Fish the FL Keys 4 Hours

Recreational fishing is just that… When someone asks you what you’re fishing for, the answer is – a) snapper, b) jacks c) grouper d) to relax or e) all of the above. The goal is to fish and catch. We only hope that a) the fish are biting and b) you can bring them in the boat. If no signs of bite early in, we’ll change locations – head to a grass channel or out the reef. Ultimate goal: good time fishing!

Day on the Water 4 Hours

Eco • Paddle • Snorkel • Beach • Lunch: it’s up to you. The backcountry of the FL Keys is a very special place to explore. Located on the Gulf side, we’ll cruise the backcountry to the Content Keys, walk the flats, paddleboard, see the birdlife. Our specialty is families and kids. A fun day on the water!

Sunset Tour 2 Hours

A sunset in the FL Keys is a magical experience to behold. There are few places on the east coast where one can see the sun set into the water, and this is one of them. Motor or sail, ocean side or Gulf. We depart the marina 2 hours prior to sunset. Bring your own sunset drinks and snacks. We might even take a quick dip–whatever we want. You’re in the Keys!

Testimonials

Captain Brian is the hands down number 1 boat instructor in the Keys. I recently took my 14 year old daughter to a there hour hands on boating safety course with Captain Brian in Bahia Honda Key. He was absolutely fabulous and my daughter learned, in depth, how to navigate a boat in all manner of conditions including high winds, shifting tides, through narrow channel, docking the boat in various wind conditions, and chart reading. My daughter was captivated and it was very empowering for her to master these skills. Captain Brian has perfected a teaching skill which engages the kids so they really retain the information and have a great time learning. TOM & ALLY
The water was crystal clear, the sea life magnificent, the pelicans close, the Captain gracious, and the sunset backdrop breathtaking!  I cannot recommend this experience any higher!  Bon voyage! LISA FROM IOWA
I recommend the motor boat / paddleboard combo tour thoroughly. It was our first time on paddle boards and Captain Brian made it so easy. SARAH FROM TEXAS
Thanks so much for customizing our boat trip to serve both our needs! JANINA & CHRIS
The protected cove, the rays, the sunset – a perfect outing with Capt Brian. Highly recommended. DOUG & FRIENDS
Thanks to Captain Brian, we had an amazing time on the water. We loved every minute! JAY, LISA & CATHY
Thanks again for helping us today Capt Brian. It was fun, informative, confidence building, and a great first trip out to the reef. KIERAN & MR. C!
Jack and I had wonderful time with you on the water. We see how much you love what you do. You made our trip to the Keys that much more special. MAGGIE & JACK
Thanks to Captain Brian – I learned how throw a cast net in no time! JOHN CHANG

a large body of water

We went out for a morning boat tour with Heather and had what was possibly the best day of our vacation in Key West! 1/2 of our group paddled and the other 1/2 kayaked and then we enjoyed peacefully lounging on the crystal clear sandbar before heading back! We’d definitely do it again and recommend to anyone coming to visit!

It was a great experience. Loved the boat captain Lindsay. They bought us kayaks and paddle boards on the boat and even a floating Lilly pad. We enjoyed the sandbars so much we are thinking of doing it again before we leave.

Booked the 1/2 day pontoon boat cruise and had the time of our lives. We have been on many many similar tour experiences and this one easily stands tall above the rest. Heather was such a gracious captain and host, and so knowledgeable about the local ecosystem and wildlife. She picked the perfect sandbar away from the crowded glut of party boats and we had paradise all to ourselves. Well maintained paddleboards, kayaks, floating platforms and snorkeling equipment were laid out for us, and the ability to choose our own adventure activities for the day was invaluable to the enjoyment of it. The best tour of it's kind, thank you Lazy Dog!

Today we did the backcountry boat tour with Heather, our captain. We had the BEST day!! She took us on a lovely boat ride way out to some quiet mangroves, where we snorkeled and played for hours! It was so much fun! Even got to see some small sharks and a sting ray. We wanted a relaxing, easy going day and that’s exactly what Heather had for us. A great way to explore the islands!! Highly recommend!!! 🏝️😍

What should I bring?

Some people bring a hat or sunglasses. We have some dry bags for guest use, but you can bring your own. Bring a change of clothes. We have towels for you if you want to use ours.

What's a typical tip your guide?

Whatever you think sounds reasonable. There is no set amount. Some guests tip like $15 or $20 per person. Tipping is customary and much appreciated, although not mandatory. We can send you your guide's Venmo or Zelle handle upon request. Thank you for considering!

Can I get a discount when reserving through a third-party seller?

No. Unfortunately, we can only provide the direct booking discount and the meet-up discount for direct bookings.

What kind of experience do I need for the kayak trip?

You don't need much experience at all. Even if it's your first time, you can do it! If you are inexperienced, we will put you in a double kayak, so you have someone else to help paddle too. We'll give you some helpful tips, and we'll be near to you the whole way!

What kind of clothes should I wear?

A bathing suit is great for the snorkeling part of the trip. Same for the kayaking or paddle boarding part. Bring a change of clothes so you're comfortable for the trip back. If it's a chillier day, a sweatshirt is ideal for the boat trip back.

Should I prepare for possibly getting seasick?

Some people swear by seasickness medications or wrist pressure bands. For some guests, these methods are not needed. We will avoid going out if there are rough conditions.

Does this trip ever need to be cancelled?

We monitor a few different marine forecasts and atmospheric weather forecasts in the days leading up to the tour. If we feel the conditions are not conducive to a pleasurable and safe experience, we will notify our guests before the tour that it needs to be cancelled. We will try to provide alternate days the tour will go out when the weather is better. But if that is not possible, either for us or the guest, we will refund you in full right away. If part of a trip needs to be cancelled after starting the tour due to the marine forecast, or for any other reason, we will try to find an alternate activity or boating excursion to replace that part that was cancelled. If we choose an alternate activity, there will be no full or partial refund for the tour. This type of "while on the tour" cancellation or alteration rarely happens though.

What is the minimum age?

The minimum age for this trip is 7. Some of our other shared tours have a minimum age of 5. On some private tours, there is no minimum age.

The Florida Keys, an ecologically fascinating place, offers many natural wonders to explore. The Keys are a paradise for nature lovers, from the dense mangrove islands to the vibrant coral reefs. The unique blend of freshwater from the Everglades mixes with the ocean’s saltwater, creating an environment teeming with marine life.

As you journey through the Keys, you will encounter many wildlife, including bottle-nosed dolphins, sea turtles, and diverse bird species. Embarking on eco tours is the perfect way to experience the Florida Keys’ natural wonders while minimizing your environmental impact. From guided mangrove tours to marine life encounters and wildlife watching, you’ll discover a world of beauty and wonder. So let’s dive into these eco-friendly adventures and see what the Florida Keys offer.

Guided Mangrove Tours

Guided mangrove tours offer an immersive experience, allowing you to explore the watery mangrove forests and natural tidal creeks of the Florida Keys. As you paddle through the mangrove channels, you’ll be surrounded by a diverse ecosystem, home to various bird species and marine life. These tours provide hiking nature trails and birdwatching opportunities, ensuring that you connect with the environment more intimately.

Marathon Kayak, for example, offers guided mangrove eco-tours that take you through the channels and passageways of the Gulf of Mexico, allowing you to explore secluded islands and witness the beauty of the local wildlife. With a knowledgeable guide leading the way, you’ll learn about the unique ecosystem and its inhabitants while navigating the winding mangrove channels.

Marine Life Encounters

The Florida Keys’ marine life encounters are an unforgettable experience for anyone who appreciates the beauty of the underwater world. Snorkeling over the patch reefs allows you to observe the vibrant coral reef and its diverse marine life. In the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, you can explore the only living coral reef in the continental United States through glass-bottom boat tours or snorkeling and diving charters. Kayak and paddleboard rentals are also available for those who prefer to explore the 50 miles of natural mangrove channels surrounding the park.

For a more immersive experience, consider taking a Dolphin Watch and Snorkel tour in Key West . This small group expedition allows you to observe dolphins in their natural habitat while also enjoying snorkeling and kayaking experiences. The all-inclusive eco tour on a sail cat offers a similar adventure, combining sailing, snorkeling, and kayaking to ensure a memorable marine life encounter.

Wildlife Watching

The Florida Keys offer a wealth of wildlife-watching opportunities, allowing you to observe various species in their natural habitats. For instance, the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail encompasses 10 native habitat stops, providing ample birdwatching and wildlife discovery opportunities.

Backcountry explorations in the Lower Keys offer the chance to witness shallow-water avian species, such as egrets, herons, and kingfishers. The Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden is the only frost-free botanical garden in the continental United States. It provides a home to many endangered and threatened flora and fauna species.

Visiting such locations not only provides an unforgettable experience but also supports the conservation of these precious ecosystems.

Sustainable Transportation Options

As you traverse the Florida Keys, consider choosing sustainable transportation options to minimize your environmental impact. Rental car companies like Hertz, Enterprise, and Avis offer hybrid and electric cars, allowing you to reduce your carbon footprint while exploring the Keys.

Another eco-friendly transportation alternative is FlixBus, which provides car-free bus service in the Florida Keys. Operating daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., FlixBus offers an affordable and sustainable way to travel through the islands. For shorter distances, consider renting a bike from companies such as Bike Key West and Key West Bicycle Rentals, allowing you to enjoy the scenic beauty of the Keys while staying environmentally conscious.

Green Accommodations in Key Largo

When planning your eco-friendly vacation in the Florida Keys, consider staying at green accommodations, prioritizing sustainability through water conservation, energy saving, and solid waste reduction. You can find a range of green accommodations in Key Largo, including Baker’s Cay Resort Key Largo, Curio Collection by Hilton, Island Bay Resort, and Kona Kai Resort.

By choosing green accommodations, you enjoy a comfortable stay and contribute to preserving the environment and supporting sustainable practices. Kayaking, snorkeling, and fishing are popular activities that allow you to explore the local environment and observe the abundant marine life. For a unique adventure, consider visiting Robbie’s in Islamorada, where you can hand-feed massive tarpon, shop in the open-air market, and partake in various water activities, such as diving, snorkeling, and specialty fishing charters. Long Key State Recreation Area and Windley Key Quarry Fossil Reef State Geologic Area also provide eco-friendly activities, including nature trails and exploring acres of fossilized coral.

Marathon’s Marine Sanctuaries

Marathon, located in the heart of the Florida Keys, is home to a wealth of marine sanctuaries that provide refuge to a diverse range of marine life. The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and the Key West National Wildlife Refuge protect coral reefs, sea turtles, and manatees, ensuring the preservation of these precious ecosystems. In addition to their environmental significance, Marathon’s marine sanctuaries also offer the chance to support local conservation efforts. For instance, the Dolphin Research Center and the Turtle Hospital are dedicated to conserving and rehabilitating two of Florida’s iconic marine species. Visiting these facilities not only provides a unique educational experience, but also directly supports their vital conservation work.

Key West Wildlife Expeditions

Key West, the southernmost point of the continental United States, offers a range of wildlife expeditions that allow you to explore the surrounding waters and observe the local wildlife. Key West Ecosystem. Tours provide small group wildlife expeditions, such as the Dolphin Watch and Snorkel tour, which includes snorkeling and kayaking experiences. Sustainable seafood options in the Keys include spiny lobster, pink shrimp, mahi-mahi, grouper, snapper, and stone crabs, a sustainable delicacy. By selecting sustainable seafood options, you support environmentally responsible fishing and farming practices, protect marine ecosystems, and preserve fish stocks for future generations.

The Fish House, M.E.A.T. Eatery and Taproom, Ciao Hound, Lorelei Restaurant & Cabana Bar, and Pierre’s are some of the premier restaurants in the Florida Keys that offer sustainable seafood, ensuring that your dining experience aligns with your eco-friendly values.

florida keys eco tour by boat

A 125-mile-long archipelago at the southernmost tip of the US, the Florida Keys are made up of around 1,700 laid-back islands. Stretching like a string of pearls across the teal waters of the Gulf of Mexico, the Keys are best known for sandy beaches and bohemian culture. Beyond sun-worshipping and sipping rum runners (the area’s signature cocktail), there are also boundless activities for outdoor enthusiasts keen to explore this palm-fringed paradise. From snorkelling and sailing to biking and kayaking, the Keys offer a multitude of fun ways to inject adventure into a classic Florida holiday.

Snorkelling & diving in coral gardens

With a wealth of coral-lined islands rich in marine life, the Keys are an ideal spot to sink into balmy waters and discover delicate reef systems. Just off Key Largo lies the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park — the first underwater park in the US. Glide through clear waters and explore vivid coral gardens teeming with aquatic life. With 48,000 acres of protected ocean to explore, you’ll find a rich ecosystem of tropical fish, sea turtles, lobsters and fierce-looking barracudas that call this diverse region home. Book a PADI scuba dive tour to get up close and personal with Christ of the Abyss — a towering bronze sculpture of Jesus below the surface of the water.

Kayaking through the mangroves

Grab a paddle and venture into the ethereal mangroves of Key West — a dense labyrinth of jungly tunnels and crystalline creeks. Guided kayak tours take you deep into this watery haven, where you’ll paddle through narrow passages shaded by the jade-green mangrove canopy. Wait until the sun sinks below the horizon and take a guided night kayak tour for the chance to see nocturnal marine life such as manatees emerging in the fading light. Family-owned tour operator Night Kayak Key West offers an evening excursion through the mangroves, where you’ll paddle a glass-bottomed kayak with LED lights illuminating the world below.

Where to eat: In addition to the freshest of seafood, Big Pine Rooster serves up ribs and a special-recipe meatloaf. Or sip like the locals at No Name Pub, located on Big Pine Key.

Where to stay: Consider the waterfront Sugarloaf Lodge , stay in an Airstream at Big Pine Key Resort  or pop a tent on one of the reserved campsites at Bahia Honda State Park.

Scuba diving, sport fishing and six-toed cats: exploring the Florida Keys

Time stands still on this archipelago

Palms on a sand beach in the Florida Keys

For a true tropical getaway, head to the Florida Keys. These islands draw scuba divers, recreational fishers and beachgoers looking to take it easy. You will find a little adventure here, too — but nothing that can't be done without a Mai Tai in hand! Here's how to find bliss in the laid-back Keys.

But first, what are the Florida Keys?

The Overseas Highway is 113 miles long

The Florida Keys are an island chain stretching across 125 miles at the southern tip of the state. The Overseas Highway and its 42 bridges connect the islands, bringing travelers to Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, Big Pine Key and the Lower Keys and Key West. The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, home to more than 6,000 wildlife species like whales, dolphins and manatees — plus the world's third-largest barrier reef — protects the water surrounding the islands.

Key Largo: dive right in

Divers could spend weeks in Key Largo and still not see all the underwater hot spots

What to do: Key Largo is where the divers go. Crystal clear water and spots like the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park — the first undersea preserve in the United States — beckon scuba divers and snorkelers seeking underwater beauty. The park covers 70 nautical square miles and you can even dive down to see Christ of the Abyss , a nine-foot-tall bronze statue 10 feet below the water. East of the park is Molasses Reef, a popular diving spot teeming with marine life. If diving is not your thing, enjoy the sparkling water with less of a commitment; book a glass-bottom boat tour or go canoeing and kayaking.

Where to eat: Locals love Key Largo Conch House , where diners devour key lime macadamia pancakes for breakfast and crab-stuffed mahi-mahi for dinner. If you can't tell by the name, conch is well represented on this menu, from the conch chowder to the lobster and conch ceviche. Travel + Leisure also said the restaurant should be "your introduction to the conch fritter, a Florida Keys specialty."

Where to sleep: Hang your hat at the all-inclusive, adults-only Bungalows Key Largo . All meals, poolside and beachside refreshments, yoga classes, paddle board and kayak rentals, and entertainment are part of the deal — you just have to show up at the right place at the right time. The spacious bungalows are lined up along the property's 1,000 feet of gorgeous shoreline.

Islamorada: a sport fisher's paradise

Boats leave at sunrise for all-day fishing expeditions off Islamorada

What to do: Islamorada earned its nickname as the Sport-Fishing Capital of the World due to its geography — the village is situated between Florida Bay and the Atlantic Ocean with access to the Gulf Stream. Visitors can charter boats and hire guides to take them out on the water in search of delicious kingfish, mahi-mahi and sailfish.

Where to eat: Grab dinner and see a show at Lorelei Restaurant and Cabana Bar . Order the tuna nachos, key lime peppercorn snapper and "frozen" key lime pie before settling in for a night of live music or magic. If you went fishing earlier in the day, you can even bring your own catch into the restaurant and have the chef prepare it! This is true sea-to-table dining.

Where to sleep: Coastal chic is the aesthetic at the luxurious Cheeca Lodge & Spa . The rooms are decorated in soothing shades of blue and boast views of the Atlantic Ocean and the 9-hole Islamorada Golf Course. Guests are spoiled for activity choice, with the option of tennis clinics, water aerobics, sunrise yoga, snorkeling tours and eco marine science classes.

Marathon: family-friendly fun in the middle of the Keys

The nonprofit Turtle Hospital gives injured sea turtles a second chance

What to do: The halfway point of the Keys, Marathon attracts families eager to participate in all-ages activities. This community is home to Sombrero Beach, where turtles nest from March through October. The marine creatures are beloved in Marathon, and the nonprofit Turtle Hospital welcomes visitors; here, injured endangered sea turtles are rehabilitated, with the goal of getting them back out to sea on their own. You can take guided tours of the hospital and rehab area, and even feed the reptilian residents.

Where to eat: There's fresh seafood, and then there's seafood that has been pulled out of the water and brought straight to the restaurant. At Keys Fisheries , the menu abounds with local delights like Key West shrimp, conch chowder and jumbo stone crab claws. Try the lobster Reuben for a particularly decadent option — but whatever you choose for your main course, be sure to save room for key lime pie, which is clearly a Florida Keys' specialty.

Where to sleep: The aptly-named Tranquility Bay Beachfront Resort was designed with relaxation in mind. Set on a private white sand beach, amenities include three swimming pools, a putting green, volleyball courts and in-room spa services. The roomy two- and three-bedroom villas come with big front porches, while the comfortable garden guest rooms are tucked back in the palms. At sunset, head over to TJ's Tiki Bar for killer sunset views and nightly jazz performances.

Big Pine Key and the Lower Keys: nature at its finest

The diminutive Key deer is only found here

What to do: Stroll down any street in Big Pine Key and the other Lower Keys and you will likely encounter wildlife, whether it be a Lower Keys marsh rabbit hopping along or a tiny Key deer in the pinelands. The latter creatures, an endangered subspecies of the white-tailed deer found only in the Keys, also roam freely at the National Key Deer Refuge . You can spend a day here hiking trails, snapping photos, working on a plein air masterpiece or birdwatching. If you are in the mood for something a little toothier, head to the Blue Hole observation platform to catch a glimpse of the alligators living in the freshwater pond (the largest body of fresh water in the Keys). Just be sure not to dangle your feet!

Where to sleep and eat: Keep the deer theme going at the Deer Run on the Atlantic . A quaint spot with just four rooms, guests receive a daily organic plant-based breakfast and the use of kayaks and bicycles to get around the island. For lunch and dinner, stop by No Name Pub for one of their famous pizzas (try the Caribbean Chicken) and homemade smoked fish dip made with yellowfin tuna.

Key West: where things go south (in a good way)

More than 60 six-toed cats, many likely related to Ernest Hemingway's cat Snow White, live on his property

What to do: Key West is the southernmost point in the continental U.S. — you can even visit the buoy that proves it — and was once home to legendary American writers Ernest Hemingway and Tennessee Williams . For some literary inspiration, head to their museums; feline fans will especially appreciate the six-toed cats who still roam Hemingway's property, the same place he penned several of his most famous novels. Today, the island's most eminent residents can be found at the Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory . Visitors flock to this glass-domed habitat filled with butterflies, birds and two flamingos.

Where to eat: Being only 91 nautical miles from Havana means Key West hosts some top-notch Cuban restaurants. At the colorful El Meson de Pepe in Old Town, highlights include Pepe's Cuban nachos with homemade plantain chips and ropa vieja and the cayo hueso Cuban mix, "Key West's version of the traditional Cuban sandwich." Sit out on the patio to enjoy live salsa music while sipping a mojito and indulging in a slice of the torta del limon, El Meson de Pepe's homemade spin on key lime pie.

Where to sleep: Established in 1891, La Pensione is a sweet nine-room bed and breakfast with a pool and lovely verandahs wrapping around the historic Classical Revival mansion. While it's peaceful, you'll only be a hop, skip and a jump from the action here — just three blocks away is lively Duval Street, known for its restaurants, bars, shops and drag shows.
