Review: British Airways Euro Traveller A319 (MXP-LHR)

British Airways Euro Traveller A319

I’d checked in online the day before and, somewhat amusingly, had been offered the chance to upgrade to Club Europe for €180. I admire British Airways’ attempts to eek out every last cent/euro cent/penny from their passengers but I’d have to take leave of my senses before I paid €180 to move from an exit row seat to a Club Europe seat.

The flight is 90 minutes long and I have more leg room in my exit seat than they have in Club Europe, why would I move?

Boarding was called in the lounge 45 minutes before the departure time and, as I had two carry-ons and was in an exit row (so no bags allowed under the seat) I sped down to the gate to find boarding already in process – that’s early for a intra-European flight.

Luckily there were only a handful of passengers at the gate so I was somewhere around the 5th on board. That meant I got the overhead space I needed….and that was just as well because, by the time boarding was finished, the cabin crew were scrabbling around the cabin trying to find somewhere to fit the late comers hand baggage.

The British Airways Airbus A319 is very hard to tell apart from their A320 and, as such, is set out in the same way….a 3-3 layout in Euro Traveller.

The exit rows have ample leg room and, to my mind, are the best seats on the aircraft.

Compare that to the regular seats just a row behind:

I tried to take the photos from as similar an angle as possible but, if you don’t see a big difference, you’ll just have to trust me….the exit rows are a lot more roomy.

Here’s a view of the regular Economy Class seats from a different view:

And, just for comparison, here’s what the Club Europe seats look like on the A319:

If you’re wondering what the difference in leg room is…there isn’t any. You get the middle seat blocked in Club Europe but, if you care about leg room, that’s not much good to you so you’re better off with the masses in Euro Traveller as long as you can book an exit row.

I’m 6ft tall and have reasonably long legs (apparently) and I find the exit rows on these aircraft to be just fine.

Plenty of room for my knees….

…and plenty of room if I want to stretch my legs out:

Food & Drink

One of the better things about British Airways is that they haven’t lowered themselves to charging for food and drink on their flights…at least not yet. To be honest its one of the few things left that separates their European operations from those of a low-cost carrier.

On this flight there was a choice of a chicken & bacon roll or a vegetarian salad…I went for the roll…..

….and a mocha iced bun:

There wasn’t a lot of it but it was included in the price of the ticket and this was only a 90 minute flight….so it’s tough to complain.

All the usual drinks were on offer (and were included with the price of the ticket), sodas, juices, alcoholic drinks (beer, wine etc…) and the drink that British Airways does best….tea.

I’ve been getting lucky with my British Airways cabin crews recently as this was another friendly group that went about their duties efficiently and with a smile.

We had taken off at 11:34 (not bad for a scheduled departure time of 11:25) and the crew were coming around with food and drinks at 11:45. That’s pretty good.

It’s very hard to critique the service you get when you’re only in the air for 90 minutes but I saw the crew helping passengers with their carry on baggage, they were greeting passengers with a smile at the door and they served food/drinks quickly….and cleared up just as quickly. They worked well. You can’t ask for much more than that on a flight like this.

Bottom Line

Not a bad flight at all. The crew was good, we weren’t delayed by weather, air traffic control or by anyone going on strike…all around I consider that a success.

I still don’t see why anyone would ever pay to sit in Club Europe on a flight like this (as long as there was an exit row seat you can book) but each to their own 🙂

Flight Review: British Airways Euro Traveller

BA831 – Dublin to London Heathrow (DUB-LHR) 3 November 2016 Airbus 320-200 G-EUYV Seat: Euro Traveller 6F Departure: 07:10 Arrival: 08:45

Recently British Airways have been using the 200 gates at Dublin Airport which means walking across the tarmac and boarding via stairs. I quite like this however it is never good when raining and windy which it will be during winter. Priority boarding was announced and boarding proceeded swiftly.

british airways euro traveller seat map

Euro Traveller Service

Service commenced swiftly and there were three choices of complimentary meal for passengers in Euro Traveller. The options comprised of a Ham and Cheese Croissant, a Cheese and Tomato Croissant or a Pain au Chocolat.

british airways euro traveller seat map

The seats are designed to have the literature at the top of the seat in order to provide more knee room, which is quite successful. The lady next to me was 6’1″ and her knees were pushed into the back of the seat in front of her which looked uncomfortable. Provision of a moving map is always welcome when flying however it is a shame video entertainment is not offered even on longer sectors.

Overall Thoughts

British Airways Euro Traveller is a decent product for a short hop. The complimentary food for the breakfast service is better than what is offered for the remainder of the day.

Seat pitch and cabin ambiance is adequate for the class of travel. Fares continue to remain competitive and the product is on par with other European airlines. Thanks for reading and if you have any questions or comments please leave them below.

Simple Flying

British airways club europe vs euro traveler - a complete review.

As a Simple Flying reporter, I've been at Heathrow three times in as many days . On Tuesday I flew out to Toulouse, returning yesterday. As both legs were with British Airways, I flew one leg in Club Europe, and the other in Euro Traveller in order to review the two cabins for Simple Flying readers.

Flight Details

I flew to Toulouse to report on the delivery of ANA's first A380 . As such, I flew out on BA378 on Tuesday. This was an A321 service departing Heathrow at 13:35 and arriving in Toulouse at 16:25. The flight actually departed late at 13:54, but arrived 15 minutes early at 16:10. This flight was flown in Club Europe on an A321.

The return journey was flown in Euro Traveller aboard BA379. This was operated between Toulouse and London, utilising an A320 with Sharklets. The flight was scheduled to depart at 17:10 and indeed managed to depart on time. However, the flight landed significantly ahead of schedule. In fact, it landed 25 minutes early at 17:40.

British Airways uses the group process to board their flights. On short haul flights, this consists of five groups:

 • 1st Group - Club Europe and BA Executive Club Gold passengers;
 • 2nd Group - BA Executive Club Silver Members;
 • 3rd Group - BA Executive Club Bronze Members;
 • Group 4 & 5 - All other passengers.

Being in Club Europe meant that I was one of the first people to board the flight. Interestingly, as the flight was almost full, British Airways used the lure of preboarding to encourage passengers to gate check their bags. As such, these passengers boarded the aircraft before Group 1.

Thankfully, however, as Club Europe is spacious with a limited number of seats, there is no rush to secure space. At my seat I was offered a "hot" towel; however it felt more like it had just fallen out of the sun.

On the return flight, I was allocated Group 4 as a consequence of travelling in Euro Traveller. Thankfully this had no impact on me, as I was one of the last passengers to board the aircraft following traffic en route to the airport. I was even able to find enough space in an overhead locker to cram the bulkier of my two bags.

In Club Europe passengers are provided with the exact same seat as Euro Traveller passengers. These are all laid out in a 3-3 configuration, however, in Club Europe, the middle seat is replaced by a table. As such, every Club Europe seat is either a Window or Aisle seat. I was sat in 2A, a window seat with 30" of pitch. I had ample leg room on the flight and was able to store my bag under the middle seat in front, meaning my foot area was completely clear.

The return in Euro Traveller was a very different story. While the seat pitch on the A320 is generally equal to that of the A321, I discovered that this was not so in row 30. But this wasn't the worst part of my seat.

Seat 3oA has no window. As such, I spent the duration of the flight blissfully unaware of the outside world. This was a slightly claustrophobic experience as I was surrounded by walls on two sides. However, the worst part was the turbulent departure.

At the rear of the aircraft, passengers are furthest from the aircraft's centre of gravity, meaning that every bump is amplified. When this is tied in with the lack of outside awareness, the experience is unpleasant, to say the least. Additionally, British Airways confirmed that row 30 has 29 inches of pitch.

In Flight Service

The inflight service on British Airways varies wildly depending on your cabin. This is mostly driven by the price difference between the two cabins. In Club Europe catering is complimentary, and I was offered a choice of dishes. I opted for the "Shaved Scottish roast beef on a tartar cream with rocket, tomato and Parmesan". While this was delicious, it was a meal with very little substance. For dessert, I received a "Do & Co’s passion-fruit panna cotta", which turned out to be the highlight of the trip. Drinks wise, I was able to have a complimentary alcoholic drink and a coffee. I requested a second coffee approximately 20 minutes before landing, and the stewardess went out of her way to brew a whole new pot for me.

Again, the service in Euro Traveller differed substantially, however, so too did the ticket price. No complimentary refreshments are offered in the economy cabin, meaning all passengers must buy refreshments from the onboard menu. I opted for the Cheese and Mushroom Toastie and a packet of Percy Pigs, setting me back around seven pounds. Although these were suitably tasty, not everyone had the option. The service began at the front of the cabin, then the back of the cabin. A fellow journalist in row 20 was only able to buy a brownie as the food had run out by the time they got to him.

On arrival at Toulouse, I was one of the first passengers off of the aircraft. This was as there were only 5 passengers ahead of me. The process was fairly quick and meant I didn't need to queue for passport control. However, on arrival, it took 10 minutes from when the seatbelt sign was switched off, to stepping off of the aircraft. This was due to the fact that British Airways only deplane from the front at Heathrow.

Overall Opinion

Overall, Club Europe was a far superior product, however, this is to be expected to the difference in ticket price. A lot of people dislike the fact that the seat is the same, however, the food and service is nice. On balance, however, despite this, I would still likely only opt to travel in Club Europe in order to accumulate additional frequent flyer points.

I flew in economy on British Airways' Boeing 777 from New York to London. It was a fine option for crossing the Atlantic, but the food needs work.

 • British Airways ranked third to last of 17 airlines in a recent customer satisfaction survey.
 • I flew the airline for the first time since 2018 to see how it compares to other long-haul options.
 • I thought the seat was more comfortable than many competing carriers, but the food could be better.

British Airways is undergoing a $9 billion "transformation" to revamp its operation.

The airline's Airbus A320 and A321neo planes, used for short-haul flights, are getting new seats while its massive Airbus A380s are getting upgraded first-class cabins, for example.

The investment comes as British Airways struggles with poor reliability, dated cabins , and faltering customer service. The latter landed it third-to-last in a ranking of 17 airlines' customer satisfaction on long-haul flights from a British consumer advocacy group published in February.

Despite the reputational challenges, I thought my economy experience on a recent nonstop between New York and London was fine in terms of comfort and entertainment — but catering needs some work.

In March, I flew from New York to London Heathrow on a British Airways Boeing 777 in economy.

With just a carry-on, I headed straight to security. But there were plenty of kiosks and agents to assist with check-in had I needed it.

The biometric tech worked like a charm. I boarded the 777 plane and went to seat 26A — an exit row window in the first section of coach.

Although I didn't plan to sleep on the daytime transatlantic flight, I was happy with the headrest — a must for me when sleeping on airplanes.

Moreover, I thought the seat was better padded compared to others I've experienced.

In my experience, United has slimmer seats that can get uncomfortable after six or seven hours across the Atlantic.

I did have a few issues with the seat, however. For one, the exit door juts out — abruptly blocking the otherwise endless legroom.

I was assigned a random seat at check-in, so I didn't have much choice. However, I'll take the extra legroom — the up to 38 inches of pitch was better than the 31 inches offered in the rows behind me.

31 inches for standard economy seats is on par with competitors like Delta, United, Finnair, and Virgin Atlantic Airways.

I also had to deal with the location of the tray table and the TV screen — one reason I typically avoid the exit row on long-haul flights, if I can.

And my personal items had to be stored during takeoff and landing to keep the exit row clear. Luckily, the window seat had a little wall pocket.

I wouldn't choose 26A myself. But I did like that I could get up from the exit row seat to use the lavatory without disturbing my neighbors.

Despite my gripe with the exit row, I don't really need the space. I can imagine taller travelers would happily sacrifice a convenient TV for more legroom, though.

I wouldn't choose 26A myself. But I did like that I could get up from the exit row seat to use the lavatory without disturbing my neighbors.

The angle of the screen positioned up may be awkward for some travelers, but I didn't find it that bothersome.

I didn't use it much, though, preferring to binge the Traitors UK on my Kindle instead.

The exit row's various inconveniences are the reality of many long-haul airlines and are not a British Airways issue.

Sometimes, airlines will mount the television to the bulkhead to avoid it needing to be stored beside the seat. This wasn't the case on my plane.

Nevertheless, I can't totally fault British Airways for the annoying parts of the exit row seat — though I can recommend people avoid the specific window seat of 26A (and 26K) due to the protrusion of the exit door blocking legroom.
