The Neverending Field Trip

Different Types of Field Trips for Learning about our World

Who doesn’t love a great field trip? The opportunity to step outside of life’s normal routines and experience something completely new is always a good time and a great way to learn things you might not have known!

There are tons of different possibilities for field trips, whether you’re traveling far from home or just exploring the woods behind the house, but sometimes it can be hard to see all the opportunities for learning that surround you. That’s why knowing what types of field trips there are can be super helpful for figuring out what sort of educational opportunity you want! This is my list of the different types of field trip opportunities that exist.

I typically divide field trips into two main groups: Nature-focused Trips and People-Focused Trips .

Different Kinds of Nature-Focused Field Trips

field trip.com

My first major category contains any field trip that is specifically focused on nature. That’s a lot . Whether we’re talking about trips aimed at teaching kids about plants or animals, exploring underground caverns, or learning about the night sky, it’s all about nature!

Learning about the natural world is a huge draw for kids and adults alike, and there is so much out there to choose from. To help narrow it down a bit, I’ve tried to further divide natural trips into smaller groupings.

Astronomical Field Trips

Astronomical field trips are all about space! There’s nothing quite like the unexplored reaches of the universe for sparking excitement and curiosity in the minds of kids. And new discoveries are being made all the time!

Some of my favorite astronomical field trips have been stargazing in the Atacama desert and watching a rocket launch in Florida, but it could be as simple as taking the kids outside of town to identify constellations!

Astronomical Field Trip Ideas

  • Stargazing (in your back yard or somewhere special!)
  • Trip to an observatory
  • Watching a rocket launch
  • Watching an eclipse
  • Space Museum Trip

Botanical field trips.

Botanical Field Trips are all about exploring the wonderful world of plants. Exploring how cactus survive in the desert, marveling at the diversity of wildflower in the spring, or taking the time to look at the leaves in the fall are all botanical trips.

Some of my favorite trips have been to botanical gardens around the world where we get the chance to see unique plants growing in their natural environments.

Botanical Field Trip Ideas

  • Visiting a botanical garden
  • Plant identification trip (works pretty much anywhere!)
  • Foraging Trip
  • Trip to an Arboretum

Geological field trips.

Geological trips are all about the earth and what makes up the ground we walk on. It’s about a lot more than just looking at some rocks. Getting to see the building blocks of our planet and how they fit together can be an amazing experience, and can take you to some incredible places. Let’s just say that geology rocks. (Hi, I’m a dad.)

There are plenty of amazing options for learning about the earth, but some of my favorites are caving trips, checking out the Grand Canyon, and hiking active volcanoes!

Geological Field Trip Ideas

  • Going caving

Zoological field trips.

Zoological trips can include so much more than zoos, but they  are  a great place to start. Any trip that’s focused on the fauna of an area is a zoological field trip, whether that’s exotic animals in the zoo or the squirrels at the local park. Animals can be great for kindling a kid’s curiosity, and because of how interconnected the natural world is, they can be a great launching point for any number of exciting lessons!

My family checks out zoos and aquariums pretty much any chance we get, but my favorite trips have all been in the wild. If you get the chance to go reef snorkeling, definitely take it.

Zoological Field Trip Ideas

  • Animal Spotting/Bird watching trips
  • Visiting an Animal Conservation Center ( Grizzly and Wolf Conservation Center, Yellowstone )
  • Visiting an animal Rescue Center ( Proyecto Asis, Costa Rica )

Other ecological field trips.

I use the term “ecological field trips” as my catch-all for other nature-focused field trips. Really, any trip that gets you out into nature can be a great launching pad for learning. It’s just about getting into nature and seeing what you can discover! There’s no better way of helping your kid to appreciate the natural world than simply getting them outside to spend time in nature.

Some of my favorite ecological field trips are nature hikes, waterfalls, and dispersed camping.

Ecological Field Trip Ideas

  • Going camping ( Camping with Kids )
  • Visiting a National Park ( My favorite is Badlands )

Different kinds of people-focused field trips.

My daughter standing barefoot with the Great Pyramid of Giza in the background.

The other broad field trip category is field trips about Humanity . It’s all about the things that people do, and the ways that we do them. Whether it’s looking at the things we’ve built, the foods we eat, or the jobs we have, if it’s about humans it’s a people-focused field trip.

Let’s break it down a bit more.

Agricultural Field Trips

Agricultural field trips are trips that are focused on the farm. Farm trips are great options for teaching kids all about the life cycles of plants, the types and effects of weather, where our food comes from, and more!

Some of my favorite agricultural trips include fruit picking, petting zoos, and bee farms!

Agricultural Field Trip Ideas

  • Visiting a Bee Farm
  • Pick your own produce trips ( Picking Strawberries in Cameron Highlands, Malaysia )
  • Visiting a coffee or tea plantation ( Finca Filadelfia, Guatemala )

Architectural field trips.

Architectural field trips are all about looking at the things that humans build. I typically only consider more modern buildings to fall into this specific category. Basically, if you’re looking at a building that is still actively being used today, it’s an architectural field trip. If it was built in the far past, or if it’s a set of ruins, it goes in the next one.

My favorite architectural field trip is probably Frank Lloyd Wright’s Waterfall house. I was taken there when I was in high school, and to this day I think about that trip any time I see a three-legged stool. Other great trips include going to famous buildings like the Space Needle, or checking out colonial-style houses from the 1700s.

Archaeological field trips.

Archaeological field trips are trips out to see the buildings and artifacts of humanity’s past. It’s all about seeing the way the world was, and learning about humans got through life before our modern advances took hold. It’s about seeing where we’re from, and how far we’ve come.

Ancient ruins, cave dwellings, and the Wonders of the World all fall into this category and are among some of my favorite field trips.

Historical field trips.

Historical field trips are  also  about learning from humanity’s past, but I feel like they’re a bit different from archaeological trips. In essence, historical trips are less focused on the buildings and artifacts of the past, and more focused on the actions and events. They’re about remembering the past, the choices that we made as a civilization, both good and bad. It’s sort of splitting hairs, at times, and in the end, I’m not sure the distinction matters, but it’s there.

Some of my favorite historical field trips are historical reenactments and demonstrations, like at Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown. Other good trips include visiting monuments and memorials, the USS Arizona, or the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. These places make history more palpable and can anchor historical learning in a kid’s mind.

Historical Field Trip Ideas

  • Explore the local history of your town
  • Visit the site of a historical location or Reenactment (Colonial Williamsburg, VA)
  • Learn about major historical events in your own country’s past ( Crazy Horse, SD )
  • Learn about human history at a UNESCO Cultural Heritage Site ( UNESCO Cultural Sites )

Gastronomical field trips.

I know I say that a lot of these categories are among my favorites, but this time I mean it! Gastronomical field trips are all about food. The food we make and eat as a culture has a lot to say about us. It both depends on and dictates our agricultural practices and our economy. If you want to learn about a culture, you should learn about its food , and that includes your own home culture! A nice culinary field trip pairs very well with an agricultural trips, so if you can find a farm that has its own restaurant, be sure to stick around for seconds.

Some of my favorite culinary field trips have included cooking lessons, cultural restaurants, and local farm tours, but really any new meal you eat offers an opportunity to learn something new.

Gastronomical Field Trip Ideas

  • Learn how to cook a favorite meal
  • Visit a farm and make, or eat, a meal made from what they grow ( Caoba Farms, Guatemala )
  • Explore street food options in a different country ( Street Food and Culture )
  • Learn about how a favorite snack gets from farm to table ( Chocolate Field Guide )

Other cultural field trips.

People-focused field trips cover a wide array of experiences. Any trip that doesn’t easily fall into one of the other categories gets labeled as a “Cultural Field Trip.” These are the trips that are about the different ways that people do things today. They’re about exploring the way that the world around us works, and they can be considered trips into the “real world.” Trips to the bank to find out how banking works may not sound like the most exciting trip, but it’s a field trip that can help foster an understanding of cultural systems that can have a huge impact on our future.

Some great cultural field trips could include a trip to learn about using looms to hand-weave a rug, to a local factory to see how they make things, or to a cultural festival to learn about how other people do things!

Honestly, these trips can be almost anything, so long as there’s a focus on learning.

Cultural Field Trip Ideas

  • Visit a local capitol building ( Madison, WI )
  • Watch a live musical or opera
  • Explore musical instruments from other cultures (Nose flute, anyone?)
  • Take a factory tour, or visit a US Mint

Museum trips.

field trip.com

I wanted to give a special note on museum trips.

Museums are often a blast to visit, and they can be super educational. I love museums, and I definitely suggest visiting them often. But, they don’t really fit with my personal definition of “field trip.”

Museums typically bring a lot of materials for education together for people to enjoy, but they remove the context needed to allow kids to make cross-discipline connections. They pull things out of the “real world” and put them in a box.

Which is fine, really. I don’t think poorly of museums in any way, I just think that they go great  with  field trips, but maybe not  instead  of field trips.

And, there are often exceptions to that rule.

One of my favorite museum experiences was chatting with a paleontologist who works in the Perot museum! We watched real-world paleontology getting done by a real scientist , right where she actually worked! That’s pretty much the definition of a field trip!

Finding Egypt’s hidden desert whales in beautiful Wadi al-Hitan

Finding Egypt’s hidden desert whales in beautiful Wadi al-Hitan

Truly, there is an astonishing variety of possible field trips that can be done, and every one of them can be an educational experience worth having. I’ve offered up a lot of different “types” of field trips, but remember that the real world often doesn’t fit itself in neat little categories. So long as you are open to teaching and learning in whatever opportunity presents itself, any field trip you take will be a success.

So in the words of my favorite field tripper,

“Take chances, make mistakes, and  get messy !”

From about 2009 we used a locally hosted Bugzilla server as “issue tracker” to maintain and distribute to-do lists and supports the follow-up communication between developers and users. Since about 2016 we moved on to GitHub for project management and issue tracking. We would occasionally still look up some old Bugzilla discussion regarding features, code design choices and bugs.

However, due to resource limitations and security concerns we decided to discontinue the Bugzilla server. As of now, https://bugzilla.fieldtriptoolbox.org contains a read-only archived copy of the bug reports and discussions. All links from the website and from the email archive to bugs on Bugzilla should still work, so the details of past work are not lost.

One hundred years ago Hans Berger undertook the first ever recording of electrical activity from a human brain. The discovery of a “brain script”, offered to revolutionise our understanding of mind and brain…

As we celebrate a century of this ground-breaking moment for the neurosciences, the EEG100 consortium invites you to submit creative visual images that provide a homage to the legacy of Berger’s discovery and/or present a glimpse into the future possibilities EEG holds. The winning visual will be used by the EEG100 consortium throughout 2024 as part of the centenary year celebrations. The work will for example be included in a scientific commentary article and presented at various conferences (with full acknowledgment).

This competition is open to everyone – whether you’re a hobbyist, a professional artist/designer, or simply a neuroscientist with a creative side. We have no specific demands on visual style or content; we’re looking for originality and creativity – surprise us! We do however ask that you avoid designs like a brain with ‘100’ superimposed on it. Ideally the work would adapt well to various formats, from print to digital display, but we welcome all forms of submissions (image, film, animation etc)! Please be aware that by submitting your design, you agree to release the image to the public domain under a CC license of your choice.

The winner will be determined by vote within the EEG100 consortium based on originality, relevance, and overall visual impact of the submissions. The winning creator will be awarded a $500 USD gift voucher.

You may submit any common file format (like .jpg, .png, .pdf for images or .mp4 for video) but if your design is chosen, we will ask you to supply your artwork in a production ready format. Please email your submission to [email protected] with the subject title “#EEG100 Image Competition” by the end of 29th February 2024 (on the last time zone on earth!).

You will receive a confirmation email upon successful submission.

Decisions will be announced by the end of March 2024.

We are coming up to the 100-year anniversary of the discovery of human EEG.

In celebration of this seminal moment for human neuroscience, we are asking the FieldTrip, the EEG, and the neuroscience community at large, to document the impact this discovery has had on our understanding of the brain and to share thoughts on the short, medium, and long-term future of human non-invasive scalp EEG through this online survey. Importantly, this survey will also help in defining our collective perspectives on future research priorities.

I hope you will be able to spare the 10-15 minutes it will take to complete the survey and make your views heard about the past and future of EEG.

Thank you for your time.

Just over two years from now, the United States will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and one group is already preparing for it.

America250 is launching “ America’s Field Trip ,” a nationwide scholastic contest for elementary, middle, and high school students to submit artwork, videos, and essays reflecting on “What America means to them.” The contest requires individual submissions and parental permission, and is open until May 17, 2024. Funding is provided by The Bank of New York Mellon Foundation.

“BNY Mellon was founded by Alexander Hamilton just a few years after the birth of America, and we are proud of our firm’s heritage of advancing America’s industries and communities over the century,” said Jayee Koffey, Global Head of Enterprise Execution and Chief Corporate Affairs Officer for BNY Mellon. “It’s fitting that we participate in telling the country’s story of growth and resilience through America’s Field Trip and inspiring the next generation to continue the nation’s long history of innovation.”

Seventy-five first-place winners will receive free travel, lodging, and field trip experiences to one location of their choice. Second-place winners will receive $500 cash awards. The initial field trip experiences and partners include a costumed revolutionary era roleplaying experience at American Village. The village, located on 188 acres in Montevallo, is an educational institution that seeks to strengthen American liberty and constitutional self-government, with a special emphasis on youth programs, according to its website. It is a living museum with classrooms, a stage and theater.

Other trips will include:

  • Tour of the Statue of Liberty in New York
  • Tour and hike at Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming and Montana
  • Weekend at Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado
  • Unique tours at the National Archives and the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.
  • Special tours at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, National Museum of African American History and Culture, or the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C.
  • Explore America’s iconic financial capital, New York City, with private tours of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York Museum and Learning Center and The Bank of New York Mellon, the country’s oldest bank.
  • Tour of the USS Constitution Museum in Boston
  • Candlelight tour at Fort Point at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge

The contest is open to students in grades 3-12 in the United States, has no entry fee, and must be submitted by a parent or teacher. The first prize winner must travel with their parents.

America250 is led by the United States Semiquincentennial Commission, which aims to be the largest and most inclusive commemoration in American history. Alabama’s own Robert Aderholt, a US Representative, is on the leadership team for America250. Also on the team is Mobile native and current Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin.

“America’s Field Trip is one of the most ambitious education engagement campaigns ever attempted because it’s more than a contest it’s an extraordinary opportunity to bring students across the country together in celebrating and commemorating our nation’s 250th anniversary by exploring our past and allowing them to express their dreams for the future,” said America250 Chair, Rosie Rios. “We’re proud to launch this nationwide effort alongside BNY Mellon, whose support will make it possible to send students on experiences of a lifetime. As we forge ahead toward our nation’s 250th anniversary on July 4, 2026, this historic milestone is just as much about the future as it is our past and America’s Field Trip will help empower young people to stand at the heart of this endeavor.”

How a class field trip turned into a blessing for a Topsail High student's family

T opsail High School student Jillian Lombardo was sitting on her couch reading with her younger brother when her older brother Will came through the front door and announced that his truck was on fire.

From that moment, Lombardo said her safety instincts kicked in with the help of a lesson she learned through her public safety class.

"I grabbed the fire extinguisher right under the kitchen counter, ran outside," Lombardo said. "My mom was like 'Go Jill, Go!'"

She said the fire was growing when she got to her brother's truck outside, but she was able to put it out quickly with the steps she remembered.

Pender County Fire Marshal Amy Burton said that when Pender EMS and Fire arrived, there was nothing left to do because Lombardo had put out the fire on her own.

Lomardo said she remembered a field trip she took with public safety teacher Burke Bailey's class to the local fire department, where students took turns putting out an oil fire.

When it was Lombardo's turn, she said, the fire extinguisher had run out, so she had to quickly grab a new one, pull the pin out, and put the fire out.

Lombardo said the hands-on learning experience made her remember the steps to take in the real-life situation.

After the lesson, she went home and told her father about the field trip and he sat the family down to make sure everyone knew where the fire extinguishers were.

Lombardo said the fire happened about a month after the field trip.

Public safety teacher Burke Bailey has been at Topsail High School since October 2023, but he previously worked in law enforcement for 13 years and was an American Heart Association CPR instructor.

Bailey said he is fortunate that the school has a relationship with Pender County Fire and EMS. He said his class also teaches students other emergency life-saving skills such as CPR, tourniquet application, fire extinguisher use as well as what to do if pulled over by a police officer.

"We never get to decide the moment we must be prepared to act," Bailey said.

Bailey said Lombardo is a great example of why students need to learn practical life skills.

"It could've turned out a lot different had they not acted quickly," Burton said. "I'm super proud of Jillian for what she stepped up and did."

Flashy labels don't always translate to quality products. In fact, celebrities have proven time and again that you can look classy even when dressed down in casual sneakers. Just look to celebrities like fashion designer Whitney Port, model Nina Agdal, and actor Ashton Kutcher, whose sneakers of choice are the Cariuma Oca Low Top Shoes .

These canvas sneakers are the ultimate spring shoes, from their bold color range to their lightweight, breathable cloth uppers. Despite their Hollywood following, the shoes are relatively affordable and ready to be added into your warm-weather rotation.

Cariuma Oca Low Green Canvas Shoes

Cariuma’s Oca Low Canvas style stands out with its super-comfy bio-memory foam insoles that are made with eco-friendly mamona oil and cork. At Cariuma, sustainability is key; all materials are organic, vegan, and ethically sourced, from the raw rubber outsoles to the organic cotton canvas to the recycled plastic liners, laces, threads, and labels.

But, it's also their versatility that makes them shine. Ashton Kutcher has worn a no-fuss, all-black pair from Cariuma for TV appearances, while Nina Agdal and Helen Mirren have sported the bright green hue — a beautiful shade inspired by the lush landscapes of Rio de Janeiro as an ode to nature in the Brazilian brand’s tropical backyard — with casual athleisure and even dresses in Cannes. While green may seem like a bold choice, these sneakers are surprisingly versatile and can easily pair with jeans, shorts, or skirts to create the same level of stylishness in an everyday or travel wardrobe.

Cariuma Oca Low White Canvas Shoes

More than 16,000 shoppers have given the Oca Low Canvas sneakers a five-star rating on Cariuma’s website. Countless customers wrote in their reviews that the shoes are now their favorite sneakers. According to one fan of the brand, they're the “most comfortable pair of Cariumas yet.”

Chiming in, a second shopper wrote, “I can’t stop buying these in every color. They’re always comfortable and look so cute." Vouching for their ability to be dressed up or down, they continued, "I wear them with jeans, dresses, and shorts. I always bring a pair on my travels. I will continue to buy these in as many colors as I can.” And, a final reviewer added, "These shoes are so comfortable. I can walk in them for hours."

Beau Bridges Says He’s Planning a Surprise Trip for Wife on Their 40th Wedding Anniversary: ‘She’s My Rock’

"I have a little surprise for her," Bridges said of his wife Wendy, whom he married on April 10, 1984

Beau Bridges is planning to celebrate his 40th wedding anniversary in a special way.

On Tuesday, the actor, 82, appeared on Live with Kelly and Mark and told the hosts that he’s planning to treat his wife Wendy to a getaway to mark the milestone.

“I’m kind of the travel agent of the family. I like preparing things, and so I have a little surprise for her, where I’m taking her,” Bridges said. “But she’s my rock. 40 years!”

Bridges and Wendy tied the knot on April 10, 1984. The couple share three children together: Sons Dylan and Ezekiel, 30, and daughter Emily. Bridges, who is the brother of actor Jeff Bridges , is also dad to sons Casey and Jordan, 50, from his first marriage to Julie Landfield.

In February 2023, Bridges marked 44 years with Wendy with a sweet post on Instagram. Alongside a photo of the pair at the 79th Venice International Film Festival in 2022, Bridges wrote, “44 years with my girl.”

Weeks later, the couple also celebrated becoming grandparents for the sixth time . “Our 6th grandchild. Welcome to the world baby boy Mack!” Bridges captioned the post, which showed Wendy cradling their grandson as she and her husband planted a kiss on his head.

Bridges also opened about his brood during his appearance on Live with Kelly and Mark , telling Mark Consuelos that all five of his kids are in show business in “one form or another.”

Beau Bridges/Instagram

“My oldest Casey is a documentary filmmaker. Coaches soccer on the side. My son Jordan is an actor, he was Frankie Rizolli in Rozzoli & Isles . And then my son Dylan is on the other side, he’s the vice president of social media at Universal. So he’s got a couple of big movies right now he’s working on,” said Bridges.

He continued of his daughter Emily, “She and I wrote a play together about 10 years ago that was recently made into a movie, Acting: The First Six Lessons . And she directed me in that as well. And then my son Zeke is an actor, and he’s in a film that’s coming out pretty quick here.”

Consuelos, 52, and his co-host and wife Kelly Ripa then played a clip of Ezekiel appearing on Live when he was just 6 years old, before airing a scene from Bridges' new movie, The Neon Highway , which also stars his youngest son.

Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

Bridges plays a fading country music legend called Claude Allen in the drama, which opens in theaters on March 15, while Ezekiel is an electrician’s assistant.

“I’m forgotten and kind of a lost soul,” Bridges said of his character. “And then this young man who is also a singer — I don’t know it at the time; he’s an electrician just paying the bills — and he comes to my house with his assistant Bob to my house to fix my phone, and that’s how I meet up with him. And then he sees this beautiful guitar of mine and they realize who I am, this old legend. And we get together and go to Nashville to chase our dreams. And his assistant, Bob, is portrayed by Ezekiel, that little guy who came on your show.”

“Good old 6-year-old Zeke. Is that him?” asked Ripa, 53.

“Yeah, he’s 30 now,” responded Bridges. “And one of the fun things about the scene that we did is, being a good dad is probably one of the most challenging things I’ve ever tried to do in my life — [Mark] will tell you the same thing. I’ve failed many times and my kids, five of them, they all see my feet of clay. So in this movie, my son was forced to gawk at me with great respect. And I kind of dug that.”
