Watch live as solar eclipse 2024 begins path across the us.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Follow along as the solar eclipse journeys across the United States — with the moon momentarily blocking the sun for over 180 million people living in its path, including some lucky upstate New Yorkers, who will take in the celestial extravaganza Monday afternoon.

The highly anticipated eclipse will travel from Mexico’s Pacific Coast up to the coast of Newfoundland, Canada, hitting 15 US states along the way.

A map showing the path of totality for a total solar eclipse Monday, April 8, 2024. The eclipse will cross North America, passing over Mexico, the United States, and Canada. The total solar eclipse will begin over the South Pacific Ocean. Weather permitting, the first location in continental North America that will experience totality is Mexicoâs Pacific coast at around 11:07 a.m. PDT.

While over 180 million people will be in the eclipse’s path, including some 32 million Americans living in the path of totality, clouds may prevent parts of the southern and central US from witnessing the natural phenomenon.

The eclipse will last for several hours surrounding almost four minutes of darkness in the zone of totality — a narrow band of about 100 miles that stretches from Mexico to Maine and beyond.

Everything to know about the 2024 solar eclipse

  • The solar eclipse will take place Monday, April 8, blocking the sun for over 180 million people in its path.
  • The eclipse will expand from Mexico’s Pacific Coast across North America , hitting 15 US states and pulling itself all the way to the coast of Newfoundland, Canada.
  • New Yorkers will experience the solar eclipse just after 2 p.m. Monday.
  • A huge explosion on the sun , known as a coronal mass ejection, is anticipated, according to experts. This happens when massive particles from the sun are hurled out into space, explains Ryan French of the National Solar Observatory in Boulder, Colorado.
  • To avoid serious injury to the eyes , it is necessary to view the event through proper eyewear like eclipse glasses , or a handheld solar viewer, during the partial eclipse phase before and after totality.
  • The next total solar eclipse will take place on Aug. 12, 2026, and totality will be visible to those in Greenland, Iceland, Spain, Russia and a small slice of Portugal.

Those looking to take in the eclipse are urged to view the event through proper, NASA-approved eyewear like eclipse glasses , or a handheld solar viewer, to avoid eye damage.

The eclipse will enter the US in Texas and travel through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also experience the total solar eclipse, NASA said.

The eclipse will exit continental North America on the Atlantic coast of Newfoundland, Canada, just after 3:30 p.m. EST.

It will be the  last time  a total solar eclipse passes over a large part of the U.S. until 2044.

Another total solar eclipse won’t be visible from New York again until 2079, when the zone of totality  will include  the five boroughs.

Watch the Total Solar Eclipse Live Online with Scientific American

Celebrate the April 8 total solar eclipse with these livestreams from NASA, the NSF, Scientific American, and more

This article is part of a special report on the total solar eclipse that will be visible from parts of the U.S., Mexico and Canada on April 8, 2024.

It’s the science event of the decade: a total solar eclipse will cross North America on April 8. Maybe you won’t be able to travel to an area in the path of totality . Maybe your view will be obscured by clouds . Never fear: if all else fails, you can watch the rare spectacle online, thanks to a handful of livestreams designed to share the eclipse with viewers around the globe.

First up, check out Scientific American ’s own livestreams. Throughout the weekend and the day of the eclipse, we’ll have a team live on the ground in Texas that will hang out with top-tier eclipse chasers and share the experience.

On supporting science journalism

If you're enjoying this article, consider supporting our award-winning journalism by subscribing . By purchasing a subscription you are helping to ensure the future of impactful stories about the discoveries and ideas shaping our world today.

Catch up with April 6's broadcast with our senior space and physics editor Clara Moskowitz and Kate Russo, a psychologist and author who has seen 13 total solar eclipses in the past 20 years. Russo will be answering questions about the eclipse from viewers in the livestream chats, so be sure to tune in!

Then on April 8, at 1:15 P.M. EDT, we’ll be back on Instagram and YouTube for the big day! Scientific American staffers will give you the on-the-ground experience of chasing totality, with close-ups of the sun and expert commentary.

We also hope to offer a view of the eclipse that you can’t catch from anywhere on the ground, even with a “perfect location” and clear skies: a team of researchers will be using two jets from NASA’s WB-57 High Altitude Research Program that were converted into high-flying telescopes to chase the eclipse for science .

When the team made its first eclipse flight during 2017’s coast-to-coast spectacle , the scientists produced high-resolution images of the sun’s outer atmosphere, or corona, in a wavelength of light in which it had never been captured before. By flying along the path of totality, the researchers also stretched their view of this total solar eclipse to about seven and a half minutes—despite the fact that no place on Earth experienced totality for longer than two minutes and 42 seconds.

This spring’s eclipse is even more promising because it will last up to four minutes and 28 seconds on the ground. In the jet-based observation effort, the researchers hope to stretch that to eight minutes aloft. And during their flight this eclipse, the planes will carry upgraded instruments. The jets will also be equipped with new experiments, including one used to study material leaving the sun, such as the blobs of plasma and magnetic field dubbed coronal mass ejections and the steady stream of charged particles known as the solar wind.

Our broadcast of views of the eclipse will have plenty of company. Check out these other options for watching the event on April 8—without needing to worry about protecting your eyes with eclipse glasses .

Keep in mind that the partial eclipse will begin over the Pacific Ocean at 12:27 P.M. EDT and will make landfall over Sinaloa, Mexico, about half an hour later. Totality will begin there at 2:07 P.M. EDT and will reach Texas 20 minutes later. It will end over the Canadian island of Newfoundland at 3:46 P.M. EDT. The partial eclipse will also end over Newfoundland at 4:48 P.M. EDT.

NASA is offering a handful of webcasts for the 2024 eclipse , including versions with English- and Spanish-language commentary and telescope feeds from across North America. The agency will also be presenting broadcast of three sounding rockets that will launch from Virginia during the eclipse to study how the atmosphere responds to the phenomenon.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) will also broadcast the eclipse, beginning at 1:55 P.M. EDT on April 8. During the event, NSF researchers will talk about the science of the sun and the agency’s Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope in Hawaii, which is the largest solar telescope on Earth.

Additional webcasts

Time and Date will livestream the total solar eclipse beginning at 12:30 P.M. EDT

Lowell Observatory in Arizona will broadcast the view from Waco, Tex .

The Exploratorium in California will livestream in both English and Spanish, with views from Junction, Tex., and Torreón, Mexico.

The McDonald Observatory in Texas will broadcast the eclipse from three locations across the state, including views from both telescopes and on-site cameras, beginning at 1 P.M. EDT.

Editor’s Note: Until April 8, this article will be periodically updated with additional content as it becomes available.

Middle East latest: Israel 'preparing for any eventuality' after Iranian missile strikes - as Tehran threatens 'larger response' if attacked

Israeli military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said aircraft are still patrolling the skies. Meanwhile, President Joe Biden said the US military helped Israel "take down nearly all of the drones and missiles" fired by Iran.

  • Explained: Everything we know so far about the attack
  • Sean Bell analysis:  This could have been much worse - the challenge is now Netanyahu's reaction
  • Live reporting by Brad Young and (earlier) Lauren Russell

Israel will respond to Iran's attack, but the decision-makers have not come to a conclusion on the type of response, an Israeli official has told CNN.

The official said Israel has not decided whether to "break all the dishes" or take a more measured action.

Israel's war cabinet are expected to discuss the options today, the official said.

Iran informed the US that its attacks against Israel would be "limited" and for self-defence, Iran's foreign minister Hossein Amirabdollahian says.

He added Iran notified its neighbours of the strikes 72 hours in advance.

"We informed our friends and neighbours in the region that Iran's response against Israel was certain, legitimate, and irrevocable," Mr Amirabdollahian said at a press conference.

Two senior Arab officials say they are worried Benjamin Netanyahu could use this moment to start a wider war with Iran.

"Conventional wisdom is they won't [retaliate], but the guy sitting in power may go insane," one official told our partner network, NBC News.

The official has direct knowledge of negotiations between Israel and Hamas over Gaza and Israeli hostages.

Asked if he expected Israel would respond, the other senior official from a different regional country said: "I wouldn't be surprised if they try to do more. Bibi wants to drag us there."

Video filmed by Iraqi media shows a large section of a missile it says was fired by Iran and fell in Iraq.

The footage was taken in the Soran district of the Irbil governorate in the semi-autonomous Kurdish region of Iraq.

Local villagers gathered by the fallen part near their houses.

Iran launched its first direct military attack against Israel on Saturday.

It was an ambitious attack and the Iranians will be disappointed by the low level of destruction, but "they ought to be happy that they got the symbolic base", says military analyst Professor Michael Clarke .

Many ballistic missiles were fired at Nevatim airbase, where Iran says planes took off to attack the Iranian consulate in Damascus on 1 April, he explained.

The IDF reported light damage at the base, but overall Israel had "a very good night", added Clarke.

Iranian tactics

Iran has learned from the Russians, launching lots different types of device - drones, cruise and ballistic missiles - to overwhelm or distract air defences, said Clarke.

Ballistic missiles were the weapon they would have wanted to make it through.

They attacked from multiple directions because defence systems can only cope with a certain arc of launches - though in Israel's case, its capability was improved by allies' assistance, he said.

Netanyahu wants the last word

"The Iranians can now say 'we've hit the target which hit us'. That would seem like a logical place to call a halt to this particular iteration. But Netanyahu has to have the last word," said Clarke.

The question is whether Israel attacks Iran or goes after Iranian Revolutionary Guards outside in nearby countries, he said.

"Everybody else will be saying to the Israelis, call it off, call a halt, let this be the end to this particular iteration, but it probably won't be."

The RAF shot down "a number" of Iranian attack drones, Rishi Sunak says.

He confirmed the UK sent "additional planes" to the region as part of operations already under way in Iraq and Syria.

"The fallout for regional stability would be hard to overstate" had Iran's attack on Israel been successful, he said.

"This was a dangerous and unnecessary escalation which I have condemned in the strongest terms.

"Thanks to an international co-ordinated effort, which the UK participated in, almost all of these missiles were intercepted, saving lives not just in Israel but in neighbouring countries like Jordan as well."

Earlier this morning, we reported how the UK had deployed additional jets and refuelling aircraft to an airbase in Cyprus, where the UK already has a deployment operating against Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

The jets were given permission to shoot down any Iranian missiles or drones as part of that mission, meaning where they were operating near Syrian and Iraqi airspace, rather than over Israel.

The jets were filling in for US planes that would otherwise have been taking part in the Iraq/Syria mission, so that American aircraft were freed up to focus on the Israeli mission.

Iran has no intention of continuing its "defensive operations", its foreign minister has said.

However, it will not hesitate to safeguard its interests against any new aggression, said Hossein Amirabdollahian.

"Exercising the right of legitimate defence shows Iran's responsible approach to regional and international peace and security," he said.

"At this point, the Islamic Republic of Iran has no intention of continuing defensive operations, but if necessary, it will not hesitate to protect its legitimate interests against any new aggression."

Pope Francis urged Iran and Israel to avoid any actions that could feed "a spiral of violence" that risked dragging the Middle East deeper into conflict.

"Enough war, enough attacks, enough violence. Yes to dialogue, yes to peace," he told pilgrims in St Peter's Square.

Several Iranian airports including Tehran's Imam Khomeini International have cancelled flights until Monday, Iranian state media reports.

Domestic flights from Tehran's Mehrabad Airport and airports in Shiraz, Isfahan, Bushehr, Kerman, Ilam, and Sanandaj have also been cancelled.

The country's western airspace remains off limits to flights.

Major airlines across the Middle East have announced the cancellation of some of their flights, while having to reroute others.

Lufthansa has suspended flights to Amman in Jordan, Beirut in Lebanon, Erbil in the Kurdistan region of Iraq, and Tel Aviv in Israel until Monday.

Austrian Airlines has suspended its flights to Tel Aviv, Erbil and Amman until tomorrow, with flights to Tehran suspended until 18 April.

"Long-haul routes through the Middle East will also be rerouted accordingly due to various airspace closures," it said.

Emirates Airlines announced the cancellation of some of its flights and the re-routing of others.

Iran's foreign ministry has summoned the British, French and German ambassadors, reports the Iranian Labour News Agency.

The ministry will question what it referred to as their "irresponsible stance" regarding Tehran's retaliatory strikes on Israel.

Israel said France was involved in patrolling its airspace last night, while the UK sent jets to Cyprus to free up US planes from a joint mission against Islamic State in Iraq and Syria so they could assist Israel.

Tornadoes hit Louisiana and Texas as severe weather causes damage in South

A tornado with 115-mph winds ripped off roofs and tore down power lines in Lake Charles, Louisiana, on Wednesday, and another twister damaged homes in Texas as severe weather struck the South.

No deaths or injuries were reported in the EF-2 tornadoes that hit Lake Charles and Port Arthur, Texas, on Wednesday morning, the National Weather Service said.

In Lake Charles, a city of 84,000 in the southwestern part of the state, the tornado traveled for about a mile beginning at 6:38 a.m., the weather service said . The roof of the Moss Memorial Health Complex was damaged, and other roofs were destroyed.

storm aftermath damage rubble destruction

In Port Arthur, another EF-2 tornado around 300 yards wide traveled more than 2 miles, damaging homes and ripping down trees, the weather servi c e said .

“It was pretty bad,” Michelle Viator, of Lake Charles, told NBC affiliate KPLC . “I mean, everything’s down.”

Viator’s home was damaged, and a family down her street who have two children were trapped by the damage to their home, Viator told the station in Lake Charles.

On Tuesday, heavy rain, hail and high winds hit Mississippi and other Southern states.

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves announced Wednesday that there had been one weather-related death in his state, in Scott County, and an injury in Grenada County.

“Please pray for them and their families during this difficult time,” Reeves said on X .

He said preliminary information was that 72 homes were damaged or destroyed in Grenada, Hinds, Marshall, Scott, Warren and Yazoo counties.

More than 4 inches of rain fell in Hinds County, Mississippi, and more than 5 inches fell in Holmes, Rankin and Sharkey counties, the weather service in Jackson said.

In New Orleans, streets flooded Wednesday. A flash flood emergency had been declared for the metro area, and the weather service there warned residents "DO NOT DRIVE right now!" New Orleans police showed images of inundated roads and urged people to avoid flooded areas.

St. Tammany Parish, on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain across from New Orleans, shared video of destruction, including downed trees and destroyed houses and buildings, amid heavy rain.

The National Weather Service said it found damage consistent with an EF-1 tornado in Slidell near Old Spanish Trail, but it said more storm surveys would be needed to determine the path, length and wind speeds.

An EF-1 tornado also struck the Houston suburb of Katy early Wednesday with 90 mph maximum winds, officials said. While the damage survey is still ongoing, it’s consistent with an EF-1 tornado, Jeff Evans of the National Weather Service Office in Houston/Galveston told reporters.

There were more than 90 storm reports Tuesday, including reports of hail as large as 4.25 inches in diameter across Texas.

Jasper, Texas, marked 7.58 inches of rain, and 7.38 inches were clocked in Marshall, Texas, along with 7.22 inches at Big Sunflower River in Holly Bluff, Mississippi, and 6.24 inches in Monroe, Louisiana. In Kirbyville, Texas, Pin Oak Creek rose 10 feet in less than six hours.

A disaster declaration was issued for Jasper County, Texas, which includes Kirbyville, on Wednesday. The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office said the city “remains under water” Wednesday morning and rescue teams have extricated “several” people out of vehicles and homes.

By Wednesday evening, high wind advisories covered much of the South. In Birmingham, Alabama, forecasters said there could be 45 mph wind gusts, and the advisory there lasted until 7 a.m. Thursday.

Tornado watches covered an area of the Florida Panhandle and southwestern Georgia at 6:45 p.m. ET.

Around 136,000 customers across Louisiana remained without power Wednesday evening, according to the tracking website poweroutage.us .

Severe risk continues Thursday for the Ohio Valley, the Southeast and northern Florida. Thursday’s risks are lower than Wednesday’s, but all hazards will be possible for Jacksonville, Tallahassee, Tampa and other cities in Florida for the southern risk area and for Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio, and Pittsburgh across the northern risk area.
