We had an amazing time, thank you so much for your help. Everything went perfectly Jean-Paul and Merehani from Tahiti Nui travel were fantastic, they made it a very special day for us. We were very impressed. A completely stress free day for us. It was just so much fun, just how we wanted it. The photographer was really good. It was a beautiful day, blue skies and sunshine. Apparently we’re the first New Zealanders to be officially married in Moorea. It was the best destination, we just loved Moorea it’s beautiful. Definitely will recommend to friends. Would love to go back some day. The Hilton was amazing, location and facilities really good. Thanks again couldn’t have done it without your help. Thanks
I must say….That Tahiti Nui Travel certainly took great care of me !!!! Everything they did for me……was most definitely…..”TOP NOTCH” !!!! I believe I mentioned how the Heiva seats were excellent as well !!! …..Plus, the Friday night buffet dinner…..didn’t end until probably 10.00pm……So, I was thrilled, when the waitress spoke to the buffet manager, and he took it upon himself to contact Tahiti Nui Travel to ask them to delay picking me up to take me to the airport a half hour, so that I could watch most of the Coco Hotahota’s group performance !!! How extraordinarily thoughtful, attentive, and professional !!! A perfect way to end my South Pacific journey !!!
If you work half way around the globe with a time difference of 11 hours you need to make sure that your partner on the other side is spot on, professional and efficient. We are very proud that Tahiti Nui Travel represents us in French Polynesia. The effort we put into our itineraries is continued by Tahiti Nui Travel with the service and friendliness to our clients. Thank you for taking such good care and helping us with such a good service ….!!!!
I would like to thank you for the great assistance to our Group. The Group is very happy with their stay in French Polynesia and with the services that it had from Tahiti Nui Travel. The TC has commented to us that the wedding was perfect and surely one of the greatest moments in the trip. Thank you again and I hope we can strengthen our partnership. Best wishes, Daniel
Thank you again for all your professionalism, we look forward to working with you again!! Valerie

Pacific Travel Partners Reveals New 'Vantage' Name, Reassures Past Customers

suitcases at airport

Photo: Shutterstock.com

Pacific Travel Partners, which earlier this month purchased assets from Vantage Travel, has revealed the new company built on those assets will be Vantage Explorations.

"Vantage Explorations will be the name of the new brand, and the intention is to formally announce this, as well as our plans, in the coming months," a spokesperson for the company said. "Whilst there is an ongoing process following the finalization of the brand acquisition, a new 'Vantage style' offering will be introduced across oceangoing, river, and land product that will deliver exceptional travel experiences for our passengers."

Customers of the now bankrupt Vantage Travel had expressed concern that the expedition products offered by Aurora Expeditions (the parent company of Pacific Travel Partners) were too active and exceeded their physical capabilities, making their credits earned from canceled Vantage Travel trips unuseable.

"A team of customer service has been established to begin communication with customer creditors, and we hope that they will consider our offering in the spirit that it is intended."

Costa Rica is a country whose reputation precedes it: After all, with a motto and way of life like pura vida , or “pure life,” it’s impossible not to arrive expecting a little slice of heaven. The good news? It’s pretty impossible not to have your expectations met or exceeded. This Central American paradise has everything from surfer-friendly beaches and wildlife-filled national parks to excellent restaurants and plenty of adventure sports . And while the country is home to some of the most incredible resorts in the region, there’s a special magic to getting away from the crowds and renting your own villa, cabin, or tree house.

Here, instead of being surrounded by fellow travelers at the lobby bar or pool, you can tune in fully to what makes the country so special: watching migrating whales from your balcony, taking in the birdsong of the cloud forest over your morning coffee, swimming in the country’s rivers, riding its ocean waves, or hiking on its trails to find hidden waterfalls. Best of all, these 10 Costa Rica Airbnbs offer an experience that’s far from roughing it, with many including perks like saunas, clawfoot tubs, infinity pools, and even massage or private chef services.

A towering mango tree dominates the backyard at this midcentury-inspired villa.

Modern house overlooking the Pacific

 • Location: Sámara
 • Book now: airbnb.com

Located on the Nicoya Peninsula near teeming coral reefs and sea turtle nesting sites, this two-bedroom house draws on midcentury modernist influences, with plenty of teak and concrete, bold orange accent furnishings, and floor-to-ceiling glass doors that look out over the bay and the islands beyond. External spaces are centered around an enormous mango tree that droops with fruit in season and shades an infinity pool and stylish outdoor seating area. From the deck, you’ll often be serenaded by cicadas and tropical birds and decidedly less melodic—but no less cool!—howler monkeys. Consider them a unique alarm you don’t have to remember to set.

The floor-to-ceiling windows of this villa are designed to offer the best views.

Rammed-earth design villa on a jungle hillside

 • Location: Uvita

Czech design studio Formafatal created this pair of strikingly modern one-bedroom villas—the earth-toned Nefrit and its airier sister property, Jaspis —on a hillside about 1,000 feet above the famed surf beach Playa Hermosa. The architects collected clay on-site to make these sustainable rammed-earth structures, which look like a sun-drenched take on brutalism. Frameless, floor-to-ceiling glass walls and a private infinity pool allow for incredible views of migrating whales by day and bioluminescent waves by night. Note that the road up to the property is quite steep, so you’ll need a 4x4 to reach the top, where monkeys and parrots are likely to greet you.

There's no better place to take breakfast than out among the trees.

Cottage in the cloud forest

 • Location: Monteverde

Monteverde is one of the country’s major ecotourism hubs, especially for those hoping to immerse themselves in the cloud forest. If you want to get up close and personal with the wildlife-filled ecosystem, check out this timber-framed tree house, which is filled with perks like a vintage clawfoot bathtub, a catamaran net for sprawling out on the terrace, and a desk next to a window looking out into the forest. It’s a place for unplugging (if you want to, but the internet is fast and fiber optic if you need it!) and venturing out on hiking trails, though if you do find yourself needing a bit more action, the two-bedroom cottage is a five-minute walk to the Hotel Belmar, which is home to a farm-to-table restaurant, a cocktail bar, a craft brewery, and a yoga studio.

You'll want to spend all day in bed looking at the jungle view out your wraparound window-but the kitchen is pretty nice, too.

Unique peaceful cabin in the sky

 • Location: Los Mesen

Built into a verdant hillside, this sleek one-bedroom design cabin is more Nordic than neotropical, with plenty of midcentury-inspired furnishings and a custom tub and shower with glass walls with a view over the treetops. Next to the bed is an expansive wraparound window, and when you pull down the shades at night, they can be used as a smart TV projector. (A second full-size bed is hidden inside the platform of the first bed.) The house is tucked away on four acres of rainforest, which you’ll share with toucans, hummingbirds, and butterflies, and there’s a small, boulder-lined pool just steps away fed by underground spring water. Slightly farther afield, about 20 minutes by car, sits the Bajos del Toro, a series of waterfalls and mineral-rich swimming holes in the highlands.

The enormous round window in this whimsical house looks out to the lush, plant-surrounded pool.

Architectural adobe cottage with pool

 • Location: Puerto Viejo de Talamanca

Hidden away on the country’s less-touristed Caribbean coastline, this whimsical one-bedroom adobe cottage is located about a half mile from the shore and close to the popular Jaguar Rescue Center, featured on Zac Efron’s Netflix docuseries Down to Earth . Looking a bit like a cross between a terra-cotta pot and a Buddha statue, this eccentric hideaway is all organic curves, with oversize porthole-style windows, prismlike skylights, and a thatch-roofed observation deck with Adirondack chairs and a hammock. You’ll love the tiled pool, which is so surrounded by lush vegetation that it’s practically like some lost jungle spring.

This "tropical chic" villa is just a quick stroll from a fantastic surf beach.

Luxury villa near a popular surf beach

 • Location: Tamarindo

The Pacific Coast beach town of Tamarindo is beloved for its consistent surf breaks, and this new-build, two-bedroom villa is within walking distance of the sand, located in an exclusive gated community not far from the buzz of downtown. The owners have created what they call a “tropical chic” design style, complete with oversize palm patterns on the walls and a thatch-roofed patio overlooking the pool. The house includes daily housekeeping services (except for Sunday and public holidays), and you can also book a private chef, massage therapist, or yoga instructor.

No matter which way you look, the views are stunning.

Five-bedroom villa with panoramic ocean view

 • Location: Santa Teresa

Many villas designed for large groups end up leaving someone feeling unsatisfied (who gets the kids’ room or has to take the top bunk?), but not so with the Setai Luxury Villa: There are five “royal suites,” each with king beds and their own private bathrooms. Located just outside the laid-back surf village of Santa Teresa, the villa includes a garden with a BBQ grill and outdoor kitchen, perfect for prepping alfresco meals. The best seats in the house might be the partially underwater loungers in the infinity pool, which allow you to cool off as you enjoy those dazzling Pacific sunsets.

There's a smart TV, but your time is much better spent watching the Chirripó River.

Retreat with river access and organic garden

 • Location: Rivas

There’s a river running through this idyllic two-bedroom property, which takes its name (Kubla Khan) from Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s poem about the summer palace of Xanadu; much like that Edenic inspiration, this is a place where you can get lost in nature, by taking in views of the virgin cloud forest and the San Isidro Valley, relaxing by the pool or in the bio-sauna, or even picking organic fruits and vegetables from the garden. Active travelers will appreciate the “jungle gym,” which includes an exercise bike, yoga mat, foam roller, free weights, and bench press, or you can borrow mountain bikes to explore the surroundings. Out there, you might stumble upon waterfalls, swimming holes, and rocks for sunbathing, and after working up a sweat, you can book massages at the property.

The kitchen is a stylish gathering space in this minimalist design home.

Villa with pool and workspace great for digital nomads

 • Location: Ojochal

Fifteen minutes outside of the town of Ojochal in Puntarenas province, this three-bedroom villa sleeps eight and was designed to have jungle and ocean views from every room—yes, even the bathrooms. As such, there’s tons of light streaming in, which brightens up an already bright interior of crisp whites and warm wood tones. The outdoor living space has a BBQ grill, a picnic table, and a cushioned sectional, plus a lovely infinity pool. Digital nomads, take note: The Starlink internet is lightning fast, and there’s a dedicated work area with two monitors and a wireless keyboard and mouse. Nearby, you’ll have access to beaches perfect for swimming, surfing, and boogie-boarding, plus zip lines, deep-sea fishing charters, waterfalls, and whitewater rafting.

This mountain house leans into its tropical surroundings and the nation's famed flora and fauna at every turn.

Tropical mountain house with pool

 • Location: Turrialba

Many of the stylish villas in this country hide their tropical setting with overly minimalist interiors that would be just as at home in Palm Springs or Paris. Not so at this exuberant three-bedroom house, which wears its Costa Rican heritage proudly: Expect brightly colored floral pillows atop beds, dishware with colorful folk patterns, birds-of-paradise shower curtains, and a dining room with a wall-sized mural of sloths, toucans, jaguars, and plant life. The backyard has a half basketball court, a fire pit with free wood, and an above-ground pool, and there’s access to hiking trails, not to mention a private waterfall just a quick stroll from the house.

Buried treasure: The splendor of the Moscow Metro system

Owen hatherley the calvert journal january 29, 2013.

. Reposted from The Calvert Journal , a daily briefing on the culture and creativity of modern Russia.

. Post-Communist underground stations in Moscow, like the recently completed Pyatnitskoye shosse, are still, very visibly, Moscow Metro stations. Regardless of the need or otherwise for nuclear shelters, they’re still buried deep in the ground; ubiquitous still is the expensive, laborious, but highly legible and architecturally breathtaking practice of providing high-ceilinged vaults with the trains leaving from either side. There have been attempts at “normal” metro lines, like the sober stations built under Khrushchev, or the “Light Metro” finished in 2003, but they didn’t catch on. Largely, the model developed in the mid-1930s continues, and not just in Moscow — extensions in Kiev or St Petersburg, or altogether new systems in Kazan or Almaty, carry on this peculiar tradition. Metro stations are still being treated as palaces of the people, over two decades after the “people’s” states collapsed. This could be a question of maintaining quality control, but then quality is not conspicuous in the Russian built environment. So why does this endure?

pacific travel house team

. The original, 1930s Moscow Metro was the place where even the most skeptical fellow travellers threw away their doubts and surrendered. Bertolt Brecht wrote an awe-filled poem on the subject, “The Moscow Workers Take Possession of the Great Metro on April 27, 1935,” dropping his habitual irony and dialectic to describe the Metro workers perusing the system they’d built on the day of its opening. At the end, the poet gasps, his guard down, “This is the grand picture that once upon a time/ rocked the writers who foresaw it” — that is, that here, at least, a dream of “Communism” had been palpably built. It was not an uncommon reaction, then or now, nostalgia notwithstanding. The first stations, those Brecht was talking about, were not particularly over-ornamented, especially by the standards of what came later, but their extreme opulence and spaciousness was still overwhelming. Stations like Sokolniki or Kropotkinskaya didn’t bludgeon with classical reminisces and mosaics. Yet three things about the underground designs created by architects Alexei Dushkin, Ivan Fomin, Dmitry Chechulin et al were unprecedented in any previous public transport network, whether Charles Holden’s London, Alfred Grenander’s Berlin or Hector Guimard’s Paris. First, the huge size of the halls, their high ceilings and widely-spaced columns; second, the quality of the materials, with various coloured marbles shipped in from all over the USSR; and third, the lighting, emerging from individually-designed, surreal chandeliers, often murkily atmospheric, designed to create mood rather than light.

With lightning telegrams:

House Republicans release aid bills for Israel and Ukraine, eyeing weekend House votes

Mike Johnson speaks to reporters

WASHINGTON — Facing a divided party and pressure to act, House Speaker Mike Johnson rolled out three bills Wednesday to provide assistance to Israel , Ukraine and Taiwan , with the hope of holding final votes on Saturday.

The bills represent a major test of Johnson’s ability to navigate a thicket of political and global challenges with a wafer-thin majority. And it comes as Johnson, R-La., faces a serious threat to his gavel from Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene , R-Ga., and Thomas Massie , R-Ky.

Johnson's biggest challenge is Ukraine funding , an issue that has bitterly divided the GOP. He has been squeezed by conservative security hawks who want to help Ukraine fend off Russia’s aggression and by an empowered isolationist wing that is feeding off former President Donald Trump’s criticism of NATO and prior Ukraine aid measures.

Multiple Republicans say they oppose any funding for Ukraine, meaning that a significant share of Democrats will be required to carry that measure over the finish line. Many of the provisions in the bills resemble the package passed by the Senate in one bundle, which Johnson rejected and refused to put to a House vote.

In a message to members before releasing the legislation, Johnson said there would be "three bills that will fund America’s national security interests and allies in Israel, the Indo-Pacific, and Ukraine, including a loan structure for aid , and enhanced strategy and accountability."

He said Republican leadership will come forward with an amendment process "alongside a fourth bill that includes the REPO Act ," which is aimed at seizing Russian assets to benefit Ukraine; the House-passed bill to ban TikTok in the U.S. unless it divests from its China-based owner; as well as "sanctions and other measures to confront Russia, China, and Iran."

“We expect the vote on final passage on these bills to be on Saturday evening,” Johnson said in a text message obtained by NBC News.

He said there will also be a "border security bill that includes the core components of H.R.2" — a conservative, House-passed immigration bill — moving under a separate process. That measure serves as a sweetener for reticent conservatives who are unhappy that the aid bills don't include domestic immigration provisions.

Swift conservative pushback

Multiple House conservatives pushed back immediately on social media Wednesday after Johnson's message went out, complaining that the border measures weren't directly tied to Ukraine funding.

"The Republican Speaker of the House is seeking a rule to pass almost $100 billion in foreign aid — while unquestionably, dangerous criminals, terrorists, & fentanyl pour across our border. The border 'vote' in this package is a watered-down dangerous cover vote. I will oppose," Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, wrote on X .

Rep. Scott Perry, R-Pa., the most recent chair of the hard-right Freedom Caucus, said: "Anything less than tying Ukraine aid to real border security fails to live up to @SpeakerJohnson's own words just several weeks ago. Our constituents demand — and deserve — more from us."

Rep. Troy Nehls, R-Texas, earlier called aid to Ukraine unnecessary, saying: “I’m not giving them a nickel today, tomorrow or next week."

“Putin is not going into Poland. I don’t care what you say. Besides, anyway, it doesn’t really matter because ... when Donald Trump wins, Putin’s leavin’. Putin’s leavin’ Ukraine,” Nehls said ahead of the bill’s release, without explaining his logic.

House Democrats have repeatedly called on Johnson to bring up a Senate-passed foreign aid package instead, calling it the best — if not only — path to getting a bill on Biden's desk. They have posted a "discharge petition" with 195 signatories to end-run Johnson and force a vote on that bill. It needs 218 votes to come up, meaning it will need the backing of some Republicans in addition to Democrats.

At a Wednesday meeting with Democrats, House Minority Whip Katherine Clark, D-Mass., told members that they need to use their “personal relationships” with Republicans to garner support for the discharge petition, according to two people familiar with her comments.

Treasury Secretary Yellen dials up pressure

At a bilateral meeting later Wednesday with Ukraine Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen plans to dial up the pressure on House Republicans to act.

“The failure of House Republicans to act to support Ukraine in this pivotal moment of the war for so long has been inexcusable—and detrimental to our national security,” Yellen will say, according to a Treasury source. “Every moment of delay by House Republicans strengthens Putin and emboldens America’s adversaries around the world who are closely watching to see if we, the United States, maintains its resolve to support a democratic Ukraine as it fends off an autocratic Russia.”

Meanwhile, Greene has not said when she might force a vote on her "motion to vacate" the speaker's chair, which would take a simple majority to remove Johnson from his job. Her effort gained a cosponsor in Massie on Tuesday, who predicted Johnson would be voted out.

It's not clear the votes are there to oust Johnson. Many conservatives, including some who voted to remove former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, have not joined the effort to oust Johnson. Some Democrats have also said they'll vote to protect Johnson from a motion to depose him.

But Massie said that would only hurt his standing with the GOP in the long term.

“Then he goes further in the hole with Republicans. He becomes toxic to the conference. For every Democrat who comes to his aid he’ll lose 2 to 3 more Republicans,” Massie said. “He doesn’t have much shelf life after that.”

Johnson struck a defiant tone Tuesday when asked about the threat to his gavel, calling it “absurd” while saying he’s “not concerned” about the motion and will continue to do his job.

Biden says US support for Philippines, Japan defense ‘ironclad’ amid growing China provocations

President Joe Biden says the U.S. defense commitment is “ironclad” as he gathers Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida at the White House in the midst of growing concern over provocative Chinese military action.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden said Thursday that U.S. defense commitment to Pacific allies was “ironclad” as he gathered Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida at the White House in the midst of growing concern about provocative Chinese military action in the Indo-Pacific.

The U.S. and the Philippines have had a mutual treaty in place for more than 70 years. Biden’s forceful reinforcement of the American commitment comes in the midst of persistent skirmishes between the Philippine and Chinese coast guards in the disputed South China Sea.

“The United States defense commitments to Japan and to the Philippines are ironclad. They’re ironclad,” Biden said as he began three-way talks at the White House with Kishida and Marcos. “As I said before, any attack on Philippine aircraft, vessels or armed forces in the South China Sea would invoke our mutual defense treaty.”

Relations between China and the Philippines have been repeatedly tested by confrontations involving the two nations’ coast guard vessels in the disputed South China Sea. Chinese coast guard ships also regularly approach disputed Japanese-controlled East China Sea islands near Taiwan .

The so-called “gray-zone” harassment by China has included shining military-grade lasers at the Philippine Coast Guard, firing water cannons at vessels and ramming into Philippine ships near the Second Thomas Shoal, which both Manila and Beijing claim. In 1999, Manila intentionally ran a World War II–era ship aground on the shoal, establishing a permanent military presence there.

Biden, in a wide-ranging phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping last week, raised concerns about China’s operations in the South China Sea , including efforts to impede the Philippines from resupplying its forces on the Second Thomas Shoal.

Chinese officials have bristled at criticism over their action in the South China Sea and blamed the U.S. for exacerbating tensions.

“No one should violate China’s territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests, and China remains steadfast in safeguarding our lawful rights,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said Thursday.

The White House billed the first-ever trilateral summit with Japan and the Philippines as a potent response to China’s attempts at “intimidation” and said it would send a message that China is “the outlier in the neighborhood,” according to an administration official. The White House said in a statement that Biden and Marcos during the talks “underscored their commitment to international law in the South China Sea” and reaffirmed their countries’ treaty obligations to defend each other.

The leaders also announced joint patrols in the Indo-Pacific this year, a follow-up on law enforcement drills carried out last year by the allies in waters near the South China Sea. The U.S. Coast Guard will welcome Philippine and Japanese coast guard members onto a U.S. Coast Guard vessel during the patrol for training, according to White House.

The summit followed Biden’s one-on-one talks and glitzy state dinner Wednesday at the White House for the Japanese premier, a diplomatic honor meant to recognize Tokyo’s growing clout on the global stage. White House officials said they were aiming to send a clear signal that the Democratic administration remains determined to build what it calls a “latticework” of alliances in the Indo-Pacific even as it grapples with the Israel-Hamas war and Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine. Biden also hosted Marcos for a private meeting at the White House ahead of the three-way talks.

“Today’s summit is an opportunity to define the future that we want, and how we intend to achieve it together,” Marcos said.

Biden also announced that the three nations were launching a a new economic corridor in the Philippines as part of the G7 Partnership for Global Infrastructure Investment that would help develop clean energy, port, agriculture and other projects in the country. Biden said the leaders were forging a “new era” and predicted “a great deal of history in our world will be written in the Indo-Pacific in the coming years.”

The United States, the United Kingdom and Japan on Wednesday announced joint military exercises in the Indo-Pacific in 2025. That followed the Pentagon revealing earlier this week that the U.S., the U.K. and Australia were considering including Japan in the AUKUS partnership, a grouping launched in 2021 that aims to equip Australia with nuclear-powered and conventionally armed submarines.

Kishida visited Capitol Hill on Thursday for an address to U.S. lawmakers that focused on the need to strengthen the partnership between the U.S. and Japan at a time of tension in the Asia-Pacific and skepticism in Congress about U.S. involvement abroad. He offered concern about “the undercurrent of self-doubt among some Americans about what your role in the world should be.”

Biden has made improving relations with the Philippines a priority since Marcos became the country’s president in June 2022. The relationship has had ups and downs over the years and was in a difficult place when Marcos took office. Human rights groups said Marcos’ predecessor Rodrigo Duterte’s “war on drugs” resulted in thousands of extrajudicial killings.

Marcos, the son and namesake of the country’s former dictator, said as a candidate he would look to pursue closer ties with China. But he has increasingly drifted toward Washington amid concerns about China’s coercive action.

Biden hosted him for talks at the White House last year, the first Washington visit by a Philippine president in more than a decade. Biden also met him on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly soon after Marcos took office, and dispatched Vice President Kamala Harris to Manila in 2022 to meet him.

Last year, the Philippines agreed to give the U.S. access to four more bases on the islands .
