Best things to do on  Sir Bani Yas Island

safari yas island

Arabian Wildlife Park

Spot herds of rare oryx, groups of gazelles and stalking cheetah hiding among the dunes at the Arabian Wildlife Park. The island’s star attraction, this huge nature park is home to some of the rarest wildlife in the Arabian Gulf, as well as free-roaming creatures from elsewhere in the world, including giraffe and ostrich. Explore the park on horseback or mountain bike at your own pace or join an official game tour for a guided adventure in the park. Hop in a 4x4 at Desert Islands Resort and Spa by Anantara or take a three-hour tour from the mainland.

Desert Islands Resort & Spa

Pair the island’s inspiring natural landscapes with romantic relaxation at the Desert Islands Resort and Spa. It’s a great place to embark on many of the island’s most popular activities – such as horseback rides, archery and falconry visits – as well as for rest and respite. Book a couple’s retreat to benefit from treatments derived from the surrounding oasis, including a desert sand scrub. Try morning meditation or feel invigorated with a rejuvenating yoga session, then sail away on a family kayak trip through mangrove forests. This centre has private yacht access too.

Ancient sites

Sir Bani Yas Island has been transformed into a lush wildlife preserve in recent decades by efforts such as widescale tree planting, so it’s hard to believe this was once an arid landscape. Though the island has since been handed over to nature, historically Sir Bani Yas Island has been relatively populated. You can discover ancient Arabia at several archaeological sites across the island, including a Bronze Age trading post. For a view into a more recent, but just as fascinating, heritage of Sir Bani Yas Island, visit the ruins of a church and monastery discovered in the 1990s. It’s believed to be the oldest Christian archaeological site in the UAE, serving as a testament to the region’s diversity. You can still see the outline of its walls and compartments.

Coral reef diving

Sir Bani Yas Island’s Al Mahara Diving Centre is a great place to experience the colourful, underwater world lying off the coasts of this magnificent island. Thanks to an eight-kilometre no-fish zone surrounding Sir Bani Yas Island’s shores, the waters here are teeming with marine life and vibrant coral reefs. There are classes for first-time divers, refresher courses and experiences to suit seasoned underwater explorers. You might glimpse barracuda, the local hamour fish or hawksbill turtles. The dugong is one of the more unusual species to live in this part of the Arabian Gulf – this slow-moving creature is a marine mammal that looks something like a sea cow.

Sir Bani Yas Island: FAQs

How much time do you need on sir bani yas island.

To visit the famed Arabian Wildlife Park, you’ll need at least three hours. If you’re visiting for a single day and wish to take on another activity, such as paddle boarding, kayaking or horse riding, then it’s wise to allow at least five hours between your arrival and departure time.

Many guests opt to stay in the tranquil wilds overnight, however – if you love nature and outdoor activities, then two or three nights on Sir Bani Yas Island could be ideal.

Why is Sir Bani Yas Island in Abu Dhabi famous?

Sir Bani Yas Island is famous for its ecological advancements and wildlife preservation achievements – more than three million trees, many hand-planted, have made the island a perfect habitat. Thousands of animals roam free here and species reintroduction efforts continue, such as recent projects with the Arabian tahr.

These conservation efforts were initially led by Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who in 1977 passed laws banning hunting as part of a ‘Greening the Desert’ programme.

Sir Bani Yas Island and nearby Dalma Island are the only private Desert Islands where public visits are permitted.

Where is the Church & Monastery of Sir Bani Yas?

The Church & Monastery of Sir Bani Yas is located in the south-western portion of the island, just inside the main road that circumnavigates the land. It’s flanked by protected wetland on one side and the Arabian Wildlife Park on the other. The closest major resort is Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island Al Yamm Villa Resort.

If you don’t plan to join a heritage tour, pick up a map from the island’s visitor centre to make navigation simpler.

A day trip to Sir Bani Yas Island

Early morning is one of the best times to visit the Arabian Wildlife Park, but even if you’re riding in on the noon water taxi, you’ll want to experience its unforgettable sights first. Hop in a 4x4 and tour the island’s inner terrain, where herds of gazelle decorate the horizon and you can even see giraffes up close.

This is the UAE’s largest nature reserve, so you can easily spend several hours on the mountains and plains. Patience often reaps rewards – if you want to see a rare cheetah, prepare to keep your eyes peeled. The island is home to just a handful of these lightning-fast creatures.

On your way out of the park, stop by at the Church & Monastery of Sir Bani Yas to reflect on the island’s long, rich and diverse history.

The first hotel to welcome overnight guests to Sir Bani Yas Island has reopened after being closed for almost a year during the pandemic.

Desert Islands Resort and Spa by Anantara promises a family-friendly stay on an island that is also a protected animal reserve, giving visitors the chance to get up close and personal with more than 10,000 animals including oryx, gazelles, giraffes, ostriches, mountain goats and more.

The National headed out there to discover exactly what it's like to spend the night on this island sanctuary.

The welcome

Getting to the resort involves a ferry crossing from Jebel Dhanna. From here, Anantara staff welcome us, help with luggage and direct us to where to park our cars for the duration of our stay. We take a 20-minute boat ride to the island, and upon arrive at the resot, friendly staff are on hand to greet visitors with a smile. Depending on which resort you're staying at (there are three hotels on the island), you're allocated a bus which takes you on a short ride to your hotel. To Desert Islands Resort and Spa, the journey is about 10 minutes. The drive gives excited children a taste of what's to come, with giraffes and gazelles spotted en route.

The neighbourhood

Sir Bani Yas Island is located off the coast of Abu Dhabi in the Dhafra region, and getting there involves a two-and-a-half-hour drive from the city on the E11. The journey takes you through Ruwais towards Jebel Dhanna, where the ferry port is located. There are a few other hotels in this region, too, if you're looking to include a stay on Sir Bani Yas Island as part of a wider road-trip itinerary – Shipwreck Beach and Shuweihat Island are also close by.

Once on the island, there are three Anantara Resorts: Desert Islands, Al Yamm Villa Resort and Al Sahel Villas. Guests can use the facilities at all of the properties with free shuttle services operating between them.

The safety measures

Staying on an island in the middle of a global pandemic almost gives you an added sense of safety as you know you're already in a place where there's a limit on the number of people that can be there. Anantara's safety measures are also reassuring. Social-distancing measures are followed carefully and, during our two-night visit, we never felt unsafe. Staff wore their masks at all times and adhered to precautionary rules and regulations, rooms were sanitised and tables at all dining venues well-spaced.

Rooms are spacious and offer views overlooking the pool and the beach

The rooms in this beachfront property are spacious and designed to reflect the surrounding environment with sand and earth-coloured tones. Artwork in the rooms, corridors and lobby pay homage to the animals that also call the island home. As a family of five, we stayed in two connecting rooms, with views overlooking the pool area, and down to the beach. Each room has its own balcony, work station, television set, sofa and coffee station. The spacious bathrooms are luxurious, with a separate shower and a tub.

The service

All of the staff were extremely polite and helpful. When driving from one property to the other, the drivers were courteous and confidently answered any questions about the island and its inhabitants. My children were in awe of our tour guide, Hannah, who told us all about the animals we encountered on our wildlife drive. Even when we ran into each other later in the day, she stopped to ask the children how their day was going. There's a real sense of camaraderie between staff, possibly because they all work and live on the island, and the warm energy was catching. Staff were also very accommodating when we needed to change some of our plans, such as moving activity timings or dining set-ups.

A real sense of escapism is in the air when visiting Sir Bani Yas Island and everyone seemed ready to enjoy these new surroundings. If you do only one activity when here, make sure it's the wildlife drive. Hurtling across the plains in an open-roof safari vehicle spotting roaming animals really made us feel like you we could have been somewhere in Afrcia. The drive is about two-hours long, so we had plenty of time to see all of the animals and learn more about them. We were particularly enamoured by a story about a cheetah called Cuba, who had taken on the responsibility of helping to rewild other cheetahs on the island. Our encounters with the giraffes, specifically one named George (our guide could tell which giraffe it was by the shape of his ears), and the ostriches were also a delight.

Wildlife aside, there are plenty of activities to choose from, including archery, mountain biking, kayaking and horse riding. Visitors can also go on a culture and history tour to see the island's landscape and learn more about the fascinating history – it's home to a monastery dating back to the seventh century.

The hotel also has a huge free-form swimming pool overlooking the Arabian Gulf, and a beautiful spa with a wide range of therapies on offer if you're after some downtime.

The ability to go freely between three different hotels on the island means there's no shortage of dining options. We had daily breakfast at The Palm restaurant at Desert Islands Resort and Spa, where the breakfast buffet was served up by staff as part of Covid-19 safety measures. There was lots to keep everyone happy with everything from omelettes to ful medames. The all-day dining restaurant also serves themed buffet dinners throughout the week.

Our favourite dining experience was at Savannah Grill & Lounge, located at Al Sahel Villa Resort. Set outdoors with tables surrounding a bonfire and pots kept warm with burning coal, the South African barbecue night (Dh360 for adults including soft drinks, Dh180 for children) gave us a memorable evening under the stars. Traditional dishes such as boerewors and South African mielie pap, plus plenty of meats on the braai as well as a good selection of vegetarian dishes and a children's corner meant the entire family was happy.

The highs and lows

Sir Bani Yas is a great place to visit if you're looking for a getaway but don't want to travel outside the country. There's a good mix of places to stay for couples, families or groups of friends, with Desert Islands Resort and Spa the best choice for families. The wildlife drive was without a doubt the highlight of our visit. The downside was that getting to the island. Factoring in the drive, the boat and the bus rides requires a heavy investment of time, so it's probably not the best choice for a one-night stay unless you're visiting other places in the region.

The insider tip

Try to book your activities on different days so that they are nicely spread out. This way, you can enjoy the rest of each day by the beach or spending time at the pool.

The verdict

Sir Bani Yas is a wildlife reserve with an ongoing animal conservation programme

Desert Islands Resort and Spa by Anantara is a great choice for anyone with children looking to really escape the city. Family-friendly and with plenty of activities on offer, it's easy to head here and have a wildlife-centric adventure that you simply can't get anywhere else in the country.

The bottom line

An all-inclusive full-board offer is currently available with rates from Dh1,999 ($544) per night, excluding taxes. It includes breakfast, lunch and dinner for two, a complimentary stay for two children up to 12 years old, with breakfast, and one complimentary activity per adult, per stay. Standard check-in is from 2pm and checkout is at noon. Desert Islands Resort and Spa, Sir Bani Yas Island, Abu Dhabi; www.anantara.com/en/desert-islands-sir-bani-yas

If you want to take to the sea when in Abu Dhabi , hire a boat to ferry you to Sir Bani Yas Island. Anantara operates three resorts on Sir Bani Yas, and any one of them can arrange for a wildlife drive around the 34-square-mile nature reserve that covers half of the island. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahayan, the founder of the UAE, set aside the land on Sir Bani Yas in the ’70s and stocked it with numerous species of animals, allowing them to roam freely within the reserve. How far is Sir Bani Yas Island from Abu Dhabi?

Two and a half hours drive from Abu Dhabi and three and a half from Dubai, lies one of the UAE’s greatest masterpieces: Sir Bani Yas Island. This remote and protected island evokes an epiphany of the wonder of human development and restoration, showcasing a symphony of human interaction with a wide variety of animal species, along with the regular cacophany of these animals in chorus. The harmonious way in which these vastly different species cohabit is incredibly fascinating. Moreover, it’s a credit to the conservation team who allow the safe interaction of these animals in an open area, allowing visitors to feel immersed in nature.

safari yas island

What is the background to Sir Bani Yas Island?

Sheikh Zayed is attributed with much of the conservation efforts on Sir Bani Yas Island. At 87 km², it is the largest off of the coast of Abu Dhabi. The island was initially his private dwelling but since his death in 2004, his wish to see Sir Bani Yas transformed into a wildlife reserve has been remarkably achieved and it opened to the public in 2008. In 2020, it was closed due to the Corona Virus pandemic. However, doors were recently reopened to visitors from February 2021.

safari yas island

What animals will I see on Sir Bani Yas Island? Is it safe to be amongst them?

The island is home to some 30 animal species and over 11,000 animals. These include blackbuck antelope, Arabian oryx (saved from extinction by Sheikh Zayed), Gemsbok oryx, reticulated giraffe, cheetah, hyena, spotted chital deer, Indian red deer, rock hyrax, sand gazelle, Reem gazelle, bush turkeys, urial and barbary sheep, tortoise, ostrich, emu and llama. There are also more peacocks than you could poke a stick at (although please refrain from doing this unlike the small unsupervised child we saw attempting to)! As a noteworthy point, the cheetah and hyena are in separate enclosures and not free roaming. This means the island is completely safe. Some of the other larger animals are also distanced well away from the accommodation.

What accommodation options are available?

The island promotes three main experiences which are discussed in detail below. Each is based in a separate resort area run by Anantara, yet all facilities are available to each guest.

  • Desert Islands Resort & Spa

Al Yamm Villa Resort

Al sahel villa resort.

Also on offer are various land- and water-based activities. These include safari drives, nature walks, high tea in the bush, wadi walks, mountain biking, kayaking and more. These are a fantastic way to add structure to your days of relaxation!

Getting to the island from Abu Dhabi and Dubai

Sir Bani Yas Island is best reached by private car and lies approximately 250km from Abu Dhabi International Airport and 350km from Dubai. With speeds along the highway of up to 160km/hr, the distance is quickly covered. If possible, avoid catching the public bus to Ruwais as I have heard this is long and arduous. You’ll first reach the Sir Bani Yas Island Ferry where you can park your car and ferry staff will assist you with your luggage. Light refreshments are served in an air conditioned room. From here there is a water taxi to the island which takes roughly 30-40 minutes. It’s smooth and definitely palatable for someone like me who does have a tendency for sea-sickness on longer trips. There are no commercial flights available although dignitaries can charter a private flight to the airstrip on Sir Bani Yas.

safari yas island

When to visit

The best time of year is during winter (best between December to March), which sounds cold but not in the Middle East! Please see my write up on Abu Dhabi for more details on when to visit and why.

Money and payments

All accommodation stays are paid at the time of booking. The rates fluctuate considerably on the website and increase quite remarkably the closer it gets to the time you intend to visit. If possible, book ahead for best rates. Note that there is a cost effective option for an ‘all inclusive’ stay. This includes breakfast, buffet dinners and one activity per person per trip. Additional activities are charged as extra. Also note that there is an ‘ultra inclusive’ stay which includes alcoholic beverages but this option is only available for stays at The Desert Island Resort & Spa.

What to take and what to wear

Always always pack suncream and a hat! Although there are many trees and undercover options, conditions on the outdoor excursions can be harsh and there’s no point spoiling a fantastic holiday with sore sunburn.

I’d recommend packing:

  • insect repellant
  • swimming attire
  • safari attire
  • enclosed shoes for the wadi walk / safari
  • long trousers if you intend to go horse riding
  • smart casual wear for evening dinners (heels are fine at most restaurants except not for the seafood buffet at Amwaj restaurant which is set on beach sand!)
  • alcohol if desired (pre-bought alcohol is allowed on the island and at the time of writing, there were no bag checks conducted. There is a small bar fridge in villa rooms for storage)
  • credit card to cover incidental payments / food / additional excursions

Accommodation Recommendations

The accommodation options on Sir Bani Yas Island boil down to three magnificent luxury options: traditional hotel room vs seaside villa vs safari villa.

The Desert Islands Resort & Spa

The Desert Islands Resort & Spa is a 64 room hotel, originally built as Sheikh Zayed’s guesthouse. It is an eclectic mix of Arabian, Asian and African influence with an elegant lobby showcasing lanterns and antiques that leads out to an array of restaurants and a large pool bar. It has an old-world charm about it and seemed to be more of a family space, with children and adults enjoying the atmosphere alike. The island buffet dinners are all held here in either The Palm, Al Shams or Amwaj restaurants.

safari yas island

Al Yamm Villa Resort offers 30 beach-style luxury villas, some set facing the beach and some set facing a large lagoon. With its own pool, pool bar and Italian restaurant, it provides all you could desire from a beach resort, including outdoor massage tables and trendy cane chair seating areas. It’s well worth a visit for an afternoon and evening dinner but my personal feeling is that this type of holiday could be experienced in a more cost effective manner at one of the beach resorts in Abu Dhabi city.

safari yas island

The piece de resistance of Sir Bani Yas Island is most certainly the Al Sahel Villa Resort. With 30 luxury safari villas set in a secluded ‘African savannah’ style region on the island, this became the setting of one of my favourite experiences in Abu Dhabi to date. Picture waking up to the sounds of chirping birds and then casting your eyes outside your villa window to see free roaming gazelle, peacocks, bush turkeys and spotted deer on your back doorstep. There was also a cheeky rock hyrax who left a little present on our front doorstep one afternoon. The animals seem to exist in one symbiotic free-for-all, harbouring curiosity for the humans who exist in their periphery.

safari yas island

On arrival, we spent about 15 minutes in sheer wonder and ecstasy looking around the safari villa, replete with canopy bed, old-world writing desk and chair, separate living area, Nespresso facilities, western-style swing door shower and even a steampunk design bathroom with double basins and a deep bathtub!

safari yas island

What can I expect from my private villa pool?

After taking all this in, we opened the back doors to find our private pool overlooking the wildlife under the acacia trees beyond! It was truly breathtaking. Most optional activities are offered in the mornings (6.30-10.30am) and evenings (from 5pm) and so we spent our afternoons poolside, capturing the funny antics of the many animals.

safari yas island

Your socks will definitely be knocked off at Al Sahel and with outdoor luxury massages, savannah high tea and African-style grills on offer in the evening, this is definitely the resort of choice!

safari yas island

Restaurants

The Palm is a large open plan restaurant and the major host for breakfast, lunch and dinner at The Desert Islands Resort & Spa. The majority of evening dinner buffets are held here for guests. We experienced their ‘Eid Buffet’ in May 2021, which had extensive Arabic foods on offer, including slow-cooked lamb, fresh grilled seafood and desserts such as umm ali, rasgulla, laddu, jalebi and luqaimat.

safari yas island

They also had the most decadent kanafa, a well-loved traditional sticky sweet Arabic dessert of shredded filo pastry filled with ricotta cheese and mozzarella and drenched in rose water.

safari yas island

Al Shams pool bar and restaurant is a delightful place to kick off your shoes and relax during the day, or spend the evening for some post dinner digestifs. We spent a couple of evenings here, seated at the bar and enjoying convivial chit chat with the bar staff over some gin and tonics and martinis.

safari yas island

One of my favourite seafood buffets I’ve encountered occurred here at Amwaj! With open grills preparing unlimited lobster, prawns, octopus and squid, this is an experience not to miss whilst staying on Sir Bani Yas Island. There was also seafood paella, seafood cocktails and an extraordinary salad display with cold mussels and calamari. Complemented with a bottle of chardonnay and our evening was nigh complete.

safari yas island

Olio is the resident restaurant at Al Yamm. It whips up contemporary Italian dishes by the seaside for lunch and dinner, whilst providing breakfast with a breeze, overlooking the Arabian gulf. It has a much more intimate feel than the restaurants at the main Desert Islands Resort and is great for a romantic dinner for two, or for those evenings where you feel like dressing a little more fancy. Don’t forget to peruse the fine collection of Italian wines in Olio’s cellar.

Savannah Grill

At Al Sahel, diners are in for a treat. The Savannah Grill drums up unique African flavours such as grilled ostrich and gazelle, biltong and boerewors! With an evening buffet laid out in a campsite under the stars, you’d be forgiven for feeling as if you’re truly on another continent! During the day, the restaurant offers a delectable breakfast and lunch with delicious international cuisine. We had a couple of lunches here, sampling dishes such as the vegetable spring rolls, sweet potato wedges, crispy fried chicken, wild mushroom croquettes, crumbed prawns, grilled prawn salad and butternut salad with pumpkin seeds, pomegranate and feta. This is all to a backdrop of the ambling animals surrounding your table (whilst congenially keeping a respectful distance so as not to interrupt your meal). Keep an eye out through the trees for the two stunning high tea settings.

safari yas island

Experiencing an afternoon high tea in the bush is a once in a lifetime moment. Walking away from the Al Sahel restaurant and concierge area and further into the scrubland, you will truly feel you’ve escaped to nowhere. It’s a wonderful feeling of being well into nature and with no other human sounds except your own. We were shown to our private table and cushioned wicker chairs, the former of which was set with cutlery, a floating flower feature and some small wooden giraffe ornaments. Adjacent this was an elegant spread laid out under a protective umbrella, shielding against the strong afternoon sun.

To start proceedings we commenced with black coffee and breakfast tea, with croissants, cucumber fingers, ham and cheese sandwiches, egg and lettuce dinner rolls and toasted chicken and cream cheese sandwiches. Next in the lineup were scones with fresh jam and cream, koeksisters, macarons, vanilla sponge fingers, shortbread cookies, lemon and fruit tarts, baklava and assorted chocolate spongecakes. Fresh fruit assisted in us cleansing the palate. The afternoon tea had an air of gentle kinesis: from the tree branches swaying in the breeze, to the Reem gazelle roaming around us, to the pea hen and her chick who brazenly waltzed past. The waiter came out twice to check on us but apart from that, we were left completely alone to savour each moment.

safari yas island

Dine by Design

The dine by design option is a take on the above but suited to a luxury beach side offering: a private meal on the beach under a canopied gazebo. We did not have time to include this but it also looked quite lovely!

Itinerary / Optional Activities

The land-based activities are extensive and incredible and provide a brilliant perspective of the island size, topography and conservation efforts at play. My favourites included:

Evening safari

After being collected from our Al Sahel villa by buggy, we were taken to the safari jeep vehicle for our evening jaunt across the Sir Bani Yas Island plains. Having done some safaris in Africa, I must say that these vehicles were a little more comfortable and with only two seats per row, it meant that there was no unfortunate fellow stuck in the middle trying to take snaps. That being said, this was a private safari meaning only two of us were on board anyway!

safari yas island

The safari covered an extensive region of the island and we were fortunate to spot giraffes munching on acacia trees, a variety of gazelle and spotted deer, more peacocks, oryx, barbary and uriel sheep and some cheetah. Currently the cheetah are under a ‘rewilding’ program, where they are being trained to learn to kill and feed, in the hope of releasing them into the wild.

safari yas island

Morning nature walk

Depending upon the time of year which you visit, I’d highly recommend the early morning nature walk. If visiting in the hotter months, go for the 6.30am timeslot, although there is an 8.30 timeslot available. The tour runs for 1.5-2 hours so it can be unbearably hot by the time 10am approaches.

I can not recommend any activity more highly than this one.

safari yas island

A jeep will take you to the entrance of a massive land enclosure.

safari yas island

Once inside, opt to drive past the huge herds of antelopes and deers to the back of the park, allowing more time to walk with the giraffes. Not only could we photograph the giraffe (and surrounding oryx, uriel sheep and barbary sheep, but we were taken on a personalised walk with a qualified professional BETWEEN the giraffe, splitting the pack while they roamed around us. This was unlike anything I had EVER done in Africa and allowed us to get so much more up close and personal than I ever expected or imagined possible.

safari yas island

On the drive back, we stopped in to observe the spotted deer and Indian red deer.

safari yas island

Conservation tour

Another tour that showcases some incredible animals is the ‘Discover Conservation’ activity. On this 4×4 jeep trip around the island, we learnt about the breeding and conservation efforts on Sir Bani Yas Island, as well as meeting some delightful animals such as llama and tortoise up close. We also went past the enclosures for the hyena and emu, which for obvious reasons we couldn’t enter. We did however lay eyes on the enormous emu eggs, which at their heaviest can weigh in at a whopping 680 grams, the equivalent of about 12 chicken eggs.

safari yas island

Sadly we were too late in the day to see the hyena so be sure to choose the 6.30 am tour to have the best chance, before these wily creatures retreat into underground holes to avoid the heat.

Hosted by the cheerful and knowledgable Haleem, we were guided around the Sir Bani Yas wadi, whose surfaces at times had us positively convinced we had landed on Mars. At our first stop he took out his knife and began hacking into the rock (image below left): he was showing us a mammoth salt pan and we tasted the salt he had chipped away for us!

safari yas island

We were then led through the wadi being shown the remains of animal skeletons, oryx footprints, a stretch of frankincense trees, the layers of limestone and various elements such as Magnesium, Potassium and Copper, which all lit up the landscape in a rainbow of colours.

safari yas island

I really enjoyed learning about the fascinating geology in this region and this is definitely one of the tours for which you will require closed shoes!

Visitors are taken to the Sir Bani Yas Equestrian Centre and shown to the stables where the right horse is chosen for each candidate. The track is adjusted according to the skill level of each rider: beginner or intermediate. Advanced riders can gallop along the beach. All equipment is provided from helmets to chaps, although not really necessary if wearing long trousers. My horse (Blue) had a beautiful temperament, although did like to steer off track because he knew the short cut back to the stables!

Water-based

Due to time limitations, we did not do the water-based activities, however these included:

  • Snorkelling
  • Banana Boat Ride
  • Paddle Boarding

safari yas island

All in all, Sir Bani Yas Island is unlike any other experience you will have in the Middle East. I highly recommend visiting if you live in the region or can not travel to Africa due to the current Corona Virus restrictions! As a destination alone, the Al Sahel Resort is well worth the effort. It is luxury and quality combined.

Sir Bani Yas Island – Beach, Safari & Island Tour (Abu Dhabi)

17. December 2022 Categories: Travel reports , Asia , United Arab Emirates , Abu Dhabi

The last stop on our cruise with Mein Schiff 6 was the small island of Sir Bani Yas about 170 kilometers southwest of Abu Dhabi in the Persian Gulf. In addition to a beautiful beach exclusively for cruise guests, the island has, above all, the largest wildlife reserve in Arabia . The nature park is home to over 13,000 wild animals such as oryx antelopes, mountain gazelles, Barbary sheep, cheetahs and giraffes and can be visited on a guided safari.

Things to know about Sir Bani Yas Island

Sir Bani Yas is a natural island located 9 km off the coast of Jebel Dhanna. Measuring 17.5 km from north to south and 9 km from east to west, it is the largest natural island in the United Arab Emirates. The highest elevation is Qarn Zaqīq at 148 meters.

Sir Bani Yas is home to the largest wildlife reserve in Arabia. The reserve, covering an area of 87 square kilometers, was established in 1977 by Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan as a royal nature reserve with the aim of ensuring the survival of Arabia’s endangered species. In addition, during his reign, the sheikh was repeatedly given exotic animals (such as llamas, giraffes and antelopes), which he then settled on the island. Thanks to the successful implementation of the late Sheikh Zayed’s vision, Sir Bani Yas Island is now home to over 13,000 animals from 30 different species, many of which are classified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as endangered or threatened in the wild, including sand gazelle, blackbuck antelope, Urial sheep, Barbary sheep and the Arabian oryx antelope.

Once the reserve was established, Sheikh Zayed wanted the world to share in the results and opened it up to weekend tourists. These tours soon became so popular that visits often had to be booked over a year in advance. Today, Sir Bani Yas is both a bird sanctuary and wildlife reserve, showcasing nature through activities such as adventure safaris, kayaking, mountain biking, archery, hiking and snorkeling. In addition, on the island you can find some historically significant sites, such as cultural evidence from the Stone Age, early Islam and the foundations of a Christian monastery.

Several cruise lines, especially MSC Cruises and TUI Cruises, call at the island as part of their cruise itineraries and use a small part of the island as a “private island”. The section includes beaches and several bar and buffet areas. The concept reminded us a bit of the private islands Castaway Cay from Disney-Cruises or Harvest Caye from NCL-Cruises in the Bahamas, even though we have not been there ourselves.

Mein Schiff 6 is moored directly at the 350-meter-long jetty of the Sir Bani Yas Cruise Port in the east of the island. This was not completed until 2022, before which cruise ships anchored about a kilometer off the island and visitors were brought to Cruise Beach by tender boats. Thanks to the new jetty, two ships can now dock simultaneously and up to 5,000 passengers can embark and disembark directly on the southeastern beach of Sir Bani Yas Island.

Safari at Arabian Wildlife Park

Besides the beautiful beaches, the highlight on the island is certainly the Arabian Wildlife Park . The nature park is home to over 13,000 wild animals and occupies over half of the island. Directly via Mein Schiff you can book a guided jeep or truck safari of about 2 hours over the island and the wildlife park. This currently costs 89 EUR per adult, children over 3 years pay 49 EUR.

We had opted for the early morning truck safari at 8:30 am. The trucks leave right near the ship’s dock, but unfortunately they are very cramped with little seat space for the legs. It was really very uncomfortable, especially with a child on your lap. The trip starts with a short round trip to the center of the island before entering the segregated areas of the Wildlife Park.

And it didn’t take long until we discovered the first animals. The park is home to thousands of animals native to the Arabian Peninsula, including one of the world’s largest herds of the endangered oryx antelope, mountain gazelles, Barbary sheep, Arabian grazers, and free-ranging predators and scavengers such as cheetahs and striped hyenas.

The highlight of the park, however, are certainly the approximately 40 giraffes . We could also observe some of them on our safari through the park. Overall, you can see a lot of animals during the trip, but of course it is not to compare with a safari e.g. in South Africa or Tanzania .

Another way to explore the island of Sir Bani Yas is a guided island tour, which can also be booked directly via Mein Schiff for EUR 59 per person. This approximately 1.5 hour tour takes you along the nature reserve (you can see the animals from a distance if you’re lucky), on to the remains of an old monastery and on to a photo stop at a viewpoint in the north of the island.

The church and monastery were discovered only in the early 1990s, after being buried for centuries. The remains point to early Christianity in the region and the only known early Christian site in the UAE today. A church, a monastery and several houses with courtyards were found on the site, pointing to the 7. and 8th century can be dated. In the north of the island is the Desert Islands Resort & Spa by Anantara , a 5-star luxury resort with 64 rooms and 6 villas.

Overall, the island has rather not so much to offer in terms of sights or beautiful photo spots.

The Cruise Beach

Besides the Arabian Wildlife Park, Sir Bani Yas Island stands for one thing above all – beach & relaxation. Directly at the cruise ship dock, a stretch of beach about 2 kilometers long stretches out with hundreds of palm trees, shady cabanas and more than 2,000 sun loungers.

Everything is organized here for a perfect day for the cruise guests. You get free towels for the beach, you can borrow sand toys for the little ones, there are several stalls with free drinks, at lunchtime a large buffet is set up by the ship and there are also plenty of toilets. For the little ones there is even a small playground and a large bouncy castle right in the sea. You really have everything here to spend a carefree and relaxing day at the beach.

The highlight for our little daughter was definitely the beach, which is full of beautiful shells. The sea was also pleasantly warm and had no waves. The sunbeds and umbrellas in the front area were of course quickly occupied, but the further you went to the back, the emptier it became. We were lucky and even at noon we got a free berth directly near the jetty. But that didn’t matter, because we were with our little one anyway only on the beach and in the water 😉

Sir Bani Yas Island

Sir bani yas island: an eco wildlife safari on the persian gulf.

Hand-crafted, luxury experiences curated by our team—speak to our concierge to learn more

From a private royal playground to a conservation safari island, this is the inspiring and intriguing, certainly almost biblical story of how Noah's Ark came to be on Sir Bani Yas.

Beginning when this 87-sq-km desert island was originally Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan’s private retreat. The founder and first ruler of the United Arab Emirates was given a bevy of exotic animals as gifts when exploring Africa as a young royal. After this, he took an interest and started collecting exotic species now thriving on the island's huge wildlife. Sheik Zayed’s initiative was to save a native species that had teetered on the brink of extinction; the Arabian oryx. Officially declared extinct in the wild in the late 1960s, it’s plight moved the animal-loving emir to begin developing Sir Bani Yas as a place to protect it.

"The oryx is the main reason the island is the way it is today," says Matt Bottomer, an adventure guide who familiarizes visitors staying on Sir Bani Yas with its many resident creatures. "Sheikh Zayed searched the world to see if there were any oryx in captivity. "He found a handful and started a breeding program here."

Sir bani yas island: an eco wildlife safari on the persian gulf beach hut luxury.

To prepare the island for those few remaining antelopes in the early 1970s, the late Sheik launched an extravagant project to ‘green a desert’. Hundreds of thousands of trees, including acacia, ghaf (the national tree of the UAE), frankincense, gum and mangrove were planted in the desert scrubland of the 87-square-kilometer island to create a habitat for the oryx and other animals. This has since grown to a forest of 4 million, irrigated by desalinated water pumped through an undersea pipeline from the mainland, giving the island a gorgeous greenery throughout.

Today, over 10,000 Oryx have been released back into the wild, due to this breeding programme, with 500 currently living on the wildlife park on the island, which also now homes several indigenous species, as well as other Asian and African animals, including cheetahs and one of Shaikh Zayed's favourite animals, the giraffe.

Only a limited number of visitors were allowed on the island when the wildlife park was established in the 1970s. The weekend tours became so popular they had to be booked more than a year in advance. Since Sheik Zayed's death, in 2004, Sir Bani Yas has gradually become more accessible. The 87sqkm island (the size of Abu Dhabi city) has since developed into an eco-tourism resort by the Tourism Development and Investment Company and opened to the public in 2008.

 Reached by a 50-seat plane from Dubai or Abu Dhabi, or a 250-kilometer drive from the UAE capital followed by a ferry crossing, Sir Bani Yas recreates a wilderness, but without the hassle of camping. Awarded the ‘World’s Leading Sustainable Tourism Destination’ at the 2014 World Travel Awards in Anguila, accommodation is in one of three luxury resorts managed by Anantara;

Anantara Al Yamm

This beautiful beach front seclusion was first on our itinerary, these villas include a freestanding bathtub, a wet room and a bedroom which opens up to the beach. These villas face the East side of the island so be prepared for mother nature’s wake-up call; the sun-rise was a magical experience to watch from our bed/terrace/beach. Admire flocks of flamingos gracing the mangrove lagoon and waves washing over pristine white sands from the shoreline barasti villas. Here, you can kayak along the mangrove shores, go pearl-diving or scuba dive off the island in the coral-reef and sea turtle filled Persian Gulf.

safari yas island

Anantara Al Sahel

Live out your wildlife adventure dreams from rustic lodge luxury in the west of the island. We stayed in a beautiful villa created with the look and design of the savannah; high arch ceilings, a free-standing brass bathtub and a four-poster canopy bed, just one part of the many things to enjoy here. The area is surrounded by the Arabian oryx and vibrant peacocks that eat right out of your hand (just ask for the birdseed at reception!) Find a small jacuzzi on the deck with a canopy overhead to shield from the intense sunshine, and a cooling infinity pool by the main reception and restaurant. We got to sample an authentic hog roast in the evenings at the outdoor BBQ restaurant, as well as platitudes of flavours from all over the world.

This is where you have to try the guided safari tours in a 4x4 and get up close to the brother cheetahs (Gabrielle and Gibbs) – who were pretty aloof and chill when we found them! Wadi hikes in the mountains, nature walks on the southeast of the island and mountain biking inside and outside the park are even more direct ways of experiencing the territory. "Each offers the chance to find different animals in different habitats," Bottomer says.

safari yas island

Ananatara Desert Islands

Designed to resemble a coastal fortress, palatial splendour and glittering Gulf views surround the north side resort. This beautiful Arabian hotel features outdoor dinner evenings on the beach, complete with live Arabic music; wrap up in a blanket on the woven carpet sofas or inside a traditional Bedouin tent with only the lanterns and star light to light the way. A perfectly romantic evening, with plates and plates full of flavoursome middle-eastern cuisine to further delight the senses.

The island is also home to UAE's only discovered Christian monastery, which can be visited during a Desert Islands Resort & Spa Culture Tour. Believed to have been built around 600 AD, and abandoned in 750 AD, the monastery was initially discovered during excavations in 1992. Other activities including the pampering Anantara Spa rituals, timeless Arabian activities like archery and falconry, a wide range of water sports and of course a mouthwatering choice of restaurants.

The state-of-the-art stables offers a variety of equestrian activities and lessons, each tailored to meet individual abilities, and are home to a few exquisite ex-race horses, these beautiful Arabian stallions have all been gifted or hand-picked by the Sheikh’s family. I was lucky enough to ride a beauty by the name of ‘Magic’ (it was fate), we rode off into the sunset together after doing a round of trotting and cantering in the paddock.

I cannot recommend this island enough. From the generous and welcoming hospitality by the Island guides, hotel staff, the chefs, the skippers and helmsmen, to exploring all the possibilities and adventures in and around the island, it’s absolutely impossible to feel bored or think back to reality in any sort of way. For the person who has everything, or who thinks they’ve seen it all, take them to Sir Bani Yas and I guarantee, not only will you have the most incredible experience but you will leave feeling inspired and motivated to do what you can to lead a more noble and philanthropic life. Just look out for the Arabian Oryx!

10 Reasons to Visit Sir Bani Yas Island, Abu Dhabi

Last Updated: July 12, 2023

Sir Bani Yas Island abu dhabi

Is Abu Dhabi your next vacation spot? Then there is some advice for you! Don’t limit yourself to popular tourist destinations, especially if you are visiting during peak season. The reason is that popular attractions such as Yas Island in Abu Dhabi will be swarmed with local and tourist crowds. You should visit them, probably on the weekdays, but other hidden gems and upcoming attractions in Abu Dhabi are equally interesting to visit.

Sir Bani Yas Island

1. visit an idyllic natural island in the uae.

Sir Bani Yas Island

Instead of following the current trend in the UAE of admiring artificially constructed or modern islands, visit this pristine natural island in Abu Dhabi. Created through the deposits of salt, lime and other minerals in the Persian Gulf, the island began taking shape from these deposits millions of years ago. Sir Bani Yas Island is the largest natural island in the UAE and is only three hours away from Abu Dhabi city center. It is located off the coast of the Abu Dhabi mainland in the southwest. If you are wondering how to get to Sir Bani Yas Island, a road drive and a boating excursion will bring you to this quaint island sheathed in endless stretches of pristine beaches and beautiful views of the Persian Gulf. Start with a three-hour road trip from Abu Dhabi or Dubai to Jebel Dhanna Ferry Point, where a boat will take you to Sir Bani Yas Island Ferry Point. As soon as you step foot on this island, you will realize it is an idyllic paradise for nature lovers.

2. Find an Escape From Ultramodern Life

This island is the perfect place to pause for a bit from the chaos of the modern world. The most popular attractions in Abu Dhabi are a mix of cultural and modern essences. Sir Bani Yas Island, however, is sheathed in utter beauty and natural splendors. The first ruler of the UAE had a keen eye for natural beauty and kept Sir Bani Yas Island in its natural form and didn’t let modern developments influence it; He turned it into a nature conserve. On this island, it feels different from the modern world as we know it. With more nature than modernism and a plethora of wilderness and wildlife, it comes as a savior to cherish your weary soul with a few comforts and a wealth of natural beauty.

3. Discover History And Heritage

There’s more to this island than just beaches, wildlife, and deserts. Did you know that Sir Bani Yas Island is home to Christian church ruins that date back to 600 AD? A guided tour of the island will showcase most of its history and heritage. The place has traces of pre-Islamic times in the UAE, where you can see remnants of the Bronze Age and Nestorian Christian ruins. The island is rich in archaeological treasures and has 18 sites for history buffs to explore.

4. Admire The Exotic Wildlife

sir bani yas island wildlife

It is one destination in Abu Dhabi where you will find animal footprints rather than carbon footprints. In the land of human dominance, where people flaunt their contemporary vanity in creativity and innovation, this small island creates a world where wildlife takes center stage, and humans serve as their ally. Come to Sir Bani Yas Island, and you go back to the times when animals ruled the land. Find yourself on a horse riding across the golden dunes of Arabia, spotting Arabian gazelles, giraffes, and oryxes roaming freely, and watch falcons showcase their agility and cleverness during falcon shows. A trip to Arabian Wildlife Park is a must on your visit, where you will encounter over 17000 animals wandering freely in a vast wilderness. The Arabian Wildlife Park on Sir Bani Yas Island entry fee is around AED 15 per person.

5. Enjoy Luxury in Solace

The UAE is extravagant and never misses an opportunity to flaunt its larger-than-life personality. This holds true for its luxury quotient as well. In the UAE, you will find that luxury and hospitality together make a perfect pair for catering to its guests. You will be pampered and treated like royalty, with the finest amenities and hospitality. This luxury essence seeps into the remote Sir Bani Yas Island as well. Three of the most opulent resorts from the world-renowned Anantara resort brand are nestled within the island and invite you to enjoy a luxury stay in the lap of nature. Enjoy blissful times with opulent service at Desert Island Resort and Spa by Anantara, Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island Al Yamm Villa Resort, and Anantara Sir Bani Yas Al Sahel Villa Resort. You will find these to be the perfect retreats to recharge and relax during your time away from the demands of daily life.

6. Gear Up For Desert Safari Adventures

Desert Safari

A desert safari tour is undoubtedly one of the best things to do in Abu Dhabi . Sir Bani Yas Island beckons you to explore and enjoy with its eclectic mix of exotic Arabian wildlife and vast stretches of gorgeous landscapes. Prepare yourself for some of the most incredible adventure excursions of your life as you travel through the sweeping dunes and spot Arabian wildlife on a safari tour. If you search the internet for a Desert Safari Abu Dhabi guide , you will come across Al Wathba Desert, Rub Al Khali, and Al Khaznah. Sir Bani Yas Island’s deserts are rarely mentioned, making it the most unexplored location for desert dune rides and free-roaming wildlife viewing. Embark on thrilling wildlife safaris while experiencing the thrill of off-beat drives through the Arabian dunes guided by knowledgeable rangers who will share insights about the animals and their natural setting.

7. Go Snorkeling or Scuba Diving in Warm Gulf Waters

Being surrounded by the crystal-clear waters of the Persian Gulf, Sir Bani Yas Island offers a diverse underwater realm for those keen on diving and who enjoy the adrenaline rush of exploring the underwater world. The coral reefs, colorful fish, and turtles are abundant in the waters surrounding Sir Bani Yas Island. Take a scuba diving excursion to understand this fascinating underwater world. Try snorkeling in the pristine Persian waters, and you might swim with a carefree, laid-back sea turtle having a good time. It is one of the clearest, cleanest, least crowded spots in the UAE to enjoy water adventures.

8. Explore The Beaches And Water Sports

beach

Not so keen on plunging and swimming underwater? Try out a variety of fascinating water sports above the water’s surface, where the thrill is fantastically splashing! Prepare to relax with a quick swim or try kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, or even deep-sea fishing. Not in the mood for an adrenaline rush? Then just lay back and soak up the sun on the pristine beachfront, or enjoy lazy strolls along the shoreline to marvel at the calmness and beauty of nature.

9. Find Sublime Bliss Without the Throngs of Tourists

Sir Bani Yas provides you with solace and serenity at a time when most of Abu Dhabi is overcrowded. Sir Bani Yas is that warm embrace you so desperately need to loosen the knots of stress in your mind because it is far from dense populations of locals and international tourists. It is a refuge from the busy world and a soother for the weary soul. Visit, take in the splendor of nature, interact with wildlife, and enjoy the pampering you desperately need so that you feel rejuvenated when it’s time to return to the real world. The amalgam of solace, sublime, and solitude is an antidote to a stressed mind, and Sir Bani Yas Island offers the perfect combination of them.

10. Create Memories For Life!

Lastly, Sir Bani Yas Island provides a unique, immersive experience that will create lasting memories. Sir Bani Yas Island can be summed up as a small Arabian world that is pure, untouched, and true to its originality. It’s an amazing place to create memories so unique from the rest of the UAE’s popular tourist attractions and yet, it keeps you interested at all times. From thrilling encounters with wildlife to breathtaking sunsets and the warmth of Emirati hospitality, the island promises an unforgettable vacation.

On your Abu Dhabi visit, you should undoubtedly see the city’s stunning landmarks, but set aside a day to travel to Sir Bani Yas Island. The place is so unique and refreshing from the rest of Abu Dhabi that you don’t fully appreciate it until you go there. You will frequently return to Sir Bani Yas Island to deepen your soul and disconnect for a while. It will become your favorite corner in the world to hide away for a few moments when you feel overwhelmed. Visit once and you will understand.
