Explore other cities of saudi arabia, the city of roses.

Taif is called the City of Roses for good reason. The famous fragrant flowers that grow in this city and the surrounding valleys are one of a kind. Visitors from all over the country visit Taif especially in the summer months as the temperature here is considerably more welcoming. Taif has also earned the name of ‘The Summer Capital of Saudi Arabia’ as many people prefer its milder temperature and head towards the city to escape the blistering heat of the desert. Tourists also love Taif. Even traveling on the winding mountain road that leads to Taif is an adventure in itself.

In terms of population, Taif is the 6th most populous city of Saudi Arabia. It is located at an elevation of 1879 meters above sea level. The city has abundant natural beauty and is also known for the cultivation of grapes, figs, pomegranates, and honey. Taif has often been declared the best summer destination in Saudi Arabia.

Taif has seen various transfers of power throughout its history. From Thaqif tribe, to Ottoman Sultans, and Arab Kings, Taif has been passed on from one ruler to another. When the kingdom of Saudi Arabia came into being, Taif underwent a massive modernization campaign. Previously it had remained stuck in time and isolated from other regions.

With access to electricity in the 1940s, Taif quickly transformed into a modern city. King Faisal inaugurated the 87 km Makkah to Taif mountain highway in 1965. This greatly helped in integrating the city with other regions. So much so that it quickly rose to become one of the top summer destinations of the country.

The cities of Taif and Al Shaafa are situated at around 2000 meters above sea level. Due to their relatively cooler climate, they offer a great summer retreat for domestic as well as international tourists. Taif is surrounded by the Hejaz mountains which are part of the greater Sarawat mountains. It is a plateau region and also contains some smaller valleys in the region.

The highest peak of Taif is Jabal Daka. You can go for an exciting adventure by driving on the curvy roads that lead to this point. Once on top, you can soak in some grand views. There is also the option to indulge in offroad adventure.

Cultural Life

Taif city has primarily relied on agriculture for sustenance. Its main export in the earlier days was the fragrant roses that it is famous for. The city has a number of different natural landmarks as well as historical sites and museums.

Souq Okaz was not just a historically significant souk but also a complete historic theater. It was a place for different tribes and customs to come together and exchange ideas as well as do commercial activities. Keeping this in mind, the Souq Okaz cultural festival was organized under the Saudi Seasons initiative. Apart from this, Taif also hosts the Crown Prince Camel Festival and Rose Festivals.

Like most other cities of Saudi Arabia, football is a popular sport in Taif. King Fahd Sports City in north Taif hosts various football tournaments and events.

Popular Attractions

The famed city of Roses, Taif is perched between the rocky mountains of the Makkah province. The view of the city can be enjoyed from the Taif Cable Cars (Telefric Al Hada) .

The geographical wonder, Al Wahbah Crater is also situated near the city of Taif. This is a must-visit spot as you rarely get to experience such an exquisite natural wonder anywhere else on the planet.

Qantara Mosque , also known as Masjid Madhoon is a popular site for tourists. It was built around 162 years ago during the Ottoman period. It gets its distinct, ancient look due to its inspiration from Abbasid architecture.

The Shubra Palace is an interesting spot to visit. It used to be a royal residence for King Abdulaziz. Now this marble-floored building has been converted into a museum and provides you a great sneak peek into the history of the region.

For visitors looking for an escape to nature, the impressive Saiysad National Park is a great retreat. The park also contains a kids' playground along with picnic spots around a small dam. You may also get to see some seasonal streams taking their course through nature. There is also a small zoo in Taif that can keep kids entertained for hours.

Taif: a hidden Saudi haven for nature lovers

Taif a hidden Saudi haven for nature lovers

Earlier this year, I took my first ever trip to Saudi Arabia, with broadcaster Zezi Ifore and director Amirah Tajdin, who were shooting a film in AlUla for Condé Nast Traveller focussed on exploring the country's unexpected locations. For the second part of Tajdin’s series, she partnered with Hayat Osamah, a Jeddah-born fashion photographer who lives and works in Riyadh. This time the destination was Taif, a city in the western Makkah Province amid the Hijaz mountains – and a place that neither I, nor Osamah, had explored before

Set at almost 2,000 metres above sea level, Taif’s lush landscapes and crisp air defy the conventional expectations of Saud Arabiai (which often conjures images of towering skyscrapers and endless deserts). Although the destination has a cooler climate than a desertscape such as AlUla, its history is equally rich, with agricultural roots that can be traced back to the sixth century AD. During Ottoman rule, the city was strategically located, serving as a hub for pilgrims travelling to Makkah. The name Ta'if originates from the Arabic word for wanderer, which felt particularly relevant for Osamah. “As a kid, I used to only pass by Taif, going to Jeddah,” she said. “It was more of a passage – we’d never actually stop and look around. But now, I've seen it and experienced it myself. It's mind blowing”

Despite the fact that it is the sixth most populous city in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, one of the first things that struck me about Taif’s landscape was the absence of crowds. In the mountains, surrounded by organic rock formations and a backdrop of vibrant greenery, we were even occasionally greeted by wild monkeys. We also met Saleh Al Omari, who showed us around his rustic stables and introduced us to Malaz, one of his horses. Amid the incredible scenery, it was poignant to watch Osamah connect with the beauty of her country. “The landscape feels very raw and I like to see rawness – it's not pretentious,” she said as she snapped pictures of the plants and flowers.

Taif a hidden Saudi haven for nature lovers

Taif also has a poetic nickname: the City of Roses. Its expansive rose fields, which bloom from March to April, produce petals that are harvested for highly sought-after rosewater and oils, used in perfumes by brands such as Chanel and Hèrmes. The annual Taif Rose Festival, held in May, is a visual and olfactory delight, when parades, exhibitions and cultural performances are staged to celebrate the region’s botanical heritage. The essence of rose is even combined with honey, a local speciality, and is known for its pure, unprocessed quality and health benefits. At the Taif souq, in the subtly renovated historic centre, you can discover these treasures within  peaceful surroundings. Despite the market's size, it doesn't have the hectic crowds of a big city market. Here, Osamah was shown a type of honey called Samora in a local store, before we made our way around the rest of the souq, which is filled with crafts, silver and gold jewellery, handmade soaps and a variety of jewel-like fruit. Before the end of our visit to Taif, we stopped off at Amou Faisal, a restaurant owned by Faisal Hamed Al Salmi, where Osamah shared a traditional dish of saleeg (meat and rice) with him.

Taif a hidden Saudi haven for nature lovers

“Taking a pause in nature is very necessary,” said Osamah of her experience in Taif. “For my creative process, for my spirituality… It’s not just something beautiful to look at, it’s more than that. The more you look, the more you understand. I want the world to see it.” For me, I found Taif to be a place where history, nature, culture and tradition all seamlessly converge. Its charm lies in a feeling that you have strayed off the beaten path and are unearthing a hidden Saudi gem.

Taif the rose city

Taif is a city and governorate in the Makkah Region of Saudi Arabia. It is located at an elevation of 1,879 m (6,165 ft) in the slopes of the Hijaz Mountains, which themselves are part of the Sarat Mountains . The city has been called the unofficial summer capital of Saudi Arabia and has also been called the best summer destination in Saudi Arabia as it enjoys a moderate weather during summer, unlike most of the Arabian Peninsula. The city owes its popularity among tourists to its many mountain resorts and moderate climate, even during the harsh summers of Arabia1.

Taif is also very active in the manufacturing of traditional ‘Atar’, and is known locally as “City of the Roses” (Arabic: مَدِيْنَة ٱلْوُرُوْد, romanized: Madīnat al-Wurūd). Taif also hosts the historic Souq ‘Okaz. There are many things to do and see in Taif, including visiting its bustling markets and enjoying its beautiful views.

Here are few historical place to visit in Taif-Ziyarat in Taif

1. abdullah ibn abbas mosque in taif:.

Masjid Abdullah Ibn Abbas, in Taif, is build close to the grave of the great sahabi Abdullah Ibn Abbas (رضي الله عنه). He was the paternal cousin of the Prophet (ﷺ)

Abdullah ibn Abbas ra was a great mufassir and faqih. He was also the cousin of Rasul Allah (Sallalahu alaihe wa sallam). While growing up, he was by the Prophet’s (ﷺ) side doing different services like fetching water for ablution.

He would pray with the Prophet (ﷺ) and join his assemblies, journeys and expeditions. The Prophet (ﷺ) would draw him close, pat him on the shoulder and pray,  “O Lord, make him acquire a deep understanding of the religion of Islam, and instruct him in the meaning and interpretation of matters.”   Ibn Abbas (رضي الله عنه) narrated,  “The Messenger of Allah wiped my chest and said ‘O Lord, grant him wisdom.’”  Ibn Abbas (رضي الله عنه) devoted his life to the pursuit of learning and knowledge, following the Prophet (ﷺ) and memorising his teachings.

I sat in the mosque and read some of the hadith narrated by Abdullah ibn Abbas radiallahu anhu. Being a student of hadith this was a great honour to be in his mosque.

2. Addas Mosque in Taif

2.Addas Mosque – Addas ra was the first revert from Taif. When Rasul Allah sallahu alaihe wa sallam came with the message of Islam to taif, people refused and hurted him to the extent that his feet bled. It was the most difficult time in the life of Rasul Allah. While he was resting at a place Addas ,a slave was sent with grapes.

Addas ra was a Christian from Nineva (a place now in Iraq to where Prophet Younus (AS) was sent by Allah). He was a slave of Utbah bin Rabiah and served a rich family originating from Makkah. When prophet pbuh ate the grapes with “Bismillah” it sparked his attention and he asked: People here do not say that! Addas ra accepted Islam.

The mosque’s architectural style is similar to that of the Abbasid dynasty, giving the impression that it is older. The mosque has retained its traditional design, including its interior

Prophet Muhammad pbuh refused and said from them will come people who will respond to my call.

There is a place where shaqq e sadr took place-(not authenticated but the local say that and they have marked the place with prayer rug.

Located just a few kilometers to the south of Bani Saad and marked by a gentle curve in the road, the captivating presence of Al-Kalada Heritage Village greets the observer. Steeped in history, this venerable village is rumored to have been the residence of Al-Harith ibn Kaladah ra, a distinguished Arab physician and a Sahabi of Prophet Muhammad. As such, it stands as an esteemed destination for historical and Islamic ziyarat in the city of Taif.
