What Do the Cruise Captains’ Quarters Look Like? (inc Videos)

Have you ever wondered where the cruise ship captains’ quarters are located and what they look like?

Well, you are not alone, it’s a common question, and not unsurprisingly, there aren’t many captains sharing details of their private quarters.

Cruise Captains Luxury Quarters

However, after some research, we have found some glimpses of the inside of the captain’s quarters.

The size and spec of the quarters will vary depending on the cruise line and the individual ships’ perceived prestige.

So we have endeavored to find as many examples as possible.

What Do the Cruise Captains’ Quarters Look Like?

The cruise captain’s quarters will usually be on par with the average suite types of rooms you’ll find on the ship.  Typically the larger or more luxurious the ship, the larger and more luxurious standard you can expect the captain’s quarters to be.

Although often traveling alone, the captain’s quarters will be large enough for when they do have family or guests staying onboard with them.  Hence large bedrooms and living space.  Much larger than the rest of the crew’s cabins.

As well as typical suite-like features the quarters will have an office with monitors, wifi and various forms of communication, and navigational indicators and monitors so the captain can keep abreast of everything at all times.

There will also be room for meetings with the crew and navigational staff members.

Below are some real-life examples of cruise captains’ quarters that we have found.

Royal Caribbean Cruise Captains Quarters

TikTok and Royal Caribbean cruise captain @captainjohnnyfaevelen gave a scarce insight into the cruise captain’s quarters on mega cruise ship Harmony of the Seas , one of the largest cruise ships in the world, and no doubt a larger than average captains cruise quarters.

@captainjohnnyfaevelen #welcome to the #captain #cabin and #office #onboard @Royal Caribbean #harmonyoftheseas #oasis #class #modern #cruiseship #shipslife #comfortable #life #at #sea ♬ original sound – Captain Johnny

On its launch in 2016, Harmony of the Seas was the largest cruise ship in the world.  It has since been overtaken by Symphony of the Seas (2018) and now Wonder of the Seas (2022).

So this captain’s quarters are likely also proportionally larger than many others, so not typical size-wise for the average cruise ship.

From the video, we can see Royal Caribbean Oasis-class cruise ships have very generous-sized captains’ quarters.

On entering the cabin, there is a spacious foyer with doors to:

  • Guest Bathroom
  • Master Bedroom
  • Large Living room

The quarters have a larger Master Bedroom with Queen size bed.  The bedroom includes a walk-in closet and bathroom with a large bathtub and shower.

The living room is large and spacious, with a dining table and four chairs.   A more relaxed sofa area includes a coffee table, a 55-inch TV, and a recliner chair.

The living room leads to the pantry, which has a refrigerator and dishwashers, various cooking appliances, and lots of food storage space.

Off the living room is the Captain’s Office which can also be accessed directly from the navigation bridge .  The captain’s office has a deck and chair and various monitors on display.

Celebrity Cruise Captains’ Quarters

The video below is by Captain Kate McCue, who has a well-known social media presence in the cruising world.

She’s captain of the cruise ship Celebrity Edge at the time of the recording.  This is a 130,000 gross tonnage cruise ship with the capacity to carry over 2900 passengers.

@captainkatemccue CRIBS: Captain’s Quarters, Suite Life Edition & tour du jour. You asked for it… #fyp #foryou #captainscabin #celebrityedge #cruise #captain #room ♬ Alone – Petit Biscuit

The video above just gives an inside view of her Captains quarters.   She walks through the entrance foyer to the main living space with a large corner sofa, some other comfy-looking chairs, and a large wall-mounted TV.

Kate then highlights the infinite verandah window, which opens fully at the touch of a button.  This makes the verandah feel like part of the quarters, letting in the fresh sea air and natural light.

The floor-to-ceiling window gives the captain a view of the bridge.

In Kates’s quarters, she highlights her patron saint of seafarers, St Nichols, which many seafarers, not just cruise captains, always travel with for good luck.

The captain’s bedroom has a King Sized bed facing another reasonably large TV.

Attached is a water closet with dual sinks, a shower, and a smallish soaking tub (which kate uses to wash her Elf Sphynx cat named bug).

She separated the

dining room with a TV, and a small galley area with a refrigerator.  These rooms are open-planned, joined with the captain’s office which is directly attached to the bridge.

Where Are the Cruise Captains’ Quarters?

The cruise captains’ quarters are typically located to the rear of the ship’s bridge.  This provides the captain with speedy access to the bridge at a moment’s notice, should it be required.

The access from the bridge with usually be to the captain’s office area of their living quarters., Access to their main living quarters can also be accessed by a separate entrance.

When Does The Cruise Captain Sleep?

Cruise ship captains will typically sleep at night, however, they are on call 24/7 for any emergencies that may arise.

The captain doesn’t need to be on the bridge at all times as there will be much other staff who can navigate the ship in the captain’s absense, or while they sleep.

The Parts of the Cruise Ship You Don't Get to See: What Do the Crew Quarters Look Like?

Hidden belowdecks, they've got their own gyms, bars, hair salons, mess halls and more.

Your average cruise ship can have hundreds to thousands of crew members on board. While it's obvious that they must have their own bunks, passengers may not realize that crew members have an entire ecosystem hidden belowdecks.

cruise crew living quarters

Crew members have to be physically fit to meet the demands of the job, and staff must be physically presentable as they're in the hospitality industry. They need to blow off steam between shifts, and eat, and drink, and party. Mingling with guests is a no-no, so crew members have separate gyms, hair salons, laundromats, restaurants, bars, clubs, jacuzzis, swimming pools and more. The quality of these differs from ship to ship, and we'll take a look at a range of them here.

Cruise Hive is an enthusiast website run by Emrys Thakkar, a longtime cruise ship employee. On the site he provides a guided tour of the crew facilities on a Carnival ship :

The Main Corridor

cruise crew living quarters

Thakkar refers to this as "I-95," as it's the main corridor that crew members use to travel the length of the ship.

Laundry Facilities

cruise crew living quarters

The crew laundry, along with ironing stations so staff member stay crisp-looking.

Internet Cafe

cruise crew living quarters

While crew members have WiFi throughout their quarters, the dedicated crew internet cafe is where the signal is strongest.

Crew Barber

cruise crew living quarters

Since crew members are out to sea for months at a time, they need a dedicated place to manage those coifs.

cruise crew living quarters

Not just a dining area, but the after-shift hangout spot where crew members can watch sporting events on the TV. And Thakkar provides this poignant bit of information: "One of the best times to eat in the mess is at midnight, it is when food not used in the guest dining rooms head on down to the crew," i.e. the fancy desserts that guests have taken a pass on.

cruise crew living quarters

There's a distinction between crew and staff. The former help operate the ship and its systems, while the latter are the retail and hospitality employees. Staff dine in a separate area from crew.

Officers Dining Rooms

cruise crew living quarters

Thakkar says there are two side-by-side dining rooms that only the Captain and the Officers are allowed to use. Inside they are waited on, like guests.

cruise crew living quarters

It doesn't offer the ocean view that the guest gyms do, but there's plenty of iron to pump.

cruise crew living quarters

The social hotspot for crew members, it opens every night and gets "really busy" around 9 or 10pm, Thakkar writes. And drinks here cost a lot less than they do abovedecks: "Prices are very cheap, I'm not going to tell you how much because it is so cheap you won't like it!"

Crew Pools and Jacuzzis

cruise crew living quarters

"You might have wondered what that area is with the jacuzzis or small pool down below near the ship's bow. This is an area where the crew can head on out for some fresh air. When off-duty they can relax in the pools as much as they want and enjoy the stunning ocean views."

You'll notice there are no shots of sleeping quarters. I couldn't find any on the site, but I did find this YouTube video of a crew or staff member on an unnamed ship giving a tour of her room. It's pretty dang tight:

Depending on the cruise line, facilities can get a lot swankier, as we'll see next.

Crew Center is a website run by ex-crew members who share experiences and offer helpful tips to newbies. On their Crew Facilities section, they feature photographs from different ships to give you a sense of the range. For instance, check out the facilities on a Celebrity Cruises Edge Class ship :

Crew Bar/Lounge

Crew Outdoor Lounge

Not too shabby, eh? And I have to say it goes up a level from there on an AIDA Cruises Hyperion Class ship:

Crew Hair Salon

Crew Jacuzzi (w/ hilarious slogan)

Crew Living Conditions on a Cruise Ship

If someone came up to you on the street and asked if you would like to live in a twelve-by-twelve box with a total stranger for six months, you’d undoubtedly say, “No thanks.” Yet, at sea, this is done willingly.

Cruise Ship Cabins can Vary Depending on Position and Cruise Liner

It’s true that accommodations are sometimes cramped, especially on smaller vessels, but the ship’s company is generally interesting and friendly. Many people compare it to their first year in a college dorm, without the homework.

On the larger cruise ships, most employees share cabins on one of the crew decks, and some people, especially the cruise staff, actually have living quarters in the plush passenger areas. Although some employees get single cabins, these are usually reserved for cruise staff with more seniority. Employees are usually separated by department, at least on the larger cruise ships. Cruise staff live on the same floor, kitchen and maintenance staff on another, and often the crew is further divided by nationality. Generally, the higher the quarters the better, since on some ships cabins below the water are somewhat noisy from the splash of water and hum of the engines.

Food for the crew gets mixed reviews from most employees. Some crews on smaller ships actually eat the same food as the passengers, but on the large ships, the crew almost always has their own mess hall. According to one recent cruise worker:

“We had several different messes on the ship: one for the Koreans, one for the American and European crew, and a couple of others. The food wasn’t very good and was always smothered in some sauce or another that I didn’t recognize, but it was certainly bearable. The bright spot was that we got lots of leftover dessert from the regular passenger meals, and once a week we were allowed to eat dinner in the restaurant free of charge, though we did have to tip and buy a drink. I guess it couldn’t have been too bad, because I still managed to gain some weight.”

Another cruise worker explains the entertainment that was provided for employees:

“There were movies for the staff, crew bingo games, and live shows to see. After you’ve seen the same shows a few times, though, it’s not so much fun anymore.”

Some ships provide extra amenities for employees, such as televisions for each room and special recreation lounges near the crew quarters. One employee even reported that her ship provided twelve new movies per week, all available on closed-circuit TV in the employee cabins.

Since cruise-ship employees have to live in small quarters  while working, they have become experts in making the most of cramped areas.

Others, too, have had to adjust to living in small spaces, from tiny-house owners to people simply wishing to avoid high rents.

For tips on how to live tiny, Insider spoke with Brian David Bruns, the author of "Cruise Confidential" who spent four years at sea with Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Holland America, Radisson, and Wind Star cruise lines, and Heidi Menier, a former American Cruise Lines housekeeper who worked with the company on a six-month contract.

Here's their advice for making the most out of a tiny living space.

Be aware of clutter

There's not a lot of room for error when living in a small space — something cruise workers know all too well.

"My first cabin was so small, I did not have the floor space in which to do a push-up," said Bruns.

Menier said she had to share a living space with nine other women, forcing her to greatly reduce the number of personal items she was able to keep around.

Related stories

"Only keep things you absolutely need, otherwise it can get cluttered," she said.

Take your time with decorating

It can be tempting to want to buy everything at once to feel like your space is complete, but don't rush into it without taking stock of how much space you really have — Menier recommends prioritizing sentimental items over pieces that you may grow out of over time.

Collecting items over time also helps you curate a space that feels more like "you" and not just whatever decor are trendy in the moment.

If you'll be living with roommates, take inventory of your habits

No one wants to believe they're the subject of someone's roommate horror story. Realistically, there are going to be times your habits clash with someone else's, and living together in a small space increases that likelihood.

Menier said managers on cruise ships do their best to mitigate any conflict and set up a schedule for time in the room, but this may not be realistic for people living in a small apartment or home. Setting expectations and ground rules in the beginning can limit the need for uncomfortable conversations in the future.

You might also have to adjust your expectations if you've never had to cohabitate before.

"I grew up with a small family in a large house, so it was quite a shock to me to share space at all," Bruns said. "I resented the proximity of my roommate."

"I had to accept the situation because I had no way to affect it, regardless of how I felt about it ... It's important and true: Attitude is everything," he added.

Be realistic about what you need to buy, but also think about items that may make sharing a small space easier

It can be tempting to shop for the version of you that you hope to be. This may include buying workout gear and health equipment that you won't really use, but with limited space, you need to be decisive in what you bring.

"I was sharing a space with a guy even bigger than me. When one of us was getting dressed, the other literally had to lay in his bunk," said Bruns.

However, it can be helpful to choose items that will make the situation easier.

"I always had headphones on ... It's about immersing yourself mentally into a place you want to be, rather than where you actually are," said Bruns.

Crew Members Talk Living Conditions on Cruise Ships

  • June 6, 2021

cruise crew living quarters

The cabin options for cruise ship guests are usually if not endless, then at least plentiful. For a pricey fee, guests can upgrade all the way to penthouses and ship-within-a-ship concepts onboard most major cruise lines.

But what about crew accommodations?

Cruise Industry News spoke with several crew members working on different ships to find out. They agreed to provide comments on the grounds of anonymity.

Cabin Types

A crew member who worked for all the major cruise lines – Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean International – said that the higher the position of the crew member, the higher will their deck usually be.

“Management onboard and most ‘second’ management get their own cabins. On Norwegian and Princess, you have the best management cabins that are like guest staterooms, with many perks. Royal Caribbean and Carnival management cabins are not as luxurious as most and vary between the size of the ship and position,” they said.

“Crew and staff cabins are anywhere between two and four team members. Four members are usually with housekeeping/bar/restaurant as these are the biggest departments. During the comeback to sailing, all cabins are limited to two crew members. Cabins with more than one crew member have bunk beds with curtains and are not made for privacy. You need to time your morning showers and so on properly – otherwise, you will be late for your shifts,” they added.

The crew member explained that crew cabins are made only for resting, not living. And closet space can barely hold the cruise uniform and some personal belongings.

A crew member on a Disney Cruise Line ship told Cruise Industry News that they had a cabin to themselves.

“All officers have their own cabins while the rest of the crew used to share a cabin (two per room). It seems like as of now, all crew members will have a single cabin. Cabins are, I would say, ok … There are three cabinets, bed, sofa, working desk and chair, tv, porthole, bathroom including shower cabin,” they said.

A crew member with Viking Ocean Cruises said that crew members on their ship shared cabins with a fellow department staffer.

“The cabins are really tiny, and you will have to think wisely before purchasing anything. They are all inside cabins,” they said.

Two crew members from AIDA ships said that until passenger sailings resume, they got to stay in a passenger room with a balcony on their own. However, normally, a cabin is shared between two crew members.

An employee with Silversea said that “in general,” they liked their cabin. It was “nice” and a “perfect” size for one. The bed was comfortable, the pillows were of good quality, the linen was great, they said. The TV was 39 inches, with “lots of movies on demand.”

They also said they were given $25-worth of free laundry, and their cabin was cleaned twice a week.

“That we can’t complain about. And we have a minibar. And good entertainment on TV. I’m happy with my accommodation; I had it much worse on other ships,” they said.

“Some positions – such as waiters, bartenders, housekeeping, cooks etc – always share a cabin between two people. But it’s enough space for two,” they added.

Improvements?

A crew member with one major cruise brand said that usually, crew cabins get virtually zero improvements.

“There are very often some minor improvements – like new carpet, new shower cabin … but in general, no improvement,” they said.

The crew member with Silversea said that crew cabins had gotten better over time.

“Cabins got better and a little bigger. The bed is now higher – that was a smart thing to do, so we have a lot of space for our luggage and storage,” they said. “The new air conditioner system is modern and can be adjusted by a little screen on the wall.”

The crew member who worked for multiple cruise lines said that, despite numerous drydocks and wet docks, crew cabins rarely undergo major changes.

“I’ve been working on ships for many years on many brands. Cabins have not changed at all, bar refurbishment. During wet and drydocks all cruise lines maintain the same cabin structures,” they said.

They warned that cruise ship crew members’ life often looks glamourous on the outside, but a lot remains hidden behind the façade.

“You will become very close to your peers as they are constantly in your face from the second you wake up …

What Does A Cruise Ship Captain’s Living Quarters Look Like?

When flight crew are staying at an overnight hotel (in case you were curious, some of them get points for those stays, some don’t ), it’s just a hotel, same as any other. The quality is based on what hotels the airline has contracted with. I daresay that the pilot of the plane doesn’t get any special benefits “just because he’s the captain.”

The situation is VERY different for cruise ship captains. Their responsibilities are just as important as that of a plane captain (read: everything starts and ends with them). But – and I guess it could be because cruise ship captains literally LIVE on the ship for months at a time – their accommodations are MUCH more swanky.

Captain Johnny Faevelen was born in Norway and has 45 years of international sailing experience. And get this…they’ve almost ALL been with Royal Caribbean International Cruise Line. According to his LinkedIn , he started with the cruise line in 1975, and save for when he was in school to obtain his Unlimited Masters License, he’s worked his way up the ladder at RC, until he became Captain in 1994 (he’s been Captain onboard the Nordic Prince, Sun Viking, Sovereign of the Seas, Monarch of the Seas, Splendour of the Seas, Voyager of the Seas, Explorer of the Seas, Adventure of the Seas, Navigator of the Seas, Mariner of the Seas from 2004- 2010, Then Allure of the Seas 2010-2016, now Harmony of the Seas 2016 – present).

Captain Faevelen has maintained a TikTok account since the first half of 2021. His videos have run the gamut from activities on the ship (window washing, typical maintenance such as renovation of the pool deck) to what happens in the Bridge and Engine control room, to his activities when he has time off and is back home in Norway (including, apparently, the immune therapy IVs he was getting for melanoma).

But most interesting, I thought, was the tour of his quarters on the ship.

I’ve only sailed on Royal Caribbean once, and it was nowhere near suite accommodations. But it’s been said the Captain’s quarters are roughly what you might find in the largest suites available.

When you enter Captain Faevelen’s quarters, you’re in a large entryway foyer, with a guest bathroom on the right.

The master bedroom is directly across the entryway. It includes a queen sized bed and a walk-in closet.  The ensuite master bathroom offers a standalone shower and a tub.

Go straight from the “front door,” and you’ll hit a dining room table that can hold 4-6. To the right of that (“behind” the guest bathroom) is the pantry/kitchenette, with refrigerator, dishwasher and cooking appliances.

Beyond the dining area is the Captain’s living room, which has a couch, love seat and easy chair, as well as a large screen (55″) TV.

To the left of the living room is the Captain’s Office, which has direct access to the Navigation Bridge (talk about having the best commute in the world!).

@captainjohnnyfaevelen #welcome to the #captain #cabin and #office #onboard @Royal Caribbean #harmonyoftheseas #oasis #class #modern #cruiseship #shipslife #comfortable #life #at #sea ♬ original sound – Captain Johnny

Captain Faevelen isn’t the only captain of a large cruise ship to share what their quarters look like.

Captain Kate McCue was the first American woman ever named captain of a “Mega” cruise ship, back in 2015. Currently the Captain of Celebrity Beyond, she also showed what her “crib” looked like, back in the summer of 2020:

@captainkatemccue CRIBS: Captain’s Quarters, Suite Life Edition & tour du jour. You asked for it… #fyp #foryou #captainscabin #celebrityedge #cruise #captain #room ♬ Alone – Petit Biscuit

I knew that “regular” crew on cruise ships are usually squashed together like sardines. Crew who are working in entertainment, and others who are a step or two up usually at least get a cabin to themselves, and don’t have to share (I have friends who have worked in various capacities for Disney and Virgin Voyages). But it looks like the Captains get the equivalent of an entire apartment to themselves. Very cool.

In the north-west and south-west wings in place "Throne Room" and "Opera House" were created light courtyards around which formed enfilades of living quarters. To this drive come housing of St George Hall , Great Church housing, south-east and north-east wing of the palace, the space is broken into a system of yards and hollows: "Small" and "Large ecclesiastical" neighborhood, "Church" and "garage" (from the garage located here) swales, "Kitchen court".

Elegance and magnificence of the building's silhouette give the sculptures and vases, mounted above the cornice around the perimeter of the building.

They were originally carved out of stone and replaced with metal in years of 1892-1902 (sculptors M. Popov, Jensen). "Opened" composition of the Winter Palace is kind of Russian processing of closed type of the palace building with a courtyard widespread in architecture of Western Europe.
