Travel Medicine

Our physicians will prepare you for travel and protect you from diseases through proper food handling, insect protection and immunizations.

Before you travel to another country, take precautions to stay healthy by learning the potential health risks you will encounter. Prepare yourself by learning how to prevent diseases through proper food handling, insect protection and immunizations with the help of physicians at IU Health.

Your immune system has developed to keep you safe in your normal environment. You probably remain immune to most colds, flus or other illnesses common in your area. However, the viruses and bacteria that cause these diseases differ around the world, leaving you susceptible to possible illnesses.

Depending on where you travel, you may also become exposed to dozens of illnesses not found in your native country, such as malaria, Chagas disease or African sleeping sickness. Vaccinations and immunizations have eradicated some diseases, such as polio, in parts of the world, but these diseases remain present in some countries. In addition, the conditions of different countries allow disease to spread more easily. Poor food handling or lack of water filtration could allow contamination. A high population of insects, such as mosquitoes, also allows disease to spread quickly from person to person.

What to Expect

You should make an appointment with an infectious diseases physician at IU Health at least eight weeks before you travel abroad in order to ensure you have time to get any immunizations you may need.

IU Health specialists prepare world travelers for their journeys by providing vaccinations and education on staying well. Through focused education and extensive training, your physicians have expertise in the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases around the globe. Your physicians stay up-to-date with the latest vaccine and travel health recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) so you receive all the vaccinations you need. From sanitizing water, to cooking safely, to preventing insect bites, your physicians will work with you to protect your health so you can travel safely.

IU Health Infectious Diseases physicians offer a range of services to prepare travelers:

  • Infectious diseases appointments. You should schedule an appointment with an infectious diseases physician eight weeks before you travel and bring your medical history, immunization records and trip itinerary with you. Your itinerary allows your physicians to make specific, personalized recommendations based on the countries you plan to visit.
  • Hepatitis A
  • Hepatitis B
  • HPV (Human Papillomavirus)
  • Japanese encephalitis
  • Meningococcal (meningitis)
  • Typhoid (oral and injectable)
  • Varicella (chicken pox and shingles)
  • Yellow fever
  • Education. Your physicians share their expertise and teach you how to prevent infections caused by a variety of sources. They provide specialized education depending on when and where you travel.

During and After Travel

During your visit, you can receive the suggested immunizations, prescriptions for medications to help prevent malaria and diarrhea, and documentation of all immunizations you receive. Your physicians continue to support you as you travel and are available by secure email to offer advice.

When you return from your travels, your physicians offer post-travel consultations. Their specialized training allows them to diagnose and treat uncommon diseases you might contract while travelling. Some of these conditions may rarely occur in the United States.

Excellent Little clinic and the only one I'm told in Northern Indiana north of Indy. The only reason it's for instead of five stars for me is the fact that they have very limited hours due to staffing. But I love the ease of use. The NP is so knowledgeable and friendly. And she really makes it easy!! I hope we always have passport health right here in Fort Wayne. Thank You

Photo of Sami A.

While the staff members were friendly and the service was quick, I would not recommend this place to anyone. Unless you are completely ironclad in your knowledge of what vaccines and medications you will need, this is not the place for you. I had done some research, and had an *idea* of what I needed, but was also seeking some guidance from what I thought would be a trusted medical professional. However, all they want is to saddle you with every option they can, with no questions asked about the purpose of your trip or the type of traveler you are, which can greatly affect what exactly is needed. I felt very taken advantage of, and was uncomfortable with the sales forward nature of the office. It is incredibly unethical to use fear as a sales method, which is exactly what they did to me. I certainly learned my lesson the hard way- to the tune of $300 spent on a medication I did not need. Try Walgreens or your general practitioner first.

Passport Health Inc is the place to go if you need last minute vaccinations for overseas travel. They are able to provide you with a variety of shots that most doctors offices won't have, including Yellow Fever and Typhoid, as well as your more standard shots as well. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. When you go in, they will sit down and take the time to discuss with you what shots you are required to get, as well as what are recommended. They will also provide a binder containing a wealth of information about the country or countries that you plan to visit, including safety information, i.e. what foods/things you should avoid, diease information, etc. The lobby and office has different travel related items to purchase, but you are never pressured to. Tips/Things to know: + You can either schedule your appointment online or via phone. + You will be required to fill out medical history and bring paperwork with you + They didn't deal with insurance, so you will need to file a claim yourself. + Depending on the vaccine and the number that you need, you can expect to spend some money, but good luck finding another place to get vaccines on such a short notice + The building is in the far back of the lot, if you aren't careful or paying attention, it is easy to drive past the entrance. + Remember to bring your yellow book for shot verification. If you don't have one, they should be able to provide you with one.

Went here twice. The second time, I needed pills which they sell. The nurse determined how many I needed, and out I went. Later they called me saying they had a boat payment due so I needed more pills (the nurse used a scientific map with my itinerary, the receptionist I'm imagining just went to the generic CDC website). Well, in that time I determined a regular pharmacy would be cheaper. So I asked for a prescription and a refund. They provided the refund as the med's hadn't shipped, but said they don't write prescriptions. I guess they fill prescription medicine without a prescription. Perhaps law enforcement should be notified, but I was disappointed they did not provide service as you would expect for paying an office visit fee.

Great experience for a novice traveler. I don't do much foreign travel, so the knowledge and experience of Passport Health was great.

Traveling to Egypt and needed shots. Called my doctor and they only did travel shots on Mondays, they reccomended Passport Health Indiana. Great service, showed up 8:45AM next morning, got my shots and off I go!

Photo of Don K.

Passport Health's nurses spent twenty minutes educating me about health issues to be aware of since I'm traveling to Peru. Much more than just getting a vaccination. I understand why my primary care physician recommended i go there to get a typhoid shot. Five star service!!!

Photo of Theresa L.

My doctor's office said they could not do my vaccines for my upcoming trip to South Africa and recommended Passport Health. I was able to schedule an appointment online (bonus points) for the following day, and someone called to confirm my appointment. The nurse (Angie) was extremely thorough in going through my itinerary and even checking some of the addresses online to see exactly where I would be and which vaccines would be necessary. Some of my travel companions went to a different travel clinic that was not as thorough and subsequently were not aware they would need malaria pills. So I really appreciate that Angie took the time to get all the information. On the negative side, they do try to sell you some things like bug spray, additional vaccines, travel insurance, etc. But since they weren't super pushy about it, it didn't bother me too much. One thing the nurse was pushy about was getting my prescriptions (malaria pills and a "just in case" antibiotic) filled at Walgreens. I told her that Walgreens doesn't accept my insurance and I wanted my prescriptions filled at CVS instead. She did agree to do so, but only after trying to change my mind. She kept telling me that Walgreens would be cheaper, even going online to show me the prices for each drug. And while Walgreens prices were indeed cheaper for someone paying out of pocket, in the end I saved a SIGNIFICANT chunk of change by using my insurance at CVS. The whole conversation was rather strange and made me wonder if Passport Health gets some sort of kickback from Walgreens. All that being said, I would probably use Passport Health again because it was quick and easy and the process seemed very thorough.

Photo of DeeAnn J.

I highly recommend Passport Health to anyone traveling to an exotic overseas location. Not only were they very thorough in explaining my vaccination needs, they provided me with valuable information about the countries I'm visiting. Also, they provide an informational packet designed for your specific trip. The nurses were knowledgeable, helpful, and very patient in answering all my questions. I will definitely return for my next trip!!

Travel Medicine Program

Global travel can expose children to illnesses rarely found in the United States. Preparation for international travel helps families and children avoid unexpected illnesses, infections and injuries.

The Travel Medicine Program at Riley at IU Health provides comprehensive health services before and after your trip, including preventive medicine, vaccinations, travel education and support for parents of internationally adopted children.

Our travel medicine specialists check your child's current health and provide information about preventing and avoiding disease based on what area of the globe you are visiting. If necessary, we prescribe medicines and administer vaccinations.

We also provide follow-up care once you return home from your travels. Our lab is capable of diagnosing many travel-related conditions such as malaria and parasitic and diarrheal infections. If you or your child has a suspected travel-related illness, we have the resources and expertise to manage your care.

We are here to help you prepare for a safe, healthy trip abroad. Our specialists have extensive training and experience in travel medicine, pre-travel counseling, immunizations and the care of children with travel-associated illnesses. We work with young travelers of all ages and the adults who are accompanying them on their trip.

Immunizations and medicines needed for travel differ for each country. We recommend scheduling an appointment with one of our travel medicine specialists at least one month before leaving on your trip. Prevention is the first step for safe travel.

Most travel illnesses are prevented by:

  • Education about avoiding exposure
  • Using preventive medicines
  • Receiving specialized vaccines

Most doctors and other healthcare professionals in the U.S. are unfamiliar with many travel-associated illnesses. Our travel medicine team stays current on the latest alerts and advisories from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) .
