it easy to relax while making memories with family and friends.

Take the Gulf State Park on two wheels and leave Lake Shelby on a Segway with Coastal Segway Adventures . This unique, guided experience takes you through the various ecosystems of the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail.

Dog fetching a stick at The Dog Pond at Lake Shelby

Bring your furry friends to the lakeside dog park,  The Dog Pond , where your dogs can splash, run, and play with other friendly fidos. All dogs must be up-to-date on vaccinations and remain on a leash when they are entering and leaving the Dog Pond. Bring your dog's favorite ball or toy and let them fetch to their heart's content.

    History of Lake Shelby

According to the Office of Archaeological Research at the University of Alabama Museums, some interesting finds have been noted about Lake Shelby's past. Director Matt Gage said the site around the lake represents a large shell midden (mound) where people congregated to share food and ideas and to trade items from all over the region during the Middle to Late Woodland time periods, as well as into the Mississippian period (AD 400-1100). Rangia shells (bivalve mollusks or clams) make up the majority of the food remains found in the shell midden; however, some terrestrial vertebrates common in estuarine environments were also found, including alligator, deer, birds and turtles. The residents who built the shell midden were part of a large and vibrant culture that spread across the Gulf Coast as well as inland across the Southeast.

Fast forward to the 1930s when the  Intracoastal Waterway  was completed, and we have modern-day trade, just not at Lake Shelby. Today, the lake serves as a place to join with friends and families, reel in the night's dinner, and make memories and traditions that'll last for generations!
