First Impressions: Pratt Institute (NY)

pratt college visit

Ever take a college visit where your observations exceeded your expectations? That happened to me when I visited Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. At first I thought: “It’s in Brooklyn, probably a few buildings, but no campus.” I could not have been more wrong.

There are only two schools in New York with a true residential campus: Columbia University (including Barnard College) and Pratt Institute.  I think Pratt has the nicer campus and surrounding area, including the restaurants and retail along Myrtle Avenue right near the campus. While I walked by some pricy (by college student budgets) dining options, Pratt’s surrounding  neighborhood felt more collegial than Columbia’s.

The Pratt Institute campus dates back to 1887. But buildings that were used in the past for one purpose—engineering labs as one example—have been adapted to be used for another. The campus grounds are quite well maintained with green space and various sculptures. Aside from a high-rise apartment complex, this campus could have been host to a pure liberal arts college.   Pratt has a modern student center and administration building, but the academic buildings and the library are among the best examples of historic presentation that I have seen on a college campus. If you have an opportunity to tour this campus, pay close attention to your brief visit to the library.  With the help of your guide, you will notice many interesting architectural details. I found a few to share on a Pratt Institute Pinterest page.

Pratt Institute was founded mainly as an engineering school, but decided to end engineering instruction in 1993 . Aside from a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Creative Writing, all of Pratt’s majors are focused around Art History and Criticism, Architecture, Construction Management, Visual Arts and Design. Pratt Institute lists an impressive number of high rankings as a premier art and design school, the most relevant coming through DesignIntelligence, a monthly architecture and design journal .

It’s getting harder to get into Pratt. This is one of the few art and design schools that requires the ACT or the SAT as well as a portfolio for all potential majors (excluding Construction Management). For those who want to enter the workforce earlier, Pratt offers Associates degrees in Art and Design as well as Construction Management. These do not require standardized test scores. Prospective Architecture and Construction Management majors are expected to score over 600 on the Math sections of the standardized tests. Pratt accepted less than a third of the applicants it received for the last cycle. Their average high school GPA was a 3.5; the average SAT score 1280.

Pratt does not require prospective students to commit to a major when they apply, unless they are interested in Fashion Design, which has its own foundations courses for the first two years. The last two years can be devoted to an emphasis within a major, such as the Transportation Design within the Industrial Design major or an Advertising Art Direction within Communication Design. The four foundations courses , two over a semester, two over a year, help guide students to their decision.

It’s relatively easy to find internships for credit after sophomore year. There are 1, 2 and 3 credit internship options that vary in terms of hours and academic obligations, or you can take a paid position without seeking credits. There are Business Practices courses within the majors to help students to understand business basics and think entrepreneurially as well as computer ethics courses, especially relevant for digital art.

Unlike most colleges, the majority of Pratt faculty are adjuncts practicing their art. They also become an important part of a student’s network for internships and jobs. Nearly 26,000 of the Pratt alumni registered in LinkedIn.com are based in or around New York City, a huge group close to campus. As a result over 90 percent of Pratt graduates are working in their major, or a related field within a few months after they graduate.

Over half of Pratt’s 3,300 full-time undergraduates, including more than 90 percent of the freshmen, live on campus in apartments or residence halls. The rest commute or live close by in Brooklyn. The Institute reports that 80 percent of undergraduates are on campus during the weekends. That’s amazing, considering what you can find when you venture off campus.

Pratt is accessible to virtually any major entertainment or recreational opportunity in the borough, including the Barclays Center, home to the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets. There is more for college students to do in Brooklyn than they could find time to do over four years. It’s relatively easy to get to mid-town Manhattan, where Pratt has another campus, as long as you remember to change trains when you take the ‘A’ or the ‘C’ subway. I did the trip from Penn Station in about a half hour. But I was also lucky. I timed the connection just right, and it was just a walk across the platform to change trains.

The Pratt Institute experience is quite expensive, with an estimated cost of attendance over $70,000 . But the institute awards merit and need based scholarships to 75 percent of entering freshmen, including international students. Awards are based on a point system that considers grades, test scores and the portfolio. Forty percent of the freshmen who arrived in 2017 received merit awards, but these averaged less than half of tuition and fees. A Pratt applicant who can be admitted to the Fashion Institute of Technology for a similar major will likely pay less to go there. So would an architecture student who can get into Cooper Union or City College of New York. Pratt gets shopped against these schools as well as the fine arts schools at other US and foreign universities.

Private art and design schools like Pratt have their own cultures, programs and teaching styles. Its wise to visit the schools that have the programs that you might like, and maybe take advantage of a high school summer program to see which one is right for you. These schools are quite expensive. Families have every right to consider the possible return on the experience.

I really like Pratt Institute as a school. Prospective students might, too, if they want the urban setting and they can cover the costs.

Choosing Your Major

During your application process, you’ll be asked to choose a major. You can learn about all of the programs we have at Pratt on our website and from the  work  our students are doing. Keep in mind, you’ll also have the opportunity to take classes in other majors and explore your artistic interests in almost any major you choose.

While you may apply as “undecided” if you’re applying to the Schools of Art and Design, we advise against it. You cannot pursue architecture, construction management, writing, digital arts, or critical and visual studies if you apply undecided. Though we do our best to accommodate, we also can’t guarantee that you’ll be able to select your first-choice major in the second year if you’ve applied undecided.

Check Your Application Status

After you’ve applied, you can check the status of your application anytime. Just log into the link below using your email address and the password you used when you applied. It’s important to note that it can take up to three weeks from the date we receive your materials for your checklist to update, so your status may have some delay.

College tour season is about to kick off. Here are 10 tips from college tour guides to have a successful campus visit.

  • As spring starts, colleges nationwide will welcome parents and students to tour their campuses.
  • College tour guides want people to arrive on time, ask the right questions, and have fun.
  • They also recommend students take the tours on their own, without their parents.

Insider Today

Spring break is right around the corner, and for many high-school students and their parents, that means many will be hitting the road to tour colleges around the country.

To make the most of your visit, Business Insider spoke with college students and tour guides. They know the campuses like the backs of their hands, and they know how to walk backward.

Here are the dos and don'ts of college tours from student guides .

1. Get there with no time to spare, but don't be late.

You won't get points for arriving early, so try to arrive on time. But if you do happen to arrive late , there's no need to worry.

"If something comes up and you are late, ask your guide what you missed once the tour finishes," Skyler Kawecki-Muonio, a senior at Sarah Lawrence College in New York, told BI. "They will happily fill you in."

2. Dress to impress, but don't sacrifice comfort.

It's important to look nice, but you don't have to don a jacket and tie. Tour-goers should put their best foot forward with a sturdy pair of walking shoes , and don't forget to dress for the weather.

"At Fairleigh Dickinson, tours go out rain or shine, so make sure to wear clothes that will keep you warm," Emily Bone, a junior at Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey, said .

3. Don't forget to sign in, but skip the résumé .

Most schools have a check-in desk where you'll receive a campus map and other literature. But don't bother furnishing schools with your portfolio.

"Students can leave their résumés at home," Henry Millar, a senior at the College of William & Mary in Virginia, said. "Tour guides generally do not have any sway in the admissions process whatsoever, so feel free to save the paper."

4. Pay attention on the tour, but do it solo if possible.

Some schools offer to let parents and kids take separate tours, which has advantages.

"Get excited about your child's potential future in college, but give them some space to see what they think of that school on their own," Nathan Weisbrod, a junior at Wesleyan University in Connecticut, told BI.

Related stories

Students can comfortably ask questions without a parent present and compare notes afterward .

5. Ask all your questions, but avoid personal interrogations.

This is the time to inquire about any aspect of campus life , and don't feel shy about speaking up.

"Tour guides love getting questions because it allows us to cater the tour, especially in small groups, toward the needs and interests of the families on that specific tour," Halle Spataro, a senior at Bucknell University, said.

But some topics are off-limits, so don't ask your tour guide about their SAT scores , ACT scores , or what they wrote about in their essay .

6. Speak up, but let the student take the lead.

Parents may be tempted to raise their hands again and again, but this tour is about the student, so there should be space to let them shine.

"Try to take the back seat — or the passenger seat — but refrain from driving all of your child's interactions," Julian Jacklin, a junior at Reed College in Oregon, said. "Students who feel they can own that experience usually ask the most questions and engage with the tour more."

7. Say thanks, but don't leave with questions unanswered.

Maybe your guide didn't hear you, or your kid was reluctant to speak up. You can still get the information you want before leaving.

"There's a lot of information students are getting that day and a lot of excitement with being in a new place, which can make people forget to ask certain questions," Lorenzo Mars, a junior at Pepperdine University in California, said.

Therefore, get your tour guide's email address so that you can follow up .

8. You may know exactly what school is right but keep an open mind.

Don't be surprised if a city-living kid is suddenly intrigued by a small-town setting.

"The college search and college experience are all about getting to know yourself better and growing, so on a tour, students have to trust themselves and their judgment of the 'world' they've just stepped into," Thomas Elias, a senior at the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania, said .

9. Take in as much as possible, but remember to have fun.

Sure, preparing for the next four years can be scary and stressful. But it's also an exciting milestone, so enjoy the ride.

"These tours serve as great opportunities to learn more about colleges — along with their cities, culture, and people," Connor Gee, a sophomore at the University of Mississippi, said. "Have fun with it!"

10. Weigh the pros and cons of the school, but don't stop there.

Your tour may be over, but you can still learn other ways to immerse yourself in college life .

Washington adds two new visitors to may schedule including an smu commit, share this article.

Three-star safety Elijah Pratt announced his plans to take an official visit to Seattle to explore what coach Jedd Fisch and the Washington Huskies have to offer on Wednesday.

The former product of Timberview High School in Mansfield, Texas, transferred to powerhouse IMG Academy in Florida for his senior season, but is currently committed to return to Texas and play for SMU. Ranked as the nation’s No. 37 safety according to 247 Sports, he’s set to visit Seattle on May 31, when the coaching staff will be hosting a lot of its other top targets .

Safeties coach Vinnie Sunseri extended a scholarship offer to Pratt on February 23 and it took less than a month for him to set up a visit with the Huskies. Pratt holds 13 offers, including Auburn, Penn State, and Texas Tech and will join three other defensive backs on his trip to Seattle: five-star cornerback Dijon Lee , four-star cornerback Adonyss Currie , and three-star safety Rylon Dillard-Allen .

Pratt wasn’t the only prospect to announce his intentions to take an official visit, as three-star offensive lineman Peter Langi also scheduled his trip to Seattle for May 3.

The 6-foot-5, 330-pound prospect from Archbishop Riordan High School in San Francisco is ranked as the No. 38 interior offensive lineman in the nation by 247 Sports and is one of the most coveted recruits, holding 39 scholarship offers.

Alabama , Florida , LSU , Oklahoma , and Texas are among the schools vying for his services and he has also announced his intentions to visit Arizona State on May 31. Langi is the third offensive line prospect to schedule a trip with offensive coordinator Brennan Carroll, following four-star Darius Afalava and three-star John Mills .

The coaching staff appears to be attempting to build a strong secondary and offensive line in the class of 2025 and both Pratt and Langi could emerge as big targets for the Huskies in the coming months.

This award recognizes distinguished leadership, service, teaching, innovation, and other exemplary accomplishments that positively impact society and the engineering profession.

This year’s Distinguished Alumni Award honorees are:

Emerging leaders in the early stages of their careers, recipients of the Outstanding Young Alumni Award are generally no more than 10 years out from receiving their UMass Amherst engineering doctoral degree or no more than 15 years out from receiving their UMass Amherst engineering undergraduate degree. This award recognizes outstanding professional and personal achievements and highlights the recipient’s ambitions and potential to positively impact UMass Amherst, the Commonwealth, the nation and the world.

This year’s Outstanding Young Alumni Award honorees are:

Several recipients of this year’s awards remained in Massachusetts after graduating and have established themselves as engineering leaders within the Commonwealth: Kraus is the chief executive officer of Syner-G BioPharma Group, a leading provider of integrated pharmaceutical sciences and regulatory services based in Framingham; Lavallee is the deputy administrator and chief engineer at MassDOT Highway; Kaiser is a senior process engineer at 6K Inc., a materials manufacturing startup located in North Andover; Taghizadeh is the president of the Cambridge-based Kendall Innovations, a consultation firm that supports innovation in regenerative medicine, longevity and tissue engineering; and Watson serves as head of the Homeland Protection and Air Traffic Control Division at MIT Lincoln Laboratory.

In addition, several of this year’s recipients maintain close ties to the College of Engineering. Rivera sits on the Industry Advisory Board for the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, while Fontana serves on the UMass Amherst Offshore Wind Industry Advisory Board. Fontana and Lavallee have both recently visited campus for presentations and alumni panels to share their perspective with current students.

The OAA recipients will be celebrated during an invitation-only event in the Campus Center on Friday, April 19. To learn more about their accomplishments, visit the  College of Engineering website .
