The latest addition to the Tata   Safari  line-up is the new Dark Edition variant, making it the fifth Tata model to be offered with this variant. Prices for the Safari Dark Edition starts at Rs 19.05 lakh and goes up to Rs 22.51 lakh (ex-showroom, India).

2022 Tata Safari Dark Edition: exterior changes

The Dark Edition Safari comes finished in a paint shade called Oberon Black (same shade as on the Harrier Dark Edition). Tata has further given gloss black accents on the grille, headlight surrounds and window surrounds (all of which are chrome on the standard model) as well as black 18-inch alloy wheels. The only chrome visible on this new trim is on the Tata and Dark Edition badges. These changes are very much in line with what Tata has done with the other Dark Editions models –  Altroz, Nexon, Nexon EV  and  Harrier .

2022 Tata Safari Dark Edition: interiors

On the inside, the Safari is finally available with an all-black theme across the cabin with a 'Blackstone Matrix' insert on the dashboard. Prior to this, the Safari was only offered with either a white or beige interior theme, even on other special variants like the Adventure  and  Gold edition .

In terms of equipment, the Safari Dark Edition comes well kitted, considering it is based on the higher XT+ and XZ+ trims of the standard SUV. Hence, its top-spec trim gets features like an 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity support, ventilated first and second row seats (also offered on the Safari Gold Edition), a wireless charger, JBL audio system, Tata iRA connected car tech, 7.0-inch part-digital instrument cluster, an air purifier, panoramic sunroof and leatherette seat upholstery.

2022 Tata Safari Dark Edition: engine and gearbox

Powering the new Safari Dark edition is the same 170hp, 350Nm, 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine. The Dark Edition trim is also available with the option of both a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic gearbox, just like the regular Safari.

2022 Tata Safari Dark Edition launched in India, prices start from Rs 19.05 lakh

Tata Motors has now expanded its Dark line of models to include the Tata Safari . As with the other Dark models, the Tata Safari Dark Edition comes with a fully blacked-out look on the inside and out. Bookings for the Safari Dark Edition have begun online and at Tata Motors dealerships.

Tata Safari Dark Edition exterior changes

This variant of the Tata Safari is finished in the Oberon Black exterior body colour as seen on other Tata Motors' Dark offerings. The chrome highlights on the outside have also been replaced with black panels like on the grille and the roof element while the 18-inch alloy wheels are also finished in black. The fender badges unique to these models also appear here.

Tata Safari Dark Edition interior changes, new features, safety

On the inside, the Tata Safari Dark edition continues with a black and grey theme. the dashboard now gets a textured grey fascia while the off-white trim and upholstery has been replaced to a darker shade. The door panelling has been turned black while the leather seat upholstery is finished in black with blue highlights.

The Dark Edition also comes with a few more features which first debuted on the Gold edition. So the Tata Safari now gets first and second row ventilated seats, wireless Android Auto/Apple Carplay and an air purifier. Other features of note on the Tata Safari are the iRA suite of connected-car tech , mood lighting, TPMS and an electronic parking brake with an auto-hold function. Carried over from the Harrier are the large panoramic sunroof, the 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, 9-speaker JBL audio, 7-inch digital instrument cluster, auto headlamps and wipers, climate control, six-way powered driver's seats, tilt and telescopic steering, cruise control and a reverse parking camera.

Safety features include 6 airbags, the new added rear disc brakes, auto-dimming IRVMS, TPMS, ISOFIX child seat mounts, corner function foglamps, hill-hold, hill-descent control, corner-function fog lamps and a rear-view camera.

Tata Safari Dark Edition engine, specifications

The new Safari Dark Edition remains mechanically unchanged from the standard SUV. The same 2.0-litre FCA-sourced Multijet diesel engine from the Tata Harrier , which Tata calls Kryotec, is fitted to the Safari with 172PS and 350Nm. The engine is mated to a 6-speed manual and a six-speed automatic gearbox . Also, the traction-based drive and off-road modes that the Harrier first introduced to the Indian market have been carried over here too.

The Tata Safari Dark Edition is available with the top XT+/XTA+ and XZ+/XZA+ variants of the three-row SUV. Prices start from Rs 19.05 lakh, at a Rs 26,000 premium over the standard Safari.

• Tata Safari Red Dark Edition showcased – Top highlights

Tata Motors launched the Dark Editions of the Harrier and Safari alongside their facelift versions in India in October 2023. But now, at the Bharat Mobility Expo 2024, the automaker has showcased the Red Dark Edition of its three-row flagship SUV. Expected to be launched soon in the upcoming months, this special edition of the Safari will be sold along with standard variants. In this article, we will pen down all the highlights of the Safari Red Dark Edition.

Upfront, the Red Dark Edition of the Safari gets horizontal red inserts near the LED headlamps and a Tata logo finished in black. In profile, the front and rear brake callipers along with the Safari badging on the front doors are now painted red. At the rear, the only change is the red-painted Safari badging on the tailgate. Apart from this, the SUV remains identical to its Dark Edition.

Tata Motors has continued the same red and black theme inside the SUV. The dashboard now comes wrapped in an all-black interior theme with red accents and the Dark badging all around. The door handles and the grab handles on the centre console are also painted red complemented with red seat upholstery and red ambient light. Further, the panoramic sunroof gets red ambient lighting around it. In addition to this, the Safari Red Dark Edition will get all the features that Tata offers on the top-spec variant of the Safari.

Engine and powertrain

Under the hood, the Safari Red Edition will continue with the same 2.0-litre diesel engine that you get with the standard Safari. This engine is tuned to produce 170bhp and 350Nm of torque, sending power to the front wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed torque converter.
